- 0:00Hello and welcome to another episode of the Christian.
- 0:03We podcast. Today's guest is an actor,
- 0:05director producer all the way from Florida in the United
- 0:08States. His name is Dennis Malin,
- 0:10welcome to the show. Dennis, how you doing?
- 0:12Thank you. Thank you, Christian.
- 0:13Thanks for having me on, I appreciate it.
- 0:16And looking forward to most robust conversation with you and
- 0:20Manchester England, huh, beautiful out there?
- 0:23Yeah, I'm not actually originally from here.
- 0:25I actually moved here two years ago.
- 0:27So from London, as is very much. It's fight anytime you get
- 0:32someone online from the UK, not always, but it's always like,
- 0:36but you from London, okay? What it's like, Florida.
- 0:41You know, I live in Central Florida, but the majority of
- 0:44people are from somewhere else. And when I first came down here,
- 0:47but down here, seven years, and I've got this northeast, New
- 0:51York, New Jersey accent. And so I stick out, I stick out
- 0:55anyway and they're like, so where you from New Jersey, New
- 0:59York? Yeah, we can tell and it's funny
- 1:02because you never imagined, Florida people having a Southern
- 1:05accent but Lo the people have a Southern accent and it's just,
- 1:09it's interesting. One of my, one of my buddies.
- 1:12He says he's a fourth generation Floridian and we did a public
- 1:17service announcement. He's he's big into the
- 1:21Agricultural and there's like a local wine bar.
- 1:25We go to months. Served Wine Bar.
- 1:27It's it's the Last little hangout joint down where I am
- 1:33and it's so much fun, so we get together.
- 1:35One night, I come in and I am dressed whatever, and I'm in a
- 1:38good mood, you go. So, what's going on?
- 1:40I go mad set a great dinner. It's like, all right, what I go?
- 1:43I grilled up a great steak, had a bottle of red and now I'm here
- 1:46hanging out, he goes, well, you know where the state came from
- 1:50right? I got ya Supermarket, walked in
- 1:54bought it. When I bought the bottle of red.
- 1:56He's like no, no, let me educate you, son.
- 2:00And where it comes from. So yeah, with it, within a
- 2:05matter of hours and a few other get-togethers, he schooled me,
- 2:10long story short, the name of the commercial is surviving on
- 2:132%. Now, in the colonies over here,
- 2:17there's two percent of American farmers that are left.
- 2:22So, 2 percent of American farmers, 33 feet, 300 million
- 2:27people in this country. So it's Dying business industry.
- 2:33So we did this commercial with this public service announcement
- 2:36that I'm really, really happy with and really just educating
- 2:40not only our youth but people like me because I mean I go to
- 2:44the supermarket credit card get a nice slab of slab of beef.
- 2:48Go home cook. It drink a bottle of red rock
- 2:50and roll you know so it was really eye-opening so you just
- 2:55you just never know what you're going to learn and what you're
- 2:57going to do and Via the business that were in.
- 3:01I've had so many so many great experiences Christian where I've
- 3:04opened my eyes and I've learned so much in a short period of
- 3:08time, you know, have you found throughout the years that you've
- 3:13been approaching projects more with that in mind?
- 3:17Because I have to say, like I've only just started acting like in
- 3:212019 and originally I was just like, take anything, right?
- 3:26But then, as I began to start, Only cultivating the brand with
- 3:30the podcast and everything I do online.
- 3:33Yes, I realized. Oh, no.
- 3:36Like all of this is a brand and anything you do or your name is
- 3:41attached to ultimately reflects on you, even something, which is
- 3:45not someone's fault. Like, let's say, you do a movie
- 3:48or a TV show, and the director is involved in some nefarious
- 3:52things or says some outlandish statements, your name is then
- 3:56attached to that project, and then you're like, you kind of
- 3:59Fall under criticism a little bit.
- 4:01Yeah you can try and distance yourself but ultimately you'll
- 4:04connect it to that but you just part of it.
- 4:07Yeah. But I just wondered like is that
- 4:09something you've always been conscious of or is it just
- 4:11something as you got older that you like more sort of fixated on
- 4:14or level still there. I've always been conscious a
- 4:17brand and kudos to you for identifying that so early in
- 4:21because you know, you're a business owner.
- 4:24So you represent Christian re that is your brand Represent.
- 4:29Dennis Malin. If you look at my body of work,
- 4:33I like characters that are broken.
- 4:36I like characters that are really stretch characters, so it
- 4:39kind of puts me in an interesting.
- 4:42I'm not going to say predicament but an interesting position
- 4:45because I love what I do so much and I'm very busy doing what we
- 4:49do. I rarely say no, I rarely say no
- 4:54because I've never been the type of guy even as a child, I can't
- 4:59sit still. I can't stay at home so I do
- 5:03tell you get it made me take it again.
- 5:06So yeah, yeah. I don't know, you know, I've got
- 5:09a few years on you. There was no add back in the
- 5:12day, there was no Riddle and back in the day, so I can't sit
- 5:17home, watch Tom and Jerry. I gotta go out and run around
- 5:19play with the guys and gals. So I keep myself busy be that as
- 5:24it may. I really haven't had any issues
- 5:28per se. Now, I like to volunteer a lot
- 5:31of my time. Now we live in a pretty
- 5:33interesting culture and we're doing a we're doing a veteran's
- 5:38commercial next month, I want to do stuff for the, for the, for
- 5:43Animals. I want to do stuff for children
- 5:45different. You know, st.
- 5:46Jude's, and different things like that.
- 5:49I'm not an activist by any means.
- 5:52I'm not political by any means. I mean, the only people that
- 5:56know, my political opinion are my cat's.
- 6:00And when I'm wrong, they let me know.
- 6:02And when they agree with me, they let me know and they're
- 6:05very split. I've got a pretty split house,
- 6:07my Dowager cat, she's 8 years old and my kittens 9 months old.
- 6:12So they're very, I've got a conservative.
- 6:14I've got a liberal and you've got kind of be in the middle if
- 6:18you would. So it makes it, it makes it very
- 6:22interesting when I'm on set, it's business, you know, and
- 6:28that's what it's all about. But I'm not there to be a, some
- 6:30not there to talk this. This, that, that I just, I'm
- 6:35there to work, and it's a very different mentality.
- 6:38I had a huge audition yesterday. I, I've gone to to Cattle Calls
- 6:42in my entire life. One was 25 years ago for a Woody
- 6:46Allen film and I met Woody Allen and soon-yi and and I got cast
- 6:52in a movie about us home in New York.
- 6:55Thanks. I'm in New York and Smee.
- 6:56A 10,000 other people, so who knows?
- 6:59And I stand in front of Woody. I smile.
- 7:01Give my head shot and I got the call two days later there was.
- 7:05That was it? I didn't ask you to do anything,
- 7:07right? Say nothing sir.
- 7:09No sir that? Yeah, it was it.
- 7:13I don't know. Crazy.
- 7:14What was it? What was what was would he like,
- 7:16was he nice? Was he irritable?
- 7:18Was he? I don't know from what I
- 7:21remember he was late and If Ever I remember he was sitting there
- 7:26and he had Sunni next to him. And this was 25 years ago,
- 7:32right? So it was one I was bloodshot
- 7:35and his hair was perfectly Askew and you know it's it's Woody
- 7:40Allen. Hmm he could have asked me to
- 7:43bark like a dog. I would have barked like I mean
- 7:45it's Woody Allen man come on even just to be in front of
- 7:49greatness and you know the man that was good enough for me.
- 7:53I didn't have to get cast in anything but there he is like
- 7:57and all he could do was smile. I think he asked me something.
- 8:00I forget I forget exactly but I already heard was next.
- 8:05Okay, got it. Did you get to get nervous?
- 8:08So Starstruck in that moment or was it?
- 8:10I I I've learned early on, I've been on set early on at a young
- 8:17age with a lot of stars a lot of a-listers and if I went Gaga I
- 8:23get kicked off set. Hmm well if I like, oh my God.
- 8:27It's Christian. Reeve.
- 8:28Oh my God, I wish someone would say that it's a yeah.
- 8:35Record that you play that over. If you're easily plate, where
- 8:39you go. But but, but that's so.
- 8:41So, I'm on the set of celebrity. I'm working right next to
- 8:46Kenneth Branagh now. Oh, well, she is.
- 8:48Which is my man. That's if I need a master's
- 8:51class, I watch Kenneth Branagh. Now I turn on Hamlet for four
- 8:56hours and I've got a large coffee and a notebook and I
- 8:59just, I'm just transfixed. I'm taking notes.
- 9:03I was on was an extra antenna by Christopher Nolan and yassi kind
- 9:08of front of played the villain in that movie.
- 9:10Yeah and I I don't know if I knew he was like I knew Robert
- 9:14Pattinson was in the movie and I saw him.
- 9:17I saw a bunch of them on set but I remember so I don't know.
- 9:23I was just sitting. No, I was basically at the
- 9:26beginning of the movie there's like an auditorium, this
- 9:29Auditorium is in Estonia for those who don't know.
- 9:32Happened to be living there at the time happened.
- 9:35To start writing songs with the way Universe works.
- 9:39I was just, I don't know, I was dressed as like a steward I
- 9:44think and I'm just looking at stage and we're waiting for the
- 9:48maybe know how it is. You're waiting for the next
- 9:50shot. You waiting.
- 9:51That's a big part of acting for anyone.
- 9:52That doesn't know if you want to get into acting expect to wait
- 9:56around. A lot, you should be patient.
- 9:59Yeah. Anyway, looking at the stage.
- 10:02Age and Kenneth Branagh just walks on and he's just like, you
- 10:06know, suited and booted. Just chatting to know them a
- 10:09little bit and I'm just like wow, you know, but at the same
- 10:17time, I get what you're saying as well.
- 10:20Yeah. You do have to nip it in the
- 10:21bud. Yeah.
- 10:24Well, because keep in mind, keep in mind.
- 10:26I worked in Manhattan. Okay, so you can walk by and see
- 10:31anybody? Okay, now I learned early on,
- 10:35you need to respect their time because they're human beings
- 10:38just like you. And I do mind, you Japan.
- 10:40See, put on might be a lot more expensive, but they're still
- 10:43human beings, right? So even if you see them on set
- 10:46and I do that all the time, Al Pacino.
- 10:50I've worked with mr. Pacino.
- 10:51Three times just integer. Yes, you were in The Devil's
- 10:55Advocate. Yes, sir.
- 10:56Which stars? Yeah, Keanu Reeves and Al
- 10:58Pacino. I really want to know about
- 11:00that. What was that like for you?
- 11:01I mean Al Pacino like One of the best actors of all time, right
- 11:07here. You know.
- 11:08So I might ethnicity, I'm Irish Italian, Brazilian.
- 11:12Whenever I went over my time grandfather's house, Christmas
- 11:17Easter st. Patrick's Day, Festivus, the
- 11:20Godfather's on TV. The good thing, it's just, it is
- 11:24what it is somebody. So I was Devil's Advocate was my
- 11:28first everything, it was my first sag feature and here, I
- 11:32am. Bright-eyed bushy-tailed, I'm a
- 11:34kid. I get picked out of the crowd to
- 11:36be an extra now. It's a big courtroom scene and
- 11:39and you know the whole dynamic. I've got mr.
- 11:42Pacino sitting right behind me. I've got Keanu Reeves in front
- 11:46of me Craig, tea' Nelson to my side and it's a big courtroom
- 11:50scene now. Being an extra, you always have
- 11:52to have an attention, you don't sit there You have any attention
- 11:57you, you're intrigued. You're like you're talking to
- 11:59the guy down next to you Taylor. Hackford was a was a director.
- 12:05He was married to Helen Mirren. I don't know if they're still
- 12:07together, they don't return my calls, but great guy.
- 12:10Great guy, big Viking guy. Now, here I am nervous as it is.
- 12:15It's my first everything in comes mr.
- 12:18Pacino. Now you've been on set.
- 12:21You could hear a pin drop. How many times I said, he heard
- 12:25a quiet? Well, maybe after somebody yells
- 12:28Here Comes mr. Pacino.
- 12:29You can hear a pin drop and you don't look, you don't stare at
- 12:33the sun, you're going to go blind.
- 12:35I turn over my shoulder, and I'm like, okay, so all right, Taylor
- 12:43calls action, and they're doing their thing goes, cut you and
- 12:47you out the two extras next to me, we're just sitting there
- 12:51stoic. You you out.
- 12:53He goes, no, no. You're And I'm like, wow, so I
- 12:57dip over my shoulder and mr. Cena goes, it's all right.
- 13:01Kid, you know, I'm like, huh? It's all right kid and it's the
- 13:07voice of God saying just just show up fine and I was like oh
- 13:13my gosh so at the end of the courtroom coming out, there's
- 13:17two doors. I came out the far door I pivot
- 13:21and I'm walking right into the camera.
- 13:24I'm mugging the camera. I've got five seconds by myself
- 13:29and then everybody else bust out Christian, I'm thinking myself,
- 13:32I'm going to get caught, I'm going to be on the edit room
- 13:35floor. I'm doing what you shouldn't do.
- 13:37I'm lugging the camera. So here I am walking the camera
- 13:40on my big ugly head. I'm in the whole frame Keanu.
- 13:44Reeves out, you know. Craig, T Nelson bust in front of
- 13:46me and we're all walking, but I've got five seconds and again
- 13:50I'm thinking I'm never going to see it.
- 13:53I saw the movie in Arkansas with my mother now Devil's Advocate.
- 13:59You ever you ever hear the movie Rosemary's Baby?
- 14:04Classic movie thousand foot view.
- 14:09The devil spawn is born. Rosemary's, the mother
- 14:13Rosemary's Baby. Okay.
- 14:15So that's my mother's generation.
- 14:17That kind of that movie. Imagine Rosemary's Baby has
- 14:20grown up to be a New York City attorney.
- 14:23No. Oh, by the way, I've seen the
- 14:25movie. Yeah, I'm big fan.
- 14:26Yeah, yeah, okay, but these phone with my mother watching it
- 14:32and that's Keanu. Reeves, could have been
- 14:34Rosemary's, Baby that 25 30 years later is now a lawyer in
- 14:39Manhattan, who knew? Yeah, that's how I'm sitting
- 14:41there with my mother. I didn't know who was really a
- 14:43horror flick. She's got out and there I am.
