- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, Ladie.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia podcast. Welcome to Meet Eater
- 0:27Speaker 2: Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time, that's noon for
- 0:30Speaker 2: our friends in Platte, South Dakota, on Thursday, April twenty fourth,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and we're live from Meet Eater HQ and Bozeman. I'm
- 0:36Speaker 2: your host, Spencer, joined today by Seth and Chili. On
- 0:40Speaker 2: today's show, we'll interview Brian Schroeder about North America's oldest
- 0:44Speaker 2: weapon kit that was just discovered in Texas. Then we've
- 0:48Speaker 2: got a hot tip off about recycled waiters and fleshing furs,
- 0:51Speaker 2: followed by one minute fishing with Trout Unlimited in Connecticut.
- 0:55Speaker 2: After that, we'll play Meat Eater's Price Is Right, and
- 0:57Speaker 2: finally we'll interview Amanda fair baron Kimmerie about one of
- 1:01Speaker 2: the coolest tattoos I've ever seen. First, Seth, I want
- 1:05Speaker 2: to talk to you about this very successful weekend of hunting.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Had how many turkeys died? Well, between my wife and
- 1:13Speaker 2: I four died four turkeys. You boys are going to
- 1:16Speaker 2: be eating good. You and your wife can be eating
- 1:18Speaker 2: good on white meat for the rest of the year.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, we were somewhere in America hunting and killed
- 1:27Speaker 1: some turkeys, and then had some time to kill, did
- 1:30Speaker 1: some exploring, and when did a little Spencer Newhart rock counting.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Seth, You're getting right to the part that I want
- 1:36Speaker 2: to talk to you. Yeah, I thought I was going
- 1:37Speaker 2: to have to listen to turkey hunting storm.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Well, I can tell you them.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Let's talk about the rocky, Yeah, let's talk about that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah. I found a big rock that had a little
- 1:49Speaker 1: bit of this amonite sticking out of it, and time
- 1:52Speaker 1: I didn't know what was in there. I could just
- 1:54Speaker 1: tell that there was something going on. So I threw
- 1:59Speaker 1: that rock against another rock a little too hard.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yep, you threw the soft rock against the harder rock, Yes.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And broke it open. And this is what I found inside.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Seth in his hand has a softball size secretter. This
- 2:13Speaker 2: is an amonite. Ammonite had one of the most successful
- 2:18Speaker 2: runs in the history of the planet. They were around,
- 2:21Speaker 2: They showed up in the fossil record like four hundred
- 2:23Speaker 2: and fifty million years ago, and then they disappeared around
- 2:27Speaker 2: sixty six million years ago for the same event that
- 2:29Speaker 2: killed the dinosaurs. Now, in between that time, they survived
- 2:32Speaker 2: all kinds of crazy stuff. There were other extinction events
- 2:35Speaker 2: that happened where like ninety eight percent of the life
- 2:39Speaker 2: on Earth disappeared and they survived that.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Really.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah, ammonites made it through. Around two hundred million years ago,
- 2:45Speaker 2: they started to struggle a little bit and the event
- 2:48Speaker 2: that killed the dinosaurs is also what killed them. And
- 2:50Speaker 2: this amonite is wonderful. They at one point, or at
- 2:55Speaker 2: probably multiple points, were the most populous animal honor. There
- 3:00Speaker 2: was more of them than anything else living in our oceans.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And you should watch the documentary Prehistoric Planet if you've
- 3:06Speaker 2: seen in the regular documentary called like Planet Earth, all right, Yeah,
- 3:10Speaker 2: there's a Prehistoric Planet one they do, and there's like
- 3:13Speaker 2: a whole little section on ammonites. It's a ton of
- 3:16Speaker 2: fun in this one. Seth has a beautiful knacker on it.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That's what that little sheen what you see on a
- 3:22Speaker 2: seashell that you pick up in the ocean. Show that
- 3:24Speaker 2: thing to the camera a little more, spinning around a
- 3:26Speaker 2: wonderful ammonite. Now, there's some of those that are the
- 3:29Speaker 2: sides of your fingernail all the way up to ones
- 3:31Speaker 2: that are nine foot wide. And this is a big one, Seth.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I have another rock that I had found with
- 3:39Speaker 1: a couple small ones just kind of sticking out, like
- 3:41Speaker 1: poking out. But yeah, that's the biggest one I've ever found.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And another thing I find with this, what's the shine
- 3:51Speaker 1: called again, knacker Knacker? I believe it's a baculite. Yes, yeah, yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 1: so we find those with that shine on there too.
- 4:00Speaker 2: A similar yeah, a similar type of animal.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Do you know what would have made them so successful?
- 4:06Speaker 2: I don't know, I'm not sure. I think they obviously
- 4:12Speaker 2: if we think about the things that are successful now,
- 4:14Speaker 2: like a kaya or a cockroach, they're able to occupy
- 4:18Speaker 2: a ton of different niches, right like if one food
- 4:22Speaker 2: source or one type of habitat disappeared, they just keep
- 4:25Speaker 2: on going with something else. I'm assuming it's something similar
- 4:28Speaker 2: with made them so successful. That's a special fossil set.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's you.
- 4:33Speaker 2: It's one of the better ones in my collection. And
- 4:36Speaker 2: where's your collection live?
- 4:37Speaker 1: It lives in my living room. Kelsey and I made
- 4:41Speaker 1: my wife, Kelsey and I made these like shelves we
- 4:44Speaker 1: called the Morris Museum. There's just all the cool stuff
- 4:47Speaker 1: we found over the years.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And it looked like that thing was found inside of
- 4:51Speaker 2: a cannon Ball. There's a whole river in North Dakota
- 4:54Speaker 2: called the cannon Ball River and and basically that's like
- 4:58Speaker 2: mud that would kind of roll in the waves, and
- 5:01Speaker 2: sometimes I would pick up fossils like this. So that's
- 5:03Speaker 2: probably what happened there, Yeah, is that this thing died,
- 5:05Speaker 2: got rolled up in some mud and then just got
- 5:08Speaker 2: brown blown around on a windy shoreline for a while.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's it's I don't know, it's cool. Like you,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I've seen videos of people breaking those open and like
- 5:18Speaker 1: you never know what's going to be inside. Yeah, but yeah,
- 5:22Speaker 1: this one I got lucky with this one.
- 5:24Speaker 2: What a weekend, that giant fossil in four turkeys?
- 5:26Speaker 1: Four turkeys. Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Well, at the beginning to show there, I shouted out Platts,
- 5:30Speaker 2: South Dakota, Chile, You fellow South Dakota. Nicest people I
- 5:33Speaker 2: ever met on Earth are from Platts, South Dakota.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Oh they're great.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, they kind of have a bigger footprint than
- 5:40Speaker 3: I I thought. I went fishing up in Alaska in
- 5:45Speaker 3: a town called Saint Petersburg, and the guy who took
- 5:48Speaker 3: us out his name was Oly, but his parents originated
- 5:52Speaker 3: from Platte, South Dakota. Moved to Saint Petersburg. He now
- 5:56Speaker 3: lives there with his family, but he goes back every
- 5:58Speaker 3: single year. And then I got people that I grew
- 6:00Speaker 3: up with that live over there.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Great bird hunting.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say, what goes on in plat
- 6:06Speaker 2: everything right on the Missouri River.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yp Oh, So they got fishing, deer hunting, dirk hunting.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Nice.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, sounds like a paradise.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, we we love you, Platt. Me and Chiley shout
- 6:18Speaker 2: out Platt. All right, let's move on with the show.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Joining us on the line first is Brian Schroeder, the
- 6:24Speaker 2: director of the Center of Big Bend Studies. He's here
- 6:27Speaker 2: to talk about what maybe North America's oldest intact weapons system,
- 6:32Speaker 2: which was just discovered in West Texas. Brian, Welcome to
- 6:35Speaker 2: the show.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Thanks thanks for having me.
- 6:38Speaker 2: First thing, Brian set the scene for us by describing
- 6:41Speaker 2: Bend Big Bend National Park.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Okay, so these are found just outside of the park
- 6:48Speaker 5: a little bit, and they're right on the edge of
- 6:52Speaker 5: a big cliff and it's it's called the Alamedo Creek Drainage.
- 6:57Speaker 5: And the Alamado Creek Drainage has was had live water
- 7:02Speaker 5: and so you're we're you know, we're looking at the
- 7:05Speaker 5: large of a big desert environment at the base of
- 7:07Speaker 5: a large creek and a dried up stream.
- 7:11Speaker 2: So besides the weapon kit that we'll get to in
- 7:13Speaker 2: a little bit, what other notable finds have archaeologists had
- 7:16Speaker 2: in this area?
- 7:19Speaker 5: So the regions had a lot of stuff found throughout
- 7:21Speaker 5: the years. I mean, that's kind of what lured me there.
- 7:26Speaker 5: There's just a mammoth tusk that's rattling around in the
- 7:28Speaker 5: news that we just our center just excavated that. But
- 7:33Speaker 5: for the most part, it's stuff like this, just lots
- 7:35Speaker 5: of weapon kits that just did not weapon kits, but
- 7:38Speaker 5: weapons in particular. So it just preserves perishable stuff really
- 7:42Speaker 5: really well because it's so hot and.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Dry, and so that's that's the key for that area.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Why like ancient things are so well preserved in West Texas.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, you get really good preservation where there's where
- 7:56Speaker 5: you it's either hot or dry or it's protected. It's
- 8:00Speaker 5: the same thing. You know, microorganims needed some stuff to
- 8:04Speaker 5: live and when you've when you remove water from that equation,
- 8:07Speaker 5: you're getting really good in preservation. So yeah, that's how
- 8:11Speaker 5: that's how they preserve.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Okay, tell us about the day of discovery. Describe the
- 8:15Speaker 2: cave and why your team was in that spot.
- 8:19Speaker 5: So this is we're actually there because the cave has
- 8:22Speaker 5: been collected for years by amateur groups, and we were
- 8:25Speaker 5: there actually because we didn't think we would find anything.
- 8:28Speaker 5: We were there because we thought that it was really impacted.
- 8:31Speaker 5: And what we wanted to do is we wanted to
- 8:33Speaker 5: open up a cave and date the sediments so we
- 8:35Speaker 5: could see how much how much time was left we
- 8:40Speaker 5: get to understand and the sediments and the pesty archaeology
- 8:43Speaker 5: record wouldn't get in our way. And so it's really collapsed.
- 8:48Speaker 5: It's been very dug and so it's it's it's not
- 8:52Speaker 5: this Hollywood cave that you walk into. It's been pretty impacted.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Okay, And so tell us about like when the weapons
- 9:00Speaker 2: were discovered. How close to each other were they did
- 9:03Speaker 2: you know what they were? Was everyone stoked and given
- 9:05Speaker 2: high fives out?
