- 0:00Hello and welcome to Scripture Central and happy Happy Easter
- 0:03Time to you. We're so excited to be able to
- 0:06share with you some thoughts from the Scripture Central team.
- 0:10We are so happy to be here and hope you have a wonderful Easter
- 0:14week, especially as we can appreciate better what the Book
- 0:19of Mormon tells us about what happened really at Easter time.
- 0:24I I just have to tell you for a minute a conversation that
- 0:27happened a little while ago. I said, Jack, I want to talk
- 0:31about Easter not just from third Nephi, but how everything about
- 0:37the whole week of Easter from the Last Supper and everything
- 0:41working up to the death and resurrection in the tomb, are
- 0:44any of these prophecies in the Book of Mormon.
- 0:46And Jack said, Oh yes. And he listed off scripture and
- 0:50verse on at least eight different points and I was blown
- 0:54away. It's powerful.
- 0:55I've been. I've been blown away during this
- 0:57study. It's been a great week and I
- 0:59hope it motivates you to jump into your scriptures and study
- 1:03the same. And it's it's not just that it
- 1:06talks a lot about it, but it adds insight.
- 1:09I think if people had had the text that we have from the brass
- 1:13plates and from Nephi and Alma, they would not have had such a
- 1:17confusion as to Christ's purpose and his mission.
- 1:22And we hope that as people study this week and live through the
- 1:28the the Easter week, they'll include the Book of Mormon more
- 1:31extensively than we usually do. But you were the one that said
- 1:35that's what we should do today. And you know, if you don't have
- 1:39the right question, you're not going to get the right answer.
- 1:42So let's say let's see what we can do with this.
- 1:49And usually when we start with Easter, we start with the
- 1:52wonderful triumphal entry. And as they come in for that
- 1:55last week of the Lord's life, I couldn't find anything on the
- 1:59triumphal entry in the Book of Mormon.
- 2:01I don't think there's anything direct, although it's certainly
- 2:04prophesized, doesn't it, that Jesus will come to his people?
- 2:07Yes. And this has to be a public
- 2:10coming. But the but the triumphal entry
- 2:12is a time where they're they're recognizing Jesus as the
- 2:16Messiah, and so they're calling him King of David and Hosea.
- 2:21They're they're using names for him.
- 2:23That's right. This is a royal recognition that
- 2:27as he comes into Jerusalem, he's doing what the kings used to do
- 2:32as they approached the holy city.
- 2:35And as each of the four Gospels describe this, they have a
- 2:37little bit of differences, but there's a lot of continuity that
- 2:40he is the king, He is the promised Messiah.
- 2:44That goes way back to in the gospel approach in the New
- 2:47Testament to Jesus's genealogy. He's a royal leader.
- 2:51He comes with that blessing, among many others.
- 2:54But the one thing that the Book of Mormon does add is a whole
- 2:59list, a complete range of terms, names for Jesus.
- 3:06And there are some of them that are quite unique, and many of
- 3:10them deal with Jesus's kingship. So as you go through and just
- 3:15think about all the different ways that the people and the
- 3:19prophets address the Lord. And so when you look at these
- 3:23names, I King Benjamin calls Jesus the heavenly king
- 3:30recognizing his royal role problem that has been created
- 3:34and the Lord God omnipotent. And it's interesting to me that
- 3:39Benjamin is himself a king. And so King Benjamin uses
- 3:44terminology for Jesus that ties in with Jesus's royal functions
- 3:51and his power. Of course Jacob and Alma will
- 3:55echo this, but will now call Jesus the King of Heaven, which
- 4:01is not just the King of Jerusalem or King of the Jews,
- 4:04which is what will be put on the cross, but the King of Heaven.
- 4:08One other is Samuel the Lamanite calls Jesus the great and
- 4:13eternal head. Now that means the head of State
- 4:17or the head of the people. And Nephi himself also liked
- 4:23using the phrase the Mighty One of Israel.
- 4:27And that's a royal term. So that reassures us that Jesus
- 4:32is powerful. He has, of course, spiritual
- 4:35power. He has teaching power.
- 4:38He has priesthood power. But he's also the King, our Lord
- 4:42and master. I love this idea of looking at
- 4:47our names for the Lord in an Easter context, because then our
- 4:51prayers, our worship, our hymn singing all can become triumphal
- 4:56entry types where we are welcoming the Lord into our
- 4:59lives. We want to worship Him for us,
- 5:02so it's not just that one day in Jerusalem.
