Latest / Stuff Keeps Happening / Let's Talk Protests
Transcript
- 0:00Heads up, before anything else, there will be
- 0:02exactly no April Fool's jokes in this episode.
- 0:06Anyone who says otherwise is a charlatan. Do not believe them.
- 0:10Hello
- 0:11I guessed the number of beans in the jar
- 0:15but Stuff still Happened
- 0:17So what's up?
- 0:18Protests. A lot of them.
- 0:20We're gonna talk protests for a little bit.
- 0:22First we're gonna talk about the Tesla protest,
- 0:23and then we're gonna talk about upcoming protests,
- 0:25and then we're gonna talk about how to do protests.
- 0:28And then we're gonna talk about a lot more stuff.
- 0:29There's a lot in this one. Let's keep moving.
- 0:32So over the past week and weekend, there were a whole
- 0:34bunch of protests at Tesla showrooms around the
- 0:37country and beyond.
- 0:38People gathered at the showrooms
- 0:40to peacefully protest with signs and yelling and... protestin'
- 0:44Specifically, they're protesting Elon
- 0:46Musk, and specifically, specifically, they're
- 0:49protesting the whole "he's a Nazi" thing.
- 0:51Remember that time that he went on stage in front of
- 0:53the entire world and did a Nazi salute twice,
- 0:57and then some fucking chuds tried to say that's
- 0:59a Roman salute, and then that whole meme started?
- 1:02Well, the man still definitely did Nazi salutes,
- 1:05and then definitely supported the Nazi party in Germany
- 1:09And has definitely been a complete
- 1:11fucking knob for years.
- 1:14So people aren't particularly
- 1:15thrilled that this fucking tool, who is
- 1:17insultingly bad at Path of Exile, is basically in charge of
- 1:21the federal government.
- 1:22Now while a lot of the
- 1:23protests have been peaceful, I do want to acknowledge
- 1:26that there have been a few instances of violent
- 1:29vandalism at these Tesla facilities.
- 1:31Chargers on fire, cars on fire, Tesla and fire usually go hand in hand
- 1:35I don't see what the problem is.
- 1:37But this has made Musk and Trump very big mad, and
- 1:40they're using the Justice Department to specifically
- 1:42go after these people who are doing things to
- 1:45Tesla facilities and treating them as domestic
- 1:47terrorists, and threatening to send them to the
- 1:49same prison that they're sending the deportees to
- 1:52out of the country.
- 1:53Classic punishment for
- 1:55arson in the US is deporting them to a prison in El Salvador
- 1:59Now, should you set things on fire?
- 2:01The law says no.
- 2:03But morally, should you be setting
- 2:04things on fire, especially at Tesla dealerships?
- 2:07The law says no.
- 2:09But moving on
- 2:09There are large
- 2:10scale protests planned for April 5th. They are
- 2:13called the hands-off protests. I will link to
- 2:15some information about them in the description
- 2:17slash newsletter slash whatever.
- 2:19These protests are planned for basically everywhere, like every
- 2:22single state in a bunch of countries across the
- 2:24world to protest Trump and Musk as they continue
- 2:27to sit in the White House and fondle each other
- 2:29while whispering about tariffs and I don't know,
- 2:32staff reductions and stuff
- 2:33Like an authoritarian oroborous
- 2:35But moreover, I want to
- 2:36talk to you about protest safety and things you
- 2:38should be doing if you're planning to go to a protest
- 2:40These are things to maximize your impact
- 2:42by way of keeping yourself safe and not ruining for everyone else
- 2:47So quickly, I'm going to
- 2:48go through five little tippies. Tippie tippies.
- 2:51Tip tip tip tips for you. That was a normal thing
- 2:54that I just did with my mouth.
- 2:561. Leave your tech at home
- 2:58Phone, smartwatch, anything with a
- 3:01screen, anything with a radio, leave it at home.
- 3:03If you absolutely, absolutely need to have a phone
- 3:07of some kind, purchase a burner phone with cash
- 3:10and ditch it as soon as you can.
- 3:12Do not use your credit card that creates a paper trail.
- 3:15Leave all your crap at home.
