- 2:15Murder. What's the matter? What is it another case for that's Detective.
- 2:37Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all manhunters, the detective
- 2:40who's ability at solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick
- 2:45Carter, Master Detective, The Night's Curious Adventure, State's Prison Evidence, Nick
- 2:52Cotter and the Mystery of the Midnight Robbery. Why could you let me have
- 3:07a line? Certainly here you are swell night, isn't he? Indeed,
- 3:12it's a pleasure to walk on a night like this. Yeah, well thanks,
- 3:16I don't know. Good night. Yes, even in the big city
- 3:22like this, stars and justice. I wonder what's wrong with her? I
- 3:30beg your pardon. But is there anything I can do? I can I
- 3:32help you? Is something wrong? Murder? Who is it? My uncle?
- 3:39When did it happen? I don't know? Well? Where is he?
- 3:44Like in this big house right here? Yes? What's off? You
- 3:50shouldn't be out here in your night clothes, Chili, Come let me take
- 3:53it back to the house. Come on back to the house. Did you
- 3:59call police? No? I just saw him lying there in a pool of
- 4:04blood. Then I came out here to get help. Well, I'm Nick
- 4:10Carter, the detective. I'll be glad to help you if I can.
- 4:13How careful going up the steps? Okay, here we are. Now show
- 4:19me the library. He's in there. Oh, yes, I see dead?
- 4:30All right? Who found him? The housekeeper? She came in lately,
- 4:36saw a light still on in here. She looked in to see if
- 4:41he needed anything, and so then she called you. Yes, and you
- 4:45are. I'm Eljabo, his niece. I've lived here with him for the
- 4:48last five years since my mother died. I see, has anything been touched
- 4:54since the body was found? No, nobody's been in here at all.
- 4:58Good m shot through the head, close brained, looks as if he did
- 5:06it himself. No, no, here's the pistol that was used right beside
- 5:12him. Did you hear the shot? No? I sleep at the opposite
- 5:16end of the house. Oh, mister Carter, please find whoever killed my
- 5:19uncle? What makes you think he didn't kill himself. She wouldn't do a
- 5:24thing like that. I know it. Well, that's hardly evidence, miss
- 5:26Ella. Did you see this note? No? I know. Your uncle
- 5:30apparently left it propped up here in his desk, addressed to missus Sarah jar
- 5:34Bo, seven Dinner Street, City. You know what? Never heard of
- 5:40her? What does it say? Let's see, My dear madam, you've
- 5:44been a widow in fact ever since the hour following our marriage. But before
- 5:47daybreaks will be a widowing name. Also for I shall be dead. I've
- 5:51at last learned the truth. The one who told me right after our wedding
- 5:55ceremony that you were everything evil has at last confessed that you were really as
- 5:59good as I do you to be. It's too late for me to ask
- 6:01you to forgive me for the great wrong I have done you, so I'm
- 6:03taking this way of making quite amends. I can the upper drawer of my
- 6:09desk is my will sleaves everything to you, the repentant husband, enos Rbul.
- 6:15That's a remarkable document. Did you know anything about your uncle ever having
- 6:17been married? No, I never heard that before. Well, that note
- 6:21would seem to prove it was suicide. I know better. May I see
- 6:26that note? Of course? Here? I knew it, mister Carter.
- 6:30My uncle didn't kill himself, and he didn't write this note either. Isn't
- 6:34that your uncle's handwriting? It looks very much like it, but he didn't
- 6:38write it. Uncle didn't use this kind of pen. What do you mean?
- 6:41Uncle anes was very proud of his handwriting, and he never used anything
- 6:45but a special type of old fashioned steel tenning point. He has a very
- 6:48fine point. I see. Yes, this note was undroughtedly written with a
- 6:55stub point. Another thing, mister Carter, Uncle never wrote anywhere except at
- 6:58his desk here, and desk has been lot since yesterday morning. And I
- 7:01have the key. How long have you had it? I bowed it yesterday
- 7:04morning because I had some letters to write, and I've had it ever since.