- 5:06That's a wonderful statement. The Book of Mormon is doing it.
- 5:09Yeah, we'd all like to be there at that gate, welcoming him and
- 5:13we can. And we can.
- 5:14We can lay down our baggage before him and our sins and
- 5:20allow him to cleanse us. Yeah, OK, so we have the
- 5:28triumphant entry, and then we've got four or five days, or three
- 5:32or four days, depending on how you're which gospel you're
- 5:34counting of the Lord teaching and performing things.
- 5:38He does a couple of miracles with the fig tree.
- 5:40And prophesying about the destruction of Jerusalem.
- 5:43Yes, the Book of Mormon has a lot of prophecies about the
- 5:47Second Coming as well as the First Coming.
- 5:49But do you find anything that fits into that week in your
- 5:53study of the Book of Mormon, the week of Easter, or those few
- 5:56days between the triumphal? Entry Last Supper.
- 5:59And the between the triumphal entry and the Last Supper, Yes,
- 6:01that's exactly what. I mean, Jesus spends a lot of
- 6:03time at the temple and right after the triumphal entry, he
- 6:08makes a beeline straight to the temple.
- 6:11And that's, I think, important because he knows that's the
- 6:14place where you have those who, because of priest crafts and
- 6:18because of political situations, people are especially concerned
- 6:22about his popularity, having raised Lazarus from the dead.
- 6:26That's why in John chapter 12 such a big crowd comes to
- 6:30welcome Jesus. They've heard and they want to
- 6:32see the one who raised Lazarus. And the priests and the members
- 6:38of the Sanhedrin are not real happy with this.
- 6:42And we know that right after the raising of Lazarus they have
- 6:45already decided that it is better that one man should die,
- 6:49meaning Jesus. Then we lose all of our place
- 6:53here in the temple. But Jesus?
- 6:55He doesn't shy away from that. He goes right to the temple.
- 7:01Even though they're probably going to accuse him.
- 7:03Well, they do when they come up, and they ask him.
- 7:06So by what authority are you doing these miracles?
- 7:09Now, there are two options here. Either you're doing it by the
- 7:13power of God, or you're doing it by the power of the devil.
- 7:16And but they want to know what is your source of power.
- 7:21And you remember what Jesus says.
- 7:24Well, tell me where John the Baptist got his authority.
- 7:26And they say we can't, we can't, we don't know.
- 7:29And then he says, well then I can't.
- 7:30Tell you. Oh, of course they do.
- 7:32Of course they do. But they say we can't tell.
- 7:35We're not going to. Answer then, he says.
- 7:36Then I'm not going to answer you.
- 7:38Exactly. And that's when he tells the
- 7:40parable of the two sons how one son was asked by the father to
- 7:46go down, and he has to think about it for a little while.
- 7:50Meanwhile, the second son is asked, will you go down?
- 7:53And the second son says, you bet it's all about me.
- 7:55I'll be glad to go down. I'll do this.
- 7:58In English it doesn't sound like he's being proudful, but in the
- 8:01Greek it says eagle. Yeah, that's right.
- 8:04I do it my way. That's right.
- 8:07My will not thine will. And so Jesus gives them that
- 8:12little parable and asks so which of them did the will of the
- 8:16Father. And of course it was a a self
- 8:19reference to the first Son. So he's making a a very strong
- 8:23statement about who he is. Do we get that in the Book of
- 8:28Mormon? Absolutely the same kind of
- 8:31understanding. Jesus knows who he is, and he
- 8:34discloses who he is, and the Father acknowledges Jesus and
- 8:39recognizes him. And the Book of Mormon texts are
- 8:43filled with wonderful statements that are not the same as, but
- 8:48certainly consistent with what we have in that entry into the
- 8:52temple. With all the priests there at
- 8:55the Temple and the Sadducees and the Pharisees and their lawyers
- 8:59and the scribes who are attacking him, they're trying to
- 9:01get evidence to put him on trial.
- 9:03That's right. And they want to crucify him.
- 9:06So they need to have something legal that the Romans will
- 9:09acknowledge, not just the Judaic law.
- 9:13And Jesus is very careful in those days in the temple.
- 9:18There there are three days where he spends much of the time in
- 9:21the temple he does teach. He gives some parables,
- 9:24including the 10 virgins, the wise 5 and the foolish 5 he
- 9:31which is talking about the coming of the bridegroom.
