- 0:49Speaker 2: And thank you very much for being with us in
- 0:51Speaker 2: the locker room here on the Steelers Audio Network alongside
- 0:54Speaker 2: Max Starks. I'm rob king fields. You're getting cleaned up.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And they did a great job.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Hey now, because that's today right, you can't even tell
- 1:02Speaker 3: it's there.
- 1:02Speaker 2: No, they did a great job patching up the field,
- 1:05Speaker 2: their beautiful fields here at Saint Vincent College. Another good
- 1:09Speaker 2: crowd in attendance, you know, cheering, you know, Will Howard
- 1:12Speaker 2: made a great throw up to see him and everybody
- 1:14Speaker 2: you know, jumped up and cheered.
- 1:15Speaker 4: It was fun stuff, exciting stuff. We looked for.
- 1:19Speaker 3: We looked for the big moments, right yeah, and our
- 1:22Speaker 3: fans are definitely very in tuned and ready for those.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Uh. Aaron Rodgers through a long ball and a sprawling
- 1:28Speaker 2: attempt up the left sideline into the end zone for
- 1:31Speaker 2: Roman Wilson did not.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Hang on Roman Wilson. Gotta get that.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Gotta get when we talk about, hey, there's moments where
- 1:37Speaker 3: we're putting trust in you.
- 1:38Speaker 4: That's one. He had the one on one. It was
- 1:40Speaker 4: cover three and he.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Had a step on the dB and then he brought
- 1:45Speaker 3: the ball, hauled it in but did not survive the ground.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So Riley, now Atkowskin, I'm bringing him up only because
- 1:51Speaker 2: it was evident they were doing a special teams drill
- 1:54Speaker 2: and he jumped and he turned around and ran off
- 1:57Speaker 2: and he knew he was done. So is that has
- 1:59Speaker 2: that been standard in with all the coaches or is
- 2:02Speaker 2: that is that one of those little stickler attention to
- 2:05Speaker 2: details thing. That's that's that Mike McCarthy's on.
- 2:09Speaker 4: That's that standard issue?
- 2:10Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, yeah, especially a special teams like like your
- 2:13Speaker 3: margin era is less than zero. Right, So if you
- 2:15Speaker 3: do that and you were gonna have Danny in your
- 2:17Speaker 3: ear chewing twenty seven pieces of of double bubble yelling
- 2:21Speaker 3: at you the entire time, they were going to replace
- 2:23Speaker 3: the guy in the drill. So this is just kind
- 2:25Speaker 3: of more modus operandi, especially like if you mess up
- 2:28Speaker 3: once boom, you're gone, next guy up and you just
- 2:31Speaker 3: move forward. But I think for Mike McCarthy, this is
- 2:36Speaker 3: part of that detail oriented nature yep, like you should
- 2:38Speaker 3: know that you messed up and that you're out of
- 2:40Speaker 3: the drill.
- 2:40Speaker 4: I shouldn't have to tell you. Yeah, turn jock off.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 2: By the way, less than zero maybe my favorite Elvis
- 2:47Speaker 2: cuss tell As song. Yeah, great song. So anyway, we
- 2:50Speaker 2: were talking about Mike McCarthy. So one of the things
- 2:54Speaker 2: that was brought up at the press conference this morning was, okay,
- 2:59Speaker 2: so how do you make sure in a physical game
- 3:04Speaker 2: your guys are physically ready when you're not And again physical,
- 3:09Speaker 2: it's not contact sport, max.
- 3:10Speaker 4: It is a.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Colligious exactly, So how do you make sure they're ready
- 3:14Speaker 2: for those collisions? And Mike McCarthy said, look, we just
- 3:18Speaker 2: don't bring guys to the ground there's there's some hitting
- 3:21Speaker 2: going on out there. In fact, you know, tackling and breaking,
- 3:26Speaker 2: breaking tackles is one of our Steelers six.
- 3:29Speaker 4: And so somebody was like, okay, so what are the
- 3:32Speaker 4: Steeler six? What are the other parts to that six?
- 3:35Speaker 2: So here here is Mike McCarthy's answer to that question
- 3:38Speaker 2: this morning at the press conference.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Primary fundamental. We call it the Steeler six. You know,
- 3:43Speaker 5: we have six fundamentals Steeler football of emphasized. Obviously, tackling
- 3:48Speaker 5: and breaking tackles is one of those six. So those
- 3:51Speaker 5: six fundamentals are emphasized daily. We have a period just
- 3:54Speaker 5: fourteen fundamentals to emphasize that. So, you know, doing it
- 4:00Speaker 5: for a long time, I have great confidence and frankly,
- 4:04Speaker 5: evaluating the team last year, you know, I think that's
- 4:07Speaker 5: definitely I would say, is an asset, you know, moving forward.
- 4:10Speaker 5: So it is a veteran team. But we have preseason
- 4:14Speaker 5: games too, you know, so that's that's always part of it.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Who plays the preseason who doesn't, So I mean all
- 4:19Speaker 5: those things are discussed and I think that's why I'll
- 4:22Speaker 5: continue to say there's a systematic approach to everything we do.
- 4:25Speaker 5: You know, we have a plan. But the plan has
- 4:27Speaker 5: proactive adjustice that it gives us in a systematic mindset.
- 4:31Speaker 4: You share the other five? Do you share?
- 4:33Speaker 2: The other five have.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Ball security, obviously taking care of it, extracting it. Ball
- 4:37Speaker 5: security is number one. Blocking, obviously, sustaining break you know,
- 4:41Speaker 5: obviously getting off blocks, already hit, tackling about big plays
- 4:44Speaker 5: as a fundamentals. You can't win in the National Football
- 4:47Speaker 5: League without big playsers, you know, each game. If you
- 4:50Speaker 5: look at the league average average is about thirty six
- 4:52Speaker 5: a game. So, uh so you get you got it.
- 4:54Speaker 5: You gotta emphasize it. The finish, the pursuit and finish
- 4:58Speaker 5: is clearly a big part of that too. But and
- 5:02Speaker 5: one that we you know, spend a lot of time in,
- 5:04Speaker 5: particularly because the way we have to train more than
- 5:06Speaker 5: everyone else seas and is the mannerisms. Mannerisms in disguise
- 5:10Speaker 5: is a big part of pro football. I think it's
- 5:12Speaker 5: particularly coming from the quarterback position. You know my history,
- 5:15Speaker 5: you spend time there. But you know, the games evolved
- 5:17Speaker 5: that way. We're both sides of the of the ball
- 5:20Speaker 5: are doing it a lot more here and seeing it
- 5:22Speaker 5: more on special teams. So those are the six you know,
- 5:26Speaker 5: fundamentals of stair the football.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Wow.
- 5:30Speaker 2: You know, uh, this is clearly stuff that he's thought out.
- 5:34Speaker 2: It's clearly a philosophy that he wants to bring to
- 5:38Speaker 2: the team. You know, one of the things that a
- 5:41Speaker 2: lot of people have talked about observers around the team
- 5:44Speaker 2: is the attention to detail that Mike McCarthy has in
- 5:49Speaker 2: his approach to football and expect from his team as well.
- 5:53Speaker 3: And I think this is, like you said, it goes
- 5:55Speaker 3: with what I'm I'm coining as the academic approach to football.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Right.
- 5:58Speaker 3: This is football through two of to football three oh three.
