- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Well, welcome in everybody to the Talking Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: And Tristan, we lose another tight one.
- 0:48SPEAKER_06: Yes, we do.
- 0:49SPEAKER_06: We're back to that very familiar feeling in Red Raider Lands of close losses and Big 12 L's.
- 0:56SPEAKER_06: Here we are sitting with an 0-2 record here in the Big 12 conference.
- 1:00SPEAKER_06: The worst possible way you can start, of course, not a single dub.
- 1:04SPEAKER_06: And uh, but here we are with looking for silver linings here in the Talk podcast.
- 1:08SPEAKER_06: We'll talk about the ups, we'll talk about the downs.
- 1:10SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah, we'll open there.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: We'll get into everything, uh, K-State, Texas Tech here in a second.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: We're also gonna talk with uh Travis Holm, a contributor to the Tailgatesociety.com and an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan about the upcoming game this week.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: Um, but first off, we're gonna talk about the uh the K-State Texas Tech game from this past Saturday.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Uh Heartbreaker, it was close.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: Uh uh kind of a roller coaster of a game, uh, to be honest with you.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: We had injuries, uh, obviously with Bowman going down, Columbia coming in, showing a little signs of of good stuff, and uh, you know, just couldn't pull it out in the end and another heartbreaker, and that just seems to be the Texas Tech way, you know.
- 1:56SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 1:57SPEAKER_06: And here we are again.
- 1:58SPEAKER_06: You know, I I wish we could go in and talking.
- 2:01SPEAKER_06: I can I wish I was asking you to play the song.
- 2:03SPEAKER_06: I wish I could tell you to play that song, baby.
- 2:05SPEAKER_06: But unfortunately, you're right.
- 2:07SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech drops another one in the little apple, something that we haven't seen since 2008, or a win we haven't seen there since 2008.
- 2:14SPEAKER_06: It's just heartbreaking to watch this happen once again.
- 2:17SPEAKER_06: And Kansas State was so happy with that win that they went ahead and extended their head coach Chris Kleiman's contract for another two years to two 2626.
- 2:27SPEAKER_06: Um a well-deserved contract, I suppose.
- 2:30SPEAKER_06: You know, it's it's pretty incredible the way that man's just walked into that program and just not missed a step.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, they start after that big loss in week one uh to Arkansas State, they go in and beat OU and beat Tech.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, this uh good for Chris Kleiman.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: He's he's he seems like a solid head coach, like like we said last week, went uh eight and five in his first year at Kansas State, and it looks like he's on route to uh have another good season.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, K-State, uh they they played their butts off.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: We I I think you can't you can't give Texas Tech all the blame here because Kansas State did play pretty great.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: Uh they got their guys involved and they win a lot of these 30-20 games.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: It seems like every Kansas State score ends in 30-something to 20-something, or you know, they just grit and grind it out, man.
- 3:22SPEAKER_06: The Wildcats have luck on their side, I swear.
- 3:24SPEAKER_06: You know, it's just they they do seem to be on the good the the the flip side of everything.
- 3:29SPEAKER_06: You know, they always have the the good ending for them.
- 3:31SPEAKER_06: Uh they moved to 2-0 after upsetting Oklahoma in Norman last weekend.
- 3:37SPEAKER_06: And then they go ahead and sweep us up into uh they block us out for a whole half.
- 3:42SPEAKER_06: We don't score a single thing.
- 3:44SPEAKER_06: That hasn't happened in years.
- 3:45SPEAKER_06: You know, that's something we do not expect out of a Texas Tech football team.
- 3:49SPEAKER_06: And once that happened, I didn't have a lot of hope for us to win.
- 3:52SPEAKER_06: You know, that's how Texas Tech runs, you know, if we score and we're not even doing the thing we're good at, what can we hope for, you know?
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Well, and it was it was actually uh I uh I want to say a good thing because they got me not believing, and that's when I'm less sad.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: Whoa! I'm telling I'm telling you, dude, sports fandom is a hell of a drug because being a sports fan, you just you I never let things sway my mood quite like watching my teams play and seeing them win or lose.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Like if they lose, my day's done, my day's ruined.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's terrible.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: I hate it, and it just happens every time.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: And with Texas Tech, it seems to happen more often than not.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: But it's on me because I don't want it to happen, but tech has given me so much heartbreak, and I I want to say I'm numb to these close losses, but I'm not.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: I never will be.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: I never will be.
- 4:49SPEAKER_06: You and I are the identical in that sense with the way how emotionally invested we keep getting into these games.
- 4:54SPEAKER_06: The problem is the Texas Tech Red Raiders keep roping us back in.
- 4:57SPEAKER_06: You know, I was counting us out at the half, and then we come out and we have a great second half, and we finally get the lead back in the fourth quarter, but of course that lead is not safe here in the fourth quarter with the Texas Tech Red Raiders of 2020.
- 5:10SPEAKER_06: That is the second game in a row where we blow away late lead and uh lose by two touchdowns.
- 5:15SPEAKER_06: So that's uh that's not what we're looking for.
- 5:19SPEAKER_06: Not two touchdowns, but two possessions, I should say.
- 5:22SPEAKER_06: And uh obviously I hate losing these close losses, uh, you know, these heartbreaking fourth uh fourth quarter L's, you know.
- 5:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I if we're gonna lose, please just let's just lose the whole game.
- 5:35SPEAKER_06: Stop roping me back in just to be sad.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: No, they have to do it, they have to rope you back in, and they have to just absolutely crush you because that's the Texas Tech way.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think we should start off this game by talking about uh the quarterbacks, talking about uh obviously Alan Bowman going down with what was looked to be a knee injury.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Um I think Matt Wells has recently said he's kind of day-to-day, so nothing serious, which is good a good sign uh for him.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Uh you hate to see it for this guy because the the everybody starts spewing out you know, he's injury prone, this guy can't stay healthy, and it's kind of joking, kind of not.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: And none of this is his fault.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: And it sucks because that was a late hit, a dirty low hit by the Kansas State uh defensive lineman, and it knocked him out, and that stinks, man.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: That really does.
- 6:32SPEAKER_06: Man, this game was a little extra physical in general.
- 6:35SPEAKER_06: You know, I I was guilty of tweeting my anger towards the refs during this game.
- 6:40SPEAKER_06: I was very frustrated for the safety of our players because it just felt like Kansas State.
- 6:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm not gonna just excuse our team of playing uh the most pristine game either, but I was so upset with the way these uh Kansas State players kept tackling our guys.
- 6:54SPEAKER_06: And I was just so nervous for their safety, you know, being knocked out for the season or whatever, you know, or be worse, you know, being sent to the hospital.
- 7:01SPEAKER_06: So, and especially for our quarterback that is so injury prone, it's and of course, none of it is his fault, of course.
- 7:07SPEAKER_06: It's it's just it's scary to watch for these guys because you know, you obviously genuinely care about their health too.
- 7:13SPEAKER_06: So it's just the these poor players, you know, they work their whole lives to get to this point.
- 7:17SPEAKER_06: You don't want to watch it end like that.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was a very insane game.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Uh Rico Jeffers, of course, uh ejected for targeting uh early in the game.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: And really, the K-State, there should have been, you know, a few of those on their side as well that for some reason the refs didn't call.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Um, but leading with the crown of the helmet, man, I uh you just can't do it.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: And Rico did deserve to get ejected, I mean, you know, for his act on Skyler Thompson, who would actually get hurt on that play as well.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: So it was kind of the battle of the backups.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, K-State probably had four or five straight possessions there in the third, fourth quarter where they led with that crown of the helmet, and it didn't, I mean, it wasn't straight on, but the definition of targeting is leading with the crown of the helmet, and they absolutely did that a few times.
- 8:05SPEAKER_06: It was so frustrating about that is they did pause the play for review.
- 8:09SPEAKER_06: They they, you know, they called up for review on the targeting uh calls and they kept saying no targeting on the field, and that just lit us up.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: You know, I was I was so angry how it they initially they initially called it, they called targeting and then they went to review and they said no targeting when it clearly was targeting.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't know, man.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: I uh the inconsistency with these refs is mind-blowing sometimes.
- 8:31SPEAKER_06: It just and what what hurts so much is you know having bad calls on you is one thing, kind of like last game with the TJ Basher passing interference.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: Um, and you never want to blame and loss on the refs, as we always say.
- 8:44SPEAKER_06: But out of all the calls to be messing up, targeting is one of those ones where you just you really need to you know get it together and and make the right decision because this is for the safety of the players.
- 8:54SPEAKER_06: Whether it's it's on the K-State side or the Texas Tech side, it doesn't matter.
- 8:57SPEAKER_06: You need to take care of these players.
- 8:58SPEAKER_06: Like that's your most important job as a referee, is maintaining the safety of the players on the field.
- 9:02SPEAKER_06: And they I think they totally failed.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: I I think so too.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, but like like you said, uh, you know, and like I said last week, we can't blame the refs for a loss.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: We made our fair share of mistakes.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: Um, but kind of back to back to the quarterback situation, Henry Columbi coming in, replacing Bowman.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Uh I thought played pretty pretty well for the most part.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, he did he had the bad interception at the end of the game.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: Um that's uh you know, if during that it was a really bad pass.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: He was getting hit at the same time.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: At that point, if you don't have it, throw it out of bounds, man.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: It's like the same thing with Bowman sometimes on his interceptions, but uh Columbia looked comfortable, and that was I think the most important factor when you're looking at that.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: Um, I think I think a lot of people were surprised he was actually in the game.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: I think a lot of people thought uh McIver was the backup, uh, especially after last season.
- 9:57SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 9:58SPEAKER_06: And uh what was nice to see about him is like you said, he looked comfortable, he looked confident, it looked like he knew the system, and uh, which is exactly what you want out of a second string quarterback.
- 10:07SPEAKER_06: So I like that he was prepared and ready to go when he was called up.
- 10:10SPEAKER_06: It didn't really take him long to settle in and get going.
- 10:13SPEAKER_06: So really, it's I don't I don't mind I'm not gonna put the loss on him because he did all he could in the in the second half out out barring that interception, which is gonna happen occasionally.
- 10:24SPEAKER_06: So and it's his first game as a Texas Tech Raider on the field.
- 10:28SPEAKER_06: And I I like the I liked what I saw.
- 10:31SPEAKER_06: You know, uh I'm happy with with the depth at quarterback position we seem to have right now.
- 10:37SPEAKER_06: Uh and I obviously, you know, I wish he could have pulled an immaculate drive out of uh out of him to win the game.
- 10:47SPEAKER_06: Unfortunately, that didn't come together.
- 10:49SPEAKER_06: But I think he did what he could given the circumstances for the most part.
- 10:53SPEAKER_06: What do you think?
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: I think uh 244 yards, two touchdowns.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: Um he played, he led the comeback, man.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, he he looked comfortable out there.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: He was leading, especially.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: I really want to talk about that first drive of the second half, that 18 play, 88 yard, uh seven-minute drive.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, he led that to almost perfection on that.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: Every single play was was key.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: And I like I like him under Yost's system.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: He's obviously the Utah State transfer.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: Um, he knows uh Coach Yo's offense, he knows Matt Wells.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Um and I I thought he looked, I thought he was pretty good out there.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and I would I would still be happy if he was the quarterback for Iowa State.
- 11:38SPEAKER_06: So of course that's gonna be the discussion all week long in Raider Land is who do you start at quarterback after that uh situation?
- 11:46SPEAKER_06: Do you have any feelings towards that at all?
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: Uh I have I I I kind of I'm like like you can tell right now, I'm back and forth with it because uh Bowman, as talented as the guy is, uh has not had the best start to the season, uh, throwing some major interceptions and he didn't look good uh during the beginning of this Kansas State game.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: Um and obviously if he's injured, I don't want him playing hobbled, you know.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: So uh I I I know he was trying to give it a go uh there at halftime and trying to give it uh we saw him on the sidelines.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Uh and thank goodness he's not, you know, nothing serious happened to him.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: But uh I would I I'm leaning more towards just letting Columbia go with it and giving giving Bowman some rest for Iowa State.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, but uh you know I'm not gonna I'm not gonna root against Bowman if he if he decides to play.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: So uh that's where I'm at with it.