- 9:34And he teaches with the widow's might.
- 9:35There's a lot of stories that fall into that period.
- 9:38And finally the the teaching of the the parable of the talents.
- 9:44And different people will be given different talents, and
- 9:47some will go and bury them, but others will magnify them.
- 9:51So it's talking about the final judgement.
- 9:53What we get in 3rd Nephi is what Jesus probably would have liked
- 9:58to have said to a faithful group that received him in the temple
- 10:03if they would have recognized him and said Master teach us
- 10:07what might he have said? Because where does Jesus appear
- 10:11when he comes in 3rd Nephi as a resurrected Lord?
- 10:15At the temple in Bountiful to those who had been prepared and
- 10:20were gathered. So just as we have in Easter a
- 10:25focus on the temple, we also have in the Book of Mormon lots
- 10:31of further information about the temple.
- 10:39So the Easter Week continues on in the New Testament with the
- 10:43most information in John on the Last Supper.
- 10:47And we have his beautiful sermon.
- 10:49We have the ordinance of the Washington feet.
- 10:52But I want to talk about the sacrament because I was
- 10:55surprised to find years ago that only Matthew, Mark and Luke
- 10:59include the sacrament, not John. Even though John has so much
- 11:04beautiful doctrine in his sermon, he does not include the
- 11:07sacrament there. I think he has it in John 5:00
- 11:10and 6:00, but the sacrament in 3rd Nephi is so much richer.
- 11:17I I counted up the verses, I counted up all the words we
- 11:20have. Matthew, Mark and Luke have two
- 11:22or three verses each, but they pretty much overlap.
- 11:25So you're talking about 35 chapter 18, where Jesus then,
- 11:30after he has healed the sick and the wounded and blessed the
- 11:35children, he, he, they they don't want to go.
- 11:40The day has been a long day, and Jesus says, OK, you're probably
- 11:45hungry, let me give you something to eat.
- 11:47But spiritually and there he blesses the sacrament.
- 11:51But it's so much more than blessing it.
- 11:53So we've got two or three verses in the New Testament and then we
- 11:57have this beautiful section of at least nine verses explaining
- 12:03the sacrament. And I feel like we would never
- 12:07have had so much misunderstanding about what the
- 12:12Last Supper was or what the the sacrament bread is supposed to
- 12:16be. I feel like if this one little
- 12:18thing had been known or been shared in our New Testament, we
- 12:23would not have had so many misunderstandings amongst
- 12:26Christians on the sacrament. Yeah, give an example of what
- 12:29you mean by that. Starting in chapter 18, verse
- 12:32two, he has them go the apostles or the disciples go and get the
- 12:36bread and the wine. And then it says in verse 3,
- 12:39when the disciples came with the bread, he took the bread and
- 12:42break it and blessed it. And he gave unto the disciples
- 12:46and the commandment they should eat.
- 12:47Now that sounds very consistent. It's not that different.
- 12:51But I love verse 4. When they had eaten they were
- 12:53filled. It's a feast and it's not just a
- 12:56feast of food as you mentioned. I think it's a spiritual feast.
- 13:00He commanded that they should give to the multitude.
- 13:02Then the apostles are or the disciples are able to serve the
- 13:05multitude also were filled. It says in verse five.
- 13:10And then he goes on and he says, I want you to do the same thing
- 13:13in the church. But at the bottom of verse five
- 13:16he says, all of those who shall believe and be baptized in my
- 13:20name. And this shall ye always observe
- 13:23to do even as I have done verse 7 This shall ye do in
- 13:28remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you, that it
- 13:31shall be a testimony of the Father, that you do always
- 13:35Remember Me, that ye do always Remember Me.
- 13:38And you shall have his spirit to be with me.
- 13:40Do those words sound familiar? Jack, this sounds like our
- 13:43sacrament prayer in Moroni, but I just feel like he's explaining
- 13:47it so thoroughly here. And you know, I I received my I
- 13:51studied with the Catholics in my Graduate School and they are so
- 13:55different, so many different opinions on what the bread means
- 13:58and does it become Christ's body and are we drinking blood?
- 14:01And you know, I'm just so grateful for this account in 3rd
- 14:06Nephi. I feel like Joseph Smith
- 14:08understood more about the sacrament after translating
- 14:12third Nephi than he did in all of his earlier years, going to
- 14:15all these different churches. And after the His Last Supper,
- 14:24he and the 12 or the 11 leave the upper room and walk outside
- 14:31down the mount of of Moriah, across the little kidron, the
- 14:36Creek there, over to the Mount of Olives, where there is an
- 14:40olive orchard and it sounds as if by the name Gethsemane.