- 9:07Speaker 5: Oh so, yeah. So we actually dug in a portion
- 9:09Speaker 5: of the cave that was really collapsed, and we thought
- 9:12Speaker 5: that that would be the best example to find all
- 9:14Speaker 5: of the sediments we were looking for. And some of
- 9:18Speaker 5: the crew thought we were crazy because it was really
- 9:21Speaker 5: tucked up back underneath the rock, and we started excavating
- 9:24Speaker 5: under that and we ended up finding four of them
- 9:29Speaker 5: in twenty twenty. That was the first year that we
- 9:31Speaker 5: found them, and one of them we could tell that
- 9:34Speaker 5: it was a piece of a dart, but the other
- 9:36Speaker 5: ones really didn't make any sense. And so we were
- 9:39Speaker 5: really excited about the dart obviously, but we did not
- 9:44Speaker 5: we did not know what the other pieces in part were,
- 9:46Speaker 5: and then we found a piece of it every year
- 9:48Speaker 5: after that as we expanded out the excavation, so we've
- 9:51Speaker 5: literally found pieces in parts since twenty twenty.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Okay, tell us about what this weapon kid fully consists
- 9:58Speaker 2: of besides the dark.
- 10:01Speaker 5: So it's got it's it's really interesting because it's got
- 10:03Speaker 5: different components and so it shows us how modular the
- 10:06Speaker 5: hunting kits were. And so we have h We have
- 10:10Speaker 5: at least four stone tipped for shafts that would have
- 10:12Speaker 5: won the end of the at laddl system. We have
- 10:16Speaker 5: the at laddle itself that's missing the spurs, so the
- 10:20Speaker 5: spur actually snapped off of it and then they discarded
- 10:23Speaker 5: it back there. With this, we have footwears, we have
- 10:27Speaker 5: we have sandals that they left with there. We have
- 10:29Speaker 5: some kind of antler piece that's clearly for like retooling
- 10:32Speaker 5: the stone that goes on there. And then we have
- 10:36Speaker 5: a what we call the people call rabbit sticks, but
- 10:39Speaker 5: the discipline starting to call plate straight flying boomerangs, so
- 10:44Speaker 5: a hunting boomerang. And then it's we have wood tipped
- 10:49Speaker 5: darts that probably were a poison delivery device, but that's
- 10:53Speaker 5: conjecture right now where you've got to do the science
- 10:55Speaker 5: on that. But that's where we think they are. So
- 10:56Speaker 5: we have all these modular pieces. Oh and then we
- 10:58Speaker 5: have the we have the of the darts themselves. So
- 11:01Speaker 5: the only thing we're missing out of the kit is
- 11:03Speaker 5: the actual sleeve that the foe shafts would have fit into.
- 11:07Speaker 5: So we have almost the complete hunting kit at a
- 11:10Speaker 5: moment in time almost seven thousand years ago.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And you can see a photo of this hunting kit
- 11:15Speaker 2: right now on the med Eater podcast YouTube channel. What
- 11:19Speaker 2: do we know about the person who left these behind?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Did they live there? Were they just passing through? What
- 11:24Speaker 2: do you guys think?
- 11:26Speaker 5: So that's the part we're trying to understand right now.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Because we have there's a small little hearth back there,
- 11:31Speaker 5: and there's four copper lights back there, So there's four
- 11:33Speaker 5: pieces of essentially human poop, and it seems like somebody
- 11:38Speaker 5: just went back there, went through their weapon kit. They
- 11:41Speaker 5: cut the fletching off of the back of the knox,
- 11:43Speaker 5: so they salvaged their knox. They were retooling their darts,
- 11:49Speaker 5: and then they left the pieces of the four shafts
- 11:52Speaker 5: that you know, they couldn't service because all the four
- 11:54Speaker 5: shafts are split. So it seems like one person passing through.
- 11:58Speaker 5: But it seems like the intent was to come back
- 12:00Speaker 5: because there's a there's a prong horned hide that's been
- 12:03Speaker 5: folded like they were cutting pieces off of it and
- 12:06Speaker 5: they were maybe like maybe servicing some something, you know, clothing,
- 12:09Speaker 5: I don't know, but then they folded it up and
- 12:12Speaker 5: they put it on a rock, and it seems like
- 12:14Speaker 5: they meant to get back to that and they never.
- 12:16Speaker 5: They just never got back to there. So my guess
- 12:18Speaker 5: would be passing through and probably one, maybe two people,
- 12:22Speaker 5: not many. It's a really really small little crook in
- 12:25Speaker 5: the cave, Like it's not like, yeah, one person laying
- 12:29Speaker 5: back there would be crowded.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Brian Seth here got a question for you. Are you
- 12:34Speaker 1: guys done with the excavation or could there be more
- 12:38Speaker 1: stuff in there that you guys haven't found yet.
- 12:40Speaker 5: No, so we're actually at the beginning. We're I mean,
- 12:43Speaker 5: we were not in the beginning. We've been digging for
- 12:44Speaker 5: twenty twenty. But now that we've understand this period, this
- 12:47Speaker 5: time period better back there, We're we're not to the
- 12:50Speaker 5: time period we want to want to get to. So
- 12:52Speaker 5: we want to get to the early record. We really
- 12:54Speaker 5: want to look at the paleo record, and that's what
- 12:57Speaker 5: we're trying to get to. But we keep finding all
- 12:58Speaker 5: this stuff. So we're we're we're five years into a
- 13:03Speaker 5: collaborative research with the University of Kansas. The University of
- 13:06Speaker 5: Kansas actually sponsors it, and we're going to keep going
- 13:09Speaker 5: for the foreseeable future. So we're kind of kind of
- 13:15Speaker 5: midway through.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I would suppose, Brian, do we know what was in
- 13:18Speaker 2: the fossilized crap?
- 13:21Speaker 6: Uh?
- 13:22Speaker 5: No, that's one of the things we need to look at.
- 13:24Speaker 5: They it's definitely fiver, but there's there's kind of a
- 13:27Speaker 5: startling amount of bone in it, and uh, that's one
- 13:32Speaker 5: of the things we need to do. We just dated
- 13:34Speaker 5: them and we really didn't think they'd be the same
- 13:36Speaker 5: age as the deposit, but they're the exact same age
- 13:38Speaker 5: as the hunting care. Wow, so all that's the exact
- 13:41Speaker 5: same age. So that's that's gonna be amazing because that
- 13:43Speaker 5: will give us direct I mean, that'll tell us exactly
- 13:45Speaker 5: what you know, at least they were doing for a
- 13:47Speaker 5: moment in time back there.
- 13:49Speaker 2: And what do you think the weapons were used to hunt?
- 13:53Speaker 5: So I think there that's the coolest thing is I
- 13:55Speaker 5: think they're hunting different things, right, So there's a stone
- 13:58Speaker 5: tipped point that goes on the into the dart. That's
- 14:00Speaker 5: for one type of gang, probably medium game. I mean,
- 14:03Speaker 5: it's pretty sexy to say that. You know, that toolkit
- 14:06Speaker 5: maybe killed the prong horn that was in there, but
- 14:08Speaker 5: that I definitely don't know. That's just you know, that's
- 14:11Speaker 5: me editorializing it. And then the darts, the poison if
- 14:14Speaker 5: they are poisoned darts, the wood tips those are for
- 14:17Speaker 5: something else entirely. And then there's a straight flying boomerang boomerang,
- 14:22Speaker 5: which is we think it's for small game, but the
- 14:26Speaker 5: faculty that I work with do a lot of experimental
- 14:28Speaker 5: studies and they've they've played around with those and they
- 14:33Speaker 5: think they could be pretty deadly for other stuff. So, uh,
- 14:36Speaker 5: it's definitely a medium mammal sized toolkit and maybe small mammals.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Definitely pronghorn. We don't know if there was bison out
- 14:45Speaker 5: in West Texas. That's one of the open questions. So
- 14:49Speaker 5: I mean certainly medium game and small game.
- 14:52Speaker 2: You said that the idea that they are darts is
- 14:56Speaker 2: sort of a hypothesis right now, What makes you think
- 14:59Speaker 2: that they are poisoned darts and what kind of poison
- 15:01Speaker 2: would they have been using.
- 15:03Speaker 5: So that's one of the things that my colleagues at
- 15:06Speaker 5: the Center want to really look at. They're the ones
- 15:09Speaker 5: that have really been like showing me more of the
- 15:13Speaker 5: sighting that a lot of indigenous groups knew how to
- 15:16Speaker 5: hunt with poison, and they knew how to make poison
- 15:18Speaker 5: compounds and exactly what it would be I don't I
- 15:22Speaker 5: don't know, But we just actually got the a lab
- 15:24Speaker 5: equipment to start testing that. So we're actually going to
- 15:26Speaker 5: start doing that and making They're going to start making
- 15:29Speaker 5: different poison compounds and testing it against that with residue
- 15:33Speaker 5: and seeing if we can figure out what they're doing.
- 15:35Speaker 5: But the wood, the wood part of that I think
- 15:39Speaker 5: is what we think there's clearly coded in some kind
- 15:42Speaker 5: of resin, and they've been sort of looking for this
- 15:47Speaker 5: parallel and the archaeological record that if there's these wooden tips,
- 15:49Speaker 5: that would be a great way to deliver poison into
- 15:53Speaker 5: animals and love to hold. This cave has at least
- 15:57Speaker 5: three of them, so we can start testing that hypothesis.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And what kind of wood are those tools made of.
- 16:04Speaker 5: That's so the only thing we've dispeciated as far as
- 16:07Speaker 5: wood goes right now is the actual at laddle itself,
- 16:10Speaker 5: and that is it's an acacia. It's probably local Mesquite.
- 16:15Speaker 5: I mean, it's absolutely jaw dropping. I'll never find another
- 16:18Speaker 5: at lettle in my life. And it's a really really
- 16:21Speaker 5: old at laddle. But it's as far as things that
- 16:24Speaker 5: they can make, it's probably a fifteen minute job for them.
- 16:27Speaker 5: It's a pretty simple at laddle and it's it's just
- 16:32Speaker 5: a split. It's just split, so that one we know
- 16:35Speaker 5: is mesquite.
- 16:37Speaker 2: And the radiocarbon dating, the radiocarbon dating process for wood
- 16:41Speaker 2: is that the exact same as it is for rock.
- 16:45Speaker 5: So radiocarbon dating it works on the organic the rock
- 16:48Speaker 5: we date differently rock you can date residues off it
- 16:52Speaker 5: if there's organic compounds, but you can only date organic compounds.