- 14:47I big ugly had this big. It's a, it was hysterical, man.
- 14:52The first time you You big ugly mug on the big screen, you'll
- 14:55like this is cool. Nobody knows who you are, but
- 15:00this is pretty cool. So amazing when God, it's hot.
- 15:05Did you get to talk to mr. Pacino or shakes hand or
- 15:09anything or was it just tell ya, the ad side of that brief
- 15:13interaction. It's not like he knows I exist.
- 15:20Yeah, right. Well, I mean what a great movie
- 15:24mean. Pacino's monologue towards the
- 15:28end alone was just amazing. I've tried to emulate that
- 15:32monologue many times and even Keanu Reeves, I mean, I love
- 15:38Keanu Reeves. I mean he's the most wanted man
- 15:40in Hollywood, and it's like anything else.
- 15:43The question I always ask the question once, do you want the
- 15:46Academy Award or do you want the money?
- 15:49And I said, yes. Hmm.
- 15:52Yes. Do you want the money or the
- 15:55egg? Yes.
- 15:56Well, what do you want? Yes, why not now John Wick might
- 16:01not win the Academy Award, but okay, are you worth to three
- 16:05hundred million dollars? What do you, what do you want to
- 16:07do? And when you love what you do,
- 16:10right? You not working a day in your
- 16:11life. I have to say, like, I mean, I'm
- 16:15not anywhere near like a professional like yourself.
- 16:17I mean, I've only really done short films commercials and a
- 16:22few extras in, you know, a few That's how you start a
- 16:27Christian. Yeah.
- 16:29It's like for example like you you probably had like what you
- 16:33definitely had that formal Trend.
- 16:34I've never had that account for that, but anyway, my point is
- 16:39that Because people have asked that about me similar questions
- 16:44to me as well like all what would be your goals?
- 16:46What would you want to achieve? And the more and more, I do it
- 16:49like recently I got back into after like quite a long break
- 16:53and I just I just loved it. I loved being on the set and I
- 16:57remember did a short film the other day and it's improvised
- 17:04everything which I love. I personally I find it easy.
- 17:07As long as you give me a day to be, you know, you know what?
- 17:10It's like a recipe. You know, where you're going
- 17:12with it kind of thing. Yeah.
- 17:13Yeah. Give me the premise of it, you
- 17:16know, give me the room to improv.
- 17:18Yeah. And we started, you know, I met
- 17:21the guy that I was acting alongside and within 10 minutes
- 17:24were up in each other's faces screaming, and giggling,
- 17:26motional, and all this, and the directors just cut into this
- 17:30like, oh, wow. Wow.
- 17:34That was amazing. And we were just to me, in my
- 17:36head, I was like, oh, that's just Tuesday, you know?
- 17:40And then I thought I didn't say that I was thinking in my head I
- 17:43was just like, yeah, it's acting and then I thought about it for
- 17:47a second, I was like, oh man, I love this.
- 17:50This is I feel alive when I do this and I think that when
- 17:54people ask you those questions like, come on, you wouldn't do
- 17:58anything. And, like, in life job wise
- 18:00without the intention of making money, of course, you want to
- 18:03make billions who doesn't right, but like like when you look at
- 18:07those really Actors that probably made their Millions.
- 18:11Like, he only reads, would have been a millionaire very early
- 18:15on, right? Sure.
- 18:16Speed. Right.
- 18:18But it keeps making movies. Why does he keep my ring?
- 18:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:21What why? What's the compulsion?
- 18:23It's because of the love of acting of taking on a character.
- 18:28Like you said earlier that for you, you like to take characters
- 18:32that are broken and and and work with that and and that that was
- 18:36actually a question. I want to ask you as well as
- 18:38Like, when you're doing that, like, are you tapping into
- 18:44personal experiences with that? It always is that and just an
- 18:47area, you're able to tap into easily, because I can say, for
- 18:50myself, when it comes to, I like to play villains really like,
- 18:57you know, flawed villains or just general pardon my language
- 19:00assholes, you know, I just based that people, I've met over the
- 19:03years and Etc, is that I can see you playing that.
- 19:06The pretty boy love interest. Do it.
- 19:09Maybe it's a stretch right? I could do it.
- 19:13Like I'm up for any role to be honest.
- 19:16I'm busting your chops down now but it's fine.
- 19:18It's fine. Like, I like that.
- 19:20I think that I keep thinking about this David Bowie interview
- 19:24from years ago and I always think about this.
- 19:27Like he says the best place to be is like With your head, just
- 19:33above the water and your feet are just about touching the
- 19:38floor. And that's the spot.
- 19:41You want to be in perpetually as far as the comfort zone is
- 19:43concerned. Wow, you know, I like that.
- 19:47But anyway, bring it back to yourself like yeah.
- 19:49Do you tap into real experiences or why those particular roles?
- 19:55Sure. Well, I want to answer one thing
- 19:57at a time. You know, you're 100%, right?
- 20:00My father, Dennis senior, adore, my father, obviously, he, we
- 20:05lost him a few years ago, I'm sorry, he would always say, You
- 20:09know, clean Eastwood, Clint Eastwood's 91, he still making
- 20:14movies. How much money, how much money
- 20:16do you really need? I don't understand.
- 20:18And I realized, well, Dad, it's not about the money, he loves
- 20:23what he does. When you love what you do, you
- 20:26don't work a day in your life. So it's a different mentality
- 20:30from middle-class blue-collar, or white-collar employees, it is
- 20:35what it is. So you're able to create, it's a
- 20:37different lifestyle. It's a different mentality
- 20:39altogether. The byproduct of what you do is
- 20:42getting paid. Now you can be you can be as sag
- 20:46extra your entire life and have a good existence.
- 20:48Well you know, we don't you know, you don't go to the gym
- 20:53with me. Not the intentions of at least
- 20:56getting stronger, right? You're you're in this field.
- 21:01It's like being on set. And, you know, it's like you,
- 21:03Jim, you do improv you're exhausting when you're done,
- 21:06why? Because it's your gymnasium.
- 21:10It's your Jumpin around. You're hitting those weights,
- 21:12you're doing your thing, it's your gymnasium.
- 21:15Now, I learned early on that, I'm a method actor.
- 21:19My first everything was Of Mice and Men, I was Lenny.
- 21:23And I've only taken two courses in my entire life and I'll work,
- 21:27we'll Circle back on that. Yeah, well, so I learned that
- 21:30I'm a method actor, because I would drive home from Manhattan,
- 21:33after doing, Lenny, and I'm exhausted, and I'm crying, and
- 21:37I'm depressed at. What the heck is going on here?
- 21:41And I was married at the time, and I came in just so distraught
- 21:47and I did 10 shows. And after ten shows, I'm like,
- 21:50screw this. I quit, I quit.
- 21:52I I don't like this feeling. I quit.
- 21:54Well, talking to my mentor. Jim demonic.
- 21:57Jim used to teach at the American Academy of dramatic
- 22:00arts and sciences and Jim looks like Robert Baratheon from Game
- 22:04of Thrones, okay? So you sure, you got, you got
- 22:07the reference, okay, love him. Dearly, we're both Freemasons,
- 22:10great guy, great friend. And he's like, well, obviously
- 22:14you're a method actor and I'm like, Jim, I don't know what
- 22:16that means. I don't care.
- 22:18I'm out. Of course, I got back into it
- 22:21two weeks later, what? It's not that.
- 22:23That I had, it's not that I was beaten as a child.
- 22:25It's not that I wanted for much of anything as a child, you
- 22:29know, just a middle-class Scotch-Irish Town Kearny.
- 22:34New Jersey, Soccer Town, USA, with the high school, with a
- 22:39bunch of Olympians, Tony Meola, John harkes harkes, I believe
- 22:45hark, son plays for Mu Manchester, I may be wrong, my
- 22:50apologies, if I am if he Play, they should get him because he's
- 22:54a great. He takes after Dad, I saw a clip
- 22:58clip of him on YouTube, really talented kid, but who knew, but
- 23:04it's kind of instinctual and I was on the show a few months
- 23:06back, a different podcasts. And we're talking well, how do
- 23:09you tap into that man? You can go dark real quick.
- 23:13You can cry man. You just so evil looking and I'm
- 23:16like, well, thank you, thank you very much.
- 23:19Thank you very much. Are the Academy Oscar goes to
- 23:23Thank you, but it's instinctual. It's instinctual.
- 23:27I can do a table where you can give me a script now, and I will
- 23:30give you so much energy, regard, wherever it's supposed to go.
- 23:35And you could feed, we can feed off each other real quick.
- 23:39I did this movie chances. I guess about a month and a half
- 23:42two months ago now. It is dark, it is dark, it is
- 23:46deep. I get the script and we do a
- 23:48table, we would do a rehearsal, just two actors just mean this
- 23:51kid, David David Aldean. Young guy.
- 23:54It was his third everything and he's all nervous about it.
- 23:57I'm like look. Relax, we're going to do about
- 24:0250 different takes. Don't worry about being off
- 24:05book, we're going to be fine. Don't worry about your
- 24:08character. I'm going to give you, I'm gonna
- 24:10give you enough energy, you're going to love me at the end or
- 24:14you're going to want to beat the shit out of me and he didn't
- 24:17have they didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about and
- 24:20I'm like, we got this covered and what happened.
- 24:23Now, he's like my best friend and I think I got the poster up
- 24:26on Facebook recently, it's a dark dark.
- 24:29Movie Die, which I'm excited to see.
- 24:33Awesome. Awesome award.
- 24:36It comes to method acting. Do you sort of pursue the whole,
- 24:40keeping it with in character, the whole, the whole time.
- 24:43So, like even outside of actual filming, you're still in that
- 24:47character mindset or I'm not Dad.
- 24:50I know, I know mr. Pacino.
- 24:53When he did donkihote got darker hotei when he's off stage, she
- 24:57still Don Quixote. I need to do something physical
- 25:01to get out of the character. So, if we're on, for 23 days,
- 25:05you know, three, four days straight, I try to stay, but in
- 25:11order to shake it off, or to get out of it, I need to change my
- 25:14physiology. I need to hit the gym.
- 25:16I need to swim. I need to run.
- 25:18I need to do something because look at, look at some of the
- 25:22great method actors of late over the past 10 years, Heath Ledger
- 25:28Rest in peace. Philip Seymour Hoffman, rest in
- 25:31peace, Robin Williams. Rest in peace now even even back
- 25:36then I enjoy my single malt scotch but I never got into
- 25:40anything too deep or anything. Let's say in the various you
- 25:44know I mean it is what it is. I'd rather do something more
- 25:47physical to not harm my instrument rather than enhance
- 25:52my instrument. You get that you understand
- 25:55that? Because it's tough.
- 25:58I mean, when I'm on set between takes I'm off on my own little
- 26:02corner by myself. It's not that unsociable.
- 26:06And I explained that, you know, to The Ensemble, the people I'm
- 26:08in the scene with, I'd rather be in my own little head.
- 26:14Be my own little space, so I can maintain our odds is to sit in
- 26:18my chair and close my eyes. You know?
- 26:20And people think I'm napping, I'm not napping, I'm just
- 26:23staying in a state. That when you're ready, I can
- 26:26give you that. Energy.
- 26:28I can give you what you need because it is straining.
- 26:32And that's I I train a lot, you know, to kind of be able to give
- 26:38the director what they want and keep that energy level.
- 26:41Haha, awesome. It makes sense to you, you're in
- 26:45the business. So that's you know but it's not
- 26:48it's not all that easy. I had a rehearsal, excuse me, I
- 26:51had an audition yesterday and I read for three different
- 26:54characters and you know Each each of the sides took you on an
- 27:00emotional Journey. So, I'm thinking okay, well,
- 27:04here's a, here's a married couple, and the guy obviously,
- 27:08is, it isn't paying attention to his wife.
- 27:11So, here's a, here's a turd tearjerker moment.
- 27:14So I'm going through it, and then I take a few beats, and
- 27:17then I go right for the heart. Strings.
- 27:19Boom. And when you have the cast and
- 27:20directors cry, when you make the casting directors, well up in
- 27:25tears and they're like You just go?
- 27:29Yes. I guess and afterwards I went up
- 27:32to thank them that. It's thank you and I was like,
- 27:38you know, but it's not fake. It's truly being in that
- 27:46character being in that moment and giving them what they want
- 27:48and really wowing them. And I really you know when you
- 27:52love what you do man, it's just you know Christian it comes
- 27:55across and you have fun. So couldn't agree more.
- 28:00What advice could you give to aspiring actors people like
- 28:05trying to get into the industry? People that are such as myself,
- 28:08who are kind of just thrown for the fences?
- 28:11Praying at what were most? Could you give run fast the
- 28:18other way? Get your degrees, get a Jo B.
- 28:24Now, I, I do Mentor, new actors. As I take on kind of to every
- 28:30like every 36 months, okay, you've got to run it like a
- 28:33business, you've got to know it's a business if you have that
- 28:38business mentality. Now I have unique background you
- 28:43know I was a young.com executive.
- 28:47My I come from my mother was an opera is an entrepreneur, you
- 28:52know? So I've always I have a
- 28:55different mentality and as we were discussing, Singer, Lee
- 28:58your brand, you've got to manage your own brand because you are
- 29:02the, the brand. You are what your marketing.
- 29:06So I tell everybody up front, no, your business plan, what do
- 29:12you want to do in this business? Are you just looking to make
- 29:14some part-time money, terrific? Are you looking to do with
- 29:18nights and weekends? Great, is it a passion?
- 29:20Do you want to do stage? That's terrific.
- 29:23What do you want to do? Know I've had a game plan early
- 29:27on, and when I was Younger Christian in the business.
- 29:29I'm sorry. Shut off when you mail.
- 29:31It was me and about 10 million other guys and gals and I knew
- 29:36if I could maintain some sort of you know working every other
- 29:40week every week in about 10 years from now that 10 million
- 29:46guys and gals, right? They're going to drop out and
- 29:49there's only going to be a few of us remaining outside of that
- 29:53if I can just maintain and stay steady.
- 29:56You see that's my business plan. Because back in the day, all I
- 29:59got was young dad and young businessman.
- 30:02I could never get the Calvin Klein model.
- 30:04I can't, I can't see why but I just never got that.
