- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, where are we going next on this?
- 0:02Speaker 2: We are going to East Lansing, or I guess really
- 0:05Speaker 2: South Bend, which was a very weird game.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Very weird game. Notre Dame beats Michigan State. Tom, we've
- 0:12Speaker 3: done a lot of SEC. The SEC had a loaded slate.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Last week, they've got a loaded slate coming up, but
- 0:16Speaker 3: the Big Ten did play one team out of conference
- 0:19Speaker 3: this week, not Portland State. It was Notre Dame, and
- 0:22Speaker 3: Notre Dame won, maybe not the way that any of
- 0:25Speaker 3: us predicted. We had Notre Dame winning big and said
- 0:28Speaker 3: that they would kind of call their score This one
- 0:30Speaker 3: was a little bit ugly. We are presented by Prize Picks. Tom,
- 0:33Speaker 3: what were your thoughts on Notre Dame at Michigan State?
- 0:37Speaker 4: Pat Fitzgerald has an identity, and what he was doing
- 0:41Speaker 4: at Northwestern, he's doing all over again at Michigan State.
- 0:44Speaker 4: So credit to Michigan State's defense because they played smart, tough,
- 0:48Speaker 4: disciplined football. The hallmark of Pat Fitzgerald defenses is that
- 0:52Speaker 4: they might not have the best athletes on the field,
- 0:55Speaker 4: but they're going to be in position 99 times out
- 0:58Speaker 4: of 100. and they drag you down. They want to
- 1:00Speaker 4: play leather helmet football. Michigan State did exactly that. So
- 1:04Speaker 4: credit to the Spartans in this game. On the flip side,
- 1:07Speaker 4: Notre Dame's defense did pretty much whatever they wanted with
- 1:11Speaker 4: Michigan State in this game. Milivojevic finishing the game, what
- 1:15Speaker 4: was his stat line? Nine of 17 passing, two interceptions.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Backup Fancher is a transfer. He was 0 for 1.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Cam Edwards, who was supposed to be the bell cowl,
- 1:25Speaker 4: 12 carries.
- 1:27Speaker 5: For 38 yards, 3.2 yards per carry.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Michigan State finished the game with 1.6 yards per carry,
- 1:34Speaker 4: rushing 44 yards on the ground. That's as good of
- 1:37Speaker 4: a day as Notre Dame could have asked for defensively.
- 1:40Speaker 4: What everybody is going to focus on is what's going
- 1:42Speaker 4: on with Notre Dame's offense. Because that was the point
- 1:46Speaker 4: that people were saying, you know what? Notre Dame's just
- 1:48Speaker 4: working on stuff. They've got their bigger games ahead of them.
- 1:51Speaker 4: So we just need to tinker at this point in time.
- 1:55Speaker 4: This was a decent.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Day for C.J.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Carr.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I don't look at what he did as anything earth shattering.
- 2:01Speaker 4: I thought he did just fine across the board. Statistically speaking,
- 2:04Speaker 4: it looks good on paper, but it didn't blow you away,
- 2:07Speaker 4: I guess. I guess the jury is still out in
- 2:10Speaker 4: terms of who the number one running back is, because
- 2:13Speaker 4: Aeneas Williams, you know, Noah's.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Nolan James Jr.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Was very good in this game on the ground, so
- 2:18Speaker 4: they got some answers, but also some more questions there.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Maybe the running back room is a little bit deeper
- 2:24Speaker 4: than we thought it was going to be. And then
- 2:26Speaker 4: you have a great game from Micah Gilbert and Jordan
- 2:29Speaker 4: Faison comes in there, but Gilbert comes up with eight
- 2:31Speaker 4: for 170. So there's some answers, but there's just some
- 2:35Speaker 4: head scratchers with Notre Dame, and it's just– I think
- 2:38Speaker 4: back to the game they had last year against Boston College. Granted,
- 2:41Speaker 4: it was a road game. Eerily similar score. kind of
- 2:44Speaker 4: in the ballpark of this where a Notre Dame team
- 2:47Speaker 4: that was similar just kind of played down to their competition.
- 2:51Speaker 4: And I was surprised to see that because if the
- 2:53Speaker 4: mantra for Notre Dame coming into this season was leave
- 2:56Speaker 4: no doubt, you didn't necessarily walk away from this one
- 2:59Speaker 4: thinking like, hmm, Notre Dame just smoked them.
