- 2:15blood and water that flow from his pierced side and help me never to lose
- 2:21my trust in this fountain of love and mercy. With you, O Immaculate Mother, you
- 2:27who always do the will of God, I unite myself to the perfect consecration of
- 2:33Jesus as he offers himself in the Spirit to the Father for the life of the world.
- 2:40Amen. In the name of the Father and Son of the Holy Ghost, amen.
- 2:43Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
- 2:53Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death, amen.
- 2:59Our Lady of the Holy Name of God, pray for us. St. Martha, pray for us.
- 3:04All our patron saints and guardian angels, pray for us. In the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Ghost, amen.
- 3:10Amen. Thank you, Father.
- 3:14You're welcome.
- 3:16Yeah.
- 3:17So we'll start with the manual of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face.
- 3:23And last time we started with the six conditions to discern becoming a member of the
- 3:30confraternities of the Holy Face. And for those who would like to get one of these,
- 3:37I recommend you go to our website, The League of St. Martin, where we've been publishing these for about five years now.
- 3:45And we've probably sold over 5,000 of them.
- 3:51And we looked at the table of contents and there's a preface there, which we're not going to go over because I'll let you all read that.
- 3:59But that preface basically talks about when this was a confraternity, they had written a booklet for it.
- 4:06But this confraternity was elevated to an archconfraternity.
- 4:10And so they wanted to tell the people before what was going to be in this book.
- 4:15And so we'll do that over the course of time.
- 4:18So those of you that are following along, we're going to go to part one, page one.
- 4:25And these are official documents and observations.
- 4:28And this is very important to know because we as Catholics have to realize that the Church was given to us by Jesus and he gave us a structure.
- 4:39And it's called the Constitutional Hierarchy of the Church.
- 4:44And that means the Pope is the prime leader, then we have patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, and bishops.
- 4:51And so we're ruled by a bishop in our Diocese of Wichita.
- 4:55So this part one starts with an official document and observations.
- 5:01And it says,
- 5:15And so he gave this document for the priests so that they could preach from the pulpit about this.
- 5:23And so he said,
- 5:39So let me pause there for a minute.
- 5:46That little chapel that he started was where Venerable Leopold used to live.
- 5:50It was his private home.
- 5:51And I was there a couple years ago.
- 5:55And you can literally walk from the cathedral and walk from the chancery to his house.
- 6:00So his house was converted into a place where priests would say Mass.
- 6:05Because Dupont, because he performed 6 to 10,000 miracles, there were people coming to his house in droves.
- 6:13Like some days there would be 300 people visiting him.
- 6:16So the bishop saw the pilgrims coming and a need to establish this as an oratory when he passed away in 1876.
- 6:30So this is page 2 in the first section.
- 6:47So the bishop resolved here to make this an official prayer of the Church in his diocese,
- 6:53which is very important.
- 6:55When devotions come, they have to be proved by the local bishop, who is the one in charge of that.
- 7:01And he usually gets a committee of theologians and priests to say yes or no.
- 7:08Is this devotion actually from God or is it not?
- 7:12So what he did is he established three measures.
- 7:17The first one, that there shall be established unto her as a confraternity of the Holy Face.
- 7:22And so this was done in 1884.
- 7:24And so we'll talk about that next time, I hope, how in 1885,
- 7:30the man who was in charge of this confraternity, who was the chapter of the Dean of Canons,
- 7:37Father Janvier, was one who would petition the Holy Father the next year in 1885 to make it an arch confraternity.
- 7:46So we'll talk about that some other time.
- 7:54So whenever a confraternity is established or an arch confraternity, it needs to have statutes.
- 7:59What do we do? What are our goals?
- 8:02And so we'll look at that over time.
- 8:04And thirdly, that the said confraternity or association being thus canonically established
- 8:09shall enjoy all the indulgences and other spiritual graces, etc., etc., etc.
- 8:14So he signed this in 1884 on the 25th day of the month of October.
- 8:22So this is an important way to start a devotion, is to see that it has the check marks for canon law.
- 8:29So next time we'll talk about the brief of the Holy Father according to special indulgences to the confraternity of the Holy Face.
