- 0:00Hey guys, I'm Lisa Chastain and I'm so grateful that you're
- 0:02tuning into this episode of real money.
- 0:05I have one of my favorite people on the planet today.
- 0:07India Ford, we're going to have a great conversation about what
- 0:10it means to be free in. We're in the world today and I
- 0:15know that you're going to get some great nuggets.
- 0:17So let's just dive in. So your back if we're not going
- 0:25to the first episode that you were on, we really went through
- 0:28your like your whole story. And I heard it several times.
- 0:32So what I want to do for our listeners is to highlight over
- 0:35that you before we got started in the episode today, you had a
- 0:39really good parallel between the darkness in the world and the
- 0:43light that there is in the world.
- 0:44And I think that's a great way to lean into the conversation.
- 0:47The first you want to introduce yourself, reintroduce yourself
- 0:50to the audience to everyone that's listening or watching.
- 0:53Yes, yes, thank you for having me.
- 0:55Yeah, for one again, I'm India for but I do By Indigo, hard,
- 1:02social media. And I am a published author.
- 1:05I'm a mother of four. I am also a success coach at my
- 1:10job, and also a certified life coach on my personal time, I
- 1:19wrote a book called, The Truth is a lie behind the scenes of
- 1:22the family court system and it's basically an autobiography of my
- 1:27life and what I went through in the Family court system and just
- 1:32giving an overview of what it is to go through the family court
- 1:36system and to experience parental alienation as a result
- 1:40of it, I am also in the process of going into public service.
- 1:49So I do love what I do in finance.
- 1:53I've been in finance for us about 17 years now, but I love
- 1:58doing the work. Work for the people and being
- 2:01out in the community. So I think that's where God is
- 2:05kind of, you know, tugging me and not in on the on the notion
- 2:10of freedom. in order for us to be free in order for for that to
- 2:17even have been, you know, you have to have people like me and
- 2:21be willing to stand up for Ourselves and everyone else
- 2:26agreed. So for all the clients that I've
- 2:29had all the conversations I've had about money in particular.
- 2:33Every single person what it boils down to is freedom.
- 2:36Yeah. And their own definition of what
- 2:38freedom is right now, it's Society seeing is right.
- 2:40I'm but I Want to Be Free. Yep.
- 2:43And that's the whole reason that I want to start on my journey to
- 2:46Financial Freedom. I don't really love that term,
- 2:49but that's what it is. I want to be free.
- 2:51I want to be able to call the shots in my life.
- 2:53That's right. It's a wait, it's a great.
- 2:55I think this is a great topic for today.
- 2:57Yeah, before we lean into that though, will you share?
- 3:01I don't think that you shared all of this, but in the first
- 3:04episode. So, if you want to go back and
- 3:06listen to India's episode, you can do that when we were on
- 3:09voice America last year. And then I had you on as an
- 3:13expert for my savvymoney University and you shared an
- 3:17even deeper conversation around. Why?
- 3:20You're so passionate about Finance, write your own story
- 3:22and then your grandma story, Will you take us on that
- 3:25Journey? Absolutely.
- 3:27So when I was younger, of course, a lot of our stories,
- 3:32kind of start out the same our families, don't talk to us about
- 3:35money and I come from a generation of immigrants that
- 3:41come from Panama. And so when my grandmother came
- 3:45to the United States, you only have like 26 dollars in her
- 3:48pocket. How she made that work today,
- 3:51and not tell me. I don't know, but that lady was
- 3:59amazing, they just made it work and being a first-generation
- 4:06American was really hard for me because I'm learning the customs
- 4:11of what it's like to live here, but I'm also being raised in the
- 4:15customs and culture of Panama, you know, and there was a lot of
- 4:21things that I was not allowed to know until I got grown and I
- 4:26have in my own kids and it's like what in life myself like
- 4:29finances for one, you know, I remember when I started school
- 4:34started going to college and I get my financial aid checks and
- 4:38I've always been responsible ever since I was a kid.
- 4:41And I'm like, oh, I need to pay for my books.
- 4:43I need to pay for this. I need to pay for that.
- 4:44And my grandma was like, oh no, you just give that check to me.
- 4:48I I you can use that check for something else.
- 4:50I can use that check for something else and I'm like, no
- 4:52grandma, You're Gonna Miss appropriate.
- 4:55My Money that I'm getting for school.
- 4:57She's like, don't worry about it.
- 4:59I think rough three times in my lifetime and I'm like, but why
- 5:04are you telling me this you know, like this is not good
- 5:09advice to tell me you know like bankrupt I'm saying this now but
- 5:16back then I'm like okay bankrupt.
- 5:18Cool, I can bankrupt. Ooh, that's not good advice.
- 5:22You know you it's really important to to Be very
- 5:27cognizant on what you teach your kids when it comes to finances
- 5:31and it all trickles down from what you learn at home.
- 5:34Agreed. I totally agree it all.