- 3:01Speaker 5: And rolled on out of there.
- 3:03Speaker 4: This was tougher than I think Notre Dame expected. Hats
- 3:06Speaker 4: off to Michigan State on that one. But I'm still
- 3:08Speaker 4: waiting to see Notre Dame put it all together offensively.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I want to ask you, where do you rank Notre
- 3:14Speaker 2: Dame in the top seven right now? Because a lot
- 3:17Speaker 2: of people with the AP poll are losing their mind
- 3:20Speaker 2: that Notre Dame is at three and Ole Miss with
- 3:22Speaker 2: wins over Louisville and LSU is at four. And I
- 3:27Speaker 2: get it. Because what's the impressive win? Not saying that
- 3:32Speaker 2: it hasn't been good. Not saying that you aren't a
- 3:35Speaker 2: national title contender. But what's the win that you're like, yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 2: this is where we've seen them finally arrive?
- 3:41Speaker 5: Just wondering.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Not picking stones here. Just wondering.
- 3:44Speaker 4: No, but I'm with you in that the two most
- 3:46Speaker 4: impressive wins three weeks into the season belong to Ole Miss. Well,
- 3:53Speaker 4: I would give Texas one. I'll give Texas one. But
- 3:56Speaker 4: Texas stunk for three quarters, and they figured out the fourth. So,
- 3:59Speaker 4: I mean, you know, it was– You beat the number
- 4:02Speaker 4: one team in the country. So yes, I will give
- 4:03Speaker 4: that to Texas. But for one team having played three
- 4:06Speaker 4: games at this point, who has the most impressive resume,
- 4:08Speaker 4: it's Ole Miss.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Saban would actually give Ohio State's loss more credit than
- 4:14Speaker 3: anyone else's wins if.
- 4:16Speaker 1: You think about it that way. I'm going to use
- 4:18Speaker 1: that all year.
- 4:19Speaker 4: It's the challenge when it comes to the freaking AP
- 4:23Speaker 4: poll is that there's the expectation of where The voters
- 4:27Speaker 4: think that the team is going to end up what
- 4:29Speaker 4: they thought they were in the preseason, having played no games.
- 4:32Speaker 5: And now we've actually seen games play, like be played.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Like you've seen how these teams have looked.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Notre Dame has not played a truly credible top flight opponent.
- 4:44Speaker 4: No disrespect to Michigan State and Wisconsin, who are Big
- 4:47Speaker 4: Ten teams, who are Power Four teams, Power Two teams.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Hey, guys, just a real quick break from the video
- 4:52Speaker 3: to tell you, go check out the Price Picks app.

- 5:06Speaker 3: as well. We've got the Heisman odds right here. Those
- 5:09Speaker 3: continue to update. Trinidad, number one. You've got Darian Mensah
- 5:13Speaker 3: up there at number two. Camario Taylor, shout out Mississippi State,
- 5:16Speaker 3: number three. You've got Jeremiah Smith, CJ Carr, Jaden Baugh.
- 5:20Speaker 3: all the way up to number six, Arch Manning, Gunnar Stockton,
- 5:22Speaker 3: Julian Sayen, Malachi Toney, Will Hammond, a ton of names here.
- 5:26Speaker 3: You can go play team picks as well. You can
- 5:28Speaker 3: take first team to score. You can take a bunch
- 5:30Speaker 3: of different picks on the PrizePicks app. Go check them out.
- 5:35Speaker 3: We appreciate them for their support. Now back to the
- 5:37Speaker 3: clip on the Power 2.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Name of the show.
- 5:40Speaker 4: But goodness, play somebody, and then we can move you
- 5:44Speaker 4: to number three. But I would move them down at
- 5:46Speaker 4: this point, and I get it. They won, so you
- 5:48Speaker 4: can't penalize them. okay, well, we didn't really penalize Ohio
- 5:52Speaker 4: State all that much in the grand scheme of things,
- 5:54Speaker 4: and they lost this.
