- 0:14Speaker 1: yard practice shots. It's a great place to chip and
- 0:16Speaker 1: putt and practice. If you don't have time for a
- 0:19Speaker 1: full round, book your tea time today golf dot Breck
- 0:23Speaker 1: dot org. Golf dot Breck dot org. Thursday is when
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Saints we really got underway. Of course, they played
- 0:30Speaker 1: Monday night football, so the schedules all bumped back a day.
- 0:32Speaker 1: They were back on the practice field, there was media availability.
- 0:36Speaker 1: The first injury report came out. Derek Carr obviously a
- 0:39Speaker 1: DNP for New Orleans, but Darren Rizzy did make it
- 0:43Speaker 1: official that if Carr isn't able to go, which at
- 0:46Speaker 1: this point feels like a long shot, that it's gonna
- 0:48Speaker 1: be what we all think it would be.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Derek's unable to play this week. Spencer Ratler will be
- 0:53Speaker 2: the starting quarterback for US. Obviously, he gave us a
- 0:56Speaker 2: spark this past game in second half, had a real
- 0:59Speaker 2: good practice day to day, so that's where we are
- 1:01Speaker 2: with him.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So the other big question, and that's no surprise, right.
- 1:06Speaker 1: We all saw Ratler play great. He started three times
- 1:09Speaker 1: earlier in the year when Car was out. We saw
- 1:12Speaker 1: Jake Caynder get his opportunity and it was all time atrocious.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Rattler came in, led four score and drives in the
- 1:19Speaker 1: second half. He's clearly higher ceiling. He's the better physical talent,
- 1:23Speaker 1: he's got all the things we've talked about, and he's
- 1:24Speaker 1: got more experience now. So yes, it's the right decision.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I don't think either of these guys will have a
- 1:28Speaker 1: lick of success on Monday night football in twenty degree
- 1:31Speaker 1: weather in snow at Lambeau, but someone's got to start.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I'd rather go get Spencer Ratler all these reps now.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Rizzy was asked though, so this week, what does Car
- 1:41Speaker 1: have to do or prove to be able to play?
- 1:43Speaker 2: All The good news is he had a really good
- 1:45Speaker 2: day today. I think he's got to put a couple
- 1:46Speaker 2: of good days in a row tomorrow or in a
- 1:48Speaker 2: couple good days in a row. As I said, you
- 1:49Speaker 2: guys need to be any week. With the extra day,
- 1:51Speaker 2: we were kind of hoping that that he would gives
- 1:52Speaker 2: some significant improvement. I would say he's gonna have to
- 1:55Speaker 2: you know, by Saturday, probably have to get a practice
- 1:57Speaker 2: in in order to do that. It's been significant time
- 1:58Speaker 2: now he's been down. Want to see him get out
- 2:00Speaker 2: there and practice and go through all the functions, like
- 2:03Speaker 2: I said before, as a quarterback. So but again when
- 2:05Speaker 2: I tell you you guys asked me the other day
- 2:07Speaker 2: or somebody asked me if it was a reach that
- 2:08Speaker 2: he was going to play again the season, and by
- 2:10Speaker 2: no means is it a reach that he'll be back
- 2:12Speaker 2: out there at some point?
- 2:12Speaker 1: Okay, so there's some conflict there, Darren. Rizzy continues to
- 2:17Speaker 1: double down saying it's not a reach. But we continue
- 2:19Speaker 1: to see these reports come out that the report Monday
- 2:21Speaker 1: was from Rappaport that Derek Carr is still a couple
- 2:26Speaker 1: of weeks away from testing contact and if that's the case,
- 2:29Speaker 1: that's the end of the season. So it's it remains
- 2:32Speaker 1: unlikely to see that he would get out there and play.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But Rizzy continues to double down on this.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I have had multiple conversations with Derek. Apparently there's been
- 2:40Speaker 2: a bunch of things written the last few days. Here's
- 2:42Speaker 2: a situation with Derek. Derek Carr wants to play this season.
- 2:45Speaker 2: There's absolutely zero doubt about that. He's doing in here
- 2:48Speaker 2: every day, doing everything that he possibly can from a
- 2:50Speaker 2: rehab standpoint to get himself back on the field. He
- 2:53Speaker 2: had actually his best day today. I appreciate and respect
- 2:56Speaker 2: the fact that he wants to come back and play,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and so therefore that that's why this thing's day to day.
- 3:00Speaker 2: We're not going to put him in harm's way. We're
- 3:02Speaker 2: gonna make sure that he's able to go out there
- 3:04Speaker 2: and function. That's really what it comes down to right now.
