- 0:14You know the scriptures testify of the word of God that it is a
- 0:17double-edged sword. And there's many reasons for
- 0:21that. It speaks of its Precision when
- 0:22it comes to conviction and highlighting the things that we
- 0:26think are hidden from God, but as someone popularly, once said
- 0:30that it's a double-edged sword because it first first cuts the
- 0:33preacher before, it does the congregation.
- 0:36And that is certainly true. Especially in this study of 1st
- 0:38Samuel. I must testify in the presence
- 0:40of God that it has A riveting experience to open up this
- 0:45specific book and to just see the the wisdom of God and
- 0:50placing this scripture for his people for all time.
- 0:55You know. Again, you've heard me say this
- 0:56often but I'll say it again. God could have given us a
- 1:00Systematic Theology. If you ever read a Systematic
- 1:04Theology book, it's one of these thick books that just puts
- 1:07everything in categories and definitions and but God doesn't
- 1:11do that. He does give us definitions.
- 1:13He does give us theological terms, but he also gives us
- 1:16stories. He gives us poems.
- 1:19He gives us journal entries and that is what we are reading.
- 1:23Today. We are reading a story, a true
- 1:25story with many, many Rich principles that we can apply to
- 1:28our lives. And so meet me in your Bibles.
- 1:31And first Samuel chapter 19, We learned last week in first
- 1:39Samuel 18 of a pivotal moment that would change the climate of
- 1:44this narrative for the rest of the book, and it was triggered.
- 1:48It was unlocked. It was Unleashed by Saul's
- 1:53jealousy, his Envy his insecurity, which kicked into a
- 2:00new gear and would alter the direction of David's life in a
- 2:05very significant way. And in these Next few chapters.
- 2:08We are going to see the extent of this man's malice.
- 2:11We are going to see just how far sin can take a person even as
- 2:15dignified as a king, even as dignified as somebody who is
- 2:19Anointed by a well-known Godly profit.
- 2:22But before we move on in chapter 19, it would it would not be
- 2:26right to not track the final verses of 18, which we didn't
- 2:31cover last week because it flows beautifully.
- 2:33Remember that the chapters and the verses are not inspired and
- 2:37Sometimes these breaks can ruin the flow for not careful to see
- 2:41past them. And so before we go to chapter
- 2:4319, let's go to verse 17 of chapter 18 and let's pray before
- 2:47we study together. Lord, we thank you for the
- 2:53written word of God, our hearts. Come alive.
- 2:58When your Holy Spirit reveals to us.
- 3:00These truths. We hunger for the word, the pure
- 3:04word, the pure word of God. We pray that we would be able to
- 3:08receive it with humility and that it would be digested by
- 3:11your grace so that we can apply it to our lives.
- 3:13Protect us from the great error of Herod.
- 3:17Who heard John gladly but never changed.
- 3:21Change us, sanctify us, transform Us by the power of
- 3:26your word. Your son said, in that beautiful
- 3:29prayer sanctify them by your truth.
- 3:32Your word is truth. And so we submit ourselves to
- 3:36the word believing that you will change us.
- 3:39As you see our humility and our desperation for righteousness.
- 3:43We come to you now in the name of your beloved Son.
- 3:46Jesus Christ. Amen.
- 3:51I hope you remember last week. Saul's jealousy was budding.
- 3:57And now, he's craving to eliminate eradicate, David from
- 4:01the face of the Earth, and he's attempted here and there, but
- 4:05his plots have not ceased. They have only increased in
- 4:08carnality and deception. And we see that here unfolding
- 4:13in verse 17, after David escaped solemn, more than one occasion
- 4:17occasion from his Spear, and his wrath verse seventeen thousand.
- 4:22Saul said to David? Here is my elder daughter.
- 4:25Mihrab. I will give her to you for a
- 4:28wife. Only be Valiant for me and fight
- 4:32the Lord's battles force. All thought that not my hand be
- 4:37against them. But let the hand of the
- 4:39Philistines be against him. And David said to Saul, who am
- 4:43I? And who are my relatives?
- 4:45My father's clan in Israel that I should be son-in-law to the
- 4:49king. But at the time, when me ABS
- 4:52Saul's daughter should have been given to David.
- 4:55She was given to hide real, the me Jolla tight for a wife.
- 5:01So now it's always up to something.
- 5:05We read it. We have commentary on his
- 5:07attitude and on his heart, but now he comes up with this new
- 5:10scheme. I'm going to present my eldest
- 5:13daughter as a potential wife, to David.
- 5:18And it's not because I really want a Godly Man to marry my
- 5:21daughter. It's because I want to use my
- 5:23daughter as bait to position David in a way where he would
- 5:28jeopardize his life Behind Enemy Lines and that he would be
- 5:32eliminated by somebody else. And I Look innocent though.
- 5:35I have satisfied. My murderous appetite.
- 5:41Now. We've been studying this book.
- 5:43So you should remember a certain detail.
- 5:46Why should this be a question mark from the beginning?
- 5:48Why is Saul offering his daughter a suspicion to begin
- 5:53with? He already earned it.
- 5:59Did you hear that? What was one of the rewards for
- 6:03the person that would eliminate Goliath?
- 6:06Well, if you remember the prize among many was somebody would
- 6:12have the daughter for marriage David already earned this reward
- 6:19and saw is proving that what he's proven already that he does
- 6:23not keep his word. He does not, he does not care
- 6:25about whether or not he is a man of integrity concerning his
- 6:28promises. No, he should have given her up
- 6:31already. But instead he uses her again.
- 6:34Playing off of David's ignorance or probably his humility to not
- 6:37demand for her. And he's saying, I want you to
- 6:41go fight again, and then I'll give her to you.
- 6:45And David already proved himself, but perhaps, he and his
- 6:49innocence is just seeing a father who really Treasures the
- 6:52value of his daughter. And so, he's thinking that he
- 6:55needs to earn or proved himself to be more worthy as a candidate
- 6:57to be a husband for, for the Kings.
- 7:00Beautiful princess. And so he's ready to go fight.
- 7:05Presuming that Saul again, is just trying to test David, as a
- 7:09poor man who doesn't have much of of a dowry to give.
- 7:12So go and fight. Not only is David presented with
- 7:17this apparent, beautiful picture of a father who Treasures his
- 7:21daughter, but now he's facing this Mirage of piety because
- 7:25look what he says only be Valiant for me and fight.
- 7:28Who's battles the Lord's battles since when were you concerned
- 7:33about the Lord Saul? Fight the Lord's battles.
- 7:38Now, he's using what he's done before.
- 7:39He's using spiritual verbiage. Any idea why he's using God's
- 7:45name in this specifically, with David consider.
- 7:49What kind of man David was, was? He not a man after God's heart?
- 7:51Was he not a Godly Man, a spiritual man.
- 7:53He was there for Saul is attempting to persuade David to
- 7:58biting by using spirituality as a way of convincing him that
- 8:03they're on the same level and that, and that salt is a
- 8:05spiritual man. It's so conniving.
- 8:08It's so horrific, but welcome to an illustration of the Stand up
- 8:13someone sin. They are willing to use people
- 8:17like Solace his daughter and they are even willing to invoke
- 8:20the name of God to satisfy the flesh.
- 8:27I know you fear God right? You fear God so you would never
- 8:30dare use God's name in vain to advance a personal agenda.
- 8:35But here's the, here's the Trap of a person who fears God, you
- 8:38think everybody else thinks that way.
- 8:41Ah, Just because you grew up in a God-fearing family, just
- 8:45because you go to a God-fearing church does not mean everybody.
- 8:48Fears God. There are people who are just as
- 8:52easy as they are to breathe, just as simple as it is, to
- 8:56drink a glass of water. They can call and invoke God's
- 8:59name on a situation though. It's a total lie.
- 9:02This is what jealousy is doing to this man.
- 9:04It's possessing him. It's overtaking him and his
- 9:08sinful heart has no issue bulldozing over people using
- 9:12people calling God's name on the matter saying that they swear on
- 9:17God's name say that they will be innocent when they stand before.
- 9:20God concerning the matter. It's horrific.
- 9:23It's terrifying. And that's not just for Saul.
- 9:27That is a warning for all men. And if you don't believe me, let
- 9:32me ask you this. The David not do something
- 9:36similar later on, in his life. Saul is asking David to go to
- 9:44war, not so that he can actually see Victory, so that David would
- 9:47be killed in war ring a bell, okay.
- 9:54Because David when he was caught or scared that he would be
- 9:57caught in his sin did the same thing to a man by the name of
- 10:00Uriah? And so this isn't just applied
- 10:06to Saul as a unique Crazy Character.
- 10:08Know, it's the potential of every human that is.