- 30:07You got that good-looking smile on those beautiful eyes.
- 30:11And no, I'm not, not hitting anybody me, but here's the
- 30:15thing. No, what, you know.
- 30:18Okay, build your network, build your reputation, because
- 30:23everyone's watching. Whether it's a short, whether
- 30:28it's a commercial, whether it's a feature, you don't know who's
- 30:32looking at you every time. I'm on set, one project begats
- 30:37another project because the DP the cinematographer might be
- 30:43looking at, you know, back back in their mind.
- 30:45They're thinking Christian be perfect for this.
- 30:48I'm just writing the script. All I get to put Christian in
- 30:51touch with this, with this person, so you never know.
- 30:54So, it's important to work to build a good relationship.
- 30:58Be professional. Tom Hanks, says, you got to show
- 31:03up early. If you're on time, you're late.
- 31:05If you're on time, you're late, yesterday's audition was 1:00.
- 31:09I showed up about 11:30 and I'm just I take my time in my space,
- 31:14you know, you've got to be off. Hook.
- 31:17If you show up on set, you got to be solid and know your lines
- 31:22and then you have to bring 10 to 12 different ideas, but that's
- 31:26part of the advice. Being young and in the business
- 31:30you've got to get in front of every camera.
- 31:33Any camera every chance you get no job too big.
- 31:36No job too small. You're going to do some
- 31:38freebies, you're going to work you know and and do some some
- 31:42overnight shoots. You got to pay your dues but you
- 31:47know it's going towards something.
- 31:48I use the analogy. As I said a few minutes ago,
- 31:51it's like going to the gym. The first time you want.
- 31:55You walked into the gym. Do you do bench press 250
- 31:57pounds? You probably did.
- 31:59God bless you. I certainly can't.
- 32:02I've been training one way shape or form.
- 32:03Since sophomore year in high school.
- 32:05If I was doing 65 85 pounds, that's a lot but I'm doing the
- 32:11Reps. I'm getting stronger.
- 32:12I'm building. Same thing with acting.
- 32:15You've got to go through the Reps.
- 32:18Nice, it's amazing. How much we have in common as
- 32:21far as how we see this business. I couldn't agree more.
- 32:25I'd say exactly the same way. Dawn asset recently, I said to
- 32:30this guy we were just doing extras work for some commercial
- 32:34in Asia or something. I don't know.
- 32:36It was a lot of fun, we were just bantering, you know, as
- 32:39soon as the cameras on business you know but we did something
- 32:42right because fun story as soon as I got on set, I'm told I have
- 32:47a speaking role in a bump up the pee.
- 32:49I'm like, oh great. And then this the director comes
- 32:51up to me right bear in mind. I'm dressed suited and booted.
- 32:54I'm just like, I'm at a wedding. Like, that's so good.
- 32:56I'm dressed, right? I need you. he comes up to me
- 32:59and he just goes, hey, you like a cameraman and I'm like But he
- 33:06might as well just slap me or told me that face for radio.
- 33:09You know, it's that kind of moment and I just, I just turned
- 33:12to the guy I was with it. As I, of course.
- 33:14He said that. Yeah, it was fun.
- 33:15And I just walked around with like, a cam literal camera from
- 33:18the 1980s that wasn't even plugged in, it's hilarious.
- 33:21But anyway, the reason I bring it up, when we were talking, we
- 33:26got chatting about, you know, like different projects, why we
- 33:28do acting etcetera, you know, and ice.
- 33:31And this is my comment mentality.
- 33:33Is I always look at it's like three.
- 33:35Things every project I have three consideration point before
- 33:39I take it on firstly, a like where is it going to be seen?
- 33:44You know, who's going to be seen excetera?
- 33:46You know, I've had offers to go on TV shows and I decided it
- 33:51didn't fit with the brand, it went against what I was trying
- 33:53to do. Yes, you'd be on TV and people
- 33:56have said to me, why didn't you go for it?
- 33:58You know, you would have been on TV but it's like it's not
- 34:02putting yourself in the you're not presenting yourself in the
- 34:05right. Way, that's correct.
- 34:06Was it reality TV? Yeah.
- 34:08Well, no, it was some sort of Dating show or whatever.
- 34:12Yeah, dating is, here's the thing and kudos to you for
- 34:16identifying that because reality TV shows and no offense to
- 34:20anyone is the death knell of a series actor.
- 34:25I think it's death knell to Serious active.
- 34:27I was on, I was on set of the man in the white van and and
- 34:33part of my family, the casting was amazing.
- 34:35I didn't mean to cut. You short want to give you a
- 34:37quick analogy. The casting was amazing.
- 34:40I'm 61, my wife was 59. Our daughter was 56, brunette
- 34:45brunette brunette. We look like the good Lord
- 34:49planted us together and we were of the same DNA.
- 34:52It was great. Casting, the daughter has 6
- 34:56million, Instagram followers, and stuff like that.
- 35:00So she did that because she she got that because she was part of
- 35:04Dance Moms back in the day, a reality TV show, okay?
- 35:07And she said herself, she's more personality now and it's tough
- 35:11to get get different roles. I did a movie gray people with a
- 35:16guy that was on love island or one of those shows and the
- 35:22movies coming out and I'm like, you look familiar.
- 35:25You goes. Yeah, look different clothes on
- 35:27it, and that's not what I'm saying, brother.
- 35:29That's out. I'm Saying, I ain't looking at
- 35:32you that way, son. But it's just, it's just funny.
- 35:36I'm glad. And I'm like, dude, you're
- 35:38lucky, you got this role and I just you know, from talking it
- 35:42to my manager, there's a lot of ucg stuff out there.
- 35:47There's a lot of reality shows out there but it's like anything
- 35:51else there's always changes in the environment, right?
- 35:56If it weighs heavy this way it'll come back around Just
- 36:01maintain what you doing. You're 100% right.
- 36:03We get calls every day. Hey we want you to be that lead
- 36:06actor in this in this indie or or this or it can you help
- 36:10reduce this? And just like you said, the
- 36:12first question I asked her first two questions.
- 36:15Is this a passion project or do you want to go conquer the
- 36:18world? Is it going to be for your own
- 36:22edification? You're going to watch it 20
- 36:24years from now your grandkids or are we going for the further?
- 36:28Friggin Oscar? What are you doing?
- 36:30It's a totally different mentality.
- 36:33You know. Now I were I work with friends
- 36:35and kind of do a favor here and there but I'm here, just like,
- 36:39just like you are to further your career and to get the
- 36:43bigger roles and to and to get that brass ring and the push the
- 36:47ball forward, you know. So The question we had a we had
- 36:52a zoom meeting last week. With a writer.
- 36:57Thank you was from Vegas and his manager from like La whatnot.
- 37:01And that's the first questions I asked up front, you know, what's
- 37:06the end game? Because again, from a business
- 37:09planning perspective, begin with the end in mind, what are we
- 37:13looking to achieve? What we're looking to achieve
- 37:17well, and then what's the budget?
- 37:19Well, we have a million dollar budget, in ten million dollar
- 37:21budget. We have a hundred thousand
- 37:22dollar budget, terrific, The Blair Witch Project was shot in
- 37:27Florida. Okay.
- 37:28You know, you get the analogy by bunch of I noticed respect, I
- 37:33believe they're Florida. Florida Gators.
- 37:37I'm probably going to get that wrong.
- 37:38Get chastise in Florida, but what was that budget?
- 37:42And what did they go on to make? Oh, I don't know a million times
- 37:45more than what they put in. But that you never know
- 37:50lightning strikes in Hollywood. Once maybe twice, I've got
- 37:54unlawful duties. It's a short that I did.
- 37:57I actually did it as a favor, so nail Kanani writer director,
- 38:02producer, calls me up. Hey Dad, how you don't know?
- 38:06I work with Sunil, I worked with Christopher Vox.
- 38:09This great people, great friends because again that Network that
- 38:11friendship of, Hey, Dad, how you do a great man.
- 38:14Hey, I see, you've been busy yet.
- 38:15Thanks to Neil what's going on, can't Do me a favor.
- 38:19Yeah, what do you got going on? You have anything going on this
- 38:21weekend? Now pretty open.
- 38:24I was gonna like sleep, catch up on sleep.
- 38:26Maybe hit the gym. Hey man, I got Christopher Von
- 38:29and he's in here from Vegas. Can you help us out this short?
- 38:33Sure, brother. Whatever you need, I went up
- 38:35there. I got the script one up there.
- 38:37I worked with Chris before we did a read and there was this
- 38:41bang, There was a Synergy. Well, we laid it down.
- 38:44Unlawful duties, has 1 million views on Amazon Prime,
- 38:50Congratulations. 1 million views.
- 38:53Thank you. Who knew, hmm, Killer Miller my
- 38:57first Western. Now last year's this time I had
- 39:00bigger hair. I had like, I was like an 80s
- 39:05prom, girl, if it was, my hair doesn't grow, longer has high,
- 39:10and if I pulled it out, it be down about here, but it was just
- 39:12curl, it's on. IMDb I did kill a Miller and RJ,
- 39:17Hendrix, writer-producer calls me up and And I did the audition
- 39:20for him and it wasn't sure if it was 1890s or 25:9 because I
- 39:25didn't know what era would you like, the timber in my voice and
- 39:30you like to scowl on my face and you like how it like, like my
- 39:34real. So, he goes to me goes, you know
- 39:37how to ride a horse, right? Yes, sir.
- 39:39Yes, I do. When do we shoot?
- 39:44We're going to shoot when you start principal shooting, six
- 39:46months from now. I can go learn how to ride a
- 39:49horse. I did that.
- 39:51Killer Miller has 140 film festivals and I garnered three
- 39:56best actors from it. Oh, congratulations.
- 39:59My point being, you never know? Hmm.
- 40:01Daddy. We're back.
- 40:04Dramedy that I did down here two years ago.
- 40:07Now, we got picked up by two networks so you just you just
- 40:12never know. So my advice to newbies.
- 40:17Do everything, throw enough stuff against the wall and see
- 40:20what fits see what sticks. You never know, would you say
- 40:23that you get the majority of your rose through building those
- 40:27connections, or do you still have to spend a lot of time,
- 40:30auditioning and reaching out to people?
- 40:32You know? It's a combination prior to
- 40:35working with Rebecca, Rebecca Meehan my manager.
- 40:38I people would ask me, you know, like, oh my gosh.
- 40:42Dennis, you're so busy. What's the secret?
- 40:44Well, 70% of my Rose came through me and my networking and
- 40:50my put my name out there in my auditioning.
- 40:53Am I building relationships? So yeah I had outside of that
- 40:58cattle call yesterday I five auditions so now I don't check
- 41:03the auditions Christian I just tracked the winds.
- 41:06You know. I mean I don't track you know
- 41:09how many times how many reps I've done?
- 41:11Okay. I just track you know, with the
- 41:14my purse Personal gain. All right.
- 41:18My French Press is got up from this to that and in 23 months.
- 41:22Great. I don't count how many reps and
- 41:25how much pain I've gone through. I can't the winds, so keeps my
- 41:30mind. Focus on the success.
- 41:32Now, could it be 100 auditions, 2-1 win?
- 41:35I don't know, but it's part of the process, it's part of the
- 41:39process. And that's what I focus on right
- 41:44now. Today is February. if we are at
- 41:48130 percent of or yearly goal, now that's from voiceovers,
- 41:53that's been doing podcasts National commercials that's from
- 41:58being in features, we're crushing our yearly go So again,
- 42:03back to be a business person and have your business plan, what
- 42:07are you going to focus on? See, you can wake up today and
- 42:10you can decide it's going to be a great day.
- 42:12It's going to be a poor day. You can decide you can decide if
- 42:17you're going to lose this day and it's going to slip away and
- 42:19you're going to putz around and do nothing.
- 42:22Or you've got a purpose and things.
- 42:25You're going to do to move the ball forward, because there's
- 42:28only two things you can really manage in your life.
- 42:30What are they? Your attitude and your work
- 42:33ethic. Think about it, everything else
- 42:35around you, man is noise, you know, we all have noise in her
- 42:39life. How do you choose to deal and
- 42:41put up with that noise? That's the differential.
- 42:45That's a differentiator between you and somebody else you being
- 42:50successful in the other person, being not successful.
- 42:54And I'm not I'll never get on a podcast or anything and say,
- 42:59look at me, I'm going to lighten be now I'm not working for
- 43:02correct. I'm a Everyday work in progress,
- 43:05man. And that's, that's what keeps me
- 43:08focused. Keeps me.
- 43:09Humble keeps my head down, and lets me grind, you know, and
- 43:13that's, you know, working with Rebecca.
- 43:16I've always, I've always said, I had a manager and stuff like
- 43:19that prior to her and I said, look, if you can work hard, if
- 43:24you can work. Half as hard as I can for
- 43:27myself, we're going to make a ton of money.
- 43:29We're going to have a lot of fun.
- 43:31She is where I can. She's giving me a run for my
- 43:33money. And I'm loving it.
- 43:35I'm loving it, man. I'm just so happy and so blessed
- 43:39right now. It's just, it's amazing.
- 43:41It's fun. What's the best acting advice
- 43:46you've ever received from another actor or, you know,
- 43:49producer-director Etc, be sincere, be yourself.
- 43:57Show the director something. When I first came down here, I
- 43:59did beauty is skin-deep. Joe Davidson was our director
- 44:03Jennifer Phillips writer. I met Jennifer at an audition
- 44:09and she kind of, she sends me a text message, like, six months
- 44:12later. Hey, got a role for you.
- 44:14I want to book you, I didn't know who it was.
- 44:16That was sending me this text message.
- 44:18Could have been Scorsese Tarantino cousin Phillips.
- 44:22I don't know. So so when you read that text
- 44:25message, You got two decisions to make quickly, I'm sorry.
- 44:30Who are you or? Hey, thank you so much.
- 44:33I'm looking forward to it. Hey, thank you so much.
- 44:36I'm looking forward to it. And then taking who's that and
- 44:40almost say oh can you send me the details via email?
- 44:45This is my email, then you get their name.
- 44:47Just yeah. We that that's what I'm here
- 44:50for. Thank you so much.
- 44:54Love and kisses. You're I appreciate you Rara and
- 45:00that, oh, by the way, and then you eat.
