- 0:07The Upstart World Football League only played one full season in 1974 before folding halfway through their 1975 season.
- 0:15The league featured many NFL stars that jumped or extended their career by playing in the WFL.
- 0:21On November 21, 1974, the league's Western Division champion Southern California Sun hosted the second-place Hawaiian team during the opening quarterfinal round of the 1974 playoffs.
- 0:33This is the local Hawaiian radio broadcast featuring announcer Mel Proctor.
- 0:54Good evening everyone, Mel Proctor speaking to you from the Big A in Anaheim, California, Anaheim Stadium where tonight the Hawaiians meet the Southern California Sun in the first-round World Football League playoff game.
- 1:06The on-again, off-again playoffs are finally underway tonight and all of the teams involved have put their problems aside and are now concentrating on winning football games.
- 1:15In a game already underway in Orlando, the Florida Blazers are meeting the Philadelphia Bell in a nationally televised game.
- 1:21The winner will meet Memphis next Friday in Memphis.
- 1:24Here in Anaheim, the Hawaiians meet the Southern California Sun.
- 1:27The winner of this game will go on to meet Birmingham next Wednesday in either Birmingham or possibly in Hawaii if the Hawaiians win tonight.
- 1:35The Hawaiians and the Sun have already played twice during the regular season.
- 1:39Southern California won the first game 38-31 during the first week of the season here at Anaheim.
- 1:44And three weeks ago in Honolulu Stadium, the Hawaiians gained a measure of revenge beating the Sun 29-8.
- 1:51Tonight's game will feature Southern California, the Western Division winner with a 13-7 record against the strong finishing Hawaiians who were 9-11 overall, good for second place in the West, and who went 7-3 during the second half of the season.
- 2:05The Sun also went 7-3 but they lost three of their last four ball games.
- 2:09And tonight's game will feature two of the best passing attacks in the league. Southern California, the top ranked passing club led by rookie quarterback Tony Adams who before this game received a trophy as the Sun's most valuable player this season.
- 2:21And the Hawaiians are led by the veteran Randy Johnson who has completed over 57% of his passes since joining the team.
- 2:28And wide receiver Tim Delaney, the leading pass catcher in the league with 89 receptions for 1,232 yards and a touchdown.
- 2:36And we'll have more pregame activity in a moment.
- 2:40If you're looking for a way to put a great tire on your car for a very low price, listen to this.

- 3:21Use your Firestone revolving charge or any one of five nationally known charge cards.
- 3:26Firestone Smooth Riding Deluxe Champion. Discount prices now.
- 3:31Firestone, Firestone, Firestone.
- 3:39The junior football teams are taking part in a game down in the field right now, the Santa Ana All-Americans and the Tustin Bobcats as the band moves out to the edge of the field.
- 4:02The senior football team is leading the receiver and second leading rusher is out of this ball game with knee and ankle problems.
- 4:09The Sun's second leading pass catcher Dave Williams has his sprained ankle.
- 4:12Number one rusher Kermit Johnson has a pinched nerve in his neck.
- 4:15Their top defensive tackle Dave Roller has a bruised thigh.
- 4:18Sunny tied in Dave Parks with bad back and quarterback Tony Adams has a sore arm.
- 4:23And all but McAllister will play, so it sounds a little bit like a hospital report.
- 4:27Don't feel sorry for Tom Fiers, he's a veteran coach who's been in pro ball for many years and the Hawaiian coaches who know him feel that he's been known to exaggerate in injury situations in order to get his opponent to let down his guard.
- 4:39The Hawaiians too have a couple of injuries coming into this game but nothing too serious.
- 4:43Defensive tackle Ron East strained his knee last week and running back Vinny Clements has an ailing shoulder.
- 4:48They will both play.
- 4:49Also linebacker Dave Ulrich broke a small bone in the back of his thumb he was operated on. They put a pin in the thumb and he's playing with a fiberglass cap that will be encased in rubber tonight but all three of those players will play.
- 5:02Despite all of the problems, all of the distractions in the last week, the Hawaiians are ready for this ball game.
- 5:07They really feel that they can beat any team in the league and they're ready to go out and do just that tonight as they meet the Southern California Sun.
- 5:14And Hawaiian football warmup continues shortly.
- 5:17I'd like to report an immovable object.
- 5:20Oh an immovable object? Okay where did you see this immovable object?
- 5:23It was on the corner of Whitehall and Kapiolani, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, three garages, two large halls in the ground.
- 5:29Two large halls in the ground. How long has it been immovable?
- 5:31About six months, no movement.
- 5:33Six months.
- 5:34Could you use your secret weapon on it?
- 5:35Oh well our secret weapon is pretty busy these days but I'll tell you what we'll do. If you can sing our song.
- 5:41Real estate one is the one. That one?
- 5:44That's the one. Consider it done.
- 5:46If you'd like to report an immovable object, call real estate one today.
- 5:51Real estate one is the one. Real estate one is the one.
- 5:58Offices in Kailua, Kahala, Ewa, and Mililani Town.
- 6:02One more time.
- 6:04Real estate one is the one. Real estate one is the one.
- 6:11Offices in Kailua, Kahala, Ewa, and Mililani Town.
- 6:15Tonight's game should be an interesting matchup with the Sun first in passing against the Hawaiians defense.
- 6:25But in the second half of this season it's been the WFL's best with the addition of veterans like Defensive Axe Willie Williams and Chuck Dedweiler.
- 6:32And linebackers like Jim Snidecky, John Douglas, and Adrian Young.
- 6:35In the last ten games the Hawaiians have allowed an average of just 98.4 yards per game.
- 6:41That's the best figure in the league.
- 6:43And the key is as far as the Hawaiians are concerned as they move on to the field, they have to keep pressure on quarterback Tony Adams.
- 6:49He was sacked six times in the last meeting between these two teams and he completed just six out of 19 passes and he had two intercepted.
- 6:56So they will have to keep the pressure on Mr. Adams tonight.
- 6:59They also have to contain Kermit Johnson who has rushed for over 1,000 yards this year.
- 7:04Offensively Randy Johnson has to continue his hot passing last time against the Sun. He hit on 17 of 32 for over 200 yards and two touchdowns.
- 7:13So it will be the Hawaiians who will be taking their first step towards a possible World Football League title tonight.
- 7:18And stay tuned as the Hawaiians meet the Southern California Sun.

- 10:51He's a big one, 6'2", 240 pounds. And there you have the starting offensive lineup for the Southern California Sun.

- 11:52Taste what's happening, Cremot beer.
- 11:55Brother, you are tasting it till you're tasting Cremot beer.
- 12:03For the Hawaiians who will be opening up on defense tonight, they'll have Lem Burnham, a rookie from U.S. International,
- 12:09and Carl Lorch, a rookie from USC at the end. Lorch stands 6'4", weighs 240, Burnham about the same size as 6'5", 240.
- 12:16The defensive tackles are Ron East, who's playing with a gimpy knee tonight, an 8-year veteran from Montana State, 6'4", 250 pounds,
- 12:23and rookie Levi Stanley, 6'2", 250, a rookie from the University of Hawaii.
- 12:28The linebackers at the corners on the left side is Ray Hester, who's been playing very well lately,

- 12:36On the right side, a fine rookie, Gary Backus, 6'4", 225, from Oklahoma.
- 12:40And the middle linebacker is Jim Snydecky, a 6-year veteran from Indiana, 6'2", 220.
- 12:45At the corners, Otto Brown, 6'1", 190, a 6-year veteran from Prairie View,
- 12:50and we'll give you the rest of the lineup in just a moment as the Los Alamitos band plays our national anthem.
- 13:20The Los Alamitos band plays our national anthem.
- 13:50The rest of that starting defensive lineup for the Hawaiians has Phil Andre at strong safety,
- 14:09a rookie from Washington, 6'1", 195.
- 14:11The weak safety is Chuck Detweiler, 6'1", 195, in his 6th year here from Utah State.
- 14:16And at right corner back, Willie Williams, 6'1", 190, a 10-year veteran from Bradley.

- 15:23RA copies will kick off for the Hawaiians.
- 15:28They'll be defending the south goal.
- 15:29Southern California will be receiving and defending the north goal.
- 15:33Back deep for the sun, Alonzo Emory and Keith Denson.
- 15:36Denson on the near side, Emory on the far side.
- 15:38A couple of rookies.
- 15:40Denson from San Diego State and Emory from Arizona State.
- 15:44The World Football League playoffs are finally underway.
- 15:47We're about to get underway.
- 15:49After several delays, I know the players are very anxious to get going.
- 15:52And the Hawaiians figure they can take it all.
- 15:55Taking one step at a time, they have to beat Southern California tonight.
- 15:59Kapech is ready to go to work.
- 16:01Soccer-style kicker moves up to the football, gets his foot into it.
- 16:04A high short kick will be taken at the 15-yard line by Denson.
- 16:09Straight up field of the 20.
- 16:1025, 30. Up to the 40.
- 16:12Turns the corner and he's dragged down from behind at the sun 47-yard line.
- 16:16And John Mosley pulled him down.
- 16:18And Denson nearly falls away and went for the distance on that point.
- 16:25A 37-yard return by Keith Denson.
- 16:30And we may have a penalty as the discussion centers at the 47-yard line.
- 16:35Dave Ulrich comes over for the Hawaiians.
- 16:38And the specialty in the kicking team is coming back onto the field for the Hawaiians.
- 16:41They've got an offside penalty against Southern California.
- 16:44So that will nullify that fine 37-yard return by Denson.
- 16:48And Kapech will kick the ball once again, this time from the 35-yard line.
- 16:51The Hawaiians, 35.
- 16:54Five-yard offside penalty against the sun.
- 16:57So that gives a break for the Hawaiians.
- 16:59Southern California would have had the ball at their 47-yard line.
- 17:03Let's wait and see what Mr. Denson or Mr. Emery will do with it this time.
- 17:09Southern California very slow to set up.
- 17:11I think they're a little bit disgusted at that call.
- 17:15And it looks like some arguing taking place in the far side of the field.
- 17:19Tom Sears talking things over with one of the officials.
- 17:22The officials tonight, the referee is Jack Baker.
- 17:24The umpire is George Kennard.
- 17:26The headlinesman is Harry Utoff.
- 17:28The line judge, Phil Osborne.
- 17:30The back judge is Roy Soster.
- 17:31And the field judge is Jack Harper.
- 17:33Kapech is ready once again.
- 17:35Denson and Emery waiting for it at the 7-yard line.
- 17:39So an auspicious debut here in this World Football League playoff game
- 17:43as the opening kickoff is replayed.
- 17:45Kapech sends it high and deep this time.
- 17:47It will be taken at the 7-yard line by Denson.
- 17:49Up to the 10, the 15.
- 17:50Fronts laterally at the 20.
- 17:52Heads to the 25.
- 17:53Stops, puts on the break.
- 17:54He gets up to the 30.
- 17:55And he's dragged down at the 35-yard line.
- 17:58He's dead and bringing it back 27 yards.
- 18:04And John Douglas making the stop.
- 18:09It will be first and 10 for Southern California as they spot the ball at the sun 34.
- 18:15Tony Adams at quarterback.
- 18:16Greg Heard and Alonzo Emery in the backfield.
- 18:20So Kermit Johnson is injured and will not start.
- 18:22Ralph Nelson is in there along with Heard.
- 18:25Dave Williams put out to the left side.
- 18:28In motion comes Ike Harris.
- 18:30The backs in the eye formation.
- 18:31Adams pitches to Nelson, flipping the right side.
- 18:33Tries to turn the corner but he's chopped down at the 35-yard line.
- 18:36Good defensive play that time by Ray Hester and Phil Andre.
- 18:40As they cut off the outside, forced Nelson to the inside.
- 18:45He picked up about two yards and that's about it.
- 18:48Second down and eight for Southern California.
- 18:50That's their 37-yard line.
- 18:53Opening minute of play from Anaheim Stadium.
- 18:56These two teams have met twice during the regular season.
- 18:59Each team winning a game.
- 19:01They also took part in two preseason scrimmages.
- 19:04Second down and eight.
- 19:05Dave Williams twists to the left side.
- 19:07Harris inside of him.
- 19:08The backs are split.
- 19:09Heard and Nelson.
- 19:10Adams takes the snap to give to Nelson up the middle.
- 19:13And he punches forward up to the 40-yard line where he's brought down.
- 19:17Phil Andre on the stop.
- 19:19Along with Gary Backus to pick up a four-yard.
- 19:23It'll be third down and about three.
- 19:27Along three yards to go for this time.
- 19:29They have the ball at their 41-yard line.
- 19:31Southern California is the top passing team in the league.
- 19:35Quarterback Tony Adams, throwing for better than 3,000 yards this year.
- 19:38He's just a rookie.
- 19:39What a future he's got.
- 19:41This time Williams flanks to the right side, picked up by Otto Brown.
- 19:45And Ike Harris flips out to the left side.
- 19:48Facing Willie Williams.
- 19:49The backs in the eye.
- 19:50Adams gives the second hand through Nelson.
- 19:52He punches forward and appears to be stopped shy in the first down as they wrap him up.
- 19:57Levi Stanley on the stop.
- 20:00It's going to be very close to a first down, but he looks to be short from our vantage point.
- 20:04And he'll bring out the dickarod for a measurement.
- 20:09Southern California with a 13-7 record coming into this game.
- 20:13But they have lost three out of their last four.
- 20:17Now they're going to bring the dickarod and the football out to the center of the field for a closer look.
- 20:25Lem Burnham and Hester in there making sure, and they are short of the first down,
- 20:30by about half the length of a football.
- 20:32So it'll be fourth down and less than a yard for Southern California.
- 20:36They have the ball at their own 44-yard line.
- 20:42Southern California prior is Norm Haneland.
- 20:45And like many players, he's had back problems.
- 20:47The sun will go for the one yard, actually less than a yard.
- 20:50So a big decision here.
- 20:52And Clay Jeffries is in at running back.
- 20:54They go from the power line formation to give to Jeffries up the middle.
- 20:57He punches forward and it's going to be very, very close as he ran into a stone wall in the person of Levi Stanley.
- 21:03But they have the first down.
- 21:05So Clay Jeffries entered the game for one play and picked up the first down.
- 21:11They needed less than a yard.
- 21:14So it's first and 10 for the sun at their 45-yard line.
- 21:17No score with 0-25 remaining.
- 21:20Substitution on defense, Lem Burnham goes out.
- 21:23And Rich Watkins comes in at defensive left end.
- 21:27Watkins, a rookie from Weber State who's been injured for most of this year.
- 21:33Williams splits to the left side along with Ike Harris.
- 21:35Harris is the inside man.
- 21:37Nelson and Hurd the running backs as Harris goes in motion to the near side.
- 21:40Adams takes the snap to give to Nelson up the middle.
- 21:43He is clobbered as he crosses the 45-yard line.
- 21:46Nelson really hit hard by Ray Hester, a third-year veteran from Tulane.
- 21:50He picked up about a yard.
- 21:52Burnham comes back in and Adrian Young checks in on defense for the Hawaiians.
- 21:56Rich Watkins goes out along with Ray Hester.
- 22:00They like to use Adrian Young on passing situations, second and nine or third and eighth, the long yardage situation.
- 22:07They feel that Young is very strong in zone coverage, an old pro who's been around for a while.
- 22:14Second down, nine for the Sun as the backs shift out of the eye.
- 22:18Adams bobbles the snap, drops back, fires his spot, making the grab as Dave Harkes is right-handed.
- 22:24He's across the 40, down to 35, still on his feet.
- 22:27He's gang tackled and blocked with a Hawaiian 30-yard line.
- 22:3224-yard pick-up.
- 22:34He bobbles the snap, he was trying to find the handle as he was back-pedaling to set up.
- 22:40And then he flipped it over the middle to find in Dave Harkes, a nine-year veteran from Texas Tech.
- 22:45Brought down there by Chuck Detweiler and Willie Williams.
- 22:49So it's first and ten for the Sun at the Hawaiian 30-yard line.
- 22:54And Adams goes to the air for the first time and finds success.
- 23:01First and ten for the Sun.
- 23:02No score, 10-41 remaining in the opening quarter.
- 23:05Williams and Harris again split out to the left side.
- 23:07The backs in the eye.
- 23:08The up man is Greg Hurd, a fine blocker.
- 23:11Adams on the gift to Nelson, sweeping the right side, following Grady.
- 23:14Gets a block, gets across the 30, and gets up to the 33-yard line before he's ridden to the sideline by Chuck Detweiler.
- 23:21Jim Snidecki also in on the stop.
- 23:24Across that offensive line, Joe Carollo and Paul Seiler at the tackles.
- 23:28Mike Ryan and Kevin Grady the guards, and Ted Seepert is the center.
- 23:35It'll be second down and seven for the Sun, a pick-up of three yards.
- 23:39Nelson so far, five carries for 13 yards.
- 23:43Although he doesn't have the big reputation of a James McAllister or a Kermit Johnson,
- 23:47the Hawaiian coaches feel that Nelson is just as good as the other two.
- 23:50He's only 20 years of age, never played college football.
- 23:55Second down, seven.
- 23:57As Adams goes to work, stumbles as he drops back, being chased out of the pocket, gets away from Lortz, sets up, fires back across the grave,
- 24:04and Nelson cannot make a diving catch at the 18-yard line.
- 24:07Nelson was open, but Adams had to throw the pass kind of across court pass,
- 24:14and he didn't get enough mustard on it, and it fell short.
- 24:17So the pass goes in complete. It's now third down and seven.
- 24:21As Lortz chased Adams out of the pocket, Adams is a fine scrambler.
- 24:26That's the good wheel.
- 24:28Last time these two clubs met, he was sacked six times by the Hawaiians.
- 24:32Adams has really taken a beating lately.
- 24:34Last week against Florida, he was sacked five times.
- 24:39Third and seven for the Sun as they operate from their 27-yard line, no score with 938 remaining in the first quarter.
- 24:48Lindsey is in now at wide receiver. He's put out to the right side.
- 24:52And a flag on the play. I think Southern California took too much time.
- 24:55That's the call, the way of game.
- 24:58Derry Lindsey, a rookie from Cal State Fullerton, is in at wide receiver.
- 25:05Replacing Dave Williams.
- 25:09Five-yard penalty stepped up. That will make it third and 13.
- 25:16The ball at the 33-yard line of the Hawaiians. Southern California on the move.
- 25:21Lindsey goes wide to the right, picked up by Otto Brown.
- 25:24Harris, split left, picked up by Willie Williams.
- 25:28The back shift out of the eye. Adams takes the snap. He'll throw.
- 25:31Back he goes. Set, looks. Has going to have to run.
- 25:33Sprints up the middle, has some running room across the 30.
- 25:36Trying to get to the outside and he's brought down to 31-yard line.
- 25:40They're making up the 29-yard line. A pick-up of four yards. Adrian Young on the stop defensively.
- 25:47So it'll be fourth down.
- 25:49Fourth and nine.
- 25:52Fourth down and nine for Southern California.
- 25:56And Rod Garcia, a soccer-style kicker from Stanford, is in the ball game.
- 26:03Holding for him will be Tony Adams.
- 26:05And his field goal attempt will be from the 37-yard line, so it's a 47-yard field goal attempt.
- 26:12Garcia to try. Adams to hold.
- 26:14The snap, the spot, the kick is way short as it hits in the front of the end zone.
- 26:21The field goal attempt fails. The timeout on the field with the score, the Southern California sun, nothing, and the Hawaiians, nothing.
- 26:28Homeowners, how would you like to expand the facilities of your home perhaps out of the Nile?
- 26:32Another bedroom or a carport for that new car?
- 26:35There is an easy economical way. Get in touch with the folks from Low Budget Homes, Inc.
