Latest / 987 The Shock Circuit / INTERVIEW: NINA FROM THE LEGO GROUP
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: And joining me in the studio, look, uh, when it
- 0:06Speaker 1: comes to all things Lego here in Singapore, maybe she's
- 0:10Speaker 1: the best person to speak to. Let me make sure
- 0:13Speaker 1: I get the title right the very first time. It's
- 0:15Speaker 1: General Manager, Singapore, Malaysia, Travel Retail APEC, The Lego Group.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Say good morning to Ms. Nina Patricia DeCosta in the studio.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Good morning
- 0:26Speaker 1: everyone.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Joaqui.
- 0:28Speaker 1: OK, so, yeah, she's not here to give you the
- 0:31Speaker 1: numbers or the stats of how the Lego Group is
- 0:34Speaker 1: doing here in Singapore. No. She's gonna give you something
- 0:36Speaker 1: really exciting, and this is pertaining to the World Cup.
- 0:38Speaker 1: So Nina, we are all excited for World Cup 2026,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and if I'm not wrong, this isn't Lego's first foray
- 0:44Speaker 1: into football because there are sets for Old Trafford, the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Manchester United Stadium. There's also Cap New. What are some
- 0:50Speaker 1: of the activations that football fans and Lego fans in
- 0:54Speaker 1: Singapore can look forward to?
- 0:56Speaker 2: So thank you for having me. First of all, uh,
- 0:58Speaker 2: Joey I actually prepared a business review, so I'm a
- 1:00Speaker 2: bit disappointed.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We, we, we don't need that kind of briefing. I
- 1:04Speaker 1: think that could be on CNN, yes.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So you're, you're right, you know, we've had a long
- 1:07Speaker 2: connection with football for, for, but for FIFA World Cup 2026,
- 1:11Speaker 2: we really wanted to go bigger and bring this to
- 1:13Speaker 2: life in a more playful Lego way. So of course,
- 1:15Speaker 2: there are new football inspired sets featuring icons like Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe,
- 1:20Speaker 2: Vinnie Junior, plus built inspired by the FIFA World Cup itself.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So there's something for collectors and
- 1:25Speaker 2: Fans. However, in Singapore, the real focus, I would say
- 1:29Speaker 2: is the experience. So here in Singapore, our headline is
- 1:31Speaker 2: the Lego Football Fest at Compass One happening this June,
- 1:35Speaker 2: where we're turning the atrium into a football playground with
- 1:38Speaker 2: things like dribble challenges, robot striker games, and fun photo moments.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And it won't stop there. So we've got in-store activities
- 1:45Speaker 2: happening across the island too during this season. So wherever
- 1:48Speaker 2: you are, it's really about bringing people together to play,
- 1:51Speaker 2: have fun and be part of the football excitement,
- 1:53Speaker 1: Lego style. Yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 1: so.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Over at Sengkang. You heard it here first. Compass One,
- 1:57Speaker 1: it's your area and I guess we are all gonna
- 2:00Speaker 1: flood Sengkang during the World Cup season to take part
- 2:02Speaker 1: in all these activations. And by the way, all the
- 2:05Speaker 1: sets are available for view right now on 987's TikTok.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I'm like a happy kid surrounded by all the Lego sets.
- 2:11Speaker 1: You look like what Nina said earlier, we've got Lionel Messi,
- 2:14Speaker 1: we got Kylian Mbappe, we've got Vinnie Junior, and of course,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Ronaldo had to fall for a bit. We've got the
- 2:19Speaker 1: football and we have the World Cup with us. And Nina,
- 2:22Speaker 1: are you personally a fan of football?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Tricky question. My husband, my husband, I would say my
- 2:27Speaker 2: husband got me into it. The energy is just really contagious, right?