- 5:55Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I mean, you can penalize them. Miami got penalized for
- 5:59Speaker 2: winning and winning after it being a very ugly third
- 6:02Speaker 2: and fourth quarter.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I watched that Miami-Wake Forest game. Miami should get penalized
- 6:07Speaker 4: for letting that game be close.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Sure, but my point is, again, it's not that Notre
- 6:12Speaker 2: Dame can't win a national title. I still have not
- 6:14Speaker 2: sold any of my Notre Dame stock. But when we're
- 6:16Speaker 2: trying to come up with reasons of why this team
- 6:18Speaker 2: ranks where, It's very hard for me to say that
- 6:21Speaker 2: because of Notre Dame was at the start a top
- 6:25Speaker 2: seven team. Oh, because of other teams that had them lost,
- 6:28Speaker 2: we're just moving them upwards. When there's been more impressive
- 6:31Speaker 2: games and showcases from teams that have the same record
- 6:34Speaker 2: as them. That being said, the reason why this game
- 6:37Speaker 2: is weird is that you look at everything about this
- 6:39Speaker 2: matchup and you say, there's no way that this should
- 6:43Speaker 2: have been a 17 point affair. First down differential, nine.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Total yard differential. Nearly 200. I mean, over 200. Passing differential.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Almost 115. Running differential. 140. Time of possession. 37 minutes
- 7:02Speaker 2: to 23 minutes. The only area where Notre Dame was
- 7:06Speaker 2: actually worse than Michigan State was penalties.
- 7:11Speaker 1: By one.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I mean, and that's why it's so confusing. Micah Gilbert.
- 7:17Speaker 2: had 170 receiving yards in this game. And he had
- 7:20Speaker 2: one of the most impressive catches. Milosevic had 123 passing yards.
- 7:26Speaker 2: The wide receiver, who was one weapon, had more receiving
- 7:31Speaker 2: yards than Michigan State had passing. And so you just
- 7:34Speaker 2: say to yourself, it was a down game that kind
- 7:37Speaker 2: of ended in a lull, which you're allowed to have
- 7:40Speaker 2: in college football. And at the end of the day,
- 7:42Speaker 2: a win is a win. I just wonder what are
- 7:45Speaker 2: we missing from this offense right now that I think
- 7:48Speaker 2: needs to get to that next gear. I think that's
- 7:51Speaker 2: where I'm at. I will fight back on one thing.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I think that as much as Aeneas Williams is a
- 7:56Speaker 2: fine running back, I'm giving the ball to Nolan James
- 7:58Speaker 2: until he proves otherwise not. Nolan James looked really good
- 8:01Speaker 2: in opportunities. He had a couple of explosive runs.
- 8:04Speaker 4: And I think that's on Aeneas Williams for kind of
- 8:06Speaker 4: like leaving the door open a little bit. like Nolan
- 8:09Speaker 4: James being able to just take the job. And I
- 8:12Speaker 4: don't know if that's going to be the case moving forward.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Maybe it's a little bit running back by committee.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Um, also CJ car really lit it up this year.
- 8:21Speaker 2: He's been good, but good.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I mean like, okay.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Has arch really lit up this year or has he
- 8:26Speaker 2: been good?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Tom's an arch hater anyway.
- 8:28Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 8:29Speaker 1: You ain't going to get a pushback from him on that.
- 8:32Speaker 5: I'm really not an Arch hater.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I think he hates the hype around it.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I hate that he could get drafted number one overall
- 8:39Speaker 4: at some point because of his last name, and that's unfortunate.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Sure. Look at the body of work. Look at the athlete.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Look at what he's done.
- 8:45Speaker 4: CJ Carr doesn't look like he's taken some gigantic leap
- 8:48Speaker 4: from last season.
- 8:49Speaker 5: He was good last season. He's good this season.
- 8:53Speaker 4: But it's not like, for instance, Trinidad last year was
- 8:57Speaker 4: playing a lot of backyard ball. He's got the backyard ball,
- 9:00Speaker 4: but I wouldn't describe it as backyard ball anymore. It's
- 9:03Speaker 4: improv plus playing within the structure of the offense.
- 9:06Speaker 5: That's deadly.
- 9:08Speaker 4: I haven't seen C.J. Carr get to the point where
- 9:10Speaker 4: he's like, oh, I can elevate everybody around me. He
- 9:13Speaker 4: seems like he's playing within the structure.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if I'm pushing back so much
- 9:17Speaker 3: on that or just kind of providing some context.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I mean, I still think he's been really good, though,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and I think C.J.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Carr– I don't know how much of a leap you'd
- 9:26Speaker 3: like to see everybody take a leap year over year,
- 9:28Speaker 3: but I don't know how much of a leap he
- 9:29Speaker 3: needed to take with kind of where he was last year.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Like he's still completing like 73% of his passes. You know,
- 9:37Speaker 3: they're not, I mean, what did they ask him to
- 9:39Speaker 3: throw like 22 times, 23 times?
