Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint Wenceslaus, duke and martyr, September 28 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast, Don Gaspar Lefevre writes the following, Wenceslaus, duke of Bohemia, always practiced on the throne of the finest Christian virtues. Full of charity, he helped with his alms, orphans, widows, and poor people, delivered captives, and visited prisoners. He, all his life, kept the treasure of his virginity intact.

He had a very great veneration for priests and with his own hands he sowed the wheat and pressed the grapes which were used for the holy sacrifice of the mass. However, instigated by his mother, the impius bolaslos, realizing what Jesus had foretold, that a man will have for his enemies, those of his own family, determined to rid himself of the Duke his brother. After receiving him at his table he went off with his accomplices and killed him in a church where he was praying and awaiting the conspirators. Saint Wenceslaus died in the year of our Lord 938. Hungary, Poland, and Bohemia chose him for their patron.
• 1:59
In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Well may the just man rejoice, o Lord, in thy protection. Well may he triumph in thy saving power.
• 2:20
Never a wish in his heart hast thou disappointed. With abundant blessing, thou hast met him on his way, hast set a jeweled crown upon his head. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Well, may the just man rejoice, O Lord, in thy protection.

Well may he triumph in thy saving power. Never a wish in his heart hast thou disappointed. The Collect, let us pray. O God, who by the palm of martyrdom didst remove blessed Wenceslaus from an earthly princedom to the glory of heaven, keep us by his prayers from all adversity and grant that we may rejoice in everlasting fellowship with him through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen.

A lesson from the book of wisdom. The Lord guided his faithful servant straight to his goal and on the way showed him the heavenly kingdom, gave him knowledge of holy things. He enriched him by his toil, gave all his labors a happy issue. Navery went about to get the better of him, but the Lord stood by him and prospered him, kept him safe from his enemies, protected him from their scheming. He would have him wrestle manfully and prove that there is no strength like the strength of wisdom.
• 4:37
When the innocent man was sold for a slave wisdom did not desert him, did not leave him in the hands of his persecutors, but went down with him into his dungeon. Fast was he bound but she had not finished with him till she gave him dominion over a whole kingdom and power to do what he would with his persecutors. So she showed them to be liars, those who introduced him, and the Lord our God granted him everlasting fame. The gradual. A blessed man is he who fears the Lord bearing all love to his commandments.
• 5:29
Children of his shall win renown in their country. Ever the sons of the just shall find a blessing. Alleluia. Alleluia. O Lord, thou hast set a jeweled crown upon his head.
• 5:47
Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Do not imagine that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have come to bring a sword, not peace. I have come to set a man at variance with his father and the daughter with her mother and the daughter-in-law with her mother-in-law.
• 6:21
A man's enemies will be the people of his own house. He is not worthy of me that loves father or mother more. He is not worthy of me that loves son or daughter more. He is not worthy of me that does not take up his cross and follow me. He who gives you welcome gives me welcome too and he who gives me welcome gives welcome to him that sent me.
• 6:55
He who gives a prophet the welcome due to a prophet shall receive the reward given to prophets, And he who gives a just man the welcome due to a just man shall receive the reward given to just men. And if a man gives so much as a draft of cold water to one of the least of these here because he is a disciple of mine, I promise you he shall not miss his reward. The offertory. Thou hast crowned him with glory and honor. Thou hast bidden him, O Lord, to rule over the works of thy hands.
• 7:46

Cleanse us by the heavenly mysteries and mercifully hear us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. The common preface, just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, The powers stand in awe.
• 8:43