- 5:36Does we end up role-modeling exactly how our families were
- 5:39with money. Yeah.
- 5:40Whether we realize it or not. Yes.
- 5:42When did. So that was college, that was
- 5:44college that you started seeing that.
- 5:46I started seeing that and what hit me was because I didn't
- 5:49really have the support that a lot of young mothers have with
- 5:53their families. You know how the family kind of
- 5:55comes together and financially I had help with diapers and things
- 5:58like that but when it came to the nitty-gritty stuff like
- 6:01medical all that stuff. That was my responsibility and
- 6:04my responsibility only and I took that very seriously because
- 6:08I knew no one was going to be there for me, right.
- 6:11And you had your first child at 16, right?
- 6:14So you know, when I got denied you know, Public Assistance.
- 6:18The first time I was like, okay that's God's way of telling me
- 6:21that this is just not the life for me.
- 6:23I tried it but it just never worked out for me.
- 6:26Me and my grandma was never on public assistance.
- 6:30So I didn't know how to get on public assistance.
- 6:34Either. You know, she did get checks
- 6:36from us for us for being in the system.
- 6:39Yeah. But should you were in the
- 6:41Foster system, right? Mmm, but she wasn't like getting
- 6:45Public Assistance, like food, stamps, and things like that for
- 6:48us. So, by the time I was an adult,
- 6:50an adult. And by the time I started having
- 6:52kids at the age of 16, while before it became an adult, and I
- 6:55started having kids. I didn't really know how to do
- 6:58that stuff. You know, it was like, oh, you
- 7:00got to go out there? You got to work.
- 7:01You gotta do this, you gotta do that.
- 7:03My mind was set on the way that they brought me up.
- 7:06Not the way that America said, oh well, you can have this
- 7:08crutch because this is available to you now.
- 7:11My grandma's like, no, you're going to go out there, you're
- 7:13going to work and you're gonna need it, and I did that.
- 7:16And I'm happy about that. I'm happy that she that she did
- 7:20that for me. I was upset at that time.
- 7:23Like, oh, why, you know, but It happened for me.
- 7:29It did not only you. So you became a young mother and
- 7:33your work ethic is unquestionable knowing you as
- 7:35well as I do. Yeah, working is a part of who
- 7:38you are and I know the next step, whatever you do, you're
- 7:41going to be yes, the best at. But you also at the time that
- 7:46you had, your first kid, was it your daughter?
- 7:48My Son, Your Son, you went back to school.
- 7:51I did. I went back to school right
- 7:54after I had my son, I was About maybe a month and I withdrew
- 7:59myself out of school out of high school and I put myself in a
- 8:02charter school because I knew the school that I was in, I
- 8:05wasn't going to make it around the people.
- 8:07Then I was surrounded by a my grandma would always say it's
- 8:10not you it's you're going to take, I mean it's you you're the
- 8:14problem and you're going to carry all the problems with you
- 8:18but she didn't understand what I was facing out there you know,
- 8:20the peer pressure and the this and that I'm fighting in the,
- 8:24you know me having to stand up for myself and She didn't
- 8:26understand what I was going through out there.
- 8:29So I took it upon myself to God. Rest Your Soul Grandma.
- 8:33I'm sorry, but I forged her signature out of the high school
- 8:37that I was going to. And I enrolled into a charter
- 8:40school where I was able to get intimate learning, get
- 8:45one-on-one, personal learning, and also be able to graduate on
- 8:50time with my class and also get college credits at the same
- 8:54time. So by the time I was 19 Actually
- 8:5718 and I graduated from high school.
- 9:00I already had a certain amount of credits towards my first
- 9:04degree, which was in business. So then I then I got into
- 9:10business operations, working for, you know, different
- 9:14organizations, different things, and things like that.
- 9:17Just seeing how the business operated, the operational side
- 9:22of things. I love it.
- 9:23It's the, the, at a little backbone of every business.
- 9:25Yes, Is and I'm like right in the thick of it.
- 9:28And I'm like, oh, okay. I understand why you do this,
- 9:31and I understand why you do that, and I've worked for.
- 9:33So I've worked for about five, major finance companies and I
- 9:38have been able to like link together all of the processes
- 9:42that they've done and I'm like, you know what, when I get my own
- 9:45things started, it's going to be the bomb.com.
- 9:49There's not gonna be any type of loopholes anybody's going to be
- 9:53able to get through for anything because I know I know what it
- 9:57takes to make certain thing at work.
- 9:59You know, I'm just really excited for that time.
- 10:02I think God is like really putting me in a position to be
- 10:07connected with genuine people, get connected and stay connected
- 10:12with genuine. People like my past is not even
- 10:15existed anymore. The people that was in my life
- 10:18before they no longer exist and I'm totally okay with that.
- 10:22Yeah. And caramel is karma coming for
- 10:24a lot of folks to answer That I've seen, you know, and it's
- 10:27like, I'm not laughing about it and it's not happy for me.
