- 1:24SPEAKER_06: Welcome to the Overclocked Remix Podcast, the best source for OC remix music and news that you can listen to while rescuing a princess from a tortoise.
- 1:33SPEAKER_06: Even though this is episode number eight, its possibilities are infinite.
- 1:37SPEAKER_06: My name is Zach, and I earnestly enjoyed the Mario edutainment title, Mario's Time Machine, as a Child, because it was the closest thing to a video game I was allowed to play on a school night.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: I've learned that this is a challenging time of year to record a podcast.
- 1:54SPEAKER_06: Yours truly does not live in a house with central air, and my tiny home office tends to be the warmest in the house just because it gets the most sun.
- 2:03SPEAKER_06: And now I can't have the fan or a C running.
- 2:06SPEAKER_06: Any fan you hear is just my desktop PC.
- 2:10SPEAKER_06: So this record is hot.
- 2:14SPEAKER_06: Our intro music this month is The Strange Green Pipe from the Super Mario 64 album Portrait of a Plumber by Mike Audio.
- 2:54SPEAKER_06: Dark Flame Wolf's Star Fox remix album is getting close.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: It's currently in the mastering phase and will be submitted to OCR soon.
- 3:01SPEAKER_06: 30 tracks spread across two discs of Star Fox goodness.
- 3:05SPEAKER_06: We don't have a heck of a lot of Star Fox remixes.
- 3:08SPEAKER_06: Across the entire series, we've got just 15.
- 3:12SPEAKER_06: Zelda Breath of the Wild by itself has that meant.
- 3:16SPEAKER_06: There was some sort of technical snafu which caused a couple of recently released tracks to have audible skipping.
- 3:22SPEAKER_06: You heard some of it on this very podcast.
- 3:25SPEAKER_06: The two tracks affected are At the Drop of a Coin Flip from Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket and Dreamy Ring Around the Forest from Silent Hill 4.
- 3:35SPEAKER_06: Go grab fresh copies of those for your collection.
- 3:38SPEAKER_06: Darksword is spinning the multi-album Final Fantasy V series The Fabled Warriors up again.
- 3:44SPEAKER_06: If nothing else, you'll know the song See You Next Time, Water, from Volume 2 of The Fabled Warriors, because I use it as the outro music of every episode.
- 3:54SPEAKER_06: Volume 3 will be Fire.
- 3:56SPEAKER_06: There's a new Project Comms sub-forum specifically for organizing album projects.
- 4:02SPEAKER_06: You probably don't need to care about this unless you're leading an OCR album, but hey, maybe one of you will do that.
- 4:08SPEAKER_06: Dark Sword is continuing to make serious improvements to the forum experience on the site.
- 4:12SPEAKER_06: If you miss old school forums, there's never been a better time to check them out.
- 4:17SPEAKER_06: OC remixer Adrian Gravity Gauntlet is putting out feelers for a Halo remix album.
- 4:22SPEAKER_06: The album's production is being timed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Halo 3.
- 4:27SPEAKER_06: And did that make anyone else feel decrepit?
- 4:30SPEAKER_06: If I close my eyes, I can still taste that Halo 3 mountain dinner.
- 4:35SPEAKER_06: While the album is timed for Halo 3, remixes for any and all Halo games are welcome.
- 4:40SPEAKER_06: If you have any interest, head on over to the forums.
- 4:44SPEAKER_06: Our news music this month was Super Mega Ultra Pipe House by DDR Kirby ISQ from the Super Mario RPG album Window to the Stars.
- 4:54SPEAKER_06: Now let's hop in the warp pipe to our new releases.
- 4:57SPEAKER_06: First up is Dreamy Ring Around the Forest from Silent Hill 4.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Whispering hand in hand.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Just like children like to do.
- 13:14SPEAKER_06: Especially since I've never played any Silent Hill game and I have no context to go by.
- 13:19SPEAKER_06: I do think the flute sets it apart though, and boy oh boy, am I a sucker for rock organ.
- 13:25SPEAKER_06: It was a treat to get this much of it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_06: Every single performance on this track is great, so let's name all of them.
- 13:32SPEAKER_06: The Man PF did arrangement, sequencing, mixing, electric guitar, and vocals.
- 13:36SPEAKER_06: Zach Chapman played bass.
- 13:38SPEAKER_06: Earthkid also did vocals.
- 13:41SPEAKER_06: Triple B Music played acoustic guitar.
- 13:43SPEAKER_06: Sean R.
- 13:44SPEAKER_06: Hansen plays the organ.
- 13:46SPEAKER_06: Last but not least, Gamer of the Winds brought the winds.
- 13:49SPEAKER_06: Flute this time.
- 13:50SPEAKER_06: Up next, we've got Emmunator and Zach Parrish with And There Was Light from FTL Faster Than Light.