- 7:08Was there another key to this desk? No? Uncle would never write
- 7:11anywhere else. You're quite a convincing detective, miss Ella. And if you're
- 7:15right, this can't be suicide in spite of the other evidence. I know
- 7:19I am right. Uncle would never have taken his own life. I believe
- 7:23you, and I'm just curious enough about this to do a little investigating myself.
- 7:27If I'm as good a detective as you are, I'll find your uncle's
- 7:30murderer in short order. You think this Missus Sarah Blake is the woman you
- 7:43want me, I'm not sure, Betsy. But when the maid told me
- 7:45that she never heard of Missus Sarah's Jarboul, but that Missus Sarah Blake lives
- 7:47here, I thought I better talk to her. She might be Missus Jarboul
- 7:50using her maiden name. Here she comes. Now you wish to speak to
- 7:55me, I'm looking for Missus sarah's Arboul. You know her, I do.
- 8:01I am Sarah Charbol. You are right. My name is Bill Peters.
- 8:03I'm a reporter. I'm writing a story on the sudden death of your
- 8:07husband, Eno Shiabo, the poor man. He died to make up to
- 8:13me for my years of heartbreak. Yes, I saw the note he left.
- 8:16Would you please tell me what had happened? Well? I met him
- 8:20one summer on the coast of Maine. We were married in the fall.
- 8:24He took a train for Boston. Along the way, he went into the
- 8:26smoking car to smoke a cigar. I never saw him again. My,
- 8:31that's terrible. Why didn't he come back? I only know that when the
- 8:37train reached the station, a messenger gave me five hundred dollars and a note.
- 8:41It said that he had learned I was not a good woman, that
- 8:46I should never see him again. But didn't you try to clear it up?
- 8:48No, if he believed it, I would never seek to persuade him.
- 8:52Otherwise, I've worked as a governess ever since. I see well,
- 8:56Thank you very much, missus Shabbo, come along. Goodbye, missus Yarbro.
- 9:01I hope you'll be happy now. Thank you and goodbye. She certainly
- 9:09got a tough brace, o passy. I was prepared to doubt everything she
- 9:13told me, but so I am inclined to believe her story, even if
- 9:15it does spoil my theory that she's part of an elaborate put up job.
- 9:18Which way are you going from here? I think I want me you let
- 9:22me have a life as far here you are. Thanks nice today, isn't
- 9:26yes, very pleasant? Thanks so long, So long, we'll come along.
- 9:33Wait a minute, I'd met that man somewhere before he asked me for
- 9:37I like just that same way. I wasn't. Of course, it was
- 9:41outside Jarbo's house last night, right after the murder. You mean you think
- 9:45he Watch a minute. I want to see if he yes, he's going
- 9:50into the house we just left right If he and missus Garbo know each other,
- 9:52the chances are her story is a pony. But I know what I
- 9:56know, Patty. But this changes things, Patsy. I want you to
- 9:58find out what you can about all Leo Sharbo's past, find out about that
- 10:01marriage, if ever was one. But first call Scubby and tell him to
- 10:03get here right away. Okay, that man leaves before Scubby gets here,
- 10:07I'll follow myself otherwise Scubby can tail him. But I've got to know where
- 10:09he goes and what he does right now. He's our one positive clue.
- 10:24Is it all right to talking here? Nick? The lobby of the Big
- 10:28hotel is probably the safest place in the world. Talking Scubby, We'll let
- 10:31you find out well. I followed him over to saloon over on Third Avenue.
- 10:35There was a fellow waiting there for him. I tried to hear what
- 10:37they talked about, but all I could get was the name Jarboul. Yeah,
- 10:41I heard that several times, I thought so, But just as I
- 10:43was really getting in closed, a couple of playing clothes cops came along and
- 10:46pinched him. Pinched him for well, it seems he broke out of State's
- 10:48prison three days ago. I heard the cops call him Barney McCoy. Barney
- 10:54McCoy, Yeah, jail bird from the state's prison. Pardon me, Scubby.
- 10:58I want to speak to the desk clerk for sure, Nick, But
- 11:01what do you have for o' clerk? I'd like to speak to the governor.
