- 0:00Hey there , savvy investors and welcome back to Spy Trader , your goto podcast for navigating the markets with clarity and a dash of fun !
- 0:09I'm your host , Market Maverick Mike , and it's 6 am on Sunday , August 24th , 2025 , Pacific time .
- 0:17We've got a jampacked episode today , diving deep into what's moving the markets and what could be on the horizon .
- 0:24The US stock market is gearing up for what promises to be a very dynamic week .
- 0:29The big buzz , of course , is the Federal Reserve's recent dovish signals , which have certainly put a spring in the market's step .
- 0:36We also have crucial inflation data coming up , and a heavyweight earnings report from a major tech player that could really shake things up .
- 0:44Let's quickly recap the week that was .
- 0:47The primary catalyst for market sentiment heading into this week was Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on August 22nd .
- 0:58Powell hinted at a " shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance , " which many took as a clear signal for a possible interest rate cut as early as September .
- 1:09This dovish pivot , driven by rising downside risks to the labor market despite persistent inflation concerns from tariffs , sent the market soaring on Friday .
- 1:21The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1.9% , the S&P 500 rose 1.5% , and the Nasdaq Composite added a solid 1.9% .
- 1:33As a result , 10year US Treasury yields fell to 4.26% , and the US dollar index declined , all generally favorable signs for equities .
- 1:44Now , while the Fed is hinting at cuts , the inflation picture is still a bit of a mixed bag .
- 1:51Consumer prices in July rose less than expected , but core Consumer Price Index , which strips out volatile food and energy , actually accelerated .
- 2:01Producer price inflation was also higher than anticipated .
- 2:05And let's not forget those trade tensions ; the US doubling tariffs on Indian goods and a looming deadline for more tariffs on August 27th could certainly feed into higher inflation down the road .
- 2:18Economic growth for the first half of 2025 averaged 1.25% , a full percentage point lower than the first half of 2024 , indicating a deceleration , even if Q2 2025 GDP initially showed a 3.0% annual rate of increase .
- 2:37Looking ahead , there are some key economic reports we'll be watching like hawks .
- 2:42On Tuesday , August 26th , we get the US CB Consumer Confidence Index .
- 2:48Thursday , August 28th , brings the revised US Q2 GDP data .
- 2:54But the real heavyweight is on Friday , August 29th , when we get the highly anticipated US Core Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index for July .
- 3:05This is the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation , and its reading will be absolutely crucial in either solidifying or challenging those expectations for a September rate cut .
- 3:17On the sector front , for the week ending August 22nd , the Energy sector , up 2.63% , and Real Estate sector , up 2.58% , were the star performers .
- 3:29In contrast , the Technology sector , down 0.75% , and Communication Services , down 0.23% , lagged for most of the week before rebounding sharply on Friday after Powell's comments .
- 3:45An interesting trend has been the outperformance of midcap stocks , up 1.89% , and smallcap stocks , up 2.62% , over largecap stocks , which were actually down 0.14% .
- 3:59Also , value stocks , up 2.25% , outperformed growth stocks , up 0.15% .
- 4:08The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF , RSP , has also outperformed the marketcapitalizationweighted S&P 500 in August , suggesting a broader market rally beyond just the megacap tech giants .
- 4:24The Nasdaq 100 actually hit an alltime high of 23,969 on August 13th but then retreated due to overvaluation concerns and fears of an " AI bubble " before Friday's rebound .
- 4:39Generally , growth stocks remain at a significant premium , while smallcap stocks are looking much more attractively valued .
- 4:46And now for the main event in company news : Nvidia , NVDA , will report its fiscal 2026 secondquarter earnings after market close on Wednesday , August 27th .
- 5:00Given Nvidia's absolutely central role in the AI industry and its substantial influence on the technology sector , its results and forward guidance will be a huge catalyst for market sentiment .
- 5:12Also , Royal Bank of Canada , RY , will report its fiscal 2025 thirdquarter results before the market opens on Wednesday .
- 5:21So , what does all this mean for your portfolio , and how can we navigate the week ahead ?
