- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Hello, welcome to Crafted Connections.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm Kayla Calhoun, and this is a podcast all about storytelling and building genuine community.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Here we'll dive into the art of storytelling, unpack strategies for making meaningful connections, and hear from incredible humans who are using their story to create impact.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: So grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and let's craft some connections.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Hello, welcome back to Crafted Connections.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: It's great to have you.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I collect stories from folks in my network and in my community, and I and I share them.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I also kind of tell my own experience of enhancing my storytelling, enhancing marketing, like leaning into my business, life stories, kind of inspo stories, what have you, but it's all circled and surrounding stories, right?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I'm a big believer that community is built through connection and connection is built through storytelling.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, in order to have a strong community, you gotta lean into your stories.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And that's that's what I do here.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I I get on the mic, I interview people, and I share my own.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So we are doing something just a tiny bit different here on Crafted Connections.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So typically I'll release an episode every Thursday-ish, and it'll be either a solo episode where I'm speaking on a topic related to storytelling, related to business, related to lifeing, or I will interview a guest and we will have a lovely conversation.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: We'll talk about their story, we'll talk about their situations, they'll talk about we'll talk about their experiences to kind of connect you with them, to connect them with you, to you know, connect them and me a little bit more.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's just a lovely time.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: But we are going to do something I'm calling an on-the-go episode.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: So back in April, I attended the Grow Conference.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So I am the fractional chief content officer for Grow We Wo, which is a women's organization that's all about empowering women, changing the status quo of what it's like to be a woman on this planet in this world, building community around that and and learning together, succeeding together, collaborating together is where it's at.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So I've been able to do that with them for, oh my gosh, what is it, September?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So it's been nine months now.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Nine months I've been working with them, doing some really, really fun things for the women in our community.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So I brought my podcast equipment to the Fort Wayne conference this year, 2025, and I set up a booth.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: There were about, gosh, I think I did about 14 interviews that day and to share stories on the go.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: So I hope you enjoy.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Take a listen and see you on the other side, my friends.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: My name is Darnell Scott.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Now you are here taking photos at the Grow Conference.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Would you mind telling the people a little bit about yourself in a few sentences?
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'm Darnell Scott.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: I am a professional photographer.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: I work with at-risk youth.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: I use photography as a way to help them see things that they overlook.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: We've given a camera away to 188 kids so far, and um, yeah, I'm just living a dream.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: That is amazing.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: I did not know that because there's nothing about being just a photographer, right?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: But then to have such a purpose and a mission in addition to that is very cool.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: So a question that I've been asking folks is if they could share a moment or an experience in their life that was pivotal or impactful, and I was wondering if you could do the same.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: So I started photography in my mind.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: I didn't have a course.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: I just kind of imagined being a photographer.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I protected a kid who was getting bullied.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: The kid was an artist, he taught me how to draw.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I started drawing, I loved it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Go to college.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Kid says, You still draw with pencil?
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: How else do you draw?
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: He said, I want to show you something.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Show me Photoshop, put the pencil down.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Now I want a camera.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: I don't have a camera.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: So I went into a magazine and I pulled all this information from a magazine on Nikon D50.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: I go, I have it on my poster board, and I go out in my imagination.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: I take pictures of the pacers over and over.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Over and over.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: I'm almost there.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: This is great, yeah.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And I did it a thousand times probably.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: One day I have the money to buy the camera.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: I get the camera.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I'm in court camera, Indianapolis, downtown, they're closed now, and I buy the camera, and the guys tell me all these things about it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: I say, This is great.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: I'm a I'm a professional photographer.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And walks the head coach from the Indiana Pacers.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: His name is Rick Carlisle.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: And he says, you know, I'm just looking for a travel camera.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: And I've been thinking the whole time, why this guy's here for me.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: He has to be.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Because of my imagination.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: I kept seeing the Pacer game, me there, taking the pictures of all that.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And you already know him.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: I didn't know him.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: No, but like in your mind, yeah, totally.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Like when you've embodied it.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: So he walks in, it's like, there's no security, there's no no press.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And you're here to buy a camera today?
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: No, you're here for me.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: So I asked him the question.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I said, I'm a professional photographer.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: The guy behind the counter starts laughing.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: He said, dude, you just bought this camera.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: You never had a camera before.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And he laughs.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: I'm not laughing.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Rick's not laughing.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: So he's he said, I like the way you think.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: He said, you use your imagination to he said, wow, that's amazing.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: So long story short, he gets me into the Pacers.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: The first thing I ever shot was an Indiana Pacer preseason game against the Utah Jazz.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: So that was pivotal for me because it just gave me the that thing that I needed.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: It just gave me that superpower where I can just be myself and toe the camera and just do my thing.
- 5:49unknown: Oh my gosh.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: That's an amazing story.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: That's an amazing story.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: It's also that really inspires me to do some more mental rehearsal, right?
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Because of course a coach, a coach understands mental rehearsal.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: He knows what you were doing.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: His players do it.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: He probably was a player at one point.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: He knows.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, so final question.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: How do you define the word alignment?
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Alignment is where using my imagination, I'm big on that.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: I go into my imagination.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I kind of see and observe myself doing it, like a mental movie.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I then take the time to actually design it out with a pen and paper and kind of script it out.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: And then I assume I I assume it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Then I just get into the action of it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: And somehow the environment wraps around me.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: You take what's in your mind and you make it real.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Just become an actor like you know, like any other person with a with a script.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just do the same thing.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Next step I do it for me and not for a movie budget.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: I love that so much.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I like that your definition of alignment is so connected to the story you just shared.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you for your time today.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: You know I'll be seeing you around.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And uh that's that, my friend.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: All right, thank you.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Yay.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, and that was Darnell Scott, y'all.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: He was the final mini sode of this series featuring the folks at uh the Fort Wayne conference back in April.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: What a good one to end on, right?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Super strong interview, super cool guy.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: He crushes the photography for Grow at every conference.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: He's just good energy, along with all the other interviews, right?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: These mini sodes have been so much fun.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: So much fun that I decided tomorrow's episode is gonna be kind of a compilation of everybody's definition of alignment all lined up with, you know, a little take on alignment from my current moment in time.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: So tune in tomorrow for that.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And thank you so much.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: I hope you enjoyed a few of these mini sodes.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Let me know if you liked this uh this approach, the on the go style.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: I'm so grateful for y'all being here.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: The support means the world, and it's just fun to feature lots of folks in a short period of time.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: And I've been sending them right directly to the people.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: So I think people have been having a good time and see you on the flip side.