- 45:03It's like, oh, I'm on set and I'm doing it kind of It kind of
- 45:13an intimate scene and I'm in a tuxedo and, and I'm a, I'm a
- 45:19divorcee. I'm a lawyer.
- 45:22I'm a real prick. It's, I can play those
- 45:24characters pretty well. So I'm in my tuxedo me my black
- 45:28tie and what adjusting myself looking at my watch and we're
- 45:31late for my party. So my new wife at the time, he
- 45:37had a name, it'll come to me. My apologies.
- 45:39She comes to me touches me and I turn around and I'm barking at
- 45:43her. And I'm just, I'm just, I'm just
- 45:46yelling. I'm just being totally acerbic.
- 45:50I'm barking at her and barking at my stepkids
- 45:53bah-bah-bah-bah-bah, Joe comes up to me.
- 45:57And she looks at me, he goes then you look great, your voice
- 46:02man, your booming, you have such presence.
- 46:05You just you you shine on the screen and looking at him, he
- 46:11owes trying to do the scene a little more intimately.
- 46:17And I look at him for five seconds.
- 46:21And I got and it would snap. So, instead of being all like
- 46:24we're late. What she touches me, I turn
- 46:28around, I grab her hands. I look at her and it went so
- 46:33intimate. You know, instead of being that
- 46:37guy I was that guy change the scene dramatically and we did, I
- 46:45don't know, but it doesn't take sore.
- 46:46So we got done in the Pas coming up to us and asking us how long
- 46:51were married for. We guys are obviously a couple
- 46:54how long you been married for? No, we just met each other, six
- 46:57hours ago. Oh yeah.
- 47:00So in talking to Joe afterwards and talk to Jennifer after that,
- 47:05They're like, well, you know, obviously you've got such a
- 47:08great instrument, try to do things a lot more intimately.
- 47:13And that's out of that, I've received great, you know,
- 47:16feedback you know, throughout the years and stuff like that,
- 47:20but you just never know. And it was such a great scene
- 47:25and you need to go, big first and foremost because if I didn't
- 47:30show Joe that Dimension and that range and that Timber, you
- 47:36wouldn't have known where to take me, you know?
- 47:39So he took me, he took me down and I was able to interpret
- 47:43Interpret exactly what he meant because a lot of times it is
- 47:48frustrating from an actor because you don't know what they
- 47:50want for say because they don't know how to communicate or they
- 47:54just don't communicate. You're trying to you're trying
- 47:57to stay in your head, you try and to give the director
- 48:00something and you're like what do you think was that good?
- 48:03Oh yeah, yeah, that that's great.
- 48:05Just keep doing what you're doing.
- 48:07All right, all right. Cool.
- 48:10You know and you never know how things are going to happen.
- 48:13I did a student film at Full Sail College, okay?
- 48:18And I had to cry and I had a cry and I had a cry and like like I
- 48:24said, check out some of my work. I can go there.
- 48:27My eyes are red and snotty. I'm just wet.
- 48:31So we did 20 takes Oh my God. Now, you now hear the story.
- 48:38I'm going to tie it all together.
- 48:39Now, the instructor was busted in the directors chops.
- 48:43Definitely busting his chops. So here I am.
- 48:46The who's the guys? Christian, Brazilian guy,
- 48:50sweetheart of a guy, great guy. He's in the gurney, he's in the
- 48:54stretcher. And after the eighth take, I've
- 48:58got nothing left in the tank and it's not that it's ten different
- 49:02angles. It's straight on.
- 49:04Its Wait up. So you already got the close up.
- 49:07You really got this angle. I can't I got nothing left.
- 49:11Yeah, so I saw the guy He was an add at a Star Wars Cantina,
- 49:18shoot, two months ago now and he remembered me and I, you know,
- 49:25Dennis, how are you? Good to see you again.
- 49:27I hope they get this guy's of, no, good, you know.
- 49:30He killed tried to kill me two years prior and he's like,
- 49:34Dennis. Hey, how are you?
- 49:35Hey, I got a knew you were coming.
- 49:38Look, we're going to do this with you.
- 49:40You're going to be, you're going to be spotlighted.
- 49:41We got the upgrade Lala Yeah. And like hey man, thanks, how's
- 49:45school going? What's going on?
- 49:47Hey, what kind of in between things?
- 49:49But great. Great, great, thank you so much
- 49:51for coming out. That is just such a great actor,
- 49:53you know? You such a great guy.
- 49:55Dot dot dot, dot dot where I'm thinking, you know, good son of
- 49:59a, you know, keep your shit together because you never know
- 50:04when it's going to come around. So I'm basically, you know, I'm
- 50:09highlighted in the Star Wars, Cantina, shoot, shoot, so you
- 50:14Never know, you never know. It might be a little arduous on
- 50:17your journey, but people remember and people come around
- 50:22and you never know who you're gonna see tomorrow.
- 50:27So keep your shit together, keep it together.
- 50:30Speaking wanna go off keep it together.
- 50:33Speaking of which, I mean, even if you've had quite a lot of
- 50:39experiences in pretty major Motion Pictures, But I want to I
- 50:44want to focus one on one. That's obviously a bit closer to
- 50:47your heart as far as your upbringing and Heritage Etc.
- 50:51You were also on the Irishman. Sure.
- 50:55Chad an amazing cast. What can you tell us about your
- 50:58experience working on the Irishman?
- 51:01Sure well I was I was in a Victorian Hotel in Miami and my
- 51:08scene was set in the 1950s. So I was basically wearing the
- 51:14clothes of my grandfather would wear and you can just imagine
- 51:18mean the pants are up to about here, right?
- 51:21I had a fedora going on. I had a button-down bowling
- 51:24shirt. I just I loved it.
- 51:27And I was really, I was channeling my grandfather and I
- 51:31came out of this beautiful car. This beautiful car and I was a
- 51:36union delegate. So you got you, my car pulls up
- 51:40and No, it was a 56 or 64, it was such a gorgeous car and I'm
- 51:47getting out of it. And I got my hat on looking
- 51:50around, you know, taking my presence and I'm walking into
- 51:53this hotel. And whenever you're on set, you
- 51:56know, two days to weeks to months, you always build an
- 52:00affinity with the cast. You always build friends.
- 52:04Now I wasn't on set with the principles, okay?
- 52:08But you build relationships and You know, we had a few
- 52:12curmudgeons, you know, that no one's ever going to work with
- 52:16again but hey, you never know. Yeah, I mean things happen.
- 52:21Thanks, honey. But it was such a great
- 52:24experience. You know, you working with a
- 52:27top-notch casting you working with with top-notch costuming
- 52:32and everything like that. They basically, I went down for
- 52:35a haircut for wardrobe and they they they buzzed me up.
- 52:39They gave me a 50 style haircut. I think the picture pictures on
- 52:43IMDb. They baked three different
- 52:46products into my hair, like A put in this gel and they're
- 52:50just, you know, blow drying and then they put something else and
- 52:53it took me like two days to get the stuff out.
- 52:56Oh well, it was hysterical. I looked like Johnny Marr.
- 53:00No, Johnny, Johnny Rotten from The Sex Pistols.
- 53:02I I pulled it all up. It was standing about this high.
- 53:05It's just like it was hysterical.
- 53:08It was hysterical, I drove home that way, you know, but it's
- 53:12just, it's so much fun. Three and a half hour movie.
- 53:15You get to work with the principal.
- 53:18When you say principles, do you mean like the main actors?
- 53:20The main cast, is that what you mean?
- 53:22Okay. So, you know Janeiro Pesci.
- 53:24So you didn't actually get to see them doing their thing out
- 53:27with Darcy know they'll bear and I honestly didn't watch the
- 53:31movie. Okay.
- 53:33Three and a half hour movie. I I met the author of the book.
- 53:36It's based on the book, I hear you paint houses.
- 53:40So I read the book great book. Now being born and raised in New
- 53:46Jersey in the shadow of giants. Giant football stadium.
- 53:50That's where Hoffa is buried. Nobody knows, nobody knows to
- 53:55this day where a phase. So somebody does just like who
- 53:59shot JFK. Somebody knows but you know
- 54:02whatever I won't know in his lifetime and I'm not going to
- 54:05waste time caring but switching it on the Big movie front.
- 54:11You were also in Jumanji the next level, which obviously
- 54:15features The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, amongst others.
- 54:21What was that? Like, that must have been
- 54:23something different. I work with Kevin Hart and I'm
- 54:2861 and Kevin's five foot nothing.
- 54:31Yeah, he's such a sweetheart. It was just, it was so much fun.
- 54:35I was the the second husband, if you would And it was just, it
- 54:41was just so much fun. Obviously I'm, you know, I'm
- 54:43white obviously, Kevin's not, obviously, I'm tall, Kevin's not
- 54:48and it was just, I don't know if it was more improved, but it was
- 54:52just kind of my presence there and I really full disclosure.
- 54:58I really don't watch my work per se.
- 55:00Hmm, you know, unless I'm forced to go to a premier and stuff
- 55:04like that. So I'm not sure if I made it in
- 55:07the in the Final Cut or not, but it was just so much.
- 55:10On. It's just you know, in if you
- 55:13respect people, they respect you.
- 55:15If your, if your prick then you know they have an award you.
- 55:20It's a Kevin's like a humble guy like no ego or anything like
- 55:23that. I don't know if he's a humble
- 55:24guy or an ego guy but he was just fun.
- 55:27Yeah, but he comes on set. He gives me one of these.
- 55:33Okay. Yeah.
- 55:35You know I like blessed mr. Hart.
- 55:37Dennis melon damn. Glad to meet you.
- 55:40Yeah, it was like a hundred people a days and maybe you were
- 55:54in one of my favorite movies which gets a lot of hate, but I
- 55:57don't care. You were in the 1998 version of
- 56:00Godzilla. Sure.
- 56:02Which most people like to laugh at and I understand why.
- 56:06But one key thing I remember about that movie is Just lots of
- 56:12rain just and I don't know if that's artificial, or if I don't
- 56:16back conditions. What was your experience working
- 56:19on that? Were you close to getting
- 56:22hypothermia? I don't know what was it like
- 56:24working here before. You know, it wasn't, it wasn't
- 56:26that bad at all. It was done during the summer.
- 56:28And it was basically my scenes are on Wall Street.
- 56:31And, you know, Matthew Broderick Hank Azaria, the great Hank
- 56:37Azaria, the great Matthew Broderick, So I was picked out
- 56:42of the crowd, okay? I have an act and, you know,
- 56:46it's definitely a blessing. I got picked out of a crowd, so
- 56:50I'm standing in the iconic scene where the mayor is addressing
- 56:56the crowd, okay? And I thought I was just a
- 57:00stand-in, we're here I am. You've got the George Washington
- 57:03statue and I'm right here. Now, I'm figuring.
- 57:07I'm a stand-in, just just for the angles.
- 57:10So here's the camera angle, it's on it's it's like this way it's
- 57:14not straight on. So I've got all this room to
- 57:17play. I've got all this room to play.
- 57:20Now, note to self and no to everybody else.
- 57:23Always know where the camera is. Yes, always know your angles
- 57:26because you know, I might add a frame over here or am I right
- 57:30here in frame? Okay.
- 57:32So I had this camera angle and I quickly made my own attention.
- 57:36I'm not security. I'm a councilman and what a
- 57:40good. Counsel people do Alderman.
- 57:42Whatever. What?
- 57:43Right I'm blowing. Kisses to my constituents.
- 57:48I'm waving to my constituents, I'm playing this up.
- 57:51I've got all this room to play now.
- 57:53Whether the director is going to keep me in or not I'm playing it
- 57:58up. I'm showing here.
- 57:59I'm showing the director something.
- 58:01Well, here comes, here comes the principal, the mayor, and God
- 58:05forgive me. I forget his name.
- 58:06So they kept me in and they kept the same angle.
- 58:10So the guys cracking jokes, he's cracking wise, and of doing my
- 58:14thing and I'm laughing at his jokes.
- 58:18You to me and I'm waving my constituents, some blow kisses.
- 58:22And what do you hear? Boom.
- 58:26Boom. You remember the see I you know,
- 58:29Godzilla's coming up Wall Street, boom.
- 58:32Cars are bouncing. That was Hydraulics, and then
- 58:36it's like, all right? Okay, second action, run?
- 58:39Right up the stairs. Well, right behind the mayor,
- 58:42and we're running up the stairs. And here comes Godzilla look
- 58:44back, you know, so it was, it was just.
- 58:49So, it was just so much fun. Here's the thing.
- 58:53I haven't, I haven't acted in England yet.
- 58:57I'm sure there's a big pool of people.
- 59:01I'm sure it's a big Community but it's also a small community
- 59:05because everybody knows everybody in New York as large
- 59:08as it is. Everybody knows, everybody
- 59:11Florida. Atlanta is even smaller and
- 59:14everybody knows everybody. So when you're on set, you've
- 59:18got to be professional but you're going to build
- 59:20relationships. Yeah.
- 59:22When I first came Come down here.
- 59:24Now, got my New York relationships.
- 59:26Got my New York, agents, etc, etc.
- 59:28When I'm down here, I'm like, all right.
- 59:30I need to rebuild. I release.
- 59:32I need to expand. So, I did some stuff for Disney
- 59:36and I'm like, okay really isn't what I want to do in life.
- 59:42No offense, but I'm going to be a Disney extra and I learned
- 59:45from people, they ask the right questions and I didn't say,
- 59:49well, I'm 25 years in the business.
- 59:51I was just cool about it. And I'm like, well who's a good
- 59:53Agent down here? Who do you recommend?
- 59:56And I just got networked and I just built my network big-time
- 59:59really quick and I was able to replicate what I've done in the
- 1:00:03New York and a bigger Market in smaller market.
- 1:00:06And I've just grown exponentially, you know, and
- 1:00:09I've been able to keep busy through, you know, through the
- 1:00:12dark days through the code of times M.
- 1:00:15And now I just we've got a lot of great stuff on the horizon,
- 1:00:20and it's just we're really in A good place right now.
- 1:00:24Why did you actually move from from New York to Florida?
- 1:00:29So it's quite a big move state-by-state.
- 1:00:32Obviously, as you mentioned, there are different networks and
- 1:00:35everywhere that you go. But looks that's big.
- 1:00:38Big step. Why the move?
- 1:00:39Well, I always came down to Florida on vacation.
