Speaker 2: And that information will come directly to me and guess
• 0:41
Speaker 2: what you be on to show me? How about that? Good?
• 0:45
Speaker 1: Now, let's get this show starting. Have you ever thought
• 0:48
Speaker 1: about starting a business? If so, why did or didn't
• 0:51
Speaker 1: you do it? Have you ever hired the wrong people
• 0:55
Speaker 1: and didn't do a background check. Have you maybe even
• 0:58
Speaker 1: hire a relative because you're your family recommended them, like
• 1:02
Speaker 1: your mother, your mama? Have you ever hired someone just
• 1:06
Speaker 1: because they fit into your budget but they didn't have
• 1:09
Speaker 1: the knowledge or do the job correctly? Come on, now,
• 1:14
Speaker 1: what about starting a business without a budget, of going
• 1:16
Speaker 1: into business with someone you didn't really know?
• 1:20
Speaker 2: Have I hit a nerve here. Maybe I have.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: And some of you think what I'm saying isn't that
• 1:25
Speaker 1: big of a deal. Think again, think twice on that. Now, well,
• 1:31
Speaker 1: I'm here to tell you that it is. And one
• 1:34
Speaker 1: no one knows that better than me. How did I
• 1:36
Speaker 1: know this because I had to graduate from the dumb,
• 1:39
Speaker 1: dumb school, that's right, school of hard knocks to get
• 1:43
Speaker 1: where I am today. And I almost lost my business
• 1:46
Speaker 1: in the process. Okay, let's go down memory lane. And
• 1:50
Speaker 1: so it ain't good for me, but I'm trying to
• 1:52
Speaker 1: help everybody out. It's the honesty, you know, raise the
• 1:55
Speaker 1: hand in classroom time. In twenty fourteen, I created my
• 1:59
Speaker 1: company called thirty eight to fifteen Media, Inc. A now
• 2:03
Speaker 1: multi award winning marketing and branding production company in Atlanta, Georgia.
• 2:10
Speaker 2: Weren't always like that now.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: I started my company as an idea and began hiring
• 2:14
Speaker 1: people to fill their open positions. Were they the best
• 2:18
Speaker 1: qualified people for the position? No, but I knew them.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: I had long term relationships with them, and I believe
• 2:26
Speaker 1: they could do certain things. That's the number one mistake
• 2:30
Speaker 1: most business owners make. They hire people because they feel
• 2:34
Speaker 1: comfortable with them, not because they're the best person to hire.
• 2:38
Speaker 1: Best of all, I had no control or the worst
• 2:41
Speaker 1: of all, I had no control of my admin, my
• 2:45
Speaker 1: budget and not balance, and my revenue was none existent,
• 2:48
Speaker 1: which means I hired people it didn't even have a
• 2:50
Speaker 1: plan to make money. By the time twenty twenty three
• 2:55
Speaker 1: year rolled around, the doors to my company were about
• 2:57
Speaker 1: to close. I had to make some touch decisions. Yeah,
• 3:00
Speaker 1: here I am today giving you advice on how not
• 3:03
Speaker 1: to make the same mistakes that I did. How did
• 3:06
Speaker 1: I manage to recover from this situation by recognizing where
• 3:10
Speaker 1: I went wrong, correcting the issues that I had faced,
• 3:14
Speaker 1: and most important, and figuring out what I wanted from
• 3:17
Speaker 1: my company. I had to make hard choices. I had
• 3:20
Speaker 1: to make hard decisions. I had to have a plan
• 3:22
Speaker 1: in place. I had to have a budget. I had
• 3:25
Speaker 1: to look at myself in the eyes, said Rashaan McDonald,
• 3:28
Speaker 1: you are screwing up.
• 3:31
Speaker 2: Woof. That's why I'm doing this show so you won't
• 3:35
Speaker 2: have to look in the mirror. Maybe you will.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: Maybe you're looking in that mirror right now. Maybe you are,
• 3:40
Speaker 1: and maybe you should. Because it's honesty times. This show
• 3:42
Speaker 1: about honesty. Now, now I'm here to share that lesson
• 3:45
Speaker 1: that I've learned with you, my listening audience, they help
• 3:49
Speaker 1: me do that. I partnered up with Amazon Business, a
• 3:52
Speaker 1: platform launcher in twenty fifteen by Amazon who has spent
• 3:55
Speaker 1: the past thirty years gathering critical insights that could benefit
• 3:59
Speaker 1: your business and make you a more efficient decision maker.
• 4:03
Speaker 2: Let me tell you here. Listen though.
• 4:05