- 11:03Sweet please, Yes, what's carter? Use booth? No too out
- 11:05over there for Oh Nick, what in the world you want to talk to
- 11:07the governor for? Just haven't remember Scubby stopping at this very hotel for a
- 11:11few days I wanted to do meet Hello, mister Secreday. Well, this
- 11:16is Nick Carter. I'd like to speak to the governor a moment about me.
- 11:18Thank you, hello, Governor. This is Nick Carter. Fine,
- 11:24thanks, Governor. I want to go to State's prison. Oh no,
- 11:28not as a visitor. I want to go as a convy. Nick,
- 11:31are you not snow? I mean it? You can spare me five minutes.
- 11:33I think I can convince you. Thanks. I'll be right up.
- 11:48Hello. I asked you to meet me here at my office because I'm going
- 11:50to be out of town for a few days and I want to have everything
- 11:52straight before I leave. Has anything further happened? Nothing, mister Carter,
- 11:58except that missus Jabo has installed herself in the house as its mistress. She's
- 12:03very unpleasant to me. I know she'd like me to leave. You stay
- 12:05right there. Did the will leave anything to you? No, mister Carter,
- 12:09everything went to her. I can't understand it. I can, and
- 12:13will is forged. But the will is an uncle's handwriting, and both the
- 12:18witnesses to the will have identified their saying it just as genuine, and the
- 12:20will was found where the note said it would be. Nevertheless, I'm convinced
- 12:24the will's are fake. Betsy. What did you find Outau and Sarah Blake
- 12:28were married? Right enough? I found the regular little church on the south
- 12:31side. Sarah really is his wife or his will doesn't make sense, and
- 12:37neither does a suicide note was Yarbou didn't write. Maybe he did kill himself
- 12:41after all, mister Carter, maybe he just forgot about me. And I
- 12:45don't believe it. Ella, I don't either, And Ella, I'm going
- 12:48to prove I'm right, even if I even if I have to go to
- 12:52jail, I'll do it. Oh you're the new man. Yeah? What
- 13:03what's your name? Max Herbert? Where were born? Papolo? New York?
- 13:07Hold are in thirty three? Nationality? American? Married? Nope?
- 13:15Crime house breaking? Very well. The guard will take you to the photographers
- 13:20and then to the life. No, fellow, you've been here three days.
- 13:33How do you like working in this shoe shop? I don't like it?
- 13:35Not cut up for it? What are you in for? Second story
- 13:39job? What I got you for it? Cracking is safe? Miss four
- 13:43of us? Two of them got away, Me and McCoy was nailed.
- 13:48Cole McCoy. Hey, it wouldn't mean Bonnie McCoy, would you? Yeah?
- 13:54Yeah? You know him? Sure? Knowing? Well? Great guy?
- 13:56Sure is you know his wife? Yeah, there's a darn smart woman.
- 14:03Eddie is Addie. Yeah? I thought her name of Sarah. Oh
- 14:07No, his wife's Eddie. Sarah was assistant and that looks so much alike
- 14:11you couldn't tell one from the other. Yeah, well what became of Sarah?
- 14:15No, I no know. She married some rich guy for his money,
- 14:18but enough to flat. I don't know what happened after that. Paddy's
- 14:20still in town waiting for Mack to get on. He he did break out
- 14:24a few days ago. He just caught him and brought him back here.
- 14:28Yeah, and then they got him on the rock pile for trying to escape.
- 14:31Hey, cut out that talking, you guys, get back to work.
- 14:33Okay, Okay, So Bonnie and mc car is on the rock pile
- 14:37now, I rather think i'd like to be transferred to the rock pile myself.
- 14:56Hey, Bonnie, Yeah, hello, you've known me now for almost
- 15:00two weeks. Yeah, so what you know? I wouldn't give you a
- 15:03bump stir it, don't say what are you leaving up too? Nice?
- 15:07I'm working on a way to get out of here before I come up here.
- 15:11I heard you on the level. Like to let you in on it.
