Clarissa Harlowe, or the History of a Young Lady Volume 1 Letter XXXII

In which Clarissa offers a heartfelt and earnest plea to her uncles, imploring them to reconsider the arranged match that threatens to bind her to a man whom she cannot love, and she lays bare her fears of a life constrained by duty without affection. In reply, her uncles assert their firm insistence on obedience and family honour, exhorting her to embrace the match for the greater good, whilst admonishing her spirited resistance as both obstinate and unbecoming.