- 8:36So you're going to see documents going back and forth between the Archbishop and the Holy Father,
- 8:41who at the time was Leo XIII.
- 8:45Until next time, we'll look at this again.
- 8:48Bravo.
- 8:50One of the things that I find so interesting about it is it took a long time to get it established.
- 9:01And Jesus was appearing to Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre and asking her to continue to work
- 9:07and to try to get the devotion out there.
- 9:11And she passed away, and same with Leo de Pont.
- 9:15They struggled for a long time to get it established.
- 9:20So just a word on that, if you will.
- 9:23Yeah, I will. So just to get historical facts together.
- 9:28So Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre passed away in 1848,
- 9:34and Leo de Pont was talking to her for the years that she received the devotion from Jesus to the Holy Face,
- 9:42from 1843 to 1848.
- 9:44And so Sister was silenced by the Archbishop of Tours at that time, and she was obedient.
- 9:50But God had different plans.
- 9:52So her work was put into the archives of the cathedral,
- 9:56and de Pont then promoted this devotion for the next two to three decades.
- 10:02So from 1848 to 1876 is when he died, so do the math.
- 10:08And what he did is he prayed the prayer since Sister had to be silent.
- 10:15And on another point too, Our Lady also began to appear at La Salette,
- 10:21and she was continuing this devotion within a few days after Sister Marie de Saint-Pierre was told to be quiet.
- 10:27And so I was told by Dr. Horvat, who runs Tradition in Action in California.
- 10:32She used to be in Kansas City.
- 10:34She has friends who have gone to the archives in the Vatican, and they've looked at La Salette.
- 10:39There's files and files of revelations that haven't been given to the public yet.
- 10:43So there's some really interesting things in those files that I hope someday will come to light,
- 10:48because Our Blessed Virgin Mary is our Mother.
- 10:51She wants to help us along the way of holiness.
- 10:53So going back to Tours, we had de Pont promoting this devotion for, as I said, two or three decades,
- 11:00and there were 6,000 to 10,000 certified miracles during that time.
- 11:04So God had other plans.
- 11:05And so a few archbishops came and went, and finally this archbishop here who wrote this letter
- 11:11saw the value of this devotion.
- 11:13He brought those secret revelations from the archives out to the public.
- 11:18He put them in front of some Benedictines of Solem.
- 11:22They were dogmatic theologians, and they said to the bishop,
- 11:25these are great, there's nothing wrong with them.
- 11:27And so that's when this devotion became official.
- 11:30So it's like building a cathedral.
- 11:32Back in medieval times, you would take centuries to build one,
- 11:36because you would pour the basement, and then families would work with their sweat and blood
- 11:44and give money to build these churches.
- 11:46And that's what happens is these beautiful monuments take such a long time to build,
- 11:50and so God's the mastermind behind these projects.
- 11:53So this Arch Confraternity, I'm trying to go through this manual very slowly
- 11:58to show you that this has the slow underpinnings that are necessary to make a canonical devotion.
- 12:06So if that makes any sense.
- 12:07I don't know if you have any questions about that.
- 12:10The overwhelming amount of miracles.
- 12:13Could you just shed some light on that process?
- 12:17I read Leo de Pont's book, and essentially he had an image that had been touched
- 12:25of the Holy Face to the Holy Face, and he had an oil lamp that was always burning,
- 12:31and he used the oil, the prayers and the oil.
- 12:36And if I remember right, part of what got the devotion moving forward
- 12:40was the healing of a priest that had been a friend to one of the bishops or something like that.
- 12:46That's one of the miracles that I always forget to talk about.
- 12:50Yeah, so in 1849, there was a miracle that happened in Rome.
- 12:55So the Val Veronica is in Rome, it's in St. Peter's Basilica,
- 12:59and it's on one of the four major pillars that hold up the cupola.
- 13:04And so it's on the second level of a pillar, and the Val Veronica is housed with two other relics,
- 13:09the Spear of Longinus that pierced the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
- 13:12and a large part of the True Cross.
- 13:17So the Freemasons had made an attempt twice on the life of Pope Blessed Pius IX in 1849,
- 13:25and so the Pope exiled himself to Gaeta to protect himself from these enemies,
- 13:30and he commanded all the churches of Rome to make public reparation.