- 3:17Two, turn your body into an info sheet
- 3:19If you're going to a protest, you don't
- 3:21know what's going to happen to you. And that's just,
- 3:24that's just part of the deal. I'm not saying
- 3:26that to scare you, but it's true. You're most likely
- 3:28going to be perfectly fine. But in the event that
- 3:30the piggies decide to arrest you, take your stuff,
- 3:33strip you or whatever, you need to make sure
- 3:35that you've got the information that you need
- 3:37on your person, quite literally. You can write
- 3:39it down on a piece of paper as well, but if you've
- 3:41got that in your bag and they take your bag,
- 3:43you're screwed. So take a, like a permanent marker and
- 3:47write a few things on yourself. Here's some
- 3:49examples. Jot down an emergency contact, the
- 3:51phone number and just the first name of someone
- 3:54that should be called in the event of an emergency.
- 3:56Write down the name and number of a lawyer who
- 3:59can come and represent you. There are usually
- 4:01lawyers that are doing pro bono work to help
- 4:03protesters and protest organizers usually have
- 4:06a few that they know of So chat with them, try to get a number
- 4:09Also any medical information,
- 4:11like allergies to medications or conditions that
- 4:14a doctor should be aware of in the event that you
- 4:16are unfortunately knocked out and brought to a hospital
- 4:19If they can pull up your sleeve and see
- 4:21like, Oh, this person's allergic to penicillin.
- 4:23That can quite literally save your life.
- 4:253. Don't talk to cops.
- 4:31Don't do it. Don't talk to the cops.
- 4:33Not even if they're being nice and not even if
- 4:35they're just making small talk.
- 4:36They are not your
- 4:37friend. They are allowed to lie to you and they
- 4:40are trying to get you to incriminate yourself.
- 4:42Remember you have the right to remain silent.
- 4:46Anything you say can and will be used against
- 4:48you in a court of law.
- 4:50The only things you
- 4:51should say to a cop are, "I am not answering
- 4:53questions without my lawyer present," or
- 4:55"I would like a phone call"
- 4:56...with which to get lawyer.
- 4:58Seriously, if nothing else, if you do
- 5:00nothing else, don't talk to cops.
- 5:034. Wear something practical and comfortable. Don't listen to
- 5:06people who tell you to get like tactical shit or wear
- 5:09like higher shoes so that you change your height
- 5:12so that the cops won't be able to recognize you.
- 5:15Like, no, just wear what's comfortable
- 5:17because you might be in it for like 48 hours.
- 5:20Again, you don't know what's going to happen to you.
- 5:22You might be in a jail cell overnight. You might go
- 5:24home totally fine. You don't know.
- 5:26Plan accordingly.
- 5:27Wear something that you're comfortable in.
- 5:29Bring a change of an outer layer in a bag if you've
- 5:32got it, but just don't wear big flowy stuff. Don't
- 5:36don't wear stupid shoes. Like wear a practical thing.
- 5:385. look out for each other
- 5:41Bring water. Bring maybe some first aid stuff. Use
- 5:43water to wash out any pepper spray and tear gas.
- 5:46Don't use anything else but water. Please, please.
- 5:50And remember, this is not about you. This is about
- 5:54the protest and the message.
- 5:55Do not make it about yourself. Do not make it about making yourself
- 5:58into a martyr. Don't start shit and don't get up
- 6:01in cops' faces. It doesn't seem straightforward,
- 6:05but now is not the time to fight like that
- 6:07because doing that imperils a lot of people around you,
- 6:10especially in the US where altercations with
- 6:12cops can quickly turn deadly. And dying is not as
- 6:16effective as making a statement and then
- 6:18continuing to go on and help other people.
- 6:20Heroics don't
- 6:22happen because they're sought out. They happen
- 6:24because someone acted in a time of necessity.
- 6:27Don't seek it out.
- 6:28I'm not saying that you got
- 6:29to drop your fantasy about being the big hero,
- 6:32although you should do that,
- 6:33but I'm saying be
- 6:34thoughtful and remember, it's not about you.
- 6:37You are one of a collective. This is about the
- 6:40collective and their impact.
