- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Legwell covering those Denver Broncos for ESPN dot com.
- 0:04Speaker 1: He joins us right now on the ramos Law Hotline
- 0:07Speaker 1: car accident. You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Visitamoslaw dot com. Jeff, let's start here. First team offense
- 0:17Speaker 1: went right down the field and scored a touchdown. Granted,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Packers first team offense did as well, But in
- 0:23Speaker 1: the big picture, for the guys that are going to,
- 0:25Speaker 1: you know, actually play for the Broncos this upcoming season,
- 0:29Speaker 1: what was your evaluation for how things looked both offensively
- 0:33Speaker 1: and defensively from Friday night?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Well, mate, I guess that come down with the head coach.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Did it is that that looked like a preseason dip
- 0:46Speaker 2: a little bit, which you know you see sometimes, But
- 0:51Speaker 2: I thought they they just didn't have the same sharpness
- 0:55Speaker 2: they've had even in a lot of their practices on
- 0:58Speaker 2: on either side of the b And some of it
- 1:01Speaker 2: is you have a veteran team. You don't have a
- 1:05Speaker 2: lot of people in that initial wave of the game,
- 1:08Speaker 2: even even in the second team really who are just scrapping,
- 1:14Speaker 2: you know, for that roster spot. So sometimes it can
- 1:18Speaker 2: get a little workman like and and frankly, it just
- 1:23Speaker 2: didn't didn't have the same sharpness like I say that
- 1:26Speaker 2: they've had and and that's what struck me. And you know,
- 1:29Speaker 2: special teams especially looked a little wobbily, and that's where
- 1:33Speaker 2: that's where you are looking at a lot of those
- 1:35Speaker 2: guys who are who are battling for those you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: final roster spots. And I think today's practice reflected that
- 1:45Speaker 2: a little bit. There were a lot of special teams
- 1:47Speaker 2: periods boiled down even some of the you know, sort
- 1:51Speaker 2: of individual positional areas of special teams. So I think
- 1:57Speaker 2: they they had sort of the same feeling about it
- 2:00Speaker 2: as I did when I looked at it. So that's
- 2:03Speaker 2: what struck me. And I think that you know, when
- 2:08Speaker 2: when the Packers are driving early, you know that when
- 2:11Speaker 2: it's starters on starters and Singleton tries to make a check,
- 2:16Speaker 2: a defensive check in the red zone and they haven't
- 2:19Speaker 2: really put a game plan and so not everybody, not
- 2:23Speaker 2: everybody got a check that was was not really on
- 2:26Speaker 2: the table for use in that game. So I think
- 2:30Speaker 2: it was that kind of day.
- 2:32Speaker 3: So I mean, Jeff, use what's so hard about modern
- 2:35Speaker 3: preseason football? I just feel like they're not showing us
- 2:37Speaker 3: anything anyway. So do you have any level of concern
- 2:39Speaker 3: for trends for the years as far as like not
- 2:42Speaker 3: getting off the field. I mean, you know, none of
- 2:44Speaker 3: the real players actually played each other and feels like,
- 2:46Speaker 3: so where what do you take away as far as
- 2:48Speaker 3: concern or you just chalk it up the preseason and
- 2:50Speaker 3: hopefully see a better attitude this Friday.
- 2:53Speaker 2: No, Andy, I always take away you know, you should
- 2:57Speaker 2: execute against the level of players you're against, if it's
- 3:01Speaker 2: ones on ones and twos on twos, largely, you should
- 3:05Speaker 2: see some semblance of of you know, proficiency. And I
- 3:11Speaker 2: think that the deeper they went, I think this this
- 3:15Speaker 2: this was a little surprising. Le Broncos have good depth.