- 26:39Low Budget Homes is the Hawaiian comma Ina firm with 20 years of experience in additions, alterations in modular home construction.
- 26:46They'll do residential, industrial, and commercial building jobs, so give a call to Low Budget Homes, 2828 Paha Street, phone 833-3031.
- 26:54Come out to Fisher Hawaii next to Gibson, a poona poona Paha Street store.
- 27:00Getting ripped off on office furniture and supplies, waiting for mainland back orders, well my friend, Fisher Hawaii undersells their competitors by 20, 30, 40, sometimes 50 percent.
- 27:07And they have $750,000 worth of merchandise in stock right now.
- 27:11Hey, hey, that merchandise is moving and the prices are down. We got the only office product supermarket in town.
- 27:17Fisher Hawaii, 40, office supplies, right prices, right prices, right now.
- 27:24So the Hawaiians go to work first and 10 from their 31 yard line.
- 27:36And the
- 27:39California drive stalls out.
- 27:41Looking for the bomb on first down and loads it for Eisenberger.
- 27:45And he does not have it.
- 27:47John almost folded in down at the Southern California 31.
- 27:51There was Keaton back there battling with Eisenberger for the football.
- 27:55So the Hawaiians go for broke on first down and Johnson unloaded a bomb.
- 28:00It was thrown a little bit short of Eisenberger.
- 28:02He's going to come back and get it and look for a moment like he made the reception.
- 28:06But they bring the ball back to the Hawaiians 30, where it will be second and 10.
- 28:11940 remaining in a scoreless first quarter.
- 28:14Delaney and Richardson put out to the right side.
- 28:17Al Davis and Ben Clements running back. The tight end is John Kelsey.
- 28:20Johnson on the give to Davis up the middle finds a little daylight.
- 28:24And Al is on the 33 yard line where he's wrapped up.
- 28:28Went on to stop defensively. Former University of Hawaii player.
- 28:326'7", 264 pounds.
- 28:35A five-year veteran.
- 28:37Player to rescue.
- 28:46Third down five now for the Hawaiians.
- 28:48As they operate from the 33 yard line, Eisenberger to the left, Delaney to the right.
- 28:53Jim Cadeal over the ball at center.
- 28:56Long count by Johnson. He'll throw.
- 28:58Set up short, looks right, throws to the short man Davis.
- 29:01Up to the 40 and falls forward to the Hawaiians 45 yard line.
- 29:05Good job.
- 29:06Middle linebacker Ken Lee on the top.
- 29:11And that will give the Hawaiians a first down.
- 29:14Lee played very little the last time he slept back.
- 29:17He had a pitch nerve in his neck, but he's a fine linebacker.
- 29:20A four-year veteran from Washington.
- 29:22Former starter with the Buffalo Bills.
- 29:24First and 10 for the Hawaiians. That's their 45 yard line.
- 29:27Brady Richardson flips out to the right side.
- 29:30Picked up by Jack Connors.
- 29:32And Kim Delaney will remain in tight on the left side.
- 29:35Davis and Clements set behind Johnson.
- 29:38They give to Clements, over right tackle.
- 29:40A quick opener and he gets out near midfield.
- 29:43Clements nearly ran right past the football.
- 29:46Johnson almost missed the handoff.
- 29:48As Vinnie really got out of the starting block.
- 29:50Charles DeJardin away from San Jose State on the stop.
- 29:53And Eisenbarger enters the Hawaiian lineup.
- 29:55Bring in a play.
- 29:57It'll be second down and seventh.
- 29:59The ball at the 48 yard line.
- 30:02Delaney flips to the right. Eisenbarger to the left.
- 30:05Delaney the leading pass catcher in the league.
- 30:07Johnson back fiddling quickly. Fires for Delaney.
- 30:09And he has him on a sideline pattern.
- 30:11Kim steps out of bounds and he's done 42 after picking up a first down.
- 30:17The sure hands of Tim Delaney coming through once again.
- 30:20He finished with 89 receptions, the top total in the league.
- 30:24And Delaney was voted the top offensive player by his teammates.
- 30:29First and 10 for the Hawaiians as they are putting together a drive.
- 30:33It started back at their own 30.
- 30:35They have it at the sun 43 right now.
- 30:38Delaney and Richardson flip to the left side.
- 30:41Johnson on the give to Al Davis following John Wilco around the right side.
- 30:45And he's knocked down as he gets up to 42 yard line.
- 30:48Good play by defensive tackle Dave Roller.
- 30:51No gain on the play.
- 30:53Roller is a real favorite here in Anaheim.
- 30:56They have fan clubs for them just like they have for Levi Stanley, Levi's Kanaka Army, and Lortz's Torches, the Carl Lortz.
- 31:03East feast for Ron East.
- 31:07I don't know if they call them the holy rollers or not.
- 31:11Second down 10 for the Hawaiians.
- 31:13Eisenbarger back in. He flips out to the left side along with Delaney.
- 31:17Eisenbarger is the inside man.
- 31:20Johnson back pedaling.
- 31:22Lookie trying to set up the screen.
- 31:24Fires at the pass is reflected and nearly picked off by John Hoffman, a big defensive end.
- 31:30Johnson with a deep drop back trying to let that screen form on the left side.
- 31:35And they kind of dumped it.
- 31:37And it was tipped and almost picked off by Hoffman.
- 31:41If the pass goes incomplete it will be third or tenth for the Hawaiians with the sun 43.
- 31:48Vinnie Clements leaves the ball game.
- 31:52And Clayton Heath is in for it.
- 31:54The rookie from Wake Forest.
- 31:56The back to Smith behind Johnson who looks at a passing situation.
- 31:59Randall Throw sets up.
- 32:01Looking, fires, the pass is deflected at the line of scrimmage.
- 32:04As Big John Hoffman got his arms up and knocked it down.
- 32:08The defense has stand for the sun.
- 32:12And you can send a lot of that to John Hoffman, five year veteran from the University of Hawaii.
- 32:18He was the rule all-American back in 1967.
- 32:20And for those UH fans who remember Hoffman, he played on the same team with Larry Cole, now the Dallas Cowboys.
- 32:28It will be fourth and tenth now and Gary Backus, the punter, jumps in.
- 32:31He will be putting it away from his own 42 yard line.
- 32:34In single safety is Keith Denson at the 10 yard line, a two man about 10 yards in front of him.
- 32:41Backus with a high, booming kick as he goes for the right corner.
- 32:45Denson fields it at the 10, doubles, momentarily gets up to the 15 or he's chopped down.
- 32:50A flag on the play.
- 32:52I'm not sure they gave Denson the necessary...
- 32:5433 yards.
- 32:55Yards.
- 32:56Denson.
- 32:57A 33 yard pass by Backus.
- 33:00Let's see what the penalty will be.
- 33:02Levi Stanley.
- 33:03Looks like an illegal procedure call against the Hawaiians.
- 33:09Or perhaps a personal file as they step it off.
- 33:14There will be a 15 yarder against the Hawaiians, the Sun 27.
- 33:18Interference with the catch is the call.
- 33:22As they interfere to the third man Denson.
- 33:28Now a timeout on the field with the score, the Southern California Sun nothing and the Hawaiians nothing.
- 33:35It has its own.
- 33:37You know some people seem to have everything going for them.

- 34:30Security Diamond and Conrad Jewelers.
- 34:34First and ten for the Sun at their 27-yard line.
- 34:37As Adams goes to work, the give to the first man.
- 34:39He looks for a thick hole up to 35 to 40 and down to the 44-yard line.
- 34:44Greg Curve busted off right tackle.
- 34:47And Chuck Denweiler cut him down.
- 34:49And the 44-yard pick up 15 yards in the first down.
- 34:52Heard a 245-yard rookie from Oregon.
- 34:56Sherman Johnson did not start the ball game tonight.
- 34:59He's leading rusher.
- 35:00So they are without their leading pass catcher, James McAllister.
- 35:04And they're two leading rushers in Johnson and McAllister.
- 35:10Dave Williams slips out to the right side.
- 35:12Eye-carrots to the left.
- 35:14Nelson and Heard set in the eye behind Tony Adams.
- 35:17The rookie from Utah State, some movement in the backfield.
- 35:19The flags go flying.
- 35:20They give this to Nelson.
- 35:21He's spun around by Levi Stanley and dropped back at the 39-yard line.
- 35:25It's going to be illegal motion against the Sun.
- 35:28As heard, the up man in the eye was a little bit early in his movement.
- 35:32Started about a step or two too soon.
- 35:35So it will cost them five yards.
- 35:37They're talking it over now.
- 35:41Illegal motion against the Sun declined because the loss was back to about
- 35:46the 39-yard line.
- 35:50And a coach will always tell you to go full blast no matter what happens.
- 35:54By that time it looked like the Sun didn't.
- 35:56They slowed up a bit.
- 36:00And the ball is fired back at the 37-yard line.
- 36:02It will be second and 15.
- 36:06Backs again in the eye.
- 36:08Man wide to each side.
- 36:09Adams on the draw to give up the middle.
- 36:12And Greg Heard, he runs into a foul and he's brought down and about the line of scrimmage.
- 36:16Ron East on the tackle.
- 36:21Defensively, Lem Burnham and Carl Orsz at the end.
- 36:26Ron East and Levi Stanley, the tackles.
- 36:30Jim Snydecky, Ray Hester and Gary Backus, the linebackers.
- 36:34Otto Braun and Willie Williams at the corners and Phil Andre and Chuck Detweiler, the safety.
- 36:41Third down for the Sun.
- 36:43Third and long yardage as the linemen set.
- 36:46Adams will probably have to go to the air.
- 36:49Leading passer in the league.
- 36:51Jordan Rothback fires and intercepts and is picked off by the middle linebacker Snydecky.
- 36:55He's up to the 30.
- 36:57He's still fighting and he's brought down at about the 25-yard line.
- 37:02The intended receiver was Greg Heard coming out of the backfield.
- 37:06Snydecky, he's been picked off and brought about 21 yards.
- 37:11And Ford Snydecky, his fifth interception of the year.
- 37:15So a big play by the Hawaiian defense as they have the ball.
- 37:20First down and ten at the Sun 22-yard line.
- 37:23No score.
- 37:25With 411 remaining in the first quarter.
- 37:27Eisenbacher splits to the right side.
- 37:29Delaney remains inside on the left side.
- 37:31Davis and Clements, the running backs.
- 37:33Johnson will throw.
- 37:34Backs into the pocket, sets up, looks, fires, he's got a man open.
- 37:37And it's caught by the tight end Kelsey who gets down inside the five.
- 37:41To about the four-yard line.
- 37:43John Kelsey, the big rookie from Missouri, 640 pounds.
- 37:49Now let's pause now for station identification.
- 37:51This is the Coconut Wireless Sports Network.
- 37:54KGMB Sports.
- 37:56Joe Moore reminding you the University of Hawaii tackles Fresno State Saturday night at 7.05 on KGMB Honolulu.
- 38:03First and goal to go for the Hawaiians at the Sun 3-yard line.
- 38:08As Kelsey's catch gives them the ball.
- 38:12Johnson on the give, up the middle to Davis.
- 38:14He has the running wheel, he's into the end zone for a touchdown.
- 38:16Al Davis, dancing over a couple of fallen bodies.
- 38:20And it's seven to nothing as the Hawaiians go out in front.
- 38:24The key play, the reception by John Kelsey that gave them a first and goal to go situation inside the five.
- 38:32So it's seven to nothing as the Hawaiians get on the board with 329 remaining in the opening quarter.
- 38:39Rupi Norris-Wheath, a fine rollout quarterback, comes in.
- 38:46Kelsey played the option style of football at Ole Miss.
- 38:50Wheath up under center waiting for the snap.
- 38:54Long count by Norris, takes the snap and gives into the line to Al Davis but he's shot down.
- 39:02The action point fails.
- 39:04And a turnout on the field with the score.
- 39:06The Hawaiians 7 and the Southern Californians are nothing.
- 39:10Just wait till you try our primo, while you won't believe the taste.
- 39:15It's a taste that'll make Hawaii proud.
- 39:20In the old tradition of great beer making, we take our place.
- 39:25And it's time for us to really shout out loud.
- 39:30Primos coming on, Primos here.
- 39:35Brother, you aren't tasting it till you're tasting primo beer.
- 39:40Got a brand new brew house, a lot of changes made.
- 39:45And a flavor that'll put us right on top.
- 39:49With pure Hawaiian water, we'll make it taste just right.
- 39:54We're on our way and we aren't gonna stop.
- 40:00Taste what's happening, primo beer.
- 40:05Brother, you aren't tasting it till you're tasting primo beer.
- 40:10R.A. Coppies sets the kickoff.
- 40:12Keith Denson and Alonzo Emery back deep.
- 40:15It's the Hawaiians lead 7 and nothing.
- 40:17Coppies kickoff a high short kick, taken by Denson up to the 20.
- 40:21The 25, the 30, gets to the sideline and he runs out of bounds at the 37 yard line.
- 40:26And some of the fans aren't too happy with that.
- 40:30A 20 high turn by Denson with a flag on the play.
- 40:34He simply headed out of bounds.
- 40:36He got to the sideline, looked like he had about 10 or 15 additional yards to run.
- 40:41But when he saw a tackler coming for him, he headed straight out of bounds.
- 40:46And he's got a ball at the 37 yard line.
- 40:49We've got a penalty against Southern California.
- 40:54As they talk things over, Dave Ulrich, the special team captain down there for the Hawaiians.
- 40:59Ulrich, one of many Hawaiian players who played in previous playoff games in the NFL.
- 41:07Along with Jim Snydecky and John Eisenbarger, Ulrich played with the 49ers.
- 41:11They were in the playoff three years when those players were with that club.
- 41:15Penalty is against the Sun.
- 41:19Now wait a minute, they're going to kick the football over again.
- 41:25And they'll spot the ball at the 40 yard line.
- 41:28So it's a holding call, a 10 yard penalty against the Sun.
- 41:31So Coppies will be kicking off at the 40.
- 41:35Let's see if they can drive one in the end zone from here.
- 41:39That's where it would have been kicking off last year under the old pro football rules.
- 41:44The kickoff from the 30 yard line.
- 41:49Denson and Emery stand back inside the 10.
- 41:52Seven to nothing, the Hawaiians on top with 320 remaining in the first quarter.
- 41:56These two teams have met twice this year.
- 41:59Southern California winning the first game, 38 to 31.
- 42:02A real shootout here at Anaheim Stadium.
- 42:04And the Hawaiians taking the second game two weeks ago in Honolulu Stadium.
- 42:09Coppies ready to go once again.
- 42:11They're going to put into it a high end over end kick that sends Denson back to the floor.
- 42:15He's up to the five, freedom field to the 10, 15, 20, 25, and's locked out at the 27 yard line.
- 42:21A good hard tackle by rookie Pete Soberson from Lake University, 23 yard return.
- 42:28So the Sun will go to work from their 27 yard line.
- 42:31Brailing seven to nothing.
- 42:33Getting back to the playoff veterans for the Hawaiians.
- 42:36Jim Cadeel, sack plate on a world championship team with the Chicago Bears in 1963.
- 42:42Guard John Wilbers was in the playoff seven years.
- 42:46And he played in two Super Bowls as did Corny Johnson, an offensive guard.
- 42:50First and 10 for the Sun.
- 42:52They give up the middle to the first man through Greg Hurd.
- 42:55And he punches his way across the 30 to about the 33 yard line.
- 42:59He's met by middle linebacker Jim Snydecky, a gain of six yards on the play.
- 43:03So he'll be second down at four.
- 43:06Corny Johnson was in the playoff for three years with a ball over his full.
- 43:09He was in the Super Bowl.
- 43:13The Hawaiians have seven players who've seen playoff action in the National Football League.
- 43:19Southern California has just two.
- 43:22Carl Oates and Joe Corollo.
- 43:24Second down, four for the Sun at their 33 yard line.
- 43:27It's a back shift out of the eye.
- 43:29Nelson and Hurd, Adam to throw.
- 43:31He sets up short, looks right, he's got a man open.
- 43:34And he finds Dave Williams who makes the grab on a sideline pattern at the 38.
- 43:38He has the first down.
- 43:41Williams, a veteran of NFL play in his eighth year,
- 43:44was a former number one draft choice for St. Louis Cardinals back in 1967.
- 43:49He was then traded to the San Diego Trafford and onto the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 43:53First and 10 for the Sun at their 38 yard line.
- 43:57Burnham, East, Stanley and Lawrence across the front line on defense.
- 44:00East beats, they have become known.
- 44:05Williams twists to the left side along with Icarus.
- 44:08Nelson and Hurd are split behind Adam.
- 44:11Adam to play big.
- 44:13Back to throw and trouble and Lawrence backs him back at the 27 yard line.
- 44:16Adams tried to scamper out of trouble.
- 44:19Lawrence was the first to get to it.
- 44:21East and Burnham were there as well.
- 44:25Good play by Carl Lawrence, the rookie from the SC.
- 44:29He has really made great strides this year after making the team following a tryout camp.
- 44:36He is going to have a fine future in professional football.
- 44:41A loss on the play of about 10 yards and he's second down at 20.
- 44:47The ball at the Sun, 28.
- 44:49Seven to nothing, the Hawaiians on top with 213 remaining in the first quarter.
- 44:54Aris and Williams split to the left side.
- 44:56Aris comes in motion back to the near side as Adams takes the snap to give up the middle to Hurd.
- 45:00A big hole up the middle.
- 45:02He gets to the 32 yard line where he runs into Jim Snydecky.
- 45:07So Hurd gets about five yards but they needed 20.
- 45:10So it will be third and 15.
- 45:13And Adams will undoubtedly have to go to the air once again.
- 45:18He's thrown for almost 4,000 yards this year.
- 45:22Adams tonight has hit on 2 and 3 for 29 yards.
- 45:27Set all kinds of passing records at Utah State.
- 45:31Third and 15 for the Sun as they operate from their 33 yard line.
- 45:35Aris splits to the left side, Dave Williams to the right.
- 45:39And the back to the wide split in the backfield.
- 45:41Adams backs into the pocket, rolls to his right.
- 45:43Look, fires, Dave Williams wide open at the 41.
- 45:47Gets up to the 45 and he's brought down to the center of the field.
- 45:50Very, very close to a first down.
- 45:54They needed 15 yards for a first down.
- 45:57And I think Williams is going to be a little bit short.
- 46:01Adrian Young and Levi Stanley on the side.
- 46:05They spot the football at the Sun 45 so they lack a first down by 3 yards.
- 46:12Mosley drops back for the Hawaiians.
- 46:14Willie Williams about 10 yards in front of him.
- 46:17John Mosley standing at the 17.
- 46:20Norm Heidler ranked 10th in the WFL running statistics.
- 46:24He'll do the booting from his own 30.
- 46:26He was in traction this morning with a bad back.
- 46:30So he, like a number of Sun players, have had problems.
- 46:32He takes the snap and hangs it up.
- 46:34A wobbly spiral, Mosley fields it at the 25.
- 46:37Up to the 30. The 35.
- 46:39Almost breaks the tackle and he's dragged down to the 39 yard line.
- 46:43John Mosley, the body line from Missouri, bringing it back.
- 46:47A 30 yard punt by Heidler and a 13 yard return by Mosley.
- 46:53The Hawaiians go to work first and 10 from their own 38 yard line.
- 46:58They lead at 7-0 as we near the end of the first quarter.
- 47:0122 seconds left.
- 47:03Delaney and Eisenbarger split out to the right side.
- 47:07Back to split behind Randy Johnson.
- 47:10Clements and Al Davis.
- 47:11Johnson with a play thing. Back to throw.
- 47:13Looks right. Fires it wide open at Tim Delaney.