- 10:13Unfortunately, hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
- 10:17But coming back to the story, The this heartening thing about
- 10:20all this is that we have commentary and why Saul is doing
- 10:22this. We know we're told because he
- 10:25wants him to be slain by the Philistines and David were
- 10:31assuming is totally unaware of that plan burning inside of
- 10:35Saul's heart. And so we wish we can at this
- 10:39point scream into the story and say David, it's a trap.
- 10:43He's manipulating you. It's all a plan to try to get
- 10:48rid of you. And here's the thing.
- 10:53David as we're about to find out, isn't going to fall victim
- 10:56to this scheme, and it's not because David was necessarily
- 11:00Discerning. Because as Discerning as you
- 11:02might be, we do not know the depths of the human heart.
- 11:07We don't know what in our own hearts.
- 11:08And we certainly don't know when it's somebody else's heart.
- 11:12But here's the encouraging thing.
- 11:13David didn't necessarily need to know.
- 11:15Yes, there's a responsibility of being Discerning, but that can
- 11:18only take you so far. There's something much more
- 11:21important than being a Discerning person.
- 11:22And as valuable as that is and it is this to be a man or woman
- 11:25who walks with God. Because I want to tell you
- 11:28something about David, although he did not know what saw was
- 11:31planning to do. God knew.
- 11:34God knew. And because God knew God would
- 11:39protect his servant. God would Shield him.
- 11:44God would providentially protect and provide for him because that
- 11:49is one of the Privileges of a person who walks with God as
- 11:55David dead. Because no matter what Saul, or
- 11:5910,000, saws, or even the nation's plan against a servant
- 12:03of God, whether it's a man or a woman, there is a scripture that
- 12:08relates to this and you can apply it to your life as you
- 12:11desire to obey. God, fully with your existence.
- 12:15Proverbs 21. 30, you don't have to turn there.
- 12:17But just listen to these amazing words.
- 12:20Why didn't Saul's plan worked because quote?
- 12:23No wisdom. No understanding.
- 12:27No counsel. Can Avail against the Lord?
- 12:30That's why. As secretive as it is, as
- 12:36brilliant as it might be. No council.
- 12:41No understanding. No wisdom.
- 12:46Can Avail against the Lord? The safest place you are in this
- 12:50life. My brother is in the shadow of
- 12:53the Almighty. Stay close to the Lord and it
- 12:58doesn't matter what he'll belches out of the Abyss.
- 13:01It won't be able to Avail against you because you're in
- 13:03the hand of God. Notice David and verse 18 is
- 13:10humble. Answer, who am I or my
- 13:12relatives? My father's clan in Israel that
- 13:14I should be son-in-law to the king.
- 13:16That's not false humility. That's true.
- 13:18Humility. And this is a text that proves
- 13:22what we study last week that surely David.
- 13:24He passed the test of man's praise saw failed.
- 13:28Miserably When Praise went to David Saul crumbled because of
- 13:33his flesh. And the jealousy that overtook
- 13:35him David. No recorded answer, but here's
- 13:38proof just because the nation sunk his name, didn't mean that
- 13:43he had to become a proud person. He was able to keep his humble
- 13:48reputation before him and he was able still to see himself as a
- 13:52small insignificant person. And it doesn't matter what
- 13:56people were saying. There's no matter what songs
- 13:57they were singing. I Know Myself and I am small.
- 14:02I know my roots. I know what I'm capable of.
- 14:05I know where I came from. And this is going to be the
- 14:11secret too much of David's victory in his life, especially
- 14:14early on. But do these words sound
- 14:16familiar to you? Think, back think, way back in
- 14:20the same book, but think do these words sound familiar to
- 14:22anybody. Then anybody say very similar
- 14:26things about himself. Ah, go to 1st Samuel 921 when we
- 14:33were introduced to Saul and notice what Saul said, when
- 14:36Samuel came to tell him that he would be the king of Israel.
- 14:40Saul said in first Samuel, 921 Saul answered.
- 14:45Am I not have Benjamin a'ight. The least of the tribes of
- 14:48Israel and is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of The
- 14:53Tribe of Benjamin. Why then have you spoken to me
- 14:56in this way? That's a warning to us.
- 15:02Saul said, very similar things to David but look house all
- 15:05ended up. See, it's one thing to be
- 15:09humble. It's another thing to stay
- 15:10humble. Humility, like any other virtue
- 15:14in our lives. Must be nurtured and protected?
- 15:16Let's it becomes corrupted. And so we have to understand
- 15:20that we can all start in that place, but it must be
- 15:24continually watched there must be surveillance in our heart and
- 15:30how we respond to things and we must judge ourselves.
- 15:33As Paul said, lest we be judge, judge yourself.
- 15:36Examine yourself, question yourself.
- 15:39And then when you discover something as you were honestly,
- 15:41trying to see what's truly there, bring it before the Lord
- 15:44and let him deal with it. When I read this about David, I
- 15:47said, praise God for David, but I thought salsa the same thing.
- 15:52So we need to continually be filled with the spirit as we
- 15:55just heard earlier. Being filled with the spirit is
- 15:58not a one-time deal. Can I ask you something brother
- 16:00and sister? When's the last time you ask the
- 16:02Holy Spirit to fill you? When's the last time you got
- 16:05before God, before you went to work in your car, as you had
- 16:08your cup of cup? When's the last time you said,
- 16:10as I fill this cup with wonderful coffee?
- 16:13Holy Spirit, fill my heart with yourself.
- 16:17See that command in the Greek is not a one-time thing.
- 16:19It's not a flu shot that you get that command is a continual
- 16:23present tense. You're always asking your always
- 16:26seeking to be filled with the Holy Spirit and we come to verse
- 16:3119, but at the time, when mihrab Saul's daughter should have been
- 16:35given to David. So clearly he passed the test
- 16:38clearly he accomplished what saw asked of him, but then salt pull
- 16:42something that we should not be surprised concerning Saul.
- 16:46When he was supposed to give his daughter.
- 16:49He not only withheld, the daughter, he gave the GAO to
- 16:53another guy altogether. Any idea why he did that?
- 17:06Everybody's on point in this Bible study tonight.
- 17:08Very good. He wanted to wound even in
- 17:13another way. So, I'm going to make you a
- 17:16promise. And I'm not going to keep the
- 17:19promise. With the hopes that I will
- 17:23frustrate you. Maybe even make you jealous,
- 17:28right? Because this man knows what it's
- 17:31like to be corrupted by jealousy.
- 17:33Let me see if he'll work on David.
- 17:35So I'm going to give my daughter to someone else and I'm going to
- 17:39even invite you to the wedding. So that, while that bride is
- 17:45there, you're going to watch and realize that should be mine.
- 17:49She should belong to me. And let's see.
- 17:53What's going to happen to you David.
- 17:56Let's see if you're going to embarrass yourself in front of
- 17:59Israel. Let's see if you're going to
- 18:00retaliate. So now I have an excuse to get
- 18:03back at UCL devilish. This is We do not know the
- 18:09extent of our wickedness. We are very creative.
- 18:11In fact, God judges, his people at one point and says that he
- 18:15credits them in a very ugly way. They come up with new ways of
- 18:20being Wicked. But David doesn't respond to
- 18:27this David. Doesn't react to this.
- 18:28He doesn't submit to the flesh. Why?
- 18:30Because we just learned his humility.
- 18:35He already knew that he wasn't deserving to be the king,
- 18:38son-in-law. It's very difficult to offend a
- 18:41humble person. Humility is a great shield from
- 18:45many offenses. But when you think you are,
- 18:48deserving of certain things and things don't come your way.
- 18:52You open yourself up to a fence and if it's not taken care of
- 18:56your open yourself up to bitterness frustration.
- 18:58Jealousy, Envy, all these ugly things, but David was solo
- 19:02already. David's face was already on the
- 19:04ground. So when saw try to kick him,
- 19:07he's like, where are you going to kick me?
- 19:08I'm already. I'm already down.
- 19:11And so humility. Here is David Shield it
- 19:14protected him from so much. He did not see himself worthy to
- 19:18begin with. So when it was not given to him.
- 19:20He was not offended. Can I ask you something?
- 19:26Have you ever offended a dead person?
- 19:31Have you ever went to the graveyard and asked those corpse
- 19:35six feet under? Hey I have you had anybody
- 19:37offend you this past week. Very difficult to frustrate a
- 19:41person who's dead. Die to yourself.
- 19:46It'll be very difficult for people to get under your skin.
- 19:51I read something that made me smile and it was a joke, I
- 19:55guess, but I think it's true. And somebody said, you know,
- 19:58it's very difficult for what people say to me to offend me,
- 20:02because I sing worse. Things about myself, Sunday
- 20:05morning. I'm a wretch and I'm a sinner
- 20:09and I'm in darkness and I'm in blind.
- 20:12All these wonderful things. So what are you going to say?
- 20:15That's going to offend? David's humility protected him.