- 14:43There's an olive press there, and in the New Testament it
- 14:46describes him praying there and suffering.
- 14:50So as I looked for that in the Book of Mormon, I was so touched
- 14:56by the continuity and the depth. But it's really hard for
- 15:01biblical scholars if only one gospel says something like Luke
- 15:05says an Angel came, Luke says he bled from every poor, they sort
- 15:10of throw that out because there's just one.
- 15:13So I think it is very significant that as we go
- 15:16through all the many, many, many scriptures on the Savior's
- 15:20suffering in the Book of Mormon that we find one that also talks
- 15:24about he bled from every poor. The Book of Mormon clearly
- 15:28understands that Jesus will be a suffering servant.
- 15:31Why people in antiquity didn't more readily understand this, I
- 15:35don't know. Because it's right in Isaiah 53
- 15:39that he will suffer and he will be the the Suffering servant.
- 15:43And of course Abinad, I will quote that and use that in the
- 15:47context of explaining how Jesus will overcome death and will
- 15:51then be resurrected. So those passages in Abinadi are
- 15:55very relevant to Easter. I don't know exactly when the
- 16:00idea that the servant was Jesus might have gotten lost, but I
- 16:06think by the time of Jesus people were sort of thinking of
- 16:10the the suffering servant as Israel, the House of Israel, and
- 16:15Israel by then had suffered. They they were abused by their
- 16:19landlords and. They had been taken to Babylon
- 16:22and they had actually been kind of brought back to life as a
- 16:25people. And I think they might have been
- 16:31seeing Isaiah talking about them as a people rather than as the
- 16:37Lord. And when you think about it, it
- 16:40is a little bit at least scary and unbecoming to think that a
- 16:45Lord that Jesus God could come and suffer and die this way.
- 16:51So it was a a striking idea, a a disturbing idea.
- 16:57But the Book of Mormon got it. And I Ben and I gets it.
- 17:00Well, let's just read some of them.
- 17:02I want to start with this beautiful one from Alma, chapter
- 17:04seven. He shall go forth, suffering,
- 17:06pains, and afflictions and temptations of every kind, and
- 17:10this that the word might be fulfilled, which saith that he
- 17:13taketh upon him the pains and sicknesses of his people.
- 17:19That's not in the Bible. And he taketh upon him death,
- 17:24that he may lose the bands of the death which bind the people,
- 17:27and he will take upon him their infirmities.
- 17:30And His bowels may be filled with mercy according to the
- 17:32flesh, that he may know according to the flesh, how to
- 17:35succor His people. And the Book of Mormon talks
- 17:38about this as an infinite atonement that goes back to
- 17:41Jacob. Many of the teachings that Alma
- 17:44is crystallizing so well there in Alma Chapter 7.
- 17:49Threads of those are being woven together earlier in the Book of
- 17:53Mormon, Jacob, he talks about what an Angel told him, that
- 17:58Christ will come among the Jews and be crucified, and that no
- 18:03other nation on earth would crucify their God.
- 18:06I think that's interesting, that that among the Jews, God was
- 18:11viewed as so perfect and so transcendent that they couldn't
- 18:16imagine him coming down and being among people and
- 18:21suffering. And not fitting their their,
- 18:24their mold. You know, he he was a poor guy.
- 18:27He wasn't the high priest. He he lived in Nazareth of all
- 18:30places. You know, he just didn't fit
- 18:33their mold. And they weren't willing,
- 18:35because of it says, because of wickedness and other interests,
- 18:41to kind of change. But I'm sure the devil was
- 18:44working overtime on him too. And not only that, but the Angel
- 18:48speaking to Jacob actually says that this is the only people
- 18:52that were prepared or were able to bring about the death of
- 18:59Jesus. And we have to remember that the
- 19:01death of Jesus was necessary. It's not a mistake that he dies.
- 19:06He must come to complete the atonement that he must take upon
- 19:12himself and suffer in all ways, which includes death and pain
- 19:18and bleeding from every pore. And my favorite verse on that
- 19:22one is in actually Nephi when he starts quoting all these brass
- 19:27plates prophets that we don't have.