- 10:32But people really need to understand spiritual laws that
- 10:36they're real know whatever you do to someone, it will come back
- 10:39to you might not happen. Now, might not happen.
- 10:44You know. Tomorrow, it might happen. 11
- 10:47years down the road. Yeah, that's happening is
- 10:50coming. I feel like your book was that
- 10:52transition for you that by, by sharing your story?
- 10:56He publicly. And also I know that by Having
- 11:00the courage to share your side of your story.
- 11:03And if you, if you want to read in these story, they can get it
- 11:05on Amazon. Right.
- 11:07So it's called the truth is a lie.
- 11:08Yes the truth is a lie behind the scenes of the family courts.
- 11:11This. Yeah.
- 11:12And and you do a beautiful job of saying here's where it
- 11:15started for me and here's what happened.
- 11:17And here's the journey and here are the lessons do.
- 11:20And now how young are you? I am 38. 38 and 38 having having
- 11:25see you I experienced as your friend, you go through that
- 11:28process and then through the book launch, it feels like by
- 11:31you saying that now, you're like, I'm ready to turn the
- 11:34corner. Yeah.
- 11:35And you're letting it go. That's what it was for me and it
- 11:38was all your fault. This is all her fault because I
- 11:43got. Was it the money?
- 11:45Which one was? It was it the money moves?
- 11:47Was it money? Move, baby.
- 11:48Okay, so, I was on her show and I'm going through my timeline
- 11:52and, you know, I practiced this like 20 times before I got on
- 11:55your show. Yeah.
- 11:56Yeah, and then, when it got to my kids in the turning point.
- 11:59And when I saw the turning point for me, I realize what I went
- 12:04through was really messed up, and I'm over here smiling, and
- 12:08like, it's okay. And, you know, power, you know,
- 12:11let's go empowering know. This was messed up, and there's
- 12:18some healing that still needs to happen.
- 12:20Here, I never took a time to pause.
- 12:23Yeah, I never took the time when I was going, Going through that
- 12:27time when I was going through that time.
- 12:29Yeah, to sit down and pause and that's important.
- 12:33We get into this groove, we're just going, going going, going
- 12:36going going? Okay, trauma happens, don't go
- 12:38and go and go, okay, I get it. You know my car gets smashed go
- 12:42and go and go. I mean When are you take a time
- 12:46to pause and be like, you know, I need to acknowledge.
- 12:48This is what really happened process it and then move on.
- 12:54It's a natural tea. I think it's an awareness and
- 12:56that's the first step that we start, which is what we're
- 12:58talking about. I think it might have been a, my
- 13:00money moves event where we talk about the things that happen to
- 13:03us financially, which is where we met.
- 13:05We met on a financial front of saying, you're a financial
- 13:07expert Amanda. Yeah, shout out to Amanda.
- 13:10Who introduced us was like your financial expert.
- 13:12Your financial expert. You're both.
- 13:14Really cool. That's connect and then it
- 13:17became a process of you looking back.
- 13:19It going all of these patterns have crew have gotten me where I
- 13:23am today, but what you're describing and what you're
- 13:26describing is the drift of Life. Yes, the drift of life that
- 13:30you're caught up in this drift. And you had kids young and
- 13:33you're moving and you're creating, and determined is the
- 13:37word that I would use for. You were determined to be
- 13:40successful. Yes.
- 13:41And on a mission to be successful, but then something,
- 13:44Collector. You're like, hold up.
- 13:46Yeah, hang on a sec. What am I doing this for?
- 13:49He knows for and it all went back to My childhood.
- 13:55Mmm, I was doing it to make my family proud, not because it was
- 14:00something that ND wants to do. You not?
- 14:03Not because it was something that was going to bring me joy
- 14:07or success or happiness internally, you know, it was all
- 14:11external. I had to sit back and be like,
- 14:14you know what, what the heck am I doing all this for?
- 14:17Why do I feel the need to be validated?
- 14:22Why do I feel the need? Where's this coming from?
- 14:26And when I sat down and realized that it really does not matter
- 14:29to me, it really does not matter to me.
- 14:32What your what your family thinks what my family thinks
- 14:34what anyone thinks you know. So that's why I meant in a place
- 14:38of quietness right now because I don't want to come out because
- 14:42of my mindset. I don't want to just come out
- 14:44and just do anything because I don't care what nobody think.
- 14:47You know, I want to, I want to be intentional, I want to be
- 14:51impactful, you know? I To be helpful.
- 14:55I don't want to just be someone just talking just to talk or
- 14:58just someone out there just to be out there.
- 15:00Yeah, we talked about that in my book, The what, Reckless versus
- 15:04not recluses and there's that you don't want to be Reckless.
- 15:08Yeah, with your energy, right? So true, harnessing it and being
- 15:13intentional. What, what?
- 15:15What? Promote, like?
- 15:16What? What's the word I'm looking for?
- 15:18Why did you decide to do the life coach certification?