- 6:01Speaker 3: This is upper level football if you're taking the class right.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And this is one of those things where you see
- 6:07Speaker 3: the Steelers six, it's like it's like a poster board
- 6:09Speaker 3: the teachers.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I wonder if it's gonna be off.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think it's probably up in the team room, maybe
- 6:16Speaker 3: not in the locker room, but I think it's definitely
- 6:18Speaker 3: something that I'll go investigate further. But you have to
- 6:22Speaker 3: believe if you're calling it the Steelers six, like all
- 6:25Speaker 3: those things have to be. And you know, we had
- 6:27Speaker 3: a similar thing where we had kind of five points
- 6:29Speaker 3: of emphasis every week on offensive side of the football
- 6:31Speaker 3: that Bruce Arians introduced. You know, you had to have
- 6:34Speaker 3: you know, penalty free. You had to be at least
- 6:37Speaker 3: ten exposive plays a game. You have to also pre
- 6:41Speaker 3: snap you know, no pre snap penalties. We kind of
- 6:44Speaker 3: had these different areas. You had to hit running backs,
- 6:47Speaker 3: you know, have to be an efficiency. Offensive line has
- 6:51Speaker 3: to have you know, the least amount of ems, and
- 6:53Speaker 3: you kind of and win the time of possession. Like
- 6:55Speaker 3: there was these tenants that he had and so to
- 6:57Speaker 3: have this and kind of this be a team ethos.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I think it's something that's probably gonna be up and
- 7:02Speaker 3: it all makes sense. I mean, they're all tangible things
- 7:05Speaker 3: and things. When you put them in writing, it makes
- 7:07Speaker 3: it easier to know if you're above or below the line.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Right, So, did you do your job or not?
- 7:12Speaker 2: One of the things that I so, I was sitting
- 7:15Speaker 2: next to Brooke prior at the press conference this morning,
- 7:19Speaker 2: and when it was done, I said, Brooke, did he
- 7:21Speaker 2: say three to six big plays or did he say
- 7:26Speaker 2: thirty six big plays? And then I asked Jerry do
- 7:28Speaker 2: Lak Brooks said, I don't know. I wasn't sure because
- 7:32Speaker 2: I wasn't sure. And then I was talking about it
- 7:34Speaker 2: with Jerry, Well, three to six seem too little and
- 7:37Speaker 2: thirty six seem too big. But again the other thing
- 7:41Speaker 2: is what do you define as a big play? Do
- 7:44Speaker 2: you define it as a run of ten or more yards,
- 7:46Speaker 2: a catch of twenty more yards is or different ways
- 7:48Speaker 2: to define it. So in that one, I was listening
- 7:49Speaker 2: very carefully to hear it back again. Thirty six big
- 7:52Speaker 2: plays a game. So he knows the number that means.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Plays a game.
- 7:56Speaker 3: What happened, and that's and he has to remember that
- 8:00Speaker 3: is offense, defense, and special teams. Right, So you're splitting
- 8:04Speaker 3: up between so and just I said our goal on
- 8:06Speaker 3: offense from week to week, where Bruce Herrins was ten.
- 8:09Speaker 3: So you know you think about that if you're breaking
- 8:12Speaker 3: it up into three different segments twelve apiece, right, that
- 8:15Speaker 3: you have to be able to create. And I think
- 8:17Speaker 3: the exposive players might be fifteen yards of more in
- 8:19Speaker 3: a reception, right, so ten yard run, fifteen yard reception,
- 8:24Speaker 3: then probably a sack, strip fumble, big explosive play on
- 8:28Speaker 3: the return game, or a big or a big stop
- 8:31Speaker 3: you know on the coverage game.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Yeah, how do you define big play exactly?
- 8:36Speaker 3: So, yeah, that would be one that I had that,
- 8:38Speaker 3: and Mike pursuit and I actually talked about it because
- 8:40Speaker 3: he had to say that. He's like, now he said
- 8:41Speaker 3: three to six. I'm like, well, we weren't really get
- 8:44Speaker 3: I said thirty six. Yeah, it just goes to show.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And I was like, in a game between and you say, also,
- 8:51Speaker 3: that's three segments, but then there's the other team, right,
- 8:54Speaker 3: So to get thirty six between two teams and essentially
- 8:57Speaker 3: six segments of football is not that much. Right when
- 8:59Speaker 3: you break it into that, you know six times six
- 9:02Speaker 3: is thirty six. So you're saying if each team has
- 9:05Speaker 3: thirty or twenty, you know it, I'm sorry, eighteen apiece, right,
- 9:09Speaker 3: and the split between three segments, like, that's not that big.
- 9:12Speaker 3: But you want to win the battle of thirty six, right.
- 9:14Speaker 3: You want to be on the positive side. You want
- 9:16Speaker 3: to be at nineteen to twenty, and the other teams
- 9:18Speaker 3: at sixteen are below.
- 9:19Speaker 2: So if you get ten on offense, they get ten
- 9:22Speaker 2: on offense. That's twenty even less snaps on special teams.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Let's say it's two each on special teams. Now you're
- 9:27Speaker 2: twenty four. Now it means each team gets six on defense.
- 9:31Speaker 2: So you're right again, how you.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Define the past defense could probably be in that how
- 9:35Speaker 3: do you define sack a tackle for loss?
- 9:37Speaker 4: Like? So, I think it would be good if somebody follows.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Up and asks what exactly a you're determining as a
- 9:43Speaker 3: big play, because I think that also helps make that
- 9:46Speaker 3: thirty six look more conceivable.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Right, I'm fascinated to know that. Yeah, fascinatings.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I would love to ask him, but I'm not in
- 9:53Speaker 3: the press conference because'm getting ready for.
- 9:54Speaker 4: You're up here there.
- 9:55Speaker 3: That's right, you're up there and I'm down there, and
- 9:57Speaker 3: it's trusting. I'm trusting you, Robb to raise your hand
- 10:00Speaker 3: and talked to Mike McCarthy.
- 10:01Speaker 2: But it is and look, I'm sure there's no question
- 10:05Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin had attention to detail. It's just we are
- 10:08Speaker 2: and again, like you said, we are used to the tomlinisms.
- 10:11Speaker 2: You know, I was talking to somebody on the baseball
- 10:15Speaker 2: side of my job and talking about we're talking about it,
- 10:19Speaker 2: you know one of our our analyst kids, and you
- 10:22Speaker 2: know how aggressive he was playing football, And I said, well,
- 10:25Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin always said I'd rather say woe than sick
- 10:28Speaker 2: of them. Yeah, no, you know so, so so that's
- 10:30Speaker 2: a good. So we have all these things we've heard
- 10:32Speaker 2: from Mike tom and we heard him for two decades
- 10:35Speaker 2: of Mike Tomlin talking about things, and his philosophy on
- 10:38Speaker 2: football shown through in some of those things.
- 10:41Speaker 4: This is a very uh, this is.
- 10:43Speaker 2: A a different way of presenting it. You know, it's
- 10:49Speaker 2: still football, right, and we'll see still see how it's
- 10:52Speaker 2: manifested out there. But it's exciting just to hear it
- 10:56Speaker 2: in a different way because look, I always was excited
- 10:59Speaker 2: to hear Mike I would talk because he had he
- 11:01Speaker 2: was an interesting guy the way he phrased things. Had
- 11:04Speaker 2: he had and talked about.
- 11:05Speaker 4: PhD and wordsmanship. Yeah, that's right. That's so. It's like
- 11:09Speaker 4: we're essentially listened to we've listened to a professor for.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Nineteen years, right, preach theory, philosophy and kind of broad
- 11:16Speaker 3: abstract culture. Whereas now you have a teacher, right that's
- 11:19Speaker 3: giving it to you directly as it is. There's no
- 11:22Speaker 3: room for interpretation this this I'm talking plainly to you.