- 3:19Speaker 2: You know, they should not have a preseason game where
- 3:22Speaker 2: things kind of deteriorate with the second teamers and then
- 3:26Speaker 2: they really go downhill with the third teamers. That that
- 3:30Speaker 2: shouldn't happen with a team with this kind of depth.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So you know, you don't know if it's a little
- 3:36Speaker 2: bit of fatigue and you know, mental fatigue even or
- 3:41Speaker 2: any of that. You shouldn't have that, you know as
- 3:44Speaker 2: much as you did years ago. But you know it's
- 3:48Speaker 2: it's human nature and uh, you know when you talk
- 3:52Speaker 2: to players now, they talk about the grind of training camp.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You know, it's real in their world. So you know,
- 3:59Speaker 2: maybe the Ryan caught up with him. If you see
- 4:01Speaker 2: some of the same stuff Friday, then I say, yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 2: that's you got to believe your eyes and that is
- 4:07Speaker 2: a concern. So I think the head coach was very
- 4:12Speaker 2: adamant in the things he said to them, you know
- 4:16Speaker 2: about Okay, it's not okay to say it's just preseason.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And I give Sean credit for that. He doesn't let
- 4:24Speaker 2: him skate on where it's a veteran team, You're fine,
- 4:29Speaker 2: don't worry about it. He did not let that skate
- 4:32Speaker 2: at all.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Like, like you what did the film show you on
- 4:35Speaker 1: the opening drive? Both both operation and execution bo Nicks
- 4:41Speaker 1: in the first team offense.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Lonald's gonna make a difference, I would say, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: he creates just the kind of spatial challenge you want.
- 4:51Speaker 2: The best offense is create against even really good defenses.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Is when you have players that create spatial choices, you
- 5:00Speaker 2: know you can uh, because you know modern defenses, you're
- 5:03Speaker 2: you're really guarding you know, sort of segments of the
- 5:06Speaker 2: field rather than specific players a lot of the time,
- 5:10Speaker 2: and a guy like Waddle is just going to create
- 5:15Speaker 2: different dilemmas for defenses the Broncos didn't create last year.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And look, I know he didn't get many snaps, but
- 5:21Speaker 2: it's easy to see immediately that you know, even his
- 5:25Speaker 2: his long you know, his thirty five yard catch. Pat
- 5:29Speaker 2: Bryant runs a spectacular route on that play that the
- 5:33Speaker 2: corner has to shade and honor it and then Waddle
- 5:37Speaker 2: goes screaming through the met I mean, it just creates
- 5:41Speaker 2: the kind of matchup they didn't create last year. And
- 5:44Speaker 2: that was a big takeaway for me because I've seen
- 5:46Speaker 2: it in practice and that even on plays he doesn't
- 5:49Speaker 2: get the ball, you can see the decisions the defenses
- 5:53Speaker 2: have to make. And you know, I thought operationally, they're
- 5:58Speaker 2: just quicker to the line stream. It's the cricker Alajuddo.
- 6:02Speaker 2: So so far in the preseason, you know, we've seen
- 6:07Speaker 2: the difference. You know, Sean Payton made the change in
- 6:11Speaker 2: play calling for a reason, and you know they've shown
- 6:15Speaker 2: the early benefits of that. Now, you know, you got
- 6:18Speaker 2: to get that to hold up in a November game,
- 6:21Speaker 2: in a September game, All those moments, but right now
- 6:25Speaker 2: you can see why he made why he made that decision.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Is Red Murdoch going to be on this team? Do
- 6:31Speaker 3: you think as far as the fifty three in not
- 6:34Speaker 3: practice squad. I'm trying to think of bubble guys, Jeff
- 6:36Speaker 3: and as you know, and we've laid out for six months.