- 3:06Speaker 2: When he can fully function and go out there and
- 3:08Speaker 2: function all the duties as a quarterback, he'll be back
- 3:10Speaker 2: on the field. But apparently there was some you know,
- 3:13Speaker 2: reports out there about him being done for the season
- 3:15Speaker 2: and things like that. If he was done for the season,
- 3:17Speaker 2: we would have put him on IR by now and
- 3:18Speaker 2: we would have shut him down. That's just not the case.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I think that makes sense. I also, you also have
- 3:25Speaker 1: to have a reason to put him on IR and
- 3:28Speaker 1: maybe Clyde Edwards ze Layer could be that reason. If
- 3:34Speaker 1: Clyde's gonna play Monday, you gotta sign him the active
- 3:37Speaker 1: roster means someone has to be cut, waved or moved
- 3:40Speaker 1: to IR. I mean, you have to make a roster spot.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Maybe that's Derek Carr, maybe not. And I can understand
- 3:46Speaker 1: from Darren Rizzey's perspective, he's trying to win this job
- 3:49Speaker 1: full time. Derek Carr gives him the best opportunity that
- 3:52Speaker 1: so I get it. One more though about the quarterbacks.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I do want to talk about Carr's future in New
- 3:57Speaker 1: Orleans in the second year because Dan Grasiano over at
- 3:59Speaker 1: ESPN wrote something interesting about the Saints potentially moving on
- 4:02Speaker 1: from Derek Harr after the season, which I don't think
- 4:04Speaker 1: is realistic. But I'll share what Grez had to say
- 4:07Speaker 1: here in just a second. But you know, Rizzy was
- 4:09Speaker 1: asked about the three starts that Rattler had early in
- 4:12Speaker 1: the season and how much he learned from that, how
- 4:14Speaker 1: much he can improve.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I think he learned a lot of things. The thing
- 4:17Speaker 2: that probably impressed me the most of that whole performance,
- 4:19Speaker 2: said there was probably that two minute drill. I really
- 4:21Speaker 2: liked how he under the pressure he performed and I
- 4:24Speaker 2: didn't see a sense of panic at all. I think
- 4:26Speaker 2: I thought the last time the last three games he
- 4:28Speaker 2: was out there, like any rookie quarterback, there was a
- 4:30Speaker 2: little bit of you know, sometimes he looked a little panicky.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I saw him much more relaxed. I saw him much
- 4:35Speaker 2: more in control. I saw a lot more leadership out
- 4:38Speaker 2: of him. And so that that was the impressive part. Now,
- 4:40Speaker 2: you know, maybe coming off the bench with nothing to lose,
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, kind of running around and gunsling. But that's
- 4:44Speaker 2: kind of that's kind of been his thing, right, That's
- 4:46Speaker 2: that's what's made him the guy that he is. It's
- 4:47Speaker 2: kind of been his mo o, his old his whole
- 4:50Speaker 2: his whole career. So hopefully now you know, when he knows,
- 4:53Speaker 2: he's preparing today. So he took the reps, all the
- 4:55Speaker 2: reps today with the ones, and we're going to kind
- 4:57Speaker 2: of get him ready to go. If Derek camp.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I don't think we see Derek Carr again the rest
- 5:02Speaker 1: of this year. That's totally speculative on my part. His
- 5:06Speaker 1: hands fractured in two places. He's a quarterback. You have
- 5:08Speaker 1: to be able to squeeze the ball, hold the ball
- 5:10Speaker 1: through contact. I don't know how that's possible. You want
- 5:13Speaker 1: to numb his hand, fine, you have the same issue.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So he won't be a feel pain. He also won't
- 5:16Speaker 1: feel the ball. I could totally understand Derek Carr wanting
- 5:20Speaker 1: to play next week against his former team, the Raiders.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I just don't. It just doesn't feel realistic to have
- 5:28Speaker 1: a quarterback with a broken hand out there playing. Totally
- 5:31Speaker 1: speculative on my part. It also doesn't feel realistic that
- 5:35Speaker 1: the Saints would move on from Derek Carr after this
- 5:37Speaker 1: year because of the massive dead cap number that they
- 5:40Speaker 1: would have that they would have to own with Derek
- 5:43Speaker 1: Carr if they were to trade or cut him. Plus,
- 5:45Speaker 1: Derek Carr has a no trade clause in his contract,
- 5:48Speaker 1: so that makes that even more more complicated. But Dan
- 5:52Speaker 1: Graziano over at ESPN kind of broke down some of
- 5:55Speaker 1: the considerations for the Saints when it could become could
- 5:59Speaker 1: be with Derek Carr and all this I think is
- 6:01Speaker 1: contingent on Spencer Ratler playing well. If Ratler starts the
- 6:04Speaker 1: next three games and plays very well, then I think
- 6:06Speaker 1: all of this becomes more of a of a realistic consideration.