- 11:26Speaker 3: However you digest this is what it means at the
- 11:29Speaker 3: end of the day.
- 11:29Speaker 4: My word ends all.
- 11:31Speaker 3: So you're getting teacher versus professor, practical application knowledge versus
- 11:34Speaker 3: theoretical and you had to figure out the application. That's
- 11:37Speaker 3: what I look at it as is coming from a
- 11:39Speaker 3: family of teachers.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a really good analogy.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And you know, the other thing is that like much
- 11:45Speaker 2: like we're discussing, it's it's very funny because you know,
- 11:49Speaker 2: I'm looking at the Rogers Center now from out of
- 11:51Speaker 2: our window, and Max was directly behind me up on
- 11:54Speaker 2: the set on the top of the hill with Mike Pursuda.
- 11:56Speaker 2: The whole thirty six or three to six, that conversation
- 11:59Speaker 2: was going on in both those places. Well, one of
- 12:02Speaker 2: the things that you know, I normally sit right next
- 12:05Speaker 2: to Bob Labriola, and there are people in the press
- 12:08Speaker 2: box here that are being entertained at here at Saint
- 12:12Speaker 2: Vincent College, and so today there wasn't anybody up there,
- 12:16Speaker 2: so that allowed me to spread out my notes. I
- 12:17Speaker 2: was going to take some notes, and I was going
- 12:19Speaker 2: to jot these things down, and I'm like, this practice.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Is happening way too fast.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I can't I'm I'm jotting something down and I'm looking
- 12:28Speaker 2: up and I'm missing something. And I'm not the only
- 12:30Speaker 2: one who said that. Other reporters have said the exact
- 12:33Speaker 2: same thing.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Dulac Jerry because they're all asking each other, well, hey,
- 12:38Speaker 3: who did this? Is always like I have to have
- 12:39Speaker 3: a spotter, and you got to work in tandem as
- 12:41Speaker 3: a group, Like somebody has to be constant, that's right,
- 12:44Speaker 3: The other ones have to be constant note takers.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it is happening. These things happen really really fast
- 12:50Speaker 2: out there. So again it's just did they happen faster
- 12:54Speaker 2: than I'm like Tom Win? Sure, but just that extra
- 12:57Speaker 2: ten seconds here, you know, five second zer between plays
- 13:01Speaker 2: in between drills. It's just a different pace. Yeah, to
- 13:05Speaker 2: practice out here, they're shorter.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And they're shorter practices too, so it's like so everything
- 13:10Speaker 3: is like come packed it in. So it's like almost
- 13:13Speaker 3: like you have to pick your poison, right, Am I
- 13:15Speaker 3: gonna watch the entire practice and try and remember in
- 13:18Speaker 3: my head? Or am I gonna try and write everything
- 13:20Speaker 3: down and I'm probably gonna miss two to three items
- 13:22Speaker 3: per per time that I put my eyes down on
- 13:24Speaker 3: the pad.
- 13:25Speaker 2: So I'm reminded of you know, and again they're both football, right,
- 13:30Speaker 2: and they're both uh you know, great coaches who won
- 13:34Speaker 2: Super Bowls and had success. It reminds me of remember
- 13:37Speaker 2: the group of the Ramones, the punk group.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you know a lot. You know a lot
- 13:40Speaker 4: of quick little songs.
- 13:42Speaker 2: And somebody plain to their drummer they said, hey, you
- 13:45Speaker 2: guys don't have any long songs. Guys said, oh no,
- 13:47Speaker 2: we have lots of long songs. We're just playing really
- 13:49Speaker 2: really fast.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 2: So that's kind of what we're seeing here in practically
- 13:53Speaker 2: just two different ways of going about things, so plenty
- 13:57Speaker 2: more to get to. We want to dive more into
- 13:59Speaker 2: the Mike McCarthy philosophy, because, let's face it, that's what
- 14:02Speaker 2: we're gonna be watching for a while here for the
- 14:05Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Steier is the Mike McCarthy philosophy, and again we're
- 14:09Speaker 2: delving into what he's sharing with us as as journalists
- 14:13Speaker 2: and radio show hosts and play by play and colored
- 14:16Speaker 2: people and all the other sort of things. So we're
- 14:18Speaker 2: gonna get to more of this when we continue in
- 14:20Speaker 2: the locker room here on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 14:24Speaker 1: This is live coverage of twenty twenty six Steelers Training

- 15:09Speaker 6: on the Steeler's Audio network, the field is being tended to.
- 15:13Speaker 4: What is that thing?
- 15:14Speaker 3: Max is a lot more that looks like a lawnmower
- 15:17Speaker 3: that is a huge, huge and.
- 15:19Speaker 4: It keeps all the grass carrier behind it. Yeah, that's exactly.
- 15:21Speaker 4: I don't think that thing's gonna have to be emptied out.
- 15:23Speaker 3: That's not a day that's technically a riding lawn more.
- 15:27Speaker 3: But that's a riding lawn more on steroids. It's a
- 15:29Speaker 3: it's like a golf cart. Actually it's a bigger, big way.
- 15:31Speaker 3: It's a workman cart.
- 15:32Speaker 4: It's a workman cart, thank you, a workman cart dragging
- 15:35Speaker 4: behind a gigantic trimmer. Yeah.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I wondered if they were like seating the grass, But
- 15:41Speaker 2: I guess that's a that's a mower.
- 15:43Speaker 3: That looks like a mower. It looks like because he's
- 15:45Speaker 3: leaving like a little bit of a trail behind him. Yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 3: all right, so I'm think of keeping the grass, you know,
- 15:50Speaker 3: nice low and even beautiful.
- 15:53Speaker 4: The fields are beautiful.
- 15:54Speaker 3: I had a seating, you'd have to you'd have to
- 15:55Speaker 3: go around like we've seen them in the past where
- 15:57Speaker 3: they bring the scene and then they had a little
- 15:59Speaker 3: like opera thing that puts it into the ground a
- 16:01Speaker 3: little bit. Yeah, so this this definitely looks more like
- 16:06Speaker 3: it's the suck cut right of lawn drimmers.
- 16:11Speaker 2: You know, there's something about a grass field.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Did you grow up playing on grass or after turf?
- 16:17Speaker 4: I lived in Florida. There was no such thing as AstroTurf.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 3: It was only grass and even in college at the
- 16:23Speaker 3: University of Florida, only grass Bermuda grass.
- 16:26Speaker 4: That it is.
- 16:27Speaker 3: I was allergic to it all were you it? I
- 16:29Speaker 3: probably could have done better in my in my in
- 16:31Speaker 3: my allergy ridden self, if I played.
- 16:34Speaker 2: They couldn't find anything that get They got you allergy
- 16:36Speaker 2: shot weekly.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Really oh, I took alergiy shots every week and then
- 16:39Speaker 3: one time I had a hitch moment, uh where they
- 16:42Speaker 3: put the wrong dose in and my face and everything
- 16:46Speaker 3: just blew up. My wife they had to send me
- 16:49Speaker 3: home with an EpiPen. My wife had to come pick
- 16:51Speaker 3: me up from work. I was like in the Steelers,
- 16:54Speaker 3: Oh okay, Yeah, they gave me the wrong dose, and
- 16:56Speaker 3: I was I was sitting there. They're like, okay, he
- 16:58Speaker 3: might have anaphylactic shock. Uh, anything else gets it there
- 17:02Speaker 3: because we gave them the wrong dose. So yeah, I've
- 17:04Speaker 3: definitely had those touching aulmos.
- 17:06Speaker 4: We have. My whole career played only on grass and
- 17:08Speaker 4: had to do shots every week.