- 6:38Speaker 3: It's tough, but he certainly seems to pop on game tape.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Again, I always issue the public caveat that fewer guys
- 6:48Speaker 2: that claim than I think will, but I think he's
- 6:52Speaker 2: a guy, a guy like him, Tate's Tasey another rookie.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I think that's those are really hard players to get
- 6:59Speaker 2: through way because they're an awful lot of teams that
- 7:03Speaker 2: don't have the kind of depth the Broncos have. I
- 7:06Speaker 2: believe he's earned a spot in the fifty three. They
- 7:11Speaker 2: have given him, you know, duties in practice that reflect
- 7:15Speaker 2: the guy they intend on keeping. I mean, he's making
- 7:18Speaker 2: all of the play calls when he's in with his group,
- 7:24Speaker 2: and that's a lot of responsibility. And I've been told
- 7:27Speaker 2: he hasn't he hasn't missed many, if any calls. So
- 7:32Speaker 2: if anything, they just want him to cut it loose
- 7:34Speaker 2: a little more as a player, you know, be a
- 7:37Speaker 2: little more free, try not to be so concerned about mistakes.
- 7:42Speaker 2: But it's sometimes hard to tell young players that. But
- 7:45Speaker 2: I think they have bubble players in the offensive line.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I think it's awfully hard to keep everybody there that
- 7:51Speaker 2: they've had in the previous couple of years. I think
- 7:54Speaker 2: they have difficult decisions at safety, Taylor Ratt probably costing
- 8:00Speaker 2: underplayer or roster spot who may have looked like he
- 8:04Speaker 2: was gonna make it, you know, a couple of weeks ago.
- 8:06Speaker 2: So I think wide receiver. They're gonna put players out
- 8:10Speaker 2: there that would that could easily play for other teams.
- 8:13Speaker 2: So I think they have some tough decisions. You know,
- 8:16Speaker 2: they can manipulate a little bit with the two You
- 8:20Speaker 2: got two spots. You can go to injured reserve with
- 8:23Speaker 2: the intention of return before you go to fifty three.
- 8:28Speaker 2: In the past, he's had to keep those guys for
- 8:31Speaker 2: a day. You don't have to do that this year,
- 8:34Speaker 2: So they've got a little buffer there. But you know,
- 8:38Speaker 2: I think they do have bubble players that could end
- 8:40Speaker 2: up elsewhere.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Jeff, let's stay on that defensive side of the ball
- 8:44Speaker 1: here for just a moment, and again we're checking in
- 8:45Speaker 1: with Jeff Legwall to ESPN after the Broncos roundly defeated
- 8:49Speaker 1: by the Green Bay Packers on Friday night, snapping Sean
- 8:52Speaker 1: Payton's eight game preseason win streak. What's the status of
- 8:56Speaker 1: Riley Moss? How is he after taking an awkward fall
- 9:00Speaker 1: and injuring what appeared to be his rib area.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he didn't practice today. You know, he
- 9:09Speaker 2: was walking around, he worked on a side field. He
- 9:13Speaker 2: didn't look like he was grimacing or impeded too much,
- 9:18Speaker 2: you know. Now, you know, I'm sure if you've got
- 9:20Speaker 2: a sore rib, tackling somebody isn't all that exciting of
- 9:25Speaker 2: an activity. Yeah, so I think, you know, it stunned
- 9:29Speaker 2: me if they suddenly decided he's he's going to play,
- 9:33Speaker 2: you know, Friday, in any realm of the universe. But
- 9:38Speaker 2: he did not look like it was it was going
- 9:41Speaker 2: to be uh a too lengthy of a of a
- 9:44Speaker 2: recovery before he returned to practice, at least, you know,
- 9:47Speaker 2: before the opener and and that kind of stuff. You know,
- 9:51Speaker 2: I think Frank from a reserve tackle that was one
- 9:55Speaker 2: he wasn't even on the practice field today, And you know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: I saw him limping a little bit during the game,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and I wondered, But then today he was. He was
- 10:04Speaker 2: not out at all. He wasn't even working with the
- 10:08Speaker 2: recovering injured players today. So I have to see how
- 10:12Speaker 2: that goes the next week or so.
- 10:14Speaker 1: By the way, Jeff, did you think Patrick's or Dan
- 10:16Speaker 1: got jobbed? Should that have been a forced fumble against
- 10:19Speaker 1: Christian Watson to play that Moss got injured on?