- 12:45SPEAKER_06: No, that's a very understandable feeling, and I think that's what a lot of us feel like, and I think I might even agree with you on it.
- 12:51SPEAKER_06: Uh the the depth chart was released today.
- 12:54SPEAKER_06: It appears that Alan Bowman is still listed as starting quarterback.
- 12:57SPEAKER_06: Um, I don't know if they would have made that adjustment anyway, even if if Columbia is going to start.
- 13:02SPEAKER_06: I don't know if they would have posted that.
- 13:04SPEAKER_06: Um, obviously Bowman is kind of the uh earned leader right now.
- 13:09SPEAKER_06: He's he is the starter, he is a captain.
- 13:11SPEAKER_06: Um, so I think they're gonna give him the benefit until uh I bet it's gonna be a late decision.
- 13:16SPEAKER_06: You know, I think they're they're probably gonna watch him all week.
- 13:18SPEAKER_06: Um, and I really do think they'll probably make the decision on whether or not Alan Bowman is fully ready to go rather than basing it on the performance of last week.
- 13:26SPEAKER_06: What do you think?
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: I think that uh that's the coach's job is to uh make sure their guys are ready to go for the game.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: And if he's if he's too hurt to go, he's too hurt to go, you know.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Um it's understandable.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: I know he's your starting quarterback, but uh you have to be you have to be excited with how Columbia played coming in, uh, you know, not a lot of warm-up time and coming in and almost leading uh the Red Raiders to victory.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: So uh I would be I would be happy with with Henry Columbi.
- 13:56SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 13:57SPEAKER_06: And I don't want to get off topic from the game, but uh, you know, since we're talking about quarterbacks, can we talk about our recruit real quick?
- 14:04SPEAKER_06: Uh Baron Morton.
- 14:05SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 14:06SPEAKER_06: Jeez, he's up for the Mr.
- 14:09SPEAKER_06: Texas Football Award this week, and holy cow, what a game he just had.
- 14:14SPEAKER_06: I mean, that that young man uh threw for 425 yards, five passing touchdowns.
- 14:23SPEAKER_06: He has legs, he runs for 112 yards, he runs it in for five touchdowns.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: My lord.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: In a game that ended in final score 91 to 71.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: Uh that's not a typo, that is a straight up basketball score.
- 14:40SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, dude, dude showed out never in my life have I seen a score like that, not to pay you off.
- 14:48SPEAKER_06: That's no, you're fine.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that I mean that when I saw that score, I was like, no way, no what?
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: I know, I know it's high school football.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Those scores can get ridiculous sometimes, especially when you have a guy who's like a four-star recruit.
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: You know, he's up for Mr.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: Texas football.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, and he's playing kind of in his his school's kind of halfway between Abilene and Fort Worth.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: So I don't know how dense the competition is in his conference or in his little uh division or whatever.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: So, you know, who knows?
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: But uh obviously love rather see him put up 10 touchdowns total in a game than no touchdowns, you know.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: So uh I'm excited for him for sure.
- 15:25SPEAKER_06: He's a four-star quarterback, he's recruited by Wells.
- 15:27SPEAKER_06: So I'm excited to see a Wells guy get the quarterback position.
- 15:31SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, I because I think that'll kind of show how the system really looks under Wells' eye, too, you know.
- 15:36SPEAKER_06: Um, so uh obviously you you you get a coach to get these kinds of players because I I can't recall the last time we had a four-star QB commit to Texas Tech.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: I don't think it's been while we're fans.
- 15:47SPEAKER_06: So I think the closest we've got was Jared Stinnham, a five-star, which uh eventually didn't pan out the way we wanted it to.
- 15:55SPEAKER_06: Um, but heck yeah, so excited to see this this this young man get to Lubbock, and I I'm sure he's very excited too, because obviously he's ready for higher competition.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's gonna be super interesting to see how the next few years kind of pan out who's gonna be the starter.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: You know, with Bowman, he's technically only a sophomore, I guess, and this year doesn't even count towards eligibility.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: So it's like McGyver's still here, you know.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: You got it looks like Columbia's a senior, so he's probably not gonna be here too much longer.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: But um, and then we got this guy coming in.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll see what what Wells plans to do um for the upcoming years.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: But um yeah, kind of back to the game.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: Uh Skylar Thompson on the other end got injured as well.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: Uh it was a battle of the backups.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Uh Columbi, I think, definitely showed up more than the other guy on K-State's team.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Uh K-State.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: The the thing that killed us was their running.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: Uh Deuce Vaughn was a man out there.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: Uh and you know, he a little bitty guy, but he killed us.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: He our our tackling is was horrible this game.
- 17:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah, the the big plays came back to haunt us.
- 17:03SPEAKER_06: You know, we we kept letting these huge yard plays just keep ruining our momentum.
- 17:09SPEAKER_06: And that's that's been Texas Tech's defense biggest ill for forever.
- 17:13SPEAKER_06: And we just we had it under control against UT.
- 17:17SPEAKER_06: And then we go and play Kansas State, which no no offense to Kansas State.
- 17:21SPEAKER_06: They probably don't have the offensive firepower that UT does in the grand scheme.
- 17:25SPEAKER_06: And we had a hard, harder time containing uh these big plays against K-State.
- 17:29SPEAKER_06: It's just it's frustrating to watch.
- 17:32SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, obviously this kid can ball, but it's frustrating watching him slice and dice you up, and just he is definitely the dagger that kept us uh kept us below K-State in the game.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean he did it on both rushing and receiving.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: The receiving's kind of upped because of that last long touchdown at the end of the game.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: It was like a 70-yard or whatever, but um, you get a guy who's leading in both rushing and receiving.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's a problem, but uh yeah, uh their third down efficiency was was bad too.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: Uh you look at six for twelve on third down for Kansas State, that's not awful, uh, but it's not great.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: And for a team that really hasn't been good on third down this whole season, I mean I I think there was a stat where they were like four of twenty something before this game on third down, you know, if from OU and Arkansas State.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: And so uh for us to let up on those on those big plays when we need a stop, that was disheartening.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: Uh and then the dagger, of course, at the end of the game, the the long touchdown where it was our last chance.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: You know, if we got a stop, we at least get the ball again.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: But uh no, he just went down and ripped our hearts out.
- 18:41SPEAKER_06: I I always get so nervous every time we get the third down.
- 18:44SPEAKER_06: You know, so down we should be getting hyped up, like, yes, just one more, let's get it.
- 18:47SPEAKER_06: But it's like, oh god, how how many yards are we gonna give up on this big play, huh?
- 18:51SPEAKER_06: So yeah, every time, man.
- 18:54SPEAKER_06: We never know what to do, man.
- 18:56SPEAKER_06: It's it's been a problem for years.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was tough.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: Um, but on the flip side of things, our running backs were pretty awesome.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: So Rodrick not having a big day, but Xavier White more than made up for it.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: The Lubbock local guy averaged 9.4 yards of carry, 114 yards, I believe, and broke off for that 49-yard touchdown.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: All of our running backs have looked good this year.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, every single one of them is competent, which is so weird to say.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: We have four really good running backs on this Texas Tech team.
- 19:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I just I really wanted to reflect on the scoreboard right now.
- 19:31SPEAKER_06: You know, it's like uh you they really kept us down off the off the board here in K-State.
- 19:37SPEAKER_06: You know, that that is not a 21 points, that's nothing for tech.
- 19:41SPEAKER_06: You know, and with our running packs going off like they are, uh it just it feels like we should be scoring more and we should be able to have a better control of the clock.
- 19:50SPEAKER_06: And just unfortunately, with with how awesome they are, I I just wish it reflected more on the outcome.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and this game, the score, we have uh a few different things that happened, but special teams was absolutely brutal this game.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, from coming off a UT game where they were hot and cold but made a few huge plays, they made absolutely zero plays this week, um, and only hurt us.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, the block pun at the very beginning of the game.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, come on, come on, man.
- 20:22SPEAKER_06: C-State's thing right now, too.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but uh the blocking on it was just brutal.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: We had two guys protecting McNamara down there, and one of the guys didn't even, I mean, I think it was 50 number 53.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: It wasn't Eli Howard, but there was another 53, I think.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: And this dude, I mean, he just let him go right by him.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: And then obviously Trey Wolfe, um, missing two field goals, guy we talked about at the beginning of the year being in a bright spot.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Um, absolutely, you know, and and one of them was like a 33 yarder or something.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: It's so mental.
- 20:56SPEAKER_04: Two games in a row.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: I know it's it's so mental with these kickers.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: It's like this dude, 20 for 22 last year in 2019 on field goals, and he goes in this game, just donks one of them, and then far, I believe, right, and that's six points right there.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: That's six points that we would have had on the board.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: We would have been leading, you know, for after that second touchdown by Xavier White if we had those six points on the board, and it just sucks.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: It just sucks.
- 21:28SPEAKER_06: We're so high on the special teams unit uh in preseason, and they showed a lot of promise in the UT game and uh until some blunders.
- 21:35SPEAKER_06: It's uh I something that I always say, and I just feel like we can never get right is uh no unit on a Texas Tech football team is allowed to be good at the same time.
- 21:47SPEAKER_06: It's only one at a time that is allowed to be good on a Texas Tech football team.
- 21:52SPEAKER_06: We can never ever be a complete team, and it's it is the most frustrating thing in the world to watch.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Because honestly, defense didn't do too bad in that first half.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: We held them 14 points, you know, not not too bad.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: We scored zero points.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: And then we go in the second half and we score 21 straight points.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: We take the lead and then automatic big play.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: And they they come back, take the lead in like a minute.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: It's we can't have nice things.
- 22:18SPEAKER_06: And generally, I'm okay with holding a Big 12 team to 31 points with with uh our offensive capabilities.
- 22:25SPEAKER_06: Yet our offense couldn't score at all in the first half.
- 22:30SPEAKER_06: It's it's just so frustrating.
- 22:32SPEAKER_06: You know, any other typical tech offense would blow past 31 points.
- 22:38SPEAKER_06: It's just so it is so frustrating to watch our team not be able to put together a complete game.
- 22:45SPEAKER_06: So that kind of that would kind of bring me into my into my rant once you kind of uh fulfill your your game review.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: No, go ahead.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Rant rant away, my friend.
- 22:57SPEAKER_06: Okay, ladies and gentlemen, your Texas Tech Red Raiders are 0 and 2 against Big 12 competition.
- 23:03SPEAKER_06: Not only are they 0 and 2 against Big 12 competition, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are have won zero FBS games this year.
- 23:10SPEAKER_06: And if that keeps up, we could possibly go a full calendar year without a single Big 12 win.
- 23:18SPEAKER_06: Our last Big 12 win was November 9th, 2019 at West Virginia.
- 23:23SPEAKER_06: A very bad West Virginia uh team last year, a much better one this year.
- 23:28SPEAKER_06: Right now we are on a five-game losing streak to Kansas State.
- 23:32SPEAKER_06: Of the last 10 games we have played against Kansas State, we have lost nine games.
- 23:38SPEAKER_06: We have lost nine out of the ten games against Kansas State.
- 23:43SPEAKER_06: We haven't beaten Kansas State in Manhattan since 2008.
- 23:49SPEAKER_06: Kirby Holcutt, a Kansas State Wildcat alumni, has only beaten his alma mater once since coming into tech in 2011.
- 24:04SPEAKER_06: In 2012, Kansas State wins a share of the Big 12 title with OU, making their second Big 12 title overall.
- 24:13SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech has zero Big 12 football titles.
- 24:17SPEAKER_06: This brings me back to my final point to this.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: What is Kansas State doing that Texas Tech can't?