- 2:30Speaker 2: I wouldn't say I'm someone who follows every single match,
- 2:33Speaker 2: but I love what football brings, becomes during big moments
- 2:36Speaker 2: like the FIFA World Cup. Suddenly everyone's a part of it,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and that's exactly what inspired these activations. We didn't want
- 2:42Speaker 2: something just for hardcore fans. We wanted everyone in from
- 2:45Speaker 2: kids to families to people just there for the vibe. Uh,
- 2:48Speaker 2: so we kept asking ourselves, you know, during this planning,
- 2:50Speaker 2: how do we bring that fun, playful football spirit into
- 2:53Speaker 2: the Lego brand, and that's where.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Things like hands on challenges, team play, and interactive moments
- 2:58Speaker 2: came in. Things people can enjoy together, whether you're a
- 3:01Speaker 2: huge football fan or just there to soak in the
- 3:03Speaker 2: atmosphere and have fun with family and friends. Now,
- 3:06Speaker 1: given the installations you just described earlier, I mean, how
- 3:10Speaker 1: long was the planning for this and then moving everything
- 3:13Speaker 1: into Compass One and building the entire play area? How
- 3:16Speaker 1: long will that take? Are things already in place?
- 3:20Speaker 1: Not yet. Not yet.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And it's definitely, it will not be and it's not
- 3:22Speaker 2: an overnight build for sure. There were.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Self planning and creative brainstorming to bring the experience to life.
- 3:28Speaker 2: It really takes a village from creative teams to event
- 3:30Speaker 2: setup teams to retail and activation partners to bring something
- 3:34Speaker 2: like this together, and not to mention my super duper
- 3:36Speaker 2: creative and passionate Lego Singapore team, who are behind all
- 3:40Speaker 2: of this, right? So at the Lego Group, we always
- 3:42Speaker 2: want people to feel like they're stepping into a world
- 3:44Speaker 2: of play. So there's actually a lot happening behind the
- 3:47Speaker 2: scenes to make this experience come to life together
- 3:49Speaker 1: smoothly. So will it just be exclusive to Compass one
- 3:52Speaker 1: or will the whole installation
- 3:54Speaker 1: Making its traveling rounds here in
- 3:56Speaker 2: Singapore. So the full Lego Football Fest experience itself will
- 4:00Speaker 2: will be exclusive to Compass One from June 4th to 21st.
- 4:04Speaker 2: So that's where fans can experience the complete football playground
- 4:08Speaker 2: and all the interactive zones together. But we definitely didn't
- 4:11Speaker 2: want the excitement to stop at just one location. So
- 4:14Speaker 2: alongside Compass One, we're also bringing football themed experiences into
- 4:18Speaker 2: participating Lego certified stores and Toys R Us stores across
- 4:21Speaker 2: the island through activities like make and take.
- 4:24Speaker 2: And Lego Gold Rush. So across our certified stores, for example,
- 4:28Speaker 2: there are, there will be Lego Gold Rush over different
- 4:30Speaker 2: weekends from May 30th to July 19th, and this is
- 4:33Speaker 2: a fast-paced interactive football challenge where shoppers can test their
- 4:37Speaker 2: reflexes and coordination through a tabletop football-style game. So participants
- 4:42Speaker 2: will have to score at least 3 out of the
- 4:43Speaker 2: 5 goals for a chance to win instant prizes, no
- 4:46Speaker 2: purchase required. We're definitely expecting queues outside of our stores
- 4:49Speaker 2: during this weekend. And fans can also take part in
- 4:52Speaker 2: make and take where they can make.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Football inspired creations like jerseys and sneakers to bring home,
- 4:57Speaker 2: super cute, um, Lego builds, uh, happening at selected Lego
- 5:00Speaker 2: certified stores and Toys R Us from May 30th to
- 5:03Speaker 2: June 28th.
- 5:04Speaker 1: OK, but of course people over at Sengkang, you heard
- 5:06Speaker 1: it here first in 1987. June 4th to June 21st,
- 5:10Speaker 1: Compass One is the place you want to be perfect
- 5:12Speaker 1: as well for the June holidays and the World Cup season.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And if you just joined us, we're talking all things
- 5:18Speaker 1: Lego and the World Cup 2026 because we have general
- 5:22Speaker 1: manager Singapore Malays.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Malaysia Travel retail, APAC, the Lego Group, Ms. Nina Patricia
- 5:28Speaker 1: DeCosta in the studio with us, giving you some claps
- 5:31Speaker 1: in the studio. Now, she, she has done the first
- 5:34Speaker 1: half of the interview, like a football game. We're moving
- 5:36Speaker 1: now to the second half. If you're joining us live
- 5:40Speaker 1: on TikTok, next to me on my right and left,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you see all these amazing sets. They will be exclusively
- 5:46Speaker 1: up for grabs here on 987, starting next Monday, but
- 5:50Speaker 1: Miss Nina, looking at the sets around me, which has
- 5:52Speaker 1: been your favorite so far?