- 10:22Speaker 2: I sure thought it was. Yeah, you know again, they
- 10:25Speaker 2: went to New York and they were pretty adamant it wasn't.
- 10:28Speaker 2: But I and that that was worthy of a challenge
- 10:32Speaker 2: and it should have been a it should have been
- 10:34Speaker 2: a forced fumble. But I don't know. I think sometimes
- 10:38Speaker 2: he doesn't. It's like he's the the level of expectation
- 10:43Speaker 2: for him to make a player so high. I think
- 10:46Speaker 2: sometimes I feel like he doesn't get credit. You know,
- 10:49Speaker 2: that he gets flagged for plays he's really made because
- 10:52Speaker 2: it would be rare that someone could do that. Uh,
- 10:56Speaker 2: And I don't think he gets for the reward all
- 10:57Speaker 2: the time for those things.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Well, let's talk about the guy that kind of took
- 11:02Speaker 3: Riley Moss's place anyway, and Chris Abram's drain. It looked
- 11:06Speaker 3: like he was having a bit of a rough night.
- 11:08Speaker 3: What'd the tape tell you?
- 11:10Speaker 2: You know, he's far more comfortable when it's just you
- 11:14Speaker 2: match up on a receiver and and go handle business.
- 11:17Speaker 2: He's really flourishes in those, you know, Man the Man
- 11:23Speaker 2: press Man moments. I think when they go a little
- 11:26Speaker 2: some additional combo coverage and you know, layer some things
- 11:31Speaker 2: a bed, I think sometimes he loses some contact before
- 11:36Speaker 2: he flips his hips, you know, and it gets out
- 11:38Speaker 2: of that title and all those things. But man, he's
- 11:42Speaker 2: he's sure a lot better than a lot of fifth
- 11:44Speaker 2: corners around the league. And like I say, Man the Man,
- 11:49Speaker 2: I thought that snaps were really really clean, and I
- 11:54Speaker 2: think the ones where he did have some issues, I
- 11:57Speaker 2: think he just gives it a little too much cushion.
- 12:00Speaker 2: When they're working some of their combo things, it looks
- 12:03Speaker 2: like man and it's more of a matchup situation.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Leakey, what's the Broncos plan now for Friday night against
- 12:08Speaker 1: the Vikings?
- 12:10Speaker 2: You know, I don't think they even know yet. They
- 12:13Speaker 2: usually the coaches usually have their sit down Wednesday to
- 12:18Speaker 2: iron all that out. What's the rotation? Who needs more snacks?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Who do you want to longer look at. They'll do
- 12:25Speaker 2: that Wednesday. But the vibe I'm feeling from talking to
- 12:29Speaker 2: people is there may be some starters, including maybe even
- 12:33Speaker 2: Bow that where they say, you know what, we've seen enough,
- 12:37Speaker 2: let's just you know, get to this. But you know,
- 12:42Speaker 2: I think he will place some starters. You know, not
- 12:45Speaker 2: everybody will get the night off, but this is going
- 12:49Speaker 2: to be a good last look for some of those
- 12:52Speaker 2: second and thirdeen guys. We need that final view from
- 12:56Speaker 2: the judges as it were, all.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Right, best of luck to those folks. Jeff Legwald will
- 13:01Speaker 1: be there to cover it out in power Field at
- 13:03Speaker 1: Mile High. Reada's latest ESPN dot com. He has got
- 13:07Speaker 1: it all. Good breakdown on the preseason game on Friday night,
- 13:10Speaker 1: latest on the injuries, all of that. Jeff Legwald h
- 13:14Speaker 1: does it all at ESPN dot com. We'll talk to
- 13:16Speaker 1: him again on Friday. Leggy, nice workman, Thank you. All right,
- 13:21Speaker 1: good stuff right there with Jeff Legwald