- 15:23Because I've always been really good at helping people in their
- 15:26lives, just because of my f UPS in life, you know, and I want it
- 15:31to be a voice for folks that are going through life, that just
- 15:37wanted someone to listen to them without judgment without any
- 15:41type of, you know, feeling like what they're going through as a
- 15:45human being is wrong. You know.
- 15:47And I just wanted to be a listening ear and just to help
- 15:50because sometimes I saw you need, it is You know, there were
- 15:54many times where, you know, I'll go to my friend, and she won't
- 15:57say nothing and I'm like, hello, are you there?
- 15:59She's like, I'm just sitting here with you.
- 16:01And that's all I really need. And I'm like, okay, well, thank
- 16:04you for letting me vent. I'll talk to you later.
- 16:06You know, and that's all I really need it.
- 16:09Yeah, you know. Um, so that's what I wanted to
- 16:12be for people, but it has it has been draining, because I really
- 16:17feel that We can all coach ourselves, you know, and
- 16:25sometimes we just look for that. External thing to kind of let
- 16:29steam off a, we can do that in other ways.
- 16:31We can go work out. I love doing that.
- 16:33Yeah. You know, we can go hang out
- 16:35with friends that are positive. Yep.
- 16:37You know, we can go do things that help us to release that
- 16:41trauma and some difference. True.
- 16:43We just, I just did a whole four day Retreat, about that teaching
- 16:46people how to take the tools on because we are all born with the
- 16:48to us, right? And there's this distinction of
- 16:51life is happening to me. Versus life is happening for me
- 16:56and when you lean into life is happening for me, it's an
- 17:00empowerment and our responsibility and you got to
- 17:03learn the tools. Yeah.
- 17:04You gotta learn the tool so having a coach in your corner to
- 17:07help that process move forward. So you can learn is a great way
- 17:11to get started but not always necessary.
- 17:13And what we were talking about before the show is getting quiet
- 17:17and I actually said it to Creek or increase to do.
- 17:19Shout out to At home and her Studio were in her studio today,
- 17:23Cree, co-productions. We're talking about getting
- 17:28quiet and how for the first time at the age of 43.
- 17:31I'm learning how to relax. Yeah, just chill.
- 17:35So happy that makes me. It's so weird.
- 17:39It happened this morning. I have my alarm set for 4:30
- 17:42a.m. I was like I'm gonna go work out
- 17:44and I go to my hot buns working out.
- 17:46And I was like, why am I doing that?
- 17:49Why do I have to perpetually hustle?
- 17:52Why do I have to perpetually push myself?
- 17:55It's like 2:00 in the morning. I'm having this conversation
- 17:57with myself and I was like, what would happen if I didn't ya.
- 18:00What would happen? If I didn't push myself to my
- 18:02extreme today, right? What would happen if I just laid
- 18:05in bed for an hour and did nothing and cuddle with my dog,
- 18:09right? And you know what happened?
- 18:11Nothing nothing. And I lay there and like
- 18:15re-energize myself, exactly do what you needed to do and we're
- 18:19here today. So this is your call to action
- 18:21as a listener. Is what would happen if you just
- 18:23have the courage to hit the pause button of your life?
- 18:27And you've done that? And in a few ways, over the last
- 18:30five six years strategically, one of my favorite conversations
- 18:35we had is you took the time to invite me to Coffee.
- 18:38You're like, hey, and like you didn't let up on me either
- 18:41because I want to talk to you. Yes.
- 18:43We sat there for probably almost two hours, and it was so nice to
- 18:47just pause. Yeah, and chat.
- 18:51Right. And so, let's lean into that
- 18:53far. Our listeners today and our
- 18:56viewers, what do you want them to hear about how that's added
- 18:59value to your life? At this point in your life?
- 19:03Pausing is so important. Pausing is a way of like you
- 19:08were saying, restoration, you can't.
- 19:12I mean, we're not robots. We're not designed to keep going
- 19:15and going and going, and I just want to say that, for me,
- 19:21pausing has just been incredible.
- 19:23And I pause all the time, okay? Like if I need a day off, I
- 19:29call, and I request a day off, if I want to our take a day.
- 19:33Day off if I need to. As a matter of fact, every
- 19:37Saturday for my kids do not bother me today's my day, close
- 19:41my door. You guys can are old enough to
- 19:44figure it out. There's peanut butter and jelly.
- 19:50That's right. Go figure it out.
- 19:52Today is my day to recharge. I don't feel guilty anymore.
- 19:57There was also a time where I would go shopping and every time
- 20:01I would go shopping on, never get anything.
- 20:03Myself. And the intention was to do
- 20:05that, you know, can relate to that.
- 20:07I'll go with the intent to. I'm gonna go get me some shoes,
- 20:10my go get blouse, you know something, nice for interview,
- 20:13whatever. And then I'm coming out the
- 20:15store with all this kid stuff. I stopped that like, you know,
- 20:20even when the kids are with me, mommy cannot.