- 17:10Speaker 2: So how do you like, how do you mow the
- 17:11Speaker 2: lawn or whatever?
- 17:12Speaker 4: Out? And I never had lawn? Do you have lawn? Now? No?
- 17:15Speaker 4: Because I live in the mountains and I live in
- 17:17Speaker 4: the desert.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Knew the desert, but yeah, it's like on a hill,
- 17:21Speaker 3: I mean hill, but you know it's part of a
- 17:23Speaker 3: mountain range, right, the foothills of a mountain range. So
- 17:25Speaker 3: I live on the hill. So I have rocks, rocks
- 17:28Speaker 3: and cacti. And is it all grass you're allergic to?
- 17:32Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 17:32Speaker 3: I'm allergy to every version of grass. Wow, yeah, every
- 17:35Speaker 3: version of grass. So and my daughters are allergic to
- 17:37Speaker 3: so they know I passed it on, so they so
- 17:40Speaker 3: they're finally in their maintenance cycle where they only have
- 17:43Speaker 3: to go once a month now. But yeah, but I
- 17:45Speaker 3: because I had such high and they played volleyball and softball.
- 17:49Speaker 3: The good thing about softball, my daughter's a pitcher. Uh,
- 17:52Speaker 3: all dirt infield always, yeah, always in softball. Baseball has
- 17:57Speaker 3: the grass and then you have the mounds separate. But
- 17:59Speaker 3: in softball, a dirt in the infield and then you
- 18:01Speaker 3: get grass in the outfield.
- 18:02Speaker 2: I guess I've never thought about that.
- 18:04Speaker 4: So she has to pitch almost yeah, yeah, she.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Has to be Oh she plays one of the bases,
- 18:07Speaker 3: she plays second place. Yeah, but yeah, it would it
- 18:10Speaker 3: bothered her if she played in the outfield. I mean,
- 18:12Speaker 3: it probably would if she's diving. I mean, granted at
- 18:14Speaker 3: her age, she's eleven, so not a lot of people
- 18:16Speaker 3: hitting dingers out to the outfield that often. Usually it
- 18:19Speaker 3: rolls through because your shortstop has missed it, or your
- 18:22Speaker 3: second basement's out of position and you have the running
- 18:25Speaker 3: you get a roller. But she's not diving to catch
- 18:28Speaker 3: anything right now. Older, she probably might have to if
- 18:30Speaker 3: she played outfield at that age.
- 18:31Speaker 2: By the way, if if you have a good pitcher.
- 18:36Speaker 2: No balls are being hit to the outfield, No balls
- 18:38Speaker 2: are being hit anywhere.
- 18:39Speaker 4: No. And and she's one. She she's ice cold when
- 18:41Speaker 4: she comes out there.
- 18:42Speaker 2: So you know, we're digressing here for a moment. But
- 18:45Speaker 2: having seen a little bit of that, that fast pitch
- 18:48Speaker 2: activity with my own daughter, it is, Uh, the two
- 18:52Speaker 2: most important positions are pitcher and catcher.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Absolutely, that's it.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Everybody else can be like almost could be like a
- 19:00Speaker 2: cardboard cutout. But if somebody gets on, you've been that
- 19:04Speaker 2: catcher better viable. The cat they're better.
- 19:06Speaker 4: You better be able to hit second base on Yeh,
- 19:09Speaker 4: there'll be two most important Uh. Okay, so let's let's
- 19:12Speaker 4: get any this point. We're back to the sport of
- 19:15Speaker 4: football here.
- 19:16Speaker 2: So we were talking about Mike McCarthy and his Steelers six.
- 19:20Speaker 2: He had a couple other well, he had a lot
- 19:22Speaker 2: of fascinating things to say. Again, just talking about things differently,
- 19:25Speaker 2: and when you hear him talking, you understand, you know
- 19:28Speaker 2: where the philosophies come from and then how that's manifested
- 19:33Speaker 2: out here in the practice field. So a lot of
- 19:35Speaker 2: discussion about like you were talking about, you know, position,
- 19:39Speaker 2: flexibility to play. Uh, the X, the Y, the Z
- 19:44Speaker 2: receiver positions, for example, because you get into two minute
- 19:47Speaker 2: drills and fans might be saying, okay, well that's only
- 19:50Speaker 2: the last two minutes of the game. So Mike McCarthy
- 19:52Speaker 2: today was talking about how the fact that seventeen games
- 19:57Speaker 2: on average eight come down the last series of the
- 20:01Speaker 2: game eight. That's incredible.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Max.
- 20:04Speaker 2: And by the way, Mike Tomlin is always great about that, right,
- 20:07Speaker 2: always really really good at one score games. But but
- 20:11Speaker 2: and so I'm sure you had different ways of doing that.
- 20:14Speaker 2: These are again just different ways of presenting and talking
- 20:17Speaker 2: about it. He said, eight games. He goes, we're the Steelers,
- 20:20Speaker 2: We're gonna get everybody's best shot. That might be ten
- 20:22Speaker 2: out of seventeen games for the Steelers. And then you
- 20:26Speaker 2: understand why the philosophy if you better play the X,
- 20:29Speaker 2: Y Z, why the philosophy of we're gonna work a
- 20:31Speaker 2: lot on two minute drills. They were working on the
- 20:35Speaker 2: lateral drill yesterday. You know, you have that last play
- 20:39Speaker 2: of the game, you throw it out city. Yeah, you're
- 20:42Speaker 2: trying to ladder all your way down the field and
- 20:44Speaker 2: and you know, like the the col Stanford game and
- 20:46Speaker 2: do all those kind of things. Why because of that
- 20:51Speaker 2: statistic and that bit of knowledge, you know, sort of
- 20:55Speaker 2: dictating what you're gonna do here in a practice field
- 20:57Speaker 2: and dictating how you're gonna you know, present things to
- 21:00Speaker 2: your team as well.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think that's one of the keys.
- 21:04Speaker 3: You know, it's operations is what it comes down to. Yeah,
- 21:08Speaker 3: how do you how do you operate under pressure? The
- 21:11Speaker 3: more we do it, the less pressure it becomes. And
- 21:14Speaker 3: we talked about this earlier, second nature just reacting and
- 21:18Speaker 3: not having to think about it.
- 21:20Speaker 4: We rehearses said, we're in the first two days of practice.
- 21:22Speaker 3: They've run two minute drill to culminate practice both days, right,
- 21:27Speaker 3: and it's been different situations.
- 21:28Speaker 4: You got the guy on the bullhorn eight third and
- 21:30Speaker 4: twelve and twenty seven second. We've got to have a
- 21:32Speaker 4: touchdown to win it.
- 21:32Speaker 3: They have all these different scenarios that they're bullhorning out and.
- 21:36Speaker 4: You have to be ready.
- 21:37Speaker 3: You have to be able to go when there's a
- 21:38Speaker 3: completion in bounce, boom, right on the line, get the
- 21:41Speaker 3: ball back to the referee. None of that kind of
- 21:43Speaker 3: hot dogging it. You know, we had that, We had that.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I'll tell you a specific situation Minnesota Ben's last year,
- 21:51Speaker 3: and we had the and we had the drive, the
- 21:53Speaker 3: two minute drive to go ahead and win it. Well
- 21:56Speaker 3: we had old maple Tron there. I forgot now forgot
- 21:59Speaker 3: his name, but I mabele Tron stuck in my head
- 22:02Speaker 3: because of good old Craig wolf Lee giving it, giving it,
- 22:04Speaker 3: giving everybody a nickname. You know, he was kind of
- 22:07Speaker 3: like talking and putting the first down. I was like, no, man,
- 22:10Speaker 3: we got twenty seven seconds, get get on the ball.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Stop show.