- 47:16He dances out of bounds.
- 47:17Delaney making the catch in front of Jim Bright looking for the UCLA.
- 47:29The last time these clubs met, Delaney had nine receptions against Southern California.
- 47:35He's off to a good start tonight.
- 47:37The ball right at midfield, first and 10 for the Hawaiians.
- 47:42This may be the final play of the quarter.
- 47:4316 seconds left.
- 47:45Good deal over the ball.
- 47:46Johnson takes the snap to give the second man through.
- 47:48Al Davis pops over left tackle and squirts up to the 40 yard line near a first down.
- 47:54Good run by Davis and good blocking up front by Al Oliver and Jeff Seavey.
- 48:00Three seconds left and that may be it.
- 48:03They're going to bring out the Dickerod for a measurement as the clock stops with just two seconds remaining.
- 48:11And let's see, I believe they are about half a yard or perhaps less than that.
- 48:17They have the first down.
- 48:18No, they have the first down.
- 48:20First and 10 for the Hawaiians.
- 48:22At the sun, 40.
- 48:23As the clock rolls, that'll be it for this quarter.
- 48:26There's the gun.
- 48:27The first quarter with the score, the Hawaiians 7 and the Southern Californians 7 nothing.

- 49:30Can't we just go for a drink?
- 49:32Yeah!
- 49:34First and 10 for the Hawaiians at the Sun 40-yard line as we start the second quarter of play with the Hawaiians leading 7-0.
- 49:55Eisenbacher's puts out to the right side.
- 49:57As Randy Johnson digs in, the give is to Ernie O'Leary who's in the ball game now.
- 50:01He's left up for O.J. in a good defensive play by Neal Speer and a Dave Roller.
- 50:07O'Leary's playing with a bad ankle.
- 50:09Earlier I talked with him about the condition of that ankle.
- 50:12My ankle is pretty well healed, but I have a hand problem with my cousin.
- 50:18It kind of bothers me when I go to my left.
- 50:22Going to my right is fine, but after the game started, you start getting emotionally involved,
- 50:28and the people start cheering you and you want to play more and more.
- 50:32It just seems that the feeling just goes away.
- 50:36Johnson fires over the middle and complete to John Kelsey, and he's brought down at the Sun's 28-yard line.
- 50:41After picking up a first down, Derwood Keaton on the stop.
- 50:46And you heard from Ernie O'Leary, he left the ball game following that play.
- 50:51So perhaps that leg is bothering him just a bit.
- 50:54Kelsey running a slap out over the middle makes the catch.
- 50:57And it's first and 10 for the Hawaiians at the Sun's 28-yard line.
- 51:01Hawaiians on top, 7-0, as we're two minutes into the second quarter.
- 51:06Johnson steps up under center. Clements moves over a couple of steps behind him.
- 51:10Randi with a short drop back, looking, steps, unloads it long for Delaney,
- 51:14and Tim can't get to it down to the 9-yard line.
- 51:17Delaney was open, running a little out-pattern, but the ball was long for him, thrown to the outside.
- 51:23Rudy Redmond defending on the play.
- 51:28There will be second down and 10 for the Hawaiians at the Sun's 28.
- 51:32The winner of this game will play next Wednesday against the Birmingham Americans.
- 51:37And in the other playoff game tonight, with ten minutes left in the contest,
- 51:40the Florida Blazers lead Philadelphia 15-3.
- 51:43The winner of that game will meet Memphis next Friday in Memphis.
- 51:48Second and 10, Johnson to throw, back-pedaling, looking,
- 51:51long for Eisenberg, he stretches out, can't make the catch down at the 2.
- 51:55And again, the Hawaiians had a man open.
- 51:58And Johnson slams his fist into his palm and disgust, as twice he has overshot the mark.
- 52:05Randi now 4 out of 9 in the passing department.
- 52:11Make that 5 out of 9.
- 52:13Clayton Heath enters the lineup for the Hawaiians, replacing Ben Clements.
- 52:17It will be third and 10 for the Hawaiians at the Sun's 28 yard line.
- 52:22Irlini puts out to the right side, picked up by Jack Hunter, Eisenbarger to the left,
- 52:27and he draws double coverage.
- 52:30Johnson backing into the pocket, looks, fires long, Kelsey a great catch,
- 52:34down to the 9 yard line.
- 52:37The Sun defenders are saying that Kelsey didn't catch it.
- 52:41Eisenbarger is saying yes he did, and the catch holds up a tremendous grab.
- 52:47As he went high in the air, stretched out all 16-6 inches, and the Sun players are furious.
- 52:56It looked like Kelsey didn't have the ball under control as he fell to the ground,
- 53:00but he evidently brought it in.
- 53:03And at first that goal to go for the Hawaiians at the Sun 9, a fantastic catch by Kelsey.
- 53:10As he went up high over two defenders, the rookies from Missouri with a big grab,
- 53:16his second key reception tonight.
- 53:20An earlier reception gave the Hawaiians a first and goal to go situation.
- 53:23Al Davis then took it over, and Kelsey sets the ball up inside the 10 again,
- 53:29this time with the 9, first and goal.
- 53:31Hawaiians leading 7-0.
- 53:33And the fans are booing.
- 53:35The give to Al Davis, a lot of left tackle.
- 53:37He finds a little daylight and gets down to about the 6-yard line.
- 53:41Davis, a third-year veteran from Tennessee State, brought down by middle linebacker Eric Patton
- 53:47and defensive tackle Charles DeGeneres.
- 53:51It'll be second and goal to go at the 6 as the play comes into the bench.
- 53:55John Kelsey with three receptions tonight, good for 50 yards.
- 54:01Kelsey has to be a strong candidate for all league honors to tight end.
- 54:05He's had a tremendous season.
- 54:08Delaney and Eisenbarger amidst booze put out to the left side.
- 54:12Eisenbarger comes in motion.
- 54:14Long count by Johnson, takes the pass off, back to Blitz, he fires it and it's batted down.
- 54:20Pass was knocked down by Jim Baker, but Johnson was nearly knocked down by one of the linebackers
- 54:26who was blitzing that time.
- 54:29Pass was broken up by Baker, and Cleveland's band was blitzing.
- 54:34Johnson had to unload the ball in a hurry.
- 54:38As he sent everybody out on pass routes that time and nobody was left to block.
- 54:43Johnson nearly had his head taken off.
- 54:46Third down and goal at the 6.
- 54:49Trady Richardson in the ball game, he's put out to the left side along with Delaney.
- 54:54Tied in, Kelsey on the right side, as again you hear the booze.
- 54:58Johnson plays big, back to throw.
- 55:00Look, the pressure is on, fires for Davis, and the ball is guard loose in the green yard line.
- 55:05It goes in complete.
- 55:07So it's field goal time for the Hawaiians as R.A. Coppies comes on.
- 55:11Coppies, a rookie from Texas Arlington.
- 55:16He has six field goals this year, his longest 49 yards.
- 55:21Randy Jarson has hit on six of 13 passes in this first half for 84 yards.
- 55:27Weiss will spot the ball down at the 13 yard line.
- 55:31This is a 23 yard field goal attempt.
- 55:35A wide angle to the left, the snap, the slot, the kick is up, and it is good.
- 55:40So a timeout on the field with the score, the Hawaiians 10 and the Sun nothing.
- 55:46The time is ripe if you're the type and this ain't no hype.
- 55:49The Bachelors 3 for you and me.
- 55:51Come and see one of the swanginest places in town.
- 55:54All day Sundays, ladies day with happy hour prices all day long for you sweethearts.
- 55:58And live music to set your little feet to tappin'.

- 56:04They stay open until 2 a.m.
- 56:06Come on in to the Bachelors 3 air conditioned, comfortable, relaxing atmosphere.
- 56:10The Bachelors 3, the place to be on Kapi'olani across from the Toho Theater.
- 56:16Wholesale Kelly Blue Book Prices.
- 56:18That's right, at Dotson of Hawaii,
- 56:21we're pricing a large number of our used cars at Wholesale Kelly Blue Book Prices.
- 56:25It's the blue tag clearance sale.
- 56:27Come in to any Dotson of Hawaii location and take your pick.
- 56:30All the cars that have the giant blue tag are priced at the current Wholesale Kelly Blue Book Price.
- 56:35It's for a limited time only so don't delay.
- 56:37Our used car locations are at 650 Kapi'olani Boulevard in Kailua, Waipahu, and Wahiowa at the airport or in Lihue.
- 56:47RA Kapi'olani is set to kick off after kicking a 23-yard field goal, a high short kick.
- 56:52It bounces into 22.
- 56:53Dotson is trying to track it down, picks it up, and he falls out of bounds.
- 56:57A poor move by Dotson, and he's bruised by the fans.
- 57:02The ball was bouncing around and looked like it was going to roll out of bounds on the far side of the field.
- 57:07And if it had gone out, it would have been a five-yard penalty against the Hawaiians, an automatic penalty.
- 57:12But Dotson tried to pick it up and then tried to do a little tightrope back on the far sideline but stumbled out of bounds.
- 57:19And so Southern California will take over at their 11-yard line, the kind of mistake a rookie will make from time to time.
- 57:28And you can be sure somebody's going to have a word or two to say to keep Dotson on the sideline.
- 57:34First and 10 for the sun.
- 57:35As Adams moves up under center, they give up the middle as to Greg Hurd, and he runs into a pile and is brought down at the 13.
- 57:41Levi Stanley on the stop.
- 57:44Burnham and Larch at the end.
- 57:46East of Stanley to tackle.
- 57:47Hester Backus and Snidecky, the linebackers.
- 57:50Brown and Williams at the corners, and Andre and Dettweiler are to save people.
- 57:5711-36 remaining in the first half.
- 58:00The Hawaiians on top, 10 and nothing.
- 58:02A three-yard touchdown run by Al Davis and a 23-yard field goal by R.A. Coppage.
- 58:08Harris and Williams split to the left side.
- 58:10Dave Parks at the tight end and split out about five yards to the right.
- 58:13Adams turns, gives to Ralph Nelson, and he chops down as he crosses the 15.
- 58:18Ron East bringing him down.
- 58:20And so far the front four doing an outstanding job.
- 58:23And earlier, Lev Burnham talked about how the front four will have to play tonight.
- 58:28We've got to do what we did last time, Melvin.
- 58:31We've got to do a better job because last time I don't think they were very keyed up.
- 58:34This time I know they're going to be keyed up, and the Alphans have run a damn good one.
- 58:38And we're just going to have to put more pressure on Adams,
- 58:42and we're going to have to get eight or ten sacks in this game.
- 58:44We only got six last time.
- 58:46And they've already gotten to Mr. Adams at least once tonight that I can recall.
- 58:51Third down, five for the Sun at their 16-yard line.
- 58:54Hawaiians leading 10 to nothing.
- 58:55Adams will grow. Back he goes.
- 58:57Here comes the big rush. The fighter is on and they sack him.
- 58:59Back in the two-yard line.
- 59:01Carl Lurch getting in there.
- 59:05And he's going to go with Ron East. Lev Burnham was there as well.
- 59:08So perfect timing as you just heard Lev Burnham talking about the big pass rush.
- 59:13They had to keep the pressure on Adams. They had to get to him.
- 59:16And that they did as they dumped him back in the three-yard line.
- 59:19It'll be fourth and 18, and Hale and the fighter comes in.
- 59:24A ferocious pass rush that time by the front four.
- 59:28Hale will be kicking from the back line of the end zone.
- 59:32And he's mostly waiting for it at the Sun 40.
- 59:35And a bad snap would probably drive Hale and right out of the end zone.
- 59:40He waits for it. Good snap.
- 59:42But he gets the ball away. A low line drive kick.
- 59:45And it's taken by Willie Williams.
- 59:48That's the 35 right to tackle. The 30. Up to the 25. The 20.
- 59:51The 15. And down to the 10-yard line.
- 59:54Willie Williams, who was about 10 yards in front of John Moseley on the return,
- 59:59gets the ball in and brought it back to the nine-yard line.
- 1:00:02A 33-yard return. Make that a 33-yard, positive 24-yard return.
- 1:00:08And a timeout on the field with the score. The Hawaiians 10 and the Sun, nothing.
- 1:00:13Come up to Fisher Hawaii next to Gibson. A poona poona by a street stall.
- 1:00:18Getting ripped off on office furniture and supplies.
- 1:00:20Waiting for mainland back orders. Well, my friend, Fisher Hawaii undersells their competitors by 20, 30, 40, sometimes 50 percent.
- 1:00:25And they have $750,000 worth of merchandise in stock right now.
- 1:00:29Hey, hey, that merchandise is moving as the prices are down.
- 1:00:32We got the only office product supermarket in town.
- 1:00:35Fisher Hawaii, for your office supplies. Right prices, right products, right now.
- 1:00:42Here's your safe deposit box, sir. Thank you.
- 1:00:46I haven't looked in here in years.
- 1:00:49Every Bank of Hawaii Gold account includes a safe deposit box up to a value of $8 a year where available.
- 1:00:55There's that policy. It's just one of a dozen services you get with a Bank of Hawaii Gold account.
- 1:01:00Look at these pictures.
- 1:01:01A safe deposit box is really a worthwhile thing to have for valuable papers and treasured personal belongings.
- 1:01:06Give me skate key. Gold account. My classroom. It makes life a whole lot easier.
- 1:01:12First and goal to go for the Hawaiians at the Sun nine yard line following a 24 yard punt return by Willie Williams.
- 1:01:19Johnson will throw doubles as he backs up, but he's wobbling as he got the ball away.
- 1:01:23A flag going down and Johnson really took a shot from Dave Roller.
- 1:01:28And Randy is down on the turf. He looks to be OK.
- 1:01:33And every time he goes down, I think the coaching staff shudders.
- 1:01:39A holding penalty against the Hawaiians, but there was no keeping Roller out of there that time.
- 1:01:46That's Corny Johnson.
- 1:01:50The left, or make that Bob Richards the right tackle, tried to stop Roller, but he simply blew in there.
- 1:01:59A 10 yard penalty against the Hawaiians back to the 19.
- 1:02:06So it'll be first and goal to go.
- 1:02:1019 yard line. Hawaiians leading 10 to nothing.
- 1:02:15See what Johnson will do this time. He starts to wade into the right side.
- 1:02:18Brady Richardson split left.
- 1:02:21Plymouth and Davis to running backs behind Randy Johnson.
- 1:02:25Johnson gives to Al Davis, following the block of Plymouth, and he's dropped a fine defensive play into the 18 yard line by John Hoffman, the right defensive end.
- 1:02:34Hoffman is playing himself quite a ball game tonight.
- 1:02:39Dave Roller was helping out as well.
- 1:02:44So it'll be second down and goal to go at the 18.
- 1:02:51As Johnson brings the team up, 10 to nothing.
- 1:02:55The Hawaiians on top. 923 remaining in the first half, ready to throw.
- 1:02:59Lock one for the right corner of the end zone and the flag is thrown. As Delaney and Jack Connors, the defenders, we're pushing each other down at about the 5 yard line.
- 1:03:09So we're going to have an interference call. And judging from Delaney's reaction, it'll be defensive pass interference.
- 1:03:15That's the call. Jack Connors is called for pushing Delaney.
- 1:03:21That will give them an automatic first down. So it'll be first and goal to go again, but this time inside the 10.
- 1:03:29Now Delaney's a tough customer to handle, the leading pass catcher in the league.
- 1:03:33Delaney's working against the rookie Jack Connors.
- 1:03:38He's caught the ball inside the fly.
- 1:03:42And it'll be first and goal to go. The Hawaiians have clearly dominated this first half.
- 1:03:48Brady Richardson goes to the right side. Now a mix up, and Johnson wants a time out.
- 1:03:52So a time out on the field with the score. The Hawaiians, 10 and the sun, nothing.
- 1:03:57Time supermarkets are all set for your Thanksgiving shopping.
- 1:04:01The woman in the blue coat has seen to it that you'll probably be able to find everything you need to make the dinner and the day a complete success.

- 1:04:19It's all waiting for you and your Thanksgiving shopping list at any one of the 10 time supermarkets.
- 1:04:25Where am I?
- 1:04:28You shot. Me find you with other Rangers. You lone Ranger.
- 1:04:34Listen, Scar, those outlaws will recognize me. I need a disguise. A mask.
- 1:04:39Me have on several masks with me today. How do you like this number?
- 1:04:43Do you have anything in black?
- 1:04:45No, but I can custom make you one with scotch pinless pattern holder.
- 1:04:48You sketch out a pattern and we spray them with scotch pinless pattern holder.
- 1:04:52Stick them on fabric and cut them out. No need pins.
- 1:04:55That looks great.
- 1:04:56Nice sequence.
- 1:04:57Super gay GMP!
- 1:05:01First and goal to go for the Hawaiians at the sun five yard line.
- 1:05:06Following a pass interference call against Jack Connors to the sun, Hawaiians leading 10 to nothing.
- 1:05:12917 remaining in the first half.
- 1:05:14Eisenbarger splits to the right. They keep Delaney in tight on the left side.
- 1:05:18Clements and Davis running back. As Eisenbarger goes in motion, Johnson with a play fake.
- 1:05:23Straight back to throw. The rush is on. Fires and wide open in the end zone. It's tight end John Kelsey.
- 1:05:28Touchdown Hawaiians. Kelsey was wide open.
- 1:05:35And I can't get over this Southern California team. They look lifeless here in the first half.
- 1:05:40They're doing very few signs of life.
- 1:05:42The Hawaiians are just doing everything right Southern California. Not doing much right at all.
- 1:05:48It is 17 to nothing as they line up for the action point.
- 1:05:52Weiss comes in at quarterback. He sends Eisenbarger to the right.
- 1:05:58Norris waiting for the snap. He normally takes lots of time.
- 1:06:02And he does. Takes the snap. Rolls to his right. Looking to throw.
- 1:06:06Fires and his arm is hit from behind and the pass goes incomplete.
- 1:06:10So it's 17 to nothing. The Hawaiians on top.
- 1:06:16And a timeout on the field with the score. The Hawaiians 17 and the Sun nothing.
- 1:06:21The Bachelors 3, one of the swinginest places in town.
- 1:06:25Come and see the Bachelors 3. Now open for lunch from 11 to 2.

- 1:07:24And he sends it back deep waiting for RA Coppich kickoff.
- 1:07:2717 to nothing. The Hawaiians on top.
- 1:07:29Kaki sends a low line drive that is taken by one of the up man Buckman at the 20 yard line.
- 1:07:34The ball bounces, he picks it up. He's up to 25, spun around and dropped into 31 yard line.
- 1:07:39Let's pause now for station identification. This is the Coconut Wireless Sports Network.
- 1:07:45KGMB Sports.
- 1:07:47Joe Moore reminding you the University of Hawaii tackles Fresno State Saturday night at 7.05 on KGMB Home
- 1:07:54and Dave Ulrich off on the plate. Clayton Heath who was part of the outstanding special teams player by the
- 1:07:59Hawaiians players was in there on the tackle along with Dave Ulrich.
- 1:08:02They lead first and 10 for the Sun from their 32 yard line. They trail 17 to nothing.
- 1:08:07With nine minutes remaining in the first half. And it's been all Hawaiians so far.
- 1:08:12Terry Lizzie's flip to the right, Icarus to the left. The back's in the eye.
- 1:08:16Adams to throw, rolling to his right. Tries to set up, gonna have to throw on the run.
- 1:08:20Fires and it's complete. Making the catch is Dave Harkes to side end.
- 1:08:26Make that Dave for you. And he gets down here midfield.
- 1:08:3017 yard pick up on the play and they'll spot the ball just inside the 50 on the Southern California side.