- 16:56Speaker 5: So that's what makes the weapon kits so cool is
- 16:58Speaker 5: that it's it's a direct decision and those people killed
- 17:01Speaker 5: those trees to make that weapons and so you're actually
- 17:03Speaker 5: they are the ones that actually killed the organic organic
- 17:08Speaker 5: materials to make that kit. So we're dating a direct
- 17:11Speaker 5: human decision.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so it was declared by you guys. I think
- 17:19Speaker 2: that this is the oldest intact weapons system in North America.
- 17:23Speaker 2: What Discovery now has the silver medal. We talked a lot.
- 17:27Speaker 5: About this, so again my colleagues at the Center, we
- 17:30Speaker 5: were talking about this, and there's certainly older weapons like
- 17:35Speaker 5: individual weapons, and there's probably some stuff in the Yukon
- 17:39Speaker 5: that's as it's probably older. But we all can think
- 17:45Speaker 5: that the second oldest complete system is probably from White
- 17:48Speaker 5: Dog Cave. You get the full aut Lattle system that's
- 17:52Speaker 5: too twenty five hundred years somewhere in there. So I
- 17:55Speaker 5: mean we're getting a significant time difference, and this weapon
- 17:58Speaker 5: kit is completely different than the one in uh White Dog.
- 18:03Speaker 5: So that's really interesting to see how that that technology
- 18:06Speaker 5: evolved over four thousand years.
- 18:09Speaker 2: So what comes next for this project?
- 18:13Speaker 1: We're gonna keep going.
- 18:14Speaker 5: I mean, the goal of the project is I mean
- 18:16Speaker 5: the seventh you know, the sixty five hundred year old
- 18:18Speaker 5: weapon kit is really really cool. But what we really
- 18:21Speaker 5: want to do is know if there's earlier deposits in
- 18:23Speaker 5: the cave and if the cave was used by earlier
- 18:25Speaker 5: folks and we just haven't gotten there in the excavation.
- 18:27Speaker 5: So next is continuing to go down and see if
- 18:30Speaker 5: we get earlier deposits and we have a you know,
- 18:34Speaker 5: a paleo record there and we can get the initial
- 18:36Speaker 5: entry of humans into North America.
- 18:38Speaker 1: So that's next. Keep digging.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Well, thank you for joining us, Brian. Congrats on the
- 18:43Speaker 2: exciting fine and good luck with the research to come.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Thanks, thanks for having me have a good one. Thanks, thanks, Thanks.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Yeah, well we've got to We've got a real Spencer
- 18:53Speaker 2: episode so far, a lot.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Of rock, yeah, top Yeah, but you're stoked about this.
- 18:58Speaker 2: We'll see if the listener stick around with us or not.
- 19:04Speaker 2: All right, Our next segment is hot tip off, Jo,
- 19:10Speaker 2: what's that face? That's salty? That's salty?
- 19:29Speaker 1: God, Phil.
- 19:30Speaker 2: That song was so good. Even got Phil back there, Bob,
- 19:33Speaker 2: and he composed it. Phil has been trying to line
- 19:38Speaker 2: up karaoke date in the next few weeks.
- 19:40Speaker 7: You know what, I got to get the credit to
- 19:42Speaker 7: another man in this room, and that would be Chilly.
- 19:44Speaker 7: He's the one who brought it back back up to
- 19:47Speaker 7: my attention, and I'm glad he did. We're trying to
- 19:48Speaker 7: make it happen. So you know, if there's anyone at
- 19:51Speaker 7: the company watching, hit up that group slack, let me
- 19:53Speaker 7: know what date?
- 19:54Speaker 2: What's the groups that called?
- 19:55Speaker 1: It's just called I'm just trying to bring the people together.
- 19:59Speaker 2: You know what, do you just sing these tough times?
- 20:02Speaker 1: What am I gonna sing? Yeah? Oh, there's so many
- 20:04Speaker 1: songs out there. Yeah, go with Creed.
- 20:08Speaker 8: You know.
- 20:10Speaker 3: See the problem I run into at karaoke nowadays is
- 20:14Speaker 3: I'll try to make this quick. Is you get either
- 20:16Speaker 3: really really old people or you get really really young people.
- 20:20Speaker 2: So either gonna try and bridge that.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah, you're gonna offend some old people, or you're gonna
- 20:24Speaker 3: sing a song that young people don't know.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Which is it's a fickle game you gotta play.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Okay, give us an example, though, a boy you think
- 20:31Speaker 2: you might sing, oh.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Man, you know you can't go wrong with like some
- 20:36Speaker 3: Tyler childers. My actually go to song is Neon Moon
- 20:41Speaker 3: by Brooks and Dunn. Because I can do this thing
- 20:43Speaker 3: where I can kind of sound I can do like
- 20:46Speaker 3: make you know, Ronnie Dun's voice a little different. I
- 20:48Speaker 3: can kind of do that, And so the old people
- 20:52Speaker 3: in the crowd they can appreciate. The young kids just
- 20:54Speaker 3: have no clue what's going on.
- 20:55Speaker 2: So the last time we went out for karaoke after Kickball, I.
- 20:58Speaker 7: Sang the I was gonna say, I think I've heard
- 21:00Speaker 7: Spencer sing that one good choice choice.
- 21:03Speaker 2: All right. Hot tip Off is where two listeners go
- 21:06Speaker 2: head to head with competing pieces of advice, and after
- 21:09Speaker 2: we hear each tip, we'll declare which one is hotter.
- 21:11Speaker 2: If you have a hot tip, take a one minute
- 21:13Speaker 2: video on your phone and email it to radio at
- 21:15Speaker 2: the meat Eater dot com with the subject line hot
- 21:18Speaker 2: tip Off. This week it's Adam Smith versus Brian Nistley,
- 21:22Speaker 2: and they're competing to win a three year on ex
- 21:25Speaker 2: Elite membership in a Moultrie Edge two cellcam. All right,
- 21:29Speaker 2: let's hear this week's hot tips.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Adam Smith.
- 21:37Speaker 9: Hey there, Adam Smith, coming at you with a hot
- 21:40Speaker 9: fishing tip that is budget friendly. I love to wadefish.
- 21:44Speaker 9: But I don't normally use waiters or need waiters, but
- 21:47Speaker 9: I do like the storage they provide. And so I
- 21:49Speaker 9: was looking for a chest rig, a weatherproof, water resistant
- 21:53Speaker 9: chest rig to take waiting. And as I was doing that,
- 21:56Speaker 9: I remember that I had an old, messed up pair
- 21:58Speaker 9: of waiters that was leakan. So instead of taking hundreds
- 22:02Speaker 9: or dozens of dollars to spend a new piece of gear,
- 22:05Speaker 9: I took some scissors, took that old pair of waiters
- 22:08Speaker 9: and just cut them in half right at the belly.
- 22:11Speaker 9: Now the top half of that waiters serves as a
- 22:13Speaker 9: chest rig. I got water resistant storage here for falling
- 22:16Speaker 9: wallet keys. And between this and my fishing vest, everything
- 22:21Speaker 9: is right on me, easy access. And if I take
- 22:23Speaker 9: a dip in the water or the weather turns real rainy,
- 22:25Speaker 9: I know I can still keep my essentials dry. So
- 22:28Speaker 9: I say able to do that without buying a new
- 22:29Speaker 9: piece of gear. So let me know what you think
- 22:32Speaker 9: budget friendly fish and tip.
- 22:34Speaker 10: Thank you, Bryan Nisily's Brian Nisley, Northwestern Pennsylvania. We got
- 22:46Speaker 10: a hot tip for you guys that are questioning coons
- 22:49Speaker 10: or other super greasy animals.
- 22:52Speaker 11: Always like chanlenge keeping your beam clean. Let's you start
- 22:57Speaker 11: pushing the fat off off the skirt, get your beam
- 23:01Speaker 11: all greased up, use paper towels or something to wipe it.
- 23:04Speaker 11: But uh, paper towels are getting expensive. First cheap and
- 23:09Speaker 11: I learned this from the furbire years ago. Get yourself
- 23:13Speaker 11: some sawdust. I work at saw mills. I get it
- 23:17Speaker 11: for free.
- 23:17Speaker 12: But get a sawmills or woodworking shops anywhere that sell
- 23:21Speaker 12: saudust for animal bedding or whatever. Throw a handful of
- 23:24Speaker 12: sauducet on there, wipe it around, soaks up that grease
- 23:30Speaker 12: and wipe bread off.
- 23:33Speaker 11: You're good to go or three hands too. Super cheap
- 23:37Speaker 11: and effective.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And again they are competing for a three year on
- 23:44Speaker 2: ex elite membership in a Moultrie Edge two cell cam.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Now Brian is kind of going for Seth's heart there.
- 23:51Speaker 2: He's from Pennsylvania wearing a bear grease hat talking about fleshing.
- 23:55Speaker 2: What do you ever there? Reckon raccoons? Now, I'm gonna
- 23:57Speaker 2: have to rely on you here, Seth. Is that a
- 23:59Speaker 2: hot tip about putting sawdust down?
- 24:01Speaker 1: That is a hot tip. It's a hot tip that
- 24:03Speaker 1: I've been doing for years. Oh, okay, decades Actually, where'd
- 24:07Speaker 1: you learn it? In Pennsylvania when I was fleshing coons? Yeah,
- 24:11Speaker 1: we're a fur buyer.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Of of the percentage of folks who are out there
- 24:14Speaker 2: fleshing coons, what percentage do you think know about that
- 24:17Speaker 2: hot tip? Is it common knowledge?
- 24:20Speaker 1: I would say it's fairly common okay, yeah, but I
- 24:24Speaker 1: could be wrong. I just the guys I ran around with.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Their experience, Yeah, they were legit.
- 24:30Speaker 1: But you know there might be some folks starting out
- 24:33Speaker 1: that don't know about that.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Great, you're an aspiring trapper, right, did you know about
- 24:38Speaker 2: the sawdust trick?
- 24:39Speaker 1: I didn't know.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Yeah, there's I I don't know a whole lot about fleshing.
- 24:46Speaker 3: I've only done it a number of times. Seth has
- 24:49Speaker 3: been a part of that process pretty heavily. But now
- 24:53Speaker 3: for so for me, that is a hot tip.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:56Speaker 3: I was more interested in his his setup that he
- 24:58Speaker 3: he had going on. Yeah, everything Beam was pretty sweet there.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Now, Phill, are you doing a poll of our audience?
- 25:05Speaker 1: I am doing. I've got a live poll in the
- 25:06Speaker 1: chat right now.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Bill's gonna let that go.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I will kind of tight so let heard.