- 20:20From the tactics and the scheme, see what Saul did to David would
- 20:24have worked on Saul. Because Saul was in the flesh.
- 20:29But how do you take down a man? Filled with the spirit?
- 20:33It's very, very difficult and Satan has great difficulty.
- 20:36And so saw in these to come up with new ideas.
- 20:40So verse 20, Now, Saul's daughter, Michal Love David.
- 20:45And they told Saul and the thing, pleased him.
- 20:49Oh my God. Loves David now.
- 20:52Oh, wonderful and it's not because there's the potential of
- 20:56his daughter. Marrying.
- 20:57A Godly, Man. It's because he has fresh bait
- 21:00to work with. Saw thought in verse 21.
- 21:05Let me give her to him that she may be a snare for him and that
- 21:10the hand of the Philistines. Maybe against him there, for
- 21:13Saul said to David a second time.
- 21:15You shall now be my son-in-law and saw commanded his servants
- 21:20speak to David and private and say behold the King has Delight
- 21:24in you really? The King has Delight in you.
- 21:27Oh, yeah, and all his servants love you.
- 21:31Now then become the king's son-in-law, and saw a servant
- 21:35spoke. Those words in the ears of
- 21:37David. So I was like this whole thing,
- 21:38like, hey, David come and they put them in a separate room
- 21:40table. Did you hear how he feels about
- 21:42you? It's like nobody talked about.
- 21:44She's in love with you, man. She's talking about you.
- 21:46She even went to her dad about you and Saul loves it.
- 21:49He wants you to marry her. He wants you to be his
- 21:53son-in-law. David said there's a seem to you
- 21:57a little thing to become the king's son-in-law since I am a
- 21:59poor man, and I have no reputation.
- 22:03And the Servants of Saul told him thus.
- 22:05And so did David speak. This went perfectly as Saul
- 22:11would have planned it. He knew that David was a man.
- 22:15That was humble. He knew that he was a man that
- 22:17would not just receive this gift, but that he would work for
- 22:21it that he would prove himself for it, but he was a poor man.
- 22:24He didn't have money to give you that.
- 22:25Have a great Dowry to offer so he would do what he did before.
- 22:28He would be surely willing to go to battle again.
- 22:33And so sauce ready to give him a new mission.
- 22:36That would be even more dangerous for David.
- 22:40You know, what's so amazing. Is the words that saw has
- 22:44concerning his daughter? Look at verse 21 against off.
- 22:47I let me give her to him. That she may be a snare for him.
- 22:54Now, some would limit that to the fact that she would be the
- 22:58Trap that would set David up to be an object of an arrow, or
- 23:03sort of some sort in battle. I think it's deeper than that.
- 23:08I think Saul knew something about the character of his
- 23:13daughter, meow. I think he knew something about
- 23:18her attitude. Something about her spirituality
- 23:21even. And so yes, the grander purpose
- 23:26would be to have him killed. But if he if he overcame that
- 23:31like he did last time now he would be trapped in marriage to
- 23:35me, Kyle. It's kind of hard to believe,
- 23:40right? Not really.
- 23:44Does this prove to be true later on in David story?
- 23:48Think now? Think now of a very famous story
- 23:52in David's life and a response from Michal.
- 23:56That wasn't very favorable on her.
- 23:59Do you remember, do you remember when David restored the ark back
- 24:04to Jerusalem? And as David was dancing and
- 24:08worshiping before the Lord. Somebody was looking out of the
- 24:12window. Let me read it to you and second
- 24:16Samuel 6 verse 16. This is farther down the road
- 24:19with David story, but I want you to see me House response to
- 24:23David's worship. As the Ark of the Lord came into
- 24:28the city of David, me how the daughter of Saul looked out of
- 24:33the window and saw King, David, leaping and dancing before the
- 24:37Lord hears a response and she despised him in her heart.
- 24:44She criticized him. He comes home and she wants to
- 24:48start a fight. Because he helped himself to
- 24:53just an average worshiper. He stripped himself of his Royal
- 24:56robes and he just became an average-looking Israelite
- 24:59dancing before the presence of God because he has restored the
- 25:02presence of God to its rightful place.
- 25:04And out of all the people who complain in the midst of all
- 25:07this celebration was the wife. The wife complaining about, what
- 25:14about his worship? About his Devotion to the Lord
- 25:18about his Zeal about his passion.
- 25:22Makes me wonder, listen carefully.
- 25:25It makes me wonder. Why me?
- 25:29How love David to begin with? Why didn't he have loved David?
- 25:36We read earlier. That's all of David.
- 25:38That didn't prove to be genuine love.
- 25:40Why did mija I love David. Well, think about who David was
- 25:46honestly, I'm just asking just being transparent.
- 25:48This isn't dogmatic with me. How love David if he was still a
- 25:50shepherd. Or is it because everybody's
- 25:54singing David's name, or is it because he was a good-looking
- 25:58ready, Country? Boy.
- 25:59What was it? That attracted me?
- 26:00How the David was that his popularity was it?
- 26:02Because he had a standing presence, was it?
- 26:04Because he was known, who knows? But I can tell you this, for
- 26:06certain when it came to David spirituality.
- 26:09She was offended by it, instead of attracted to it.
- 26:17We're going to get to this later on about how the wrong person in
- 26:20your life, can actually be a trap instead of a blessing.
- 26:25But we scroll down. Because we still have to get to
- 26:2919. Hope you don't have to go
- 26:30anywhere tonight. Saul Saul, Saul finds his
- 26:37daughter in love with this man. Know something about me.
- 26:40Ha. So it's like a win-win.
- 26:41If David dies in battle. That's the best ideal.
- 26:44If they even wins in battle. He stuck with Michal and she's
- 26:49gonna be a snare to him. Like, this is diabolical.
- 26:54So, the instruction is go out and I don't want to bride-price,
- 26:58but I want 200 foreskins of the Philistines.
- 27:02I want you to go out and kill these men and I want you to
- 27:04essentially circumcise him, here is solid, gehen trying to be all
- 27:08spiritual and try to take God's sign of the Covenant and
- 27:13circumcision and apply it to the scene.
- 27:15So, David, who's a man after God's Own Heart would be like,
- 27:17yeah, this man is really he's really after the things of God.
- 27:22David succeeds. Not only does he succeed.
- 27:24He he goes above and beyond the expectation.
- 27:28He comes back gives them 200 instead of 100.
- 27:33Saul gives his daughter Michal for a wife.
- 27:37Look at verse 28, but when saw saw and knew that the Lord was
- 27:40with David and that Michal Saul's daughter, loved them saw
- 27:43was even more afraid of David. So saw was David's enemy
- 27:48continually. Now, look at this and the
- 27:51commanders of the Philistines came out to battle and as often
- 27:54as they came out, David had more success than all the Servants of
- 27:58Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.
- 28:04Everything that saw planned, literally backfired on him.
- 28:10He tried to get him killed. It didn't work.
- 28:13He tried to even make him look unpopular by trying to get
- 28:16jealousy out of him and envy. Try to get him to retaliate,
- 28:18make a scene so that it can go on the tabloids and Israel
- 28:21didn't work. In fact, the opposite happened,
- 28:25when he tried to tarnish his name and eradicate, his name,
- 28:28God, exalted his name, and it became highly esteemed.
- 28:34Why Saul? My friend?
- 28:36You're not fighting against a man.
- 28:38You're fighting against God's man.
- 28:41You're fighting against God. And not only a man, you're
- 28:46fighting. It's a humble man, a man who
- 28:49knows that he is no reputation that he is low.
- 28:51You're fighting at such a person.
- 28:53What does the scripture say that?
- 28:54He brings down the proud and he exalts the humble.
- 28:59So, while you are trying to bring down a man, God is
- 29:01bringing him up. Who do you thinks gonna win?
- 29:07And it's a picture of Jesus Christ who humbled himself.
- 29:12Even to the point of death death on a cross.
- 29:16And God has highly exalted him and made his name, the name
- 29:20above. Every other name, that at the
- 29:22name of Jesus Christ. Every knee should bow in heaven
- 29:25and on Earth, and under the Earth.
- 29:27And so he received David though. He was lowly though.
- 29:31He was the object of scorn and hatred and envy like the son of
- 29:38David was exalted. And made to be highly esteemed.
- 29:46Chapter 19. Stretch it out.
- 29:52After David's growing success, you know, else was growing this
- 29:57hatred for him. This jealousy now is getting up
- 30:01out of control. It's it can't be constraint.
- 30:04It can't be concealed. It's now bubbling over.
- 30:07It is going to get very ugly because we read just two verses
- 30:12ago. That David became Saul's enemy
- 30:15continually. That's how scary jealousy is.
- 30:21It's amazing how much the Bible gives attention to this.
- 30:24A whole story line about jealousy, makes you wonder This
- 30:30jealousy was so powerful when it was harbored and saws hard that
- 30:34it was able to make listen to this.