- 1:08:37Middle linebacker Jim Snydecky on the stop. Icarus leads the ball game for the Sun.
- 1:08:45And let's see who's in there in place of him. Lizzie is one of the wide receivers.
- 1:08:52Harkes is in there. And Keith Denson is in the ball game as the wide receiver.
- 1:09:02Adams on the give up the middle of the herd. He pops through a hole and gets down to the Hawaiian 45
- 1:09:07where Levi Stanley brings him down.
- 1:09:11An important point to consider, Southern California is playing without their top two rushers.
- 1:09:17New find rookie James McAllister who is not in uniform tonight. He's got all kinds of problems.
- 1:09:23A bad knee, a bad ankle. And Herman Johnson who has a pinched nerve in his shoulder, neck area.
- 1:09:31Neither one of them are playing tonight, although Johnson is in uniform.
- 1:09:35Second and five for the Sun at the Hawaiian 45 yard line trailing 17 to nothing.
- 1:09:40Adams stays on the ground to give us the herd and he squirms up the middle down to about the 42
- 1:09:45where he runs into Ron East.
- 1:09:47East is a playoff veteran and he talked about how it feels entering tonight's quick ball game.
- 1:09:54Tonight's game is as important as anything he ever played in.
- 1:09:58Mel and I have played in nine championship games before this.
- 1:10:02One was the 1970 Super Bowl along with two other NFL championship games.
- 1:10:08And we have to prepare a little bit better than we have for most games this season
- 1:10:14when you start off in the championship games like we are tonight.
- 1:10:18Veteran Ron East. Adams on the give to Ralph Nelson, off right tackle.
- 1:10:22He had some running room but he lost his footing and fell down at the 36 yard line.
- 1:10:26But he managed to pick up a first down.
- 1:10:28Jim Snydecky, the middle linebacker on the stop.
- 1:10:31So Tom Fears is shuttling running backs in and out of there.
- 1:10:35Dave Williams now comes in and wide receiver as does Icarus.
- 1:10:39Terry Lindsay and Keith Denson go out.
- 1:10:42First and ten for the Sun.
- 1:10:44That's the Hawaiians 38, 17 to nothing.
- 1:10:47The Hawaiians on top, 629 remaining in the half.
- 1:10:51Williams put to the right side.
- 1:10:53Icarus to the left, the backs in the eye, Herd and Nelson.
- 1:10:57Adams to play fake, doubles, fires off the fingertips of Dave Williams and completes.
- 1:11:02The 25 yard line. Defending on the play was Chuck Detweiler.
- 1:11:07Six year veteran from Utah State.
- 1:11:10One of many newcomers to join the Hawaiians team at about midseason
- 1:11:14and really has made a big difference in this club.
- 1:11:17Detweiler was named hitter of the year by his teammates.
- 1:11:20He loves to hit.
- 1:11:23Quite a headhunter.
- 1:11:26Not particularly big at 60 tall and 195 but he really knows how to pop.
- 1:11:31Second down, ten for the Sun.
- 1:11:34That's the Hawaiians 38, man wide to each side, the backs are split.
- 1:11:38Adams on the draw to give it to Herd and he runs right into one of his blockers.
- 1:11:42And he brought down at the 31st.
- 1:11:45Easton Stanley actually made the tackle but Herd ran into one of his blockers, Mike Ryan I believe, a guard.
- 1:11:54Ryan had turned to make the running back coming through the huddle which is kind of an odd, or coming through the line I should say.
- 1:12:01Kind of an odd maneuver and he ran right into his arm.
- 1:12:04Herd down six for the Sun.
- 1:12:07The ball just inside the Hawaiians 35 yard line.
- 1:12:10Block ticking away with 544 remaining in the first half.
- 1:12:14Dave Williams flanks to the right side, picked up by Otto Braun.
- 1:12:18Keith Nenson back in the ball game, is split left, picked up by Willie Williams.
- 1:12:21Adams back into the pocket, looks, fires and is caught by Nenson.
- 1:12:25He took up a road to his end, Willie Williams.
- 1:12:28And it's brought down after picking up a first down.
- 1:12:31I don't know how he managed to hang on to the football but he did.
- 1:12:34A fire reception by Nenson.
- 1:12:36Running a flat pattern over the middle, a 12 yard pick up.
- 1:12:41Herd and Willie Williams, a ten year veteran from Grambling.
- 1:12:44And on the drop, former two time All-Pro with the New York Giants.
- 1:12:48The ball down at the Hawaiians 23 yard line in first and 10 for the Sun.
- 1:12:55Greg Herd leads the ball game and plays Jeffries, comes in and running back.
- 1:13:01So it's Jeffries and Nenson, the two running backs.
- 1:13:04Neither played college football.
- 1:13:06Jeffries played at Cerritos Junior College but that was it.
- 1:13:09And to give is to Jeffries, busting up the middle and gets down to the 20.
- 1:13:12Where Ron East brings him down.
- 1:13:15Hawaiians front four has really come along this year.
- 1:13:18They've made great strides.
- 1:13:20And when you look down the roster, that's about the only part of the team
- 1:13:25that has remained virtually unchanged since training camp.
- 1:13:28They've gone with Berner, the East, Stanley and Lortz, and Greg Wojcicki in reserve
- 1:13:33for the whole season.
- 1:13:35And they've really developed into a fine unit.
- 1:13:37Pick up of three yards at second and seven for the Sun at the Hawaiians 20.
- 1:13:41Southern California down by 17 big ones here in the first half with four minutes remaining.
- 1:13:46Nenson goes in motion.
- 1:13:47Adams will throw, drops into the pocket, looks left, unloads the bomb.
- 1:13:51Williams goes up and a good defensive play in the left corner again thrown by Willie Williams.
- 1:13:56He tipped the ball away.
- 1:13:59Had Williams made the reception, I think he would have been out of bounds.
- 1:14:04Good defensive play by the old boy Willie Williams.
- 1:14:08So it'll be third and seven.
- 1:14:11See if the Hawaiians can hold here.
- 1:14:13Greg Wojcicki checks in on the front four.
- 1:14:16Six, seven, 270 in his fourth year for the USC.
- 1:14:20Played with the Chargers and Rams.
- 1:14:24Williams to the right.
- 1:14:27And the back shift out of the eye.
- 1:14:29Big down for Southern California if they hope to get back in the game.
- 1:14:31Adams back pedaling, fires these hits, and he gets his pass away,
- 1:14:35but Harris can't catch it at the 16.
- 1:14:38The ball was thrown low down around Harris' shoe top,
- 1:14:42and the big guy tried to reach over and get it, but the ball hit the ground.
- 1:14:46And East hit Adams just as he unloaded the football.
- 1:14:52So it's been a tough night for Tony Adams.
- 1:14:55And Rod Garcia, the field goal kicker, comes in.
- 1:14:58He missed one earlier tonight.
- 1:15:01The second attempt will be from the 27th, so it's a 37-yard field goal.
- 1:15:05And the ball just about straight on.
- 1:15:08Adams to hold. Garcia to try.
- 1:15:12The snap, the spot, the kick is up, has the distance, and it is good.
- 1:15:17Garcia's field goal is good.
- 1:15:20So a time out on the field with the score, the Hawaiians 17 and the Sun, three.
- 1:15:25Will you try our primo? Why, you won't believe the taste.
- 1:15:28It's a taste that'll make the Hawaiian proud.
- 1:15:32In the old tradition of great beer making, we take our place.
- 1:15:35And it's time for us to really shout out loud.
- 1:15:39Primo's coming on. Primo's here.
- 1:15:43Brother, you are tasting it till you're tasting primo beer.
- 1:15:47Taste what's happening. Primo beer.
- 1:15:50Brother, you are tasting it till you're tasting primo beer.
- 1:15:54There's something good going on at the primo brewery, and it's called primo beer,
- 1:15:58the best tasting, best quality beer ever brewed, and completely brewed right here in the islands.
- 1:16:03But we can only tell you what's happened to primo.
- 1:16:05You've really got to taste what's happened. Primo's coming on.
- 1:16:09Primo's coming on. Primo's here.
- 1:16:12Brother, you are tasting it till you're tasting primo beer.
- 1:16:16Taste what's happening. Primo beer.
- 1:16:19Brother, you are tasting it till you're tasting primo beer.
- 1:16:24Rod Garcia sends a line drive kickoff.
- 1:16:27It'll be taken by one of the Hawaiian's up end, Clayton Heath.
- 1:16:30He's across the 35. Up to the 40, the 45.
- 1:16:33Up to the 50 breaks another tackle, and he's brought down a seed.
- 1:16:36It's not 48-yard line.
- 1:16:39I don't know if that was a bad kick by Garcia, or whether he wanted to try to kick the ball
- 1:16:43over the short man to avoid a long run back.
- 1:16:46But at any rate, Clayton Heath brought the ball back 27 yards.
- 1:16:50He was not one of the two deep ends.
- 1:16:54So once again, the Hawaiian's with good field position. It's a sun 48.
- 1:16:58The Hawaiian's are top 17 to 3.
- 1:17:01A 37-yard field goal by Rod Garcia. The only score so far by the sun.
- 1:17:09Delaney and Eisenbacher split to the right side.
- 1:17:12Johnson gives to Al Davis up the middle.
- 1:17:14He finds some running room and fights his way up to the 40.
- 1:17:17Pickup for about seven yards.
- 1:17:20Leading the way for him, center Jim Cadell and the two guards, John Wohlberg and Jeff Zebe.
- 1:17:26Baker on the stop along with Jim Price.
- 1:17:29Gain of seven. It'll be second and three for the Hawaiian.
- 1:17:33And the sun 40.
- 1:17:38Johnson. Saunders up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:17:41Long, tall Texans. Right at Texas A&I.
- 1:17:46Waiting for the snap. The give is to Clements and he finds the running difficult.
- 1:17:50He cracks into the line.
- 1:17:52Gets a couple of yards up to about the 36.
- 1:17:56Where Charles C. Jenais, a 270-pound rookie from San Jose State, brings him down.
- 1:18:02Officials time out as they bring out the dickarive for a measurement.
- 1:18:0617 to 3 to the Hawaiian's on top with 2.55.
- 1:18:10Remaining here in the first half.
- 1:18:13They stretch it out.
- 1:18:15The Hawaiians have dominated this half although Southern California is showing signs of coming to life.
- 1:18:21Johnson holding up his hands to show how much yards they need and really only about five or six inches.
- 1:18:29So call it third and one.
- 1:18:32For the Hawaiians, they try to keep his drive alive with the sun 37.
- 1:18:36Eisenbarger splits to the right side. They'll put a new football in play.
- 1:18:42Johnson moves up under center.
- 1:18:45Takes the snap to give up the middle to Clements who dives forward and I'm not sure if he got it.
- 1:18:50He needed very little as he plowed into the pack.
- 1:18:54At the line of scrimmage, we'll have to wait and see as they unpile.
- 1:18:57They may bring out the dickaron once again.
- 1:18:59That's what they're going to do.
- 1:19:02The latest report on that Florida-Philadelphia game, Florida was leading 18 to 3 with two minutes left in the contest.
- 1:19:09So it looks like the Blazers will be moving into the semifinal playoff round against Memphis next week.
- 1:19:15Hawaiians have the first down.
- 1:19:22So it's first and 10 for the Hawaiians with the sun 37.
- 1:19:25As we near the two-minute mark, they'll take a timeout for the two-minute warning.
- 1:19:31Eisenbarger flanks to the right side. They keep Delaney in tight on the left side.
- 1:19:35The back splits behind Randy Johnson.
- 1:19:39Eisenbarger starts in motion, does a little stutter step.
- 1:19:42Johnson takes the snap to give it to Al Davis following John Wilber.
- 1:19:45Gets to the corner and he's brought down at the 35-yard line.
- 1:19:50Eric Patton, the middle linebacker, on the stop.
- 1:19:53And that will probably be the last play before the two-minute warning.
- 1:19:58A timeout on the field with the score, the Hawaiians 17 and the sun 3.

- 1:20:37Compliments of Curry Boy Smorgie.
- 1:20:39You don't have to buy a thing, just drop by any one of the four Hawaiian Curry Boy Smorgies and fill out an entry blank.
- 1:20:44You can win one of two neighbor island trips via Hawaiian Airlines, a Panasonic digital clock radio, Seiko watch, and more prizes.
- 1:20:50All on display at UCRTV 804 Keiamoku.
- 1:20:53The Thanksgiving drawing now at Curry Boys.
- 1:20:55Kaneohe and Waikiki in the Outrigger Reef in Coral Seas Hotels.
- 1:21:04Second down and eight for the Hawaiians.
- 1:21:07At the sun 35 yard line, time was taken for the two minute warning here in the first half.
- 1:21:12The Hawaiians leading 17 to 3, and they have clearly dominated this first half of play.
- 1:21:17The home folks here in Anaheim have not had much to cheer about.
- 1:21:21This club has had problems lately.
- 1:21:23You probably read about them.
- 1:21:25The players haven't been paid for a week or so, but they're better off than some of the teams in the league.
- 1:21:30But the players held a meeting yesterday, the Southern California players, voted to support the management and coaches, and come out and give their best tonight.
- 1:21:38But they have been slow to get started.
- 1:21:41Second and eight.
- 1:21:43As Johnson moves up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:21:46Brandy steps in, takes the snap, plays it, back up, oh here comes the blitz.
- 1:21:50In trouble, he's bounced around, and he's going to be sacked way back at the 46 yard line.
- 1:21:57Gene Howard on a safety blitz, led the charge.
- 1:22:01And it looks like an army roaring in there.
- 1:22:03Johnson looks like a pinball bouncing around.
- 1:22:06He was hit three or four times before he finally went down.
- 1:22:10An 11 yard loss on this play.
- 1:22:13It'll be third down 19 for the Hawaiians.
- 1:22:17At the Sun 45 yard line.
- 1:22:21Brady Richardson comes in and wide receiver replacing Eisenbarger.
- 1:22:25Johnson simply did not have time to set up that time.
- 1:22:28Richardson splits to the right.
- 1:22:31And Delaney goes wide to the left.
- 1:22:34Johnson on the ground, gives up the middle of Clayton.
- 1:22:37He's across the 40, 35, and down to the 32 yard line.
- 1:22:41He's not a quick opener up the middle.
- 1:22:44But he is short of the first down.
- 1:22:47Good run by Clayton, the 14 yards.
- 1:22:50But it'll be fourth and five.
- 1:22:58Let's see what the Hawaiians will do as they have the ball at the 31 yard line of Southern California.
- 1:23:05At Backus the putter is in.
- 1:23:10That would have been a field goal attempt of better than 50 yards.
- 1:23:13So they're not going to risk it. Backus will be punting.
- 1:23:16He'll be standing at the Sun 48.
- 1:23:19Gary takes the snap and a high rainmaker straight up in the air.
- 1:23:24And it is taken by Denson and the flag goes down as he rustles down the 10 yard line.
- 1:23:30And I think that will be a penalty against the Hawaiians for interference.
- 1:23:3417 yard punt by Backus straight up in the air.
- 1:23:37It went as high as it did far.
- 1:23:40That's a call interference against the Hawaiians.
- 1:23:44As they did not give Keith Denson enough room.
- 1:23:48Second interference call on a punt against the Hawaiians.
- 1:23:52A 15 yarder will be stepped off to the Sun 29.
- 1:23:5641 seconds remaining in the first half.
- 1:23:59Hawaiians leading 17 to 3.
- 1:24:04Getting back to Southern California's attitude coming into this game.
- 1:24:07Dave Williams, their player representative, said that the team had their best practice in three weeks yesterday
- 1:24:13in getting ready for this game.
- 1:24:14So the spirit is running high after some problems the last couple of weeks.
- 1:24:18Adams gives up the middle of Greg Third. He punches across the 30.
- 1:24:22Some of the fans threw as it looked like Southern California is just going to run out the clock.
- 1:24:27Ron East on the stop defensively.
- 1:24:32Southern California now takes its time out with 36 seconds remaining.
- 1:24:3917 to 3 the Hawaiians on top.
- 1:24:42There have been a lot of boos here in Anaheim Stadium tonight.
- 1:24:46It certainly does not look like the Southern California team I've seen on two previous occasions.
- 1:24:53Still they're a big play team that can beat you if they get one or two opportunities.
- 1:24:59They're only 14 points back now as we near the end of the first half.
- 1:25:04We have not seen Kermit Johnson, the fine running back for the Sun,
- 1:25:08who rushed for over a thousand yards during the regular season.
- 1:25:12He's out of action with a pitch nerve. James McAllister, their other top running back, is also out
- 1:25:17with a sorted knee and ankle problem.
- 1:25:20Maybe Tom Fierce wasn't exaggerating when he said this club is in the worst physical condition of the year.
- 1:25:26I think a lot of people said, oh sure Tom.
- 1:25:29Thought that he was putting them on, trying to pull a con job.
- 1:25:32And maybe trying to get the Hawaiians to let their guard down a bit.
- 1:25:36Second down, seven for the Sun at their 32 yard line.
- 1:25:4036 seconds left in the half.
- 1:25:42And everybody out wide. Johnson, short drop back, fires complete to Nelson at the 45.
- 1:25:47Gets up near midfield.
- 1:25:50Nelson nearly broke away.
- 1:25:53As he came out of the backfield to make the catch good for 18 yards.
- 1:25:57It'll be first and 10 for Southern California.
- 1:25:59And once again they take a timeout.
- 1:26:01Tony Adams goes over to the sideline to talk to his coach, Tom Fierce.
- 1:26:07Here are a couple of movie stars at the ballpark tonight.
- 1:26:11I'm using that term loosely.
- 1:26:13Ernie Wheelwright, one of the assistant coaches for the Sun,
- 1:26:17appears in the movie The Longest Yard with Burt Reynolds.
- 1:26:21And for the Hawaiians, John Eisenbarger appears in a movie called Black Six.
- 1:26:26That starred a number of pro football players, Lem Barney, Carl Eller, named just a couple.
- 1:26:32And Eisenbarger played a character by the name of Moose King,
- 1:26:35a leader of a white rival motorcycle gang.
- 1:26:40I don't know about Eisenbarger, but I know Ernie Wheelwright is hoping to pursue an acting career.
- 1:26:47He's been in several movies.
- 1:26:49Greg Wojcik comes in on defense for the Hawaiians, replacing Levi Stanley.
- 1:26:53That defensive tackle, 30 seconds left in the half.
- 1:26:56It's 17-3 in favor of the Hawaiians.
- 1:27:00The winner of this ballgame will meet Birmingham next week.
- 1:27:04Terry Lindsay splits to the right side as does Ike Harris.
- 1:27:07He sets it to the left side, and Ralph Nelson is a flatback on the left side, so they have one setback.
- 1:27:13Adams, backpedaling, looking, fires to the short man, Jeffery,
- 1:27:16with the 45 running laterally, still on his feet, and he chops out at the Hawaiians 47.
- 1:27:24The 50-cups break out down on the field.
- 1:27:27Adrian Young is going at it, along with somebody from Southern California, Paul Seiler, an offensive tackle.
- 1:27:36And again, Southern California takes the time out.
- 1:27:40We'll stay right here with just 22 seconds left.
- 1:27:46Proceeds from the playoffs will be put in the pool,
- 1:27:49and 70% of those proceeds will be turned over to the players on a 60-to-41 loss basis.
- 1:27:55In other words, the winners will get 60%, the losers 40%.
- 1:27:59They're talking to the players.
- 1:28:01They really feel that they're not going to be playing in the playoffs for a lot of money,
- 1:28:05because there's so many expenses involved now in keeping the league afloat.
- 1:28:10And it's amazing when you talk to guys like Corny Johnson, John Wilber,
- 1:28:15and others who played in big ball games, in NFL playoff games, in some cases in Super Bowls,
- 1:28:21they'll tell you that they're just as high for this ball game tonight as they were for any Super Bowl.