- 25:12Speaker 3: I will say with the first hot tip smith yep,
- 25:16Speaker 3: I was you know, I love the idea. I was
- 25:19Speaker 3: looking for it to be a little shorter, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 3: to pique my interest. You know, it was me it'd
- 25:24Speaker 3: be probably just that, just a tube top, just a
- 25:27Speaker 3: tube top.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I like that. You'll get to you can really appreciate
- 25:32Speaker 2: these hot tips if you're watching this on our YouTube channel,
- 25:34Speaker 2: and again we have Adam Smith with the recycled waiters
- 25:37Speaker 2: versus Brian and doing the fur trapping. A while our
- 25:41Speaker 2: audience continues to vote on this, I want to tell
- 25:43Speaker 2: you folks that we need more hot tips. Corey Calkins,
- 25:46Speaker 2: he's the one who manages our inbox there, and he said,
- 25:50Speaker 2: we're running low on really good ones. So please take
- 25:53Speaker 2: that one minute video and email it to radio at
- 25:56Speaker 2: the meadeater dot com with the subject line hot tip off.
- 25:59Speaker 2: You gonna compete for some really good prizes if your
- 26:02Speaker 2: video gets chosen this week. It's that three year on
- 26:06Speaker 2: ex leap membership in a Moultrie Edge two cell can.
- 26:09Speaker 7: And really quick get some questions into the chat for
- 26:13Speaker 7: the crew for our listener feedback section two.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Just a reminder, all right, Chile, if you were voting,
- 26:17Speaker 2: you're gonna pick the recycled waiters of the fur trapping.
- 26:20Speaker 2: We're gonna let the audience decide, but maybe we can
- 26:22Speaker 2: sway their opinion.
- 26:23Speaker 3: Brother, I would say, where I'm at in my life,
- 26:27Speaker 3: I would say the hot the trapping, hot tip. Audust like,
- 26:31Speaker 3: that's probably gonna be more applicable to me.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Right now, Okay, Seth, I appreciate a frugal man, but
- 26:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with the fur trapping as well. The
- 26:43Speaker 1: hot the Saldus hot tip. He Brian's from Pennsylvania. Yeah,
- 26:48Speaker 1: he's flushing raccoons, good facial air. All this is very
- 26:54Speaker 1: familiar territory, territory to me. I'm going with Brian.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with Adam Smith. I like the idea
- 27:01Speaker 2: of recycling those waiters, and that looked like a pretty
- 27:04Speaker 2: handy little thing to have on your chest. People would
- 27:08Speaker 2: talk to you about it if they saw you on
- 27:10Speaker 2: the river, I think too.
- 27:11Speaker 7: All right, I'm gonna go ahead and wrap up this
- 27:13Speaker 7: poll right now with fifty three percent. Oh no, at
- 27:19Speaker 7: the last second, fifty two now, Okay, the winner is
- 27:22Speaker 7: Brian withst well done.
- 27:25Speaker 13: Brian.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Cory Calkins is going to reach out to you about
- 27:28Speaker 2: how to claim your prizes and for everyone else listening,
- 27:32Speaker 2: please send us some more hot tips. We want to
- 27:34Speaker 2: keep doing this segment. We want to get educated and
- 27:37Speaker 2: educate our audience with your hot tips. All right, let's
- 27:42Speaker 2: take a break for some listener feedback. Phil, what's the
- 27:44Speaker 2: chat have to say?
- 27:45Speaker 1: That's a great question.
- 27:47Speaker 7: Well, first, I just wanted to say congrats to Mogor,
- 27:49Speaker 7: our guy Mogor in the chat. He just passed the
- 27:51Speaker 7: toughest exam of his life and we're officially kicking off
- 27:54Speaker 7: the weekend for him.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Okay, congratulations, he's in the chat every week. We appreciate
- 28:00Speaker 2: you sticking around with a smoke goer and hanging out
- 28:04Speaker 2: from Hungry. I'd like to know what that exam is.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Maybe let us know in the chant.
- 28:07Speaker 7: Oh yeah, please do, because I think he mentioned it
- 28:09Speaker 7: a couple weeks ago as well, and I was curious.
- 28:10Speaker 1: So yeah, let us know Mogor.
- 28:12Speaker 7: This is kind of a big general question, but it's
- 28:14Speaker 7: still that's still that turkey season. So if you guys
- 28:16Speaker 7: have any hot tips, speaking of for spicy nachos, he says, Hey, all,
- 28:20Speaker 7: first time turkey hunt here. I was wondering if I
- 28:22Speaker 7: could get some late season turkey hunting tips in Canada. Here,
- 28:26Speaker 7: turkey's open ten days ago and he has had no luck.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I got one, thank you.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Go for it.
- 28:31Speaker 1: So you're hunting late season turkeys, you have to be
- 28:34Speaker 1: in the woods from that ten o'clock to two o'clock
- 28:38Speaker 1: hour if your state allows it. Late season hens, once
- 28:44Speaker 1: they're done doing their thing getting bread in the morning,
- 28:48Speaker 1: they will go sit on their nests and those toms
- 28:52Speaker 1: will become solo and looking for love. It's a great
- 28:56Speaker 1: time to kill late season turkey.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and turkey hunters who were smart than me, we'll
- 29:00Speaker 2: talk about how you should change your decoy set up
- 29:03Speaker 2: throughout the season, Like what were you using this weekend
- 29:05Speaker 2: seth in Montana? Here, we'd probably be considered what like
- 29:08Speaker 2: early season here, middle of the season or early season?
- 29:11Speaker 2: What are you running for decoys?
- 29:13Speaker 1: I typically don't run decoys unless I have to. I
- 29:17Speaker 1: just that's just because I just like, well, one thing,
- 29:22Speaker 1: I don't love the way I hunt a lot of
- 29:24Speaker 1: running and gunning. I just don't love carrying decoys. And
- 29:29Speaker 1: I don't know, I just like to to play the
- 29:32Speaker 1: game without decoys. I like to set up in spots
- 29:35Speaker 1: where the turkey basically has to be in shooting range
- 29:40Speaker 1: for it to see where the calling's coming from. M
- 29:43Speaker 1: So that's how I liked Hunt. I will use decoys
- 29:46Speaker 1: occasionally if I'm set up like in a big open
- 29:49Speaker 1: area or whatever.
- 29:49Speaker 2: But yeah, I think like sort of it's very general
- 29:52Speaker 2: rule of thumb. But usually your turkey decoys setups get
- 29:55Speaker 2: smaller as the season goes on. So an early season,
- 29:59Speaker 2: when birds are still really flocked up, ye, you may
- 30:01Speaker 2: have if you have the ability to do it, four
- 30:04Speaker 2: decoys out there.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:06Speaker 2: And if you're really getting late in the season spicy nachos,
- 30:09Speaker 2: it might be time to pair that down to just
- 30:11Speaker 2: a single hend or a hand in a strutter. What
- 30:14Speaker 2: else you got?
- 30:14Speaker 1: Phil Andreas is asking Chile what was your mos when
- 30:17Speaker 1: you were serving Andreas?
- 30:20Speaker 3: I was in six fifty one, which is what calm
- 30:24Speaker 3: M data networks specialist. But yeah, I did a bunch
- 30:29Speaker 3: of stuff with communications equipment, things of that nature.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Man.
- 30:34Speaker 7: All right on, Ben says, Spencer, did you hear that
- 30:38Speaker 7: Dakota Angler brought back the Apollo Meno rap as an exclusive?
- 30:41Speaker 7: You had said in the last radio live you were
- 30:42Speaker 7: in that you caught your personal best Pike on it,
- 30:44Speaker 7: but they were discontinued.
- 30:46Speaker 2: I had a few people reach out to me and
- 30:48Speaker 2: email me that that Dakota Angler is bringing back their
- 30:52Speaker 2: Apolo Mino wrap. Rapaula has so many offerings and this
- 30:56Speaker 2: was like a very specific one at a very specific
- 30:59Speaker 2: time in place, and I'm thrilled to hear that Dakota
- 31:01Speaker 2: Angler has that sort of swing to get the Mintal
- 31:05Speaker 2: Wrap back on their shelves. That's a great part of
- 31:08Speaker 2: the country to be offering that crank bait. So good
- 31:12Speaker 2: on you, Dakota Angler, and thanks for the heads up
- 31:14Speaker 2: and everyone else who reached out.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I caught my PV Pike on an x rap.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, what kind of x rap because I feel
- 31:21Speaker 2: like there's a lot there's like X wrap this x
- 31:23Speaker 2: rap that. Yeah, sometimes they'll have it was like a
- 31:25Speaker 2: little bucktail on the last.
- 31:27Speaker 1: A little bucktail it was. It was when the x
- 31:30Speaker 1: rap first came out. So yeah, whatever the og x
- 31:34Speaker 1: rap was. Yeah, I bought a handful of them for
- 31:37Speaker 1: catching bass and Maine when I was living back East.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of the x raps too,
- 31:42Speaker 2: they would have like the hollow body look, they'd like
- 31:45Speaker 2: see through them.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Yeah, this one you can see through is blue yep.
- 31:49Speaker 1: I had bucktail on it, but yeah, that was caught
- 31:51Speaker 1: my PV pike in Montana.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I miss being really tuned into like what crank baits
- 31:56Speaker 2: are are hot right now? And like what's the new
- 32:00Speaker 2: color that Rapaula came out with this year.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I don't I don't do a whole lot of crank
- 32:06Speaker 1: bait fishing. I'm more like jigging plastic type guy for
- 32:11Speaker 1: Walleye And yeah, don't do a whole lot of bass
- 32:13Speaker 1: in here. But I love it. It's fun. I just
- 32:15Speaker 1: wish there was more opportunities, which there are some good ones,
- 32:18Speaker 1: but uh yeah, I don't exactly keep up with the
- 32:22Speaker 1: the those style of baits.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it used to be really tuned in and it was.
- 32:26Speaker 2: It was totally one hundred percent something that caught more
- 32:28Speaker 2: fishermen than fish. Yeah, but I still like being very
- 32:31Speaker 2: familiar with the library of crank baits that that different
- 32:34Speaker 2: brands were offering.
- 32:37Speaker 7: We'll do one more here, well, actually people do a
- 32:39Speaker 7: light one and then a real one. What do the
- 32:41Speaker 7: crew members used to maintain their facial hair? I hate
- 32:43Speaker 7: an itchy beard, but don't enjoy the twelve year old
- 32:45Speaker 7: boy look with a bald face.
- 32:48Speaker 2: I I as someone who's like gone back and forth
- 32:51Speaker 2: between mustache and beard in the last you know, few years.
- 32:55Speaker 11: Uh.
- 32:56Speaker 2: The itchy stage to me is like a very specific time.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't remember when that is, but
- 33:01Speaker 2: it's like between weeks, I don't know, two and four
- 33:05Speaker 2: or something like that, and then it's not itchy anymore.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Is that what you like?
- 33:07Speaker 2: Your familiarity with it, Chili?