- 30:36A man of God, anointed of the Holy Spirit, humble and
- 30:40successful, and Incredibly gifted to be an enemy in
- 30:44someone's eyes. To be an enemy in.
- 30:48Someone's eyes, instead of a partner, instead of a friend,
- 30:52instead of a colabor and the gospel know you are standing in
- 30:56my way. I will treat you as I would
- 30:58treat my enemy. But more than that this jealousy
- 31:04got. So out of control that it's not
- 31:06subtle anymore. Sea salt try to do it secretly
- 31:09for so long. He had the spear in his hand and
- 31:13he throws it at David while he's under this influence of a
- 31:16tormenting spirit. So people can say he's mad, it's
- 31:19the spirit so he can give that excuse.
- 31:22He tried to put him an enemy line in front of Enemy Lines, to
- 31:24try to get rid of him. So that if people see David
- 31:26dead, they can't Point The Saul. He's trying to do all these
- 31:30things secretly and now all for a sudden.
- 31:35It's about to become very public.
- 31:38Saul's murderous mindset is not secret of any more.
- 31:41It's becoming more obvious to those who are closest to him and
- 31:45listen to this. It's like a flesh-eating
- 31:48disease. Leave it, untreated long enough
- 31:51and it begins to develop an odor.
- 31:55And that's how the sins of the spirit work.
- 31:57The things that make the sins of the spirit, those hidden
- 32:00attitude. So dangerous.
- 32:01Is that at first, they're not recognizable.
- 32:04They're not recognizable. They're hidden Pride.
- 32:07It stays hidden for it. Starts with a seed form, an
- 32:09embryo anger, jealousy and envy, especially but leave that thing,
- 32:16untreated, just like cancer and eventually it's going to become
- 32:19noticeable. And those are going to those
- 32:22people around, you are closest to you, will be able to
- 32:24recognize it smell it, and see it, because you did not take the
- 32:28time to come before the great physician of your soul to deal
- 32:31with it. And this is what's about to
- 32:36happen to him as we read in verse 1, Saul spoke to Jonathan
- 32:39his son and to all his servants that they should kill David.
- 32:45Now he's talking about it. Now, he's on lunch break with
- 32:50his employees in his own son. And he's like, giving them
- 32:53reasons to actually kill David. Now.
- 32:56He's not looking for the enemy to do now.
- 32:57He's looking for those who work with David to do it.
- 33:02Because that's what jealousy does.
- 33:03Listen, very carefully. This is what jealousy does
- 33:06jealousy. When it is not restrained by the
- 33:08power of the Holy Spirit. When is not destroyed by God's
- 33:10grace, not only overtakes, you it convinces you that you need
- 33:15to convince others to join you on the quest of being jealous
- 33:18for that person. What jealousy does to a person
- 33:22is that it eventually makes other people or attempts to make
- 33:26other people turn on you. And so that you can have others,
- 33:32join you on that quest of overcoming, that person that you
- 33:35want to overcome. So Javis people start
- 33:38bad-mouthing other people, especially the object of their
- 33:41jealousy and they talk to their closest friends, usually or
- 33:44their relatives. They start saying things about
- 33:46them and smearing their character and talking about
- 33:50talking about the way they walk into church.
- 33:53And maybe the way they do this and do that and and then they
- 33:57add usually to it. I'm a Discerning person.
- 33:59So I usually can tell All these different crazy things, right?
- 34:03And what they're trying to do is they're trying to win other
- 34:05people to hate them. So that they don't feel as
- 34:10guilty to hate them. So they can have a better chance
- 34:15of doing, what Satan would love to do and that's destroying
- 34:19innocent believer. This is really serious.
- 34:23And here's the thing, Jonathan responds in a way that might
- 34:27have shocked saw but Jonathan saw son, delighted much in David
- 34:32and Jonathan told David saw, my father seeks to kill you.
- 34:36Therefore be on your guard in the morning.
- 34:38Stay in a secret place and hide yourself.
- 34:42And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field
- 34:45where you are and I will speak to my father about you.
- 34:47And if I learn anything, I will tell you.
- 34:52Jonathan made a covenant with David.
- 34:57Jonathan loved David. And love warns.
- 35:05Love warns. And what's incredible about?
- 35:10Jonathan, we'll get to him in a minute.
- 35:12He stands in Greek contrast with the servants.
- 35:15The servants heard the same news that Jonathan heard and they
- 35:19knew David just as well Jonathan did.
- 35:22But here's the thing, when the servants heard.
- 35:24There was no record of them informing David of the potential
- 35:28looming threat that would come from Saul.
- 35:32Do you know why for the same reason?
- 35:34Why many Christians today don't stand for truth because they're
- 35:37afraid for their own life. They're afraid of their own
- 35:41positions and their own jobs. And so, you know what they did
- 35:45again? What many Christians do?
- 35:47They took a neutral position? That's how you feel about David.
- 35:52Okay. I'm not getting involved in
- 35:54this. But Jonathan was willing to
- 35:59stand up to his own. Dad.
- 36:01Do you know why, not? Because Jonathan loved David
- 36:04more than he loves Saul. It's because Jonathan love
- 36:07truth. That's why.
- 36:12Many people today claiming that they love truth.
- 36:17Can I tell you how your love for truth will be tested?
- 36:21When you have to make a stance that will cost you relationships
- 36:24or position. And God will put you to the test
- 36:28and he's very creative and trying to see where you stand
- 36:32because we think it just about if Isis comes into our
- 36:34neighborhood and puts us on our knees, as I'll cut your head off
- 36:36If you deny Christ, no, no. Truth is much broader than just
- 36:43gospel reality. Truth is truth across the board.
- 36:48See, we limit that. That wonderful blessing from,
- 36:51Jesus blessed. Are you?
- 36:53When you are persecuted for righteousness sake, you know how
- 36:55we replace? It blessed.
- 36:57Are you, when people persecute you for the gospels sake, he
- 36:59didn't say that. He said for righteousness sake,
- 37:03So whatever is under the category of righteous, you are
- 37:06blessed if you are persecuted because of that.
- 37:10So we think that if we stand for being the church and gathering
- 37:17together in this age, which says don't gather and we are slanted
- 37:21for that. That's not persecution.
- 37:23Why not? It's righteous.
- 37:26God. Commanded that we do it.
- 37:29So blessed. Are you when you are persecuted
- 37:32for righteousness sake, And so David.
- 37:38Is seeing the true love of a friend.
- 37:41But Jonathan is showing not just a love for a friend, a love for
- 37:45what is right. If I can speak to you, as I
- 37:48would speak to a brother. A family member, somebody dear
- 37:54and close to me. I hope what I'm about to say,
- 37:57will never ever leave your mind, and that you will remember, and
- 38:01it will echo down the corridors of your conscience for the rest
- 38:04of your existence. Stand for truth, no matter what
- 38:09it cost you. Stand for what is right, no
- 38:17matter the price. Even if it's your own family.
- 38:26Jonathan. Is willing to stand for truth.
- 38:31Even at the expense of fracturing, the relationship he
- 38:34had with his dad, you want proof that he actually damage the
- 38:37relationship with his father for the sake of Truth.
- 38:40Go to chapter 20 and look at verse 33.
- 38:50Then Jonathan answered Saul his father.
- 38:53Why should he be put to death? What has he done?
- 38:55But Saul hurled? His spear at him to strike him.
- 38:59You imagine that. So Jonathan knew that his father
- 39:03was determined to put David to death.
- 39:06In fact, if you scroll back, look at verse 30, then saws
- 39:11anger was kindled against Jonathan and he sent them.
- 39:13You son of a perverse rebellious woman.
- 39:17Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your
- 39:20own chain and to the shame of your mother's nakedness.
- 39:27Saul knew that he was, his son was willing to stand with David,
- 39:31even at the expense of the father-son relationship.
- 39:34And it's not because he loved David's presence more than his
- 39:39father's. It was because of Truth.
- 39:44Stand for what is right, no matter what it cost you because
- 39:51there is a far greater price for standing.
- 39:53What is wrong, no matter what relationships or positions, you
- 39:56keep with it. And if you're not convinced that
- 40:05Jonathan is standing for truth, just scroll down here.
- 40:09And look at verse 4. Of chapter 19.
- 40:14And Jonathan spoke. Well of David to Saul his father
- 40:17and said to him. Let not the king sin against his
- 40:20servant David because he has not sinned against you, and because
- 40:24his deeds have brought good to you.
- 40:27For, he took his life in his hand and he's struck down the
- 40:29Philistine of the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel.
- 40:32You saw it, a great salvation for officers.
- 40:35Are you saw and rejoice? Why then will you sin against
- 40:39innocent Blood by killing David without cause?
- 40:44He's using language from the law.
- 40:47He's reminding his own. Dad of the scriptures.