- 1:28:27A lot of pride involved in this game.
- 1:28:32Second out and five for the Sun at the Hawaiian 46.
- 1:28:35His time is running out here in the first half.
- 1:28:3722 seconds left.
- 1:28:40Adams, the rookie, takes the snap, drops straight back, sets up, plant, fires long.
- 1:28:45He's got a man open.
- 1:28:46And a collision at the 25-yard line.
- 1:28:52The intended receiver was Ike Harris, who's still flat on his back.
- 1:28:56And he collided with Chuck Detweiler.
- 1:29:00I told you the Hawaiians had named Detweiler the hitter of the year.
- 1:29:03That was the perfect instant.
- 1:29:05Harris is still down.
- 1:29:07It looked like two airplanes colliding in midair.
- 1:29:10Harris flat on his back down at the 22-yard line.
- 1:29:15Ike is the bigger of the two at 6'5.
- 1:29:17Detweiler only 6 feet tall.
- 1:29:20And Names really hit.
- 1:29:2216 seconds left in the first half.
- 1:29:2717 to 3, the Hawaiians on top.
- 1:29:29Getting back to the players taking part in the playoffs with not much money at stake, merely pride.
- 1:29:36Randy Johnson was telling me a cute story.
- 1:29:38He said that he was talking to his little daughter on the telephone.
- 1:29:42I believe she lived down in Florida.
- 1:29:44She said, Daddy, are you going to be making lots of money in the playoffs?
- 1:29:47And he said, No, dear, I'm afraid not.
- 1:29:51And she said, Well, will you come home if I crack open my piggy bank?
- 1:29:56But Randy will be here for a while at least.
- 1:29:59Ike Harris is still down as they bring him to his feet.
- 1:30:05And if he's hurt seriously, that will be a tough blow to the son.
- 1:30:10They have a number of receivers already banged up.
- 1:30:12Dave Williams is playing with a badly sprained ankle.
- 1:30:15Dave Parks has a bad back.
- 1:30:17Harris is being helped off the field.
- 1:30:20The big rookie from Iowa State who is in all big eight selections, three years in a row.
- 1:30:25Third down five for the Sun at the Hawaiian 46, 16 seconds left in the half.
- 1:30:35Dave Williams twists to the right.
- 1:30:38Keith Denson to the left.
- 1:30:40Nelson is in the slot left.
- 1:30:41Adams will throw.
- 1:30:42Back he goes.
- 1:30:43Steps up in the pocket looking to throw.
- 1:30:44Unloads a ball.
- 1:30:45Denson is open.
- 1:30:46He's got a hard touchdown.
- 1:30:48With nine seconds left in the half.
- 1:30:51A foul from Tony Adams.
- 1:30:53The key tester.
- 1:30:55He fights the ball in the end zone.
- 1:30:58Now the Sun now creeping closer.
- 1:31:01It's 17 to 10.
- 1:31:05I mentioned this team is a closer.
- 1:31:07They can beat you with a big play.
- 1:31:10Adams to Denson.
- 1:31:13A 46-yard touchdown pass.
- 1:31:17And it's 17 to 10.
- 1:31:20That brings the Sun fans to their feet.
- 1:31:24They had very little to cheer about here in the first half.
- 1:31:26And quickly things have changed.
- 1:31:28It was 17 to nothing.
- 1:31:30Now it's 17 to 10.
- 1:31:34Southern California will go for the action point for the two and a half yard line.
- 1:31:39It's then Dave Williams wide right.
- 1:31:44Bradley is in at tight end.
- 1:31:47Jefferies and Nelson the running back behind Adams.
- 1:31:49Adams will throw a rolling to his right.
- 1:31:51Fires a shot by Jefferies to the action point.
- 1:31:54Jefferies swinging out of the backfield.
- 1:31:57Adams rolling to his right.
- 1:31:59Found him in the right corner of the end zone.
- 1:32:01So it's 17 to 11.
- 1:32:03The Hawaiians on top with nine seconds remaining in the first half.
- 1:32:07After being dormant for most of two quarters, Southern California has come alive here in the closing second.
- 1:32:15Six-point ball game.
- 1:32:18Just as it looks the Hawaiians can blow the Sun right off the field.
- 1:32:23Rod Garcia teeing up the football with the Sun 30.
- 1:32:27You can hear some whistling and shouting around the ballpark.
- 1:32:31Dropping back deep for the Hawaiians.
- 1:32:34Burning O'Leary and Brady.
- 1:32:36O'Leary on the near side.
- 1:32:37Richardson on the far side.
- 1:32:43And Garcia will kick off.
- 1:32:46That's the kind of kick he chooses to use this time.
- 1:32:49He tried his swift kick the last time.
- 1:32:52A high short kick.
- 1:32:54Brady Richardson will take it at the 18.
- 1:32:56Up to the 20.
- 1:32:57The 25.
- 1:32:58He gets it to 30.
- 1:32:59Spins away.
- 1:33:00Still on his feet.
- 1:33:01And he's ruffled out of bounds with a 32-yard line.
- 1:33:05That may be the final play.
- 1:33:07Clock showing one second left.
- 1:33:0914-yard return by Richardson.
- 1:33:13One second left in the first half.
- 1:33:17So let's see what the Hawaiians will do if they have the ball at the Sun 32.
- 1:33:22See if Johnson simply falls to the ground or if he'll try to get off the play.
- 1:33:27I would guess, it's only a guess, and I've been known to be wrong, and my guess is that he simply left the clock run out.
- 1:33:35With only one second left.
- 1:33:37Rather than risk throwing an interception and having a run back.
- 1:33:41Let's see if my strategy and Randy's agrees to give it to Clements up the middle.
- 1:33:46Squirts through a hole and gets down to the 42 and that'll be it.
- 1:33:49As they run out the clock.
- 1:33:51So there's the gun down at the end of the first half with the score.
- 1:33:55The Hawaiians 17 and the Southern California Sun 11.
- 1:34:0117-11.
- 1:34:02The Hawaiians leading as we start the second half.
- 1:34:05And they're leading 17-0.
- 1:34:08They saw Southern California toward 11 points in the second quarter.
- 1:34:16Garcia, soccer-style kicker.
- 1:34:19And he's ready.
- 1:34:20He moves up to the football.
- 1:34:22A high end-over-end kick.
- 1:34:24Richardson takes it at the 11-yard line.
- 1:34:26It's 15, 20, 25.
- 1:34:29Looking for blocking.
- 1:34:30Spun around and dropped at the 30-yard line.
- 1:34:33And the return was on the right that time.
- 1:34:36Richardson brought down at the 30-yard return.
- 1:34:40So he first to 10 for the Hawaiians.
- 1:34:45Johnson is not all the way quarterback.
- 1:34:49Norris Weiss is the only other quarterback in uniform tonight.
- 1:34:52And Hargan did not suit up.
- 1:34:54Eisenbarger and Johnson, or Eisenbarger and Delaney put to the right side.
- 1:35:00Clements and Davis start the second half and running back.
- 1:35:03Kelsey is the tight end on the left side.
- 1:35:05Johnson to throw.
- 1:35:06Fire on Delaney.
- 1:35:07Kim gets a block.
- 1:35:08Turns up field and he's brought down to 35-yard line.
- 1:35:11A little green pass to the blocker out to the right side.
- 1:35:15He's got a bunch of blockers in front of him and picked up 5 yards.
- 1:35:19Jim Brighton on the side.
- 1:35:21Across that offensive line, Jordan Thompson and Bob Richards.
- 1:35:25John Wilbur and Jeff Seedy, the guards, and Jim Cadeo is the center.
- 1:35:30This is probably Cadeo's last year as a pro football player.
- 1:35:34He retired once before and then came out of retirement to join the Hawaiians.
- 1:35:39He suffered a number of injuries this year, but it played very well.
- 1:35:42Second and sixth, Clements up the middle.
- 1:35:44And then he is chopped down and gets to the 37.
- 1:35:48A hard hitting by the Sun defense in the second half.
- 1:35:51Little linebacker Eric Patton on the stop.
- 1:35:53Looking forward, Starr at Notre Dame.
- 1:35:56Eisenbarger comes in.
- 1:35:57Richardson goes out at wide receiver.
- 1:36:01He's had a lot of trouble and suffered a concussion this year.
- 1:36:05Badly bruised the killing tendons.
- 1:36:07He's been pretty well banged up.
- 1:36:09He was a guard for most of his career until they moved the center.
- 1:36:12Johnson with a quick drop back.
- 1:36:14Fires and it's in to play.
- 1:36:15Defended for Eisenbarger.
- 1:36:17Running an out-counter on the left side.
- 1:36:19Veteran Rudy Rettman is here.
- 1:36:21He's very specific defending.
- 1:36:24There will be four to three in the running as it comes on for the Hawaiians.
- 1:36:28Backus, the putter.
- 1:36:31Those Southern California holes on defense on the first series.
- 1:36:36And it looks like that big touchdown perhaps really inspires him.
- 1:36:40He looks like a different ball club right now.
- 1:36:44Keith Denson in single safety at the Sun 22.
- 1:36:48And two men in front of him.
- 1:36:50Backus will be kicking from his 22-yard line.
- 1:36:54The snap, very little pressure, and Backus gets it away.
- 1:36:57A short kick, a wobbly spiral that hits at the 35.
- 1:37:00Denson picks it up.
- 1:37:01He dances up to the 30 and he's knocked down at the 32.
- 1:37:05Gary Backus.
- 1:37:06Gary Backus, the putter, the man who made the first quarter.
- 1:37:10A 34-yard punt.
- 1:37:13And the ball at the 31-yard line, I think at the 32 of Southern California.
- 1:37:19They trail 17 to 11.
- 1:37:23Dave Salverson was also down there on the tackle.
- 1:37:31Adams brings his team up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:37:34Ralph Nelson and Greg Hurd are the running backs.
- 1:37:37Ike Harris is evidently okay.
- 1:37:39He was banged up earlier.
- 1:37:40He's down wide to the left.
- 1:37:41The gift to Nelson.
- 1:37:42And he runs up the back of one of his blockers as he crosses the 35.
- 1:37:46Levi Stanley on the stop.
- 1:37:50Nelson tripped over the feet of Joe Corolo but still managed to pick up four yards to the 36-yard line.
- 1:37:57Second down and six.
- 1:38:01Opening moments of the second half of play.
- 1:38:03The Hawaiians leading 17 to 11.
- 1:38:06Southern California, the Western Division winner and the Hawaiians finishing a distant second of the standing.
- 1:38:13Lindsey and Harris split to the right side this time.
- 1:38:16Adams with the gift to Greg Hurd.
- 1:38:18And Ron East, right off the bar to the ankle and dragged him down.
- 1:38:22East hung on to the right of about two yards.
- 1:38:26Pick up a three by Hurd, a 240-pound rookie.
- 1:38:32And still Southern California has not used Kermit Johnson, their leading rusher.
- 1:38:35He was expected to play tonight.
- 1:38:38In fact, they tell me he's not even in uniform.
- 1:38:42They said earlier in the day he hoped to be playing.
- 1:38:45The Sun playing without their top two rushers, the Blair pair, Johnson and McAllister.
- 1:38:51Now a mix-up of some kind, Adams turns to say something to the official.
- 1:38:55I think he wants a new football.
- 1:38:57They're going to put one in play.
- 1:38:59The reason they call McAllister and Johnson the Blair pair is because they played at Blair High School together.
- 1:39:05In fact, they've played football together since the fourth grade.
- 1:39:08And they're both on the sidelines together tonight.
- 1:39:11Third and three for the Sun.
- 1:39:13Up the middle, Ralph Nelson, a big four and he rips up to the 47-yard line.
- 1:39:20Nelson on the carry brought down by Gary Backes.
- 1:39:24Pick up a ten yards on the play.
- 1:39:27Nelson with good acceleration and no college experience.
- 1:39:32Attended Centennial High School in Los Angeles and he was signed following a tryout camp.
- 1:39:37He's just 20 years of age.
- 1:39:39The Hawaiians made an attempt to acquire Nelson in a trade earlier this year, but Southern California said no go.
- 1:39:45First and ten for the Sun.
- 1:39:48Adams, play fake, back to throw, pumps, looks, unloads it long, he hangs it up for Harris and it's incomplete.
- 1:39:54Down at the 15-yard line.
- 1:39:57Harris was well covered.
- 1:39:59Andre and Deadweiler both back there.
- 1:40:03Looking incomplete fast.
- 1:40:06Adams, the leading passer in the league.
- 1:40:09He's got the highest of passing records in Utah State.
- 1:40:14Once completed 31 passes in a single game.
- 1:40:18And in his senior year in Utah State, he was ranked third in the nation in passing, a second total offense.
- 1:40:26Gary Lipsey flanks out to the right side.
- 1:40:34And to the left side is Keith Denson.
- 1:40:36Adams back into the pocket, looks, fires, and he's off the hands of Greg Hurd.
- 1:40:40It's the over.
- 1:40:41Ray Hester covering.
- 1:40:44Interesting story today.
- 1:40:46You've heard the Southern California team has problems.
- 1:40:49Try this one on for size.
- 1:40:50We're talking about Johnson and McAllister not playing.
- 1:40:54The Sun officials have no idea where Johnson, McAllister, or the fine offensive lineman Booker Brown are.
- 1:41:01Brown was not injured.
- 1:41:03So, it's a funny business at hand of some sort.
- 1:41:08Booker Brown, James McAllister, and Kermit Johnson nowhere to be found tonight.
- 1:41:13Third and 10 for the Sun, trailing 17 to 11.
- 1:41:16Adams to throw.
- 1:41:17Back he goes.
- 1:41:18Ducks at the 40.
- 1:41:19Fires and it's blocked.
- 1:41:20At the 35 yard line by Keith Denson, running a slam over the middle.
- 1:41:25And he has the first down.
- 1:41:26Middle linebacker Jim Snidecky on the top for the Hawaiian.
- 1:41:31Southern California continues to move.
- 1:41:35You might recall when Southern California first went business, they signed Johnson, McAllister, and Brown.
- 1:41:41And they're a triple sign.
- 1:41:42They really got the team and part the league off to Brown.
- 1:41:46All three of them were sure to be first round Jackson choices in the NFL.
- 1:41:51So, I doubt if we'll be able to find out tonight where they are.
- 1:41:55But it sounds like there's trouble in Sunland.
- 1:41:59First and 10 for the Sun at the Hawaiian 33 yard line.
- 1:42:04Adams on the give to Ralph Nelson off the tackle.
- 1:42:07Flag is thrown.
- 1:42:08Nelson is followed backwards and dropped.
- 1:42:10Gains about two.
- 1:42:12Pickup of about two yards.
- 1:42:14Jim Snidecky, the middle linebacker on the Sun.
- 1:42:16Greg Wojcik on the tackle.
- 1:42:18And Greg Wojcik.
- 1:42:19The illegal procedure is the call against the Sun.
- 1:42:23So that will cost them five yards.
- 1:42:2510-42 remaining here in the third quarter.
- 1:42:28The Hawaiians leading 17 to 11.
- 1:42:31Hawaiians with a touchdown in the opening quarter.
- 1:42:34A touchdown in the field goal in the second quarter.
- 1:42:37And Southern California scoring all of their points in the second quarter.
- 1:42:41Five yards gently against the Sun.
- 1:42:44Back to the Hawaiian 39 where it will be first and 15.
- 1:42:53Hand and wide receiver in place is Dave Williams who's flying with a sprained ankle tonight.
- 1:42:58He and Keith Denson flying to the right side.
- 1:43:02Side end Dave Parks went out about three yards on the left side.
- 1:43:05Hurd and Nelson the running back.
- 1:43:07Adams will throw.
- 1:43:08Back to the pocket.
- 1:43:09Here comes the big rush.
- 1:43:10He dumps it to the short man, Hurd.
- 1:43:12He dumps it on the tackle.
- 1:43:1335 to 30.
- 1:43:1425 down the 26 yard line.
- 1:43:16Hurd's foul on the California.
- 1:43:19Chuck Shetwiler bringing Hurd down.
- 1:43:23Adams was in a lot of trouble as he dumped the ball off to the short man, Greg Hurd.
- 1:43:29Hurd did the rest by himself.
- 1:43:31Looks like a buffalo on the loose as he bounced off tacklers.
- 1:43:35Rambled down to the 21 yard line where it's first and 10.
- 1:43:41Hurd leads the ball game.
- 1:43:47Nelson and Clay Jeffries the running back.
- 1:43:50Harrison Livesey's put to the left side.
- 1:43:53Northern California with the drive going.
- 1:43:55The pitch to Nelson, Livesey to the left side following Jeffries.
- 1:43:58And he is written out of bounds.
- 1:44:00About the line of coverage.
- 1:44:03Good defensive play by Willie Williams.
- 1:44:05The veteran cornerback coming up.
- 1:44:09Adams tonight has completed 10 out of 18.
- 1:44:12174 yards for the Sun.
- 1:44:17Keith Denton checks back in.
- 1:44:19And Ike Harris goes up.
- 1:44:21Harris had to be helped off the field to first down after being hit by Chuck Shetwiler.
- 1:44:289.50 remaining in the third quarter, 17 to 11.
- 1:44:31The Hawaiians on top.
- 1:44:33As Lindsay slips to the left, Keith Denton to the right.
- 1:44:37The cornerbacks drop off to cover those two.
- 1:44:40The flip behind Adams.
- 1:44:42Adams with a deep drop back now rolling to his right being chased.
- 1:44:45Fires and nobody near the football.
- 1:44:48An incomplete pass and no question about that.
- 1:44:51Otto Brown is screaming for intentional rounding.
- 1:44:56Who knows who the intended receiver was.
- 1:44:59Chuck Shetwiler of the Hawaiians is the nearest man to it.
- 1:45:03Adams was under heavy pressure, three men chasing him.
- 1:45:08The crowd will be third down at 10.
- 1:45:10At the 22 yard line of the Hawaiians.
- 1:45:15Greg Wojcik comes in.
- 1:45:17And Rich Watkins, who was in there for that play, goes out.
- 1:45:21At defensive end.
- 1:45:25Third and 10.
- 1:45:29Sun down by six points.
- 1:45:32After failing by 17.
- 1:45:34The movement on the line, the flies go flying.
- 1:45:36Fires the pass, it slips and it falls incomplete.
- 1:45:39But it looks like Levi Stanley, the right defensive tackle, was offside for the Hawaiians.
- 1:45:45Looks like Levi was a little bit too quick in his movement.
- 1:45:48That's the call.
- 1:45:50So that will cost the Hawaiians five yards.
- 1:45:56And that will give Southern California the ball at the 16 yard line of the Hawaiians.
- 1:46:04It will be third and five.
- 1:46:06That sounds very cockly.
- 1:46:12The animated scoreboard flashing go, go, go.
- 1:46:16As Southern California tries to continue this drive.
- 1:46:19Dave Williams back in the game.
- 1:46:21Puts out to the right.
- 1:46:23Icarus flying to the left side.
- 1:46:25Hurd is back in and running back along with Ralph Nelson.
- 1:46:28Adams with a short drop back.
- 1:46:29Here comes the pressure and he's back by East.
- 1:46:32Nobody blocks East and Rod buried Adams back at the 26 yard line.
- 1:46:39Adams throws the football down in his gut, turns to his lineman and says, who missed an assignment?
- 1:46:48Somebody let East through there that time.
- 1:46:50That brings up the fourth and 15 situation.
- 1:46:56The ball at the 25 yard line, Rod Garcia, the field goal kicker,
- 1:47:01will be kicking in the dirt portion of the baseball field.