- 33:09Speaker 3: Yeah, when I when I had a big, big beard, Yeah,
- 33:14Speaker 3: Like it was like that two to four weeks, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 3: maybe a quarter of an inch long, and it got
- 33:18Speaker 3: super itchy, and then all of a sudden, it justs.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Not itchy anymore. You never think about it now. As
- 33:23Speaker 2: far as maintenance, I don't do anything. It gets the
- 33:25Speaker 2: same shampoo that my hair gets.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Tree tree sap every morning, especially freshly found in the woods.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Jili is a tail main guy. Yeah. The hair is
- 33:35Speaker 1: Maine and tail maiden.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Tail maiden tail.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Is it like a palmade or no, it's it's a
- 33:39Speaker 1: shampoo conditioner made for horses.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Now you're you're messing with its hot tip.
- 33:44Speaker 1: You don't care for those.
- 33:47Speaker 2: You have a horse shampoo conditioner in your shower right now.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Maine and tail.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Okay, you send me a picture.
- 33:53Speaker 1: I will send you a picture.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I'd like your hair a lot more chili. Now knowing that,
- 33:59Speaker 2: who told you about this idea?
- 34:02Speaker 3: No, I see, well, originally it came from the movie
- 34:06Speaker 3: Blades Glory. Oh, and he goes like, you help yourself
- 34:10Speaker 3: to the maintail all you want, but don't even think
- 34:12Speaker 3: about touching the verdic cola.
- 34:16Speaker 1: So and then like it kind of took off. And
- 34:18Speaker 1: then for me, uh, I mean, as you can tell.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Proof is in the pudding, right, good, good head of
- 34:25Speaker 2: lettuce chili.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Yeah, uh huh, it's just yeah shimmers. Okay.
- 34:29Speaker 2: So I like it Maine entail.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I do nothing for the stash, and I like to
- 34:34Speaker 1: wash the hair, like maybe once a week. We should
- 34:36Speaker 1: tell keep it greasy.
- 34:39Speaker 2: That that was the fun one. Phil. Let's hear what
- 34:42Speaker 2: this dark twisted one is.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Oh no, no, it's not.
- 34:44Speaker 7: I just meant I said real, not not like, man,
- 34:46Speaker 7: we're gonna get real. I just meant, like, that's a
- 34:48Speaker 7: real question.
- 34:50Speaker 8: Uh.
- 34:51Speaker 7: That's the fastest time you have filled a turkey tag?
- 34:54Speaker 7: You pass up the bird that comes out first light
- 34:56Speaker 7: on the first day, said he lives in a single
- 34:58Speaker 7: bird bag limit area.
- 34:59Speaker 1: That's will m I got a story that could tie
- 35:03Speaker 1: a handful of things together. We talked about please do it.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Last Saturday, we my wife and I killed some turkeys
- 35:11Speaker 1: in the morning and then we went to a different
- 35:15Speaker 1: spot and this was probably about eleven thirty ish and
- 35:19Speaker 1: got to a ridge, made a call. Turkey gobbled like
- 35:22Speaker 1: two hundred probably two fifty ish away, and within I
- 35:30Speaker 1: don't know, a couple of minutes, that thing was dead.
- 35:33Speaker 1: It just came running.
- 35:34Speaker 2: That's efficient, yep.
- 35:35Speaker 1: And it was that. It was that you know, that
- 35:38Speaker 1: mid or that late morning hour which hens went to
- 35:41Speaker 1: sit and he was lonely.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Did it ever cross your mind to pass on that bird?
- 35:45Speaker 1: So you can well my wife, My wife was shooting
- 35:47Speaker 1: on that one. I was just calling and I guarantee
- 35:50Speaker 1: it didn't pass her mind.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's never crossed my mind cross a legal turkey.
- 35:55Speaker 2: The quickest I ever killed. It was my first archery bird.
- 35:57Speaker 2: It was it was opening morning. I was set up
- 35:59Speaker 2: way too you close to the roost what would be
- 36:02Speaker 2: considered too close, but it worked out anyway. Bird came
- 36:04Speaker 2: down right off the roost, walked into my decoys and
- 36:07Speaker 2: I shot him dead. As far as passing on a
- 36:11Speaker 2: bird at first light of the day.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Nah, no, thanks, Yeah, I don't pass on turkeys unless
- 36:18Speaker 1: you jakes. I'm to the point around she jakes anymore,
- 36:20Speaker 1: but all right.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Moving on. Our next segment is One Minute Fishing.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Do I feel lucky?
- 36:28Speaker 14: We'll do you Punk, go ahead, make my cast.
- 36:35Speaker 2: One Minute Fishing is where we go live to someone
- 36:37Speaker 2: who's fishing and they have one minute to catch a fish,
- 36:39Speaker 2: and if they're successful, we'll make a five hundred dollars donation,
- 36:42Speaker 2: do a conservation group, and for the whole month of April,
- 36:45Speaker 2: our friends at Trod Unlimited are joining us for One
- 36:47Speaker 2: Minute Fishing this week. Our angler is Jesse Vidala, the
- 36:51Speaker 2: Eastern Region manager at TU. Today he's on a tributary
- 36:56Speaker 2: of the Housatonic River in Connecticut and fishing for a
- 36:59Speaker 2: donation to Trout Unlimited. Jesse, welcome to the show.
- 37:03Speaker 13: Hey guys, how you doing.
- 37:04Speaker 4: I'm sorry to give you the most chaotic and worst
- 37:06Speaker 4: audio possible, but I am quite literally next to a
- 37:09Speaker 4: racetrack at the moment.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Okay, well, someone's going to figure out very easily where
- 37:15Speaker 2: Jesse is today. Jesse, we asked Trout Unlimited to highlight
- 37:19Speaker 2: some important water sheds across the country for this segment.
- 37:22Speaker 2: So first thing tell us about the wild trout streams
- 37:25Speaker 2: of New England and their greatest threats totally.
- 37:29Speaker 13: So it does tie into where I'm standing right now.
- 37:31Speaker 4: This is the salmon Kill Creek, which is right across
- 37:34Speaker 4: from the Lime Rock Speedway. It's a wild trout tributary
- 37:38Speaker 4: that had stunted habitat and.
- 37:40Speaker 13: Tough deals with erosion.
- 37:42Speaker 4: So what we're doing largely at TU across the Northeast
- 37:45Speaker 4: is for wild trout, specifically the brook trout.
- 37:47Speaker 13: We're working on improving connectivity, removing culverts and barriers.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Have a beautiful open bridge here that we're checking in
- 37:53Speaker 4: on and that's where I'll be fishing right below. But yeah,
- 37:55Speaker 4: we're doing a lot for connectivity and improving habitat the
- 37:58Speaker 4: wild trout.
- 37:59Speaker 2: So what are some other things that TU has done
- 38:01Speaker 2: to help fisheries of the northeast.
- 38:05Speaker 4: T has been a grassroots organization that largely focuses on
- 38:08Speaker 4: educating the next generation. And today I've got about twenty
- 38:11Speaker 4: five students out here that are planting trees and a
- 38:13Speaker 4: riperran buffer.
- 38:14Speaker 13: This is an annual program where kids get out and
- 38:16Speaker 13: learn more.
- 38:17Speaker 4: That's the bread and butter of TU is teaching the
- 38:19Speaker 4: next generation about fly fishing and how important healthy cold
- 38:22Speaker 4: rivers are. So that's what we do, and it's evident
- 38:25Speaker 4: in my work today, even though I'm quite literally catching
- 38:27Speaker 4: the porch race of team moving behind me.
- 38:30Speaker 2: All right, let's talk about the fishing. What are you
- 38:32Speaker 2: targeting today and how are you doing it?
- 38:35Speaker 13: Totally so real quick.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Obviously, as a catskill dry fly angler, I'm always paying
- 38:40Speaker 4: attention to the hatches. This time of the year, we're
- 38:42Speaker 4: starting to see Hendrickson's male and female. So I'm fishing
- 38:46Speaker 4: in a merger that has both a dark Hendrickson and
- 38:48Speaker 4: light Hendrickson kind.
- 38:49Speaker 13: Of cothorax color.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Super optimistic to try and catch fish on drys on
- 38:54Speaker 4: a bluebird daylight today. So if it doesn't happen, I'm
- 38:56Speaker 4: going to shoot some of the bigger holes below for
- 38:58Speaker 4: the bigger brown trout. Usually fishing something like a small
- 39:01Speaker 4: but wiggly black marramouse streamer. Uh, something cool to get
- 39:05Speaker 4: their attention when they're hanging out low.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Okay, And when we talked to you before the show,
- 39:09Speaker 2: you were very concerned about spooking trout.
- 39:12Speaker 6: Uh.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Do you think that's going to be an issue when
- 39:14Speaker 2: you get to the water.
- 39:17Speaker 4: Uh yeah, Actually I think the cars might smook him
- 39:19Speaker 4: more than me.
- 39:20Speaker 13: But I'm walking over the right now. We're going to
- 39:22Speaker 13: see how this goes.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Okay, could even get worse.
- 39:25Speaker 13: You feel like if you don't want a lot flat fishing,
- 39:27Speaker 13: they're getting.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you're one minute of fishing will start as soon
- 39:32Speaker 2: as you make that first cast.
- 39:34Speaker 13: Uh.
- 39:34Speaker 2: He is walking through the lanes of the racetrack right now.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Headed to the water, cars zipping by, and we've.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Now lost him.
- 39:47Speaker 13: Chaotic fishing.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Okay, Jesse, are you are you set up and ready
- 39:51Speaker 2: to make your cast?
- 39:53Speaker 13: Man? I'm walking into the stream side right now.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Okay. Now, the the green, the green on the trees
- 40:01Speaker 2: in the background makes me think of morel mushrooms. Have
- 40:03Speaker 2: the kids planning? All those trees come across any mushroom patches? Yet?
- 40:08Speaker 13: Good question. We're still a few more.
- 40:10Speaker 4: I would say a week, maybe two weeks that most
- 40:12Speaker 4: pretty well closely aligned to Turkey season. We see morels
- 40:15Speaker 4: up this way. A lot of rams still out and
- 40:18Speaker 4: about on the streams.
- 40:19Speaker 13: That's a big one.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Uh yeah, we've been able to find some, so I
- 40:26Speaker 4: think pretty soon we'll start seeing morel's. I'm gonna set
- 40:29Speaker 4: you all off right where I had you before, and uh,
- 40:31Speaker 4: I'll hope for the best.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Okay. Uh, Jesse is about to make his first cast.
- 40:37Speaker 2: The timer will start when he makes that first cast.
- 40:39Speaker 2: The video and audio we're getting a little choppy and
- 40:42Speaker 2: he's got to fly in the water.
- 40:43Speaker 1: There it is.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Seth would you be on that racetrack?
- 40:51Speaker 13: There are actually light Hendricksons near the water and.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Some small Okay, you've got forty five seconds later.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Uh, probably more like could be on the river than
- 41:03Speaker 1: the racetrack.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Jesse is feeling confident. He's saying that he's fly is
- 41:08Speaker 2: matching what he's seeing.