- 6:42So there's that. Go forth, protest, have fun, do all that good
- 6:45stuff. Mostly, meet some amazing people.
- 6:48You're going to find some really awesome people if
- 6:50you go to a protest. So make some friends.
- 6:52Okay, moving on.
- 6:53I'm talking to you. I have a
- 6:54Patreon, patreon.com slash endeavorants. You should
- 6:57check it out if you want to support me. Also
- 6:59head to skh.news for sources and a newsletter,
- 7:03which is free. And there's also some paid support tiers.
- 7:06That's the end. We're moving on
- 7:08I can't with the, with the self promo. I can't do it.
- 7:11Policy!
- 7:12A Tufts University doctoral student
- 7:14and Fulbright scholar was abducted by federal
- 7:17agents in plain clothes as she was walking to dinner.
- 7:20Rümeysa Öztürk got abducted. As I said,
- 7:24plain clothes officers walked up to her wearing
- 7:26a mask saying where the cops come with us.
- 7:29She's a student here on a visa from Turkey in the
- 7:31Fulbright program, which is a program where we
- 7:34exchange students to bring in different perspectives
- 7:36and cultures and intelligence from around the
- 7:39world to help academia be better.
- 7:42This student, who again is a doctoral student, she's in her
- 7:45thirties. She wrote an op-ed for her school paper
- 7:48a year ago, requesting for the school to
- 7:51acknowledge the Palestinian genocide.
- 7:53That is all she did. And
- 7:55apparently that was enough for ICE to take her and
- 7:57the state has revoked her visa.
- 7:58They're now trying
- 7:59to deport her, but a judge has recently halted that.
- 8:02This is insane.
- 8:03I'm so incredibly tired
- 8:06of people trying to make the argument that folks
- 8:08who are here on a green card or a visa straight up
- 8:12deserve to be kicked out if they remotely
- 8:15criticize the state. Like what a bullshit take.
- 8:18You don't get to be a person who's like, "ah, don't
- 8:22tread on me. And also the government is allowed to
- 8:25determine who can say what."
- 8:27The executive branch does not get to just
- 8:29put limitations on freedom of speech just because
- 8:32it makes them sad.
- 8:34This foreign exchange student
- 8:37who's doing research was critical of Israel.
- 8:41Now we're going to deport her!
- 8:43It's gross and dumb.
- 8:44And in the United States, freedom of speech is supposed
- 8:46to be the bedrock of our society. You know, the
- 8:48whole first amendment thing.
- 8:51And you can argue till you're blue in the face about whether or
- 8:53not people with visas or green cards should be just
- 8:57overtly patriotic and never criticize the
- 9:00country. Otherwise they're not grateful for being here.
- 9:03That's still just gross and weirdly exceptionalist
- 9:07And it also is an endorsement of whoever is in
- 9:10power at that time, having the ability to say
- 9:13this is acceptable. This is not. And last I checked,
- 9:17the United States is not governed by philosopher kings
- 9:20America is currently governed by a half-wit
- 9:22moron who bankrupted a casino. And prior to
- 9:25that, a barely alive husk of a human who spent his
- 9:28earlier years pushing back against integration in schools.
- 9:32So maybe don't pick an authority figure
- 9:35to determine what is and is not okay to say,
- 9:38regardless of country of origin.
- 9:40Because if the U.S. State Department needs to deport a 31 year
- 9:44old researcher who wrote an op-ed in a college
- 9:46newspaper because that is a threat to
- 9:49national security, then we have failed as a country.
- 9:53Oh, speaking of national security!
- 9:54As I was uploading last week's episode of stuff keeps
- 9:57happening, it broke that a bunch of top
- 10:00ranking government officials had a signal group chat
- 10:03where they were discussing plans to bomb Yemen.
- 10:06And they added the editor in chief of the Atlantic
- 10:09magazine to said group chat.
- 10:11That is a real thing
- 10:13that happened like a week ago.
- 10:16And we're already over it!
- 10:17It's just crazy. Like we should not be over it.
- 10:20Here's the thing: If they did this for
- 10:22this one group chat, they absolutely have many more.