- 24:27SPEAKER_06: Kirby Holcutt himself said in his last show there's no reason for Kansas State to be beating Texas Tech due to recruiting and resources.
- 24:35SPEAKER_06: And I agree.
- 24:36SPEAKER_06: What is happening to this football team?
- 24:39SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech's floor should be six and six, in my opinion.
- 24:44SPEAKER_06: What is it?
- 24:45SPEAKER_06: Is it the culture?
- 24:47SPEAKER_06: Is it the coaching?
- 24:48SPEAKER_06: Is it the players?
- 24:50SPEAKER_06: Because Kirby promised us elite.
- 24:53SPEAKER_06: And right now it's the bill is not being filled, and I'm not saying it won't ever be under Wells.
- 24:58SPEAKER_06: I'm just saying where we're at right now.
- 25:00SPEAKER_06: Kansas State, whenever they fired Bill Snyder back in 2018, they were five and seven.
- 25:07SPEAKER_06: Chris Kleiman comes in in his first year, they go eight and five and tie for third in the Big 12.
- 25:16SPEAKER_06: So my question is, what is going on in the Texas Tech football program where a team like Kansas State, and it's absolutely no disrespect.
- 25:24SPEAKER_06: If anything, it's it's nothing but admiration to Kansas uh um to Kansas State.
- 25:29SPEAKER_06: What is Texas Tech doing that a team like Kansas State can do?
- 25:34SPEAKER_06: Like what what what is it about the Red Raiders that cannot put together a team like Kansas State can?
- 25:42SPEAKER_06: And that's the end of my rant.
- 25:44SPEAKER_06: That is my Raider rant for the episode.
- 25:46SPEAKER_06: Uh, I apologize if I bummed any of y'all out.
- 25:49SPEAKER_06: It was just my frustration that I've been stewing in for a weekend.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 25:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Um, all fair points.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Uh Kansas State, there should be no reason Kansas State has been better than Texas Tech over the past few years.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: And I think the answer to your question, it's not the players because we've had the talent in every way.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: Even this season, we have talent, we have a talented team.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: What I think it is, is the coaching and the culture.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: I think two points that you brought up.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: It's coaching ever since the firing of Mike Leach, you know, and Tuberville basically just bailing on us.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: Kingsbury did not he did not do well here.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells has not had a good start here.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Um and it the fact that there's so many close losses over the span of these past few years makes it makes me believe that it's a coaching thing, it and a culture thing.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: These guys, there comes a point late late in the game where I don't know if we just don't believe in ourselves.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it just uh it's in the back of our minds that hey, we've lost a million of these already, you know, we're probably just gonna lose again.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: I I don't I don't know the true answer to this, but I think it starts with the culture, and the way to fix that is to win some of these close games and to change uh change the path in which we're going towards the rest of the season.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: That's why winning that UT game would have been so huge, because that would have just completely changed our mindset, it would have given us confidence, it would have done everything that we wanted it to do, but uh you know it just it's gonna be that one big game this year, and I I I don't know if it'll happen this year.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it'll happen this year.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: I hope it happens soon.
- 27:46SPEAKER_06: That's that that's a great rebuttal, man.
- 27:48SPEAKER_06: And I think that's those are all very good points.
- 27:52SPEAKER_06: And everyone keeps coming back to the breakout game, and I do think there's a lot of truth to that.
- 27:55SPEAKER_06: I think the UT game would have been huge, I think that would have gave us a lot of momentum going into the season.
- 28:00SPEAKER_06: But was Oklahoma State last season not a breakthrough game for Texas Tech?
- 28:06SPEAKER_06: Uh we we we dominate a ranked Oklahoma State team in the Jones, but it didn't show out for the rest of the season at all.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: You know, if if we go and beat, yeah, we beat a ranked team in Lubbock, but I'm talking about if we beat like a 2015 TCU, a 2016 OU, uh maybe a Texas this year, who knows how they're gonna end up, but uh beating a team who ended up being pretty good, you know, not just being ranked at the time, but being good throughout the whole year, you know what I'm saying?
- 28:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so do you you think the beginning to the path of ball eligible eligibility six and six begins at beating a number one, two, or three team in the Big 12?
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: I think that's I think that's a start.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: I think it's a start winning these close games with good teams that were in.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: We're in these games.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: Let me compare it to basketball because basketball 2016 is kind of where we took the turn into being a very good basketball school and being a very good program.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: And that started when we beat number three OU and Buddy Healed a Big 12 contender.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: I don't think they ended up well, they might have ended up winning the Big 12.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: I think they ended up winning the Big 12 that year, but they came into Lubbock and we won that game.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: We won that close game with a very good team, and we just rode that on.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: And the next few years we beat Iowa State a few times that were ranked in the top 10.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: We beat uh West Virginia a few times that were ranked in the top 10, you know, Baylor, that kind of stuff.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: And that feeds your team and your program and gives you a kind of uh program, uh just you know, juice.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Juice, yeah.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: Just kind of a that that thing that clicks in your mind that says, hey, we just beat freaking number three Oklahoma.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: Like we can beat anybody in this freaking world, man.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: We can go in to any house and we can we can pull the upset off.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: That's and we haven't done that yet with football, at least in the past few years.
- 30:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I I think that's a great comparison.
- 30:13SPEAKER_06: And I I I'm not counting any of that from happening out.
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: It's just it's been so frustrating to not have it yet.
- 30:22SPEAKER_06: It's been about 10 years, and that is just it's just nine mind-numbing, you know, and we care so much about this program.
- 30:30SPEAKER_06: You know, we we all of all of us, all the Red Raiders out there, you know, especially the ones listening to this, we pour our hearts and souls into this fandom.
- 30:37SPEAKER_06: You know, it's we love it so much, and just to watch our hopes get crushed over and over again and like not be given anything, like anything we get is just like a teaspoon, like the OSU game.
- 30:51SPEAKER_06: You know, we're we're not asking for much, you know.
- 30:53SPEAKER_06: We're just we're just looking for a team to cheer for and be happy with at the end of the day.
- 30:58SPEAKER_06: And unfortunately, I it's been hard to have that.
- 31:01SPEAKER_06: And I think you know, if we can't beat the Kansas States of the world, who who are we gonna go and beat next week?
- 31:09SPEAKER_06: You know, it's and I bet the players feel the same way, like you're saying with the uh with the juice.
- 31:14SPEAKER_06: We're looking for some juice and you know, getting beat by uh your biggest rival at home in a heart crushing game, and then going to uh uh a solid Kansas State, but they're not a world rocker, and uh lose again, and then we're about to head on the road to uh what's looking like an Iowa State team that's back on their feet, um to a very similar situation to Iowa State.
- 31:36SPEAKER_06: I mean to Kansas State.
- 31:38SPEAKER_06: So I'm just looking, like you said a couple weeks ago, uh give me one reason.
- 31:44SPEAKER_06: And it's it's been hard to find the reasons outside of you know good positives to take from games, you know.
- 31:52SPEAKER_06: I think as fans, we're getting kind of tired of just having to just only take positives out of games rather than saying we got the W.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's tough.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: It it's getting tougher and tougher just to make excuses.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: You know, you want to say, hey, a few plays here or there, you know, Bowman doesn't get hurt here, you know, this or that.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: But uh we got to get uh all in all, you know, at the end of the day, we gotta get wins.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: We got to get wins on the board.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, that could start this weekend with Iowa State.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: It could not happen this season, but whatever happens, it you know, whatever the case, it needs to happen.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: We need to get a couple wins for this team, for this program, and for this university.
- 32:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, one more comparison is uh so you have Kansas State and Iowa State losing utterly embarrassing losses, like season enders, honestly, in game one.
- 32:43SPEAKER_06: And the way they respond is uh makes me so jealous.
- 32:49SPEAKER_06: They're they've gone and won both of their games since.
- 32:53SPEAKER_06: So we we we scrape by, we don't lose, it feels like one.
- 32:58SPEAKER_06: We scrape by our FCS team, and then we lose a uh a soul crushing game to UT, and we respond by going to lose against Kansas State.
- 33:06SPEAKER_06: It's why can those programs respond to a worse situation than we can?
- 33:13SPEAKER_06: You know, we were in the advantage situation with a W on the board while they were all everyone was laughing at them, you know.
- 33:20SPEAKER_06: So what I think that might be a coaching thing and a culture thing.
- 33:24SPEAKER_06: I just want some of that in Lubbock.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that looks to be the difference right now is the coaching.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna say Matt Wells is is a bad hire yet.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: I'm still I'm you know, I'm not gonna say anything negative too negative about Matt Wells yet.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Um, but Chris Kleiman and Matt Campbell are both good coaches, so that's the difference right now.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: And that and they proved it that they're good coaches.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: So uh they get their team up and ready to to turn it around.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll see what Matt Wells does with this team.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: If he's just gonna falter, you know, that that sucks.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Uh hopefully he brings it for Iowa State and hopefully we can salvage a little bit of the season.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: It's still only three games, it's still only three games into the season.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: We're still only one and two.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, it's not like we're one and eight.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Like, we're one and two right now.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: We have we have time.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: You gotta if you're Matt Wells, you better be, you know, kicking these guys' butts and getting them ready for the rest of the season because there is a lot of season.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you have two pretty crushing losses to start the season, but there's still a lot of season, and you gotta win a few of these, you know, Iowa States, Baylors, TCUs, you gotta win a few of these, man.
- 34:34SPEAKER_06: No doubt.
- 34:35SPEAKER_06: And I I I'm not counting the season out yet.
- 34:37SPEAKER_06: I I just wanted I just wanted to vent with our fellow fans, you know.
- 34:41SPEAKER_06: I just wanted to put into words how we feel right now.
- 34:43SPEAKER_06: And I'm gonna be looking towards that uh Iowa State game with some positivity.
- 34:47SPEAKER_06: You know, you it's I love this team.
- 34:50SPEAKER_06: I love, I mean, I love Red Raiders.
- 34:52SPEAKER_06: So this isn't over.
- 34:55SPEAKER_06: Like you said, there's a long season to go.
- 34:57SPEAKER_06: It's just obviously you're off to the worst possible start in conference play, 0-2.
- 35:02SPEAKER_06: And it's we better respond soon, or it's it's just gonna keep being the same old story.
- 35:09SPEAKER_06: You know, we need a break in the repetition.
- 35:11SPEAKER_06: You know, I'm tired of this uh typical tech in the negative way.
- 35:14SPEAKER_06: I want typical tech in the good way.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: And uh hopefully that happens here soon.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: But I think I mean, do you have any more points on this Kansas State game?
- 35:24SPEAKER_06: Nah, I think uh I went ahead and threw a Molotov at that boat.
- 35:28SPEAKER_06: And I think you and I can move on.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man, it's kind of like you T.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Just just move past it and try to get better, and and hopefully we get a couple wins here here soon.
- 35:40SPEAKER_06: What a horrible day for Texas colleges.
- 35:45SPEAKER_06: Everybody lost except everyone lost, yeah.
- 35:48SPEAKER_06: And that's that's okay.
- 35:49SPEAKER_06: We'll take the one.
- 35:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah, seriously.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, for professional too, Cowboys and Texans both look brutal.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, man, state of Texas for how we how we hype up our football, and then everybody stinks.
- 36:08SPEAKER_06: David, and I think the funniest story of the day is AM getting waxed in Alabama.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: That's great.
- 36:13SPEAKER_06: That's always good news.
- 36:15SPEAKER_06: Because this was the year that Alabama was supposed to, I mean Alabama, AM was supposed to break through year.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: That's every year, according to Stan.
- 36:23SPEAKER_06: But it's it's third year Jimbo Fisher, so actually sports heads were actually saying if it's gonna be a year, it's gonna be year three, which is understandable for hires.
- 36:32SPEAKER_06: So it's this isn't happening for Jimbo Fisher right now.
- 36:35SPEAKER_06: I don't know how you love to see it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know how they can't find a better quarterback than Kellen Mond.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: I don't that dude stinks.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Heism.