• 4:07

• 4:11
Speaker 1: and other goods, and bulk on its store. To better

Speaker 1: hours in that day, twenty four hours. I would tell
• 4:52
Speaker 1: people that ain't enough time. For me sometime. Basically, all
• 4:55
Speaker 1: I'm saying is that we can all use some more
• 4:57
Speaker 1: hours in the day. That's where Amazon Business comes in.

Speaker 1: about winning, That's what you show about helping you win,

Speaker 2: Do you have time for your business? I love it.
• 7:08
Speaker 1: People want to start a business, but to do they
• 7:11
Speaker 1: have time? Or they have they set of time? Do
• 7:13
Speaker 1: they understand what it takes to run a business? I
• 7:15
Speaker 1: tell people this all the time. I wake up at
• 7:18
Speaker 1: four thirty am. As soon as I said it word
• 7:21
Speaker 1: four thirty am, they go ooh, hey, hey, hey, just
• 7:24
Speaker 1: Monday through Friday. People always ask what are you doing
• 7:28
Speaker 1: at four thirty a m. Well, first of all, I'm
• 7:30
Speaker 1: waking up. And I tell everybody, everybody every time when
• 7:34
Speaker 1: I wake up at four thirty, when that alarm clock
• 7:36
Speaker 1: goes off, I'm not a happy camper. But you got
• 7:39
Speaker 1: to have rules in place to win. At four thirty
• 7:43
Speaker 1: that get up, I go stretch. Nowadays, I'm trying to
• 7:49
Speaker 1: reduce stress in my life. I used to watch TV
• 7:52
Speaker 1: and stretch at the same time, so now I don't
• 7:55
Speaker 1: do it watch TV anymore.
• 7:57
Speaker 2: I just stretch for.
• 7:58
Speaker 1: It gives me a nice relax time thirty to forty
• 8:01
Speaker 1: five minutes where I'm just stretching and just thinking about
• 8:04
Speaker 1: things and just kind of like meditating. So I do that.
• 8:09
Speaker 1: Then I get I read the newspaper. Then I start
• 8:12
Speaker 1: my day. I go over to the office and I'm ready.
• 8:15
Speaker 1: I'm all prepared and ready to go. And that's what
• 8:18
Speaker 1: I have to tell people. You have to have a
• 8:19
Speaker 1: starting time. Anybody who says, hey, I'm not a morning person,
• 8:24
Speaker 1: or anybody who hits the snooze person or hits the
• 8:26
Speaker 1: snooze butting that person right there is not trying to
• 8:30
Speaker 1: be successful, not at all.
• 8:31
Speaker 2: I once gave a speech at the.
• 8:33
Speaker 1: Lenthonio Chamber of Commerce, which is right outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
• 8:37
Speaker 1: They invited me to speak about how to be a
• 8:39
Speaker 1: successful business owner. Now, when you talk about success, you
• 8:43
Speaker 1: have to admit your mistakes. And here's one of them. Okay,
• 8:47
Speaker 1: I got many, but here's one of them in particular
• 8:49
Speaker 1: that I want to tell you about. In eineighteen ninety two,
• 8:52
Speaker 1: that's when depth Comedy Jam was big on HBO. I
• 8:55
Speaker 1: opened a comedy club in Houston, Texas. It was called
• 8:58
Speaker 1: Hip Hop Comedy Stop. I had just done Death Comedy Jail.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: Me and Dave Chapelle shared the same stage. I went
• 9:05
Speaker 1: into business with somebody I didn't even know. Hear me
• 9:08
Speaker 1: that I wanted into the business with somebody I didn't
• 9:12
Speaker 1: even know. He was a stand up comic. I was
• 9:15
Speaker 1: a stand up comic. We both liked telling jokes. It
• 9:17
Speaker 1: made sense, right, so naturally we thought we'd be good
• 9:21
Speaker 1: business partners. No background checks, nobody in contract. That's like
• 9:25
Speaker 1: saying you love chicken. Your friend makes good chicken, so
• 9:28
  Speaker 1: let's open.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: The chicken business. It does not work like that. You're
• 9:31
Speaker 2: trying to run a business.
• 9:33
Speaker 1: I didn't know my partner's habits, his work ethics, or
• 9:37
Speaker 1: even if he knew how to run a business. But
• 9:39
Speaker 1: the club became incredibly popular. We had lines out the door.
• 9:43
Speaker 1: Tickets went on sale Monday and we were sold out
• 9:46
  Speaker 1: by Thursday.
• 9:47
  Speaker 2: We were lucky.
• 9:48
Speaker 1: The club seated two hundred and fifty people and by
• 9:50
Speaker 1: nine pm the room was packed.
• 9:53
Speaker 2: I could sure back then in ninety two.
• 9:56
Speaker 1: I'm sure I could have used a business la Amazon
• 10:00
Speaker 1: Business back then, especially with their bulk buying feature. Just
• 10:03
Speaker 1: dropping a little hint is before their time. But bare
• 10:07
Speaker 1: I was doing a lot of bulk thing tarlet people, napkins, glasses, drinks, water.
• 10:14
Speaker 1: I was doing a lot of bulk buying back then.
• 10:17
Speaker 1: If you're doing that bulk buying, listen up. That's what
• 10:19
Speaker 1: I'm talking about. This is what Amazon Business can bring
• 10:22
Speaker 1: to the table. If you're seeking a business partner will
• 10:25
Speaker 1: get a great name recognition. Amazon Business is open available
• 10:30
  Speaker 1: twenty four seven.
• 10:31
Speaker 3: Please don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more