- 18:29SPEAKER_06: Sort of uplifting and spacy.
- 18:32SPEAKER_06: Really masks how frustrating the game itself can be.
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: One of those, well, maybe next time I'll get lucky and won't have a rock alien beam onto my ship and murder everyone, sort of games.
- 18:41SPEAKER_06: That incredible guitar solo just sort of drops in out of nowhere and it's gorgeous.
- 18:46SPEAKER_06: Zach Parrish did that solo and also programmed the bass and addition guitars.
- 18:51SPEAKER_06: Emmunator did everything else.
- 18:53SPEAKER_06: The voice clips are from NASA's public domain archives.
- 18:57SPEAKER_06: Specifically, these are from the Apollo 8 mission.
- 19:00SPEAKER_06: Those are real astronauts you're hearing.
- 19:02SPEAKER_06: My favorite NASA audio snippet isn't included, and that would be the Floating Turd from Apollo 10 because I am a child.
- 19:11SPEAKER_06: But these voice clips are a really nice touch anyway.
- 19:14SPEAKER_06: Surprising to hear they were a last-minute edition because the voice clips are so essential to the track.
- 19:21SPEAKER_06: Up next, a surprisingly upbeat Shadow the Hedgehog remix from JN Wake, Follow the Tornado.
- 22:13SPEAKER_06: Jay and Wake is basically synonymous with Killer Synthellos, and that's what we get here.
- 22:17SPEAKER_06: And for a game that has this reputation of being darker and edgier, it's a really cheery upbeat remix.
- 22:23SPEAKER_06: In honor of Shadow the Hedgehog's E for Everyone Ten and Up Rating, allow me to say it is damn good.
- 22:30SPEAKER_06: I really dig that bouncy bass line that drives the whole track.
- 22:34SPEAKER_06: Okay, that is enough of swearing.
- 22:37SPEAKER_06: Let's move on to an RPG mashup.
- 22:39SPEAKER_06: Officially credited to Undertale, this one mashes up Death by Glamour with a couple of the boss themes from Super Mario RPG.
- 22:46SPEAKER_06: For Minus World, Biggeron, and Numa Joe, this is Death by Hammer, Metaton vs.
- 22:51SPEAKER_06: Smithy.
- 27:43SPEAKER_06: These themes really mesh well together.
- 27:45SPEAKER_06: You know, Toby Fox and Yokoshi Momora are both still active composers.
- 27:50SPEAKER_06: This has me wondering what kind of amazing track they could do together.
- 27:54SPEAKER_06: Speaking of working together, let's do some crediting.
- 27:57SPEAKER_06: Minus World played guitar and bass as well as programming the drums, the arrangement, and general production.
- 28:03SPEAKER_06: Bigoran played my beloved rock organ as well as other synthslash keys.
- 28:07SPEAKER_06: Numa Joe did mostly saxophone, both alto and baritone, but also provided some extra production.
- 28:14SPEAKER_06: Who likes Latin?
- 28:15SPEAKER_06: The language I mean.
- 28:17SPEAKER_06: I hope it's you, because you're about to get a dose of it.
- 28:19SPEAKER_06: The man PF, Dog Food for Bananas, and Zach Chapman have brought us It All Ins Here from Super Smash Bros.
- 28:25SPEAKER_06: Brawl.
- 36:21SPEAKER_06: This is just like the definitive version of the track for me now.
- 36:24SPEAKER_06: It takes everything I love about the original, dials it up to eleven, makes it all rog rock.
- 36:30SPEAKER_06: This feels like it was written for me.
- 36:33SPEAKER_06: Out of curiosity, I checked out the Lang Latin tag on OC Remix, and with the caveat that tags might not be complete, this is only the fourth remix to feature Latin.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: And not a single one of those is one-winged angel?
- 36:46SPEAKER_06: That can't be right.
- 36:48SPEAKER_06: Well, anyway, let's do some crediting.
- 36:50SPEAKER_06: The Man PF did arrangement, sequencing, mixing, electric guitar, and vocals.
- 36:55SPEAKER_06: I also want to shout out the Man PF's new album, Prime Cuts, which features this song and is available on Bandcamp.
- 37:02SPEAKER_06: Zach Chapman played bass and also provided vocals.
- 37:06SPEAKER_06: Dog Food for Bananas is actually a band.
- 37:09SPEAKER_06: They are Angry Polar Bear, who played piano, synth, organ, and also did vocals.
- 37:14SPEAKER_06: Also, Ronan Op F, who played violin.
- 37:19SPEAKER_06: I think the Op is opus?
- 37:22SPEAKER_06: Might be OP.
- 37:24SPEAKER_06: I'm not sure.
- 37:25SPEAKER_06: Anyway, last but not least, Jake Holland, who played classical and acoustic guitar.