- 19:29First Nephi, Chapter 19. And I want to start in verse
- 19:33eight. He cometh according to the words
- 19:35of the Angel, In 600 years from the time my father left
- 19:38Jerusalem. The world, because of their
- 19:41iniquity, shall judge him as a thing of not.
- 19:44Wherever they scourge him, they suffer it, and they smite him,
- 19:49and he suffereth. Yeah, they spit upon him, and he
- 19:52suffereth it because of the loving kindness.
- 19:55And then, skipping down to verse 10, the God of Jacob yieldeth
- 19:59himself, according to the words of the Angel, as a man into the
- 20:03hands of the wicked men, to be lifted up, according to the
- 20:06words of Zenik. So we've got a prophet we don't
- 20:09know about yet to be crucified, according to the words of Neom.
- 20:14And to be buried in a sepulchre, according to the words of Zenus.
- 20:17So Zenus, the allegory of the olive tree, knew that he was
- 20:20going to be buried. But we've got a lot more from
- 20:22Zenus on this. On the death, this is
- 20:23interesting, he says, which he spake concerning the three days
- 20:26of darkness, which should be a sign given of his death, and to
- 20:31those who should inhabit the Isles of the sea.
- 20:34So Zennis really had a lot to say about the people that were
- 20:39scattered Israel that Jacob grabs onto in chapter five with
- 20:43the oligarch of the Olive tree. And then we've got another one
- 20:46continuing on down at the bottom of verse 11.
- 20:49And Xena talks about the earthquakes and the tragedies
- 20:51that are going to come in 11 and 12.
- 20:53But these verses were taken out of the scriptures.
- 20:58I mean, they're in the brass plates, but they aren't in ours.
- 21:02I I'm fascinated that the plain and precious things that would
- 21:07take away from the validity of the Book of Mormon are what were
- 21:10taken out and also the misunderstanding of who the
- 21:13Messiah was. You know the most important
- 21:15things Satan knew what to take out?
- 21:17Don't identify the Savior, and don't identify his his other
- 21:21sheep. That's right.
- 21:23But there are still hints, even in the Old Testament, of many of
- 21:26these things. Oh.
- 21:27Really. That we could talk about another
- 21:30time. Right now, we're just focusing
- 21:31on the Book of Mormon, but some of them, like in Isaiah 53 that
- 21:35we've talked about and other places in prophecies do hint at
- 21:41some of these things and the Psalms as well.
- 21:45We have to also go to King Benjamin, because he's the one
- 21:49that validates the Gospel of Luke with the bleeding of every
- 21:52pore. This is in Mosiah chapter 3,
- 21:55verse seven and eight. And lo, he shall suffer
- 21:59temptations and pain of body, hunger, thirst, fatigue, even
- 22:03more than man can suffer, except to be unto death.
- 22:06For behold, blood cometh out of every pore.
- 22:09So great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and
- 22:12abominations of this people, and he shall be called Jesus Christ,
- 22:17the Son of God, the Father of heaven and earth.
- 22:20You already mentioned that the Creator of the beginning.
- 22:22And then he continues on in verse 9 talking about the
- 22:24scourging and crucifixion. And I thought, oh, couldn't
- 22:29people just say that Joseph Smith borrowed these ideas from
- 22:33the book of Morm and from the Bible, And these are all part of
- 22:36the Easter traditions and the stories there.
- 22:39And crucifixion was what the Romans did.
- 22:41But I did a little bit of digging and it sounds to me like
- 22:44the Assyrians in 700 BC were already practicing crucifixion.
- 22:50This abominable, torturous way of death was part of the
- 22:54Assyrians and Persians and Greeks before the Romans took it
- 22:58over. Even at Bechayan, Saul and his
- 23:01sons are hung on a tree. And so this that goes back very
- 23:08early into Jewish and Israelite history.
- 23:11But I don't think we can say Abinadai and King Benjamin and
- 23:15Nephi and Zenith and all these different people who have
- 23:19proseified this are just borrowing from the New Testament
- 23:22later when Joseph is translating this, because of the theology.
- 23:26When I write out the words side by side, you always get the
- 23:30breadth of the message. When you look at the Book of
- 23:32Mormon, you see why he had to suffer, and it often takes it
- 23:36back to Adam and Eve, which is completely misunderstood by most
- 23:40people who believe in the Bible. Both the Judaic and Islamic and
- 23:43Christian traditions do not understand the Fall, as members
- 23:47of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do.