- 20:21No, no, not today. When it's your time, it's your
- 20:26time and it's so important to compartmentalize everything in
- 20:31your life or you're going to drive.
- 20:33Yourself, crazy trying to mix everything together.
- 20:36You can't be everything to everyone.
- 20:38You can't. I'm going to be the bad guy
- 20:40today because I'm not getting you those Jordans?
- 20:42No, I'm not doing that now. It's a great word, it is and
- 20:45it's very in it. I think I think my hair is start
- 20:49turning gray in the front. I think it's kind of slow down a
- 20:52little bit when I started saying no, yeah, yes!
- 20:57What if we, what if today you had the courage to say no.
- 21:01Yeah. Not for the purposes of being a
- 21:04jerk, right? But just saying what's the
- 21:07lesson I had this conversation with my women at the retreat
- 21:10this weekend of when we when we don't say no.
- 21:15What that creates for the other person, our kids, our family our
- 21:20friends. I know for me it was very
- 21:22disempowering for a long time by not saying no I was trying to
- 21:26avoid the pain or the consequence of saying no or
- 21:30avoid that. Person.
- 21:32Yeah, in the pain. Yeah.
- 21:35So like my son's a good example of that he wanted something and
- 21:38I instead of me having the hard conversation and saying no go
- 21:41figure it out yourself. I'd want to save him from that
- 21:44does get hurt in that displeased and that that's a vicious cycle.
- 21:48That is that's a vicious cycle, financially, or otherwise that
- 21:52we can, we can say, no, we can slow down, we can create peace.
- 21:59Yes, regardless of what's going on in our lives.
- 22:02Because life around us is not going to stop.
- 22:04That's true, it's not. And if they respect you, they
- 22:06will respect your know. And if they love you they will
- 22:09they will understand your no, you know, I always feel like the
- 22:15the best way you can tell the character of a person is tell
- 22:20them no something or set a boundary and see how they react
- 22:25to that boundary and if they get disrespectful, you know how they
- 22:29feel about you? That's right now, that's true.
- 22:33I mean, it's just really that simple.
- 22:35How do you navigate that in Corporate America?
- 22:37So will you share a little bit about what you're up to in
- 22:39Corporate America? Even though we know you're at
- 22:42some, did some day, you're changing what?
- 22:44You're not yet, what are you doing?
- 22:46Corporate America today? And how do you navigate?
- 22:48No and boundaries. So I have a really cool job
- 22:52because I can always just push things back if it just if it's
- 22:56just not right? But basically I am a associate
- 23:00Client Service Manager for Or the one of the for the second
- 23:04largest finance companies in the United States and I say no all
- 23:10the time to things like especially if it's like a
- 23:13meetings. Let's say no to meetings if I
- 23:15have to because I have other meetings going on.
- 23:18Yeah I know our it doesn't apply to me you know I don't need to
- 23:23be there. It's works for me.
- 23:25It's real easy for me to just hit the decline button and just
- 23:28be on my way. So I don't necessarily have to
- 23:32physically say, you know, no taking anyone or a request
- 23:36that's good. Has that always been the case
- 23:39Pretty much because I've been in operations.
- 23:41So I've been on the back end of things.
- 23:43So I really never really had to deal with with people, gotcha.
- 23:48But I think it's going to be different for me.
- 23:50Definitely now that I'm going into like, dealing with people
- 23:54know, in what way she'll. So I'm a part of a business
- 23:57resource group called bold which is the black Organization for
- 24:01leaders and development. And we basically have a group of
- 24:08people That come together and we talk about diversity Equity
- 24:12inclusion and belonging within Corporate America and we have
- 24:16some really tough conversations, you know, and we talk to allies,
- 24:20we talk to talk to our folks and there's a lot of, you know, it's
- 24:27a lot of uncomfortable conversations.
- 24:29And sometimes, you know, requests that we get we do have
- 24:33to say no to for one I had invited one of my friends who's
- 24:38actually, Doing a, he's doing a documentary called how to kill a
- 24:44black man talking about societal issues and his heirs on the 7th
- 24:50of July. His name is where it is.
- 24:52That are Timothy Jackson. I'm not sure, he didn't give the
- 24:57details, but there is a premier happening, but I definitely will
- 25:00share it with you. Jim Timothy Jackson, Timothy
- 25:03Jackson, he's awesome. He's he's the co-founder of
- 25:06Youth mentoring and and he is awesome with real estate and all
- 25:11that good stuff. But basically, I invited him
- 25:15over to, you know, to speak for our company and because of the
- 25:21content in his books and things like that.
- 25:24The company was like, oh no, that's just way too much for us,
- 25:28but these are the conversations that need to be had for us to
- 25:31move forward. So I don't think that they're
- 25:35there just yet but we're getting there.