- 1:47:04Actually kicking from second base.
- 1:47:07It will be a 42 yard field goal attempt.
- 1:47:09The ball will be planted down at the 32 and the goal post 10 yards deep.
- 1:47:13So a 42 yard attempt by Garcia.
- 1:47:16This is the half the spot by Adams.
- 1:47:17The kick is up and it is good.
- 1:47:21A 42 yard field goal that clearly made it over the crossbar.
- 1:47:26And so a timeout on the field with the score.
- 1:47:29The Hawaiians 17 and the Sun 14.
- 1:48:29Rod Garcia set the kick off following a 42 yard field goal.
- 1:48:38A high short end over end kick.
- 1:48:40Richardson will field it at the 15.
- 1:48:42Running laterally to the right side.
- 1:48:44Gets to the 20, has some blocking.
- 1:48:46Gets to the 25, tries to cut back.
- 1:48:48Bounces off a man still on his feet but going nowhere.
- 1:48:50And he drops at the 29 yard line.
- 1:48:53Richardson stood in one spot.
- 1:48:56Cut off about three tacklers before they finally slowed him under.
- 1:49:00A 12 yard return by Richardson.
- 1:49:04So after leading 17 to nothing.
- 1:49:07The Hawaiians now find themselves leading by just 3 points 17 to 14.
- 1:49:12With 9.55 left in the third quarter.
- 1:49:16So let's see if Johnson and Company can go back to work.
- 1:49:20Delaney and Eisenbarger slip to the left.
- 1:49:22Davidson comes up to the running back.
- 1:49:25Johnson on a give to Vinc Clements up the middle.
- 1:49:27And he gets about three yards to clock him to 13.
- 1:49:30We're on the 32 yard line.
- 1:49:33Dave Roller on the offensively.
- 1:49:38When you talk about Caps for the all league team or all WFL team.
- 1:49:43Dave Roller certainly has it.
- 1:49:45There's some serious consideration.
- 1:49:486'2", 272 and his second year from Kentucky.
- 1:49:51Right of the New York Giants and also played up in Canada with a Hamilton Tiger Cat.
- 1:49:55He's become a real favorite here in Anaheim.
- 1:49:58Second and sixth for the Hawaiians.
- 1:50:01Richardson goes in motion to the far side.
- 1:50:03Johnson gives to Al Davis sweeping the left side.
- 1:50:06As Jeff Seavey in front of him cuts back across the 35 up to the 40.
- 1:50:09And he has the first down at the 40 yard line.
- 1:50:13Dave Roller coming across the field to make the tackle.
- 1:50:16Let's pause now for stationary identification.
- 1:50:19This is the Coconut Wild West 40.
- 1:50:24Joe Moore reminding you the University of Hawaii tackles Fresno State Saturday night at 7.05 on KGMB Honolulu.
- 1:50:34Pickup of 10 yards, Clayton Heath checks in at running back.
- 1:50:38It's first and 10 for the Hawaiians at their 42 yard line leading 17 to 14.
- 1:50:43Johnson will throw, play big, back to throw, pump, whoop, being cased, you'll have to run.
- 1:50:48He's in the 40, the 45, and he takes a dive and goes down to 47.
- 1:50:54Brandy looking for a nice soft place to hide. Jim Baker, fill on him.
- 1:50:59Pickup of about 6 yards.
- 1:51:02Johnson is not one of your better running quarterbacks.
- 1:51:07He ran out of necessity that time.
- 1:51:09Ernie O'Leary replaces Al Davis in running back.
- 1:51:14Davis leaves the game with 9 carries for 41 yards.
- 1:51:197 minutes remaining in the third quarter, and the Hawaiians leading by 3.
- 1:51:27Johnson sets things up at the Hawaiians 48 yard line.
- 1:51:32He sends Eisenbacher in motion to the far side.
- 1:51:35They give, it's O'Leary, whoops the tackle, gets him off the field, runs over another man and fights his way down to the 42.
- 1:51:42He's down to the Hawaiians, and that was the Ernie O'Leary of old.
- 1:51:46He's right on the stop, and he lays out a tackle where O'Leary does.
- 1:51:52Jim Baker's slow to get up, and O'Leary leaves the ball game, the job done.
- 1:51:57Al Davis comes in.
- 1:51:59It's today's work for Ernie.
- 1:52:04First down at 10 for the Hawaiians, it's a 7-42.
- 1:52:07Eisenbacher left and Delaney right.
- 1:52:09Johnson back into the pocket, steps up, looks long, fires, Delaney fell down the fast interceptor.
- 1:52:16And no, now they say incomplete pass.
- 1:52:19Delaney, the attendant receiver, tried to make a cut and fell down, and it looked like Jim Bowman nearly picked it off, but he couldn't hang on to the football.
- 1:52:31Or Jim Bright that was.
- 1:52:34So it'll be second down at 10 for the Hawaiians, it's a 7-42.
- 1:52:40Johnson now is in on 8 of 17 passes for 94 yards.
- 1:52:48They have double wide receivers to the left, then Delaney and Richardson.
- 1:52:53Johnson, to give to Clayton, he's up the middle, has some running room, and gets inside the 35 to about the 33.
- 1:53:00He's popping through a hole.
- 1:53:02Cleveland's Bann, the left linebacker on this stop.
- 1:53:05Hawaiians have had pretty good success running straight up the gut against the Sun.
- 1:53:10They've got some good blockers up there with Cadeel, Seavey, and Wilbur, as well as Johnson and Richardson.
- 1:53:19Third down and a long one yard for the Hawaiians, the Sun 33.
- 1:53:24A man wide to each side, and Johnson steps up.
- 1:53:27Brandy takes the snap, he'll throw a fire for Eisenbarger, John has a first down with room to spare, as he dances out of the 28 guideline.
- 1:53:36Eisenbarger running a sideline pattern in front of rookie Derwin Keaton.
- 1:53:42Keaton played with Gary Backus of the Hawaiians at Oklahoma, and Wolfs were all big eight selections.
- 1:53:51Another member of that team, Lucius Sellman, is also in the playoffs.
- 1:53:54He plays with the Memphis Southman, defensive lineman.
- 1:53:57First and 10 for the Hawaiians at the Sun 28, Hawaiians leading 17 to 14.
- 1:54:02Five and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:54:05From Anaheim Stadium, Johnson back straight into the pocket, look, pump, fire, look, caught by Delaney for a first down.
- 1:54:12And he's wrestled down to 17 yard line.
- 1:54:15Gene Howard on the tackle.
- 1:54:19Johnson is an incredible passer when he's hot, that's the old saying, when you're hot you're hot, when you're not you're not.
- 1:54:26But when Johnson gets on one of those freaks and starts working the sidelines, the right side, the left side, back to the right side, he'll pick you apart.
- 1:54:34That's what he's doing right now.
- 1:54:36First and 10 for the Hawaiians at the Sun 14.
- 1:54:39Johnson now is in a 10 of 19 for 112 yards.
- 1:54:44They keep Delaney in tight on the right side, send Richardson to the left.
- 1:54:48They give up the middle, it's to Al Davis.
- 1:54:51He gets to about the 13 or 14 before Charles C. Jornet brings him down, pick up of two yards.
- 1:55:01Richardson goes out, John Eisenberger comes in.
- 1:55:04Effectively, John Hoffman and Neil Carrot at the end.
- 1:55:08Charles C. Jornet and Dave Roller at the tackle.
- 1:55:11Jim Baker, Eric Patton, and Cleveland banned the linebackers.
- 1:55:14Jack Connors and Rudy Redmond at the corners, they're with Keaton and Jim Brighter at the safety.
- 1:55:19Second and eight for the Hawaiians at the Sun 13 yard line.
- 1:55:23Eisenberger starts in motion at the near side.
- 1:55:25Johnson backpedals, fire, right open.
- 1:55:29Down at the five yard line at the side end, John Chelsea.
- 1:55:33And John nearly fights his way into the end zone.
- 1:55:36Chelsea was the short receiver as they sent Eisenberger and Delaney long.
- 1:55:42Chelsea running a little comeback batter, took the grab at the,
- 1:55:45or took the catch at the five, it took it down to about the two, actually inside the two, the one and a half.
- 1:55:51Chelsea having a big night with five receptions for 67 yards.
- 1:55:56Seventeen to 14, the Hawaiians leading and threatening to score again with 3.39 left in the third quarter.
- 1:56:02Richardson slips to the right.
- 1:56:06Johnson with a long count and a mix up in the backfield.
- 1:56:09Jeff Sevey, a pulling guard, pulled about two seconds too soon and ran right over Randy Johnson.
- 1:56:15It'll be a legal procedure against the Hawaiians.
- 1:56:20Oh brother.
- 1:56:22Sevey ran right into Johnson.
- 1:56:24Jeff was the guard on the left side.
- 1:56:27And he jumped the gun.
- 1:56:29Now they're going to take Sevey out of there and bring in Richard Cheek, who brings with him a play.
- 1:56:36The penalty, took the Hawaiians back at the seven yard line.
- 1:56:40It'll be first and goal.
- 1:56:43Costly mistake by the rookie.
- 1:56:47Delaney slips out to the right side and now moves in tight.
- 1:56:51Richardson is flank left.
- 1:56:54Long count by Johnson.
- 1:56:55Brady Richardson goes in motion.
- 1:56:57Johnson to give to Al Davis, fights his way inside the five, down to about the two and a half.
- 1:57:03Davis following the blocking of Richard Cheek and Corny Johnson.
- 1:57:08Deidre Day and Ruler in on the stop.
- 1:57:13John Eisenbarger comes in.
- 1:57:16And they take out the tight end, John Kelsey.
- 1:57:22Second and goal to go.
- 1:57:25See if Richardson is. I don't believe the Hawaiians have a tight end in there right now.
- 1:57:32They are going.
- 1:57:34Well, Richardson will move to tight end.
- 1:57:37Eisenbarger splits to the right and comes in motion.
- 1:57:41Johnson to give to Al Davis, followed by Deidre.
- 1:57:43Clements fights down near the end zone.
- 1:57:45He is in for a touchdown.
- 1:57:47Davis, touchdown for the Hawaiians.
- 1:57:51That is 24 to 14.
- 1:57:55The score came with 2-41 remaining by third quarter.
- 1:57:59Al Davis, second touchdown of the night.
- 1:58:02He had one in the first quarter.
- 1:58:06This time Al rambles over from about two and a half yards out, to touchdown.
- 1:58:12Tonight he has 13 carries for 50 yards, and a pair of touchdowns.
- 1:58:16Not a bad evening so far.
- 1:58:18Weese comes in at quarterback on the action point attempt.
- 1:58:22Long count by Weese.
- 1:58:26Eisenbarger goes in motion.
- 1:58:28He is looking to his right, looking to run.
- 1:58:30No doubt about it, he tries to get to the corner.
- 1:58:32He is in for the action point.
- 1:58:35So a timeout on the field, with the score, the Hawaiians 25 and the Sun 14.

- 1:59:37Super KB, KB, go to the south!
- 1:59:42RA Coppies ready to kick off as the Hawaiians lead 25 to 14.
- 1:59:47Eric Johnson and Keith Denson are deep for the Sun.
- 1:59:51Coppies has a low line drive kick. Denson is bumbled by Denson at the 20.
- 1:59:56Picked up the 22, up to the 25, to the 30, 35.
- 1:59:59He gets to the right sideline and again goes out of bounds.
- 2:00:04Ran out of bounds at the 44-yard line.
- 2:00:07For the second time tonight, Denson did not turn up field to try to challenge any of the tacklers.
- 2:00:11When he saw that he was in trouble, he simply went out of bounds.
- 2:00:14A 22-yard return.
- 2:00:18A top-coring drive by the Hawaiians, conserved 6 minutes and 14 seconds.
- 2:00:23As they hate up most of the third quarter, 232 remaining in the quarter.
- 2:00:30Both starting quarterbacks have gone all the way. Tony Adams for the Sun.
- 2:00:35Randy Johnson for the Hawaiians.
- 2:00:37Lindsay and Harris split to the left.
- 2:00:40Adams back to the road, steps up, looks, fires over the middle, caught by Lindsay,
- 2:00:44and down the 44-yard line.
- 2:00:49Inside Decky.
- 2:00:52Decky, Lindsay following a 15-yard pick-up.
- 2:00:55Good for a first down.
- 2:00:57Adams comes right back.
- 2:00:59Decky comes out of Harris, goes out a wide receiver.
- 2:01:05Well, I mentioned at the beginning of the broadcast that we'd be seeing a lot of passing tonight.
- 2:01:09The two quarterbacks certainly haven't disappointed us.
- 2:01:121-10 for the Sun at the Hawaiian 42.
- 2:01:15Double-wide receivers to the left in Lindsay and Denton.
- 2:01:18Adams gives to Ralph Nelson, following Greg Hurd over left tackle,
- 2:01:22gets across to 35 and stumbles and goes down to 32.
- 2:01:27Nine-yard pick-up, Willie Williams on the stop.
- 2:01:30Couple of times tonight.
- 2:01:32Looks like Nelson is going to pick up sizable yardage.
- 2:01:37Stumbles as he broke into clear.
- 2:01:42Now bring the Dickerod out for a measurement.
- 2:01:44Nelson is going to be a fine running back before his career has been,
- 2:01:47and keep in mind he's just 20 years of age.
- 2:01:50What a future he's got.
- 2:01:52You have to wonder how some college didn't pick him up.
- 2:01:55He did not play college football, nor did Willie Spencer of Memphis Southland,
- 2:01:59the leading scorer in the league.
- 2:02:02Nelson with 13 carries tonight for 29 yards.
- 2:02:07Spencer played in football country, Masellan, Ohio,
- 2:02:11and did not go on to college.
- 2:02:15I can't believe this.
- 2:02:16A lot of the Sun fans are leaving.
- 2:02:19We're in the third quarter with a minute 39 left,
- 2:02:22and they're down by just 11 points.
- 2:02:24A lot of the fans are leaving.
- 2:02:25They're going for the Xs.
- 2:02:28Second down, one for the Sun.
- 2:02:31Adams takes a snap, gets a hurt,
- 2:02:34shoots down the counting clock, and gets across to 30 down to the 27.
- 2:02:38He has the first down.
- 2:02:40This is almost unbelievable.
- 2:02:44Well, it looks like they're not actually leaving.
- 2:02:46It's raining.
- 2:02:47They're hiding from the rain.
- 2:02:51This is nothing compared to the rain in Hawaii.
- 2:02:57This is mere sprinkle, a bit of winter mist.
- 2:03:05First is Devin for the Sun at the Hawaiian 28-yard line,
- 2:03:0852 seconds left in the third quarter.
- 2:03:10Denson's foot to the left.
- 2:03:12Adams to play fake.
- 2:03:13Back to the roll.
- 2:03:14Back to the rolling left.
- 2:03:15Looking fast for Denson, incomplete, down to the 5-yard line.
- 2:03:18And Denson was well covered by Willie Williams and Chuck Shedwiler,
- 2:03:22a couple of former NFLers.
- 2:03:24Shedwiler who played for the Packers, the Chargers, the Cardinals,
- 2:03:28and Williams who spent 10 years with the New York Giants.
- 2:03:3243 seconds left in the third quarter, the Hawaiians leading 25 to 14.
- 2:03:40You almost have to squint to see the rain.
- 2:03:42That's how light it is.
- 2:03:43But DeSands is stirring for cover as if it was a downpour.
- 2:03:50The Southern Californians, I don't know.
- 2:03:54Second down, Ted for the Sun.
- 2:03:56Adams gets to the second man through Nelson, and he runs into Sydecky,
- 2:04:00and then everybody jumps on the bar.
- 2:04:03Adrian Young was warned by his teammates.
- 2:04:06Young came running from about 10 yards away and tried to jump on the pile,
- 2:04:10and some of his teammates are warning him that that might count as 15 yards for piling on.
- 2:04:16No gain on the play at third and 10.
- 2:04:20Twenty seconds left in the quarter.
- 2:04:21That may be the final play.
- 2:04:24Hawaiians out by 11.
- 2:04:26Their biggest lead tonight was 17 points.
- 2:04:29Terry Lizzie slips to the right side.
- 2:04:32Keith Denson to the left.
- 2:04:34The back shift out of the eye, Hurd and Nelson.
- 2:04:37Adams will throw.
- 2:04:38Drops straight back.
- 2:04:39Look, they're coming.
- 2:04:40He is back.
- 2:04:41He'll come around the neck and spin him down at the 41-yard line.
- 2:04:46See who gets up off the pile.
- 2:04:49Levi Stanley backing Adams, and there's the guns down at the end of the third quarter.
- 2:04:53What's his score?
- 2:04:54The Hawaiians 25 and the Sun 14.
- 2:05:00He starts the fourth quarter of play with Southern California putting.
- 2:05:03Norm Haneland will be standing at his 47-yard line.
- 2:05:08William's back deep for the Hawaiians waiting at the 10.
- 2:05:12Haneland takes a wobbly snap and puts it up.
- 2:05:14Going for the left corner, Mosley fakes a runback,
- 2:05:17lets the ball roll over his head into the end zone for a touchback.
- 2:05:21Hawaiians have a rule on that end that if the ball is going to hit inside the 10,
- 2:05:26then let it go.
- 2:05:28Let it roll into the end zone.
- 2:05:30Don't fake a runback.
- 2:05:34So it's first and 10 for the Hawaiians.
- 2:05:35It's their 20-yard line. They lead 25 to 14.
- 2:05:39Al Davis with two touchdown runs tonight.
- 2:05:44Randy Johnson having another big night in the passing department.
- 2:05:48On the other hand, Tony Adams has been sacked four times for a total of 44 yards tonight.
- 2:05:54The front four has really gotten to him.
- 2:06:01Johnson sends Eisenbarger in motion.
- 2:06:04The idea of up the middle is to 30-0 Lurie.
- 2:06:08And he ran into John Wilbur, one of his blockers, as he was brought down to 22.
- 2:06:13The attendance tonight, state attendance, 11,430.
- 2:06:19And I have to say that's a little bit disappointing as far as Southern California people are concerned.
- 2:06:2511,430.
- 2:06:27Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come.
- 2:06:3011,430.
- 2:06:34Richardson and Delaney have slipped to the left side.
- 2:06:38O'Leary and Clements are the running backs.
- 2:06:40Johnson gives to Vin Clements, busting up the middle, following the block of Jim Cadeel.
- 2:06:44And he fights his way down to the 25-yard line.
- 2:06:50And evaluating that attendance figure, you have to keep in mind that the league and this team has had the last week or so.
- 2:06:57They didn't even know if there would be a ball game.
- 2:07:00Or for sure where it would be.
- 2:07:02They have had less than a week to try to sell tickets.
- 2:07:05And a lot of the newspapers here in the Los Angeles area were saying that the game was on Wednesday night and not tonight, Thursday night.
- 2:07:12So they've had problems.
- 2:07:15Third down, five for the Hawaiians.
- 2:07:17And Johnson goes back to throw.
- 2:07:18Here comes the rush.
- 2:07:19He fires and it's caught by the tight end, John Kelsey, running a plan over the middle.
- 2:07:23And he gets down to the 38-yard line where Jim Bright brings him down.
- 2:07:28Kelsey coming up with another big catch.
- 2:07:31And again the rush was on that time.
- 2:07:37That gives the Hawaiians a first down.
- 2:07:40Kelsey with six receptions tonight for 81 yards.
- 2:07:44Normally you count on your tight end versus a lot of blocking and two or three receptions.
- 2:07:49But John is getting free tonight.
- 2:07:5213 minutes remaining in the game, 25-14 Hawaiians.
- 2:07:57Johnson gives to Clayton Heath sweeping the left side off to 40.