- 41:10Speaker 1: In the water.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Thirty seconds to go.
- 41:15Speaker 13: Oh yeah, that's that.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Let let's get eat.
- 41:17Speaker 1: We're going in.
- 41:20Speaker 13: There's a natural right next to it. Hell, it's not.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Looking good, folks.
- 41:26Speaker 2: You got fifteen seconds, Jesse.
- 41:28Speaker 13: I do like that.
- 41:29Speaker 1: He's providing his own commentary.
- 41:30Speaker 13: Another clean one on street.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Okay, you got ten seconds.
- 41:35Speaker 13: Street one more. Let's do it all the way all right?
- 41:42Speaker 2: Didn't happen today for Jesse.
- 41:46Speaker 13: Them?
- 41:47Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 41:49Speaker 13: Appreciate it.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, thanks for joining us, Jesse. Good luck with
- 41:53Speaker 2: the rest of the day of fishing.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Thanks ma'am, Thanks so much.
- 41:56Speaker 13: Thank you.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Take care.
- 41:59Speaker 2: One minute. Always bring some chaos to the show, but
- 42:02Speaker 2: we'd like it. All right, here's some more chaos. Our
- 42:07Speaker 2: next segment is the Price is Right.
- 42:10Speaker 8: Oh here it comes from Mosman, Montana Media Radio's most
- 42:15Speaker 8: exciting ten minutes.
- 42:17Speaker 1: It's the Price is Right.
- 42:18Speaker 8: Yeah Morris, come on now, mister Chilliam, come on down
- 42:25Speaker 8: your hat. Two contestants on media Radios. The Price is

- 42:41Speaker 2: meat Eater universe, and you need to guess its price.
- 42:44Speaker 2: The player with the closest answer without going over will
- 42:47Speaker 2: be declared the winner. If both players go over, then
- 42:49Speaker 2: you'll both be told to try again, and the chat
- 42:52Speaker 2: should play along as well, because whoever has the closest
- 42:55Speaker 2: answer will get a shout out from Phil. All right,
- 42:57Speaker 2: there are three products on today's show. Phil tell us
- 43:01Speaker 2: about the first item up forbid.
- 43:06Speaker 7: Clicking a lot of buttons. Here, Spencer, just give me
- 43:08Speaker 7: one sec. Gotta turn off this banner. It's kind of
- 43:10Speaker 7: in the way.
- 43:12Speaker 1: I just want everyone to know that that what Phil
- 43:14Speaker 1: just did was live, that wasn't like a drop.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he brings all the energy.

- 43:24Speaker 7: from Culvers. For one month every year during Lent, Culvers

- 43:31Speaker 7: which comes from Crystal Clear Canadian Waters, is ham battered
- 43:33Speaker 7: and cook to order. Their Northwoods Walleye three piece dinner

- 43:56Speaker 2: Wisconsin location, which is where I source the price for
- 44:00Speaker 2: this dinner. That's a three piece walleye dinner from Calvers,
- 44:06Speaker 2: two sides, a soda, a warm roll and tartar sauce.
- 44:10Speaker 2: And there are some big old filets. Seth, how do
- 44:13Speaker 2: you think? How big do you think them walleyes were? Yes,
- 44:18Speaker 2: twenty plus for sure. These are some healthy.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Canada Canada.
- 44:25Speaker 2: That's that's what their website says. Now when they say Canada,
- 44:29Speaker 2: I don't know if there's like aquaculture in Canada or
- 44:32Speaker 2: if they're going out and netting some some far away
- 44:35Speaker 2: river or what the deal is, but it's it's very
- 44:39Speaker 2: well reviewed. Walleye from Calvers a three piece dinner, and again,
- 44:43Speaker 2: you boys cannot go over. If you go over, you
- 44:47Speaker 2: will get it wrong.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Look at that sandwich. Chill.
- 44:52Speaker 2: You know, every time I'm heading east on the Interstate
- 44:55Speaker 2: and I passed through Rapid City, that's the first time
- 44:58Speaker 2: I can smell Callvers. Again, that's about as far west
- 45:00Speaker 2: as they get.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say, answer, We'll leave it. Yeah, you
- 45:07Speaker 1: boys literally have to save what if we get the
- 45:09Speaker 1: right answer? Dude, Well we can't. We gotta have a

- 45:48Speaker 1: I want everyone to know if Chili wins this, I
- 45:51Speaker 1: had that first. Well, maybe you shouldn't be so, I
- 45:54Speaker 1: don't know. I'm not gonna say that that's bad. Just
- 45:59Speaker 1: stick you where your answers to your.
- 46:00Speaker 2: So you you had twelve ninety nine as well. Okay,
- 46:03Speaker 2: both of you come up with a new answer. Then
- 46:05Speaker 2: you saw Chili's Answer're gonna have you come up with
- 46:07Speaker 2: a new answer. You are both lower than the correct answer,
- 46:12Speaker 2: so we come up with the new one. They both
- 46:15Speaker 2: wrote down twelve ninety nine. Seth then change his answer,
- 46:19Speaker 2: but we're gonna make them try one more time. We
- 46:20Speaker 2: know the price is higher than twelve ninety nine. Chili,
- 46:24Speaker 2: you have your answer, I doe. Seth, you have your answer. Okay,
- 46:27Speaker 2: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Chili saying
- 46:30Speaker 2: fourteen ninety nine and Seth saying fourteen fifty. The correct
- 46:33Speaker 2: answer is twenty dollars and seventy nine cents. Giving chili
- 46:39Speaker 2: that very first point, suck it seth. Then them walleye
- 46:44Speaker 2: ain't cheap huws se. I guess not who did well
- 46:48Speaker 2: in the chat?
- 46:48Speaker 1: Phil?
- 46:48Speaker 2: Anybody get it around the right answer?
- 46:50Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 46:50Speaker 7: I haven't looked for the last thirty seconds. So we
- 46:52Speaker 7: had Derek saying nineteen ninety nine.
- 46:55Speaker 1: That was the call. Oh what his last name is?
- 46:56Speaker 2: Xanders? Xander is a European walleye. That is fantastic, Well done, Derek, Xam.

- 47:04Speaker 2: South Dakota, North Carolina, Cottonwood Lake.
- 47:07Speaker 1: I think it is eh. There you go?
- 47:09Speaker 2: All right, Phil, tell us about the second and second
- 47:11Speaker 2: item up forbid.
- 47:13Speaker 7: Well, if you prefer selling fish to buying fish, then
- 47:16Speaker 7: how about owning your very own bait shop. Lacy Marine
- 47:20Speaker 7: baiton Tackle is located at the Jersey Shore. This turnkey
- 47:23Speaker 7: business comes with all of their inventory for bait, freezer's,
- 47:26Speaker 7: a live bait tank, and a state of the art
- 47:28Speaker 7: POS system. Lacey's has been opened since nineteen sixty nine
- 47:31Speaker 7: and is a fixture of the community. I forgot that
- 47:34Speaker 7: I can't change the slide without getting the script out
- 47:36Speaker 7: of my eyeballs, and now it is gone. Where was
- 47:38Speaker 7: I but there are some things money can't buy, like
- 47:41Speaker 7: the Lacey Township Police Department Citizen Recognition Award that the
- 47:44Speaker 7: business received in twenty twenty three. Lacey Marine baiton Tackle
- 47:48Speaker 7: got the honor after its owner saved the life of
- 47:50Speaker 7: a customer who collapsed while shopping for bait.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Amazing, and Lacey's claims to have an annual revenue of
- 47:56Speaker 2: nine hundred and twenty thousand dollars and has been list
- 48:00Speaker 2: it for sale since November twenty twenty three. Seth and Chili,
- 48:04Speaker 2: what does that bait store cost? And Phil is showing
- 48:07Speaker 2: us some pictures of Lacey. That is Lacey Marine Bait
- 48:13Speaker 2: and Tackle, located at the Jersey Shore. We're looking at
- 48:16Speaker 2: some blood worms there. That appears to be one of
- 48:18Speaker 2: their hot ticket items based on Facebook.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Seth, you want to look at my answer?
- 48:26Speaker 2: Nope, you boys have an answer.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Yeah. I would love to own a bait chop someday.
- 48:32Speaker 2: That would be fun.
- 48:33Speaker 1: I think it'd be so fun, especially if you had
- 48:35Speaker 1: a bar in there too.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Where would you put that bait shop at?
- 48:38Speaker 11: Oh?
- 48:40Speaker 1: Probably like Upper Midwest. Yeah, that type of culture. I
- 48:44Speaker 1: feel like this is more like ocean culture.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Yeah, this is very marine heavy in there area. They've
- 48:50Speaker 2: got like a whole section of yacht paint in this
- 48:52Speaker 2: bait store.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I'd be wanting to, like, you know, have
- 48:56Speaker 1: a have some cheese curd or something in there, and
- 48:59Speaker 1: you know, smell like bait have Chester come walk callbers.
- 49:02Speaker 2: That's good? You boys, ready, yep, go ahead and reveal
- 49:05Speaker 2: your answers. We've got Chili saying one point three million
- 49:09Speaker 2: in Seth saying one point four million. Cheat, you're both
- 49:14Speaker 2: too high, so you'll both need to try again. Wow,
- 49:18Speaker 2: what on the too high has an annual revenue of
- 49:24Speaker 2: nine hundred and twenty thousand. Now that's revenue, not profit,
- 49:27Speaker 2: So that's uh, that's their top line number, not their
- 49:30Speaker 2: bottom line number. You guys have an answer.
- 49:36Speaker 1: This isn't trivia.
- 49:37Speaker 2: I could probably just lift this up. I suspect some
- 49:40Speaker 2: of our audiences doing that. You guys ready, yeah, go
- 49:45Speaker 2: ahead and reveal your answers. We've got Chili saying eight
- 49:49Speaker 2: sixty five and Seth saying nine hundred and thirty thousand.
- 49:52Speaker 2: They're still too high. Oh yeez, they're gonna need to
- 49:55Speaker 2: try again. We have yet to have this happen. This
- 49:57Speaker 2: place has been on the market for houses right since
- 50:00Speaker 2: November twenty twenty three.
- 50:02Speaker 1: I gotta say everyone in the chat is right there
- 50:05Speaker 1: with you guys.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Okay, too high, too high? Wow, this this bait store
- 50:09Speaker 2: may have a lot of suitors after this episode. If
- 50:11Speaker 2: you folks are willing to throw around one point four million,
- 50:15Speaker 2: it could very easily be yours. Okay, you guys ready again,
- 50:20Speaker 2: So even if he's like.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Lower, but if I if I'm over by twenty five k,
- 50:25Speaker 3: but he's under by three hundred k.