- 40:51Jonathan is not just courageous because he went to David.
- 40:53He says, hey look, the guy is trying to kill you.
- 40:55I've heard it with my own ears and I'm willing to put my own
- 40:59life at risk to warn you because I know you're innocent.
- 41:02I know God has called you and anointed you.
- 41:04His courage was seen the fact that he tried to preach the sin
- 41:08out of his dad's heart. He stood up to his own dad in
- 41:13kindness and wisdom. Yes and boldness but also in a
- 41:17spirit of humility. He reminds him of the acts of
- 41:20David. He reminds him of the situation.
- 41:22This is not it's not worthy for him to be killed.
- 41:24You're going to, you're going to put more guilt on yourself that.
- 41:29So, he stands up to his father. And this is admire herbal,
- 41:34especially on a day like today. And what's amazing here is
- 41:39Saul's answer in verse 6. We read here and saw listen to
- 41:45the voice of Jonathan. Sauce War.
- 41:49As the Lord lives. He shall not be put to death.
- 41:53Wow. Now.
- 41:54We that check this out 47 and Jonathan called David, Jonathan
- 41:58calls David and Jonathan reported him.
- 42:01All these things and Jonathan brought David to Saul and he was
- 42:05in his presence as before. Don't you wish the book ended
- 42:09there? Seemed like it worked.
- 42:16How wonderful. Jonathan is convicting message
- 42:23actually got ahold of salt. And not only that sauce, swear
- 42:27by the lord's name. It seems like in a genuine way,
- 42:31but we have David being restored to his original position where
- 42:34he was in close proximity with salt.
- 42:36This is MM, is reconciliation. This is a wonderful restoration.
- 42:40Jonathan was used by God to save David saw, and all the Kingdom
- 42:45of Israel for much unnecessary. Chaos.
- 42:50Don't get too excited. Because I read that and part of
- 42:54me, you know, let the little bit.
- 42:56Yeah, look at this, but then I reexamine the words.
- 43:03Does that sound like true repentance?
- 43:07Saul Suarez? The Lord lives.
- 43:08He shall not be put to death. I don't know.
- 43:13I don't see any indication of conviction of his jealousy.
- 43:18Of his hatred. I don't see any crying out to
- 43:23God for his. His rebellious acts and his
- 43:27inconsistencies and is broken. Vows.
- 43:29I just see a person that agrees not to kill somebody else.
- 43:37Whatever joy, we knew about Saul's very short-lived.
- 43:42Because even though he comes back into the presence of Saul,
- 43:47a different presence is going to overtake Saul.
- 43:51Do you know why? Because saws repentance dealt
- 43:56with this symptom of sin and not the root of sin.
- 44:00The symptom was I want to kill David.
- 44:03The route was you're jealous. And how Saul is treating his sin
- 44:09as how many people in the church are treating their sin.
- 44:11And how many people are counseling?
- 44:13People regarding their sin. They want to put to rest the
- 44:17symptoms and they don't want to do heart surgery by the word of
- 44:21God. You see what I'm saying?
- 44:25Saul's issue was not necessarily that he wanted to kill David.
- 44:28That was the branch. That was the fruit of something
- 44:31much deeper and more significant.
- 44:35And unless we get to the heart of the matter, no pun intended.
- 44:40Likes. All many people who profess
- 44:42Christ will live their Christian journey and the cycle of repent
- 44:48cry. Go back to it, repent cry.
- 44:51And when I mean repair my meeting real repentance, false
- 44:54repentance like this. Many people just apologized for
- 44:59their Outburst. They apologized for their
- 45:03swimming and lust for a season. And they just want the pastor to
- 45:09put their hand around their back and say it's okay.
- 45:11Just don't do it again. Why don't we do some heart
- 45:14surgery? Get on the table, and let God do
- 45:18some work. Why don't you do something like
- 45:20Fast a little bit? If you really want to get that
- 45:22cancer out of you. And let God go, deep.
- 45:26Be honest with yourself. Be honest before God, and let
- 45:29him bring victory in your life. Saul doesn't come before God saw
- 45:34just promises his son that he won't stick his spear in the
- 45:37face of David. Doesn't prove much because
- 45:41Saul's vow doesn't hold. Wait.
- 45:44Why? Because again, you're dealing
- 45:45with the symptom. You're not dealing with the real
- 45:48issue here. And so all it's going to take is
- 45:50a little bit of time and the right Temptation for you to go
- 45:53right back into and that's exactly what happens.
- 45:55Because look what happens in verse 8 and there was war again.
- 45:58It's all is calm, all is bright. Nothing.
- 46:01Nothing strange is happening. No eruptions.
- 46:03No plans. No schemes and Davis is doing
- 46:06what he's called to do. Be Soldier, be General.
- 46:09So War breaks out and David went and fought with the Philistines
- 46:13and struck them with a great blow.
- 46:15So that they fled, before my another awesome campaign
- 46:18completed by the anointed, man of God.
- 46:20And guess what? This is going to trigger Saul.
- 46:22Look at the next verse, then a harmful Spirit from the Lord
- 46:26Came Upon Saul when when did it happen?
- 46:31When did it happen after the victory?
- 46:34After people start talking about David again, after the news came
- 46:37to town that the Philistines were defeated once more and push
- 46:39back that much further. Saw, here's this thing and
- 46:42because of that, he didn't deal with the heart issue.
- 46:46He didn't get real with God. It flared up again.
- 46:51So what happens? Harmful, Spirit comes upon him?
- 46:56And the reason why the harmful Spirit was there, because he did
- 46:58not cry out like David and take, not your Holy Spirit from me.
- 47:02There's no language that. There's no proof of that.
- 47:07We see here, then a harmful Spirit from the Lord Came Upon
- 47:09saw as he sat in his house, with his spear in it.
- 47:12So he's ready already. Like, it's right there in his
- 47:15hand. And he's looking at David.
- 47:17He's already inflamed by Envy by what he just heard about.
- 47:21David, David's their humbly serving as a therapist and
- 47:24playing that beautiful harp. It's all sought to pin David to
- 47:29the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul so that he struck
- 47:33the spear into the wall and David fled, and escaped that
- 47:37night. What's the difference?
- 47:41What's the difference between David's reaction here than the
- 47:44first time? Anybody notice the difference?
- 47:52He fled. Last time we heard that he
- 47:56evaded Saul twice. So Saul did it once David.
- 48:01Leaves the room. Let some calm down for a little
- 48:03bit, his servants common and put them to rest of the spiritist
- 48:06tormenting all and solves their probably foaming at the mouth
- 48:10calms down. David comes back in place again,
- 48:1210 minutes in and throws a spear.
- 48:14Again. He evades him this time.
- 48:18He leaves the premises permanently.
- 48:22This time, he said, and we will never see David in this position
- 48:26for the next few years. Is that is that right?
- 48:31Or is that wrong? Is that righteous or is that
- 48:34cowardly? What do you think?
- 48:37It's righteous. Because God calls us to be wise.
- 48:45And we would say it's probably very smart not to work for
- 48:49somebody that wants to try to kill you.
- 48:53But the murder was the symptom that attempt to kill him was a
- 48:56symptom, the real issue was jealousy and here's the point
- 49:00jealousy. As much as Jonathan, try to
- 49:04reconcile the to the scriptures and form us about the difficulty
- 49:09to remain in the presence of someone who has Envy towards
- 49:13you. That's why I believe it's one of
- 49:16the most vicious. And heinous sins of the spirit.
- 49:24Proverbs 27 for says wrath. Now, listen to this.
- 49:28I want you to listen to these words.
- 49:29This is astounding, wrath is cruel.
- 49:34Anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?
- 49:42Think about that. Do you know a person who has no
- 49:44control over their temper? Have you ever been in the
- 49:47presence of someone that all it takes is one little thing and
- 49:50they blow up and veins, come with their neck and they throw
- 49:52things across the room. It's not very fun to be in their
- 49:55presence. Scripture even says, if you're
- 49:59married to someone like, that's better to live in the desert.
- 50:03But this proverb tells me that there is something more severe
- 50:06than that. And that's a person who's
- 50:08jealous of you, any idea. Why.
- 50:15Any idea? Why?
- 50:22Why? In a person with jealousy, just
- 50:27they have something in their heart and they kind of stare at
- 50:29you to certain way. They might be.
- 50:30Many me talk about you Gibran. It's hidden and that's one
- 50:37element it secretive. It can be easily detected.
- 50:41It can be covered by different things and false humility short.
- 50:44Yes. Okay, so anger and wrath are
- 50:53more explosive firework moments where as jealousy has longevity
- 50:56to. As we see in Saul's life,
- 50:59anything else. Let me ask you something.
- 51:02Even though somebody might not have the right.