- 2:08:01And he is chased out of bounds at the 44-yard line.
- 2:08:05Gene Howard running him out.
- 2:08:09Five-yard pick-up for Heath, the rookie from Wake Forest.
- 2:08:14The right-gettings has used all the Derrick Williams tonight in running back.
- 2:08:18So Larry Davis, Clements, and Heath have all played.
- 2:08:22Heath worked like quite a prospect.
- 2:08:24He was caught by the Chicago Fire early in the year.
- 2:08:27Has not played much except for special teams with the Hawaiians, but has shown sparks of brilliance.
- 2:08:35Had a touchdown run last week of some 20 yards against Portland.
- 2:08:39Quite an effort by Clayton.
- 2:08:41They give up the middle as to Heath again and he's stacked up at the 45.
- 2:08:45He runs into the center of that defensive line, 275 Dave Roller and 275 Charles Dijerne.
- 2:08:54Relatively young front four for Southern California.
- 2:08:57Skaren and Dijerne are rookies, lower than his second year.
- 2:09:01And John Thompson is a five-year veteran.
- 2:09:04Third down four for the Hawaiians at their 45.
- 2:09:08The clock rolling with 12.25 remaining.
- 2:09:11Delaney splits to the left, Eisenbarger to the right.
- 2:09:14Johnson fires and is caught by Delaney trying to shake free of a tackler and he can't do it.
- 2:09:21Delaney made the catch and it's good for no gain or perhaps a yard.
- 2:09:28Gene Howard on the stop.
- 2:09:30That'll bring us fourth down and the Hawaiians will have to kick it all away.
- 2:09:38Sean Bans applauding the defensive members of their team.
- 2:09:42Although Southern California is trailing by 11, this is a very explosive team as the Hawaiians found out in the first half.
- 2:09:48They can come from behind and beat you with a big play.
- 2:09:52With that, it's a quarterback. They're always capable of throwing that long ball.
- 2:09:56Backus will punch Denson in single safety at the sun 17.
- 2:10:02Backus will be kicking from his 31-yard line.
- 2:10:05Levi Stanley in the center of the ball.
- 2:10:07Backus takes it.
- 2:10:09A wobbly spiral that hangs up. Denson will field it at the 18.
- 2:10:13Running laterally, giving ground, bounces off a tackler.
- 2:10:16He's to the 15, the 20, the 25, up to the 30 and he runs out of bounds at the 31-yard line.
- 2:10:23She's out by Dave Ulrich.
- 2:10:2713 yards returned by Denson following a 35-yard punch by Gary Backus.
- 2:10:32Now a timeout on the field with the score, the Hawaiians 25 and the Sun 14.
- 2:10:38The time is ripe if you're the type and this ain't no hype.

- 2:11:39First and 10th for the Sun at their 30-yard line, trailing 25 to 14 with 11-16 remaining in the ballgame.
- 2:11:46And Adams will have to play catch-up football.
- 2:11:49He gives to Greg Heard, busting off right tackle, and he's wrestled down by Adrian Young.
- 2:11:55That's the 34-yard line.
- 2:11:58And the Sun player is down. That is Tony Adams throwing out a dust and holding his ankle.
- 2:12:05He's got one hand on his ankle and one on his knee. He is hurt.
- 2:12:09So the officials will take a timeout.
- 2:12:12Timeout on the field with the score, the Hawaiians 25 and the Sun 14.
- 2:12:17Just wait till you fly out, primo, while you won't believe the taste.
- 2:12:22It's a taste that'll make Hawaii proud.

- 2:13:13Brother, you aren't tasting it till you're tasting primo beer.
- 2:13:19Bill Proctor back at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California,
- 2:13:23with 10.54 remaining in the game and the Hawaiians leading the Sun 25 to 14.
- 2:13:28Gary Valbuena, a rookie from Tennessee, has replaced the injured Tony Adams, the quarterback.
- 2:13:32Valbuena will throw, or try to throw, but Lev Burnham sacks him.
- 2:13:39Burnham gives him a playful tap on the behind.
- 2:13:44Levi Stanley also in there, six yard loss on the play.
- 2:13:51So a rude welcome extended to Gary Valbuena as Adams comes off the field.
- 2:13:56Looks like he had an ankle injury.
- 2:13:59And Valbuena, 6'3, 206, the rookie from Tennessee is in there.
- 2:14:04It'll be third down and 10 down for the Sun, with 10 down remaining in the game.
- 2:14:11The Sun is leading faster now on the sideline.
- 2:14:15Lindsey flips to the right, Ike is to the left.
- 2:14:19Jefferies and Nelson are the running backs behind Gary Valbuena.
- 2:14:24Valbuena to throw.
- 2:14:25Here comes a rush again.
- 2:14:27He fires in a hurry and it's picked off.
- 2:14:29Intercepted by Otto Brown.
- 2:14:31Brown at the 25 and chopped down at the Sun 24 yard line.
- 2:14:35Valbuena had to hurry that pass.
- 2:14:38A rush up front for Lev Burnham, Otto Brown intercepted and brought him back 16 yards to the Sun 24.
- 2:14:47And with that intersection a lot of the Sun routers start to head for the exit.
- 2:14:53Most of those that got up earlier weren't leaving.
- 2:14:56They were simply trying to find a dry spot here at Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:15:00There are many of those tonight.
- 2:15:05Johnson 10 for the Hawaiian to the Sun 24.
- 2:15:09Delaney splits to the left.
- 2:15:11Eisenbarger to the right.
- 2:15:14O'Leary and Clements are running back.
- 2:15:16Johnson rolls right by it.
- 2:15:17Eisenbarger has it.
- 2:15:18He's in for a touchdown.
- 2:15:20A great catch by Eisenbarger.
- 2:15:23But we have a flag on the play.
- 2:15:27Johnson lost the ball in a corner pattern for Eisenbarger.
- 2:15:31A fast runner-up made the catch and the touchdown will not count.
- 2:15:35A holding penalty against the Hawaiian.
- 2:15:40So a fine reception by Eisenbarger for the parent touchdown is wiped out by a holding penalty.
- 2:15:47That will cost them 10 yards.
- 2:15:51It will also cost them 7 points.
- 2:15:55The penalty steps off to the Sun 35.
- 2:15:59The first to stand 20.
- 2:16:01940 left in the game.
- 2:16:03The Hawaiians leading 25 to 14.
- 2:16:06It was 17 to 11 in favor of the Hawaiians at halftime.
- 2:16:10This Johnson goes back to the well.
- 2:16:13Delaney left.
- 2:16:14Eisenbarger right.
- 2:16:15O'Leary moves over a couple of steps behind Johnson.
- 2:16:18Here comes the rush in the linemen.
- 2:16:20Ruler barks in to say hello to Randy Johnson and the flags will fly.
- 2:16:27Ruler slides against the Sun.
- 2:16:30So they go 5 yards the other way.
- 2:16:33Ruler and Johnson were teammates with the New York Giants.
- 2:16:37You might recall those of you who saw the last meeting between the teams at Honolulu Stadium.
- 2:16:41Ruler blindsided Randy Johnson in that ball game and I wasn't sure Randy would get up.
- 2:16:47I asked Randy about that and he said, well, Dave Ruler told me before the ball game that he was going to stop by and say hello.
- 2:16:56They fake a blip to give it to Heath.
- 2:16:59Heath is in trouble.
- 2:17:00He dropped for a lot.
- 2:17:02Not only did they fake the blips, they came with the blips.
- 2:17:05Now Heath ran right into it as he was knocked down to 34 yard line, a loss of three.
- 2:17:12Deidre Day, Ruler and Baker all in on the stop.
- 2:17:18Substitution on defense.
- 2:17:20Cleveland Band comes in replacing Jim Buckman.
- 2:17:24Band a rookie from Oklahoma State.
- 2:17:26Second and 19 for the Hawaiians at the Sun 33.
- 2:17:30Nine minutes left in the game.
- 2:17:32Johnson will go to the air.
- 2:17:34Back he goes.
- 2:17:35Fire's on for Kelsey.
- 2:17:36And Kelsey was open but a great play by Gene Howard who sat in front of Kelsey and tipped the ball away at the 13 yard line.
- 2:17:43That pass, that touchdown written all over it as Kelsey was open when Howard reached out and flicked it away.
- 2:17:52Howard, a six year veteran from Langston University, played with the Saints and the Rams in the NFL.
- 2:18:00It'll be third and 19.
- 2:18:03The ball at the Sun 33.
- 2:18:09Heisenberger splits to the left, picked up by Rudy Redmond.
- 2:18:14Kim Berlany to the right, picked up by Jim Bullman.
- 2:18:17Heisenberger starts at most of the near side.
- 2:18:20And he's ruffled down by Roller back at the 39.
- 2:18:24Roller, possibly interference, and drops to O'Leary for a loss of about five yards.
- 2:18:33Good quickness by Roller.
- 2:18:38You can see signs around the stadium.
- 2:18:40Rockham Roller and go get him Dave.
- 2:18:44Popular figure here in Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:18:47Fourth and 25 for the Hawaiians, Bakus will punt.
- 2:18:52Keith Denson waiting for it at the 10 yard line.
- 2:18:55Bakus will try a cop and corner shot as he stands with his 45.
- 2:18:59Dave Ulrich, the blocker in front of him.
- 2:19:01Bakus takes the snap, hangs it up going for the left corner.
- 2:19:05Denson moves over to field it.
- 2:19:07The ball hits and rolls out of bounds at the 15 yard line.
- 2:19:12With 9.13 heading in the quarter.
- 2:19:1623 yard punt by Bakus.
- 2:19:20And now a timeout on the field with the score, the Hawaiians 25 and the Sun 14.
- 2:19:27Now at J.B.'s discotheque in the colony surface, it's Southern Flavor.
- 2:19:33Southern Flavor, a hot-eat-piece group, takes the stage nightly except Wednesday,
- 2:19:37playing the finest dance music in Honolulu.
- 2:19:39Southern Flavor gets things moving at nine.
- 2:19:42It plays on through to closing at J.B.'s to drop by any time.
- 2:19:46And taste, Southern Flavor, now at J.B.'s discotheque in the colony surface.
- 2:19:52J.B., Hawaiians' first real discotheque.
- 2:19:56For your Thanksgiving dinner, treat your family to a USDA Grade A North-West 10 Turkey
- 2:20:10with an automatic tinder timer at 55 cents a pound.
- 2:20:13And buy our 48 ounce Springfield salad oil at a low $1.99.
- 2:20:18Go to the market where shopping is not pleasure.
- 2:20:22Go!
- 2:20:28Southern California will start to work first to 10 from their own 17 yard line.
- 2:20:33Gary Valbuena at quarterback having replaced the injured Tony Adams.
- 2:20:36Clay Jeffries and Ralph Nelson at the running back, set in the eye.
- 2:20:41Valbuena plays back to throw, fires the bleach to Lindsay, and he has the first down.
- 2:20:46The 34 yard line.
- 2:20:48Chuck Detweiler making the stop.
- 2:20:51He gave Lindsay a good shot, but Terry hung on.
- 2:20:55A wrong yard pick up.
- 2:20:57To the 34 yard line of Southern California.
- 2:21:01And Valbuena can throw that football. He's a big, strong kid.
- 2:21:06Hasn't played too much.
- 2:21:08Only a tenth of 75 passes coming into this game.
- 2:21:11Cleaning 39 for 577 yards.
- 2:21:14Throwing for six touchdowns.
- 2:21:17First to 10 for the Sun. Icarus goes in motion to the far side.
- 2:21:21Otto Brown follows him to give it to Jeffries. Off-right tackle and Ron East drags it down.
- 2:21:26After a gain of just a yard.
- 2:21:28Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:21:30This is the Coconut Wireless Sports Network.
- 2:21:33KGMB, 14.
- 2:21:35Joe Moore reminding you the University of Hawaii tackles Fresno State Saturday night at 7.05 on KGMB Honolulu.
- 2:21:42Super KGMB.
- 2:21:44Seven minutes nine seconds remaining in the game and the Hawaiians leading 25 to 14.
- 2:21:49At first half it appeared that they would run wild in this ball game as they led 17 to nothing.
- 2:21:55But the Sun made it 17 to 11 and a half times.
- 2:21:59Long count by Val Buena.
- 2:22:02Back he goes.
- 2:22:03Shuts up. Pumped. Worked. Fire. Goal.
- 2:22:05And it is incomplete.
- 2:22:08Down at the 30 yard line of the Hawaiians.
- 2:22:11Willie Williams and Keith Denson running a foot race but the pass was overthrown.
- 2:22:16So there you have quite a contrast.
- 2:22:21The rookie Denson against the 10-year veteran Willie Williams.
- 2:22:24Williams was released by the New York Giants at the beginning of this year and if you talk to people around
- 2:22:33throw football they'll tell you that it wasn't because Willie was getting older, he's 31,
- 2:22:38because his legs were going, it was because of his high salary.
- 2:22:42He was one of the highest paid defensive backs in the National Football League.
- 2:22:47He's still got plenty of football left.
- 2:22:50Third down nine for the Sun at their 34 yard line.
- 2:22:54Val Buena plays a goal left, reverses, rolls right, fires.
- 2:22:58Screen pass to Nelson. Nelson at the 45, up to the 40, run out of bounds.
- 2:23:04At the 49 yard line. Good for a first down.
- 2:23:08Val Buena started to move to the left side.
- 2:23:11This turnaround rolled to the right and by then the screen was set up.
- 2:23:15Ralph Nelson taking it against Nidecki breaking it down.
- 2:23:20Ball Tyler and Kevin Grady leading the way for Nelson.
- 2:23:25First and 10 for the Sun.
- 2:23:28They spot the ball at the 47 yard line of the Sun.
- 2:23:33Nelson got a little further than that.
- 2:23:366.37 left in the game and the clock is not moving.
- 2:23:44I assume Nelson was out of bounds. Val Buena dropped straight back, fires in and out of the hands of Denson.
- 2:23:52Denson's flanning over the middle and he ripped his chin strap away at this cut.
- 2:23:59He talked to wide receivers. They'll tell you the true test of a floor receiver is his ability to catch the ball over the middle.
- 2:24:07Those linebackers, defensive backs closing in on him.
- 2:24:12At that time Denson did not come up with a catch.
- 2:24:16Kim Delaney is the master of making catches like that. Heavy traffic going in over the middle where he's going to take those severe licks.
- 2:24:24Second down, 10 for the Sun.
- 2:24:27At their 47, Val Buena will go to the air again.
- 2:24:30Backed up, being chased, fires on the run, dipped up in the air and is intercepted.
- 2:24:35It's picked off by Adrian Young trying to stay in bounds, still going. Down to the 20, the 15 and he's down to the 13 yard line.
- 2:24:43It looked like Young had stepped out of bounds at about the 30.
- 2:24:48And the Sun players gave up on him and Adrian took it all the way down to the 13.
- 2:24:53Let's see if they bring it back.
- 2:24:57The run back was 41 yards by Adrian Young.
- 2:25:01Gary Val Buena is the quarterback and the last man who had a shot at Adrian made the tackle.
- 2:25:06Strange plays they gave up on Young.
- 2:25:10He was trying to stay in bounds and was waving one arm to try to balance himself.
- 2:25:16Looks like a high wire act.
- 2:25:18But he stayed in and took it down to the 13.
- 2:25:21First and 10 for the Hawaiian.
- 2:25:24See if Johnson can strike quickly.
- 2:25:27Give to O'Leary following John Wilbur over the left side and he gets down to about the 11.
- 2:25:34Dave Ruler wrestles it down.
- 2:25:38Now the fan again strikes the deep with 6.05 left.
- 2:25:46Hawaiians on top by 11 for the running to bang one over again.
- 2:25:50The defense tonight has created a lot of opportunities for the Hawaiian.
- 2:25:54Naidecky with an interception to shut up one touchdown and Adrian Young's stuff leading to this drive.
- 2:26:01Delaney's foot to the right.
- 2:26:05Richardson to the left and Grady goes in motion.
- 2:26:08The give is to O'Leary flipping left side.
- 2:26:10Schaik and Wilbur on the front.
- 2:26:12And O'Leary gets inside the 10 and the 8 before he's knocked down.
- 2:26:16Jim Bright, a rookie from UCLA.
- 2:26:21Again, I can't help but wonder where James McAllister, Kermit Johnson, and Booker Brown are tonight.
- 2:26:33We're going to keep layers for Southern California.
- 2:26:36Not showing up.
- 2:26:39We'll try to investigate.
- 2:26:42We'll call Sherlock Holmes in if we have to to find out what's happening.
- 2:26:50The water says they aren't being paid.
- 2:26:51That will be the answer.
- 2:26:52Johnson, rock one, caught by Eisenbarger in the right corner of the end zone.
- 2:26:56Eisenbarger now gets into a fight with Jim Bowman.
- 2:27:00They're plugging it out.
- 2:27:01Here come players.
- 2:27:03And the officials are trying to separate.
- 2:27:04Jim Bowman is on the back of Eisenbarger.
- 2:27:07O'Leary trying to pull Bowman off.
- 2:27:09Now Bob Richards, the big lineman, comes in.
- 2:27:11Here come the other players.
- 2:27:12Now a small-scale squad fest in the right corner of the end zone.
- 2:27:16Jeff Seamey jumps into it.
- 2:27:18And they are really going at it.
- 2:27:20Here come the rest of the feds.
- 2:27:21They're plugging it out.
- 2:27:23And I don't know who can stop this one.
- 2:27:26What the players themselves do.
- 2:27:28About three or four fights breaking out.
- 2:27:30They pull Bowman away.
- 2:27:32There's still a pile up down.
- 2:27:34John Wolbert gets up off the pile.
- 2:27:37Mike Giddings is over there.
- 2:27:41And I'll tell you, they were really going at it for a minute or two.
- 2:27:44Levi Stanley comes over and sets up things for Dave Roller of Southern California.
- 2:27:49Roller lost his helmet in this couple.
- 2:27:52They pick it up and give it back to him.
- 2:27:54Both benches empty.
- 2:27:59And it looked like they were going to have a pure, thick crawl for a minute or two.
- 2:28:05The touchdown makes it 32 to 14.
- 2:28:09Eisenbarger made the catch.
- 2:28:11And Bowman kind of pinned him down after making the tackle.
- 2:28:15And Eisenbarger didn't like that.
- 2:28:17So those two started in.
- 2:28:19And everybody else joined in the fight.
- 2:28:2332 to 14.
- 2:28:24The Hawaiians on top.
- 2:28:25His order is restored.
- 2:28:28Players returning to both benches.
- 2:28:344.53 left in the game.
- 2:28:36And the Hawaiians will try the action point in the two-and-a-half-yard line.
- 2:28:40And the ball comes in at quarterback.
- 2:28:46What a wild fight breaking out in the right corner of the end zone.
- 2:28:49If those players did not restore order themselves, I'm not sure anyone could have stopped that fight.
- 2:28:55You get 80 football players going at it full tilt.
- 2:28:58Take an army to stop them.
- 2:29:01The ball is at two-and-a-half for the action point attempt.
- 2:29:05As the Hawaiians seem to have this one stored up, but they're still 4.53 left.
- 2:29:11You can never count a team like the Sun out.
- 2:29:15Delaney and Eisenbarger splits to the left.
- 2:29:17And Weese waits for the pass.
- 2:29:20Long count.
- 2:29:21Eisenbarger goes in motion.
- 2:29:23Weese, Delaney, is left following the block of TV.
- 2:29:25Fires!
- 2:29:26And a diving catch.
- 2:29:28Delaney made the catch, but he was out of the end zone, out of the action point trail.
- 2:29:33Time out on the field with the score.
- 2:29:35The Hawaiians, 32, and the Sun, 14.