Speaker 1: Guys One time talk about making money versus managing money.
• 11:04
Speaker 1: Despite the success, I made a lot of huge mistakes.
• 11:06
Speaker 1: I already told you lines at the door. We were
• 11:09
Speaker 1: raking it in. Guess what I forgot because I didn't
• 11:13
Speaker 1: worry about accounting. I already told my ad men was
• 11:16
  Speaker 1: messed up. I didn't have a budget, didn't have a plan.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: I ain't have none of that. Back then, I was worse.
• 11:21
Speaker 2: Back then. I forgot to pay taxes.
• 11:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, or I was not paying taxes like they asked
• 11:27
Speaker 1: you to pay taxes because you have to pay taxes
• 11:30
Speaker 1: on liquor. You have to pay taxes on the tickets
• 11:33
Speaker 1: that people buy. The money you make isn't always yours.
• 11:37
Speaker 1: It's now if you pay ten dollars your taxes on
• 11:40
Speaker 1: some of that to somebody. I was just sending that
• 11:43
Speaker 1: ten dollars that I was getting because I didn't have
• 11:45
Speaker 1: a budget or understood business options.
• 11:48
Speaker 2: I was doing everything wrong.
• 11:51
Speaker 1: Now, entrepreneurs, listen up, because we know the fastest group
• 11:55
Speaker 1: of entrepreneurs are women.
• 11:58
  Speaker 2: Who were the.
• 11:59
Speaker 1: Fastest group and it's particularly black women who are launching
• 12:04
Speaker 1: businesses smarter than I did. I'm telling you right now,
• 12:07
Speaker 1: I was selling out my comedy club but couldn't pay myself.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: I was basically working for free. Why Because I wasn't
• 12:14
Speaker 1: organized and I didn't budget properly. Never never, never, never
• 12:19
Speaker 1: knew to order supplies. Gimme never knew when order supplies again.
• 12:25
Speaker 1: That's why I'm dropping that Amazon Business tip on you.
• 12:28

• 12:36
  Speaker 1: or a volunteer.
• 12:37
  Speaker 2: If you're a nonprofit.
• 12:39
Speaker 1: A limited staff means you have limited time just as
• 12:42