- 25:38We're you know step-by-step we're getting there but in order
- 25:42for us to love evil even the financial playing field between
- 25:47you know, Caucasians and blacks. We need to have those difficult
- 25:51conversations because black people are very valuable to the
- 25:57financial industry. Course, we just need to figure
- 26:00out how to use that money. We need to understand how it's
- 26:04supposed to be used and we need to understand the value of what
- 26:08it's supposed to be used for as a tool even when it comes to
- 26:12credit. And this is why it was so hard
- 26:14for me to be, you know, 100 percent like into credit
- 26:17counseling. Because a lot of the people that
- 26:20will come in didn't understand the value of it.
- 26:23They just wanted I just want a quick.
- 26:26Let me get my credit. Yeah, really quick but they're
- 26:29not understanding. This is not a trophy.
- 26:31This is a tool. This is not.
- 26:33Hey I got 800 credit score. What are you going to do with
- 26:36this? This is a financial wealth
- 26:38building. Cool.
- 26:39And if you don't understand how to build wealth, then you're not
- 26:43going to take advantage of the tool that it's supposed to be
- 26:46used for. You're not going to take it full
- 26:47advantage of it. Hmm and so when I understood
- 26:50that part I'm like Lord we got a long way to go.
- 26:54Yeah. What are some of the what are
- 26:56some of the strides you're seeing that you're making well
- 27:00one for you, personally, because you had to learn this starting
- 27:04in the banking industry, but your family didn't instill it in
- 27:07to you and I know your Really passionate about Building
- 27:10Wealth, real estate investment. Properties is a part of
- 27:13something that you want to create?
- 27:15What are those nuggets that made a difference for you?
- 27:17And then we'll talk about for a listener, even to say I agree
- 27:20with you, what? Like getting out of debt?
- 27:23Yeah, it does not mean that you're a financial Champions.
- 27:25Yeah. It's not the only not really the
- 27:28metric of success not having debt.
- 27:31It's how to use debt and leverage that those are the
- 27:34sophisticated Financial conversations that we want to
- 27:37elevate. That's, let's talk about you.
- 27:38First and then we'll shift. Okay, so what was the first
- 27:42question? It was really more for you.
- 27:43What were those pieces? And those nuggets of information
- 27:46that elevated you and supported, you and growing financially, it
- 27:50was really seeing my family, go to shambles and not wanting that
- 27:54for myself, you know, and those were really the Nuggets, you
- 27:58know, waking up every morning, seeing my family not have
- 28:02anything and the real big nugget was when my grandma died and
- 28:06didn't leave anything and I was already E in the financial
- 28:09world. And I understood was how
- 28:11finances worked. And then when she passed away, I
- 28:15realized that she really just died and took care of herself,
- 28:18which was great because she left, no debt for no one, but
- 28:22she left. Nothing extra for anyone to be
- 28:24able to leverage. And that's something that I
- 28:26don't want to do to my children, you know.
- 28:28So as soon as I bought my home, I made sure that right away, I
- 28:32got insurance, life, insurance, you know, in case anything
- 28:36happens to me, you know, building your financial house in
- 28:38So important, you know, you have to have insurance, like, I
- 28:42believe Insurance, everything, it's ensure everything, if you
- 28:46can because you never know what's going to happen.
- 28:50You have this thing, you need to protect it, we have your life.
- 28:53You need to protect and life. Insurance is not necessarily.
- 28:56You don't necessarily have to use life insurance for your
- 28:58death. You can learn it for your life,
- 29:00your home. You get the story about your
- 29:01grandma's home. Do you remember those numbers
- 29:04that you shared in our Savvy chat?
- 29:07It was something like your cuz your grandma.
- 29:08I didn't buy her home. No she didn't buy rented, she
- 29:11rented and she, she rented for 23 years.
- 29:17The rent was a thousand dollars a month.
- 29:20I think it was over 100, 100 1000 dollars, twelve times. 23
- 29:24y'all do the math? Yeah.
- 29:26Mmm. It's so the cool part was that
- 29:29the her landlord never went up on the rent, no matter what was
- 29:32going on. In the society, he had offered
- 29:35to sell it to her for five hundred thousand.
- 29:37Five hundred. Yeah, five.
- 29:39Fifty thousand dollars, I'm sorry.
- 29:41He offered to sell it to her for 50,000 dollars and because of
- 29:44her lack of financial literacy, she's like, no I'm not getting
- 29:46into all of that. I don't want that and she
- 29:50declined and she was paying this man, a thousand dollars a month.
- 29:54Not realizing that she paid this man quadruple.
- 29:59What up? What did she would have the
- 30:00house out for I don't remember. It's sold for.
- 30:04I think it was like 22. I got the numbers.
- 30:06I wrote it down but it's sold for two times more than what it
- 30:11was worth. I think it was like five hundred
- 30:13thousand dollars over five hundred thousand dollars.
- 30:15So half a million dollars. Yeah so she had the option to
- 30:18buy it, she didn't and to wrap that concept around, so many
- 30:22people are afraid of debt. Yes, they're afraid to take on
- 30:26that responsibility but the truth is especially when it
- 30:29comes to rent. You're paying it.