- 36:45SPEAKER_03: Heismond.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's good.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: No, it's not, it's not gonna happen, Aggies.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: It's that dude stinks.
- 36:53SPEAKER_06: The 75 million dollar man cannot pull it off.
- 36:57SPEAKER_06: AM has never even tied for a division title in the West.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: So it's uh I I enjoy watching it.
- 37:04SPEAKER_06: You know, I'm not saying it's the easiest path.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: Dude, it's great.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: It's fun to watch if you're detected.
- 37:09SPEAKER_06: It's very funny.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: I saw a tweet from our boy Kyle when he was doing his Aggie Fact Thursday, and he was like, uh, I think it's AM spent$600 million on stadium renovations and coaching hires since they moved to the SEC.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: And their win percentage in the SEC, 53%.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: Their win percentage in the Big 12, also 53%.
- 37:33SPEAKER_06: Just a stat line you're very happy seeing as a Red Raider or a Longhorn or a Bear or a Hornfrog.
- 37:40SPEAKER_06: So that's that's hilarious.
- 37:42SPEAKER_06: I'm obviously AM is cuffed to Jimbo for a good while.
- 37:46SPEAKER_06: I mean, they a good while.
- 37:49SPEAKER_06: So we'll probably be seeing similar results for a while until Jimbo can find his Jameis Winston again.
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: Um, hopefully that doesn't happen, but again, just pretty funny to look from afar.
- 37:58SPEAKER_06: Alabama obviously looks like the real deal.
- 37:59SPEAKER_06: Another boring year for Alabama, steamrolling everybody, it appears.
- 38:03SPEAKER_06: So uh the talk of Texas right now is Red Raider led SMU.
- 38:09SPEAKER_06: SMU is the best team in Texas, they're 4-0, and then and it's pretty cool to see uh um another Dykes kind of take the reins of the coaching and just go off.
- 38:18SPEAKER_06: It's he's having a wonderful year in Dallas, and uh I like seeing him do well.
- 38:22SPEAKER_06: You know, it's always cool seeing Red Raiders, and heck, you know, uh obviously I'm I'm gunning for this this Wells era, but I mean you kind of think he might be putting on an audition for his alma mater.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, I don't know, man.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: I I don't know.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: It it seems you know good for the private kids over at SMU, good good for the Californians that choose to go to SMU over there.
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I don't know, maybe, maybe who who knows?
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm still I don't want to I don't want to talk about different head coaches at Texas Tech right now.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: I don't want to do that.
- 38:54SPEAKER_06: Same man.
- 38:54SPEAKER_06: I I'm just saying I'm just saying it's it's wonderful to see Red Raiders perform so dang well, like Lincoln Riley has and uh Sunny Sonny Dykes has.
- 39:01SPEAKER_06: So um I just wanted to give the ponies a little credit since he's led by Red Raider.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: Um sickest, sickest uniforms in the game.
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: That's what I'll tell uh about SMU.
- 39:10SPEAKER_06: Love the Dallas uniforms, those are awesome.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, those that's that's that's all I'm gonna give him credit for.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 39:16SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 39:17SPEAKER_06: And the the last uh uh little thing I want to talk about in uh in Texas is you know, you're talking about those UT fans going crazy, but uh is does UT have a Tom Herman problem?
- 39:31SPEAKER_06: Is is do you think he has much longer in Austin?
- 39:33SPEAKER_06: I know Kyle thinks he's there for uh for the indefinite timeline, yeah.
- 39:39SPEAKER_06: And he knows the program better than we do, but I mean I mean, I just you know the best year he had was year two in the Big 12 title game, and he didn't even win it.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: So well, this this they were saying every all the media was saying that this is I mean, UT, this is the last year of uh of Ellinger.
- 39:55SPEAKER_03: This is kind of when they need to put it together.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure if he's gonna stay another year now that he's got an extra year of eligibility.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: I probably would if I would if I was Sam Ellinger, but um I the thing about today and and what we're dealing with in college football is and financially with with COVID hitting these programs so hard is that it's not gonna be so easy to fire a coach that still has a few years left on his contract.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna have that conversation.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, we don't have that conversation with Matt Wells when it comes to it.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, with these coaches, uh a university cannot afford to fire a guy with two years left on his deal.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: They just can't because the university is losing so much money from not having fans in their stadium, from not having all this sort of stuff.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: And that's that's really what it's gonna come down to.
- 40:47SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't think, you know, unless it's like an absolutely brutal season, one win, two wins, or whatever.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: I don't think Tom Herman has anything to worry about this year.
- 40:57SPEAKER_06: Oh, neither do I.
- 40:58SPEAKER_06: I'm I'm just saying, is the is the heat turning up?
- 41:00SPEAKER_06: You know, isn't it shorter?
- 41:02SPEAKER_06: As long as the worst that can happen this year is that it gets really hot in your room because nobody's getting fired.
- 41:08SPEAKER_06: It's a good time to be a head coach.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: I'll say one thing about UT fans is they're impatient, and they were impatient with Charlie, Charlie Strong, and they're gonna be impatient with Tom Herman if he doesn't start getting you know some more wins in the bag.
- 41:21SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 41:22SPEAKER_06: So I you know, this is a big this is a uh Texas Tech podcast, so I uh but at the end of the day, so I just wanted to touch on those really quick.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: Um, so uh everybody you know, classic drinky game, do a quick drink, uh quick realignment talk.
- 41:38SPEAKER_06: Look at BYU go.
- 41:42SPEAKER_06: I've always said, you know, if the Big 12 is ever gonna add a team, it better be BYU.
- 41:47SPEAKER_06: You know, if the landscape stays as it is, you know, um the pack doesn't fall apart, whatever, anything super speculative.
- 41:54SPEAKER_06: Um, it's the BYU is number 15 and they have crushed everyone they played.
- 42:00SPEAKER_06: Look, I know their competition hasn't exactly been Alabama, but holy cow, this is ridiculous.
- 42:08SPEAKER_06: And it's just sometimes it feels like are they putting on an audition, you know?
- 42:13SPEAKER_06: And it's it's just crazy because they they blew out navy, uh the troops, the troops didn't get any practice, so we're gonna just we're gonna no kind of walk past that one.
- 42:22SPEAKER_06: They blew out Troy 48 to 7, they blew out La Tech 45 to 14, and they've just looked so freaking good.
- 42:30SPEAKER_06: And you you would just think maybe if they're in the Big 12 right now, they might be at the top of the pack.
- 42:34SPEAKER_06: I I don't know.
- 42:35SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 42:35SPEAKER_06: It's just especially the COVID year.
- 42:37SPEAKER_06: I wish we would just set an F it and add them for the year like they did for Notre Dame and in the ACC.
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: You are the biggest proponent for BYU to the Big 12 I've ever seen.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, I haven't seen I haven't seen I've seen you passionate about a lot of things, but this this is something you constantly bring up is BYU to the Big 12.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: And I don't disagree with you, uh, especially with how good BYU is and how how high profile a program they are.
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, I great start for them.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: I I you know I'd love to have two more teams back in the Big 12 to actually make it the Big 12 again.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: So uh if that's BYU in Memphis or BYU in Houston or BYU in somebody, uh I'm cool with it, man.
- 43:18SPEAKER_06: The second team is always the issue.
- 43:19SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah, and um and don't get me wrong, I love the round robin.
- 43:23SPEAKER_06: And I if anything, I was thinking if we had BYU, just make it 11 teams.
- 43:26SPEAKER_06: We could probably still do the round robin.
- 43:27SPEAKER_06: So yeah, um it I just thought it was that was kind of fun to to to tie up the episode.
- 43:34SPEAKER_06: So um look look at look at the look at them go.
- 43:37SPEAKER_06: Obviously, geography is not the best thing for joining the Big 12 for them.
- 43:41SPEAKER_06: So, but uh man, uh props to them.
- 43:43SPEAKER_06: They might be looking at an NY6 bowl at the end of the season.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: So um, well, I think uh after some Big Twelve talk and after some Kansas State talk, we can kind of get into our Iowa State preview with Travis, and uh that's coming up ahead.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Well, we're here for the Iowa State Texas Tech Preview.
- 44:03SPEAKER_03: We have Travis Holm here.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: He's a contributor to the tailgate society.com and the number two Iowa State Cyclones fan right behind Cyclone Larry.
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: Travis, how are you doing today, man?
- 44:16SPEAKER_07: I'm doing pretty good.
- 44:17SPEAKER_07: By the way, free Cyclone Larry.
- 44:28SPEAKER_07: Sad.
- 44:28SPEAKER_07: Sad.
- 44:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: Twitter, Twitter out here just ruining lives and you know, just get it get our boy Cyclone Larry back.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: That dude's Twitter is fire.
- 44:40SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, I I got a good kick out of that, but yeah, it's uh it's definitely an injustice that we must address.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 44:49SPEAKER_07: Hashtag free Larry.
- 44:51SPEAKER_07: Hashtag free going.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Uh well man, we brought you on here because obviously Texas Tech takes on the Cyclones this coming weekend in Ames.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: Uh Iowa State has uh beaten Texas Tech the last five years in a row.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: Uh before that, we had a much better record, but uh, you know, those were the good old days.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: But um, man, we just had some questions for you about this current Iowa State football team and kind of how the culture has shifted with the Cyclones the past few years since you've been in college from till right now.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: How has how has the fandom been?
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: Has it been just much better?
- 45:32SPEAKER_07: Um actually when I was in college, it was kind of good.
- 45:36SPEAKER_07: Um wasn't great, but kind of good is probably how I would describe it.
- 45:40SPEAKER_07: Um we went to three bowl games when I was in college, so it was far from futility, I guess you could say.
- 45:48SPEAKER_07: Paul Rhodes just ran out of gas.
- 45:51SPEAKER_07: Um I think a lot of those games where you guys were talking about tech having a better record against Iowa State.
- 45:58SPEAKER_07: A lot of that was kind of towards the end of the Rhodes era where he just couldn't quite get anything to work anymore.
- 46:05SPEAKER_07: And quite frankly, Matt Campbell's just made it work.
- 46:10SPEAKER_07: He knows who we are, he knows what Iowa State needs to win, he knows what league we're in.
- 46:17SPEAKER_07: I mean, he literally created a new defense to defend against Big 12 offenses.
- 46:22SPEAKER_07: If you guys remember the 2017 game against Oklahoma, that was the first time we debuted that 3-3-5 um hybrid defense that half the league copies now.
- 46:35SPEAKER_07: So naturally, um I think a lot of what Matt Campbell did was built upon what some previous coaches did.
- 46:43SPEAKER_07: You know, each coach kind of got things rolling.
- 46:47SPEAKER_07: Iowa State just didn't support football, didn't have the facilities, didn't have a whole lot of anything going for it.
- 46:53SPEAKER_07: And there was a a team down the road which had hate which has had two coaches since 1978, and they uh, you know, when I when I make the phrase um Iowa State's learning who they are, and they've found success because they know who they are.
- 47:09SPEAKER_07: Um the program down the road, that's they've had their identity since 1978.
- 47:13SPEAKER_07: So we're I mean, honestly, we're just kind of taking our cues off of them or a Kansas State, where as all these coaches have kind of built things up, Iowa State's discovering who they are, how we win this way, what's the formula, and how do we stick with it?
- 47:29SPEAKER_07: And uh that's coaching, that's administration, that's fans.
- 47:35SPEAKER_07: Um it's it's been an organically built fan base, not with money, not with high dollar donors, just good old Iowins.
- 47:43SPEAKER_07: And um Matt Campbell is was the right coach at the right time because that stuff had been building even without the big wins.
- 47:53SPEAKER_07: Now I think we're just finally seeing the fruition of probably 20 years of vision, really.
- 47:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, before you came on, Steve and I were sitting here talking about the secret sauce of Iowa State and how it's definitely Matt Campbell.
- 48:06SPEAKER_06: This guy's like top three uh coaches in the Big 12 without question, and the guy definitely knows how to beat Texas Tech.