- 37:30SPEAKER_06: Up next, we have Where the Fire Burns Brightest from Final Fantasy IX by Prophetic Music.
- 41:41SPEAKER_06: It really evokes something like a herdy-girdie and gives it a medieval European sound.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: Even when, like in this track, no herds were actually girded.
- 41:50SPEAKER_06: I was caught so off guard that the hard pivot to a more electronica sound halfway through.
- 41:55SPEAKER_06: The original melody and acoustic instruments set up my expectations and prophetic just knocked them over.
- 47:48SPEAKER_06: We've all done this.
- 47:50SPEAKER_06: This is a lovely piece, and you can really hear the Uamatsu in it.
- 47:54SPEAKER_06: Some phrases here remind me of Final Fantasy X, some phrases there remind me of Final Fantasy I.
- 47:59SPEAKER_06: I hear little snippets of Zanarkind and the Temple of Chaos.
- 48:03SPEAKER_06: And all arranged by and performed soulfully by Blue Lighter.
- 48:08SPEAKER_06: Go check out the official YouTube upload of this one.
- 48:11SPEAKER_06: You can watch his hands doing it.
- 48:13SPEAKER_06: Well, that's it for new tracks in June.
- 48:15SPEAKER_06: Time for a segment.
- 48:17SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah! This is happening.
- 52:22SPEAKER_06: I was wrapping up middle school, and my mom had gone back to school to get a master's degree, and the two of us had a wager.
- 52:29SPEAKER_06: Her GPA versus my GPA.
- 52:32SPEAKER_06: If my GPA was at least as good as hers, then for Christmas, I would receive the gift of a lifetime, yet to be released outside of Japan, Sega Dreamcast.
- 52:42SPEAKER_06: The gaming world, which in that time was still more in magazines than online, was just awed by the screenshots coming out of Japan, which showed a system standing head and shoulders above the next most graphically capable console, the Nintendo 64.
- 52:58SPEAKER_06: With the ability to push enough polygons that you could no longer just count them, and proprietary discs holding an entire gigabyte of data, the Dreamcast was as far ahead of the Saturn as the Saturn was ahead of the Genesis.
- 53:12SPEAKER_06: And if that wasn't enough game, each and every memory card also acted as its own little Game Boy for mini games on the go.
- 53:20SPEAKER_06: Well, both of us ended up with all A's, so Christmas morning came, and with it the Dreamcast and its most exciting launch game, Sonic Adventure.
- 53:29SPEAKER_06: Mind completely blown.
- 53:33SPEAKER_06: Sonic had skipped the Saturn entirely for mainline entries, only having a weird racing game, a compilation, and the fun but flawed and not actually 3D Sonic 3D Blast.
- 53:46SPEAKER_06: Actually an enhanced port of a Genesis game, which I had already played.
- 53:50SPEAKER_06: Seeing Sonic and Friends in full speed, full 3D was beyond amazing.
- 53:56SPEAKER_06: And I still think the game is perfectly playable.
- 53:59SPEAKER_06: It's actually held up pretty well.
- 54:01SPEAKER_06: The graphics hold up, especially the original Dreamcast version, and the game is no less janky than any subsequent Sonic Team game, up to and including the most recent 3D entry, Sonic Frontiers.
- 54:14SPEAKER_06: But we're here to talk about the soundtrack, and what a soundtrack it was.
- 54:19SPEAKER_06: Jun Sanoe and his band Crush Horty delivered continue to be a series staple.
- 54:24SPEAKER_06: Today we're going to explore Sonic Adventure's soundtrack through the lens of Overclocked Remix, playing and discussing all nine of the OCR tracks on the site.
- 54:34SPEAKER_06: This is Single Game Deep Dive Volume 1 Sonic Adventure.
- 54:38SPEAKER_06: We started with Red Barrage Aquarium by Brett Garst, Peter Fernandez, Rick Fieravacci, Richard Hollibeek, and Shane Gallas.
- 54:48SPEAKER_06: This is a pretty straightforward arrangement that mashes up the two tracks from the hot shelter level in pretty much the same style that they were in the game, which is to say, awesome.
- 54:57SPEAKER_06: Playing this one first for the simple reason that I've played it on the pod before, so I don't feel bad talking over it.
- 55:04SPEAKER_06: The rest of the tracks I'll do in chronological order, which brings us to Theme of Chow, Party Started, by Libro, from all the way back in 2001.
- 59:37SPEAKER_06: For the unfamiliar, Sonic Adventure has this extremely robust virtual pet raising mini-game that could honestly be a whole game unto itself, where you raise these cute little creatures called Chow.
