- 0:25All right, everybody, you're listening to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show,
- 0:29the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world. That's right over
- 0:32ten years strong. We got a great, great show coming your way.
- 0:37I'm gonna be getting into some sports media talk Philadelphia Phillies seventy sixers, specifically
- 0:43with regard to James Harden, and we got a lot more sexers talk on
- 0:47the way with a great guest this week. I'm Jeff Warren and I'm here
- 0:51at my good buddy Eric Leonard had Eric, howm at? How are you
- 0:54doing? Man? I just like bumbled my words right there. Oh yeah,
- 0:57Yo, you're right out of the gate. Worry buddy, Well,
- 1:00it's excusable even on vacation. Yes, you're jumping right back into the show.
- 1:04I'm in a I'm in a twilight zone nightmare. I thought I was
- 1:07done coaching. I had baseball practice tonight and uh yeah, but I'm only
- 1:14an assistant now, so you're still a glutton for punishment. I'm just a
- 1:17pleab that throws batting practice and but yeah, I can never see no anybody,
- 1:22So yeah, I'll do my best. Bud. You sent me the
- 1:25agenda about five minutes ago, and we yea I get I get a text
- 1:33from Eric as I am in the worst torrential downpour heading back from Ocean City,
- 1:38Maryland. My family's still down there. I had to come back early
- 1:42because of work and business type stuff that I just needed to attend to.
- 1:45Over these next couple of days, worst torrential thunderstorms that I have ever driven
- 1:49through it. We're talking like over two hours, and I get a text
- 1:53message from this guy. He's like, hey, if you got the agenda
- 1:56here or what? And I'm like trying not to. I'm trying not to
- 2:00do. You're my car off the road in this torrential downpour, and I'm
- 2:04like, yes, I'll get it to you when I get home. I'm
- 2:05gonna be hopefully home in about twenty minutes or so. Okay, crap.
- 2:08This is where empathy and like friendship comes into play. Yes, they're getting
- 2:12ready for practice, going oh god, I don't feel like doing this,
- 2:15and I'm like, where's the agenda? I just want to look at this.
- 2:16Didn't get over it. But you know, obviously I'm you were probably
- 2:21going through something. I'm going through something. Yes, you know, we
- 2:23were just like I'm very kindly, where's the agenda? Yes, the show's
- 2:28tonight. I know, so I actually meant to get the agenda to you
- 2:32before I left, and I completely forgot. I was going to do it
- 2:35on my iPad from down at the condo that we were staying, and I
- 2:38completely forgot. What a terrible host, What a terrible host. Next time,
- 2:42I want the iPad In one hand, the stream will on the other
- 2:45hand, we do got a good show though, for you folks that we
- 2:51got. We've got a great guest. Absolutely love having him on. Sean
- 2:53Bernard from the Philly Sports Network. He's gonna come on a little later talk
- 2:58about this Philadelphia seventy six team as we're in the midst of the off season,
- 3:01and how this team is really gonna look when the regular season starts later
- 3:06this year. Dal Moore is certainly going to be making some moves. Eric
- 3:07and I are going to be talking about James Harden as well. What type
- 3:12of leverage does he actually have in terms of his contract negotiations during this offseason.
- 3:16We're going to talk about the Phillies. They're just this middling team in
- 3:20the NL East. I think at least there's that hope that they're getting ready
- 3:23to kind of just explode here within the division. I don't know. They're
- 3:28currently playing the Cubs right now, the first game of this series as Eric
- 3:31and I are recording this, But Eric, we wanted to start off talking
- 3:35about a particular article that I had seen on awful announcing dot com. And
- 3:40this article was titled how gen z is killing sports media as we know it.
- 3:46Jen Zers just don't like sports that much and that's a big problem.
- 3:52Some interesting stats from a study that recently came out, which was mentioned in
- 3:55this article, is that to this new study, only fifty eight percent of
- 4:01gen Zers say they enjoy live sports. Only twenty three percent of gen Zers
- 4:08say they are passionate sports fans, compared to forty two percent of millennials,
- 4:12thirty three percent of Gen xers, and thirty one percent of baby boomers.