- 13:35So the canons of St. Peter's decided to take the Val from that niche,
- 13:40no one can see it from the floor, it's hidden, out publicly for three days,
- 13:44which was unheard of.
- 13:46It was very rare that they would take it out for any length of time.
- 13:50In the medieval times, the only way that someone could get this Val out,
- 13:54there were six patriarchal families, each of them had a key,
- 13:58and all six keys had to be there in order to open this from the vault.
- 14:02And each of the persons that was holding the key was surrounded by 20 guards.
- 14:08So this relic has such great value, we underestimate its value today.
- 14:12But what happened on the third day, for three hours,
- 14:18the Val, which was covered by a very thin piece of silk or linen
- 14:23to protect it from the elements,
- 14:26that blank piece of fabric began to look like a movie picture,
- 14:30and there was a light coming from it.
- 14:33And we have to remember, the first movie film,
- 14:36the motion picture, was later in that century,
- 14:41in the last part of the 1800s,
- 14:42who was the first person to be filmed on camera?
- 14:45Pope Leo XIII.
- 14:47And so there's no coincidences that in Rome,
- 14:51this miracle happened decades of a motion picture
- 14:55before we had real motion pictures.
- 14:57So for those movie people and photographers,
- 14:59this is good trivia for you all to know.
- 15:02But nonetheless, when this miracle was happening for three years,
- 15:05the Canons thought it was a mirage,
- 15:08so they asked the notary of the Vatican to look at it.
- 15:11He notified it. He certified it.
- 15:13And they rang the bells, and the Romans saw what was happening,
- 15:16and for three hours they were oohing and aahing.
- 15:18It was a talk of Rome for months.
- 15:21So artists drew what they saw,
- 15:24and they began to engrave these
- 15:26and touch these copies to the Val,
- 15:29the Spirit of Longinus, and the Holy Cross,
- 15:32and there was a wax seal on one of them,
- 15:35a red wax seal from the cardinal, and then a stamp in blue,
- 15:38said gratis.
- 15:39And there's other different types of stamps,
- 15:41but these got sent out all over Europe,
- 15:43and one got into the hands of Venerable Leo Pont
- 15:45through the Carmelite of Tours monastery,
- 15:48and he put it in his drawing room.
- 15:51And he had an oil lamp burning day and night,
- 15:54and so people would come to him for cures.
- 15:57And one of the third cures was a priest
- 15:59that was a friend of a bishop.
- 16:01And I don't remember the whole story, but the first cure,
- 16:05this lady had a pain in her eyes for months,
- 16:08and they knelt down and prayed the Litany of the Holy Face
- 16:10and some other prayers.
- 16:12The pont said, take some of this oil, rub it on your eyes,
- 16:14and she was cured instantly.
- 16:15And then soon after that, a high school boy came in in crutches.
- 16:18They did the same thing. He left without crutches.
- 16:20And so this happened on and on and on for 6,000 to 10,000 miracles
- 16:24in the course of about 30 years.
- 16:26Now, let me put that amount of miracles into context.
- 16:31Venerable Leo Pont was only a layman.
- 16:34And one of my favorite wonder workers of all time
- 16:37is St. Vincent Ferrer, and he was a priest.
- 16:41And he would preach in the open air in the 13th century.
- 16:45He had lots of gifts, the gift of tongues,
- 16:48where his voice would be translated into the language
- 16:50or the dialect of the people hearing him.
- 16:52And there was a procession of 10,000 penitents
- 16:56who would follow him throughout Europe.
- 16:59And so there was a person called the Miracle Bell Carrier
- 17:01who would ring the bell about three times a day after each miracle.
- 17:05And so people knew that he was a saint.
- 17:09But yeah, Venerable Leo Pont has performed just as many miracles
- 17:11as this priest who, St. Vincent Ferrer, is so popular.
- 17:17And so the pont has been put into the secret archives
- 17:21as far as the canonization process is going.
- 17:24And during the canonization process,
- 17:27the devil's advocate said,
- 17:29what is this man going through the process of canonization?
- 17:32He owned a slave.