- 1:00:42I've got family any east coast and I always went to vacation on
- 1:00:46the west coast. So I was down here three or four
- 1:00:49times a year anyway. You can go and you can act any
- 1:00:54way you want me back in New York.
- 1:00:55It's a two and a half hour flight.
- 1:00:56If you want me in l.a., it's a five-hour flight six-hour flight
- 1:01:00so it really doesn't matter where you live per se.
- 1:01:02Okay, I've always wanted Florida, tired of the snow.
- 1:01:07I'm burned out of the snow. I was looking for a change as
- 1:01:11that. I was at a point in my life,
- 1:01:13where really doesn't matter where I live per se, it doesn't
- 1:01:17matter. I'm going to keep busy.
- 1:01:19I'm going to keep the same worth work ethic.
- 1:01:22And go anywhere. I mean, if I went to, you know,
- 1:01:24Wichita Kansas, I'd still be networking, still be working.
- 1:01:28So, we do my thing, but it snows in Wichita.
- 1:01:31So, and I came down here, I've got family down here and I kind
- 1:01:36of wanted to Foster and rebuild a relationship and, you know,
- 1:01:39kind of. So, from a personal and a
- 1:01:41professional perspective, it was, it was the time to make a
- 1:01:45move and it's seven years later and I'm still, I'm still having
- 1:01:49fun. I've been to New York, you know.
- 1:01:52Prior to the pandemic, I've been in l.a. working prior to the
- 1:01:56pandemic. I actually was booked for two
- 1:01:58big jobs in l.a. right before everything.
- 1:02:01Hit the fan. All right?
- 1:02:04Before covid. It the FED.
- 1:02:06Whoo. Yeah, that's what it is.
- 1:02:09Isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:02:10Moving it Forward. One thing I didn't ask you
- 1:02:14earlier, which I'd like to ask you about now, is, as you
- 1:02:18mentioned earlier, you used to be like at a tech CEO you
- 1:02:21involved in. Business and stuff.
- 1:02:22Now, obviously, it's very clear that you got into acting
- 1:02:26because, you know, you're passionate is what you want to
- 1:02:28do excetera, but it wasn't your first thing that you did, you
- 1:02:32were pursuing business. You were successful at it.
- 1:02:35I've got two questions for you here.
- 1:02:37So, that one why make the switch?
- 1:02:39I mean, you were a CEO and I've looked into your, you know, the
- 1:02:43other stuff that you did and you did as late as 2017.
- 1:02:46I believe. So you you've kept that going,
- 1:02:49you've kept hustling being an entrepreneur because I mean B5,
- 1:02:52once businessman, always bismuth.
- 1:02:53And I think it's just the mindset.
- 1:02:55Yeah, sure but yeah. One why the switch the dramatic
- 1:03:00switch and to like, how exactly did you get into acting?
- 1:03:05Where did they begin for? You, sure.
- 1:03:08Well, you know, back in the day, well before my birth, and
- 1:03:12before, my parents were married, my mother used to sing at
- 1:03:14Carnegie Hall. So my mother was in one aspect
- 1:03:18of the business and I wanted to get into it when I was 14 15.
- 1:03:21In 16 years old. And when we were going to make a
- 1:03:24foray into the business, I came down with chicken pox.
- 1:03:28So imagine being 61, I was on the lightweight rowing team.
- 1:03:32I was 140 pounds. Now I'm like 190 195. 140
- 1:03:36pounds. 6 foot 1 Crew, cut chicken pox.
- 1:03:42Not looking too pretty. And I'm like, all right, it's a
- 1:03:44sign from above, you know, it's not going to work.
- 1:03:49So here I am and I mentioned Jim demonic earlier.
- 1:03:53James. Ronald demonic jr.
- 1:03:54That's his name is demonic. It's just, it is what it is.
- 1:03:58Great guy looks like Robert Baratheon, Christian guy.
- 1:04:03Okay, that I know, yeah, and we totally hit it off.
- 1:04:08We're in the same fraternity together in the same Lodge
- 1:04:10together. And we'd meet Manhattan every
- 1:04:13Friday for a scotch and a cigar and at show from work and I'd be
- 1:04:18in a two-piece three-piece suit, you know, and every time I walk
- 1:04:21in is a guy, look at this kid, he came from Central, Casting
- 1:04:24Olivia, what a good-looking guy and like, all right, beat me up,
- 1:04:28beat me up, beat me up. And, you know, we started
- 1:04:30talking, he goes, you know, have you ever thought about, you
- 1:04:34know, making a move. And I've always had a passion
- 1:04:37for stuff. I've always had a passion for
- 1:04:39that, you know, you try to Figure out what your calling is
- 1:04:43early in life and, you know, you have success and, you know, your
- 1:04:46blast and you're working hard and I've always been the type of
- 1:04:49guy I've always been able to put my head down and just grind, you
- 1:04:54know, whatever noise is going on in my personal life and my
- 1:04:57private life. If I'm able to segment it and
- 1:05:00just put my head down like one aspect does not negatively
- 1:05:04affect the other aspect. So after you know, many a scotch
- 1:05:10and a scar would James I've asked him.
- 1:05:12Okay. Well, what do I need to do?
- 1:05:15You need to get a headshot, the hell's a headshot, a picture.
- 1:05:18All right, who do I call, Bam, he had a phone number for me to
- 1:05:21call I called. Oh yeah, Jim said, you'd be
- 1:05:23boom. I get a head shot.
- 1:05:25All right, I got a headshot. What now, you need to learn how
- 1:05:28to read commercial cup. What the hell is commercial?
- 1:05:30Copy commercials who put me in touch with New York performance,
- 1:05:34Works Angela Montalbano, which is another good friend and a
- 1:05:37mentor Angela has been in the business or entire life.
- 1:05:41And she's kind of retired but I still keep in touch with their
- 1:05:44own Facebook, what a great influence and Italian woman from
- 1:05:48New York. Setting you straight in the
- 1:05:51beginning, okay? Can you in the butt teaching you
- 1:05:54what you need to do? Best experience I had.
- 1:05:57So I get all that stuff done and then I just slowly start.
- 1:06:02You know, I did all of mice and men, as I said earlier, my first
- 1:06:06audition China Airlines and I went out there.
- 1:06:10I did the audition. I felt very comfortable.
- 1:06:14Pat Sweeney was the casting director at the time and she
- 1:06:17goes. Okay guys.
- 1:06:19Relax, you're a bunch of Technology Executives here.
- 1:06:23The set hear me out. You're about to technology
- 1:06:25Executives. You just how you just helped the
- 1:06:28company from China relocate to the states Christian.
- 1:06:32I did that six months prior I'm thinking this is surreal.
- 1:06:37So now it was me being young as I was at the time and 61 and a
- 1:06:42lot of shorter gentleman that were follically challenged and
- 1:06:46I'm like, what am I doing here? I don't, I don't fit in with all
- 1:06:50this. I sat in the middle of the table
- 1:06:52took my space and she goes just talk to me and she goes action
- 1:06:56and I just started talking to her referencing him, referencing
- 1:06:59him going back and forth. And, you know, when you nailed
- 1:07:03something you walk out of this And year 2 which is taller.
- 1:07:06You're like your chest is popular.
- 1:07:08You nailed it. And you know when you have it
- 1:07:11and I walk down there and like I nailed it.
- 1:07:14So I forgot about a to call two days later from Pat Sweeney's
- 1:07:19office. Hey, we want to book you, you
- 1:07:21know, on these days we're going to pay you x ray.
- 1:07:23Who's your agent? And I'm like, can I call you
- 1:07:28back? Yeah.
- 1:07:29Jim who's my agent call? This guy gave me name of the big
- 1:07:34agent. Oh, the guy.
- 1:07:37Yeah, Jim said expect and I gave him my information.
- 1:07:41And he goes, what do they offer? No, no, no, we're going to get
- 1:07:43you double that. Yes, sir, thank you sir.
- 1:07:47And literally, I showed up on set, I was off book, makeup
- 1:07:53wardrobe, the whole nine. I'm the principal and now mind
- 1:07:57you. It's my second experience.
- 1:07:59It's my first commercial audition that I booked my first
- 1:08:02audition but my second experience.
- 1:08:05Acting all together. So, we lay down the first take
- 1:08:09and the director goes cut back to one.
- 1:08:13I look to the PA, I'm like, What does that mean?
- 1:08:17Oh, going to do it again. We're going to do it again.
- 1:08:20Oh yeah, we can do 10 takes from this angle and the attention
- 1:08:25that I'm like. So if I screw up and I'm
- 1:08:27thinking Christian, I'm thinking I can do this, I can do only
- 1:08:32this, this I can do stage your pants, fall down, you better
- 1:08:37keep going. Stage, you got something hanging
- 1:08:39out of your nose. You better keep moving.
- 1:08:42Here, I can screw up and we can do it.
- 1:08:46And I'm like, well this I can do this, this is going to be fun.
- 1:08:50A lot to this as well. Sometimes certain that directors
- 1:08:53I've worked with, sometimes I'm the one begging them to do more,
- 1:08:56takes that? Because they're like, yeah, no,
- 1:08:57I'm happy with that. And I'm like, no, I'm not happy
- 1:08:59with that. I want to go again like.
- 1:09:00Yeah. Get the bill take like yeah.
- 1:09:03Yeah, you're 100% right II joke. It times.
- 1:09:07A lot of energy directors are you know, I'm Dennis Mound,
- 1:09:10three takes and we're done. Well, I'm just wrapping up on
- 1:09:14the third take. I got more in the tank.
- 1:09:17I got more to give you you know. So it comes down to the
- 1:09:20collaboration and the director, you know, it obviously, hey know
- 1:09:24that all my got Circle. That that oh yeah, great take.
- 1:09:28Hey, can we do it again? No, no, we're good.
- 1:09:31We're moving on. Yeah, but no, no, we're all
- 1:09:35right. So I kind of had to take in that
- 1:09:41short term not told you about earlier.
- 1:09:43And I felt like I think it was about five minutes in total and
- 1:09:49the beginning dialogue, but bear in mind, the whole thing's
- 1:09:51improvised that's awesome. The thing is like it started.
- 1:09:58Not very well bit awkward but then I fell into what we were
- 1:10:02doing and then it was good and I was like Andrew.
- 1:10:05Yeah, it's like can we do it again and then what?
- 1:10:08Yeah, we're talking with you again.
- 1:10:09We'll take him and then I kept asking and I kept asking and if
- 1:10:13we just never did it. So there's a take where half of
- 1:10:16its yeah and half of it's very good.
- 1:10:19So I don't know. But I mean, it's whatever that
- 1:10:22because the director is going to have their own vision and yeah,
- 1:10:25everyone. But I think for me Because it's
- 1:10:28like a product, isn't it? Everything that you do you know?
- 1:10:31Yeah you're gonna have bad takes but you don't want their only to
- 1:10:33be bad takes you want it to be like good stuff.
- 1:10:36So that it represents you well and you know, it works for the
- 1:10:40director to because you it's as you said, it's a collaborative
- 1:10:43effort. You want it to be the best that
- 1:10:45it can be and hopefully you have the director.
- 1:10:48That knows how to communicate, right?
- 1:10:50And you know, look you'll bring your own ideas.
- 1:10:54And if the director doesn't communicate what they want,
- 1:10:58you're going to go with watching your mind and how you broke, how
- 1:11:01you broke down the script and how you're going to do you, you
- 1:11:06know, and you know, when your huddle with the director and
- 1:11:10the, in the cinematographer afterwards, and like cool.
- 1:11:12So, what do you think all that? That's awesome.
- 1:11:15That's amazing. That's all right.
- 1:11:17Well, you know. Hey, cool, you know what?
- 1:11:20That's out of that you hope that you have some collaboration.
- 1:11:24You understand what they're looking for and they can
- 1:11:27communicate that to you while on set.
- 1:11:30You know I mean if you leave actors to our own Wilds, you
- 1:11:35know, we're going to, we're going to keep going and we're
- 1:11:38never going to be happy me. The worst thing to do is to do a
- 1:11:41self tape. Audition at home, that's the
- 1:11:44worst thing because I know, you know, use the cell phone, set it
- 1:11:48up, got my studio, got my tripod and I would keep, I wouldn't be
- 1:11:53satisfied with the 20th, take. So I've got a rule to myself.
- 1:11:57I'm doing three takes I'm giving you three takes period.
- 1:12:02Excuse me, I'm doing three takes.
- 1:12:04I'm going to add it. Give you the third and that's it
- 1:12:06because I don't know what you're looking for.
- 1:12:09And you're going to, you're going to grab it within the
- 1:12:10first five, ten seconds. Anyway, so I've Got The Look and
- 1:12:15I'm not tripping over my tongue, you going to, you going to put
- 1:12:17me, but if you don't like me to purchase five, ten seconds
- 1:12:21you're gonna move on it, just like a real.
- 1:12:22It's like a Sizzle reel. Nobody has time to watch two
- 1:12:25minutes. They're going to capture the
- 1:12:27first 30 seconds and If you can, bang them up front and a 30
- 1:12:31seconds and while them they're going to book you.
- 1:12:34That's it. Great advice, thank you so much
- 1:12:37for this. You're welcome brother, you're
- 1:12:38welcome. Speaking of directors and
- 1:12:41directing obviously, as I mentioned at the beginning of
- 1:12:44the podcast, you're a director and producer.
- 1:12:47What can you tell us about these roles and the key things that
- 1:12:50you've learned through doing them?
- 1:12:52Sure, I was kind of Hoodwink to be an assistant director.
- 1:12:55I I don't you don't want me behind the camera you don't.
- 1:13:02It was a guys, I'm very Mandy of myself.
- 1:13:05Hmm, okay, I can't demand from someone else, what?
- 1:13:10I demand for myself. So I was asked to be a first ad
- 1:13:17many many, many times. And I said, no, no, no.
- 1:13:20And then a good friend of mine. Samantha Burton asked me,
- 1:13:23please, please, please, please. Please, please wait.
- 1:13:26We're such a great team, please. All right.
- 1:13:29All right. You're going to hate me once
- 1:13:31we're done. No, I never hate you.
- 1:13:33You're going to hate me. What you've done.
- 1:13:35So would you have a? Yeah, so we have a crew and cast
- 1:13:38meeting and I'm like, and every knows you, and they know you've
- 1:13:42been in the business 20, but, you know, whatever.