- 5:28The US stock market is generally expected to have a positive bias , largely thanks to the prospects of an interest rate cut .
- 5:36But remember , this optimism will be tempered by all that upcoming economic data and , of course , Nvidia's earnings , which could definitely introduce some volatility .
- 5:48First up , for broad market exposure , especially with a smallcap and value lean , consider this : the recent market dynamics strongly suggest a broadening rally , with midcap , smallcap , and value stocks outperforming .
- 6:02The expectation of lower interest rates tends to benefit these segments as they can be more sensitive to borrowing costs and domestic economic conditions .
- 6:11While growth stocks remain on the pricier side , smaller and valueoriented companies offer more attractive valuations .
- 6:20My recommendation here is to maintain core portfolio exposure through broad market ETFs .
- 6:26The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF , VTI , is a super strong option as it tracks the entire US stock market , including large , mid , small , and microcap stocks , naturally benefiting from a broader market rally and potential shifts to smaller companies .
- 6:45For largecap exposure , the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust , SPY , iShares CORE S&P 500 ETF , IVV , or Vanguard S&P 500 ETF , VOO , remain solid , but just be aware that their performance will reflect the internal rotation within the index .
- 7:07Next , let's talk about tactical overweight in interestrate sensitive sectors .
- 7:13The increased probability of a Fed rate cut creates a very favorable environment for sectors that benefit from lower borrowing costs .
- 7:21Real Estate , in particular , has shown strong recent performance and is directly impacted by interest rate expectations .
- 7:30Certain parts of the Financial sector , especially banks , could also see improved lending conditions .
- 7:37So , consider a tactical overweight position in the Vanguard Real Estate ETF , VNQ , which invests in Real Estate Investment Trusts , or REITs .
- 7:48For exposure to the financial sector , the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLF , could also be considered , especially if the sentiment for rate cuts strengthens further .
- 8:00Now , we need to navigate technology sector volatility , especially around Nvidia's earnings .
- 8:07The technology sector , particularly highgrowth areas like AI , has faced concerns over stretched valuations and a potential " AI bubble .
- 8:16" Nvidia's earnings on August 27th will be a truly significant event .
- 8:22A strong report could reinvigorate the sector , but any disappointment could lead to a sharp correction due to the skyhigh expectations built into its stock price .
- 8:32For investors with existing positions in Nvidia , NVDA , or technologyheavy ETFs like Invesco QQQ Trust , QQQ , or Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLK , heightened vigilance is definitely advised this week .
- 8:50Consider implementing risk management strategies for individual stocks like Nvidia , such as covered calls , to generate income and provide some downside protection on existing holdings .
- 9:03For example , you could sell a call option on your NVDA shares with a strike price slightly above the current market price and an expiry after the earnings report .
- 9:13For those looking to enter or increase exposure to the tech sector , it would be prudent to wait until after Nvidia's earnings report to fully assess the market's reaction and the company's forward guidance .
- 9:25Finally , don't forget to utilize fixed income for portfolio stability and income .
- 9:32With the Federal Reserve signaling a potential shift towards rate cuts , bond yields have already declined , and bond prices could see further appreciation .
- 9:41Fixed income provides a valuable ballast for a diversified portfolio , especially given potential volatility from economic data or geopolitical events .
- 9:51So , maintain or add to core fixedincome holdings such as the iShares Core U.S.
- 9:56Aggregate Bond ETF , AGG , or the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , BND .
- 10:04These ETFs offer broad exposure to investmentgrade US bonds , providing stability and income , and are likely to benefit from a continued dovish stance from the Fed .
- 10:16In summary , next week presents a potentially constructive environment for US equities , primarily driven by those Fed rate cut expectations .
- 10:26However , the week's key economic data , especially the Core PCE , and Nvidia's earnings report , will be absolutely crucial in determining market direction and could introduce significant volatility , particularly in the technology sector .
- 10:42A diversified approach with a tactical lean towards interestrate sensitive and broader market segments , while cautiously managing highgrowth tech exposure , appears to be the most prudent path forward .
- 10:54That's all for this episode of Spy Trader !