- 30:32Anyway, you're paying it anyway and it anyway, why not?
- 30:34Pay it to yourself and it is a big responsibility, it's not
- 30:37just home ownership, so that that clicked for you.
- 30:40Mmm. And you bought a home and
- 30:42insurance is another thought to? Yeah, anybody who has kids,
- 30:47anybody who wants to leave a legacy that there's an insurance
- 30:50out there, what else? Yes.
- 30:51I also want to emphasize the fact that success financial
- 30:55success means so much different for everyone else.
- 30:58So maybe for her that's what she wanted to do.
- 31:02And That's what was more comfortable to her.
- 31:03Maybe she didn't want to own a home because she was comfortable
- 31:06with calling the landlord to fix things when it when it went bad,
- 31:10you know what I mean. So, that's definitely a benefit
- 31:12of renting. Hmm.
- 31:14So it's it's really a personal thing.
- 31:18You know, when it comes to financial success, what do you
- 31:21want that to really look like for you because you might want
- 31:25to buy a home, but you might not want to want the hassle of
- 31:28dealing with certain things with the home.
- 31:30So how are you going to? How you going to deal with that?
- 31:33Yeah. What is the plan to deal with
- 31:34that? I get that.
- 31:35So for you now with where you are in your company with the
- 31:39conversations that you're having, what are the next steps
- 31:43for someone who wants to elevate, financially that
- 31:46doesn't like for you specifically, what are you
- 31:49teaching? And promoting and sharing out
- 31:50there for someone to do to, like, take the next step
- 31:54financially for themselves? I know, I have like a whole host
- 31:56of things, but I think it's really important to talk to
- 31:59where you're at and what you see.
- 32:01Well, I We talked about earlier, having a coach, you need a
- 32:05coach, you need a coach for everything that you do in your
- 32:09life. I don't care how old you are, I
- 32:11don't care what you're doing. You need somebody that's going
- 32:14to hold you accountable, help you along the way and you need
- 32:18to be open-minded. That's the thing is to have an
- 32:21open mind and know that your coach and your advisors are
- 32:26really there, just to be there for you and they're not trying
- 32:29to just tell you what to do. They Really want to help you
- 32:33become a good coach does. Yeah, really good coach.
- 32:35They and they'll go through the, The Trenches with you as well?
- 32:41So, yeah, I would say get a coach really find out sit down
- 32:44and really think about what you want, ask yourself why you want
- 32:47it because if you don't know why then you just going to be out
- 32:50here wandering and wasting your own time and so good people's
- 32:54to. I agree.
- 32:55Like there's there's so much Financial advice out there of
- 32:57people telling you what you should do and to the point of
- 33:01getting quiet which I want Talk about to, you know, finish the
- 33:04show in that conversation about the value of getting quiet.
- 33:07Is that when you have the courage to answer the question
- 33:11for yourself of what you want, then you will line the right
- 33:15Financial strategies and tools right systems and so many so
- 33:20many of us just limit ourselves and what we believe what's
- 33:24capable for ourselves and that comes from our history.
- 33:29It comes from our families, we're in a limited Our
- 33:32situation. And we have to have the courage
- 33:34to say, okay. What do I want?
- 33:36Yep. And then coaches mentors will
- 33:39help you get there. That's right.
- 33:41They'll help you get there. Yes, like GPS.
- 33:43You don't know where you're going.
- 33:45Unless, you know where you're starting, you know?
- 33:48It's like, okay, I'm going to plug in the the destination.
- 33:50But how's it going to tell you to get there, if you don't know,
- 33:53you're starting mmm, you know? And that's so very important.
- 33:57And if you realize, when you talk to a lot of people, the
- 34:00first thing you ask them is what do you want?
- 34:01They don't. Not even know.
- 34:02They don't know, they have no idea.
- 34:06I want and it's not to be funny but it's What are you going
- 34:15after? What are you chasing after and
- 34:17helping these people and really just tapping into that side of
- 34:20their self so that they can be the very best and all that so
- 34:23much because speaking to you who's watching this or listening
- 34:26in this moment you are here for a reason and I believe that I
- 34:33believe that it's not that people don't know what they
- 34:35want. No one has taken the time to ask
- 34:38them what they want. No one's taking the time to sit
- 34:42across the from the Able and go. Okay, what's real for you today,
- 34:46right? Right.
- 34:47And when you have the courage, To Simply say, maybe it's not so
- 34:54simple. But when you have the courage to
- 34:56say, this is what I want. And then go tell people, this is
- 35:01what I want. It's the fear.
- 35:04What if it doesn't happen? Yeah.
- 35:06It's the fear. What if I fail?
- 35:09Hmm. So people never put their asses
- 35:11on the line. Yeah.
- 35:12For what they really want. Hmm.
- 35:14And by getting quiet and asking the question, Oprah says, this
- 35:20isn't her. All Child, what do you want?