- 9:41Speaker 1: What did he have for?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Like, I don't know.
- 9:44Speaker 3: They're not asking him to do a lot, but he's
- 9:45Speaker 3: still incredibly efficient.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And so I don't know.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I think, I think he's been fine, but I also
- 9:50Speaker 3: feel like Notre Dame is, It just doesn't, I don't,
- 9:54Speaker 3: you would have really liked to see them just come
- 9:55Speaker 3: out and go nuts in this game.
- 9:58Speaker 1: And they just didn't.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Right.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Like, and, and credit to credit, they ran the ball.
- 10:03Speaker 5: Well, credit Michigan state for what they did defensively. Like
- 10:06Speaker 5: they do deserve their flowers.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I mean, Notre Dame ran for 161 yards. They passed
- 10:11Speaker 3: for two 34. They were incredibly balanced. They didn't make mistakes.
- 10:16Speaker 3: They just weren't, I think they just had an opportunity
- 10:20Speaker 3: to go, go, go crazy against Michigan state.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And they didn't. And again, credit to the Spartans for that, but.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 10:29Speaker 2: It's a weird feeling of where do you put them
- 10:31Speaker 2: right now?
- 10:32Speaker 1: I'll, I'll tell you.
- 10:33Speaker 5: I mean, they're.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Well, I mean like in the pecking order of like
- 10:37Speaker 2: the top seven, nobody is saying that you knock them
- 10:39Speaker 2: outside of even the top.
- 10:40Speaker 5: Oh no.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I mean, I, to me, I don't even really care.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Like to me, Texas deserves one Ole miss might deserve two.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And then.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Three, you know, Ohio state deserves seven to me for
- 10:54Speaker 1: losing a game. Sorry, Nick. But other than that, I
- 10:58Speaker 1: don't think it really matters.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Like three for both teams right now.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Yeah. Three, three, three.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I mean, you know, I was sitting there on Friday
- 11:05Speaker 3: night thinking, Oh, Miami better get healthy and clean some
- 11:08Speaker 3: things up or Notre Dame is going to beat them.
- 11:09Speaker 3: And then I watched Notre Dame the next day. Well,
- 11:11Speaker 3: I watched the recap. I watched the condensed game on YouTube.
- 11:14Speaker 3: I watched her name the next day and I'm like, Oh,
- 11:16Speaker 3: kind of the same thing. You know, like a lot
- 11:18Speaker 3: of these teams have things they need to fix. But again,
- 11:20Speaker 3: I also watched Alabama in person. Not that I think
- 11:23Speaker 3: they're a team that's going to go win a national
- 11:24Speaker 3: championship this year, but like, you know, LSU, I've said
- 11:27Speaker 3: that they were a team.
- 11:28Speaker 1: That can win a national championship early and you watch them.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And so I don't know if all of these teams
- 11:32Speaker 3: do have warts, Texas falling asleep for three quarters, Ohio
- 11:35Speaker 3: state falling asleep for two quarters. Like there's a, there
- 11:38Speaker 3: is a lot of this right now. I think it's
- 11:40Speaker 3: a lot of the, a lot of it is a
- 11:41Speaker 3: Tom may have mentioned this earlier. This transfer portal game
- 11:44Speaker 3: that we kind of play right now, maybe it's taking
- 11:46Speaker 3: teams a little more time to settle in fully.
- 11:49Speaker 5: I think it's that.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Also, I just think the AP poll is stupid. It's
- 11:54Speaker 4: not like being realistic. Does Georgia deserve to be the
- 11:57Speaker 4: number two team in the country, having beaten no one
- 11:59Speaker 4: in three weeks? If we're just basing this off of
- 12:01Speaker 4: the games played, do they look like the number two
- 12:04Speaker 4: team in the country against an Arkansas team that is
- 12:09Speaker 4: barely breathing? What are we talking about? Texas beat Ohio State. Okay,
- 12:14Speaker 4: that's a heavyweight knocking out another heavyweight. Yes, you deserve
- 12:17Speaker 4: to be there. Who has Miami played? Who has Miami
- 12:20Speaker 4: played at this point?