- 48:13SPEAKER_06: Uh, since we are on the talking tech pod, I mean, we just kind of go ahead and lay it out there.
- 48:17SPEAKER_06: Matt Campbell is completely undefeated against the Texas Tech Red Raiders, uh, and that the man knows how to beat tech and he knows how to win in the Big 12.
- 48:25SPEAKER_06: I mean, I've I've I'm definitely jealous of the seasons we've all been having.
- 48:28SPEAKER_06: And uh that's and obviously no offense to Iowa State.
- 48:31SPEAKER_06: It's just it's it's something that I didn't expect whenever I first came into Texas Tech uh in college, you know, whenever we uh um didn't have any any issue getting Pascal for the first two years we were in school.
- 48:42SPEAKER_06: But Iowa State has done a complete turnaround and now they're one of the talks of the uh entire Big 12 conference in general.
- 48:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean it's like like I said, um a lot of it has just been kind of a perfect storm.
- 48:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Matt Campbell is the right coach at the right time, running the system, but you know there's just a lot of really good things around the whole fan base, the whole institution that's really, really come together in just this right way.
- 49:11SPEAKER_07: So I think and I think that we didn't really we didn't really reinvent the wheel here.
- 49:16SPEAKER_07: This isn't much different than how Kansas State rebuilt built.
- 49:20SPEAKER_07: Um we've seen Kansas go on a run, we've seen Missouri go on a run in this league.
- 49:26SPEAKER_07: Um we see schools like Iowa go on runs, we see, you know, you're produced similar schools, you know, the land grant model where you don't have to accept mediocrity, so um that's just kind of where we're at.
- 49:40SPEAKER_07: Um I mean when it comes to beating tech, I mean, he just has that defense where y'all gotta try something different, you know.
- 49:50SPEAKER_07: I mean, you got the good wide receivers, but we're putting all of our safeties in our corners back, so have beaten them, you know.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: Well, and I think you gotta you gotta kind of tell make this season a little different because at least from Texas Tech standpoint, we're coming now with some running back game.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: Uh it's been a long time since we've had you know good running back, solid, solid uh running attack.
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: And we're getting a few guys this year, and it it seems like last week Xavier White had his kind of breakout game um into the league, and him and Sir Roderick Thompson, and we have a couple more Chedarius Townsend, the Alabama transfer and that kind of stuff.
- 50:27SPEAKER_03: Uh they're coming in, and hopefully our rushing attack's been solid this season, so so maybe uh Matt Campbell will come up with something to to kind of switch that around too.
- 50:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, just overall, I mean, I I feel like our defense is just very sound.
- 50:41SPEAKER_07: Um, I know that our defense is designed for a little more potent offense, but you know, we we we got some dudes on the line.
- 50:48SPEAKER_07: That's kind of it it it it's it's definitely still even though we got a you know a new you know hybrid thought-up offense or defense.
- 50:57SPEAKER_07: Um Campbell's still an old ball coach from Ohio.
- 51:00SPEAKER_07: I I don't think that um that he worries a whole lot about trying to find new schemes to defending against uh a running back.
- 51:07SPEAKER_07: I think that um I think that him and John Haycock have a very good understanding of kind of what it takes to defend um against the run.
- 51:17SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 51:17SPEAKER_06: So I mean I think this is a good segue to go ahead and take us into why you think uh Iowa store how Iowa State beats Texas Tech and uh as and also to how Texas Tech beats Iowa State.
- 51:30SPEAKER_06: What do you what do you think about that?
- 51:31SPEAKER_06: What what do you see Saturday for either of those outcomes?
- 51:34SPEAKER_07: Well, I think there's i i i if iowa state wins, it's because they just have ballers on both sides of the ball.
- 51:41SPEAKER_07: Um this is your five of Matt Campbell's offense at Iowa State, his defense at Iowa State.
- 51:47SPEAKER_07: He has some very good playmakers in Brees Hall in particular, but then obviously in Brock Purdy.
- 51:55SPEAKER_07: Uh tight end Charlie Kohlar.
- 51:58SPEAKER_07: Um we have a new wide receiver, Xavier Hutchinson.
- 52:01SPEAKER_07: Um, and I'm not quite sure if Tariq Milton's gonna play this week, but um, these are skill players that we're kind of not necessarily used to having at Iowa State, especially in some of these previous eras that I was discussing.
- 52:13SPEAKER_07: Um we just got ballers on the field, and I really think that as you saw this last weekend, I mean we were the better team than Oklahoma on both sides of the ball, and it really didn't seem like a fluky, upset type win.
- 52:25SPEAKER_07: We just beat them.
- 52:26SPEAKER_07: And I think I think Iowa State wins if there's not a massive letdown or unless there's a really strong showing by Texas Tech.
- 52:36SPEAKER_07: On that other hand, then tech wins if they put things together.
- 52:41SPEAKER_07: Um there were a lot of good things, and there's a lot of boneheaded things that I saw in that Texas game and in that K-State game, where there was a lot of good things that I saw out of players, but I didn't I there there wasn't five or six good things in a row to get momentum going down, you know, in a good direction.
- 53:02SPEAKER_07: Um I don't we lost we lost to Texas once like that in 2014 where everything was seemed to be going right.
- 53:09SPEAKER_07: It was a shootout type game, but just didn't have the firepower.
- 53:13SPEAKER_07: So I I mean I I I know how that feels.
- 53:15SPEAKER_07: And then I saw kind of how Deuce Hogan kind of tore you guys up against Kansas State.
- 53:22SPEAKER_07: Um I I I do think that Texas Tech can win if Iowa State doesn't focus.
- 53:33SPEAKER_07: I think that the talent on the field for the last couple years has been in Iowa State's favor, which is honestly probably the first time in our history um where we're legitimately outmanning teams within our league, which um credit to our coaching staff.
- 53:49SPEAKER_07: I don't the their development of talent has been phenomenal because it's not like we're world beaters on the recruiting trail, but that also goes back to just knowing who we are, knowing what we can build um you know within our building.
- 54:01SPEAKER_07: But I won't go on that tangent.
- 54:03SPEAKER_07: Um there there's a lot there's still a lot of weapons on Texas Tech.
- 54:06SPEAKER_07: There's there's good wide receivers.
- 54:08SPEAKER_07: I think you you you've mentioned that you're you're trying to do a balanced attack with the with the run game too.
- 54:13SPEAKER_07: I mean I th I think Tech's just at a point now they're in year two of a coach and stuff just kind of has to start getting put together.
- 54:21SPEAKER_07: And you've had two games where you looked good at spots and then looked unprepared in others.
- 54:29SPEAKER_07: And I think if they put a whole game together, I think that there's a chance they could, but I'd feel a lot better for tech if the game was in Lubbock.
- 54:38SPEAKER_07: Since it's in Ames, I feel like um most likely Iowa State will come out with a win of some regard 10 points or something like that.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think I I I that's been the case with Texas Tech the past, at least since we've been uh fans of the Red Raiders, is they can't put a full game together.
- 54:54SPEAKER_03: The offense has a great game, the defense sucks, the defense puts up a great showing, the offense sucks.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: And so uh we're we're in agreement on that.
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: I I think uh we haven't we have yet to see we didn't see that all through the Kingsbury era.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: We hope it comes during the Matt Wells era.
- 55:10SPEAKER_03: Uh like you said, we're only in year two, so um this is kind of when you have to start putting that kind of stuff together.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: But um I I we're going in with a with a wonky quarterback situation.
- 55:22SPEAKER_03: We don't know whether Alan Bowman's gonna go in and start.
- 55:24SPEAKER_03: He was obvious he was hurt last week against K-State.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: Uh Columbi, our our backup who came in, looked solid.
- 55:31SPEAKER_03: Uh I thought he looked comfortable in the pocket.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: He's a senior, so he's he has the experience.
- 55:35SPEAKER_03: He knows uh Matt Wells' system.
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: He was previously at Utah State with Wells and with Coach Yost.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: And so um how does that how do you prepare for a week when you don't really know who's coming in at quarterback?
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: Because they're two really completely different kind of quarterbacks going into this game.
- 55:53SPEAKER_07: I mean, this is the stuff that um Iowa State's actually been able to get some wins doing.
- 55:58SPEAKER_07: Um if you guys remember, uh we we we had a quarterback uh suspended in 2017 and then uh a walk-on went into Norman and won.
- 56:06SPEAKER_07: So this is kind of the stuff that kind of creates nightmares for coaches who have a team coming in with you know not necessarily a whole lot of film on.
- 56:14SPEAKER_07: And you know, honestly, if if Bowman's not playing, which I don't know what his um He's day-to-day, he's day-to-day right now.
- 56:23SPEAKER_07: You you usually when the players day to day and they're playing Iowa State, they're usually available to play and they usually have a lights out game against us.
- 56:31SPEAKER_07: That's usually just how it works.
- 56:33SPEAKER_07: Um but you know, when when you when you when you gotta prepare against a quarterback who you've never seen, you just have to just dig into your fundamentals, just know who you are.
- 56:43SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's I I say that a lot because it we just whenever I think about Matt Campbell's teams, I just that's just how I outside of special team blunders, I just see a very a very solid football team on both sides of the ball.
- 56:55SPEAKER_07: Um that I th I I just think they're ready if if whoever gets a snap.
- 57:02SPEAKER_07: But now, like I said though, I mean oh man.
- 57:05SPEAKER_07: Against TCU, uh Duggan didn't play in the first half, and we absolutely made that quarterback's life a nightmare in that first half.
- 57:13SPEAKER_07: So then uh Duggan comes in, which actually he's from the town that I live in now.
- 57:19SPEAKER_07: Um he honestly looked really good.
- 57:23SPEAKER_07: And I think that I would say probably got lucky to get out of there with a win that we only only played him in that first half.
- 57:29SPEAKER_07: And I think what we saw Saturday in Austin was that TCU is pretty good, so you you just gotta prepare for it.
- 57:37SPEAKER_07: I I I I don't necessarily think you gotta change a whole lot.
- 57:40SPEAKER_07: I mean, obviously there's certain adjustments with certain players, but you know, we've I guess we've been bitten before.
- 57:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 57:48SPEAKER_07: It's actually more if there's an injured player coming back who has a miraculous recovery and you know becomes a Heisman candidate overnight.
- 57:58SPEAKER_03: It seems to have it happens to us too.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: It seems like everybody just goes off against us.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: I know I have we had a few nightmare games.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: Uh Alan Lazard still haunts my nightmares.
- 58:08SPEAKER_07: Um was that the 16 game?
- 58:09SPEAKER_03: Or was that every game if you have to find a receiver that just goes off and catches 200 yards and three touchdowns against us?
- 58:19SPEAKER_03: Um, but I you know, we talked about uh the quarterbacks and and how that's kind of unknown going into this game.
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: What is known is Iowa State's what seems like star running back Brees Hall.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: Did this dude just come out of nowhere?
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: Did y'all expect him to be as dynamic and as good as he's been this year?
- 58:36SPEAKER_07: He was a very highly titled recruit out of Wichita, and um usually really good running backs out of Wichita wind up in Norman, actually, which is kind of a weird pipeline there.
- 58:46SPEAKER_07: Um if not, they're they're in Manhattan.
- 58:48SPEAKER_07: So the fact that we were able to get him was a phenomenal get for this program.
- 58:52SPEAKER_07: He is an absolute stud.
- 58:55SPEAKER_07: He has honestly, uh I'm sure many of you guys remember David Montgomery.
- 59:01SPEAKER_07: He was a uh very highly touted running back out of Iowa State who's now um the running back for the Chicago Bears.
- 59:09SPEAKER_07: Um cut from the same cloth as Kareem Hunt, who Matt Campbell coached at Toledo.
- 59:14SPEAKER_07: Brees Hall in most metrics seems to be ahead of schedule of what David Montgomery's development was at this stage in his career.
- 59:24SPEAKER_07: So um slightly different body type, but he he he's just an absolute stud.