- 22:13Speaker 3: But and then he dropped the ball and then the
- 22:14Speaker 3: dude kicked it, so you lost about five to six seconds.
- 22:17Speaker 4: And then even though Ben's was still able to make it,
- 22:19Speaker 4: try to hit firemooth.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Split in two defenders and then missed his hands. Just
- 22:23Speaker 3: imagine the game ended on that. If you had those
- 22:25Speaker 3: five to second seven seconds left, you might have had
- 22:28Speaker 3: one more shot at going for the touchdown. Like all
- 22:30Speaker 3: those little situations matter in the in the process. And
- 22:34Speaker 3: I think that's something that you know, the more you
- 22:37Speaker 3: do it here, the more reactive you can be in game,
- 22:39Speaker 3: unless you have to think about it because you know that,
- 22:41Speaker 3: Oh my job is if I caught the ball, I
- 22:43Speaker 3: get down in bounds. I can't get out of bounds,
- 22:45Speaker 3: get it right back to the run, to the line
- 22:46Speaker 3: of scrimmage, give it to the referee to set it,
- 22:48Speaker 3: and then go get in my position whatever.
- 22:50Speaker 4: The quarterback barks out yep. So it was uh, it
- 22:54Speaker 4: was uh, Chase, there we go, There we go. I
- 22:58Speaker 4: try to Chase.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I was trying to look this up here while we
- 23:00Speaker 2: were talking. I believe when they traded him to the Bears.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Is that the pick that got Joey Porter Junior, if
- 23:05Speaker 3: I'm not mistake, Yes, it was number one overall in
- 23:08Speaker 3: the second round. Was is really the thirty second pick
- 23:10Speaker 3: because the Dolphins lost their first round of that year.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Was Yeah, that's a pretty good trade.
- 23:14Speaker 2: So again Mike McCarthy talking about the Steelers six, the
- 23:19Speaker 2: ball security and you know, the tackles and breaking tackles,
- 23:22Speaker 2: the big plays, all these other different things blocking, you know,
- 23:27Speaker 2: the finishing games. He talked about that mannerisms and the
- 23:30Speaker 2: different things special teams to go into that Steeler six.
- 23:33Speaker 2: So one of the things he broke down in great detail. Again,
- 23:38Speaker 2: this was very interesting, I thought, was the different aspects
- 23:44Speaker 2: of a play. And here's what he had to say
- 23:48Speaker 2: about what happens, you know, pre snap two point three seconds,
- 23:52Speaker 2: and then after two point three seconds, the anatomy of
- 23:55Speaker 2: a play.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Anatomy of a play, you know, and there is the
- 24:00Speaker 5: first part of a play. So everything that goes on
- 24:03Speaker 5: in the pre snap up until the ball snap, you know,
- 24:05Speaker 5: the specifics, the mannerism, disguise, that's why, that's why it's
- 24:08Speaker 5: a fundamental the cadence, the substitution patterns, you know, the
- 24:12Speaker 5: ability to get get this personnel and quickly in the
- 24:15Speaker 5: red zones. So you have to practice all those little
- 24:18Speaker 5: things now because it's going to show up in preseason game.
- 24:20Speaker 5: It's going to show up when you get out there
- 24:21Speaker 5: for the first time with the ninety million roster. So
- 24:24Speaker 5: so you got the pre snap. But then if you go,
- 24:26Speaker 5: if you watch this as you watch film, you study
- 24:28Speaker 5: the film, you'll see in the first two point three
- 24:30Speaker 5: seconds that's really the actually that's the execution battleground. That's
- 24:34Speaker 5: where really the play gets established in the first two
- 24:36Speaker 5: point three So that's another time block. So and then
- 24:39Speaker 5: above two point three two point five, now you get
- 24:42Speaker 5: into extended play. Okay, so now we're talking about extended plays,
- 24:45Speaker 5: which is what big plays, big play opportunities, which is
- 24:49Speaker 5: another still er fundamental. So that's that's the way my
- 24:52Speaker 5: brain works. That's the way I've learned it through the
- 24:54Speaker 5: as of a quarterback in my time this league. And
- 24:57Speaker 5: that's why we train our team. So all our situation emphasis,
- 25:00Speaker 5: you know, really is broken down every specific play and
- 25:03Speaker 5: how we can train in those in those little heal
- 25:07Speaker 5: segments and in our and hopefully as I expressed this,
- 25:11Speaker 5: you know, hopefully hopefully you see that in our practice structure.
- 25:16Speaker 3: What do I think it's more like two point seven
- 25:19Speaker 3: to three point one when it comes to quarterback.
- 25:24Speaker 4: I mean, but yeah, you would love to see it.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I mean, if you're getting at two point three to
- 25:27Speaker 3: two point five your upper echelons of quarterback rely that's time.
- 25:31Speaker 3: That's Tom Brady back in New England, where you're operating, Hey,
- 25:35Speaker 3: we got to hit the slot. That's when you can
- 25:36Speaker 3: get guys. Because guys are still warming up into it.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Your pass rush doesn't hit home because a pass rush
- 25:42Speaker 3: is built and designed. Two point seven to three point
- 25:45Speaker 3: one is where the pass rush hits home. That's how
- 25:47Speaker 3: much time it takes for a guy to clear a defender,
- 25:50Speaker 3: get open and then square up the quarterback. And then
- 25:52Speaker 3: a quarterback has to extend with his legs beyond that.
- 25:55Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean that that I wish I had
- 25:59Speaker 3: that during my career.
- 26:00Speaker 4: I had zero racks allowed.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Yeah exactly, Yeah, because we we we were in the
- 26:05Speaker 3: four point five to four point seven five point one.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Sometimes Ben Ben Ben with with stiff arm, a defensive
- 26:11Speaker 3: end extended another second and a half.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Uh we yeah, yeah, two point three. That's that's modern
- 26:17Speaker 4: modern NFL.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Back when I played, I mean, you were like, okay,
- 26:21Speaker 3: we got three seconds to four seconds that you need
- 26:23Speaker 3: to hold on for dear life, and then after that
- 26:26Speaker 3: it's it's bonus time.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I rarely remember Ben getting sacked in those situations,
- 26:30Speaker 2: but it seemed like once you got past that certain point,
- 26:34Speaker 2: he was gonna run around.
- 26:35Speaker 4: I guess probably later in his career, maybe got caught behind,
- 26:38Speaker 4: he had to drag him down.
- 26:39Speaker 3: It wasn't like it wasn't gonna be one guy was
- 26:42Speaker 3: gonna take him that. He was gonna take multiple hits
- 26:44Speaker 3: and then he was gonna twist around and then he
- 26:46Speaker 3: might fall down trying to get out of a shoe
- 26:48Speaker 3: string tackle or something. But yeah, now Ben's not going
- 26:52Speaker 3: and you know, yeah, definitely the triple decks, I mean,
- 26:55Speaker 3: you could throw in everything.
- 26:56Speaker 4: I mean, he did it all.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, so you know the quarterback position has transitioned.
- 27:01Speaker 3: I would say the evolution of the pass rusher has
- 27:04Speaker 3: changed a lot schematics on how they get those guys
- 27:06Speaker 3: and the guys that fill those positions more hybridized. So
- 27:09Speaker 3: you have little more undersized guys that are now rushers
- 27:13Speaker 3: that are tougher for bigger offensive line. That's why your
- 27:14Speaker 3: offensive line are getting a little bit slimmer.