- 1:13:44And I'm like, look, you're going to hate me when I'm done.
- 1:13:49Oh, come on. Dennis, you're such a
- 1:13:50sweetheart. You not going to like me when
- 1:13:54we're done. You're not going to like me,
- 1:13:56like me, like me doing the process.
- 1:13:58You're not going to like me, but we're going to do a kick-ass
- 1:14:01movie. Now, I'm not the most technical
- 1:14:04guy, don't ask me one lens from another, okay, but I'll call the
- 1:14:09Cadence and one. I'm actually doing able to move
- 1:14:11things along. Time is money, moving along,
- 1:14:14moving along, don't BS around a lot.
- 1:14:16I'm able to work with the actors.
- 1:14:19And now it's my strong suit with this and they appreciated this,
- 1:14:22and so the producers, I'm able to block the scenes and help the
- 1:14:27actors with their decisions and how we're doing the scenes so
- 1:14:32mad. Very tactical working with the
- 1:14:34cinematographer Angles and stuff like that.
- 1:14:37So I'm dialoguing with the actors.
- 1:14:39I'm blocking the scene with the actors, as she's doing the
- 1:14:41technical piece, it was good. It was really good.
- 1:14:45I was really happy. Of course, no one.
- 1:14:49No one has spoken to me since I'm being facetious.
- 1:14:53You know, we walked away, hug hug kiss kiss, but I told
- 1:14:58everybody go look, You're not gonna like me when I'm done.
- 1:15:02Producing is a whole different aspect because I wear my
- 1:15:07corporate hat, as a producer, let's say you write a script,
- 1:15:11right? So your eye corporate ties it.
- 1:15:15Okay, you wrote the script, it's your company.
- 1:15:18It's your vision. So you came up with the next new
- 1:15:22widget, what's a widget? It doesn't matter, but you have
- 1:15:25your vision to where you want to achieve and what you want to
- 1:15:28take your widget. Hire me as your CEO as your
- 1:15:33producer to achieve your vision. I hire the cinematographer, my
- 1:15:40VP of technology. I hire the casting director, my
- 1:15:44VP of sales. I corporatize it because I can
- 1:15:49understand it and people can understand it and that's how I
- 1:15:54do it. And I'm a proactive
- 1:15:56Communicator. I expect.
- 1:15:58I expect, I expect and that's why people like working with me
- 1:16:02from a producing perspective because even the director, I'm
- 1:16:06of Able to, you 24/7, if there's a spark of something that could
- 1:16:11go up in a big flame call me with the spark, don't call me
- 1:16:15when something's already a big Blaze because then, it's too
- 1:16:18late. And oh, by the way, you're
- 1:16:19fired, okay, call me when there's a spark, would deal with
- 1:16:23it will communicate, we'll figure it out and for some
- 1:16:28reason, I'm calm, cool and collected Collective under
- 1:16:31stress. I breathe.
- 1:16:34I talks Leo, slower and deep and I just I can figure things out.
- 1:16:39I don't get all emotional. Oh my God, The Skys Falling.
- 1:16:41I can keep it together and that you know, that's why I enjoyed
- 1:16:46producing. I just I really do.
- 1:16:49I can put together the Dream Team, I can get the job done.
- 1:16:54I expect everyone to communicate with me, you know, if there's
- 1:16:59something wrong craft Services, you know?
- 1:17:01I mean don't bother me with the Yeah, but I want to know
- 1:17:04everything that's going on. I'm not a drama queen.
- 1:17:08I don't expect drama and my stats but I expect if there's an
- 1:17:11issue that we're going to communicate and we're going to
- 1:17:14solve it right then and there every evening I do a conference
- 1:17:16call with the executive team director unit production
- 1:17:21manager. Cinematographer okay.
- 1:17:24What went right? What went wrong.
- 1:17:26What are we doing tomorrow? What do we need to change?
- 1:17:28What are we doing? So I Foster and I push
- 1:17:31communication. Thank you for sharing.
- 1:17:35I appreciate it. You're welcome.
- 1:17:37You're welcome. Speaking of Being on sets.
- 1:17:43What's the most kind of unprofessional thing you've
- 1:17:47witnessed on a set? Now, I'm sure you've seen a lot
- 1:17:51of things. Obviously, sort of mentioned
- 1:17:52earlier that you've seen some things but like just in general
- 1:17:56like what next question? Okay, no I mean you know, you
- 1:18:03know, I mean so you've got human nature, right?
- 1:18:07You've got beautiful man, beautiful women.
- 1:18:10You got long days, you know, you might, you might have different
- 1:18:14scenes, you might have a romantic scene, you might have,
- 1:18:20you know, a fight scene, you have everything across the
- 1:18:25board. I mean, think about it.
- 1:18:27You get, you get a bunch of human beings together.
- 1:18:30You put them in a stressful situation.
- 1:18:33Things happen, things happen, things happen, good things,
- 1:18:36happen, bad things happen, I was told I was told about this one
- 1:18:45movie that I wasn't on and I'm certainly not going to give you
- 1:18:48any names and stuff like that. That's fine.
- 1:18:50I don't expect the one of the principal actors was smitten
- 1:18:56with one of these x, one of the extra actors and it was it was
- 1:19:02well known. Known and to find out other
- 1:19:04people or doing other things. And look it's you do what you
- 1:19:09need to do. I home I to judge.
- 1:19:13Okay. I think I'm I think I'm known as
- 1:19:17a professional now. Does everybody love me?
- 1:19:22I would, I would hope so, I wish I would dream but reality is
- 1:19:26reality. I'm sure they're just as many
- 1:19:28people that don't like me as people that love me.
- 1:19:32But you know, you put a bunch of humans together.
- 1:19:36Everybody has their own ego in a stressful situation, what's
- 1:19:40going to happen? Well, life's going to happen.
- 1:19:42So it it is what it is. I think I like that.
- 1:19:47You like that answer. I got thing.
- 1:19:50Now I can see what I can see where you're going with it and
- 1:19:53it makes me beg another question.
- 1:19:55Actually, what's your kind of thoughts on romances occurring
- 1:20:01on set? Because it's Quite common thing.
- 1:20:03Like, for example, the Spider-Man movies are really big
- 1:20:07at the moment and I believe, every single with every single
- 1:20:14different cast, the two main actors hooked up during the
- 1:20:17process, which it like it logically makes sense.
- 1:20:19You know, spend enough time working with someone
- 1:20:23particularly intimate fashion and you're supposed to be
- 1:20:25playing an on-screen romance, you know, it's not that much of
- 1:20:28a leap to expect it to happen in real life.
- 1:20:32Always what are you asking me? What do you ask?
- 1:20:34So the question is question, the question is what are your
- 1:20:38thoughts on that? Because with the previous answer
- 1:20:40you kind of implied that you know to put it simply.
- 1:20:45It's a bad idea to get romantically involved with
- 1:20:48people and set which I would agree with.
- 1:20:50I kind of think of the same principle of any workplace,
- 1:20:54which is you know, just just don't date people.
- 1:20:58They work with like just keep it professional.
- 1:21:01Well, we have a saying in In the states and Tony Soprano.
- 1:21:05James Gandolfini said it best on one of the episodes and excuse,
- 1:21:08my French, it's really not French.
- 1:21:11But excuse my language, you don't shit where you eat Okay,
- 1:21:16you knew that was coming, you tons, you know, that was coming.
- 1:21:20So the funny thing was that was the first thing I thought in my
- 1:21:23head before I said what I said and then you just said it
- 1:21:25anyway. So my apologies to your audience
- 1:21:29that's when, you know you've got to be professional.
- 1:21:31I mean You know, is their workplace romance to mean?
- 1:21:35Yeah, we just heard about CNN, right?
- 1:21:37Jeff Zucker you know the things happen, things happen in today's
- 1:21:42in today's culture today's day and age you've got to be able to
- 1:21:47separate this from that. You know.
- 1:21:48Have I had romantic scenes have ahead.
- 1:21:51Love scenes. Yeah, you try to communicate
- 1:21:55with your fellow actor? But at the end of the day, you
- 1:21:59know, you your hug you high-five and you go home.
- 1:22:03All right, cut, we're wrapped for the day.
- 1:22:06You know, is it? Takes discipline, really?
- 1:22:11I mean, you know, did Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton
- 1:22:15hook up after a Monster's Ball? I don't know.
- 1:22:22I put that was a pretty hot steamy.
- 1:22:25Thing scenes, I suppose it depends how easily you're able
- 1:22:29to detach yourself. I mean for you you mentioned
- 1:22:33that you're a method actor. New when you have to do those
- 1:22:35scenes, are you tapping into like your real life romances?
- 1:22:39Are you thinking about that and trying to put it into that?
- 1:22:43Or are you trying to feel some sort of chemistry from this
- 1:22:46person and just make that happen?
- 1:22:47Like how do you communicate? A fake emotion.
- 1:22:52When you're drawing it from something that's real.
- 1:22:55If you saw them Zone, that's a great question.
- 1:23:07You know, I seen with this with this actress and we discussed it
- 1:23:15prior to we hunted with the director we discussed it.
- 1:23:18You know what angles are you going to take?
- 1:23:20What are you expecting to see? What do you expect to see?
- 1:23:24Okay and then you talk to the fellow actor, you know, lets you
- 1:23:29know, we're not going to This. But you know, what are you
- 1:23:32thinking? What do you see the huntress?
- 1:23:36I had kind of an intimate scene. You know, you communicate what
- 1:23:40you comfortable with? What are you comfortable with?
- 1:23:42What are we going to do? It's a closed set, you know,
- 1:23:45just different things like that. You just communicate, you know,
- 1:23:49am I going to tell you that? I'm channeling?
- 1:23:51The love of my life into this actress and I'm you know, put it
- 1:23:55is smoothing and doing no. But I'm in the moment, you know?
- 1:24:03And I am a method actor and for that moment, you know, back back
- 1:24:08with the other movie I told you about earlier.
- 1:24:12You know, I would I didn't want to date the woman that I was
- 1:24:16acting with and, you know, I mean, I guess she was kind of
- 1:24:19between things, and really thought I was into her and stuff
- 1:24:22like that. And I'm like, well, you know no,
- 1:24:24I'm an actor. Yeah, it's me and you shake my
- 1:24:27hand. I'm out.
- 1:24:29You know you know can you call me?
- 1:24:31What are you doing? I'm like going home to my
- 1:24:34girlfriend. I mean that's you know already I
- 1:24:38didn't know. Well no because I'm an actor and
- 1:24:40I'm just here working. Is it is it difficult?
- 1:24:46We'll have, you had difficulty with your partner's like when
- 1:24:49you have to do those scenes, you know, I'm sure you get this
- 1:24:52question a lot but like like how do you communicate that to
- 1:24:56someone who's not a fellow actor you know?
- 1:24:59Sure. How do you do that?
- 1:25:00Well, you you hope that your partner understands that it is
- 1:25:05acting and there are certain things that you don't do, but,
- 1:25:10you know, I've heard, you know, certain Partners will say, you
- 1:25:13will not do this, you will not do that.
- 1:25:15All right? Well, that kind of limits what
- 1:25:17you can and can't do, you know, kind of limit your roles and and
- 1:25:21stuff like that, but you've got to understand its end of the
- 1:25:24day. It's only acting, you know, did
- 1:25:27I have to kiss that person? Yeah, well I don't I'm not
- 1:25:31leaving there. You know, panning for that
- 1:25:34person was there an intimate scene.
- 1:25:37Sure, you know. It was done with a intimacy
- 1:25:42coordinator, okay? Onset, there are certain things
- 1:25:47to prevent certain things. And you know what I've done with
- 1:25:51with my partner, we read the script 10 12 times.
- 1:25:56And, you know, for this one scene, she actually helped me
- 1:26:01kind of wax. And, you know, make sure there
- 1:26:04wasn't, you know, different hair sticking out of different places
- 1:26:09that really They wouldn't look all that good on camera.
- 1:26:17I'm going to go into that. No, I appreciate that.
- 1:26:19So thank you very much but you know it you know I'm not looking
- 1:26:24to simplify it and make it minutiae because Yeah.
- 1:26:30I mean this ends and Daya is dating Tom Holland & Holland.
- 1:26:35Beautiful couple. Hmm.
- 1:26:37She's the Kick-Ass actress actress.
- 1:26:38I was just watching you for you last night and I'm a big Dune
- 1:26:42fan. So I'm excited about her him.
- 1:26:45I haven't seen this other movie yet.
- 1:26:46I did see Spider-Man. I was really excited about that.
- 1:26:49Hmm. So I'm going to probably see his
- 1:26:51other movie this week in Uncharted, I think.
- 1:26:55Yeah. So it's not right.
- 1:26:57So, I'll see that this week in. Hey.
- 1:26:59They're great kids, their kids, you know.
- 1:27:03So outside of that I mean more power to them.
- 1:27:07Yeah. I think I do think it's
- 1:27:10something you can make work. I just think it's generally
- 1:27:15speaking. It's not a good idea.
- 1:27:17Certainly. When you're making the project
- 1:27:20you're trying to make the project because okay, let's say
- 1:27:23you know you're doing a movie for like three months Chand you
- 1:27:27know you and the lead actress. Start getting into it in the
- 1:27:31first couple of weeks or the first month.
- 1:27:33I mean, you still got two months filming and oh, would you know
- 1:27:37what? It actually doesn't even matter
- 1:27:38about the filming you've still got a dual, the Press afterwards
- 1:27:43and everything. And like you don't want to like
- 1:27:46Fallout and then, you know, you have to awkwardly be there with
- 1:27:49your ex-partner promote this thing together and like you
- 1:27:52can't stand the sight of each other.
- 1:27:53Like, that's not great acting acting and being vulnerable in
- 1:27:57front of someone is intimate enough.
- 1:27:59Hmm. Then being intimate.
- 1:28:03You know, I had, I've had a bunch of Lifestyle commercials
- 1:28:07and I did talent and JC Anthony was Talan and I come to him
- 1:28:16because I'm shot and any change of wardrobe and stuff like that,
- 1:28:19and Talon JC, and I had a past relationship in this movie.
- 1:28:24So I love him. Dearly as a good friend II made
- 1:28:28him, squirm, I made him shrink in one of these scenes.