- 59:28SPEAKER_07: And the way that he was able to stay on his feet after being tackled or after being tripped for extra 10 yards here, five yards here during that Oklahoma game was kind of incredible.
- 59:41SPEAKER_07: And I I I I really think that this is his offense moving forward, even though even though Brock Purdy is a very dynamic player, I think that no matter what you prepare for for what Purdy has going on, you just have to keep your eye on Brees Hall because he's just good.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_07: And you know, he can he can run off you know a long play, you know, on a given moment.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_07: So I've been I've been very I've been very pleased with him.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_06: That's that's scary for us.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_06: We're historically awful against the run, so it just kind of brings back bad memories.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's uh it hasn't been the worst part about the defense this season, but um definitely a little scary guy there.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_06: What were you gonna say, Steven?
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_03: Um just kind of going to the the Louisiana game earlier in the year, obviously took took the loss there.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_03: Um I know you were missing a few key guys.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_03: Uh Kohler was was missing that game, but what what's the difference?
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: What have they cleaned up since that game?
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_07: Special teams.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_07: Uh they scored 14 points on uh kickoff or punt returns.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_07: I think they're both kickoff returns.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_07: So I'm trying to forget the game, but yeah, no, it was.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_07: Um this is like like I said a couple minutes ago, on the offensive and the defensive side of the ball, we are fundamentally sound as a football program.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_07: The stain on Matt Campbell's tenure at Iowa State has been special teams.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_07: And last year, if you guys remember um playing against Kansas State, um Youngblood, I think his name is Josh Youngblood.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_07: I remember he opened up the game with a kickoff return against us.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_07: So then we played Louisiana.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_07: I don't know what what was in their water.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_07: They they they they housed two of those.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_07: And um they scored kind of a garbage touchdown late.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_07: It was a 24-14 game in the fourth throughout the fourth quarter, just a real stingy, not a real fun game to watch.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_07: And then but 14 of those points were on those two kickoff returns.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_07: So I think that I think it's a different game if that doesn't happen.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_07: But also Kohlar was out in that game and he's he's a top tight end in the league, so naturally when you lose your weapons like that, um I think I think I think Purdy was kind of trying to find his way without without having him as a target.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_07: And uh he really didn't run in that game either, which when you have that third option of the quarterback being able to run, I think that this this team goes from being a ho-home team to being a team with legitimate versatility on offense.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_07: And uh that was kind of the postmortem on that game.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_07: It was not fun to watch, but uh I've I've I've learned not to fret too many things this year.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_07: Everything's just a little bit different, and it seems it seems like a lot of the things that cursed us in that game did have seemed to get fixed.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_07: And we we wound up uh returning a kickoff for like, I mean, back to the five-yard line against Oklahoma, and that switched kind of in our favor, so maybe God still loves us.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, those kind of plays can completely swing the momentum.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, we had yeah, just like last game when we were playing Kansas State, we just took the lead 21, I mean 21 uh 14, I believe, or 21 whatever.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_03: Um, and automatically they go and get a 70-yard play right down the pile.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's it's just a killer.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_03: And we've had a few punts blocked this year already, so that's concerning uh on the Texas Tech end.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_03: But um kind of talking, we haven't talked a lot about Brock Purdy.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_03: He came into the year going being kind of a Heisman.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know if he was a dark horse or if he was like a legitimate candidate.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_03: Um, and he hasn't, I don't know if he's quite met expectations yet.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_03: He's obviously got two solid wins under his belt, but he has has he been uh what y'all thought he was gonna be this going into the year?
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_07: You know, when you look at his stats, yeah.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_07: Um he he he he put up numbers in that TCU game that were really good, but uh Sports Center not top ten, I think he was number two or number one.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_07: Uh he he he just threw a ball up in the air like pretty much just directly in the hands of a receiver or uh defender for TCU that was a touchdown.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_07: I mean, it was one of the most bone-headed plays I've ever seen in football, and I've seen some bad stuff.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_07: Um but his stat lines are always good.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_07: I mean, he's always prone to the turnover.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_07: Um in those we've lost a couple games, I think, where I think he had a turnover that kind of spooked him, and I think we kind of lose him after that.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_07: But even in some of these games where he just looks off, you look down at the stat sheet and he still has 200 yards passing and you know 40 yards rushing or something like that.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_07: So it's like I I don't know, I don't know if we've maybe just built him up too much, but um his his stats are still quite good for a quarterback, especially when uh you know, I I do feel like we have uh an offense that's more geared towards Brees Hall.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I think that's the difference too, is because you know Purdy hasn't had to do so much now that he's got this superstar running back who looks like Adrian Peterson out there.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, so um but yeah, I think uh uh we we know a lot about that too because our our quarterbacks always put extreme stats.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you don't look at the amount of passes our quarterbacks actually throw a game, you know, we're putting up 400, 500 yards a game pretty easily.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_03: And so you look at that and you're like, oh well, this quarterback's pretty good.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_03: Well, that doesn't necessarily when you're throwing it 50 something times a game, you know, what you're gonna get those stats anyway.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I like I like Purdy's game.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_03: I like his ability to to scramble.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_03: Uh he is very good on the run uh when he gets in space out there, so he's gonna be somebody to look out for.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_06: But um Texas Tech has to walk into Ames.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_06: How has no one said this yet?
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_06: We have to go to Ames and Brocktober.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_06: How has no one said Brocktober yet?
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_06: It's been like 20 minutes.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_07: I'm just glad that Brocktober is a uh month that is celebrated in Texas as well as Iowa.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_07: I'm I'm glad that you brought it up.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_07: It may not be celebrated Saturday, Travis.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_06: It's it's not celebrated, but it's known.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_06: Well, we and we're very happy with the sooner when yes.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_06: That that's a good Brocktober.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_06: We we don't know about this Broctober, Travis.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_07: You know, I uh I I I don't know really know what to say except uh you know the we we we have had just does of September's as a program under Campbell.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_07: Special teams in September.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_07: I guess those are the two S's that are just yeah for us.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_06: I think that's uh also I'm gonna say segue again.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_06: I think this is a good segue into my other question.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_06: Um uh Matt Campbell's been nothing short but awesome in Iowa State, you know, it's very, very envious of what he's done there.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_06: Uh a lot of programs would would die for that.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_06: I know we would.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_06: Um and so with what he's built there, what would you say the expectations are for Matt Campbell going forward?
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_06: Like what are what is what's the feeling within the Iowa State fan base?
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_06: Like what's a what's a great season, what's a disappointing season at this point?
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_06: Now the culture has shifted and the expectations have risen under Matt Campbell.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_07: Well, I think the expectation first was that he was just gonna leave.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_07: And uh he's turned down Arkansas, Tennessee, and Florida State, and those are decent programs.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_07: So I think getting that expectation at least out of the forefront has been um just such a dark cloud getting shoved aside finally for the program because it just seems like whenever something bad good happens for us finally it's short-lived.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_07: Um when I compare Matt Campbell's career to some other coaches who built programs in similar fashions, um, he's still quite new in this.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_07: I mean, when you I mean when you look at some of these coaches who truly built programs at schools, your Bill Snyder's your Hayden Fry's, your Gary Pinkles, um, even your Mike Leeches.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_07: I mean, it you gotta build it up over time.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_07: And I think that I think his first his first benchmark, which in 2017 he did, was to make a bowl game again.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_07: And then now we're at the point where we went seven and six last year, and that was disappointing.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_07: Which when I was in college, I know like I said, we weren't bad when I was in college, but we weren't world beaters.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_07: Um seven-six was a really good year when I was in college.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_07: Now I think that depending on who's on the roster, I mean I think that if like let let's say he's our coach five years from now on the trajectory he's on.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_07: I think I I I I do think a good a good year can have a double-digit win year, while a down year could still have a floor of bull eligibility, which is something that's just kind of neat to think about as someone who's kind of been a student of Iowa State football history, which it's not a fun course to take.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_07: Um it's I mean with with this year, I'm I'm kind of at the point where I feel like anybody can add two to their win totals and one to their loss totals just to assume what your non-con could have been, or prorate it, you know, uh what's your win percentage and what would, you know, what what would a what would a nine and three uh team's percentage be versus what ours is, stuff like that.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_07: But I mean, I I I do think that this is a program that can if he stays and if he continues on this trajectory of recruiting the way he does, developing players the way he does, um, coaching the way he does.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_07: I I I I don't see it as a program that's gonna have a whole lot of really down years.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_07: I don't think that he's not gonna have to have rebuilding years if he is in this for the long haul.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_07: I think we've seen programs with far better recruiting and far better facilities and far better just situations still have to have rebuilding years.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_07: So I I don't I'm I I know that we are never gonna be immune to that, no matter whether Campbell's our coach or Sabin's our coach or you're our coach.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_07: You know, I I I think that you know, I think that's just kind of part of you know how how that cookie crumbles a little bit.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_07: But right now, I I mean it it it just it still seems upward.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_06: So to get back to the uh the Texas Tech Iowa State game, that's what we're here for.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_06: Um, do you have do you have a score prediction for that game?
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_07: I've kind of gone back and forth on this one.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_07: I I we haven't really been in shootouts in the series under these two.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_07: Um and based on what I saw in Manhattan, um Iowa State does seem pretty similar to Kansas State to me based on what the personnel looks like and stuff like that, the coaching styles.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_07: So Mac Hampbell's not gonna go out here guns blazing in that game.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_07: I think we just know that.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_07: Um I do think that there's there's a sizable advantage there, um assuming that Iowa State doesn't have a massive hangover from Oklahoma, which is very likely to have.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_07: Luckily, the game's at home with fans.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_07: So um last year's game was 34-24, I think something kind of similar to that.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_07: You know, maybe uh maybe a 37-23 kind of a thing.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_07: So if if if if Texas Tech wins, they turn they turn the ball over on Brock Purdy.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_07: Um and uh they they get some good quarterback play from whoever that is.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_07: Um that's that's a scenario where um maybe that score flips, but um I think that I I I I don't like coming on here predicting, you know, bad things for people I like, but um, you know, it's just one of those things where I think that Iowa State's just in year five of a program with a solid with a solid team and a solid coach, and things are just seem to kind of be rolling right now, even despite the Louisiana loss.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_07: And I think that I think the Texas Tech is just still showing that they're in year two of a new system.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_07: So um I'm I'm I'm glad this game's not in Lubbock, I'll say that much.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_07: Um But that's not to say that you know anything can happen, you know.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_07: I I'm not I'm not chalking up anything as a win just yet.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what what do you got?
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_05: What do you what do you think for this week?
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_06: Uh man, I don't I just I don't have a whole lot of hope.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_06: I just I thought winning at Kansas State would be the right step in the right direction to start giving getting more hope for these games.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_06: But for uh for the treasured listeners, I'm gonna try to give as much optimism as I can, but I can't give a W in this game.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_06: I'm going something like 24 to 42.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_06: Iowa State.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_06: Iowa State, yeah.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean I'm gonna go ultra optimist here, and I'm gonna say we go into Ames and switch this season around.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_03: And so I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go 34-28.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm gonna say.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech wins, uh, Travis.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_03: That's probably not gonna happen, but hey, we're optimistic here on the talk and tech podcast.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_06: Give us your score, Travis.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_06: Let's hear it, homie.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_03: 37-23.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_03: 37-23 clones, says Travis.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_03: Well, we'll see.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_03: It should be a fun game.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_03: These games are usually pretty fun.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_03: I I I love that Iowa State's in the Big 12.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, they're a fun team to have in the conference.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, if we just we as as biased tech fans, we hope uh we can finally put it together this game.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_03: Uh Iowa State's a toughie, though.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_06: First sure, and I think that's a great segue.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_06: So we're talking about how fun this these games are.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_06: Travis, what is your favorite Texas Tech versus the Iowa State Coronado's memory?
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_06: What hit us, hit us?
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_06: What is it?