- 27:17Speaker 4: But yeah, it's.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Very interesting to go inside the mind of McCarthy and
- 27:23Speaker 3: see how he's processing this and how he's judging a
- 27:26Speaker 3: victory versus a loss on any given play by position,
- 27:29Speaker 3: group and by individual player.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Did you win your one on one battles? And that's
- 27:34Speaker 4: why I.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Think it's also important to know what does he consider
- 27:36Speaker 3: a big play. If you're trying to get a play
- 27:39Speaker 3: done in one point two point three seconds, that's very
- 27:43Speaker 3: quick snap judgments and your receiver I better beat the
- 27:46Speaker 3: guy off the ball. I mean, and that's man coverage.
- 27:49Speaker 3: We're not even talking about his own because if you
- 27:50Speaker 3: get into a cover two situation Cover three that two
- 27:54Speaker 3: point three seconds, your wide receiver might be even with
- 27:57Speaker 3: the dB and now you're hoping that he's going to
- 27:59Speaker 3: burn pass to him to be able to make that
- 28:01Speaker 3: anticipatory throw versus.
- 28:03Speaker 4: A known throw on Max if we're even I'm leaving,
- 28:06Speaker 4: that's a wide receiver man traved hey single high, let
- 28:09Speaker 4: it fly. I mean, there's a lot of them out there.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know, and again, look, coaches are always
- 28:17Speaker 2: going to do we have to avoid pre snap penalties, right,
- 28:20Speaker 2: we have to have clean substitutions, you know, we have
- 28:25Speaker 2: to be able to get rid of the ball quickly.
- 28:26Speaker 4: We have to be able to protect our quarterback.
- 28:28Speaker 2: These are just you know, again, I'm not saying that
- 28:33Speaker 2: this is the reinvention of the wheel. I'm just saying
- 28:36Speaker 2: this is a different way to explain things in a
- 28:39Speaker 2: different emphasis on things that we're going to see the
- 28:42Speaker 2: practice field and that we're going to see hopefully when
- 28:46Speaker 2: the game rolls around. Like it's just it's just you know,
- 28:50Speaker 2: some of it might be saying the same stuff in
- 28:53Speaker 2: a slightly different way, but some of it is a
- 28:56Speaker 2: slightly different way of doing things as well.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Yes, and I go back to this is academia. This
- 29:03Speaker 3: is the academic approach to football. And the more that
- 29:06Speaker 3: you repeat a lesson, the better the student is at
- 29:09Speaker 3: when it comes to test time, right, the reiteration of information.
- 29:12Speaker 3: That's why he doesn't call it install. He calls it recall. Right,
- 29:15Speaker 3: you know, because we've already learned this, I shouldn't have
- 29:18Speaker 3: to reinstall it. I should only have you recall it.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Like we've done the work in the OTAs in the
- 29:24Speaker 3: off season when guys have been here, we've taken that
- 29:26Speaker 3: extra time so that by the time we get here
- 29:29Speaker 3: we should be rolling through. You've had access to the
- 29:32Speaker 3: playbook since we left OTAs up until we get to camp,
- 29:36Speaker 3: so I don't need to re install. I don't need
- 29:40Speaker 3: to repeat the subject as it was. It's more like
- 29:42Speaker 3: a broad overview of study review when we get down
- 29:45Speaker 3: to the field, and then, like you said, the extra
- 29:47Speaker 3: cameras now give you a more in depth look so
- 29:49Speaker 3: you can have deeper level conversations in those meetings. Throughout
- 29:52Speaker 3: the day, we have the talk and walk that they
- 29:54Speaker 3: call them. We're going to walk through all the stuff
- 29:56Speaker 3: slow before we get to the field, and we're going
- 29:59Speaker 3: to talk through every little nuance so that when we
- 30:00Speaker 3: get on this field, like you said, it's it's ripping
- 30:03Speaker 3: and running and that's what it is. And that's why
- 30:05Speaker 3: we can't get all of our notes down because they're
- 30:07Speaker 3: ripping and running, because that's just how he wants this,
- 30:11Speaker 3: so that they become second nature. And like you said,
- 30:14Speaker 3: Mike Tomalin has his own way of doing things, Mike
- 30:16Speaker 3: McCarthy has his own way. You're not reinventing the wheel,
- 30:19Speaker 3: but you're reinventing the way that you communicate what the
- 30:23Speaker 3: function of the wheel is. Right, Yes, it's just simply
- 30:27Speaker 3: practical application of theory versus theoretical uh, you know, references
- 30:33Speaker 3: to what the actual practical is. So it's just a
- 30:36Speaker 3: different way of digesting it. And Coach McCarthy speaks plainly,
- 30:39Speaker 3: and like you said, I mean his press conferences are
- 30:43Speaker 3: very to the point, like he's going to expound, so
- 30:46Speaker 3: that you're when you leave the press corson outside of
- 30:48Speaker 3: three six and thirty six, you're going to know exactly
- 30:51Speaker 3: what he's thinking in this process and you could have
- 30:54Speaker 3: a better appreciation to carry over it, carry that over
- 30:58Speaker 3: to the field and watch him dictate how the practice
- 31:01Speaker 3: is going to go. He doesn't want anything being new,
- 31:04Speaker 3: he doesn't want frenzied response. He just wants phrenetic energy.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:09Speaker 3: He wants guys moving around fast because they know what
- 31:11Speaker 3: they're doing, not moving around fast because they don't know, right,
- 31:13Speaker 3: and they think this is what you're supposed to be doing.
- 31:15Speaker 3: He wants you to know. He doesn't want you to
- 31:18Speaker 3: have to think.
- 31:19Speaker 2: It's going to be interesting. It's already been interesting. It's
- 31:22Speaker 2: going to continue to be interesting, as is this Steelers team.
- 31:25Speaker 2: More to come as we wrap up today's edition.
- 31:28Speaker 4: A lot more.
- 31:28Speaker 2: I want to talk a little bit more about Michae
- 31:30Speaker 2: McCarthy and his philosophy and his background and something really
- 31:34Speaker 2: interesting that he said before, but he reiterated again at
- 31:38Speaker 2: the press conference. We're going to get to when we
- 31:40Speaker 2: continue here in the locker room and this Steer.
- 31:42Speaker 4: There's Audio Network.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Is live covering up twenty twenty six Steelers Training Camp

- 32:34Speaker 2: Wrapping up this second show in the Locker Room from
- 32:38Speaker 2: La Trobe here on The Star's Audio Network alongside Max Starks,
- 32:42Speaker 2: I'm rob king two thirds. We're two thirds, Max, Yeah,
- 32:45Speaker 2: we are. We need Missy Matthews to.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Complete us exactly. She completes the circle. She completes the circle,
- 32:50Speaker 4: the Circle of trusts.
- 32:52Speaker 2: So thank you for being with us, thank you for
- 32:55Speaker 2: being members in the locker room, thanks for listening during
- 32:58Speaker 2: the course of the season where we have a lot
- 33:00Speaker 2: and lots of fun not only doing this show but
- 33:02Speaker 2: also doing the play by play and color and sidelines
- 33:06Speaker 2: of the Steelers football games. So I just wanted to
- 33:09Speaker 2: go over again. I'm going to make this very quick
- 33:13Speaker 2: for people that might not be familiar with some of
- 33:17Speaker 2: the ins and outs of it. Mike McCarthy's career, let's
- 33:20Speaker 2: start with the NFL. He became the Chiefs quarterbacks coach
- 33:25Speaker 2: in ninety five, ninety five through ninety eight, and he
- 33:28Speaker 2: became the Packers quarterback coach in ninety nine. Then he
- 33:31Speaker 2: became the Saints offensive coordinator forty nine, Ers offensive coordinator,
- 33:35Speaker 2: Packers head coach, Dallas head coach, Steelers head coach. I
- 33:39Speaker 2: can only speak well, I think I could speak broadly
- 33:44Speaker 2: here just knowing, Like, for example, my own profession, my
- 33:47Speaker 2: first job was as a producer, and so when I'm
- 33:50Speaker 2: doing my work, there's a lot of that influence that's
- 33:53Speaker 2: still here many many years later, the influence of being
- 33:57Speaker 2: a producer. First, are we on time with this segments
- 34:00Speaker 2: going the way we want?