- 1:28:33Grab his hand and a poem close to me and I looked deep into his
- 1:28:36eyes and I forget exactly what I say.
- 1:28:39But I'm looking at this guy is looking up at me.
- 1:28:41He's like, he's, he's squirming and like I got you, you know, I
- 1:28:47got you and it's just acting isn't man enough.
- 1:28:54To worry about any other level of intimacy.
- 1:28:57Now, I just speak for me. You might have somebody on next
- 1:29:01week's like oh yeah. Hey more power, T, it's an
- 1:29:05individual thing. I'd rather have that
- 1:29:09relationship that friendship then.
- 1:29:13Screw it all up. That makes sense.
- 1:29:17No I agree and I think it speaks to what you were saying earlier
- 1:29:20about Connections in the importance of.
- 1:29:21Yeah I think it's just Really good to keep people's
- 1:29:25connections. Have good working relationships,
- 1:29:28obviously, as you said before, you know, small world and the
- 1:29:31acting world. So, you might end up acting with
- 1:29:33these people in a movie way down the line, you know, the get
- 1:29:36this. Yeah, it stands to reason to
- 1:29:39maintain good relations in that regard.
- 1:29:41Keep it? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:42And you know, as I said earlier to one project, begats another
- 1:29:46project so you don't know, you don't want someone out there.
- 1:29:51Talking and thinking, negatively of you, there's enough of that
- 1:29:55out there as it is. You don't want someone in your
- 1:29:57industry, I get calls all the time.
- 1:30:01Hey, Dennis, you worked with John Smith.
- 1:30:03You worked with Joan Smith, you know, I can you give us a
- 1:30:06recommendation. Oh, okay, yeah, and you know,
- 1:30:09like, like I'll get a text message for our server or a DM
- 1:30:12and unlike call me because I'm like going to put something in
- 1:30:15writing, it's call me. So they'll call me up.
- 1:30:18And first question, I ask is why Well, we've seen you work for
- 1:30:23them. I've seen your credits and you
- 1:30:25know, I really respect you. We work together, love your work
- 1:30:27etc, etc. Can you tell me about working
- 1:30:30with John Smith? Oh man, I love John Great
- 1:30:35Communicator, very creative, always brought energy, always
- 1:30:39prepared, edify edify edify. Well, what do you think about
- 1:30:44Johnny Jones? I never work with him again.
- 1:30:49Well, can you elaborate on that? No, I'm not going to elaborate
- 1:30:52on that. Hmm.
- 1:30:57And that again is from my corporate days.
- 1:31:01Yeah. Because from a corporate
- 1:31:03perspective, if I, you know, you call me up.
- 1:31:06Yeah. That Christian Reeve guy.
- 1:31:07What a piece of oh my God you know he made me.
- 1:31:10Wait how long in the fucking zoomed?
- 1:31:14That's a lot of straight news. I don't do it, is fake news and
- 1:31:26again back in the corporate days, you couldn't, if you gave
- 1:31:30someone a bad review, that could be used against you.
- 1:31:33So I'd rather just say, hey, I love Christian, I want to be on
- 1:31:37a show, again, he's a great guy, very accommodating, the
- 1:31:41questions were great. He kept me, it was just a Energy
- 1:31:45stuff like that. Alright, this one podcast and
- 1:31:48the guy asked me questions. I told you earlier.
- 1:31:50I'm like, yeah, we're done. Yeah, next question.
- 1:31:54We're done. So, yeah, I think it's not just
- 1:31:59with acting any kind of business.
- 1:32:01It's always important to To not speak negatively of people or
- 1:32:09companies or Etc. And I think this is a lesson.
- 1:32:13I had to learn. We all.
- 1:32:15Did we all put her foot in her mouth?
- 1:32:17Yeah, but I just think it's like one of those things that you
- 1:32:20like, I've had bad experiences, certain companies for example,
- 1:32:24but they also gave me a lot as well.
- 1:32:27And I never meet. I never named them.
- 1:32:30Because, I mean, yeah, I'm looking to get sued, that's
- 1:32:33number one number two, because it wasn't all bad either.
- 1:32:37Yeah. But I think it just makes you
- 1:32:39look bad and unprofessional. If you're seen saying negative
- 1:32:44things about people or whatever. And I think what you said is a
- 1:32:47good response, like if you're absolutely pressed for to give a
- 1:32:51response, you say what you said, like I will not work with this
- 1:32:54person again and we will leave it at that and and that because
- 1:32:58you don't have to that's the thing.
- 1:32:59You don't have to. There's no there's nothing
- 1:33:01forcing you to have to say something that's purely a
- 1:33:04decision and I'm not going to put myself in a libel position,
- 1:33:08you know, if you know me or at least see my work you know I
- 1:33:11love to work and for me to say I'll never work with that person
- 1:33:15again hmm that should speak volumes and look do people say
- 1:33:19that about me? I'm sure there's got to be
- 1:33:22somebody out there, but that's okay.
- 1:33:24I think I'm, I think I'm pretty decent what I do.
- 1:33:28I think I'm pretty Select it, what I do.
- 1:33:30And I, you know, I think I'm pretty humble with.
- 1:33:33What I do. Do, we have an ego?
- 1:33:35We all have an eagle but Christian I'm working, you know,
- 1:33:38I think that's really something that tells me something with
- 1:33:42with reputation and what people say about you.
- 1:33:45I mean, yeah, I mean you could be Mother Teresa and people
- 1:33:47still badmouth you so it doesn't matter what you do.
- 1:33:50That's number one, number two, I mean, I upgraded allergy that's
- 1:33:55funny. It's true though, that's funny.
- 1:33:56Yeah. But I think the majority of the
- 1:33:58majority of people are Saying good things about you or neutral
- 1:34:01things, then you'll probably. All right, you know, I mean,
- 1:34:03you're always going to have a few people that are going to say
- 1:34:05bad, sure. You know, I was in a sinner
- 1:34:08right up in the LA Times, a review for the Mad Hatter is I
- 1:34:13this is about three years ago now and he'll Lena Hutchins was
- 1:34:16our cinematographer rest in peace, right?
- 1:34:20So now that what a tragedy but I'm heading to the gym and the
- 1:34:26review got attached to our IMDb. And now In the Masthead.
- 1:34:33And so I could get to the gym and I really am laughing.
- 1:34:35I'm laughing. Like, come here, you know, you
- 1:34:37got your buddies. Unlike I just got, I got written
- 1:34:39up in the LA Times. Like that's awesome.
- 1:34:41Was it's a well? It says, I suck you suck.
- 1:34:44They suck the movie sucks. Suck.
- 1:34:46Suck suck, suck, suck. And I'm laughing at like, what's
- 1:34:49so funny? I go, I never sucked so bad.
- 1:34:52Well, that's not good. I go.
- 1:34:54No, it's great. My name is in the LA Times.
- 1:34:56Yeah, awesome. I could suck all night long.
- 1:35:00My name is in the LA Times and they're like, Okay.
- 1:35:05It's like not understanding why I'm so excited, you know,
- 1:35:10because if the critics say you suck, it means you're going to
- 1:35:14get a Rotten Tomato High tomato number right and you're gonna
- 1:35:18have a cult following. So you just you just never know.
- 1:35:22It's just any publicity is good publicity.
- 1:35:24Yeah. People are talking about you,
- 1:35:26your living rent-free in their heads and you're getting, you
- 1:35:29get booked. That's the thing.
- 1:35:30That's the bizarre thing about it.
- 1:35:32I mean, just look at At that guy, those two guys that did the
- 1:35:35room. I mean like that, what car?
- 1:35:37Yeah. And it's brilliant.
- 1:35:40It's got cult status. As you said, I can.
- 1:35:42It's I mean that they've made so much money out of that and they
- 1:35:45continue to brilliant. You know, it's all about your
- 1:35:49attitude and Just everything with you know.
- 1:35:53Yeah. And you can't sit back, you
- 1:35:55know, advice for new actors. It look, you know, there's a lot
- 1:36:00of this, there's a lot of talk, right?
- 1:36:02Christian. Hey, I want you on my hundred
- 1:36:04million dollar project and we're going to start, we're going to
- 1:36:07do it in in Moldavia by the end of this year.
- 1:36:12All right? So you might be sitting back and
- 1:36:14saying Ching, Hai. I got the lead and what happens?
- 1:36:20October comes. Yes, where's the letter of
- 1:36:22intent? Where's the script?
- 1:36:23December comes. Oh yeah, we're going to put it
- 1:36:26off. You got to keep yourself the
- 1:36:29best thing you can do for any production that you're in any
- 1:36:33pre-production. Any few for future production is
- 1:36:35keep yourself busy. Why?
- 1:36:38As you're building your brand we discussed earlier your brand is
- 1:36:42worth that much more. Okay, unlawful duties, 2 million
- 1:36:46views. I'm not sitting around in my, on
- 1:36:48my hands, I'm out there working, so my value right to my brand
- 1:36:56and to that production goes up exponentially where a lot of
- 1:36:59people are going to our sit back and just wait.
- 1:37:02Now this game a hustle, it's a game of hustle.
- 1:37:07One thing that fascinates me about this industry as well,
- 1:37:09like obviously coming at it from a New Comers perspective but
- 1:37:12also just Looking in at, for example, you know, if you
- 1:37:16release it, if you record a movie, it will be released the
- 1:37:18following year. That's pretty common, you know,
- 1:37:20because he thinks. Yeah, maybe.
- 1:37:22But generally speaking, that's how long it takes.
- 1:37:28But, but like, for example, I'm the same as you, I'm constantly,
- 1:37:32hustling doing things like appearing on other people's
- 1:37:34shows. Do my own podcast appearing in
- 1:37:37enacting things. Sometimes I forget about stuff
- 1:37:40I've done because it's been so long since Yeah it comes out but
- 1:37:44that's the thing. It's like the actor's life is
- 1:37:47you're constantly and in that it's like what's next?
- 1:37:50Like okay cut we're done on to the next thing.
- 1:37:53You're only as good. You're only as good as what's
- 1:37:56next. It's all about the next.
- 1:37:58It's all about the next, okay? You gotta paint on this, you
- 1:38:02know, you're going to do the red carpet in a year, two years.
- 1:38:06What's next? You know, and that's what it
- 1:38:08comes down to what what is, what is next and that's and And
- 1:38:13you're right. So I mean if you look at kind of
- 1:38:17stuff that I'm booking and what I'm doing and what I'm looking
- 1:38:19at, I'm going to show you is looking at the future, you know?
- 1:38:22Okay. Are we booked out for this
- 1:38:24quarter? Are we booked out for next
- 1:38:26quarter? What are we doing?
- 1:38:28And that's what it comes down to and that's the important stuff
- 1:38:32because you're only as important as the next you could do
- 1:38:35something and not do something again for years.
- 1:38:38But what's your value to that project?
- 1:38:41Where your value is nothing because you make You may be a
- 1:38:43one-hit wonder. You know what do you got going
- 1:38:48on? You know, if you look at my
- 1:38:50IMDb, I've got a ton of stuff in pre-production.
- 1:38:53Okay. You know, I've got, I might have
- 1:38:56a letter of intent here and there.
- 1:38:59But when is it going to book one?
- 1:39:00Is it going to do? I tell Rebecca and I kind of
- 1:39:03strategize and we talked every day about.
- 1:39:06Well when is this project going to come up?
- 1:39:08Well you know there's no date to it.
- 1:39:10All right well we're not going to sit around and let it occupy
- 1:39:13space in my mind. Yeah.
- 1:39:15Well It on the shelf and we'll go to what's on the docket you
- 1:39:20know because because think about it.
- 1:39:22If I've got something coming up next month.
- 1:39:26Am I going to work on that script?
- 1:39:27Now it's signed we've got the contract with good to go.
- 1:39:32Or am I going to read something that doesn't even have a date to
- 1:39:35it? We don't even have a letter of
- 1:39:37intent. You know what?
- 1:39:39Little bit. I got left.
- 1:39:41I gotta occupy which stuff that I'm doing now.
- 1:39:46Does that make sense? I mean, I'm very I try to be
- 1:39:49very pragmatic, you know, if I'm auditioning for something of
- 1:39:52course, from all over, if I'm doing a table read, of course,
- 1:39:54I'm all over it. If there's no date, put to it.
- 1:39:59I'm not going to memorize your script.
- 1:40:02Yeah, why would you ask me to? That's not fair.
- 1:40:06When I may have another project coming up.
- 1:40:09I have a board, I'm very And I've all my projects written
- 1:40:13down and stuff like that going on.
- 1:40:15So I'm not going to memorize your script when there's no
- 1:40:23contract is no dates. There's nothing going on.
- 1:40:26That's just not fair to even ask.
- 1:40:28Now, I don't speak for everyone. Of course, I just speak for me
- 1:40:32and my limitations. I've got to worry about the
- 1:40:36business at hand. Hmm.
- 1:40:38And and that's that's what I need to focus on.
- 1:40:41You know, does that make sense at all?
- 1:40:43Yeah, yeah, no, no. I think the same way, you know,
- 1:40:47I've had auditions and stuff that I've been talking about
- 1:40:52directors with recently and, you know, they'll put some dates my
- 1:40:56way and I look and see if it's available, but I don't put it in
- 1:41:00my calendar until I agree, but we've agreed that are they,
- 1:41:03here's the role and I'm like, yeah.
- 1:41:04Except that's when I put it in and now that's that's happening.
- 1:41:08Yeah, but until we get the contract, you get the contract,
- 1:41:11you get it half up front that now you know, it's legit.
- 1:41:14So I decided that you don't know if it's legit or not.
- 1:41:17So why would I you know why would I you know, put why would
- 1:41:23I waste my time? You know, if you're building a
- 1:41:27house, right? You contract me to build a
- 1:41:29house. You gave me no money upfront.
- 1:41:33You gave me. No, blueprints, you give me no
- 1:41:35day and I start digging a ditch for the foundation.
- 1:41:39Well, what am I doing? You got to be very practical at
- 1:41:44this stuff because that I mean and again you might get 10
- 1:41:48different actors with 10 different opinions but that's
- 1:41:50just I know my strengths and know my weaknesses which my
- 1:41:54weaknesses are many and I just have to act accordingly.
- 1:42:00What's been the most memorable experience of your acting
- 1:42:03career? So far, sure.