- 35:23What do you want? And the first answer might pop
- 35:25up. I don't know.
- 35:27Okay, ask it again. What do you want?
- 35:30And what do you want? And what do you want?
- 35:31And keep asking that question until the answer start coming
- 35:34up. It takes time.
- 35:36It takes courage. And once you, once you start
- 35:39answering those questions, you start living your own life.
- 35:41Yes. And we have to stop thinking for
- 35:44other people. When we ask that question to
- 35:46ourselves and this is a call, I'm calling out my financial
- 35:48professionals right now. That's right.
- 35:50I'm calling you out because the more you answer for someone,
- 35:54what they need to do, what they should do, what they have to
- 35:57have, where they should be at a certain age.
- 35:59You stop their evolution and their process and you stop the
- 36:03conversation. You do it serves no one.
- 36:05It does. It does not.
- 36:07And, you know, I stopped doing that to I stop telling people
- 36:09what they need to do because it's not my business, right?
- 36:12I know what I need to do. I know what I need to do and I'm
- 36:18gonna do that. And if you want to follow in my
- 36:20footsteps, Oops, then I'll give you the recipe but I'm not gonna
- 36:25sit here and tell you what to do.
- 36:26I had to live your life, you know now so getting quiet.
- 36:32What has been the value for you? At this point in your life in
- 36:36getting quiet and slowing down slowing down for me.
- 36:41It has the benefit for me. Has just been not really Dealing
- 36:47with anything, you know, not, I wouldn't say dealing well,
- 36:52that's a bad word, not really having to fill the hustle and
- 36:57bustle like you were talking about of having to do something,
- 37:00you know. It's, I choose to do it if I
- 37:04want to, you know, today I choose to do and then what, if,
- 37:08what if I don't do it? Then what happens?
- 37:10Am I going to get a spanking, right?
- 37:12He's gonna do it. So I think That the freedom part
- 37:19it just I feel free. I feel like, okay, this is where
- 37:23I need to be. It helps me to exercise my
- 37:27feminine energy as well, you know, want to be more into like
- 37:32feminine things. You know, I'm not just trying to
- 37:36protect and provide so much anymore.
- 37:38You know, I have a partner that's willing to help me do the
- 37:41things that I need to do to progress.
- 37:43And, and I think that's important too.
- 37:48It also helped me to realize. The chaos that needed to go.
- 37:54Yeah, the the chaos that I still had in the baggage that still
- 37:57had that wanted to go so it's gone now.
- 38:02I'm happy, he can Town. Yeah, I can tell Place.
- 38:07What's next for you. Well you're going to what's next
- 38:11for me. I have so many ideas, but
- 38:14remember I was telling you about my Independent Living Program
- 38:18that I want to do for the Youth and I am in the process of
- 38:23talking to someone to get an apartment complex to make that
- 38:26happen. So I'm in the beginning stages
- 38:29of getting my business plan going for that.
- 38:32I also am looking to do a podcast with my best friend.
- 38:37Her name is run, leader, Jennings.
- 38:39I forget. I'm so sorry.
- 38:40Best friend. I forget what she goes by on
- 38:42social media because she has like three different social
- 38:45medias. But it's my timeline is I thinks
- 38:47my timeline is on Tick-Tock. She's awesome.
- 38:51And I also have been thinking about going into politics so be
- 38:57on the lookout for that because that's really where my
- 39:00heartstrings are going into like homelessness and helping the
- 39:05youth in. You know, just dealing with the
- 39:09budgets that we have going on in our city, especially in Denver.
- 39:13Yeah, I even considered going back to Denver, to run for
- 39:17office there but who knows, who knows what what The strong wind
- 39:22blows, where the strong wind blows me.
- 39:25Yeah but I know that it's I know it's going to be somewhere in
- 39:29that area but Independent Living Program is happening.
- 39:32That's badass. You view over the last.
- 39:35I don't know how long we were on.
- 39:36How long have we known each other through 12 years?
- 39:38Yeah, you have been on this journey of saying, what is
- 39:42important for? Indie.
- 39:43Hmm. And where am I, where am I going
- 39:46next? And being very intentional with
- 39:47that financially with a few minutes left.
- 39:51Have you set yourself up to be able to have the freedom to make
- 39:55the, to make the shift? You'll know, when the right time
- 39:58is to make the shift, but even Just Having the courage to buy
- 40:02your own complex, right? What how have you, what steps
- 40:06have you taken to set yourself up being in the company of the
- 40:09right? People.
- 40:11You know, there's a saying that if you surround yourself by six
- 40:15million, 5 million years, you'll be the 61.
- 40:18And since I've been out here, I've connected myself with some
- 40:21nominal people that have been able to give me some phenomenal
- 40:24connections and I'm just in a really good place right now.
- 40:29Just trying to figure out all of that soon.
- 40:31So that's I think really connections your network is your
- 40:37net worth. I love that we can learn without
- 40:40your network, is your net worth. I love that so much.