- 34:01Speaker 4: What's up?
- 34:02Speaker 2: You know, all those kind of things that other people
- 34:04Speaker 2: who are on air might not think about, right, but
- 34:06Speaker 2: that influenced the way I think about it. Well, Mike
- 34:08Speaker 2: McCarthy said that, you know that that quarterback coach in him,
- 34:15Speaker 2: that those early days because influenced what he's done and
- 34:20Speaker 2: his number one goal is to make the quarterback successful.
- 34:26Speaker 2: That's how the offense runs. Again, is this groundbreaking philosophy. No,
- 34:32Speaker 2: But if it's a point of emphasis, again, it can
- 34:35Speaker 2: be a nuanced difference between what you do and the
- 34:39Speaker 2: way you approach your team and the way you approach
- 34:41Speaker 2: your offense and the way somebody else does.
- 34:43Speaker 3: And let's just be frank, this is the first time
- 34:46Speaker 3: in the fifty five years of head coaches coming through
- 34:50Speaker 3: Pittsburgh that we've had an offensive minded coach. Yep, Chuck
- 34:53Speaker 3: Nole was a defensive coach, Bill Kuerr was a defensive coach.
- 34:57Speaker 4: And Mike Tomlin was a defensive coach.
- 34:58Speaker 3: So this is the first time we're really an offensive
- 35:01Speaker 3: minded approach to a team that's had an identity based
- 35:04Speaker 3: off of its defensive tenacity. So that's gonna be a
- 35:09Speaker 3: departure from the norm. Already on top of having the
- 35:12Speaker 3: fourth coach in the better part of half a century, right,
- 35:16Speaker 3: so you know you're getting these different approaches, and so
- 35:19Speaker 3: I think it comes off as novel to us because
- 35:22Speaker 3: we just haven't seen it. And to hear a coach
- 35:25Speaker 3: like you said, defensive minded coaches once again, is this
- 35:28Speaker 3: my offensive side being a little snobbish and tooting my
- 35:31Speaker 3: nose up.
- 35:31Speaker 4: In the air.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Probably, But defenses see things more plainly because they're highly reactive.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Offense has to be proactive. We have to dictate the
- 35:40Speaker 3: fight to the defense, and so there's a different mindset
- 35:43Speaker 3: when you're looking at being the proactive one versus the
- 35:47Speaker 3: reactive one. Right, defense doesn't know the snapcount offense does. Right,
- 35:52Speaker 3: they can only react to tendencies that they've seen, but
- 35:56Speaker 3: they don't know what's going on. The offense knows what's
- 35:58Speaker 3: going on and what they want to do versus this defense.
- 36:02Speaker 3: So you see the different tactical deployment of quote unquote.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Philosophies and thought processes in this.
- 36:10Speaker 3: So it's just it's a fun process because, like you said,
- 36:13Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy's going to give you plane brare bones. Here's
- 36:17Speaker 3: how we're going about it. We have a methodical approach
- 36:20Speaker 3: because when you're the offense, you're dictating, so you have
- 36:23Speaker 3: to be methodical. Defense can change from play to play.
- 36:27Speaker 3: What personnel gets deployed determines what defense we have to run,
- 36:30Speaker 3: and then what blitz we can and can't do, what
- 36:32Speaker 3: coverage we can and can't run. You're not going to
- 36:35Speaker 3: run cover two versus thirteen personnel, right, you know, But
- 36:40Speaker 3: the offense is like, I don't have to make my
- 36:42Speaker 3: thirteen personnel fit cover two. No defense has to adjust
- 36:46Speaker 3: on the fly. We are the ones that come out
- 36:49Speaker 3: with a premeditated approach to this because we know what
- 36:51Speaker 3: our play calls are there's a reactionary So you have
- 36:54Speaker 3: to be more abstract on defense because you don't know
- 36:57Speaker 3: what's going to be thrown at you. You can see
- 36:58Speaker 3: the personnel grouping in the soom, but they line up different.
- 37:01Speaker 3: We talked about this the accordion style last year of
- 37:03Speaker 3: Arthur Smith. Right, thirteen personnel they can turn to eleven.
- 37:06Speaker 3: The defense has to be able to match that, right,
- 37:08Speaker 3: because if they come out in goal line or six
- 37:10Speaker 3: to two defense and you've got all these guys spread
- 37:13Speaker 3: out at eleven, you're gonna be caught with your pants down.
- 37:16Speaker 3: So you have to be more fluid. You don't have
- 37:18Speaker 3: to be as fluid. You can be more rigid on offense.
- 37:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Defense is like to think they can dictate to the offense,
- 37:26Speaker 2: and in some ways they can, I mean if they
- 37:29Speaker 2: if they can beat the other guy what they're trying
- 37:32Speaker 2: to do. But again that's you go back to square one.
- 37:36Speaker 2: What are you trying to do? Well, Yeah, we're trying
- 37:38Speaker 2: to beat you at what you're trying to do as
- 37:40Speaker 2: opposed the other way around. What position, Max does the
- 37:43Speaker 2: field general play in football?
- 37:46Speaker 4: Oh, it's the most important, right, I mean quarterback?
- 37:48Speaker 3: Yeah, quarterback is the field general and then no, linebacker's
- 37:51Speaker 3: the next one.
- 37:52Speaker 4: Yes, but but is that he is.
- 37:55Speaker 2: They can say what they want and they can analogize
- 37:57Speaker 2: if they want, But the field general is not the
- 38:00Speaker 2: middle linebacker. It's not the strong safety, it's not the
- 38:03Speaker 2: outside linebacker. It's the quarterback. Much to your point, why
- 38:08Speaker 2: because they're the ones doing to dictating.
- 38:10Speaker 3: Yes, they're the ones that have the strategy and they
- 38:13Speaker 3: know what's supposed to be accomplished. Right, defense, disruption, mayhem,
- 38:19Speaker 3: chaos and forcing a team out of their nature, which
- 38:23Speaker 3: you can call dictating, Yeah, you call dictating, but it's
- 38:26Speaker 3: more it's a pleasant surprise when.
- 38:30Speaker 4: It does happen.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Esoteric dictation.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Yes, exactly dictating, you know, by situation. But like you said,
- 38:39Speaker 3: every time you step on the field, of the twenty
- 38:41Speaker 3: two guys present that can step on that field, only
- 38:45Speaker 3: one is controlling everything else. Right, the quarterback calls the play.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Offensive players now have to adjust to what the quarterback
- 38:54Speaker 3: has just called. Defenses then have to adjust off of
- 38:56Speaker 3: what the offensive players have just lined up in and
- 39:00Speaker 3: then what they moved to. And then you have cues
- 39:03Speaker 3: that give you hints. But it's not an open book
- 39:06Speaker 3: test right, you still have to study and.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Be ready for whatever that is. And here's the other thing.
