- 0:01In the external life, we are trained to desire visible signs
- 0:04of forward movement, progress, constant development.
- 0:09We believe if we are not moving forward, then we must be
- 0:12retrogressing. We value action over quiet
- 0:16times. When we are relieved from
- 0:19action, such as during a vacation or at the stage of
- 0:23retirement from the working life, we frequently find that
- 0:27there is a complete sensation from involvement in almost any
- 0:31form of activity. The statement that I do not want
- 0:36to do any work I worked my whole life is a frequent accompaniment
- 0:40to this state of affairs, illustrating the state of mind
- 0:44of the individual. We tend to carry over these
- 0:48attitudes into the spiritual sadhna until such time as we
- 0:52gain the understanding that spiritual growth is not always
- 0:55visible and not always dynamically active on the
- 0:59surface. Srioro Bindo describes a process
- 1:03of ascent and integration. The spiritual power shifts us
- 1:08into a higher vibratory pattern, but it's still need to work
- 1:13itself out through the mind, the vital being, and the physical
- 1:17body. Each of these successively more
- 1:20dense aspects of our being need to both imbibe the new energy
- 1:26and adjust their functioning to accommodate the new force at
- 1:30work. Much of this process goes on
- 1:33behind the scenes. We may not see the work going
- 1:36on, but it continues nevertheless.
- 1:41The real issue then comes down to the reaction the seeker has
- 1:45to these periods of assimilation.
- 1:48As long as he is carrying the habitual pattern of the external
- 1:51life and its set of expectations, he becomes
- 1:55distressed and concerned about the lack of visible forward
- 1:59movement and he can either fall into a state of depression or a
- 2:04state evidencing a lack of faith in the process.
- 2:08This can create a lot of unnecessary tension and self
- 2:11doubt which simply disrupts the energetic flow and slows it
- 2:16down. A balance needs to be found that
- 2:19provides the seeker with understanding, patience,
- 2:23perseverance and ongoing aspiration.
- 2:27The focusing of the mind and heart on the inner psychic being
- 2:31and its natural link to the Divine, if possible during these
- 2:35periods, is of immense value. Shriora window notes quote the
- 2:42interval periods when all is quiet and nothing being done on
- 2:46the surface come to all and cannot be avoided.
- 2:51You must not cherish the suggestion that is it is because
- 2:54of your want of aspiration or any other unfitness that it is
- 2:59so. And if you had the constant
- 3:03ardent aspiration, then there would be no such periods and
- 3:07there would be an uninterrupted stream of experiences.
- 3:11It is not so. Even if the aspiration were
- 3:15there, the interval periods would come.
- 3:19If even in them one can aspire, so much the better.
- 3:24But the main thing is to meet them with quietude and not
- 3:27become restless, depressed or despondent.
- 3:32A constant fire can be there only after a certain stage has
- 3:38been reached, that is, when one is always inside, consciously
- 3:42living in the psychic being. But for that all this
- 3:46preparation of the mind, vital, physical, is necessary.
- 3:51For this fire belongs to the psychic, and one cannot command
- 3:56it always merely by the mind's effort.
- 4:00Naturally, the more one pointed the aspiration, the swifter the
- 4:04progress. The difficulty comes when either
- 4:07the vital with its desires or the physical with its past
- 4:11habitual movements comes in, as they do with almost everyone.
- 4:16It is then that the dryness and difficulty of spontaneous
- 4:20aspiration come. This dryness is a well known
- 4:24obstacle in all sadhna, but one has to persist and not be
- 4:29discouraged if one keeps the will fixed.
- 4:32Even in these barren periods they pass, and after their
- 4:37passage a greater force of aspiration and experience
- 4:42becomes possible. End Quote.