- 15:16Where did you ever hear of me outside this place? I'm a big
- 15:18town girl named Sarah. Tell me about you, Bud. You married her
- 15:22sister Eddie. You know Sarah sure about five six years ago. I haven't
- 15:28seen it since, so Sarah's in Europe. Now, when are you're planning
- 15:33on getting out of here? As soon as I get the necessary people lined
- 15:37up. If I had some dough, we could get out of here tomorrow.
- 15:41How much do you need? Have two hundred to start with? Okay,
- 15:45I'll have it for you tomorrow. Okay, Max, you get that
- 15:48stuff and we'll be out of here in two days. All right, you
- 16:02get five minutes to talk. Hey, Nick, why don't scubby I'm ex
- 16:06Herbert in here. Oh I'm sorry. I should have remembered. How in
- 16:08the world did you ever get in this place? The governor fixed it so
- 16:11that I was caught red handed rubbing the home of a friend of his.
- 16:15When they caught me, I had the family silver in one hand, of
- 16:17the family jewels in the other. It's easy. And now he arrange to
- 16:21me transferred to the gang where McCoy's working. Or have you found anything?
- 16:23Yes, and it's all circumstantial. But Bonnie McCoy and I are breaking out
- 16:27of here day after tomorrow, and I'm hoping to get some poof Then are
- 16:30you sure you're getting out of here? Yes? One of the keepers is
- 16:33working with us. I think this same keeper fixed McCoy's get away last time,
- 16:37and I also think from what I've heard that he may have helped in
- 16:41Jarbou's murderer. Yeah, I've learned positively that it was absent from the prison
- 16:44on leave that day. But isn't there danger if you're getting hurt if you
- 16:47try to break out of here? Of course there is. I have to
- 16:48take that chance. I've got to stick to McCoy. Don't worry, Scubby,
- 16:53I'll be all right. I hope we all set, McCoy all set,
- 17:08everything's fixed good. You see that delivery truck over there, Max,
- 17:12Yeah, well that's going to break down. I'm gonna tries to start.
- 17:15I get it. We don't have to help it get out of the yard
- 17:18here, right, listen, I was trying to start it. Now they
- 17:22got it, all said Shure. Mike's with us all the way, same
- 17:26as before. Hey, you were there. That's give us a hand with
- 17:30this truck. Okay, what's the matter. Motor will start. Have to
- 17:36give him a push, you do, get ahold of hand, Give him
- 17:37a start, okay, Mike, rest you guys get back to work,
- 17:41all right, get your shoulder behind it, Max, Okay, let's go
- 17:44all right? He again, Hey once more, come on, get it
- 17:48gone we go he So there's the motor starts. Jump on the truck,
- 17:53right, I got you. Okay yet there climb, I mean get down
- 18:00so I can't see you. Look. Bridge over the railroad tracks is just
- 18:03ahead. When we get over the tracks, be ready to jump you right
- 18:07with you? All right? Now, come on right behind your bonnie.
- 18:15Jump on the tenor of that engine. Blow us. No, okay,
- 18:22you all right, my coy. Yeah, come on, engineer, give
- 18:26her all the steam your guts. Don't stop to talk, you fireman.
- 18:30Feed the cold work. I don't want to use this gun unless I have
- 18:33to. Watch out maxim the outside wall of the prisoners just ahead. You're
- 18:37gonna duck. There's gonna be super right, my gooy All okay, so
- 18:41far there, Conas watch it look at poor Yeah. Well we're out of
- 18:52jail now and for good. It's good to see you back in your office
- 19:08again, mister Carr. It's good to be back here. I tell me,
- 19:11have you learned anything interesting since I list sawyer? I think so,
- 19:15mister Carter. Let's have it a few months ago, our housekeeper spent about
- 19:18a month visiting her son in California. Before she went, she put an
- 19:22ad in the paper for a temporary housekeeper. Several women answered the ad,
- 19:26and Missus Martin was given the job. She had light brown hair and wore
- 19:30dark glasses. I disliked her on Sidon, I'm sure she disliked me.