- 6:10Speaker 1: But Graziano wrote, cars under contract for forty million dollars
- 6:14Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five. Of that ten million is a
- 6:17Speaker 1: roster bony. That's roster bonus that's already fully guaranteed and
- 6:22Speaker 1: will pay out in March no matter what. The remaining
- 6:26Speaker 1: thirty million becomes guaranteed against injury and is fully guaranteed
- 6:30Speaker 1: at the start of the new league year in March,
- 6:33Speaker 1: So if the Saints want to move on from car
- 6:35Speaker 1: after the season, they'd have to release him before the
- 6:39Speaker 1: thirty million becomes fully guaranteed, and again that solidifies on
- 6:43Speaker 1: the third day of the league year on March fourteenth.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Hard to imagine a team trading for Derek Carr, like, remember,
- 6:51Speaker 1: you're not just trading for the player or trade of
- 6:53Speaker 1: the contract. Why would a team give you an asset
- 6:56Speaker 1: to take on this awful contract for an aging player
- 7:01Speaker 1: that's a bottom middle tier to upper lower tier quarterback.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Carr would also have to waive his no trade clause,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and there's not really a lot of reason for him
- 7:14Speaker 1: to do that. So for the Saints to save money,
- 7:18Speaker 1: he would have to be designated as a post June
- 7:20Speaker 1: one release, and they could save thirty million dollars by
- 7:24Speaker 1: deferring his salary to twenty twenty six. So that helps
- 7:27Speaker 1: you this year, but again you're still gonna have a
- 7:30Speaker 1: massive number for Derek Carr that follows you around, and
- 7:33Speaker 1: then you look at twenty twenty five, the Saints are
- 7:36Speaker 1: already about sixty three million dollars over the cap for
- 7:42Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. I look, if you had a team
- 7:46Speaker 1: that was willing to do a deal to trade for
- 7:48Speaker 1: Derek Carr, that would be awesome. I just don't think
- 7:50Speaker 1: that's realistic. And I also don't think it's realistic that
- 7:56Speaker 1: the Saints are gonna eat fifty million dollars in day
- 8:00Speaker 1: cap money to not have Derek Carr on the team.
- 8:05Speaker 1: What is more likely, more plausible is that cars around
- 8:09Speaker 1: for next year. Hopefully Spencer Rattler plays really well over
- 8:15Speaker 1: these next three games and can be your guy next year.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Derek Carr is just a really expensive backup in the league,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and then you just figure it out after that, You
- 8:24Speaker 1: release him after twenty twenty five, and you figure out
- 8:27Speaker 1: what your long term future is going to be. But
- 8:29Speaker 1: it makes it much easier when you have a starting
- 8:33Speaker 1: quarterback on a rookie contract. What you cannot do is
- 8:38Speaker 1: continue to perpetuate these awful fiscal habits and practices of
- 8:45Speaker 1: kicking the can down the road, which everybody says, you
- 8:49Speaker 1: can't continue to perpetuate that, because you're never going to
- 8:51Speaker 1: get out of this situation if you keep doing that.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So the best thing to do, yes, if someone wants
- 8:57Speaker 1: to trade for Derek Carr, awesome, I just don't see
- 9:02Speaker 1: somebody willingly giving you top dollar for your old JALOPI.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's just not realistic in life. So I mean, ask
- 9:12Speaker 1: yourself that if Derek Carr were on another team, would
- 9:16Speaker 1: you want your team to trade for Derek Carr and
- 9:18Speaker 1: his contract? Of course not so unless if someone's gonna
- 9:24Speaker 1: give you an asset to take on Derek Carr in
- 9:26Speaker 1: his awful contract, which would be awesome, but that's not
- 9:28Speaker 1: gonna happen. You Grinn and Barrett for another year with
- 9:32Speaker 1: Derek Carr, and you find your future in twenty twenty six.
- 9:36Speaker 1: The possibilities, and I could certainly appreciate Dan Graziano trying
- 9:39Speaker 1: to explore them, I just don't think any of them
- 9:40Speaker 1: are realistic.