- 17:33Well, what happened, he grew up in Martinique,
- 17:37and it was a French colony, and French slavery was a lot different
- 17:41than the slavery that we know in the Americas.
- 17:45So it was a lot more benign.
- 17:47And this slave wanted to go live with him in Tours
- 17:50because she was a servant.
- 17:52So I think that someday, hopefully in my lifetime,
- 17:56de Pont will become declared as a saint at our altars.
- 18:00So I'll stop talking.
- 18:02It's so interesting.
- 18:04Is it safe to assume that that's a lot of miracles
- 18:09under anyone's standards?
- 18:14But most of the miracles that we hear about in modern day
- 18:18happen so long ago when Christendom
- 18:21was the standard government of most states of the world,
- 18:26and faith was abundant in the world.
- 18:30Am I wrong to think that one of the reasons
- 18:34we don't see miracles manifested,
- 18:37hardly at all in modern society,
- 18:40is because we now live in a godless society.
- 18:44I was just in Quebec City in Montreal,
- 18:48in North America, one of the earliest places
- 18:51of Catholic culture and Catholic faith.
- 18:54Church after church abandoned,
- 18:57just left alone with graffiti, nonbelievers.
- 19:03Almost everybody I came in contact with
- 19:05either used to be Catholic or don't practice.
- 19:09In a godless society is that we have a lack of miracles
- 19:14because of that.
- 19:16Is that safe to say?
- 19:17Yeah, it's safe to say for many reasons.
- 19:19One is we don't have enough generosity from people
- 19:22who are called to be saints today,
- 19:24so God doesn't give us miracles.
- 19:27The greatest example I like to use in my opinion
- 19:30is Saint Joseph Cupertino.
- 19:32He would fly all over the place.
- 19:34One priest friend of mine told me,
- 19:35that's because the people that lived around him
- 19:37were so generous to God and they believed.
- 19:40I believe it was Blessed Elect Archbishop Fulton Sheen
- 19:43used to talk about how every 400 years
- 19:46the Church would go through the cycle of birth,
- 19:51death, passion, death, resurrection.
- 19:54So we're at the end of a 400-year cycle,
- 19:57it seems like, because we're going through the passion.
- 19:59And so God takes away the miracles in the Church
- 20:03because the Church is the mystical body of Christ.
- 20:06Christ is the head where the body is,
- 20:08so where the head has gone, the body must follow.
- 20:12So when the passion happened,
- 20:14there weren't very many miracles,
- 20:16and so there's not very many miracles.
- 20:18But one of the promises in this devotion
- 20:21is that there would be many miracles.
- 20:24And I need to start recording the miracles
- 20:28that are happening all over the world
- 20:30because people are enrolled in this arch confraternity.
- 20:32One of them is Sister Wilhelmina.
- 20:35She was enrolled in this confraternity back in 1973
- 20:39with the confraternity in the Carmel of Dallas,
- 20:42and I happened to give her communion
- 20:44for the last six years of her life.
- 20:46Sister Wilhelmina started the Benedictines of Mary,
- 20:48well, she helped start it, and these nuns,
- 20:51their abbey, their mother house is located in Gower, Missouri,
- 20:55and I buried her in the Missouri mud.
- 20:58And I was the deacon at her solemn requiem mass,
- 21:01and I saw her buried.
- 21:03Well, they took out her body because they wanted to put her
- 21:05underneath one of their altars, and they found her body
- 21:07and corrupt. And the bishop, Bishop Johnston,
- 21:11did an investigation with scientists, and they,
- 21:14under oath, swore that there's no way
- 21:17that this can explain that she is incorrupt
- 21:19because the material that was used for her habit
- 21:22was the same material used to line the coffin.
- 21:25Her habit was intact, but the material
- 21:29in the coffin was disintegrated because the Missouri mud
- 21:31is very good at decomposition.
- 21:33So that's just one of many miracles that I've seen in my whole life
- 21:37because of this devotion to the Holy Face.