- 10:26Signal is not approved for this use case.
- 10:28And it's not like they all just coordinated. Hey,
- 10:30let's all install signal to have this one conversation here.
- 10:34This is a problem.
- 10:35This was us getting a
- 10:36look into just how little this administration
- 10:38actually cares about national security, which
- 10:41we knew we knew they never actually cared. And we
- 10:44knew they never actually cared when it came to
- 10:46Hillary with her email server that they screeched
- 10:48about for years.
- 10:49That is not a defense of Hillary.
- 10:51She shouldn't have had that email server. And also
- 10:53they shouldn't be doing this.
- 10:55But for reason, I don't think that anything is going to really
- 10:57come of this because one, who is going to do
- 11:00anything about it? And two, Pete Hegseth apparently
- 11:04has been bringing his wife to meetings with
- 11:06defense ministers from foreign countries.
- 11:08But honest to god, despite that being not okay, she's
- 11:12probably more qualified than Pete Hegseth.
- 11:14Maybe it's just for the best.
- 11:16The administration's take on all of this with the whole signal chat
- 11:19thing is, is no big deal. Mistakes happen. We need to move on.
- 11:25Which like, I'm not going to sit here
- 11:26and point out the hypocrisy. It's not worth it.
- 11:29Let's go around the world.
- 11:31Let's go around the world!
- 11:33Dizzy.
- 11:34We're good.
- 11:35Oh, hey, the Greenland thing. Greenland, Greenland.
- 11:36JD Vance went there
- 11:38because the US is still talking about wanting
- 11:40to take it over.
- 11:41He was there for like
- 11:42literally a handful of hours and nobody there wanted him
- 11:45there. They were pretty upset about it. But
- 11:48during his time there, he addressed some people at a
- 11:50military base, he insulted Denmark and then
- 11:52implied that Greenland should separate from Denmark and
- 11:55then join the United States.
- 11:57Now you should know that most political
- 11:58parties in that very Greenland have decided to
- 12:01form a coalition to say fuck you to the US.
- 12:03They're not about it. They're really, really, really
- 12:05not about it. At all.
- 12:07Turkey, there's unrest.
- 12:08That's putting it mildly.
- 12:10There's a lot of protests in Turkey.
- 12:12So Turkey's
- 12:13leader, Erdogan, has been in power for like over
- 12:1520 years and is essentially a dictator. He's
- 12:17most recently been doing everything he can to stop a
- 12:20potential opposition party from unseating him.
- 12:23This time it was by arresting the mayor of Istanbul,
- 12:27who is the leader of said opposition party
- 12:29and most likely person to be able to actually
- 12:31unseat Erdogan.
- 12:32So amidst ongoing protests,
- 12:34this arrest happens and that cranks it up to 11.
- 12:37It goes from like, hey, we're not happy with the
- 12:39state of things and our government isn't really
- 12:41doing anything to fix stuff to our government is
- 12:44actively trying to make it so that we have no voice.
- 12:46And of course, these protests are then
- 12:48met with the government clamping down saying that
- 12:50you can't do gatherings. You can't hold
- 12:52demonstrations. And they're saying, fuck you, we're
- 12:54going to hold demonstrations. And the
- 12:55government's like, well, we're going to arrest all of you.
- 12:57And it's, it's, it's escalating pretty quick.
- 13:00In Canada, there's going to be an election in a month.
- 13:04God, imagine election season lasting a month.
- 13:06So Justin, "I only did blackface that one time" Trudeau
- 13:10stepped down and was replaced by Mark Carney
- 13:12Both of them are in the Liberal Party
- 13:14and Carney recently called a snap election, which
- 13:16is essentially going to just be the Liberal Party
- 13:18versus the Conservative Party to boil it down to the basics.
- 13:22Now, pre-Trump, the Conservative Party
- 13:24in Canada was surging in the polls and it was
- 13:27really looking likely that the Liberals were just
- 13:30going to crash out.
- 13:31And then Trump came into
- 13:32power and started talking about Canada being
- 13:33the 51st state and saying Governor Trudeau
- 13:36and then slapping all those tariffs on Canada.