- 2:29:38Homeowners, how would you like to expand the facilities of your home perhaps out of the line?
- 2:29:43Another bedroom or a carport for that new car.
- 2:29:45There is an easy economical way.
- 2:29:47Get in touch with a post from Low Budget Homes, Inc.
- 2:29:50Low Budget Homes is the Hawaiian, Ina firm with 20 years of experience in additions, alterations in modular home construction.
- 2:29:57They'll do residential, industrial, and commercial building jobs.
- 2:30:00So give a call to Low Budget Homes, 2828 Pa'a Street, full 833-3031.
- 2:30:06Come out to Fisher Hawaii, next to Gibson, a poona poona Pa'a Street store.
- 2:30:11Getting ripped off on office furniture and supplies, waiting for mainland back orders.
- 2:30:14Well, my friend, Fisher Hawaii undersells their competitors by 20, 30, 40, sometimes 50 percent.
- 2:30:19And they have $750,000 worth of merchandise in stock right now.
- 2:30:22Hey, hey, that's merchandise, moving as a bike.
- 2:30:25Down we go, we all day off the bike, you put our good in now, Fisher Hawaii 40-box,
- 2:30:305, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5.
- 2:30:40It's a great copy to kick off of the goal line.
- 2:30:43He's out to the 10, the 15, and knocked down at the 18-yard line.
- 2:30:47And Coppich, although he booted that ball to the end line, did not kick the ball for 40
- 2:30:54because there was a 15-yard penalty against Southern California, a personal foul following that fight.
- 2:31:0118-yard return by Denson.
- 2:31:06So Southern California was hit with a personal foul penalty following that melee in the endzone.
- 2:31:16First and sad for the Sun, at their 19-yard by an April 32 to 14, we have 4.43 left in the game.
- 2:31:23And it looks like the Hawaiians have this one in the bag.
- 2:31:26Valbuena still in there at quarterback, replacing Adams who was injured earlier.
- 2:31:30Valbuena is going to be sacked!
- 2:31:32He did not have time to set up.
- 2:31:34It was buried in the 8-yard line by Greg Wojcik and Levi Stanley.
- 2:31:3810-yard loss, and Levi helps Valbuena to his feet.
- 2:31:42And Levi Stanley off the ball.
- 2:31:45Second and one, on the nine.
- 2:31:50And Southern California quarterbacks tonight have been sacked five times for 54 yards.
- 2:31:57They got to Tony Adams six times the last meeting between these two clubs.
- 2:32:03Adams was dumped six times by Ford the last week, so these Sun quarterbacks have taken a beating in the last couple weeks.
- 2:32:10Second down 20 for the Sun at their own nine-yard line.
- 2:32:15Jeffries and Nelson, they're running back.
- 2:32:19Valbuena with a long count.
- 2:32:21Wrong way to give to Nelson, and he's going nowhere.
- 2:32:24And the Hawaiians diagnose it perfectly, and they bring Nelson down at the three.
- 2:32:31A flag on the play, and the Hawaiians help Nelson to his feet.
- 2:32:36Offside against the Hawaiians is the call.
- 2:32:40Five-yard penalty.
- 2:32:41Rich Watkins on the top along with Levi Stanley.
- 2:32:48The Watkins is seeing a good deal of action tonight after being out with an injury for most of the year.
- 2:32:54He played some the last couple of weeks.
- 2:32:58Looking from Weber State who had a couple of toppings with the New Orleans Saints a year ago.
- 2:33:03Four-ten left in the contest.
- 2:33:06Hawaiians leading by 18.
- 2:33:10And it's second at 15.
- 2:33:13Lindsay and Ike here are splitting the right side.
- 2:33:19Marks the tight end on the right side.
- 2:33:23Valbuena, top straightback.
- 2:33:25Set, Myers-Walve, and almost picked off, but a flag is thrown here at Kansas.
- 2:33:30It's up at the 40. Cross midfield into Hawaiian territory and dragged down to 36.
- 2:33:37What a strange play that was.
- 2:33:39And now they're taking an incomplete pass, I believe.
- 2:33:45The cornerback, Otto Brown, gambled and tried to make the interception.
- 2:33:50He cut in front of Harris, missed the ball, and Harris made a diving catch.
- 2:33:56It looked for a moment like he trapped the ball, then he got to his feet and ran down to the 37.
- 2:34:02A 49-yard pick-up on the play.
- 2:34:05First to 10, Southern California at the Hawaiian 37.
- 2:34:09Big play for the Sun.
- 2:34:12Valbuena waits for the snap, spins around, fires, three-pops to play to Denson.
- 2:34:16Denson looking for blocking, trying to jook for some room, gets up to the 30, and he's run out at the 28.
- 2:34:24Hawaiian maneuvering by Keith Denson, and he and Oly Reyes exchange words as Oly reps him out.
- 2:34:31That stops the clock with 3.13 left.
- 2:34:36The ball of the 28-yard line at the Hawaiian.
- 2:34:39He leads 32 to 14.
- 2:34:41Watkins goes out, and Dave Atkinson comes in.
- 2:34:46Chuck Denweiler goes out.
- 2:34:48Atkinson, the rookie from BYU, is in the defensive backfield now.
- 2:34:53We have Wojcik, Stanley, Easton, Burnham across the front line.
- 2:34:57Backus, Nidecky, and Young, the linebackers.
- 2:35:01Second and one. Valbuena rolling left, stops, fires, is caught by Linton inside the 15,
- 2:35:07and he's gang tackled and wrestled back to market forward progress at the 15-yard line.
- 2:35:12Southern California refuses to give up.
- 2:35:15With 3.05 left, I would say time is probably against them.
- 2:35:22Brother.
- 2:35:25In the first half, they scored in just 36 seconds, so don't count them out.
- 2:35:31Valbuena's done quite a job, taking over for Tony Adams.
- 2:35:34He did a five of nine passes, 120 yards.
- 2:35:37And now we have a face-match penalty against the Hawaiians.
- 2:35:42He'll knock the ball down at the 10-yard line on the penalty.
- 2:35:45First to foul, grabbing the face-match.
- 2:35:49Valbuena's first and goal to goal for the Sun at the Hawaiian pen.
- 2:35:533.05 left in the ballgame.
- 2:35:57For the winner, they move on to meet Birmingham next week, and for the loser,
- 2:36:01it'll be time to pack the bags and go home.
- 2:36:07Lindsay and Denson, foot to the left.
- 2:36:11Valbuena takes the snap, rolling right, has Locking looking.
- 2:36:14He may run, trying to get to the outside, and he's knocked down at the 14-yard line.
- 2:36:18He looked like he wanted to run.
- 2:36:21Adrian Young and Lem Burnham making the stop.
- 2:36:25The veteran and the rookie, Young in his seventh year from USC,
- 2:36:29and Lem Burnham in his first year from U.S. International.
- 2:36:33Young bounced around the NFL.
- 2:36:35He's been to the Eagles, the Lions, the Saints, and most recently the Chicago Bears.
- 2:36:43Second down and goal to goal for the Sun at the Hawaiian's 14-yard line.
- 2:36:47Two and a half minutes left in the game.
- 2:36:49Valbuena, straight back, steps up, fires, and it's kicked off by Adrian Young.
- 2:36:54His second interception, and he's wrestled down to seven.
- 2:36:57And now some late hitting taking part, as Lindsay and Andre go at it.
- 2:37:02Adrian Young playing a great ballgame, coming up with a big interception.
- 2:37:07That should be the final nail in the coffin for Southern California's concern.
- 2:37:12Two-twenty left in the game.
- 2:37:17The defense has come up with some big plays tonight for the Hawaiian.
- 2:37:22Think back to the beginning of the year when this was a defense that was riddled by passes.
- 2:37:27Over the past ten games they've been the WFL's best, yielding less than 100 yards per game.
- 2:37:36First stand ten for the Hawaiian at their seven-yard line following Young's interception.
- 2:37:42North-Wheath has replaced Randy Johnson at quarterback.
- 2:37:46Keith and O'Leary are the running backs.
- 2:37:49Long count by Weath to give to O'Leary, follows Slate-Metroceptorville and spins out to about the seven-yard line.
- 2:37:58Two-twelve left in the game, they'll take a timeout for the two-minute warning.
- 2:38:05The fans continuing to leave.
- 2:38:09The WFL team is about to come to a close for the Southern California Sun as they take a timeout for the two-minute warning and we'll stay right here.
- 2:38:21Another WFL playoff game tonight.
- 2:38:23The Florida Blazers beat the Philadelphia Bell 18-3 down in Orlando.
- 2:38:27The Blazers will move on to meet the Memphis Southman next Friday night in Memphis and the Hawaiians will play the Birmingham Americans next Wednesday in Birmingham and you'll hear that game on the Superbee.
- 2:38:43Before these playoffs started, Mike Gidding, the Hawaiian's coach, said he thought his club could go all the way.
- 2:38:51He thought they could win it all and they have taken one giant step toward that goal tonight.
- 2:38:58A lot of the subs in there now, let's see if they can pick them up for you.
- 2:39:03Al Oliver is going to tackle. He was a starter early in the year but banged up a knee.
- 2:39:10Weath is a quarterback, Keith and O'Leary the running backs.
- 2:39:15Most of the starting offensive line is still in there, Wilbur, Richards, Corny Johnson, Gadeel.
- 2:39:24Brady Richardson in a wide receiver.
- 2:39:27Two minutes left in the game, it's second down and ten for the Hawaiians.
- 2:39:31At their seven-yard line.
- 2:39:36Richardson's foot's out to the left.
- 2:39:38Derrick Williams is also in a wide receiver for the first time.
- 2:39:41He flanks to the right.
- 2:39:44So the Hawaiians will win the rubber match in the battle between these two clubs.
- 2:39:50Al Oliver's play, Weath keeps and falls to the ground and he's knocked down to five.
- 2:39:54A loss to the couple on the play.
- 2:39:58North couldn't find anyone to get on to.
- 2:40:02And it'll be third and twelve. Two more subs come on for the Hawaiians.
- 2:40:06And the Sun will take a timeout.
- 2:40:09We have an injured player for the Hawaiians and this could be a costly injury.
- 2:40:14Corny Johnson is hurt.
- 2:40:16He's down on the ground. Richard Sheik trying to help him up and trainer Link Kamura comes out.
- 2:40:23Johnson has been a main hog for the Hawaiians.
- 2:40:27He lives in an offensive line.
- 2:40:29An eight-year veteran from Virginia Union played for the Baltimore Colts where he was a starter and then was traded to the Redskins.
- 2:40:36Kind of an interesting story about how Corny ended up with the Hawaiians.
- 2:40:40They had signed John Wilbur as the future for next year.
- 2:40:44Wilbur was released by the Washington Redskins this year.
- 2:40:48And Corny, Corny Johnson had a contract with George Allen.
- 2:40:53And so they released Corny as well and Wilbur said, look, come to Hawaii. I think you'll like it.
- 2:40:59Well, Johnson was on his way to the Denver Broncos. He had an offer from them.
- 2:41:03But decided he'd go with his buddy Wilbur. They're roommates on the road and they're good friends.
- 2:41:07And so he ended up in Hawaii.
- 2:41:09So it was kind of a double fine for the Hawaiians. Both excellent offensive linemen.
- 2:41:14Johnson lifts off the field and hopefully he's okay.
- 2:41:19He'll leave the game and Richard Sheik has replaced him.
- 2:41:22One-fifty-five left in the ball game. The Hawaiians on top, 32 to 14. Third down, 12.
- 2:41:28At their own five.
- 2:41:31Eric Williams with left, John Eisenbarger right. Weiss at the control.
- 2:41:38Long count by North. Eisenbarger goes in motion.
- 2:41:43Weiss gives Ernie O'Leary, following Richard Sheik. He punches out for about seven where he's not down.
- 2:41:49John Hoffman on the stop. Along with Eric Patton.
- 2:41:54It'll be fourth down and the Hawaiians will have to kick the ball away.
- 2:42:02And Southern California takes their final count.
- 2:42:08They will probably come with a big rush and try to block this kick.
- 2:42:12They're 18 points down with 141 left. So really not much left in Southern California.
- 2:42:23Talking about the strange things that happen and what a small world pro football is.
- 2:42:29I was having dinner tonight with some of the Hawaiians and Dave Ulrich was telling me a story.
- 2:42:33He said, you know, the center for Southern California,
- 2:42:39the backup center, Chuck Bradley,
- 2:42:44Dave Ulrich was his Babe Ruth League baseball coach and he said he almost died last week,
- 2:42:49last time he clubbed Matt. We looked over and saw Bradley. Coach playing against his old player.
- 2:42:55Back is hanged up a high lazy putt taken by Denson in midfield running laterally.
- 2:43:00Gets a block, tries to cut back and a flag is thrown.
- 2:43:03They have a clip.
- 2:43:05As Denson was buried at the 49-line of Southern California.
- 2:43:12One of the Sun players is very upset. Ken Lee, some of his teammates restraining him.
- 2:43:19And I think we're going to have a clip against the Sun.
- 2:43:2344-yard putt by Back is really drove it high.
- 2:43:27Clipping the call against Southern California.
- 2:43:31Advanced and remain, let loose with a chorus of booze.
- 2:43:37That's spelled B-O-O-O-O-O-O-D-E.
- 2:43:42That may be the case too.
- 2:43:4615-yard penalty against the Sun. Back of their 30-yard line.
- 2:43:50John Mosley comes in a defensive back, replacing Willie Williams who's played a fine ball game.
- 2:43:55First and 10 for the Sun. 128 left in the Hawaiian.
- 2:44:01They're beginning to go into the locker room and celebrate a bit as they've taken a step toward a possible World Football League title.
- 2:44:08Val Buena takes the snap.
- 2:44:10Backs, fires as he fobbers, gets it away and it's incomplete.
- 2:44:13Val Buena went down again.
- 2:44:15There's a crash rush. Levi Stanley getting hurt.
- 2:44:19Rich Watkins also in there.
- 2:44:23The Hawaiian team really kept the pressure on tonight.
- 2:44:26Val Buena's compounded five out of 11 for 101 yards, but he's had three intercepted tonight.
- 2:44:35He said at the beginning of the broadcast the quarterbacks would come out throwing and that they did.
- 2:44:40Both Johnson and Adams had good success, but Adams left the game with an injury.
- 2:44:47That was a key point as far as Southern California is concerned.
- 2:44:52Ulrich in the middle linebacker.
- 2:44:55Val Buena went over the air.
- 2:44:57It is 20 fires and it's caught by Clay Jeffries and he's knocked down at the 38 yard line.
- 2:45:04Dave Ulrich on the stop.
- 2:45:06Ulrich an eight-year veteran from San Francisco.
- 2:45:09Imagine by now you've heard a story about how Ulrich got started in football.
- 2:45:14He was dating John Brody's sister and when he graduated from San Francisco, Brody got Ulrich a tryout with the 49ers.
- 2:45:21He's been around three years.
- 2:45:23He's got pumps, looks, fires, it's caught.
- 2:45:25Lindsay Haffin spins away from one tackler.
- 2:45:27Ulrich is forward to the 50 yard line where he's knocked down, a 50-second slap.
- 2:45:33So this one is wrapped up as far as the Hawaiians are concerned.
- 2:45:37Southern California lining up with the huddles.
- 2:45:40Three e-gluts on that side.
- 2:45:44Second-year pro from Stephen F. Austin is in the game now.
- 2:45:47Val Buena drops back, steps up in the pocket, fires to the short man Jeffries.
- 2:45:51Ulrich is at 40, trying to get to the outside to stop the clock.
- 2:45:54And he works out on the far sideline with 26 seconds left.
- 2:45:5914 yard pick-up.
- 2:46:05Dave, we can pick up some of the new faces in that defensive lineup for you.
- 2:46:09John Douglas is in.
- 2:46:11Dave Atkinson is in there.
- 2:46:15Rich Watkins on the front line.
- 2:46:17John Mosley.
- 2:46:2026 seconds left, and this may very well be the final play of the ballgame.
- 2:46:26Hawaiians leading 32 to 14.
- 2:46:32Dave Williams has played very little in this second half,
- 2:46:34lifts out to his position wide to the right.
- 2:46:36He's been playing with a badly sprained ankle.
- 2:46:38Now it's the movement on the front line.
- 2:46:40The Hawaiians collide and the flags go flying.
- 2:46:43Levi Stanley was across for the Hawaiians.
- 2:46:45And he was drawn across, illegal procedure against Southern California.
- 2:46:54With 26 seconds left in the game.
- 2:46:59Getting back to that story about Ulrich, he didn't play college football in San Francisco.
- 2:47:04They had club football, which is the kind of play if you want to.
- 2:47:08There were training rules and that kind of thing, basically for fun.
- 2:47:13Dave got out of school, he didn't know what he wanted to do,
- 2:47:15and John Brody got him a tryout.
- 2:47:18Ulrich had some funny things happen to him.
- 2:47:20He started as a tight end, had one reception which he fumbled, the ball was lost.
- 2:47:25That was his only reception in pro football.
- 2:47:28Last year he was traded by the 49ers to the Chicago Bears.
- 2:47:31If he had to pick a day, Ulrich was traded on his school's day.
- 2:47:35Valbuena unloads a bomb.
- 2:47:37He's got a man out there and it's incomplete.
- 2:47:40It's the end of Dave Williams, the intended receiver.
- 2:47:45But Otto Brown back there with him.
- 2:47:47The Hawaiians in a pre-match defense.
- 2:47:50And that stops the clock with 20 seconds left in the game.
- 2:47:54It'll be second and 15.
- 2:47:57Everybody in the ballpark knows what Valbuena will do.
- 2:48:02There's not much hope left.
- 2:48:0622 to 14 in favor of the Hawaiians.
- 2:48:10A convincing victory, although at times the momentum shifted back and forth.
- 2:48:15The Hawaiians jumped out with 17 to nothing lead.
- 2:48:18Southern California came back to make it 17 to 11 half-time.
- 2:48:22Valbuena rolling to his left, fires on the run, and it's blocked by Nissen at the 22 yard line.
- 2:48:27He has the first sound.
- 2:48:29The clock's rolling.
- 2:48:30Southern California is out of timeout.
- 2:48:32Mostly making the stop, but the time may run out.
- 2:48:36Four seconds left.
- 2:48:39And, well, they had one sound out remaining, evidently.
- 2:48:45Because Southern California takes the time with three seconds left on the clock.
- 2:48:52And if they can figure out how to put 18 points on the board in three seconds, there's just no way.
- 2:49:01But they would like to get another touchdown and narrow the deficit a bit.
- 2:49:07So the Hawaiians will move on to meet the Birmingham Americans next week in Birmingham, next Wednesday, the 27th.
- 2:49:18Birmingham has revenge in mind because the Hawaiians beat them 14 to 8 at Honolulu Stadium after Birmingham crushed them down in Alabama earlier in the year.
- 2:49:30Hawaiians really feel they can play with anybody in the league, and they certainly proved that point.
- 2:49:35You get a different feeling in talking to the players now.
- 2:49:37At the beginning of the year, when they'd go out to face someone, a team composed of rookies, you got the idea that they were kind of frightened at times or were in awe, but now they really feel that they can beat anyone.
- 2:49:48A lot of confidence on this club.
- 2:49:50Valbuena will throw this will be the final play.
- 2:49:52Two seconds.
- 2:49:53He fires.
- 2:49:54It's blocked by Nissen, and Nissen has wrestled down the floor.
- 2:49:57The game comes to an end.
- 2:50:00So the Southern California drive is ended by the final gun, and he ended the game.
- 2:50:05The final score, the Hawaiians 32, the Southern California Sun 14.
- 2:50:10Stay tuned for Hawaiians football wrap-up.