- 50:27Speaker 2: He wonder is important. You're automatically disqualified if you're over,
- 50:31Speaker 2: Are you ready? Okay? Seth is going back to him,
- 50:35Speaker 2: So it's chilling.
- 50:38Speaker 1: We're going to go. You're going.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Okay, they figured out the game. We're ready, go ahead
- 50:48Speaker 2: and reveal your answers. We've got Chili saying four hundred
- 50:51Speaker 2: and sixty thousand and sets saying four hundred and seventy
- 50:54Speaker 2: five thousand. They're still too high. They're going back to
- 50:59Speaker 2: their whiteboards. Four four attempts.
- 51:01Speaker 1: We got ourselves, so game pokes, you went to your something.
- 51:06Speaker 2: Then we've started at one point four million. We're all
- 51:12Speaker 2: the way down to under four hundred and sixty thousand
- 51:15Speaker 2: at this point, Seth and Chili are on their fourth
- 51:18Speaker 2: attempt of guessing the price of Lacey Marine to tackle
- 51:22Speaker 2: at the Jersey.
- 51:23Speaker 1: I'm just sticking.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Are you ready? Just go ahead and feel your answers.
- 51:27Speaker 2: We've got Seth that says fifty six dollars. No, that's oh,
- 51:32Speaker 2: that's five five bucks. He says five dollars. Chili says
- 51:36Speaker 2: two hundred and forty four thousand. The correct answer. It's
- 51:42Speaker 2: two hundred and seventy nine Chili.
- 51:45Speaker 1: The second point, Hey, sure with five bucks victory, that's
- 51:49Speaker 1: not bad for a tackle shop.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Hey, it could. It could be yours. Like I said,
- 51:52Speaker 2: a lot of folks in chat may be outbitting you though.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Well, here's okay, really quick.
- 51:57Speaker 7: A bunch of people started getting closer after the third
- 52:00Speaker 7: you're too high, but pit past podcast Guest two ten
- 52:03Speaker 7: right off the bat.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Alright, pass pit pass. You get that point? Bill, let's
- 52:09Speaker 2: her hear about our third item up forbid. We'll see
- 52:15Speaker 2: if Chili can get the skunk on Seth and make
- 52:18Speaker 2: him run around the office naked as his tradition nobody wants.
- 52:22Speaker 7: If you're looking to fill that bait shop with decor,
- 52:24Speaker 7: then how about an autographed Jaws poster? This movie poster
- 52:29Speaker 7: has a certificate of authenticity, meaning it's the real deal.
- 52:32Speaker 7: It measures twenty six inches by thirty eight inches and
- 52:34Speaker 7: is signed by four members of the cast plus Steven Spielberg. Actually,
- 52:38Speaker 7: I will tell you that John Williams is not a
- 52:40Speaker 7: member of the cast, but a composer of the soundtrack.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 52:43Speaker 7: The oscre wedding film turns fifty years old this year,
- 52:46Speaker 7: giving you a chance to own a piece of piece
- 52:48Speaker 7: of cinema history.
- 52:49Speaker 2: The eBay seller also offers a jockey's costume from Seabiscuit
- 52:53Speaker 2: and twenty three Disney DVDs. All right, Seth and Chili,
- 52:57Speaker 2: what does that sign Jaws poster? Cam? Who's the composer film?
- 53:02Speaker 1: John Williams?
- 53:02Speaker 2: John Williams, And I think that's how they won their
- 53:04Speaker 2: Oscar was via their music. It was not best picture
- 53:08Speaker 2: or or Best Lead Actor or anything like that. Best music.
- 53:12Speaker 3: You said that this fella has this on eBay on eBay, Okay,
- 53:15Speaker 3: So he's not trying to like sell this out, okay.
- 53:18Speaker 2: And he's also selling jockey's costume from Seabiscuit and twenty
- 53:22Speaker 2: three Disney. Gives me some thoughts, you ready, I'm ready,
- 53:29Speaker 2: go ahead and reveal your answers. We've got Chile saying
- 53:31Speaker 2: eleven thousand dollars, and Seth goes with one dollar.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Such a that's bush league correct, You're such a bush leaguer.
- 53:40Speaker 1: D I never watched the show. Yeah is right, Yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 1: but wins a lot.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but the correct answer is one hundred and ninety dollars,
- 53:50Speaker 2: giving Seth his third point, and he's quite sad first sorry,
- 53:55Speaker 2: his first point, Chili is the today's game is right?
- 54:00Speaker 2: Don't how the chat do?
- 54:02Speaker 1: Dylan Jenkins saying one seventy five.
- 54:05Speaker 7: I believe that was the closest without going over. Oh nope, nope,
- 54:08Speaker 7: Nick said, which is kind of suspiciously close.
- 54:12Speaker 2: I feel like I've heard that name during the Prices
- 54:14Speaker 2: right before Nick.
- 54:15Speaker 1: I think Nick by himself a new poster.
- 54:20Speaker 2: All right, getting that ends today's game of Prices, right,
- 54:23Speaker 2: Thanks for playing along. Everybody, remember to help control the
- 54:25Speaker 2: pet population. Have your pets spade and neuter. All right.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Our next segment is Tattoos. I regret.
- 54:36Speaker 15: Hello darkness, my old friend. I looked at my attach
- 54:42Speaker 15: lookame it such a good idea. I was drunk last
- 54:50Speaker 15: summer and the pizza.
- 54:53Speaker 1: The tattoo says the Pusson will.
- 54:57Speaker 2: Always find more beans.
- 55:00Speaker 13: What does that mean?
- 55:04Speaker 2: It's a tattoo?
- 55:07Speaker 15: I reg.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Now I'm so thrilled about today's tattoo that, for only
- 55:18Speaker 2: the second time ever, we have the person with the
- 55:20Speaker 2: regrettable tattoo joining us live here. She is now Amanda
- 55:24Speaker 2: Fairbairon Kimmerie. Welcome to the show.
- 55:27Speaker 14: Thanks thanks for having me, guys, Amanda.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Let's get some backstory before we reveal your tattoo. First thing,
- 55:33Speaker 2: when did you get this?
- 55:35Speaker 14: I got it almost probably like a decade ago when
- 55:38Speaker 14: I was a junior in college at Clemson.
- 55:41Speaker 2: Okay, And what was going on that day when you
- 55:43Speaker 2: got that tattoo?
- 55:45Speaker 16: My friend and I were having ourselves a good Saturday,
- 55:49Speaker 16: and at the time, Clemson was winning the national championship.
- 55:55Speaker 16: Everyone was getting you know, go Tigers, Go tag send tattooed.
- 56:01Speaker 14: On the inside of their lip.
- 56:02Speaker 16: It was like a new trend, I guess joggd on
- 56:05Speaker 16: and my friend and I were sitting there, I'm like,
- 56:07Speaker 16: what is just the most outrageous and ridiculous tattoo you
- 56:11Speaker 16: can think of?
- 56:11Speaker 2: Okay, that's how you landed on this idea. Have you
- 56:14Speaker 2: ever met another person with this tattoo?
- 56:17Speaker 14: No, I haven't.
- 56:18Speaker 16: I've met the hundreds of people with lip tattoos, and
- 56:21Speaker 16: like when the video of me went viral, I was
- 56:24Speaker 16: reading the comments that everyone was commenting like what their
- 56:27Speaker 16: lip tattoo that they had was, and I was really
- 56:29Speaker 16: expecting someone else to have something similar.
- 56:32Speaker 14: But no, not a soul yet?
- 56:34Speaker 2: Is this your only tattoo?
- 56:36Speaker 14: So no, I actually have.
- 56:38Speaker 16: Four other tattoos and they're actually all related to the
- 56:41Speaker 16: outdoors in some way as well.
- 56:42Speaker 2: Ah, all right, well let's reveal your tattoo and then
- 56:46Speaker 2: explain its meaning for us.
- 56:48Speaker 6: Okay, So it's eighteen oh four to eighteen oh six,
- 56:54Speaker 6: and it is, yes, eighteen o four to eighteen oh six,
- 56:58Speaker 6: and it is the dates of the was in Clark expedition.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Okay, love that? Why why the Lewis and Clark expedition dates?
- 57:06Speaker 13: I mean, when.
- 57:07Speaker 16: Sitting out, you know, on a nice Saturday with my friend,
- 57:10Speaker 16: we were thinking, what's the most outrageous thing?
- 57:13Speaker 4: What?
- 57:14Speaker 16: What else could you possibly think of other than something
- 57:16Speaker 16: having to do with history way back when that kind
- 57:18Speaker 16: of people forget after grade.
- 57:19Speaker 14: School too, you know.
- 57:21Speaker 2: So what ideas did you pass on before landing on
- 57:23Speaker 2: eighteen oh four to eighteen oh, six on the inside
- 57:26Speaker 2: of your bottom lip.
- 57:28Speaker 14: So we passed on my mom's phone number. Oh, I
- 57:32Speaker 14: think he's probably very grateful I.
- 57:37Speaker 13: Did not have that.
- 57:38Speaker 14: And then we also passed on I think it was
- 57:41Speaker 14: Bill Gates' birthday.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Oh okay, yeah, Like I said, we.
- 57:46Speaker 16: Were thinking about outrageous and random things, and my friend
- 57:50Speaker 16: got the dates of.
- 57:53Speaker 14: My calendar when it was expected to end.
- 57:55Speaker 2: She got those days tattooed on the Okay, very good.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Now what are your friends and fans think of the tattoo?
- 58:03Speaker 16: When I first got it, they just thought it was stupid,
- 58:05Speaker 16: and you know, they figured, oh, it'll fade in one
- 58:07Speaker 16: to three years whatever. Well, here we are almost a
- 58:10Speaker 16: decade later, and they still think it's just as outrageous.
- 58:12Speaker 16: But it's brought a lot of joy and laughter, so
- 58:14Speaker 16: everyone just thinks it's funny.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Now, do your other friends with lip tattoos have their
- 58:18Speaker 2: lip tattoos faded? Because I've always heard it said that
- 58:21Speaker 2: that's a thing that they fade, but then that hasn't
- 58:24Speaker 2: seemed to be a reality.
- 58:26Speaker 16: Yeah, So like that's why everyone started getting them, like
- 58:29Speaker 16: a decade ago.
- 58:30Speaker 14: Is for the room was like, oh, who cares like
- 58:32Speaker 14: it fades? In one to three years. But yeah, no, hers,
- 58:35Speaker 14: actually my friend that I got it with, Hers is
- 58:37Speaker 14: pretty faded. I think there's still a little bit left
- 58:39Speaker 14: of it, but hers is pretty faded. Mine's going strong
- 58:41Speaker 14: about do you.
- 58:43Speaker 2: Actually regret the tattoo, though, I'm going.