- 23:49But the Book of Mormon is where we learn it, and I really feel
- 23:52like by tying the atonement and the death and resurrection of
- 23:54the Lord to the Fall, it testifies of the plan of
- 23:59salvation. And you don't get that in the.
- 24:01Bible you don't. And validating what you're
- 24:03saying, the Angel will continue in.
- 24:06That's the question, can we find things that go back that late?
- 24:10What will his blood actually atone for?
- 24:14And it mentions 3 things. One, it will atone for those who
- 24:19have fallen by the transgression of Adam.
- 24:21So there you have this expansive view of all of humanity being
- 24:29covered by all of. Humanity.
- 24:30The resurrection of Jesus. But this was a course correction
- 24:34in the 19th century. If Joseph were writing to his
- 24:36people, if Joseph Smith were a product of his environment, he
- 24:39would have known that the majority of Americans at this
- 24:42time believed the Calvinistic thought that the atonement was
- 24:45limited to those who were the elect.
- 24:49The Book of Mormon tears down every false doctrine that was
- 24:53being taught then it wasn't part of their environment.
- 24:56This is revealed truth. And here's another one.
- 24:59Let's keep going. What else does the Angel say?
- 25:02The blood will atone for those who have died, not knowing the
- 25:07will of God concerning them. Innocent children, all the
- 25:11depravity of man that we the whole messed up idea that
- 25:16they're born in sin is gone. That's right.
- 25:19And what this will bring about is the resurrection of all
- 25:23people. Immortality.
- 25:25And there's a third one. The Angel tells Benjamin that he
- 25:28will die to atone for the sins of those who have ignorantly
- 25:33sinned. That's interesting.
- 25:36Now of course most sins are conscious and we think a
- 25:40violation of a law. You need to know, but not all.
- 25:44A victim should not feel guilty. There is a passage also in back
- 25:50in the Torah, in the Jewish law, that talks about ignorance, sin,
- 25:55and that if you can show that you didn't know that what was
- 25:59being done was in inconsistent with or in violation with the
- 26:04the law, the punishment was different.
- 26:09Here this is also being recognized that if you have
- 26:13sinned ignorantly, if you didn't know better, truly the atonement
- 26:20will take care of that and so you don't have to agonize over
- 26:24things that you've done. I made a mistake, I didn't mean
- 26:27it. I didn't even know about it.
- 26:30And how do you fix that? Sometimes you can't fix that,
- 26:33but the Savior and the infinite nature of the Atonement can do
- 26:36that. And as I look at the next
- 26:44section, we've gone through a lot of the suffering of the
- 26:47Lord. But we want to talk about the
- 26:49trial for just a minute. Jesus does get arrested there at
- 26:54Gethsemane, and according to John, there were Roman soldiers
- 26:59as well as probably a Temple Guards soldiers from the Jewish
- 27:03world. And they take Jesus and they
- 27:06they hold him for a little while because I think they arrested
- 27:10him a little quicker than they might have thought and they've
- 27:13got to stall for a little while. Because you can't go to Pilate
- 27:17until sunrise and it's still dark, They're coming with
- 27:20torches, so that's when they go to the high priest palace.
- 27:23Caiaphas's palace, At least it wasn't.
- 27:25He wasn't the High Priest, but. I believe that Caiaphas must
- 27:27have talked to Pilate and said this is what we're planning to
- 27:30do. We know where he's going to be
- 27:33because Judas has told us that and we know that your guards
- 27:37there in the Antonia Fortress, we'll be kind of shocked if they
- 27:41see us with torches, they'll wonder what's going on.
- 27:44So can you please help us with your guards?
- 27:46They had to communicate because the guards are there.
- 27:48You're right. I hadn't put that together, OK?
- 27:50But you wouldn't want to go to meet Pilot.
- 27:52They must have said we'll we'll see you at the sunrise.
- 27:56We'll see you at 5:00. Oh, and and we're not going to
- 27:58go into your palace. We don't want to be contaminated
- 28:01for the Passover. We'll see.
- 28:02We'll be outside. You just come to the window and
- 28:05talk to us or the balcony or whatever.
- 28:06We will bring him and and this is showing deference to the
- 28:10Romans. Yes, it is.
- 28:11What Caiaphas more than anything else wants to do is to show that
- 28:15he is loyal to the Romans. So they will leave him alone and
- 28:20let Caiaphas be in charge of the temple.