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_07: You know, I had fun looking back at these um because they're you know, our our series is so short in terms of hit historical perspective, you know, and in most leagues you have these rivalries where schools have like a 50 to 44, you know, type record.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_07: But so I mean, I was actually able to go back and you know look at the highlights from probably half of the games we've ever played, which which sounds which is still a decent amount, but really not that many.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_07: Um there's obviously the Seneca run game where uh I think he ran like 140 yards for a 15-yard gain.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_07: Um that was that was something.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_07: Um in 2010 was uh was uh 52 to 38 win where uh tech tried to kick a um onside kick, which we just returned for a touchdown, which was just kind of a crazy thing.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_07: And then there was sounds about right.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_07: Then there was this yeah, time Tommy Tubberville, that didn't happen in Lubbock, right?
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, no, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_03: This is the first time.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_07: And then uh and then there was a 66 to 10 game, which honestly that game was when a lot of Iowa State fans were just like, oh, okay.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_07: Because there was no reason for at that point we were oh god, we were two and eight going to that game, I think.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_07: And there wasn't a whole lot of reason for any football team to really care that much.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_07: It was cold, it was nasty.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_07: But, you know, they knocked Mahomes out for I think two or three play two or three series in that first half, and just Texas Tech just fell apart, and Iowa State won 66 to 10, and that was just a that is y'all's favorite game.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_06: I swear anytime Patrick Mahomes is ever brought up on Twitter, there's a cyclone in the replies talking about that game.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_07: And I wish that that wasn't my favorite because that wound up being a three-and-nine team.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_07: But I think but that was that was a game where I think we realized just kind of what we had, and that even though we took a lot of lumps that year, I mean, we took a lot of them.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_07: Um we only lost Oklahoma at home by 10 that year, which usually we would lose to Oklahoma by 44 at home.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_07: Um you know, and then uh there was a lot of there was just a lot of things building up.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_07: So that was kind of the game where okay, clone fans, just chill.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_07: Let's enjoy this offseason because I think Iowa State's gonna look a little different in 2017.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_07: And then 2017 came around and it looked really good.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_07: And I think that I think that the showing there in that game is really kind of what was our first glimpse of hope with him.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_07: So that's gonna have to be my favorite.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_07: But man, that that Seneca run, I I mean, there there's a map of it in the wingstop in Ames because Seneca Wallace owns it.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_07: And uh I I mean I think have you guys seen that play?
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_07: I mean, it's just absolutely phenomenal.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that dude was electric.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_07: If I was a coach, I would have been absolutely curious.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_07: You know, it's like when uh it's like one of the players shoot a bunch of really, really dumb threes making them like, no, no, no, yes! You know, that's exactly what that play was, except for it was like taking nine stupid threes in one play.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_07: Where he legitimately all over the place.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_07: Uh it was like Wallace is looking, pumping, looks, sees nothing, goes right, goes left, and like he he almost got tackled like four or five times in that game.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_07: I mean, it was I'll have to tweet out the diagram of it, because that was something I wasn't old enough, I don't think, to truly enjoy that.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_07: Um so that's probably why it's not my favorite.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_07: But and then obviously so that's that's an honorable mention, and then obviously that 52 to 38 game was that was just neat.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_07: That was probably the first time that Iowa State had ever won a shootout.
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_07: We just at that point in time we never had offenses that could ever get anything to click.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_07: So the fact that um so that was a good one too.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_07: I'm sure that a lot of y'all don't want to remember that.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that that Seneca play, it reminds me of like Steph Curry when he first got on the scene and was starting to do the things that he was doing where he was just shooting insane threes, you know, stepbacks, you know, some twist or whatever, coming off a screen, getting fouled, four-point play.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_03: That that's what that play reminds me of.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, man, they they've they've had a lot of good moments against tech recently, uh, or in the recent history, I should say.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_03: Uh Tristan, why don't you bring it around for the for the tech listeners and bring up your favorite moment from the Iowa State, Texas Tech Series?
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_06: You know, if if this was uh if we were previewing uh basketball, it would be a basketball game.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_06: Because the first uh court rush we ever did as students was against Iowa State in 2014.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_06: Um uh under uh Tommy Tupperville.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_06: Tommy Tupperville.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_06: It is not Tommy Tupperville.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_06: We don't know that's not a guy.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_06: But honestly, Steven and I went to Texas Tech during a horrendous time for football.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_06: Patrick Mahomes was the highlight.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_06: There's only a few games we can look back on and enjoy.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_06: Um honestly, I'm gonna have to go with uh uh our freshman year, uh, whenever we beat Iowa State um in Ames.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_06: Because that was I remember that was that was like one of the few wins we got that entire season.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_07: And as a freshman called in 2014?
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah, in 2014.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_07: Your highlight of Iowa State, Texas was beating a two and ten Iowa State team.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_06: I mean, uh dude, uh honestly, it's that's how bad it that that's how bad it was because our season was awful too.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_06: We won what five games that year?
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_06: Four games, four games, four games.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_06: So see, that's that's where we were at.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_06: And so that's that has to be mine um because that was our first win, one of our first Big 12 wins as a student, because our student senior was just nothing but pain and suffering.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_03: And if you thought that was sad, my moment is a Texas Tech loss.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_03: And it's for personal reasons.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_03: In 2017, Iowa State came to Lubbock and crushed Nick Shimonek and company.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_03: We only scored like three put three points or 10 points or something.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_03: 13.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_03: 13.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_03: It was horrible.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was horrible.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_03: It was a horrible game.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_03: But me, I was interning for a local news station at the time in Lubbock, uh, and I actually got to go on the field for that game and shoot video for that game.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_03: And so I was that was the first time being on the field during a game day.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_03: It was a really cool experience.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_03: I had a fun time.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_03: That was my favorite moment that involved Iowa State, I guess I'm gonna have to say.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_03: The game sucked, but it was cool to be right on the field, you know, that whole time and and get to see uh the action right up close.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, because if you've ever been on a field, you know, during uh an NFL, college, whatever, football, big time football game, it's a really cool experience.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_03: So uh that's my favorite moment.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_03: But all my all my favorite Iowa State Texas Tech moments come with basketball, and uh that's just that's just how it's gonna that's just how it's gonna be.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, I um I'm I miss the I miss having a consistently good basketball team.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_07: We uh we struggled a little with that last year quite a bit.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's actually kind of it's actually kind of interesting because you've swapped Yeah, we've completely swapped with basketball and football.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_03: I mean during our time there, Iowa State has kind of gone now down in the gutter in basketball, but their football program has risen astronomically, and we I mean I it's the exact same with our basketball program rising in our images.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's insane.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_07: It's it's kind of a different I mean it's it's it it's kind of funny, but I mean in basketball, you know, like when I talk about Matt Campbell building a solid foundation, like that thing is solid, like just the recruiting, the player development, all that in basketball.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_07: Steve Prome adopted uh of a good recruiting tactic in which he was getting some really, really good recruits.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_07: The problem is they weren't staying, they were good enough to go pro and they got hurt.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_07: And and so last year, so we had um Talen Horton Tucker, who played for the Lakers.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_07: I guess he's still playing for the Lakers.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, because they're still in the in the finals.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_07: Um we had um Tyrese Halliburton, who just went pro.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_07: Um we had Lyndell Wigginton, who wound up playing for the Iowa Wolves in the G League.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_07: Like, come on, dude, you could have stayed, you know.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_07: Um I think that I mean last so last year we went 12 and 20 in basketball and we had uh it it it just seemed like there was a piece or two missing the whole year, and it it really showed and it it shows that you gotta build it right at a school like ours.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_07: You know, I love Texas, Ames, Iowa.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_07: I don't care what the sport is, they're not the sexiest places, they have the best people, but it's just a little harder to win there, and you can't take shortcuts.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_07: You just have to commit to what you're doing and be solid.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_07: And I think there's a guy who's, you know, sitting at the United Supermarkets arena right now who uh has a pretty solid game plan.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_07: I mean, they're probably going balls to the wall right now, you know.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_07: Um but I do think that Iowa State basketball does make a little bit of a rebound this year.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_07: I think that there's some good pieces there, and I think it I think those pieces fit Steve Prom a little better.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_07: Um which I would love to coach a bunch of five-star, four-star recruits.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_07: But here's the thing though, there's the downfall with that, like I just said, and I think that I think that Chris Beard's been really smart with the players he's added and been able to get that, you know, when you do plug and play, you just gotta make sure you gotta plan for, you know, when your players get plugged by something else, whether it be the league or transfers or things like that.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_03: So yeah, and that's been I think that's been Beard's main thing is he he likes to he went on uh John Rossing's podcast recently, uh, and he basically said he likes to have the experience, guys.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_03: That's why he's going after so many grad transfers.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_03: To have that senior leadership on your team really makes your program.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, you uh unless you're Coach Cal at Kentucky or or Chesetsky at Duke, I mean, you can't just play a bunch of freshmen and and be successful.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_03: No other program has really succeeded with that except for those blue bloods.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_03: So uh but Iowa State has had, I mean, they've had a couple down years in basketball, but like you said, the the the talents there uh with guy and Halliburton's probably gonna be uh I'd imagine a top seven pick in the draft this season.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_03: Uh I'd love it.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_03: I'd love it if he fell to all 11 and went to my Spurs, man.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_03: I uh he seems like a Spurs guy, but uh um yeah, once you get past that wonky jump shot he's got, he's he's a fantastic player.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_07: I think it's beautiful.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_03: But yeah, you we I always love players that shoot weird, that play for us, especially if they're lights out.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_07: But uh you would have been a big fan of uh Travis in uh sixth grade middle school basketball.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah?
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_03: You're you're a superstar, superstar Travis out here.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_07: I made uh I mean I had the weird shot, but I think I made two of them all year.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_03: Hey man, that's two more than a lot of other people.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_03: So Tristan.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_03: Like Tristan, Tristan, this is the Tristan's the worst basketball player I've ever seen in my life.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's not even close.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_06: Basketball and volleyball are not my sports.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_06: Done, yeah.
- 1:24:25SPEAKER_06: Anything that evolves.
- 1:24:26SPEAKER_07: That requires some coordination.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_07: Holy cow.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, stand volleyball.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_03: We we we saw him uh Tristan embarrassed a couple times.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_03: Stan volleyball, I get better with the more I drink.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_03: I think that's the case with a lot of sports, to be honest.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_07: There's like a chemical balance there that just it's just needed for um premier volleyball play.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_03: It's just it's it's it's a sense of confidence.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_03: Confidence goes a f a long way, man.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_03: And once you have that liquid confidence in you, you know, you just go nuts.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_07: Is that your weekly dating advice too?
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_03: That's yeah, that's my that's my that's not weekly dating advice.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_03: That is my dating advice.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_03: So um, well, man, this has been really cool.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_03: Uh this I every week on the Talking Tech Pod, we do a kind of a song of the week segment uh just for our listeners out there to get them after they listen to this podcast, get them some solid tunes that they may not have heard of before, or maybe they have heard, but we just like.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_03: So uh Travis, why don't you give us your song of the week?
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_07: You know, I I I I don't really have a lot of music tastes that are like eclectic per se.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_07: But today, I don't know if you guys saw this on my Twitter, I was just kind of getting sad about not having full football stadium.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_07: So I was kind of going through um different full stadiums just singing songs in unison and stuff like that.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_07: And I'm just like, oh my god, let's get this pandemic over.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_07: And I kept coming back to just an oldie but goody, um Tom Petties.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_07: I won't back down.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_07: I think that that's I think that's appropriate for Texas Tech after this week.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_07: Um back down, but don't start don't start your uh don't start that until after this game, okay.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_06: No worries, we've already done plenty of of that.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_06: So we've already done plenty of backing down for a few years now.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_06: Someone's saying a decade.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_03: Some might say.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_03: Well, that's cool.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Tom Petty, that's a classic uh rest in peace.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_03: Rest in peace.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_03: Uh and rest in peace to Eddie Van Halen as well.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_03: He passed today.