- 39:12Speaker 3: There's four to five options on any given pass play
- 39:15Speaker 3: that the quarterback can go to, and you can't cover
- 39:17Speaker 3: all of them. There's going to be a weakness somewhere,
- 39:19Speaker 3: and that's what the offense's job is to do, is
- 39:21Speaker 3: to find that weakness, whether it's giving the quarterback time
- 39:24Speaker 3: to scan the field or whether it's emotion that then
- 39:27Speaker 3: puts you in a position of strength to run the football.
- 39:30Speaker 3: And the defense is reactionary. They're never in the proactive
- 39:35Speaker 3: position to give you that. They might get to a
- 39:38Speaker 3: position of equal strength, but they will never be in
- 39:41Speaker 3: an advantageous position, you know.
- 39:43Speaker 2: And you can parse out the definition of this just quickly.
- 39:46Speaker 2: I want to remember when I think wal Terris was
- 39:48Speaker 2: the pit coach and defensive defensive lineman for Boston College
- 39:54Speaker 2: defensive end. I think he went on to play for
- 39:56Speaker 2: the Giants. I can't remember, but a good, real, good
- 39:58Speaker 2: pass rusher and they would move him around and he
- 40:02Speaker 2: would line up on the opposite side of the tight end. Right,
- 40:06Speaker 2: great philosophy. We're gonna have him. He's too fast for
- 40:09Speaker 2: these tackles. We don't want him getting chipped. So you
- 40:14Speaker 2: know what Walt Harris did. They would come out.
- 40:16Speaker 4: In the tight end set this back day they had
- 40:19Speaker 4: tight ends, there's normal. They wait.
- 40:21Speaker 2: They'd wait to see which side he lined up on,
- 40:23Speaker 2: and then just before the snap they'd moved the tight
- 40:26Speaker 2: end over to the other side every single time. So
- 40:30Speaker 2: now you're dictating where that tight end is going to
- 40:33Speaker 2: line up. But are you really dictating to play because
- 40:36Speaker 2: they just dictated back to it so.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Exactly so you get to a position of equal strength.
- 40:40Speaker 2: That's right, never advantageous, that's right then, and then what's
- 40:43Speaker 2: happening now they're doing something that you have to react
- 40:45Speaker 2: to back exactly where it was.
- 40:47Speaker 4: So just quickly in a couple.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Of minutes here that we have remaining, max, how are
- 40:54Speaker 2: we going to see the difference between an offensive coach
- 40:58Speaker 2: and a defensive coach? Are we can you answer this
- 41:00Speaker 2: in two minutes? Does this need to wait till till
- 41:02Speaker 2: tomorrow's show?
- 41:03Speaker 4: Yeah? I mean, I hear it. I'm gonna try it.
- 41:06Speaker 4: I'm gonna try and expound.
- 41:07Speaker 3: In an expeditious manner. You're just gonna see more attention
- 41:11Speaker 3: to the offense. I think you know before you look
- 41:15Speaker 3: at the head coach, and the head coach has been
- 41:16Speaker 3: that master manager, or he's had an emphasis, right, he's
- 41:19Speaker 3: had a hand into it. Mike McCarthy is an offensive
- 41:23Speaker 3: coach that also has a hand in the offense. We
- 41:25Speaker 3: have not seen that from the head coach before. We've
- 41:28Speaker 3: watched the other places, right, we watched the Cliff Kingsbury's
- 41:30Speaker 3: of the world, watch the Sean mcvays of the world
- 41:32Speaker 3: do those type of jobs, but we've never had it
- 41:35Speaker 3: here in Western pa here at Saint Vincent College for
- 41:38Speaker 3: the Pittsburgh Stealers organization, we have not seen that in
- 41:40Speaker 3: modern times. So it's going to be different, and I
- 41:43Speaker 3: think you see a height in production when more emphasis
- 41:46Speaker 3: is paid towards it. And what has been the question
- 41:48Speaker 3: the last handful, if not longer years, when is the
- 41:52Speaker 3: offense going to run the ball?
- 41:53Speaker 4: When is the office going to do this?
- 41:54Speaker 3: When are they going to produce the points that we
- 41:57Speaker 3: think are necessary? Well, this is going to be the
- 41:59Speaker 3: first because we went and got an offensive coach. So
- 42:02Speaker 3: can this be done? Can you get to that level
- 42:05Speaker 3: of production where you're looking at a team and not
- 42:08Speaker 3: necessarily saying apples to apples, there's Cincinnati Bengals, right, because
- 42:12Speaker 3: I think it's a different personnel, it's a different era
- 42:14Speaker 3: for a lot of those guys. But you know, we
- 42:17Speaker 3: know the defense is good and we brought in a
- 42:19Speaker 3: quality guy that you don't have to micro manage. And
- 42:22Speaker 3: now can that attention be paid to the offense because
- 42:24Speaker 3: we've done it in the draft. We have put a
- 42:26Speaker 3: lot of resources into offensive players over the last four years, right,
- 42:30Speaker 3: for sure, three first round offensive offensive tackles along, right,
- 42:35Speaker 3: and then you think about second, third rounds to offensive
- 42:37Speaker 3: pieces have been added, whether it's been a running back,
- 42:40Speaker 3: whether it's been a wide receiver, a center. Right, a
- 42:45Speaker 3: lot of resources, but you didn't really deploy those resources.
- 42:48Speaker 4: You kind of put it off. Oh, let's bring Arthur
- 42:50Speaker 4: Smith in, Oh.
- 42:51Speaker 3: I can't remember the other guys and mister Canada, Oh
- 42:54Speaker 3: Canada over there.
- 42:55Speaker 4: And try to score eighteen and we'll take care of
- 42:57Speaker 4: the rest.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, like we just need to are enough, right,
- 43:01Speaker 3: But no, it's like, no, can we go all gas,
- 43:03Speaker 3: no break on the offensive side of the ball and
- 43:04Speaker 3: put up forty thirty five and then your defense is
- 43:07Speaker 3: getting a blow and we know what they can do
- 43:09Speaker 3: if they have a lead. They can they can put
- 43:12Speaker 3: they can put the stranglehold on you, because the number
- 43:14Speaker 3: of times we did it almost by accident, you know,
- 43:17Speaker 3: we've we've had those moments. You can get into shootouts
- 43:19Speaker 3: every once in a while, but now when you're dictating
- 43:21Speaker 3: the action, you have the weapons and you have a
- 43:24Speaker 3: coach who wants to deploy them and has a philosophy
- 43:26Speaker 3: that's offense first.
- 43:28Speaker 4: This something is going to be new.
- 43:29Speaker 3: I can't wait to see it because I think it's
- 43:31Speaker 3: something we haven't seen. So therefore it's kind of a
- 43:33Speaker 3: wait and see. But you're holding your breath and you're
- 43:36Speaker 3: hoping that that's what it's going to be and what
- 43:38Speaker 3: their intention was.
- 43:38Speaker 4: We're bringing Mike McCarthy in. Gonna be exciting, it really is.
- 43:41Speaker 2: And uh again, these these times are flying by Max,
- 43:45Speaker 2: these shows because there's just so much to get to. Yeah,
- 43:48Speaker 2: but that's it for today. We're gonna get to much
- 43:51Speaker 2: more coming up over the next couple of days, and
- 43:54Speaker 2: there's a break on Sunday. Back again next week from
- 43:57Speaker 2: the trope. Up next, you're gonna go into with Matt
- 44:00Speaker 2: Williamson and Wes Euler for Max Starks.
- 44:04Speaker 4: I'm rob king.
- 44:04Speaker 2: We thank you for being with us today in the
- 44:06Speaker 2: locker room here on this year there's Audio Network