- 28:22And so Caiaphas takes Jesus there.
- 28:26And Pilate of course says, all right, So what is the legal
- 28:30cause of action that you have against him?
- 28:34And the word in Greek there is very clear.
- 28:36What is the idea, the legal cause of action?
- 28:40Pilot, Pilot doesn't want to hear about your theological
- 28:42problems or, you know, personal problems you might have.
- 28:46But what what's the law here? And they say to him, we would
- 28:52not have brought him to you if we had not found him doing cock
- 28:58on. What's cock on?
- 28:59Evil, or the word doing evil, is Cacon Poyos, and a Cacopoyos is,
- 29:08in Latin, a maleficus. We wouldn't have brought him to
- 29:12you if we hadn't found him working magic wonders.
- 29:16Oh his miracles. His miracle workers.
- 29:18So they're calling him a miracle worker.
- 29:20How is that against the Roman law?
- 29:22The two greatest offenses in Roman law #1 being a robber, a
- 29:29bandit, a Brig, and and Jesus will be crucified with two
- 29:33robbers. By Romans, they're being put on
- 29:35the street. They're by the Damascus Gate,
- 29:38where people will see that these people have violated Roman law.
- 29:43The Romans also had laws that go back into the Roman 12 tables.
- 29:49One of these said that if you were using evil spirits, if you
- 29:53were a wonder worker, a maleficus, this was a most
- 29:56serious issue. And so Caiaphas is aware of
- 30:00this. What does he say?
- 30:01Pilate, If you don't do something about this, you are no
- 30:06friend of Tiberius of Caesar. How?
- 30:11How would Jesus be a threat to Caesar?
- 30:13Yeah, because they're saying he is working these.
- 30:17These miracles. And now, does the Book of Mormon
- 30:21say anything about this? Well, it absolutely does.
- 30:25OK, I wrestled with this question and biblical scholars
- 30:29also wonder why was Jesus crucified?
- 30:32And my argument that I've just made is one that you won't find
- 30:36very often, that Jesus was basically accused because of his
- 30:40miracle working. Well, it's in the text.
- 30:43I think you have the evidence in the text.
- 30:45And the raising of Lazarus, of course, created legal problems
- 30:48as well. We know that.
- 30:51But what we learn most? This hit me the strongest when I
- 30:55found in King Benjamin's speech, which we've been talking about
- 30:59the language that says after he has performed all of these
- 31:03mighty miracles, they shall consider him a man and not a
- 31:08God, and shall say he hath a devil.
- 31:13What does that mean? He has a devil who is his
- 31:17sidekick. And they even accused Jesus of
- 31:20doing that during his ministry. Is that right?
- 31:22Did they really? John Chapter 9.
- 31:25Yes, and the the. The driving out of the swine.
- 31:29Yes. They send lawyers from Jerusalem
- 31:33to Galilee to investigate this case, and they ask him, by what
- 31:39authority are you doing this? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:42And they say the same thing when he cleanses the temple.
- 31:44And it's either by God or by the devil.
- 31:48You also have back in the second ephi chapter 10, where it says
- 31:52that he will perform mighty miracles and because of those
- 31:56miracles he will be put to death.
- 31:58So this is Easter. We don't have to dwell on the
- 32:02the the negative, the dying, and the death and the crucifixion.
- 32:06But it does help to remember that what we have at Easter is a
- 32:12victory, the victory of God over the forces of evil.
- 32:17And these forces, they are beyond our control.
- 32:22We can do our best to have the spirit to keep them at Bay.
- 32:26We can put on the armor of God to keep them at Bay, but the
- 32:30devil does have power to reign on the earth.
- 32:32And ultimately that won't be cured until the very final
- 32:37Millennial day where he will be restrained and will have Easter
- 32:41for 1000 years. But then, at the end, the
- 32:46resurrection and glory will come.
- 32:53But let's start about the resurrection that I want to go
- 32:55to Samuel the Lamanite. On that one.
- 32:58So Samuel is up on the wall prophesying in Helaman chapter
- 33:0214. And after he talks about the
- 33:05sign of his birth being light for those day and a night and a
- 33:10day, he says another sign I give you This is verse 14, a sign of
- 33:15his death. And then he continues on for
- 33:17several verses. For behold, he surely must die
- 33:21that salvation may come to bring to pass the resurrection of the
- 33:26dead, and that thereby men may be brought into the presence of
- 33:29the Lord. And then in verse 16 little ways
- 33:33down, and he redeemeth all mankind from the first death,
- 33:38that spiritual death, that all mankind by the fall of Adam
- 33:43being cut off from the presence of the Lord.