- 21:40So I hope that this devotion will bring about
- 21:43the Church's resurrection someday,
- 21:46and maybe that'll be the triumph of the Immaculate Heart,
- 21:48the triumph of the Sacred Heart, and the triumph of the Church
- 21:50because one of the devotions within the Archconfraternity
- 21:53is called the Chaplet of the Holy Face,
- 21:57which meditates on the five senses of Jesus during His Passion,
- 22:03and the object of the chaplet
- 22:05is for the triumph of the Catholic Church.
- 22:07So think about it. Go back to Calvary.
- 22:10Mary was there. The people were there
- 22:13that were close to Jesus.
- 22:15They were praying, and there was blasphemy happening,
- 22:18and they were doing reparation. And then after Jesus died,
- 22:21what happened? Lots of miracles happened.
- 22:23For example, the sun didn't shine for three hours,
- 22:27and people were rising from their graves.
- 22:30So I'm no prophet,
- 22:34but I think that we're on the cusp of a change.
- 22:37And so as it gets worse, we know that we're getting closer
- 22:39to that resurrection.
- 22:42Excuse me, yeah, the resurrection of Jesus,
- 22:45the death and the resurrection.
- 22:47Wonderful. Well, this is kind of show-and-tell for me
- 22:50because I'm enrolled in the Archconfraternity,
- 22:53which is a wonderful thing. It was a little bit of a struggle,
- 22:56kind of like to get the devotion going,
- 22:58because it actually is out of Tours France,
- 23:01and I had applied for it and sent in for it
- 23:04and didn't hear anything for a really long time.
- 23:06And then I finally did hear, and I got my certificate
- 23:09but didn't have the right name on it.
- 23:11And I was very worried that I took forever to get the certificate.
- 23:16Now if I need to get it changed, it's going to take a long time.
- 23:19But I told them, hey, we got the wrong name,
- 23:21and they changed it immediately. So this is my certificate,
- 23:25which I love St. Therese of Lisieux,
- 23:28so when you were talking about St. Therese of Lisieux
- 23:30being one of the first members, it's dear to my heart.
- 23:35And then the other little show-and-tell item,
- 23:37we'll get there in the manual, but I wanted to show these little...
- 23:41I'll let you talk about it, actually, and show that.
- 23:45These are Hot Off the Presses by Mary Hahn,
- 23:48Holy Face Gifts on Etsy.
- 23:50We'll put a link in the notes so that you can get these.
- 23:56Yeah, it's been an act of Congress
- 23:58to try to get any medals in this devotion out that are proper.
- 24:03There's always something that seems to go wrong,
- 24:05and that's why Jesus told Sister Mary and St. Peter
- 24:09that the devil will do anything he can
- 24:10to stop this devotion at its inception.
- 24:13And so that means when it first came out,
- 24:15but we're going through another inception, we're going through a renewal.
- 24:19So this is a medal that Mary Hahn has done,
- 24:22and I'm a very thorough judge on these,
- 24:25and she has done a great job on something here.
- 24:29And just to show you how official that is,
- 24:32I don't know if the camera can see this,
- 24:34but on page 83, all of you that have manuals,
- 24:38you go study that.
- 24:39This is the official symbol of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face,
- 24:43and it has a double cross.
- 24:47So does anyone know why that is such?
- 24:50I'll tell you if you don't have a clue.
- 24:53It's because Tours is an archdiocese.
- 24:57Now it's a very small diocese,
- 24:59but I talked to a canon from there
- 25:01who grew up there, Canon Monroe,
- 25:03in the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.
- 25:07He said it's a historical diocese
- 25:09because it has so many bishop saints.
- 25:13St. Martin of Tours is one of them, and St. Gatien is another.
- 25:16And an archdiocese has a cross with an extra bar.
- 25:21Now does anyone know,
- 25:22is there a cross that has three bars,
- 25:24and who that would be for?
- 25:26It would have to be Rome.
- 25:27Correct. So whenever you see in paintings of popes,
- 25:34sometimes they'll be holding a cross
- 25:36that will have triple bars to show that that is the highest C,
- 25:40which is called the Holy C in Rome.
- 25:44Very nice. Wonderful.
- 25:47Well, I think that's all I have.
- 25:49That's a lot right there to unpack and think about.
- 25:53That's beautiful, beautiful.
- 25:55Thank you, Father.