- 5:55Speaker 2: I'll have
- 5:55Speaker 2: to pick two. So the first one, I definitely go
- 5:58Speaker 2: with the FIFA World Cup trophy set. What I love
- 6:00Speaker 2: about it is that it's an almost 1 to 1
- 6:02Speaker 2: rep replica, so it feels really iconic. It's like almost
- 6:05Speaker 2: the real thing, something you'd actually want to display in
- 6:08Speaker 2: your own home. But also what's good about it is
- 6:11Speaker 2: that it has that classic Lego twist. So there are
- 6:13Speaker 2: little surprises built in.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Into the, into the set, the globe actually opens up there,
- 6:17Speaker 2: what you see in the box, and there's a hidden
- 6:19Speaker 2: mini scene inside it, which is a super duper fun detail.
- 6:22Speaker 2: My other personal favorite is the football. So I'm actually
- 6:24Speaker 2: building that football, uh, with my husband this week, uh,
- 6:28Speaker 2: for a little Friday at home. So that's one, that
- 6:30Speaker 2: one is quite special too, and I have a surprise
- 6:32Speaker 2: for you. It's a gift for you.
- 6:35Speaker 2: You can do it.
- 6:37Speaker 1: There you go, just leave the paper bag over there
- 6:40Speaker 1: because if anything comes over to my side of the table,
- 6:42Speaker 1: that's it, the whole thing will drop. Yeah, but OK,
- 6:45Speaker 1: being a very experienced Lego builder with the sets, you
- 6:48Speaker 1: would know that, you know, the, the outer, the outer
- 6:52Speaker 1: body of everything, even this World Cup, for example, there's
- 6:55Speaker 1: more to it inside. Sometimes I feel like dismantling the
- 6:57Speaker 1: sets to have a look inside and see, oh, look
- 6:59Speaker 1: at all the details, especially with the Death Star which
- 7:02Speaker 1: I have. But can I ask you, uh,
- 7:04Speaker 1: You know, uh, deviated question, aside from Lego football and
- 7:07Speaker 1: all that, what in your opinion is the best way
- 7:10Speaker 1: to clean?
- 7:12Speaker 1: A Lego set.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I get a lot of this from my friends actually.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So I think that's a question a lot of Lego
- 7:16Speaker 2: fans eventually end up asking after their collection starts growing.
- 7:20Speaker 2: For regular cleaning, the Lego Group recommends gently cleaning Lego
- 7:24Speaker 2: bricks by hand using water no hotter than 40 °C,
- 7:28Speaker 2: together with a soft cloth or sponge.
- 7:30Speaker 2: At any point in time, definitely we do not recommend
- 7:33Speaker 2: putting Lego pieces into the washing machine or your dishwasher
- 7:36Speaker 2: or subjecting it to high heat, because that excessive heat
- 7:39Speaker 2: can affect the shape and quality of the bricks. If
- 7:42Speaker 2: you want a fun fact though, to share a little
- 7:44Speaker 2: bit of a secret from myself, um, I learned this
- 7:46Speaker 2: from a colleague based in Malaysia when I visited her in, um,
- 7:49Speaker 2: in her home, so she uses the makeup brush for daily.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Maintenance to just brush brush off the dust. So I use,
- 7:56Speaker 2: I do that too for daily maintenance.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So I do use an old toothbrush as well to wipes,
- 8:02Speaker 1: a paintbrush to wipe the dust away as well. And
- 8:05Speaker 1: beyond the collection that's very nicely displayed here on my
- 8:08Speaker 1: left and right. Do you have any personal favorite Lego
- 8:11Speaker 1: sets that meaning to you?