- 51:05We never have the right to be explosive in our anger, to be
- 51:09filled with rage. Usually there is something that
- 51:12is done to create that do right? Unless somebody's just totally
- 51:16out of and they just get angry for no reason but usually it's
- 51:18something do. Divide that causes that
- 51:21explosion to occur, correct? But what about jealousy?
- 51:29What does somebody have to do wrong to make somebody jealous?
- 51:42That's it? Jealousy deals with a failure to
- 51:47be complete in your identity with Christ.
- 51:51So, here's the thing, when I look at a verse like this, I
- 51:53think about Dave and I go. What did David do to make to
- 51:56makes all feel that way about him?
- 51:58And the answer is nothing. David was just fulfilling the
- 52:02will of God for his life. David displayed humility and
- 52:06loyalty and consistency and yet still he was the object of
- 52:10someone's hatred. So here's why.
- 52:14Here's why, who can stand before.
- 52:16Jealousy is a scary thing because you did nothing to cause
- 52:20it. So you can't necessarily do
- 52:21anything to relieve it. What am I going to do for you?
- 52:25Not to be jealous, kill myself. Oh, quit the ministry.
- 52:30Oh, okay, not look beautiful. So that you feel better about
- 52:34yourself. You see what I'm saying?
- 52:36Oh, I'll demote myself so I don't make as much just because
- 52:40you see how you see, how this doesn't make sense you, if it's
- 52:43not reconcilable, unless the holy spirit, that something in
- 52:46that person. So what David is showing here is
- 52:50I can't work with this. Like if you are a person who is
- 52:54angry or filled with rage then maybe I can I can change the way
- 52:58I do things around you that triggers that maybe there's
- 53:01something. I do that you don't do.
- 53:03And so maybe we just need to me. I died here so we can calm
- 53:06things down. No.
- 53:07No, I'm doing the will of God. So what can I do to please?
- 53:11You, I can't. I can't.
- 53:14And so he flees his presence and he is very wise in doing.
- 53:18So let me tell you, if you're a person is struggling with Josie.
- 53:21God can heal you God can restore you.
- 53:23God can make you complete. God can give you a revelation of
- 53:26your identity in Christ. That will make you feel whole.
- 53:31But if not, if likes all you ignore it and you justify it.
- 53:35I assure you. One of the consequences of among
- 53:37many that you will push people away from you.
- 53:41And things that could have been wonderful Godly Partnerships and
- 53:44friendships will, instead be you looking at innocent people as
- 53:48enemies. Don't let yourself be consumed
- 53:51by it. Give it to Christ.
- 53:54David runs you guys doing well, can we continue?
- 54:00Verse 11, Saul sent Messengers to David's house to watch him,
- 54:04that he might kill him in the morning, but me, how David's
- 54:07wife told him. If you do not escape with your
- 54:09life, tonight tomorrow, you will be killed.
- 54:13So me how let David down through the window and he fled away and
- 54:16escaped. Now.
- 54:17This is so good. I don't know.
- 54:19I wish I didn't even stop. I'm just going to read the next
- 54:21few verses because it's worthy of not being interrupted.
- 54:25Just listen to us and let the imagery play in your mind.
- 54:28So let me retract saw sent Messengers verse 11 to David's
- 54:31house to watch him that he might kill him in the morning, but me,
- 54:34how David's wife told him. If you do not escape with your
- 54:37life tonight tomorrow, you'll be killed so many holiday vadh down
- 54:41through the window and he fled And escaped Miguel took an
- 54:44image, which is actually a household God and laid it on the
- 54:48bed and put a pillow of goats hair at his head and covered it
- 54:52with the clothes. So when Saul sent Messengers to
- 54:55take David, she said he is sick. Then saw send the messengers to
- 55:00see David saying, bring him up to me in the bed that I may kill
- 55:04him. And when the messengers came in
- 55:08behold, the image was in the bed with the pillow of goats here at
- 55:11its head. Saul said to me Kyle, why have
- 55:14you deceived me, thus, and let my enemy go so that he has
- 55:18escaped. Let me call answers Saul.
- 55:20He said to me, let me go. Why should I kill you?
- 55:25If you have the money, make a movie out of this, please, this
- 55:29is like so exciting. How can you be bored with the
- 55:31scriptures? I mean, detects itself is
- 55:35riveting when you have the Holy Spirit, ready to give you
- 55:37Revelation. Oh.
- 55:40There's many things that can be said about these verses, but I
- 55:44will bring one inside that. I sure, I hope will surely bless
- 55:47you. This scene that we just
- 55:49described actually inspired David to write an entire Psalm
- 55:53about it. Does anybody know the song
- 55:56number? Mmm.
- 56:01Go to the Book of Psalms. And this is why we must read all
- 56:08of the Bible because it sheds light on different portions of
- 56:11the Bible. 59. If you are willing go home
- 56:21tomorrow tonight, whenever you desire and read Psalm 59 in
- 56:25light of tonight's Bible study, but look at verse 12, the
- 56:28choirmaster according to do not destroy a micced, MM of David
- 56:34when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.
- 56:43So what we just read in 1st Samuel, this is David by the
- 56:47spirit, writing an entire song to describe his perspective on
- 56:53it. Aren't the scriptures.
- 56:55Wonderful. And I wish we can read all of
- 56:58it. But let's look at a few things.
- 57:00Look at verse 34, behold. They lie and wait for my life,
- 57:05Fierce men stir up Strife against me for no transgression
- 57:09or sin of mine. O, Lord, for no fault of mine.
- 57:13They run and make ready. You want to serve God, be ready
- 57:19to be attacked by those in your own camp.
- 57:23He's not speaking about the Philistines.
- 57:26He's speaking about those that he served with.
- 57:29He's speaking about the servants that he probably even went to
- 57:31war with that, they probably laughed together with that.
- 57:34They probably made memories within the palace.
- 57:36These men now are surrounding his Dwelling Place for no sin
- 57:41for no transgression. Just because they don't have the
- 57:45discernment and they don't have the spirit of God in them to
- 57:48see, like Jonathan saw, this is not right.
- 57:51In fact, look at verse 12 for the sin of their mouths, the
- 57:55words of their lips. Let them be wrapped in their
- 57:58pride for the cursing and what's that word and lies that they
- 58:03utter. How else would Saul convince a
- 58:08bunch of people to kill David. He didn't just say go kill him
- 58:10necessarily surely. There was something that he said
- 58:13to them, to convince them to kill him.
- 58:16And we're going to read that later on.
- 58:17Even David complains later. They slander me.
- 58:21If you actually look at the woes in the Book of Psalms, many of
- 58:25them have to do with slander than anything else study, it,
- 58:29most of David's laments have to do with what people said to him
- 58:33and about him more than the spears that they were ready to
- 58:36throw at him. So David here, as a man was
- 58:40innocent is experiencing attack and even lies said about him and
- 58:44what did David do? Serve, God, serve God and watch
- 58:51the potential of the enemy to try to come against you.
- 58:53But look at verse 70, I love how this song ends.
- 58:56Oh, my strength. I will sing praises to you for
- 59:01you. Oh, God are my Fortress.
- 59:03The God Who shows me steadfast love.
- 59:07I'm innocent. I don't deserve this.
- 59:10You know, what's amazing about that Psalm.
- 59:13He does this in other places, but he doesn't do it here.
- 59:15He didn't say, this is unfair. God is this what it is?
- 59:18This what comes with a package to serving you?
- 59:20I'm reconsidering, this whole anointing thing and this whole
- 59:24being a king thing. No, he says, I trust you.
- 59:28I'll sing to you in the midst of all of this.
- 59:30I'll praise you because you are my Fortress.
- 59:33Saul is not my Fortress. The armies of Israel are not my
- 59:37shield. You are.
- 59:41So we come back to the story as we were ready to close.
- 59:45Psalm 59 was written in light of this, but look at some of the
- 59:48hints here. Look at me, call me Hal rescues
- 59:50David Wright. This is God's Providence, guys.
- 59:53Look at this saw. Thought he can be secretive soft
- 59:57that he can go to his own family and try to make a plan against
- 1:00:00David and God's Providence is at work.
- 1:00:02So, Jonathan warns David initially later on me.
- 1:00:07Kyle tells David, she finds out somehow.
- 1:00:10What's the point here? Sin has a way of getting out the
- 1:00:15plots of Satan, have a way of getting out and God always
- 1:00:19prepares us, whether it's in the moment, or after the fact always
- 1:00:22prepares us to remain unshakable, and I moved.
- 1:00:27Macaulay is fulfilling. What Genesis 2 says that a man
- 1:00:30shall leave. His father and his mother and
- 1:00:33shall cleave unto his wife. You know what people do?
- 1:00:38They equate that merely to physical location.
- 1:00:42That a man or a woman, they leave their family.
- 1:00:45So when you get married, you're supposed to leave the home, he's
- 1:00:48supposedly the supervision of your parents.