- 19:34When our housekeeper returned this, Missus Martin left and I never saw her again
- 19:38until the day my uncle was buried. And what do you mean? On
- 19:42that day she presented herself as my uncle's widow, your uncle's widow. Yes,
- 19:47mister Carter. When she first came to live in the house after the
- 19:51funeral, I thought there was something very familiar about her. But not until
- 19:53a few days ago did I suddenly realize that Missus jarbeaut was Missus Martin,
- 19:59with black, hairy instead of brown, and without her dark glasses. Ellock,
- 20:02I just swear to that. No, But some of her little mannerisms,
- 20:04certain tricks of speech, a funny way of walking, all make me
- 20:08positive that explains the mystery of how the fake will was forged. While Missus
- 20:12Martin was substituting for the housekeeper, she could have found out about the will,
- 20:15taken it out, had a new one forged, and then returned it.
- 20:18The night your uncle was murdered. The forced will was substituted for the
- 20:22original one on the desk drawer by using a duplicate key that had been prepared
- 20:25in advance. And it might interest you Nick to know that when Ella told
- 20:26me this the other day, I checked at the house where we first met
- 20:30Missus Jarbau. The woman there told me that Missus Jabau was away in a
- 20:33visit during the month that Missus Martin took the place of Ella's housekeeper. Good
- 20:37work. That settles at Betsy. Just a minute, mister Carter. There's
- 20:40another thing. You better know something else, Yes, mister Carter. Last
- 20:44evening a strange man came to the house. He and Missus Jabo were apparently
- 20:48old friends, because she called him leg Barney McCoy. She took him up
- 20:52to her room, where I heard them talking for a long time. I
- 20:56tried to hear what they were saying, but couldn't get close enough. But
- 20:59I did hear or him say it was time to get that girl out of
- 21:03the way for good. And then Missus Jarbou said that now that Mac was
- 21:07back. It was time to wind up the job. Well, Ella,
- 21:11if everything goes as I hope it will, we'll be the ones to wind
- 21:12up the job, not Missus Jarbou. Anything else you want me to do,
- 21:17Yes, make me aware of your home to morning at eleven o'clock we'll
- 21:19make our final arrangements. Then in the meantime, sit tight and keep your
- 21:23ears and eyes open, mister Carter, mister Carter, Yes, come into
- 21:41the living room here we can talk better. Sure, there's no one around,
- 21:45not now. That man Mac was here earlier, but he left quite
- 21:48a while ago. Missus Jarbou has gone up to her room. We can
- 21:52talk safely here, all right. Don't turn on my light. Maybe seen
- 22:00we can talk just as well in the dark. Whatever you say now,
- 22:03tell me, does Missus Garbou know you've ever seen this man Mac. No,
- 22:07I've kept out of the way whenever he's been around. Good. Do
- 22:11you know what he came here for this evening? There was talk about chloroform
- 22:15and poison, and then she told him the lawyer for the estate was here
- 22:19this afternoon and said that she would be in full legal possession of the estate
- 22:23in another few days. I see and then he said that if that was
- 22:26the case, it was the time to act before it was too late.
- 22:30Well, it's time for us to act too. I think we'd better quiet.
- 22:37Somebody's unlocking the door through which we came. Maybe they won't come in
- 22:40here. Who's in this room? I can't say in the dark, but
- 22:52I know you're there. Who's there? O? Are you none of your
- 23:00business? Speak up rawshooting? If you do, you'll never left to see
- 23:03another ding going on in here? Why isn't the light of this is javu?
- 23:07Hella? What are you? Bonny croi? You Max? Herbert?
- 23:10By all this? Holy? What are you doing here? Oh? You
- 23:14see Bonnie? Yeah, yeah, he's here because he loves me. Don't
- 23:18you know this man? As an ex convict, you ought to be serving
- 23:21a sentence in state's prison right now. Yes, I know that. That's
- 23:25why we had to meet like this, Bonnie? Is this true? Ella?
- 23:29Yes, missus, it is. Huh. Look here you you interviewed
- 23:32me a couple of weeks ago, said you were writing a store in your
- 23:34paper. You said then your name was Peters. Now you say it's Herbert.