- 13:38And Canadians are fucking pissed.
- 13:40And so they're kind of looking at the Conservatives and being
- 13:42like, Hey, actually, we don't want that. Like
- 13:45they're looking at what's going on in America.
- 13:46And they're like, this is insane. We don't
- 13:49want any of that.
- 13:50And so the graphs of the polling
- 13:51between these parties is hysterical. It is just
- 13:54a complete inversion.
- 13:56So the vote is on April 28.
- 13:58We'll see just how much Canadians are pissed off.
- 14:01In Myanmar, there was a massive 7.7
- 14:04magnitude earthquake.
- 14:06It's been more than a
- 14:06century since they've seen an earthquake of this scale.
- 14:09And unfortunately, the devastation is widespread
- 14:11and massive. At time of recording, the death toll
- 14:14has surpassed 1700 people with thousands more missing and injured.
- 14:18Myanmar is not in a great
- 14:20way right now. There's been ongoing civil war and
- 14:23some parties of the civil war have offered to do a
- 14:26ceasefire to help with the aid efforts, but
- 14:28it's tenuous at best.
- 14:30Meanwhile, Israel is bombing
- 14:31Lebanon again. They've broken their ceasefire.
- 14:34They signed in November and dropped a bomb on a
- 14:37residential building in a suburb of Beirut.
- 14:39The Israeli government issued an evacuation warning
- 14:42beforehand by posting a picture of the building
- 14:44that they were going to bomb
- 14:45So the people who live in this building were
- 14:47scrambling to flee and inform the other folks who
- 14:49lived there who didn't see the X over their house
- 14:53and then boom, plume of smoke. Israel used their
- 14:56favorite excuse of there's terrorists here. So
- 14:59we're going to bomb it, which is not an excuse.
- 15:01"There are terrorists there. So we're going to
- 15:04bomb it" is not an argument.
- 15:06One, "terrorist" is
- 15:07subjective. Two, that's not how anything works.
- 15:11You don't have the authority to bomb other countries.
- 15:14It is just war. All you're doing is war,
- 15:18especially when you're saying, well, we believe there to be
- 15:21some terrorists somewhere in this building
- 15:23that otherwise is populated entirely by civilians.
- 15:27That's not using civilians as a shield. That's
- 15:31just logistics.
- 15:32There are plenty of buildings
- 15:33in every country that have governmental operations
- 15:37as well as other shit going on.
- 15:39And in this case,
- 15:41like it or not, Hezbollah is government operation.
- 15:44So that's that's fun. Yep.
- 15:46Lightning Round
- 15:47Elon Musk has sold Twitter to himself.
- 15:51he is lumping Twitter into his AI company.
- 15:54So that means Twitter is now owned by X AI and is like entirely
- 15:59just an AI bullshit thing now.
- 16:01So hey, this is your reminder:
- 16:03Get the fuck off of Twitter.
- 16:05DNA testing app 23 and me might
- 16:08possibly be transferring users DNA data to a
- 16:11new owner as they're facing bankruptcy.
- 16:13Stop giving your biological data to tech companies.
- 16:16Over 1.5 million photos of users from
- 16:19dating apps, particularly queer and kink based
- 16:22dating apps have been leaked online.
- 16:25Sorry, not leaked. They were just not protected by
- 16:29the developers of the apps.
- 16:30They were just publicly available.
- 16:32The apps include SM people,
- 16:34Chica, Trans Love, pink and British anything that's
- 16:37developed by mad mobile apps. So look into that.
- 16:41And finally, for today, rumor has it that you'll
- 16:43be able to preorder a Nintendo switch to as soon as April.
- 16:47I'm gonna switch to uh,
- 16:54I didn't have a second part of this joke.
- 16:56I'm gonna switch to my outro.
- 16:58Thank you so much
- 16:58for listening to today's episode of stuff
- 17:00keeps happening head to skh.news for sources, bonus
- 17:03content and my secret as to how I guessed about
- 17:07the beans. My name is Endeavorance. I'll be back
- 17:10on Monday. Take care and be well.