- 1:00:50And now you become a new family unit by the spirit of God and by
- 1:00:54Covenant. So we look at that verse and
- 1:00:56Stewie go. Yes, I left my house and many
- 1:01:00people haven't moved emotionally.
- 1:01:04So, their allegiance to their parents is more Superior than
- 1:01:07their spouse. Their emotions are dedicated to
- 1:01:11their parents more than their spouse, and that's how you
- 1:01:14create havoc in the home. When the Bible says leave father
- 1:01:18and mother, it's every type of leaving, not just physical
- 1:01:22location. You are turning your Allegiance.
- 1:01:25You are turning your dedication to that person, even over your
- 1:01:30parents. You may not value that.
- 1:01:34Now you will in the future. Some know what I'm talking
- 1:01:41about. So we admire me call for this.
- 1:01:46But again, it's very short-lived because she does something David
- 1:01:49escapes through the window. She takes an idol.
- 1:01:54Puts it in the bed, puts goats hair on it.
- 1:01:56Puts a blanket over. Here's my question.
- 1:01:58What's an idol doing in your home?
- 1:02:04Huh? Where'd you get that?
- 1:02:06I can tell you this? I have a hunch that it wasn't
- 1:02:09David's just saying. I have a lot of confidence that
- 1:02:14it wasn't David's household, God.
- 1:02:19Amber what's all said earlier? Michal is in love with David.
- 1:02:24She will be a snare to him. Saw knew something about his
- 1:02:29daughter. I'm convinced, he knew something
- 1:02:31about his daughter, and one thing that he must have known is
- 1:02:33that she worshipped household gods?
- 1:02:38And we see later on that, when David worships.
- 1:02:40She's offended by it. You want to know how you can set
- 1:02:45yourself up for trap and marriage?
- 1:02:47Marry, somebody who is not spiritually compatible with you.
- 1:02:53Marry somebody? Who doesn't have God as their
- 1:02:58sole treasure and life? There's Supreme Delight.
- 1:03:03The lordship of Jesus Christ is not real over them.
- 1:03:06Do they go to church? Oh, they lift their hands.
- 1:03:09Sometimes. And here's what we think.
- 1:03:13Here's a warning for us. Okay, we think like me how this
- 1:03:17can work. Yeah, he's a man after God's Own
- 1:03:19Heart. He's good-looking.
- 1:03:22She's pretty, she's gorgeous. I can win her.
- 1:03:26Listen. Don't marry.
- 1:03:28Somebody's potential. Please don't do that.
- 1:03:33Don't marry what somebody could be?
- 1:03:37Because here's the thing, me, house idolatry and and David's
- 1:03:42obvious Soul dedication to God. You didn't see issues at first.
- 1:03:47In fact, things look good here. Like me house working with
- 1:03:51David. He's escaping.
- 1:03:53She's there. She seems like she's fulfilling
- 1:03:55parts of the Bible. Like in relationships today that
- 1:04:00spiritual unequally yoked - if that's even a word usually
- 1:04:04surfaces up later, down the road.
- 1:04:07And so you hear crazy things. I mean, this is the fullest
- 1:04:09extent where you I've said this before where you have like
- 1:04:12Christian young ladies willing to marry Muslims.
- 1:04:16I've seen it, I've talked to people and when they they try to
- 1:04:20convince they say well they say that I'm willing they're willing
- 1:04:24to let me practice my faith. Oh, really?
- 1:04:28That's all it takes for you to be convinced.
- 1:04:32Well, he says, he's not, he's not that into it.
- 1:04:34He says, he'll respect my beliefs and I can go to church
- 1:04:37and he can do his thing. Wonderful.
- 1:04:39Great. Yeah.
- 1:04:40So what about when kids come on the scene?
- 1:04:42Oh, well. What's a household God?
- 1:04:50Doing in this house? We're going to find out later on
- 1:04:55in our study of David that he was in the best that this
- 1:04:57marriage thing. He was a man of God.
- 1:05:00He loved God a lot. Not really a good person in
- 1:05:04terms of how he chose a spouse and he wasn't the best dad
- 1:05:09either. We'll get to that later on.
- 1:05:13Now, look what happens. Not only that.
- 1:05:15She lies Saul Comes The Messengers.
- 1:05:18He's sick. Really?
- 1:05:22Not only that. I don't even want to get into.
- 1:05:25What saw saying, saw says, look at this, the progression of sin
- 1:05:31verse 15. Bring him up to me in the bed
- 1:05:33that I may kill him. See, what happened.
- 1:05:36He went from willing that letting the enemies kill him to
- 1:05:41Jonathan, and his servants to kill him.
- 1:05:43And now he himself is saying, let me just do this myself.
- 1:05:46Let me kill him. That's the progression of sin,
- 1:05:50unbridled and uncontrolled, and unrestrained.
- 1:05:52By the power of the Holy Spirit. There's a progression to
- 1:05:55Holiness and there's a progression in sinfulness.
- 1:05:57There's no neutrality in the Christian Journey.
- 1:06:00There's no, there's no end where you put it on and you just sit
- 1:06:02there. No, you're either moving forward
- 1:06:04or backward. When The Messengers came and
- 1:06:08behold the image was in the bed. It's a goat.
- 1:06:09I guess something crazy like that verse 17 salsa that me.
- 1:06:13How, why have you deceived me? Like look, he's playing victim
- 1:06:15though. Because when we are filled with
- 1:06:19carnality, we never see ourselves as the problem.
- 1:06:21We always see ourselves as the victim.
- 1:06:24Why have you deceived me? That's a, let, my enemy go, so
- 1:06:27that he has asked it. That's your son-in-law.
- 1:06:30Let me call answered. So he said to me, let me go.
- 1:06:32Why should I kill you? Show me how although there is
- 1:06:37something to admire about her when she let David go, she gave
- 1:06:39him the word so he can escape she's lying because she's
- 1:06:43clearly afraid of her father. I see a different attitude and
- 1:06:46Jonathan, Jonathan was not like this.
- 1:06:48He was willing to stand to his dad and be truthful.
- 1:06:50And said, this is you're in the wrong.
- 1:06:52You can't be doing this and he was willing to put his life at
- 1:06:55risk. You never cease all throwing a
- 1:06:57spear at me. How you see saw throwing a spear
- 1:07:00Jonathan because Jonathan was a man of Truth and you'll pay a
- 1:07:04price when you stand for. With whether it's gospel truth
- 1:07:07or truth in terms of righteousness.
- 1:07:11Because I wanted to save face. No!
- 1:07:13He try to be try to key threaten me.
- 1:07:15Now. Here's the thing.
- 1:07:16She tried to diffuse the situation by the seductiveness
- 1:07:19of Sin Sin, convinces, you that. If you use it, it will make
- 1:07:24things better without consequences.
- 1:07:27So in that moment, she felt maybe, what many of us felt it
- 1:07:30to try to evade, a dangerous consequence.
- 1:07:33We lie to try to extinguish the moment.
- 1:07:37So she tried to diffuse it. Now.
- 1:07:38Here's my question to all of us. Did this lie?
- 1:07:42Help David, or hurt, David? I think we know the answer.
- 1:07:47Because someone very intelligently observed, that
- 1:07:53Saul could have now used this to go and Chase David.
- 1:07:57Now if anybody asks, all why are you leaving your throne and
- 1:07:59going in the wilderness and chasing he threatened, my
- 1:08:02daughter? He said he was going to kill my
- 1:08:05daughter. I must go.
- 1:08:06I might not have father to stand for my own offspring.
- 1:08:09You see Stick with the truth, stick with the principles of
- 1:08:15righteousness, as much as you might think that sin will make
- 1:08:18things better. And you will evade consequences
- 1:08:21sin has a law, it only brings consequences truth will
- 1:08:26liberate, you truth will save. You truth will keep you He
- 1:08:32called it and do this. And it would only add like what
- 1:08:37sin does either harms you or harm other people.
- 1:08:41Now, let's fast-forward, David fleas.
- 1:08:43He goes to Samuel. We haven't seen Samuel in a very
- 1:08:45long time. He comes to Samuel and he pours
- 1:08:48his heart out to him and I could end it here, but I need to
- 1:08:53complete it with the stop because this is, this is a very
- 1:08:55interesting place in verse 20, saw Liz.
- 1:08:58He's so out of it. He's willing to go to Samuel his
- 1:09:01house to kill David there. So verse 20, salsa and
- 1:09:05Messengers to take David. And when they saw the company of
- 1:09:08the prophets prophesying and Samuel standing as head over
- 1:09:12than the spirit of God, Came Upon The Messengers of Saul and
- 1:09:15they also prophesied. So imagine this, this is almost
- 1:09:19comical saws. There.
- 1:09:20He goes. You been to man.