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_07: That was that was that was tough to hear.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_07: But uh when uh when Tom Petty died, um, the University of Florida, which he's from Gainesville, that whole stadium sang that song in unison perfectly.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_03: That was beautiful.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_03: That was that was one of the coolest sports moments I've ever I've ever seen.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_07: So um we have a very, very, very approachable athletic director.
- 1:27:09SPEAKER_07: And I actually shot Jamie Pollard an email and I was like, Jamie, can you guys play Won't Back Down in the at the end of the third quarter?
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_07: Because we were playing Sweet Carolina, and that is not the song to play before a game is over.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_07: Um we always refer to that as our curse.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_07: Whenever they'd play that song too early, we'd then choke games away.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_07: So we started playing that song, and it actually wound up being um something they played for the rest of the year.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_07: So I kind of feel like I uh started that.
- 1:27:32SPEAKER_03: So but uh there's a few of those jams, it's there's a few of those stadium jams.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_03: You know, I put I put that in Gainesville, Tom Petty in Gainesville, and then uh Neck at LSU and they play that.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_03: It's nuts, dude.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_03: Uh not no, not stay for work, but it's absolutely uh a hype up song, and everybody gets insane at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_07: If you need another uh good uh feel good one, um the entire Wisconsin student section sings um Build me up buttercup.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_07: And you think you the your your faces right now are just like, what?
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_07: And then you'll watch this and you'll be like, oh my god.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_07: Literally, there's different sections singing different parts of it.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_07: It is a spectacle in college football.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_07: That's awesome.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_07: And that's also one of the best college towns, best football environments you could ever go to.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_07: So uh you know, um check that one out too.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_07: That's just some sometimes I think part of the reason why college football is so great, other than you know, getting to talk on a great podcast, is that there's just so many weird yet awesome traditions throughout college football.
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_07: And you know, that at uh Wisconsin or you know, neck at LSU or um you know KU tearing down the goalposts when I get a first down, you know.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_07: Um you know, I mean these these things just truly bring us together as football fans.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_07: And right now we don't have a lot of things to uh unite over.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_07: So um these the the you know getting to talk college football for an hour is definitely a treat in these times, right, that we're living in right now.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_06: For sure, man.
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_06: It's the pageantry, it's the tradition, it's the passion.
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_06: That just makes college sports so dang fun.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_06: It's just it makes college sports that much different from professional sports, and that's what's so cool about it.
- 1:29:17SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 1:29:17SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_03: The passions unmatched.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_03: But uh, Tristan, why don't you go ahead and give me your song of the week?
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna do a uh an honorary one from a Lubbock legend, Mac Davis.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_06: Uh he recently passed away in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_06: And so today I'm gonna leave the listeners with Texas in my rear view mirror.
- 1:29:37SPEAKER_06: And uh it's a story about uh leaving Lubbock, Texas, uh, you know, getting out of your hometown, but realizing uh everything that's important in life is there in the end.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_06: So um it's a great song, and it's it's it's has a great ending because it's all about dying there and being buried in Lubbock.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_06: So it's uh it's very appropriate one to give you all tonight, and uh it's it's a it's a great song as well.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_00: Happiness was love of Texas and my rearview mirror.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_00: My mama kept calling me home, but I just did not want to kill.
- 1:30:11SPEAKER_00: And the vision was getting clearer in my dream.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_03: A lot of legends recently passing.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's it's sad, but uh yeah, that's a great song of the week, obviously.
- 1:30:23SPEAKER_03: Mac Davis, a Lubbock legend.
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_03: Um that's a that's a good good sentiment for him, Tristan.
- 1:30:29SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_03: What about you, Steve?
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_03: What we got for you, homie?
- 1:30:32SPEAKER_03: Uh man, you know, I was I was kind of going back and forth on a few on a few, but I I ended up on uh Blue Side of the Mountain by the Steel Drivers.
- 1:30:42SPEAKER_03: That uh if you have not heard of the Steel Drivers, it is Chris Stableton's uh former band.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_03: And so he's he's singing on it, and it's just it's his voice.
- 1:30:51SPEAKER_03: He Chris Stableton's one of my favorite artists, just in general.
- 1:30:54SPEAKER_03: Uh he's his voice is so real and so raw, and it really comes out in this song.
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_03: Um just gritty.
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_03: I I mean I I love I love Chris Stableton.
- 1:31:04SPEAKER_03: I love his solo stuff.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_03: I love if you haven't if you haven't uh checked out his steel driver stuff, you need to.
- 1:31:09SPEAKER_03: But uh I think he redid this song recently on one of his newer albums, but uh the steel driver's version is really is really good.
- 1:31:29SPEAKER_06: All right, y'all.
- 1:31:31SPEAKER_06: So I think this was a great uh Texas Tech Red Raider versus the Iowa State Cyclone podcast here.
- 1:31:37SPEAKER_06: Thank you so much, Travis, for coming on, man.
- 1:31:40SPEAKER_06: Do you think there's anything else you'd like to leave with the listeners before we let you go?
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_07: You know, not a whole lot.
- 1:31:46SPEAKER_07: Um I I hope to see a lot of you in about eight months for the College World Series in Omaha.
- 1:31:55SPEAKER_07: I live on the Iowa side of the Omaha metro area, and um that is an event that I dearly missed this year.
- 1:32:05SPEAKER_07: And yeah, I've had a I've had a chance to meet many many uh tech fans there, and um they're not awful like Arkansas fans, so thank you.
- 1:32:15SPEAKER_03: Arkansas baseball fans are up there for like the worst fans ever.
- 1:32:19SPEAKER_07: Like they stink.
- 1:32:20SPEAKER_07: LSU fans are phenomenal, and then Arkansas fans are just I just don't know what to say.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_03: It's because that's the only thing they have left is baseball.
- 1:32:34SPEAKER_03: They stink at everything else.
- 1:32:36SPEAKER_03: So that's that's the only thing they have left.
- 1:32:38SPEAKER_03: But yeah, man, that's been a that's been a dr a want of mine, uh bucket list to go up there when tech's up there for the college world series.
- 1:32:44SPEAKER_06: So Steve and I will have to do a talking tech up there.
- 1:32:47SPEAKER_06: That's that's what I'm saying.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_06: Hey Travis, can I leave you uh with a little something to uh bring up bring about in Omaha Metro area?
- 1:32:54SPEAKER_06: I would like to uh tell you that Nebraska's worst loss in football history is to your Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2004, 70 to 10 in Nebraska.
- 1:33:04SPEAKER_06: Go tell your friends, spread the word.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_06: We weren't bad all the time.
- 1:33:09SPEAKER_06: 2004.
- 1:33:10SPEAKER_06: 2004.
- 1:33:11SPEAKER_06: Wreck them tech, baby.
- 1:33:13SPEAKER_03: Great year, great year.
- 1:33:16SPEAKER_07: I think people still require therapy when the name Bill Callahan comes up in Omaha, Nebraska.
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_07: Um, I think that uh that name is actually illegal to stay in Lincoln.
- 1:33:26SPEAKER_07: So yeah.
- 1:33:28SPEAKER_07: Man.
- 1:33:29SPEAKER_03: Well, right on Travis.
- 1:33:30SPEAKER_03: Well, man, what's your uh what's your plug?
- 1:33:32SPEAKER_03: What's your Twitter?
- 1:33:33SPEAKER_07: Uh my Twitter right now is at Travis Clones.
- 1:33:37SPEAKER_07: There's no spaces, no uppercase, lowercase games.
- 1:33:41SPEAKER_07: Um I'm kind of a mess on Twitter, so uh beware.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_03: Beware.
- 1:33:47SPEAKER_03: Well, man, we really appreciate you coming on, man.
- 1:33:49SPEAKER_03: This has been a really fun conversation.
- 1:33:51SPEAKER_07: For sure.
- 1:33:52SPEAKER_07: Thanks for having me, and uh yeah, hopefully we see you guys in about eight months.
- 1:33:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:33:57SPEAKER_07: No doubt.
- 1:33:58SPEAKER_07: The pandemic is just gonna go away and we're gonna have Clay Baseball, right?
- 1:34:02SPEAKER_03: Heck yes, absolutely.
- 1:34:04SPEAKER_03: So, all right, appreciate it, Travis.
- 1:34:07SPEAKER_03: Yep, thank you.
- 1:34:09SPEAKER_03: So, to kind of round out the episode, we wanted to introduce a new segment.
- 1:34:13SPEAKER_03: This may be a weekly occurrence, it may not be, we don't know yet.
- 1:34:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, our buddy Logan, who we've referenced a few times on the pod, uh, he's a big sports gambling guy.
- 1:34:22SPEAKER_03: Me and Tristan are not big sports gambling guys.
- 1:34:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, if I started doing it, I would get sucked into it, and I don't want to lose all my money.
- 1:34:30SPEAKER_03: I don't want to do this.
- 1:34:31SPEAKER_03: I already get too into sports, but Logan's a big betting guy.
- 1:34:35SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna kind of introduce a Logan's betting corner sort of deal.
- 1:34:38SPEAKER_03: He's got long hair right now, so we're gonna call it Luscious Locks and uh give you a little insight into a little sports gambling.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, he typed up a little thing for us, and uh so I guess we'll give you kind of a kind of his locks of the week.
- 1:34:54SPEAKER_03: So why why don't you uh go ahead and read those off, Tristan?
- 1:34:58SPEAKER_06: All right, let's let's give the people what they want.
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_06: We've gotten some requests for a gambling segment.
- 1:35:02SPEAKER_06: So here we go.
- 1:35:03SPEAKER_06: This is uh pretty much verbatim, a little bit redacted to uh keep the the pod family friendly for the treasured listeners.
- 1:35:13SPEAKER_06: All right, taking Texas and Florida, F the Aggies, and this is UT's year to win the Big 12.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_06: OU can't stop anybody, and UT averages 51 a game.
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_06: They might have 3,000 yards rushing this game.
- 1:35:31SPEAKER_06: Take the ML.
- 1:35:33SPEAKER_06: Or if they've got that lap, take the points.
- 1:35:38SPEAKER_06: It's Red River Rivalry Week.
- 1:35:41SPEAKER_06: Have some balls.
- 1:35:43SPEAKER_06: I know it's surprising, but the Aggies stink again this year.
- 1:35:48SPEAKER_06: They haven't looked very good so far, and it isn't going to change when they play Florida.
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_06: Heismond, hype terrain, didn't leave the station, and they might just say F it and go with the backup.
- 1:36:03SPEAKER_06: Line is only minus six and a half, so lay the points because Florida will definitely win by at least A T D.
- 1:36:10SPEAKER_06: End.
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_03: End segment.
- 1:36:16SPEAKER_03: This man is take what you will.
- 1:36:19SPEAKER_03: Take what you will with that.
- 1:36:20SPEAKER_03: But this is perhaps prophecy.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_03: Perhaps prophecy.
- 1:36:26SPEAKER_03: We're talking about a guy who who thought Kansas was gonna be at least average this year and who was all in on AM making the playoff until about five minutes ago.
- 1:36:34SPEAKER_03: So say what you will.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_03: Take that with a grain of salt.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_03: But yeah, we're gonna introduce, we're gonna have Logan kind of type up a few different uh uh locks, I guess, for uh as the season progresses.
- 1:36:51SPEAKER_03: Um and hopefully we'll get into different sports here too.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_03: But uh love uh that was uh this week's segment of luscious locks with Logan.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_03: But I think that's gonna end it for the uh talking tech pod episode number 10, dude.
- 1:37:06SPEAKER_03: Episode 10, we've hit another milestone.
- 1:37:09SPEAKER_03: Wow, double digits, huh?
- 1:37:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man.
- 1:37:11SPEAKER_03: This is getting nutty, but um that's gonna do it.
- 1:37:14SPEAKER_03: As always, you can follow me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 1:37:17SPEAKER_03: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.
- 1:37:20SPEAKER_03: Tristan is at Tristy Mick.