• 13:41
Speaker 2: Here's the next one, another topic, The biggest mistake.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: No budget, boy, sometimes going down memory lane.
• 13:52
Speaker 2: It can be painful.
• 13:53
Speaker 1: Just let you guys know that you can't open a
• 13:56
Speaker 1: business and then try to set a budget. If you
• 13:59
Speaker 1: do that, you're playing catch up. You'll wonder why all
• 14:03
Speaker 1: these people around you are getting paid and you are struggling.
• 14:06
Speaker 1: The reason most business owners fail is they never had
• 14:09
Speaker 1: a plan to begin with. Another reason people fail they
• 14:13
Speaker 1: don't have time for their business. I see business owners
• 14:17
Speaker 1: who will open at ten am, but arrive at the
• 14:19
Speaker 1: same time as their customer. Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me.
• 14:22
Speaker 1: I got open up, okay. Can you wait here for
• 14:24
Speaker 1: a few minutes until we get set up?
• 14:25
Speaker 2: Can you wait here? Okay?
• 14:27
Speaker 1: That's just an example of somebody who will not be
• 14:30
Speaker 1: opened that loan. You've seen restaurants that run out of
• 14:33
Speaker 1: menu items. I hate that can I get this shrimp.
• 14:38
Speaker 2: Uh, you know, we just ran out of shrimp.
• 14:40
Speaker 1: How do you run out of something that's supposed to
• 14:43
Speaker 1: be on your menu. It's like going to McDonald's they
• 14:45
Speaker 1: don't have fries, because that's why I go to McDonalds.
• 14:48
Speaker 1: I got to have my fries. If I went to
• 14:50
Speaker 1: McDonald's and they didn't have fries, you know how mad
• 14:53
Speaker 1: I be. Because they are running a business, they will
• 14:57
  Speaker 1: have fries.
• 14:58
Speaker 2: That's a failure of planning and consistency.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: You got a plan for success if you plan on
• 15:05
Speaker 1: making money, If you plan on having this on your menu,
• 15:08
Speaker 1: then you should plan on somebody buying it. And you
• 15:10
Speaker 1: should also plan on not running out when people ask
• 15:14
  Speaker 1: for it.
• 15:14
Speaker 2: Because once you go to a new business and they don't.
• 15:18
Speaker 1: Have some, then your credibility is shot that that person
• 15:21
Speaker 1: will come back. Why would I come back and I
• 15:25
Speaker 1: went there the first time you didn't have what I want?
• 15:28
Speaker 1: Why would I trust you? That's why consistency is key.
• 15:34
Speaker 2: Consistency is key. If you draw by a store at
• 15:38
Speaker 2: night and the sign was off, you think they will close. Right.
• 15:42
Speaker 1: If the sign was on some days but off on others,
• 15:46
Speaker 1: you stop trusting them. That goes for your business. Inconsistency
• 15:51
Speaker 1: kills trust, whether shopping for home or work. People value Amazon.
• 15:56
Speaker 1: I know I do for its convenience, selection and value.
• 16:01
Speaker 1: But businesses and organizations, from sole proprietorships to large enterprises, governments, schools,
• 16:09
Speaker 1: and healthcare organizations have different needs than individual buyers. That's
• 16:14
Speaker 1: why they created Amazon Business. Signing up is easy and
• 16:19
Speaker 1: creating an account is free. Fr Ee, I'm not tired.
• 16:27
Speaker 1: I'm just letting you guys know. I hope you listening.
• 16:31
Speaker 1: I know everybody going.
• 16:31
Speaker 2: Which how are you parting it up with Amazon Business?
• 16:34
Speaker 2: What are you are you? Hey?
• 16:36
Speaker 1: I'm just telling you how I am in a relationship
• 16:39
Speaker 1: that's making my business today very, very successful. And I'm
• 16:44
Speaker 1: asking you to look at the big side, look at
• 16:46
Speaker 1: the relationships. You probably already shopping on Amazon as an individual,
• 16:53
Speaker 1: move it over to your business consider it. The count
• 16:58
Speaker 1: is to set up an account. Let me break it
• 17:02
Speaker 1: down to you. We talked about a lot. Hiring the
• 17:05
Speaker 1: wrong people is a mistake. We all can agree on that, now, right,
• 17:08
Speaker 1: come on, now, we can all agree on that.
• 17:10
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 17:11
Speaker 1: Hire family members can't be a mistake if they're not qualifying.
• 17:15
Speaker 2: We're all agrilled on that. And let me throw this
• 17:17
Speaker 2: in here, do not hire a family.
• 17:19
Speaker 1: Member if you're not hiring them the wrong way you
• 17:23
Speaker 1: would hire an employee that you didn't know. Ask for
• 17:27
Speaker 1: their resume, ask them for a lot of job applications,
• 17:30
Speaker 1: ask them becoming be interviewed. Ask the screen in the
• 17:33
Speaker 1: the same way you would screening someone you did not know.
• 17:37
Speaker 1: Do not lawyer your standards of hiring for somebody who
• 17:41
Speaker 1: is a family member. If you're a restaurant, a comedy club,
• 17:47
Speaker 1: a place of entertainment, parking spaces matter.
• 17:51
Speaker 2: I didn't believe that. Open my comedy club.
• 17:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, we had a line down the street. But guess
• 17:57
  Speaker 1: what they didn't have a line to park. There's a
• 18:01
Speaker 1: park along the street. Oh my goodness, parking matters everybody.
• 18:07
Speaker 2: I had to hire security.
• 18:09
Speaker 1: So I had to hire additional security to walk up
• 18:12
Speaker 1: and down the street, make sure everybody's window was bussed
• 18:15
Speaker 1: broken in, no car was broken into.
• 18:17
Speaker 2: It was man like again.
• 18:19
  Speaker 1: I wasn't paying myself because I was paying taxes, I
• 18:23
  Speaker 1: was paying I didn't have a budget. I was paying
• 18:25
Speaker 1: for additional security. Whoa now, now, now that's the overshon
• 18:31
Speaker 1: Come on, come on, let's go to monitors.
• 18:33
Speaker 2: That's the overshon Now with.
• 18:35