- 12:21Speaker 2: What if Wake Forest is legit, though?
- 12:23Speaker 5: I don't think they're legit. And I'll do respect Wake Forest.
- 12:26Speaker 4: But in the grand scheme of college football, I don't
- 12:28Speaker 4: think they're a team that is going to show up in.
- 12:30Speaker 1: The ACC game. There are 75 ACC teams.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Miami played down, I think, on the road. They didn't
- 12:35Speaker 4: play their best game. Notre Dame's not played anybody. Ole Miss,
- 12:39Speaker 4: two out of three of their games, legitimate opponents. Who
- 12:41Speaker 4: has Indiana played?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Nobody.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I mean, Western Kentucky.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Oh, gosh, shut up. Here's what I'll tell you. Here's
- 12:51Speaker 1: what I'll tell you about Notre Dame, though.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I think that BYU game is going to be a
- 12:57Speaker 3: little bit tougher than I thought in the offseason.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I think, and I'm not even like a Notre Dame doubter.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I just, I'm buying, and they played Colorado State this weekend,
- 13:09Speaker 3: so this is not like, oh man, BYU beat the
- 13:10Speaker 3: hell out of Colorado State, who scored a couple of
- 13:13Speaker 3: times late to make that look better, you know, when
- 13:15Speaker 3: we're talking about the Florida game, kind of similar situation there.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I think BYU's really good.
- 13:20Speaker 2: They're good.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Not like national championship good, but like, make the playoff
- 13:25Speaker 3: probably the best in the Big 12, will be really
- 13:29Speaker 3: healthy because they don't play a tough Big 12 schedule. Like,
- 13:33Speaker 3: that Notre Dame-BYU game, should have a few more like
- 13:37Speaker 3: alerts and signals up than it did in the off season.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Because I just had that pencil and is a Notre
- 13:42Speaker 3: Dame win. And I still would lean Notre Dame, but
- 13:45Speaker 3: I'll tell you, I think it's tougher than it was
- 13:47Speaker 3: six weeks ago.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I will say, I hope that Notre Dame has a
- 13:51Speaker 2: game plan next week against Purdue. And I say this
- 13:56Speaker 2: with the utmost respect. I really do. I think they're
- 13:58Speaker 2: going to be pretty. I'm not changing my stance, not whatsoever, but,
- 14:02Speaker 2: But Purdue has looked a lot better this year. And
- 14:05Speaker 2: so it's not just like, oh, because it's Purdue. And
- 14:10Speaker 2: you boys know how I feel about Purdue. So we're
- 14:12Speaker 2: not going to try to pretend like I'm giving them praises.
- 14:15Speaker 2: It's not a guarantee that every game that you have
- 14:17Speaker 2: is going to just be in your favor. And the
- 14:20Speaker 2: thing with Notre Dame that I think that you have
- 14:21Speaker 2: to remind yourself of, fair or not, fair or not,
- 14:25Speaker 2: and I think this is a poignant attitude, Style points
- 14:28Speaker 2: are going to matter for you more than anyone else
- 14:30Speaker 2: because of you play a non-conference schedule. So how it
- 14:34Speaker 2: looks is as important if you are 10-2. Because the
- 14:37Speaker 2: last thing that you can afford to do is have
- 14:39Speaker 2: the committee go ahead and nitpick why was this a
- 14:42Speaker 2: 17-point win against a 3-9 Michigan State. Why was this a,
- 14:49Speaker 2: why was this a 13 point win against a two
- 14:52Speaker 2: and 10 Purdue? Like you can't afford that opportunity. So again,
- 14:57Speaker 2: Notre Dame, I still believe it as a team that
- 14:58Speaker 2: can go to the national championship. I still believe that
- 15:00Speaker 2: they can absolutely get it together. I'm not selling any
- 15:03Speaker 2: of my stock. I'm just wondering, what is it that
- 15:07Speaker 2: is like 90% of the project done, and then as
- 15:10Speaker 2: you're turning in, you sneeze, and half the work has disappeared,
- 15:14Speaker 2: and you're like, oh, but look at everything I did
- 15:16Speaker 2: to get here. Right, but the answer's not there. Because again,
- 15:21Speaker 2: if I see a 200-yard differential, I shouldn't see a
- 15:25Speaker 2: 17-point differential.