- 8:13Speaker 2: Definitely, but I would say my preferences actually change.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Depending on my mood and depending on the day, the
- 8:19Speaker 2: beauty of Lego set is that it's not just for
- 8:21Speaker 2: kids anymore, it becomes this creative outlet for so many
- 8:24Speaker 2: different passions. So at home, I love free play with
- 8:27Speaker 2: Lego Duplo with my kids, so we just let our
- 8:29Speaker 2: imaginations run wild and free, whatever we feel like for
- 8:32Speaker 2: that day. Uh, and personally, I'm also a big fan
- 8:34Speaker 2: of the Lego.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Botanical collection. I love building them with my husband and
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'm I actually have them displayed all over my house.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's a very popular Valentine's Day gift. I saw these
- 8:43Speaker 1: videos on TikTok. Now, two more questions before we let
- 8:46Speaker 1: her go back to the Lego world, as I call it.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Here's a dangerous one for you, in your opinion. Who's
- 8:52Speaker 1: gonna win the World Cup this year? Who, who, who,
- 8:55Speaker 1: who are you backing? Can you even say?
- 8:59Speaker 2: You know what, I think this is probably the hardest
- 9:01Speaker 2: question you can ask today. Honestly, I think the unpredictability
- 9:04Speaker 2: of the FIFA World Cup is super exciting, and that's
- 9:07Speaker 2: what makes it actually magical, you know, because everyone has
- 9:09Speaker 2: their own favorites, dream matchups and players they're rooting for.
- 9:13Speaker 2: And it's great seeing how football brings people together across generations, countries,
- 9:16Speaker 2: and fan communities. So that collective excitement is what makes
- 9:19Speaker 2: the tournament super magical. So to answer your question, I
- 9:23Speaker 2: think I'm going to diplomatically stay out of this and
- 9:26Speaker 2: let the fans debate on this one instead.
- 9:28Speaker 1: The deflection. There you go. She has deflected my question.
- 9:32Speaker 1: And OK, one more before I wrap us all up
- 9:34Speaker 1: here on 987 with uh National Day around the corner,
- 9:39Speaker 1: and given how last year there was that very nice
- 9:41Speaker 1: Lego mural that we did over at um National Museum,
- 9:45Speaker 1: will there be anything we can look forward to for
- 9:47Speaker 1: this year's National Day?
- 9:49Speaker 2: I think it's still a little early for me to
- 9:51Speaker 2: share specifics about National Day, but what I can say
- 9:54Speaker 2: ahead of, ahead of that is that we're already, we
- 9:56Speaker 2: already have super exciting experiences happening all throughout the year,
- 10:00Speaker 2: and even now in Singapore with the upcoming Lego Football
- 10:03Speaker 2: Fest at Compass One from June 4th to 21st, to,
- 10:07Speaker 2: to the other one also, we're also having another partnership
- 10:10Speaker 2: with Jewel Changi Airport actually, uh, with Jewel.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Blooms with LEGO botanicals, and this will be launched next week.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So it's a unique campaign celebrating Singapore culture and creativity, jewels,
- 10:21Speaker 2: iconic beauty, and also, you know, the endless possibilities with
- 10:24Speaker 2: the Lego, with a, with a Lego brand. So it's
- 10:26Speaker 2: actually Southeast Asia's largest Lego botanicals themed mall wide activation
- 10:31Speaker 2: featuring large scale floral inspired Lego botanicals installations, displays across jewel.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It's designed to be something for families, friends, and visitors
- 10:40Speaker 2: of all ages, uh, to enjoy together. And you should
- 10:43Speaker 2: go next week. We, uh, we'll, we're actually launching it
- 10:45Speaker 2: on May 26th.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Oh, beautiful. There you go. So May 26th over at
- 10:48Speaker 1: Jewel Changi and then June 4th onwards, go on down
- 10:51Speaker 1: to Compass One. Thank you so much, Ms. Nina, for
- 10:54Speaker 1: your time and giving us these amazing sets that again
- 10:57Speaker 1: next Monday here on 987, you might have a chance
- 11:00Speaker 1: to win.