- 23:38Well, my real name is Herbert Peters. Man. You see I
- 23:41had you. What are you doing here? I'm a night watchman on duty
- 23:45in this neighborhood. I saw this man come in here and followed him,
- 23:49recognized him as a suspicious character. Both lying. Get out of here,
- 23:52both of you immediately, and as for you, Ella, get upstairs at
- 23:56once. I'll deal with you later. That's all thanks I get for trying
- 24:00to protect your place against thieves. I will get out. Come on you
- 24:03go ahead, Bonnie, I'm coming good night, and see that you never
- 24:08come back, either of you and Max. Yeah, there's that story about
- 24:19you and the girls street. Why sure, Bonnie, wasn't your story on
- 24:25the level? Well tell you the truth. I was going to see if
- 24:29I could find a few things I could swipe and flat broke. You haven't
- 24:34got a few books on your heavy cheer, Bonnie. I can let you
- 24:37have a ten spot here. Geez, thanks pal. I won't forget you
- 24:42for this. Forget it. Sure we're lucky to get out of there,
- 24:47too easy. I thought the old name was going to have his pinch.
- 24:49You're under arrest bost of you, so don't try. You may go my
- 24:59army. You made me missing? Oh I got you anyway. You won't
- 25:03get away. You're going back to state's prison again, mister Max Herbert.
- 25:07You know my name, do yeah? I sure do, and I know
- 25:08yours Ben Lyon, But you know me, let me look at you gladly
- 25:15come over on the street line right, you know? Now? Well,
- 25:18Nick Carter, well I'll be well, gosh, I'm sorry, mister Carter,
- 25:22but a woman just called the station said she'd passed two escape confence in
- 25:26front of her house, and if we hurry, we could pick them up,
- 25:29even give us the names too. So now, Ben, listen to
- 25:32me. I'm on the trail of something big. Have a lieutenant and eight
- 25:33men meet me at twelve o'clock tomorrow night at the back of the yard bow
- 25:37place across the street where they won't be seen. Okay, be sure to
- 25:40tell them not to fail me, because I expect to capture the murderers of
- 25:42Venus your boat. All the men posted as we agreed, Scubby, Yes,
- 25:59Nick, outside and inside the house. They have orders to let anybody
- 26:02come up here and to let nobody go downstairs again. And we're ready for
- 26:06the finale in this case that you've got there, Nick, it's a new
- 26:08type of microphone, Patsy. I've attach it to the wall between this room
- 26:12and missus Jarbos room. Through the vibration of the wall, it'll pick up
- 26:15whatever is said in her room, and whatever is picked up is amplified so
- 26:19that it's loud enough for us to hear it. The amplifier also has a
- 26:22recording device, which makes a permanent record of the conversation on a wire tape.
- 26:26Gosh, what will they think of next? Quiet? Now listen,
- 26:30I'll turn it on. But I tell you a bond it we can't lose.
- 26:34In a few more days, the whole Jarbos tay will be mine legally,
- 26:37I know, Addy, But can you handle girl for a few days
- 26:41more? That's I can't. We'll give her what we gave the old man.
- 26:44Do we have to? If she's dead? We know she ain't gonna
- 26:45bother us better? And what the devil's that? How do I know?
- 26:52The housekeepers answering it? Hey, somebody's coming up here? Did you tell
- 26:59anybody? Who is anybody here? What are you doing here? That's a
- 27:06fine question to ask me. Come here because you sent for me? Who
- 27:10sent for you? You did? McCoy? You're crazy? I did nothing
- 27:14of the kind. I got your notes this morning it is what come to
- 27:17jarbou House tonight, but not before twelve. Everything okay, very important and
- 27:22it's signed Barney Listen. I never wrote that note. If it didn't,
- 27:26it means trouble for us. Somebody else knows about this business besides us three.
- 27:30You mean we're caught. We ain't caught yet, but we will be
- 27:33if we don't watch our step. Even now, he's afraid of this.
- 27:36I knew I should have kept you to me. Shut up your wretched up
- 27:38in jail yet. Well I'm going to be. I can feel it coming.