- 33:46And then in 17 behold, the resurrection of Christ redeemeth
- 33:49mankind, Yeah, even all mankind. You know this is so
- 33:54theologically packed and if you don't think it's significant,
- 33:56just cut and paste the biblical verses right next to it and
- 34:00realize how much more Samuel the Lamanite is preaching here.
- 34:04And in the prophecy, Samuel the Lamanite will actually quote
- 34:09King Benjamin, and he will be called Jesus Christ, the Son of
- 34:14God, the Father of heaven and earth, the creator of all things
- 34:17from the beginning. So Samuel knows what we call
- 34:22Mosiah Chapter 3. This never could have happened
- 34:25from Joseph Smith translating this with a quill.
- 34:27And I mean that he couldn't have done this because he didn't even
- 34:31have the small plates when he's translating this.
- 34:33It's amazing, yeah. What I like to look at, though,
- 34:36is to say, all right, So what is it that Samuel's adding here?
- 34:39Samuel emphasizes that he will die for all men.
- 34:43The universality of the Atonement of Jesus Christ is
- 34:47only described in the Book of Mormon that we get it in the
- 34:50doctrine comments later, but it is not in the Bible to the same
- 34:53degree that we read it here. It's powerful.
- 34:57Easter is such a glorious time, and I have never appreciated
- 35:01what the Book of Mormon can add to the last week of Christ's
- 35:05life. I usually looked at Third Nephi
- 35:07as my Easter text, but I feel like the prophets before have
- 35:11just enriched my appreciation for my Savior and my Redeemer.
- 35:16And they believed in Jesus Christ.
- 35:19I think the best place where we have what I would call the
- 35:24Nephite Declaration of faith is found in Alma chapter 33.
- 35:29Alma 33 is the conclusion of what is really one speech in
- 35:34chapter 32 and 33 to the Zoramites where he's been
- 35:38talking to them about faith and how you can have faith in Christ
- 35:44and perfect. And so he ends by saying this is
- 35:48what this will lead you to. And then at the end of that
- 35:51statement, by the way, Alma will quote from Zenith.
- 35:56And so we know that Alma who actually had the brass plates,
- 36:02he is the high priest, he has been reading these and he knows
- 36:06these texts as well. And so Alma, who had been
- 36:10converted by a vision of Jesus, where he saw Jesus as he called
- 36:16upon him to atone for his sins, and that changed his life, He
- 36:22now wants to tell those Zoramites You also can be
- 36:26blessed by this Jesus if you will simply believe in him.
- 36:31And what do you need to do to believe in Jesus?
- 36:33In Alma? 3322 Alma says, Believe in the
- 36:38Son of God, that he will come to redeem his people, that he shall
- 36:42suffer and die to atone for their sins, and that he shall
- 36:47rise again from the dead, which shall bring to pass the
- 36:50resurrection, that all men shall stand before him to be judged.
- 36:56That seven point Articles of Faith, you might call it, is
- 37:01something that Alma has I think, pulled together from
- 37:06Declarations of Faith by Nephi, by Jacob, by Benjamin, by
- 37:11Abinadai. And if you look at these you can
- 37:15see these different 7 elements in first Nephi 19 Nephi will
- 37:21mention five of them. He will come to redeem his
- 37:24people, suffer, die atone, rise from the dead, and bring to pass
- 37:28the resurrection. Jacob in second Nephi Chapter 9
- 37:32will include all seven of these as well.
- 37:36So you can see a standardizing of what I would call the Nephi
- 37:40Declaration of Faith, and for me this is a wonderful Easter
- 37:46message. And this Easter season, may you
- 37:49all rejoice that our Savior is our Redeemer.
- 37:53And no matter where we are, morning or night, there is room
- 37:57for our Savior's arms to embrace us and to accept us after we
- 38:01repent. And we are so glad on this
- 38:04Easter week to bear testimony to the world and that Jesus is
- 38:11truly the Son of God, our heavenly Lord, who loves and
- 38:16blesses us and rejoices when we come unto him, that we may have
- 38:21the joy that he would like us to receive from him, that we may be
- 38:26one with him and with our Father in heaven, and with all of our
- 38:33fellow beings here on this planet.
- 38:35In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