- 1:42:05You know, it's like asking asking Tom, Brady, you know, a
- 1:42:10true football or not a soccer player footballer, just what his
- 1:42:14best Super Bowl was, you know, Christian every, every time
- 1:42:18you're on set. It's so memorable.
- 1:42:20Every time you're on set, and you have so many good
- 1:42:25experiences, every set is memorable.
- 1:42:28There isn't one. And that really sticks out.
- 1:42:31It's just every time you're on set, I have such a great time
- 1:42:35and really enjoy everything that I've been a part of sure a
- 1:42:39feature, a commercial producing acting every aspect of it.
- 1:42:44I just enjoy it and everything. Everything is memorable.
- 1:42:47Everything's member while I try to keep them momento from every
- 1:42:51little thing that I've been in either assigned script either
- 1:42:55cover page signed by The Ensemble or, you know, a little
- 1:42:59A little badge. I'm looking, I got masks from
- 1:43:02different things, you know it all means a lot and everything
- 1:43:05has been a very unique, very humbling, very great experience.
- 1:43:10Some reason, thanks for sharing my pleasure.
- 1:43:14This is my favorite question to ask.
- 1:43:16I can't wait to ask you. What's the biggest life lesson
- 1:43:20you've learned so far? In my life or inactive in your
- 1:43:26life. You have another eight hours to
- 1:43:31go and I'll go time, baby. I'm glad you do.
- 1:43:35I don't, I don't, you know, live every day like it's your last
- 1:43:43Wow, gonna get for Klimt. you know you can't you can't let too
- 1:43:49much time, you can't waste too much time you can't let too many
- 1:43:53days slip by You don't you can't you got to live each day.
- 1:44:00You got to push the ball forward each day.
- 1:44:02You've got to have cherish that relationships.
- 1:44:05You have do the best you can and try to try to make a positive
- 1:44:12impact in everybody. You Come and touch with, you
- 1:44:16know, sorry, no, I don't apologize.
- 1:44:20You just have to Life's too short.
- 1:44:23And again, I don't consider myself an enlightened being by
- 1:44:25any means. I just know, I'm here for a
- 1:44:27short period of time, And a lot of people can't see the forest
- 1:44:31through the trees, a lot of people can't.
- 1:44:35So You know, from a personal perspective which I don't get, I
- 1:44:41don't get personal. You've got to understand what
- 1:44:46you doing today. Has generational implications
- 1:44:51Generational implications. And if you can't understand that
- 1:44:58you need to whether you have children, whether you're
- 1:45:02married, regardless of where you are, everything you do has
- 1:45:08generational consequences. and before you make a move, before
- 1:45:15you open your mouth because the tongue is mightier than the
- 1:45:19sword, you've got to think that through and you really have to
- 1:45:25be an adult and think about what you're going to say when you're
- 1:45:29going to say it, you know, we all say horrible things, when we
- 1:45:33argue Unfortunately, you know, and I've been cut down a lot by
- 1:45:41people's words, and I've never blessed with many things, but
- 1:45:45never are sharp talk. And, you know, you just have to,
- 1:45:50you have to understand that. And with what you doing today,
- 1:45:55how does it impact tomorrow, you know, from either a either, a
- 1:46:00family Dynamic, a personal Dynamic, professional dynamic.
- 1:46:08How is what you're doing today, you know, whether you're you may
- 1:46:15be trying to create an example. Whether you're trying you,
- 1:46:22whether you're bad-mouthing, your ex-spouse, whatever that
- 1:46:26might be. You know, what are you doing?
- 1:46:30You know, my father was very Very loving.
- 1:46:36Never had a bad word for anyone. Never had it backwards for a
- 1:46:41always sent out birthday card. So he said money in the people
- 1:46:44always, always had a good call, don't mess with them, don't mess
- 1:46:50with them. But you know, I I learned early
- 1:46:55on and I'm very and I learned if I, if I send you a birthday
- 1:47:00card, And now to get one in return, I'm not sending you
- 1:47:04another one. if I send you a Christmas card, Because what
- 1:47:10does it take to send and send out a card?
- 1:47:12But to card, let's say cards, five bucks with stamp, another
- 1:47:15two bucks. But outside of the intrinsic
- 1:47:19cost. What value is that buying you?
- 1:47:24What values that bind you saying?
- 1:47:26Sending out a thank you card going on Facebook and saying hey
- 1:47:29man thank you so much. Chris did I love the time?
- 1:47:32We had together. Thank you so much.
- 1:47:34You're a rockstar. I look forward to working with
- 1:47:36you again. What does that buy?
- 1:47:39It buys you What's the word I'm looking for?
- 1:47:44It's just it just penetrates here and stays in here and
- 1:47:48penetrates here. You have no.
- 1:47:52That's it. Forgiveness.
- 1:47:56Isn't for the person you're forgiving.
- 1:47:58It's for you and a quicker you can forgive and move on the
- 1:48:04better off. You're going to be.
- 1:48:06That doesn't mean the person that has wronged you or has
- 1:48:11perceived that they've been wronged is going to let it go.
- 1:48:17The toughest thing in this life is O'er the most.
- 1:48:21Damning thing in this life is holding hatred.
- 1:48:28Towards someone like giving a give you a thousand foot view,
- 1:48:32I'll give you 1,000, for example, because I know the
- 1:48:35persons not going to watch this and person doesn't follow me.
- 1:48:39People, I know got divorced and they haven't seen each other for
- 1:48:44years, but person pulls up in his utility truck.
- 1:48:50And happens to see you and comes out of his of the utility truck
- 1:48:56and false to their knees and starts apologizing profusely.
- 1:49:02Now, 10 years after the offense has been done, so this person's
- 1:49:06been carrying water. Tried sadness fear, you've
- 1:49:13occupied a place in this person's mind for quite some
- 1:49:16time. And that a person happens to see
- 1:49:19you in a person is pouring, their heart out apologizing.
- 1:49:23Well, you can do one at you. Things of that moment, you can
- 1:49:26basically keep jamming that person and and say something
- 1:49:33that would continue That person or you can be forgiving.
- 1:49:39It's 10 years and who is forgiveness for?
- 1:49:44It's not for the person that drop to their knees and is
- 1:49:46apologizing, forgiveness is for the person giving it.
- 1:49:51So if someone is carrying water and carrying the weight of that
- 1:49:55guilt for 10 years, that's a long time. 24 hours is a long
- 1:50:00time, okay? And for you not to give that
- 1:50:04forgiveness and trusting, it talks more of the person.
- 1:50:12It takes a lot for someone to admit they're wrong and to
- 1:50:14forgive to begin with. But you receiving the apology
- 1:50:20after such a prolonged period of time and you not acknowledging
- 1:50:25it or absolving the person of that guilt in that incident,
- 1:50:34speak speaks volumes of you doesn't speak volumes of the
- 1:50:38person, apologizing speaks volumes of you.
- 1:50:41It really does. So I try not to hold on to
- 1:50:48guilt. Trying to hold on to hatred.
- 1:50:51I try not to use the word hate. I try not to use the capital
- 1:50:55where th I can f whore people, maybe hor, I can't hate people
- 1:51:02but yeah, I mean stuff happens where you need to decide what
- 1:51:07you're going to do. My inner circle is really small,
- 1:51:12it's all look, maybe two fingers on one hand, That's okay.
- 1:51:17That's okay, there's security, and that there's a sense of
- 1:51:23safety and that And there's a sense of doing what you do.
- 1:51:28Joaquin. Phoenix was interviewed by
- 1:51:30Anderson. Cooper, I guess, two years ago
- 1:51:33now, or last year when he won the Oscar, two years of belief
- 1:51:37and they're walking in the Hollywood Hills and Anderson
- 1:51:40psyche. So what do you do at night?
- 1:51:41He's like, oh, I hang out with my friends and and he goes wait,
- 1:51:44do we really have to do this? Do I really have to answer that
- 1:51:47question? You know, do you really need to
- 1:51:49go? You know I wake up at 6 a.m.
- 1:51:52like you don't meal. You really need to know that
- 1:51:54stuff you really So it's not that you want to be an enigma,
- 1:51:58you know, you work so hard to get popular and to get noticed
- 1:52:01and then you want to go back in your bubble.
- 1:52:04You know, the Persona that you might put out now, I love
- 1:52:08people. I think I'm very personable, but
- 1:52:10I'm also very proud, you know, I know a lot of people have a lot
- 1:52:14of acquaintances. It's rare that I have.
- 1:52:18Good friends. Hmm.
- 1:52:20And that's, you know, I'm the oldest of three and it's just It
- 1:52:27is what it is. I read something this morning
- 1:52:30that if somebody says it is what it is.
- 1:52:33Be aware that person because they're dangerous.
- 1:52:37It is what it is. I said I quite often so I guess
- 1:52:40I'm really dangerous. I mean look at look at Tom
- 1:52:43Hardy. Yeah Tom Hardy I heard he's up
- 1:52:46for James Bond. I heard Aegis albums up for
- 1:52:49James. Find out be phenomenal.
- 1:52:51People say James Hardy is a Tom Hardy.
- 1:52:53Excuse me, it's tough to work with never worked with them, I
- 1:52:56want to work with them, you read things, he's a loner, Yuri
- 1:53:01things can of Reeves is a loner, okay, who cares?
- 1:53:04Hmm. Who cares?
- 1:53:05They're not going to be on TMZ. You know, getting their groove
- 1:53:09on the club cares. They're human beings just like,
- 1:53:13just like you and I it's what you decide to do and how you
- 1:53:16decide to live your life, you know, Canna Reeves the generous
- 1:53:21man. You know what a, what a great
- 1:53:24guy would a generous man? You know, Tom Hardy.
- 1:53:27I'm sure you know it, sir. Tom Hardy got knighted or
- 1:53:30something, right? I think.
- 1:53:32Yeah, I think you got night at her home on you.
- 1:53:35You should know that. I know that better than you.
- 1:53:38Come on. I don't know why.
- 1:53:40We don't know people over here. Sorry I got the so I got deep
- 1:53:47with that. No, no, thank you so much.
- 1:53:49I mean, it's it's it's one of the reasons why Always ask these
- 1:53:53questions. Yeah, because I think that every
- 1:53:55human being has something to share something to offer and
- 1:54:02what you said about forgiveness as well, I really resonate with
- 1:54:05that, okay? You just gotta let it go.
- 1:54:10You gotta let it drift away because it just sits on you like
- 1:54:13a heavyweight, like, a dark cloud or something.
- 1:54:15It's either as you said than done.
- 1:54:18It's easier said that done. You literally have to look in
- 1:54:21the mirror and be retrospective and you have to have her certain
- 1:54:26meditation. Like, it's like, we're not,
- 1:54:28we're not perfect though. We never will be perfect.
- 1:54:30No, we won't. You know, like what you were
- 1:54:33saying before about. The person not accepting the
- 1:54:38apology. Like I think that that's The
- 1:54:43absolute worst thing. I mean obviously it depends on
- 1:54:45the person's done. Some things could be completely
- 1:54:48unforgivable us but pens, but in general, yeah.
- 1:54:52It's I think is a noble thing to accept apologies and to allow
- 1:55:00that person to move on and keep growing because you know that's
- 1:55:06what we're trying to do at the end of the day you know life is
- 1:55:10too short. Life is too short.
- 1:55:13I was eight blocks away from World Trade Center.
- 1:55:15It should have been two blocks away.
- 1:55:17Oh my Mercedes, four years ago, five years ago, caught on fire.
- 1:55:23So useless 10 seconds. It was fully What else happened?
- 1:55:29I was on a plane with Benjamin. Netanyahu coming home from San
- 1:55:32Diego or LAX. Excuse me.
- 1:55:35And I was on a plane with a an engine in Iraq.
- 1:55:39He engineer that was espousing hatred towards Israel.
- 1:55:44I'm In First Class Benjamin Netanyahu.
- 1:55:47We obviously know that name me and never a key engineer.
- 1:55:51All right, if we're going down in flames, this is it.
- 1:55:55So this Cats got a bunch of lives left obviously, and I'm
- 1:55:58here to make a difference. It's just it's just funny.
- 1:56:04It's just funny, you know, it, you need to be able to laugh.
- 1:56:09You need to be able to do what you do.
- 1:56:11I read my mission statement goals every morning, you know, I
- 1:56:14did before the show. And if I can make an impact, you
- 1:56:18know, through my art, you know, through my finances, through
- 1:56:22whatever it takes, life is good. Life is good.
- 1:56:25I've got two children if I can do something to build a legacy
- 1:56:31for them. You know, and they don't
- 1:56:34appreciate it. Now I do hope I can build
- 1:56:37something. I can leave it to them, leave it
- 1:56:39to the, to my grandkids and and make an impact, you know, dr.
- 1:56:43Stephen Covey, you know, to live to live to love to learn to
- 1:56:48leave a legacy. Amazing.
- 1:56:52As we draw things to a close for today.
- 1:56:54Do you have any upcoming projects or some final thoughts
- 1:56:57that you'd like to lay leave with our lessons?
- 1:56:58With? I've got a bunch of things going
- 1:57:01on. I mean, the Nostradamus Mission,
- 1:57:04it's a, it's a book written by Daniel Bergdorf, which is right
- 1:57:08now he's in Bucharest. So scary.
- 1:57:12And we're going to shoot in Rome this year, but with everything
- 1:57:15going on, you know, you guys in Europe, can't get your shit
- 1:57:18together. So we got to go, we got to stay
- 1:57:20in the states and I wish you'd figure stuff out, life could be
- 1:57:24easy, but we're going to shoot. We're going to shoot later this
- 1:57:27year and I'm in the mm in the Italians.
- 1:57:31Xacti Epi producer writer director.
- 1:57:34I've got a lead role in that and we're going to, we're probably
- 1:57:36going to start, I guess towards the end of the year.
- 1:57:39There's Just, you know, we've got a bunch of big projects that
- 1:57:43are secured. That'll lock down and like with
- 1:57:47the audition yesterday I've got stuff coming up.
- 1:57:50So there's just there's a lot going on and it's just really an
- 1:57:54exciting place to be and I got to take Christian, right?
- 1:57:56I know, you know, you're over the pond and I'm over here in
- 1:57:59the colonies if I can help anybody with anything, anything