- 27:41Don't shut up, Michae. I'll bring you. You did the McCoy,
- 27:45you failed the shot that kills you. Man. I just have still
- 27:47that rye off. That's another of that. Let's go right with you,
- 27:51Nick, I can't wait you long. It hands up both of you.
- 27:57They're no funny business nice. What do you know, McCoy, Not Max,
- 28:02Nick Carr, Nick Connor. You ain't got nothing on us. Nick's
- 28:04got enough on you three to send you to the chair. That's McCoy.
- 28:07We know the whole plot from beginning to end. Tell him what we found
- 28:10out, Nick, What do you mean it means? I know that Sarah
- 28:11married Jarbou, and that's shortly afterwards she died, You, Eddie, her
- 28:15sister married McCoy. When Sarah died, you found her marriage certificate and decided
- 28:19to use her resemblance to her to get the old man's money. McCoy wasn't
- 28:22prison then, but you arranged with the guard Mike here to help McCoy escape.
- 28:26But the time was right then to pay Mike for his trouble. You
- 28:29cut him in on the deal. Then you, Eddie, got that temporary
- 28:33job here was a housekeeper, which was an unexpected break. While you were
- 28:36here, you had the fake will made. Then when all was ready,
- 28:38McCoy escaped as planned. Mike came with him, and between the three of
- 28:42you your chloroformed old Jarbou and then shot him in such a way that it
- 28:45looked like suicide. How do you know it wasn't suicide? A suicide note
- 28:51you left for the old man. Whoever Addy got to forge that whille for
- 28:53it in such an expert job that the witnesses recognized their own Forde signatures a
- 28:57genuine But whoever wrote that sue side note was so clumsy that he wrote it
- 29:02with a blunt pointed fountain pen instead of the sharp pointed steel pen that was
- 29:06the only pen jarbo ever used. That ain't proof, that's guessing. We've
- 29:11got plenty of proof, McCoy. And if that isn't enough to top it
- 29:15all off, the conversation in this room between you three crooks has been recorded
- 29:18in full for the past twenty minutes. And if that isn't practically a confession
- 29:22and good legal evidence in any court, my name isn't Nick Carter. This
- 29:40was another strange experience of Nick Carter, Master detective called State's Prison Evidence or
- 29:45Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Midnight Murder, another of the curious adventures
- 29:48of Nick Carter, which are brought to you regularly at the same time each
- 29:52week by w o R Mutual and Onic. What about our story for next
- 29:56week? Well, next week's story. He started off as a question of
- 30:00who stole the firm's funds, but it ended up by being the very perplexing
- 30:04question of who killed two men and caused the death of a third and not
- 30:07the least puzzling part of the case was to find out who fired the fatal
- 30:11bullet which started off the murders. Isn't that usually the most puzzling part of
- 30:14a murder story. Hell, yes it is. But in this case,
- 30:17the manner was killed was standing by my side in the corner of a large
- 30:19office building, and there was no one around at the time who could have
- 30:22fired the gun that killed him. I'm afraid I'm getting more mixed up all
- 30:26the time. That's exactly how we felt about it. But Nick cleared it
- 30:29all up in spite of everything, and we're going to tell you all about
- 30:32it next week. So long, so long, folks, and so long
- 30:36to you Nick and Patsy. See you next week. In the Strange Adventure
- 30:40You've just heard, Nick Carter was impersonated by Lown Clark, Patsy by Helen
- 30:45Choate, and Scubby by John Kine. Original music was played by Leu White.
- 30:48The entire production was written and directed by Jock McGregor. Next week,
- 31:11at the same time, another curious Experience of Nick Carter entitled an Angle on
- 31:17Murder for Nick Carter and the Mystery of a Good related bullet. This story
- 31:26is a copyrighted feature of Street and Smith Publications, incorporating the return of Nick
- 31:32Carter. Is produced in the studios of wor and It is broadcast over most
- 31:36of these stations every Monday evening at nine thirty Eastern wartime. This is mutual
- 32:01one welcome back. Well, another mystery. I will let legal experts in
- 32:08the audience comment on whether Nick's evidence would have been all valid in nineteen forty
- 32:15three. But this is kind of a typical thing you would see actually,
- 32:21to be honest, and one of the Nick Carter pulp novels. But overall,
- 32:29just a pretty fun, pretty fun story, and in caping with the
- 32:36type of stories I could imagine the you know, I've read some of the
- 32:38Nick Carter pulp stories that have become available online, and I could imagine this
- 32:45is something he would do, you know. And in some ways it's you
- 32:50know, two weeks without any real sort of pay, undercover in a prison.