- 58:46Speaker 14: To say no.
- 58:48Speaker 16: If you would have told me when I got it
- 58:50Speaker 16: that it would last probably my entire life, I probably
- 58:53Speaker 16: wouldn't have gotten it then. But looking back now, it's
- 58:57Speaker 16: just brought everyone so much joy and laughter, and it's
- 58:59Speaker 16: actually the reason my husband and.
- 59:01Speaker 13: I are together.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Oh how did that come to be?
- 59:05Speaker 14: So when we met, we.
- 59:06Speaker 16: Met at a mutual friend's house for a party, and
- 59:11Speaker 16: at that said party, you know, he was there with
- 59:13Speaker 16: his boys, and he was like, I'm not going to
- 59:15Speaker 16: talk to any girls today. I'm just gonna hang out
- 59:17Speaker 16: with the guys. He told me this lady later in
- 59:19Speaker 16: our relationship. But then later on he also admitted that
- 59:24Speaker 16: the minute he found out I had that lip tattoos, like,
- 59:27Speaker 16: I'll talk to her, like she seems like a pretty
- 59:28Speaker 16: cool girl.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Wow, and now they're Mary. That's great.
- 59:32Speaker 14: Well.
- 59:33Speaker 2: Traditionally, during this segment, we shame people for having bad tattoos,
- 59:37Speaker 2: but we're not going to do that. I think it's
- 59:38Speaker 2: so damn cool, and I'm jealous I didn't think of
- 59:40Speaker 2: it first. Why didn't I come up with putting the
- 59:43Speaker 2: day to the Lewis and Clark expedition on the inside.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Of my lip. Yeah, that's like something you totally do.
- 59:48Speaker 16: I know.
- 59:49Speaker 2: But now we're talking to Amanda instead, who did have
- 59:51Speaker 2: that great idea on a drunk.
- 59:52Speaker 14: Saturday, will have the same lip tattoo.
- 59:55Speaker 2: That's right, all right, Amanda. Thank you for joining us,
- 59:58Speaker 2: and thanks for sharing your tattoo that you absolutely should
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: not regret.
- 1:00:02Speaker 14: Thanks for having me. Guys appreciate it.
- 1:00:05Speaker 13: Chili.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Do you regret regret any of your tattoos?
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Not a one?
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: How many do you have? Oh, I don't even know thirty?
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: No, not that many, almost twenty. Maybe you don't.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Regret any of them.
- 1:00:15Speaker 11: No.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: I think the only regret I have is like I
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: didn't do some bigger I don't have regrets about like, oh,
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: shouldn't have done that.
- 1:00:22Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: I have dead Man's hand here right above my watch.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: I wish I would have done that bigger.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that would have Yeah. I like that tattoo a lot.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I wish you would have.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: Done a bigger Thank you Chill.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Your tattoos are really like a lot of thought went
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: into my thoughts.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Oh, I appreciate it. Well, I did a thing that
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: most people tattoos don't do.
- 1:00:38Speaker 11: Like.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Uh, I didn't start getting until I was almost thirty
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: years old. Yeah, you know, your tattoo eras when you're
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: in college or something, and I was just too broke
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: to afford him then.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: So now I had a wiser version of me coming
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: up with bad tattoo ideas.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I like them.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Thank you, Seth. All right. That brings us to the
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: end of the show. Phil, what's the chat have to say?
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: Uh?
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: Yeah, we got a few more. Just wanted to shout
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: out Mogor, who got back to us. He says he
- 1:01:03Speaker 7: officially passed the Hungarian State hunting exam. Oh says inspired
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: by meat Eater, So good job, Mogor.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: That's on that.
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: Devin asks, well, first of all, last chance to get
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: questions in do that right now? Devin asks any good
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: recommendations or favorites for solo camping tents for hunting trips.
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: Looking forward to doing my first deer hunt later this year.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: What do you think, Seth, I have.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: It's a nemo I don't remember what model, but it's
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: just like a one person real light. It's a three season,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: so keep that in mind if you're gonna be in
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: some cold, snowy weather. But I enjoy that thing. It's
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: from super Light. I fit in it great, and yeah.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: Chili, I'm I'm a fan of the Seek outside Cimarron.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: It's a four man tent. Probably get two fully grown
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: men in there. But the cool thing about that one
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: is too it has a you can if you purchase
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: a stove, you can run a stove out of it too,
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: So if you are late season hunting, you can you
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: can have some warmth with you. Obviously, you have to
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: do some more logistics when it comes to where you're
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: going packing in wood and all that stuff. But I
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: and that thing's great in the summer as well, so
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: pretty light weight and it's a very very low profile
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: as far as packing, so that's why I like it.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Stoves are nice, Devin. I tented for most of my
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: deer hunts, and usually I'm so low I run a
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: three person tent. I find that's the right size for
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: me to be like very comfortable in there. And I'm
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: talking about car camping specifically, where I can fit a cot,
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: I can fit a little heater, I can like hang
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: up my socks and clothes to dry. Real nice. Seth
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: had brought up having a three season tent if you're
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: hunting in the fall, which sounds like you are on
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: this deer hunt. I think it's very important to have
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: a four seasons tent, and those ratings are sort of
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: done different by each company. I don't think there's any
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: like legal obligation to call it a three season tent
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: or a four season tent if it fits this certain criteria.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: But I think, Devin, if it's important to you to
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: stay warm at night and you're hunting anytime, you know,
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: from mid October on in the north, look for a
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: four season tent. And if you know you're going to
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: be by yourself three people, a three person tent will
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: keep you really comfortable. I run an ELPs Tasmanian tent.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: I've had that for five years. I really love it.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: I'm very cozy in there.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and I was thinking more backcountry stuff. But if
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: you are Karcam and go with a bigger tent, yeah,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: it's just nicer to have the extra room.
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: Phil, what else you got the only reason I'm going
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: to put this guy's name on the screen is because
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: he specifically told me how to pronounce his last name. Okay,
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: if this is kind of an ethical Chettiquette esque moral
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: conundrum here, but here we go. Brad asks, while being
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: a father of three, with food prices as high as
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: they are, is it okay to accept game meet that
- 1:03:52Speaker 7: was probably poached?
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: And how do you pronounce his last name Phil.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: With tucky in case anyone wants to look for you.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Yeah, take that game meat, Brad. You're fine. It's not
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: gonna taste any different. I don't think would you boys
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: have any if.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: You needed to.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: Feed a family of three, would you take some poached meat?
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: We don't know, So yeah, I take it.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, take that meat, Brad.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: And then and then when you're feeding it to folks,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: you can talk about conservation. It gives you a good
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: little nugget of information to share with other people.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Deniability.
- 1:04:32Speaker 13: There you go.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Nobody knows.
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: Let's see here, favorite way to cook turkey breast that
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: isn't schnitzel or nuggets, which he already loves to make.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: This is from Keith Seth.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: What are you doing with all that turkey meat?
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Well, schnitzel and nuggets might go too.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: My wife and I did a stir fry the other night,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: which was fantastic. I just kind of sliced it up
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: in like thin strips and and did that. It was great.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: Serve it over, Rice, Keith.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: Go to the meat eater dot com. On our section
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: you can search. You can put the criteria in there
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: for only turkey meat. You'll get all kinds of great
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: recipes from people who are far better cooks than us,
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: and there'll be a lot of inspiration there that's not
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: schnitzel or nuggets.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Seth.
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: This is from Will Seth. I've watched you and Steve's trapping,
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: skinning and fleshing videos. Will y'all ever do a tanning
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: follow up? Or do you have any tips right now?
- 1:05:24Speaker 7: He said he recently started and his coons always come
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: out greasy and stiff.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Hm hmm. Well, I don't do any tanning. I send
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: everything off to the tannery to get tanned professionally. I
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: just I never got into the tanning thing.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: Did you ever mess around with like quick tan? Isn't
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: that something that no? I?
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: When I was younger, I used to like kill squirrels
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: and just salt the heck at, like, stretch them and
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: salt the heck out of them.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: And where of them squirrels at? Now?
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Oh, they're probably rotted away some Honestly, I have no clue.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: I might have one or two left back of my
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: mom's house in Pennsylvania. But yeah, that was in a
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: forever type treatment. But uh, yeah, I've honestly never tanned
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: anything like legit tanned something. So I can't really help
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: you there, Phil.
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: Any experience putting electronics on a pontoon that's from Brian,
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: Not on a pontoon.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: But a lot of electronics with other boats. What do
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: you need to know? Larance? I'd go with the bird,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: but I kind of it just depends. Hummingbird is better mapping,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: and I.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Bet on a pontoon it's a little more simple, like
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: you know, plumbing your electronics to the bottom than it
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: would be with a traditional v hall boat. But I
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: don't know, Brian, Uh a lot of electronics on ponteens
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. Uh. Max Bart's father in law. While
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: I dan, he he guides out of upon tune. Oh yeah,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: he probably has lots of experience with rigging pontoon boats.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: But as far as I'm concer, I think a pontoon
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: boat is a great fishing vessel.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Gives you a lot of surface space to walk around
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: in there.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: And I imagine if you're if you're rigging up a
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: pontoon with expensive electronics, that you're trying to be a
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: good family man. Brian. You're trying to have one foot
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: in both worlds of good fishing and taking the kids
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: out on the river with the lake on a Saturday.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: It's good on you, Brian.
- 1:07:28Speaker 7: We'll do one more here, but first Brian who won
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: the hot tip offs that he got busy at work
- 1:07:32Speaker 7: and missed it live, but he just popped in and
- 1:07:34Speaker 7: says thanks so much. So yeah, Brian, be on the
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: lookout for something from Corey here if he hasn't already
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: messaged you already. Well, oh yeah, that's a pro go
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: producer tip Brian. The last one from Ben Spencer. Have
- 1:07:45Speaker 7: you ever tried paddle fishing by Yankton? He said he's
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: from the area and wants to get his first spoony.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: I have done it, Ben. It was It was like
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: some of my favorite outdoor memories as a kid. The
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: fishing is even in the band had years. It's very
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: good by Yanked and that's where a dam is on
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: the Missouri River. It's a last dam on the Missouri River,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: and a lot of fish get stacked up there. It's
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: a lot of fun. It's not a thing where you
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: have to be up super early or stay out till
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: the last minute of daylight. There's really really good camaraderie
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: with it. Ben and I assume if you're a resident,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: you get access to better water than everyone else, and
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: so enjoy that. Ben, keep buying those preference points. Know
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: what the slot is and how to measure it. Folks
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: are very willing to give tips on how to do it,
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: how to rig your weights and your your treble hooks.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: So don't be afraid to ask someone if you need
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: some help. But enjoy it. I miss it a lot,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: all right. That brings us to the end of the show.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: Thanks everyone for watching and listening. We'll see you guys
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: back here in one week.