- 59:50SPEAKER_06: The Chow Gardens, there's three of them in the game, have the single catchiest, danciest track of the entire OST, and Libro just like doubles down on it.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_06: I think this remix also really brings out the elements of the Sonic Adventure OST that sound like knights, which this sound team had been working on not too long before.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_06: Up next, from 2002, it's McVap's Ty Gall Drum and Raga.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_06: No, I don't know why he spelled Tigal like that.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_06: A Ty Call to make it sound more like a Tygo drama.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_06: This one sounds very McVaff to me.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_06: Probably because if you search OC remixes with Raga in the title, McVaff did all three of them.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_06: Also interesting that in a game full of great action and stage music, this cutscene only NPC character theme has been remixed twice.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_06: Up next, Dark Sword has provided the music for the Twinkle Park Classic.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_06: I wonder how many people completely skipped 3D Blast and only know the Sonic Adventure version of this source tame.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_06: In-game, this is played in the theme park level in the bumper car race section.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_06: At the time, I thought it was super cool that there was a Sonic game that played around with other genres besides just straight up platforming.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_06: Having a whole racing level in your 3D platform was pretty novel, at least to me.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_06: Last thing I want to say about this track, that segue into Sonic's theme has always felt super good to me.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_06: Time to get nuts.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_06: Sir Nuts?
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_06: Who did this track called Lightspeed?
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_06: There was almost a full year gap between this and the previous track, yet here we are with another remix of the same source material.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_06: Personal note, I think this was the first trance song I ever heard.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_06: Probably not the first on the site, I know low effort trance remixes used to be a problem for the judges.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_06: But back in the day, all I had was dialogue.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_06: Yes, well into 2004 when this track released, and I tended to only download mixes from games I had played before.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_06: Next, we're bouncing back to T'Call's theme with Peacemaker from Halsey.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_06: Nearly seven years since the previous track, Lightspeed.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_06: Our next track, Chaos Nightmares by Prototype Raptor, would arrive less than a year later.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_06: To hear Sonic music go from FM Synth to whatever Sonic R was to full-on hard rock was pretty incredible.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_06: Interestingly, for this remix, I feel like Prototype Raptor foreshadowed some of the stylistic shift we get in more recent games like Sonic Frontiers.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_06: While Frontiers still loves its uh let's go with Metalcore, a lot of the level music leaned more into Synth and Electronica.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_06: Chronologically, Red Barrage Aquarium would be posted next, four years later in 2016.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_06: But since we played that one already, we're going to jump ahead to our last track of the segment.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_06: I just keep ending things with solo piano pieces today.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_06: Not my fault, I'm just going in chronological order.
- 1:32:34SPEAKER_06: But dang! E 102 Gamma's theme works so well like this.
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_06: One of the strengths of Sonic Adventure as a game to me was how you got to replay the same levels over again with completely different characters and playstyles.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_06: Much like the original Sonic trilogy on the Genesis.
- 1:32:51SPEAKER_06: Sonic Tales and Amy were all pretty similar, but then Knuckles Big and E102 Gamma really mixed things up.
- 1:33:00SPEAKER_06: I didn't enjoy it quite as much in Sonic Adventure 2 when every character had completely different levels.
- 1:33:16SPEAKER_06: Well, that's it for June 2025.
- 1:33:19SPEAKER_06: If you want to talk about this podcast or anything else related to video game music, you can come join us on the Overclocked Remix Discord where I go by Zach with an exclamation point.
- 1:33:30SPEAKER_06: You can also get involved in the community at the OCR Forums.
- 1:33:33SPEAKER_06: Links to both can be found on HTTPS.org.
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_06: If you want to support the podcast, first of all, you should support OC Remix via Patreon, a link to which you can also find on that main page.
- 1:33:49SPEAKER_06: I don't see a cent, but this podcast only keeps going as long as OCR does.
- 1:33:55SPEAKER_06: Another way to support the podcast more directly is by clicking the support link at https colon slash slash overclock remix podcast.buzzsprout.com.
- 1:34:08SPEAKER_06: All of that money goes to hosting and equipment cost for this podcast, and any money I get above and beyond that gets donated right back to OCR itself.
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_06: As always, our outro music has been See You Next Time, Water, from Final Fantasy V by Dark Sword.
- 1:34:26SPEAKER_06: Our interstitial music this time around was Underground Pipe Society from Super Mario Bros.
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_06: 3 by DDR Kirby ISQ.
- 1:34:36SPEAKER_06: Last up, as always, we're going to close things out by rolling a six-sided die on the remix roulette section of the main page and letting fate decide what we play.
- 1:34:49SPEAKER_06: That's two.
- 1:34:50SPEAKER_06: So we are going to be playing Girl from Another World by Nabil Ansari from Ultra Street Fighter 4.
- 1:34:58SPEAKER_06: Alrighty, folks, have a great month, and I'll see you next time.