- 32:57Yeah, that's the type of thing Nick Carter would do. So just
- 33:02just overall a very solid story. Well, we do now turn to some
- 33:07listener comments and feedback, and this comes from Patty who says that my husband
- 33:15Mike has a comment about the latest episode of Nick Carter. He's surprised that
- 33:21you do not mention that mintion Nick Bragg that his guns were were waterproof.
- 33:25His quote is that is not possible, especially for that day and age.
- 33:30The show did not explain where or how Nick Nick's guns were waterproof. The
- 33:35fact that Nick said that he had special guns is even more like the sixties
- 33:38Batman and the whole water tank prison you mentioned at the end of the show.
- 33:44We both thought it was a great episode with all the behind the scenes
- 33:46with the voodoo movie and the and the movie set we enjoyed. We both
- 33:51enjoy the suposed shows. Excuse me, especially Johnny Dollar and Nick Carter.
- 33:55Well, thanks so much, Patty Well. I will often reserve comments because
- 34:07I'm not necessarily a forensic expert, and that's why I love when the audience
- 34:15UH. When people in the audience, you know, we'll call the shows
- 34:17on things because I'll notice some things based on my life and expertise, but
- 34:22I won't notice everything, and that's a good call. I should note that
- 34:27the Saints a listener and the comment where they put it it got buried,
- 34:31so I apologize. I don't know who said it specifically, but he pointed
- 34:36out one of the writers for the quarter show was was also also wrote for
- 34:45UH for the for the Shadow, you know, which is another pulp classic,
- 34:51and that makes sense since both shows were on Mutual both shows were based
- 34:54on Street and Smith publications, and the Pope's come up with some odd things.
- 35:02You know, in the pulp magazines, you know, people like Nick
- 35:06Carter, people you know in The Shadow and Doc Savage, they always seem
- 35:13to just have their own, you know, special things and special rules that
- 35:16apply to them. And so that I think is the type of perspective that
- 35:21that writer's coming from. And I think we will probably see that sort of
- 35:24thing in Nick Carter. And so if I miss something and you're in touch
- 35:29with reality in a particular area where I'm perhaps not as skilled in all the
- 35:35details of something, dropped me a line because I'd love to hear her.
- 35:38And you know, that's one of the great things about the show, just
- 35:40how we learn together. All right. Now, we have some additional comments.
- 35:49Eric writes on Facebook, just simply you do a good job. Thank
- 35:52you well, thank you. Eric dragon whise too, writing over on Amazon,
- 35:58says, I listen to old Um Radio on my iPod and I love
- 36:01it. This allows me to listen to old Time Detectors on my tablet.
- 36:06The shows are great with a lot of variety. Adam also includes some old
- 36:09videos and extras in the app. I enjoy his comments before and after the
- 36:13shows, but you can fast forward if you don't. I use Wi Fi,
- 36:15but I download episodes cook I can listen when I don't have WiFi.
- 36:20This is a big plus for me. I can listen or watch videos while
- 36:22traveling. He provides a lot of episodes, and I anticipate each new show.
- 36:27Well, thanks so much. I'm glad you're enjoying the app and using
- 36:30it appropriately. Finally, I have a comment from podcast All and I spent
- 36:37hours listening to some great radio podcast and then look forward to Adam's commentary.
- 36:42I learned something new with each episode and can now recognize many voices of the
- 36:45radio actors. Adams love of these old radio shows is catching well. Thanks
- 36:51so much, and that is one thing, one thing I hope continues to
- 36:55spread. All Right, Well, folks, that'll do it for today.