Speaker 1: If you want to be a successful business owner, here
• 19:13
Speaker 1: are the key takeaways.
• 19:16
Speaker 2: Ask yourself, do you have time for your business? Can
• 19:19
Speaker 2: we get a checked? Do you have time? Yeip? Can
• 19:21
Speaker 2: we check that off you say yes.
• 19:24
Speaker 1: Don't hire inexperience employees just because they're cheap. Is it
• 19:28
Speaker 1: anybody that you have on your staff that's unqualified but
• 19:31
Speaker 1: you're hiring them because they fit your budget. You might
• 19:35
Speaker 1: want to consider re evaluating that person, or at least
• 19:38
Speaker 1: putting them on probation on a probation period so they
• 19:43
Speaker 1: can get qualified. If they're not qualified, you may have
• 19:46
Speaker 1: to let them go. Don't hire friends or family are
• 19:50
Speaker 1: left they're fully qualified. I have said this since I started,
• 19:55
Speaker 1: and I'm not getting off of that. You know why,
• 19:57
Speaker 1: because I did it. I hire family members. That is
• 20:01
Speaker 1: like the curse of Rashan McDonald. I love my family members,
• 20:05
Speaker 1: but boy, they were not qualified.
• 20:08
Speaker 2: Friends I've known for twenty years.
• 20:10
Speaker 1: They were qualified, but they would not qualify what I
• 20:14
Speaker 1: needed them to do for the company that I opened.
• 20:17
  Speaker 2: Key right there.
• 20:19
Speaker 1: Just because you go to happy hour to people, just
• 20:21
Speaker 1: because you go to lunch with these people, just because
• 20:23
Speaker 1: they come by and barbecue in your backyard with you,
• 20:27
Speaker 1: Just because they come by and barbecue in the backyard
• 20:29
Speaker 1: with you, don't mean that's the person you uhould be
• 20:32
Speaker 1: putting on salary. Plan for parking, that's so key. Where
• 20:39
Speaker 1: you buying a Lisa, count your spaces just because that
• 20:46
Speaker 1: building fits. Ooh, I love this building, it's perfect, But
• 20:49
Speaker 1: where your customers are going to park? Also, look at
• 20:52
Speaker 1: your other competition is the parking I clean in the daytime,
• 20:58
Speaker 1: but at night all those space that you saw open
• 21:01
Speaker 1: or gone. So make sure you evaluate your parking correctly.
• 21:05
Speaker 1: Set a budget before you launch, and don't play catch up.
• 21:08
Speaker 2: Let me tell you something. If you can't set a
• 21:13
  Speaker 2: budget while you.
• 21:13
Speaker 1: Open your business, because how you gonna qualify, how you're
• 21:18
Speaker 1: gonna make money, how much money you need to make
• 21:20
Speaker 1: if you don't have a budget. I've learned these lessons
• 21:23