- 1:09:21Go, go to Samuels house, they go, and they show up at the
- 1:09:24worship service, Samuel is leading the worship, all the
- 1:09:27prophets are worshiping, and The Messengers come in probably
- 1:09:30sword in hand, and the spirit of God comes upon them.
- 1:09:32And they joined the Choir. Verse 21 when it was told Saul
- 1:09:38he's like, hey your ass ass ins became part of the worship team.
- 1:09:44When it was told Saul, he sent other Messengers and they also
- 1:09:48prophesied. You would get the hint, right?
- 1:09:55People make this about how are these people prophesying?
- 1:09:58It doesn't mean that they're necessarily predicting.
- 1:09:59The future prophecy has a broader definition.
- 1:10:03It can also be just declaring the goodness of God, the truth
- 1:10:06of God, the Praises of God. Does anybody have an idea why
- 1:10:10God is allowing this. They may have an idea.
- 1:10:19Who's really in charge Saul? Giving solid chance to redeem
- 1:10:26himself. Yes, and yes, any other ideas.
- 1:10:32Very good. Good good.
- 1:10:34Good observation. Just because you prophesy
- 1:10:38doesn't mean you're from God. Very good.
- 1:10:52Very good observation. You guys are amazing students.
- 1:10:56By the way, this is incredible. Yes.
- 1:10:59Yes. Yes.
- 1:11:00Did this not remind Saul of what he wants experience in God when
- 1:11:03he was walking with God. Absolutely.
- 1:11:08And in fact, if I may add one more thing, God is stopping Saul
- 1:11:12from killing David. These men think that they can
- 1:11:17come to David. You know, what God does.
- 1:11:21Now all this is how amazing God as he could have opened up the
- 1:11:23Earth and swallowed them. He could have done what he did
- 1:11:26with Elijah when the king sent 50 bands, men.
- 1:11:29Remember the fire came from heaven and consume and consume
- 1:11:31the next batch. No, he makes them worship God.
- 1:11:37You want to kill my servant? I'm going to turn you into
- 1:11:40worshippers. Saul hears.
- 1:11:42It. He sends another band of men
- 1:11:44they do the same. So what is Saul do verse 22?
- 1:11:47Then he himself. Can you see it?
- 1:11:51Like almost like a movie? He himself gets off the throne
- 1:11:54and he went to Rama and came to the great.
- 1:11:57Well, that is insecure and he asks, where are Samuel and David
- 1:12:01and once and behold, they are now.
- 1:12:02If and Rama and he went there tonight, othon, Rama and the
- 1:12:07spirit of God Came Upon him also.
- 1:12:09And as he went, he prophesied, until he came to Nazareth and
- 1:12:13Rama. Now, look at this verse 24, and
- 1:12:16he to stripped off his clothes and he to prophesied.
- 1:12:20For Samuel and Lead naked. All that day, and all that
- 1:12:23night. Thus, it is said, is Saul also
- 1:12:26among the prophets, Saul receive the more severe dealing.
- 1:12:30By this the spirit of God, the other men, they prophesy.
- 1:12:34But once all came on the scene. I don't believe that it was
- 1:12:38Saul's voluntary act to start. Taking his clothes off.
- 1:12:42I believe the spirit of God Came Upon him in such a way where he
- 1:12:45did that under that compulsion. And the question is why here it
- 1:12:51is you all touched on it. Beautifully.
- 1:12:54Saul did not get the hint from God that you are fighting.
- 1:12:59Not just against David. You're fighting against me.
- 1:13:03You sent one band of men. I stopped them.
- 1:13:05You sent another band of men. I stop him.
- 1:13:07You yourself come. I stopped you Saul, you're
- 1:13:10fighting against my spirit. You're fighting against my plan,
- 1:13:14my program for my nation. He didn't believe it or at least
- 1:13:18he didn't want to submit to it. He comes and not only this, God
- 1:13:22could have killed salt. He could have taken him out
- 1:13:25right there. But you know what he did.
- 1:13:27As our brother said earlier. He's a lying him to taste.
- 1:13:30What he wants new when he was walking with God.
- 1:13:32This is the grace of God. Do you remember what it was like
- 1:13:36to be under the influence of my spirit?
- 1:13:38You've only known for these past few days and months, what it's
- 1:13:41like to be under a tormenting Spirit, don't you miss what?
- 1:13:43It's like to be under the shower of my grace and mercy, He's
- 1:13:48giving him a taste again, of what it's like to be walking
- 1:13:51right with the Lord. And it's almost an invitation
- 1:13:55for us all to repent, right there.
- 1:13:57And then come back to this. And sometimes the scripture
- 1:14:00tells us that the goodness of God, the kindness of God leads
- 1:14:04us to repentance. It's not always fear and
- 1:14:07judgment that shakes us up though.
- 1:14:08God uses that even sometimes when you are away from God and
- 1:14:12you've heard those testimonies God, just shows his mercy and
- 1:14:17his grace. In such an extravagant way for
- 1:14:20you to realize that sin is not worth it worldliness is not
- 1:14:23worth it. Rebellion is not worth it.
- 1:14:26That's what's happening with Saul.
- 1:14:29But solved it and get it. No repentance.
- 1:14:32So what does God do? He makes him take off his
- 1:14:35clothes. Why to Humble him?
- 1:14:41Saw ultimately the mother of all sins, his pride and Saul refused
- 1:14:45to submit to God, refuse to repent before God.
- 1:14:47So you know what God does you think you're a king as her
- 1:14:50brother said it first. I'm going to show you who's
- 1:14:52really the king. Take off your kingly robes.
- 1:14:56Salt, took off his crown and took off his robe and took off
- 1:15:00his armor, and he lay there like a little boy naked.
- 1:15:04And this is where I study comes full circle.
- 1:15:07And we started, we talked about David's humility and how God
- 1:15:11exalted David because of that. And here we see Saul because of
- 1:15:14his pride. God humiliates him.
- 1:15:20And he knows how to do it. So, we cannot afford, we cannot
- 1:15:26afford to allow our hearts to entertain sin to Harbors.
- 1:15:30An, do you even see the mercy of God here?
- 1:15:32It irks me very much. When people say God of the Old
- 1:15:35Testament, is not a merciful god.
- 1:15:38What was that? That's mercy.
- 1:15:42And God is willing to be merciful to you maybe tonight at
- 1:15:44this Bible study, you know, you're in sin.
- 1:15:48You know, you might even have that jealousy, that envy that
- 1:15:51anger that rage in your heart. God doesn't condemn you tonight.
- 1:15:58God is not looking to destroy you tonight.
- 1:16:01God wants to heal you. God wants to pour His holy
- 1:16:04spirit upon you. God wants you to know the flow
- 1:16:08of his love again. The liberating sense, when you
- 1:16:11know, that you are in right standing with Christ respond to
- 1:16:15that tonight. Let this Bible study be like
- 1:16:18what it was for saw in those Messengers.
- 1:16:20Let It Be An arresting moment for you to realize what you are
- 1:16:24actually doing and where God wants to In you, God is not
- 1:16:27ready to destroy you. God is not ready to get rid of
- 1:16:30you. Even though you've done
- 1:16:31horrendous things as Saul did to David got still is willing to
- 1:16:35put the brakes and say. Can we make this right?
- 1:16:39Would you respond to that tonight for those who are
- 1:16:42serving? God, and you were the opposite
- 1:16:44and you're experiencing great. Slander great, whatever it is
- 1:16:48that you can identify know. This God is your Fortress.
- 1:16:53God is your Fortress. Let's pray.
- 1:17:09Lord, we thank you for this Bible study.
- 1:17:13We thank you that Lord. It is rich in wisdom and that
- 1:17:17you have painted it. So beautifully for us to see it
- 1:17:20in real life so that we can relate to it.
- 1:17:25And God, we ask you. You would heal us because you
- 1:17:34are the great physician. Lord, we are honest before you
- 1:17:38in this moment and we can identify things.
- 1:17:41Maybe that other man other men. Don't know.
- 1:17:45But we know and you know, we ask that you would come and do your
- 1:17:49work in us. We will not be like salt
- 1:17:51tonight. And give you false repentance.
- 1:17:58Lord, for those. Who are making a stands for
- 1:18:02truth and they are being persecuted for it.
- 1:18:04Whether at their job, whether in their families, and it could be
- 1:18:08about gospel truth. Or it could be about just making
- 1:18:13a judgment and a decision for what is Right, given the
- 1:18:17strength to endure, given the strength to communicate their
- 1:18:21convictions with Grace, but with boldness, at the same time.
- 1:18:25Oh Lord, how we need you? How we need you?
- 1:18:30And we ask that you would meet us in this place.
- 1:18:32Jesus name. Amen.
- 1:18:36You can stay seated if you'd like, just in this next few
- 1:18:39short moments. Just Worship the Lord.
- 1:18:41Pray to your God. Communicate your needs.
- 1:18:44Express your love for him and we will dismiss you.