- 4:16And even more concerning within this article, twenty seven percent of gen Zers said
- 4:20they dislike sports altogether, compared with just seven percent of millennials, five percent
- 4:26of gen Zers, and six percent of baby boomers. So, in other
- 4:30words, kids these days, they're not reading the sports section, they're not
- 4:36logging onto various news articles about sports. You know, they're discussing sports basically,
- 4:45Eric here and I think this article. I think it's interesting because you
- 4:49know, podcasts were mentioned in this article as well, that the folks they
- 4:56enjoy sports, but they see it in a different way. And the difference
- 5:00is the content that is consumed differently. And you know, instead of watching
- 5:06you know, the sports section of the newscast, you know, on your
- 5:13local news channel. You know, people are listening to sports podcast just like
- 5:16us, you know, And it's interesting before we hit the record button,
- 5:19you and I are talking like, you know, at twenty years from now,
- 5:21thirty years from now, people are people are going to be listening to
- 5:25podcasts? Probably they probably aren't going to be. And what this article led
- 5:30me to believe is there's just a continual evolution and progress in the way that
- 5:34we consume the type of entertainment that we want to consume. Things evolve,
- 5:41things progress in life, whether it's with sports, whether it's with movies.
- 5:45How we view the content in our homes these days through streaming. Look,
- 5:49just about everybody I know has cut cable, except for my in laws,
- 5:54who are of course in their mid seventies. They still refuse to do it
- 5:57for some reason. Even though we'd save them a lot of money. But
- 6:00things change and things evolve, and I think that is one of the points
- 6:03of this. And we talk about sports media on this podcast every now and
- 6:06again, like to bring it up just to keep things fresh. I don't
- 6:10know what was your perspective in terms of this article. How you know gen
- 6:13z is just killing sports media here as we know it, buddy, I
- 6:17mean, no one listens to this podcast that was you know, you ain't
- 6:21just whistling Dixie. Now you said no, like, no one's you know,
- 6:28podcast listenership is going to like decrease over time, of course it is.
- 6:30I mean, yes, every time I read one of these articles,
- 6:32I'm just always like, first of all, you sent it to me,
- 6:36and I'm like, oh god, two guys in the mid forties on a
- 6:39podcast talking about gen Zers hating sports. But I would give you a more
- 6:45progressive take on it. It's we're the ones that have to get with it.
- 6:49I mean, I coach youth sports. Kids like sports. It does
- 6:56not go away. It's fun. Sports are fun. And the way they
- 7:00intake it, the way they watch it, the way they learn how to
- 7:04play, the way they experience it is completely different. And we gray hairs
- 7:10have to start changing our perspective. Right. There's just no wave of we're
- 7:15not going back the good old days of everyone's sitting around by the TV watching
- 7:18a game in real time and we're all having the same experience whether we're ten
- 7:26years old or eighty years old. That's done like that. That just we
- 7:28have to get past that. And I think back to in the like late
- 7:32eighties, when I the way I would like intake baseball, and my dad
- 7:36would just be like, well, this is different, because I would.
- 7:40I would experience baseball through baseball cards, baseball stickers like I would. I
- 7:46would try to get every single team cup at the Slushy like the Slushy Cup
- 7:50like I took baseball in in a much different way and Eric real quick.
- 7:56I would listen to Harry Callis's voice on my boom bo in my bedroom as
- 8:01I was like going to bed. Okay, but you and I bought it
- 8:05over that I did this thing. I would actually record games and listen to
- 8:07the same game for an entire week and then record another game. It's to
- 8:13tell my son that is beyond preposterous, right, but he loves baseball and
- 8:18basketball and soccer. Just as much as any sport I used to love when
- 8:22I was his age. He takes it in though he plays video games.
- 8:24He talks to his friends about it, He watches YouTube like he experiences sports
- 8:30through YouTube, not necessarily through like live events, live games that'll never go
- 8:35away. I'll say that right now. I actually like live sports in person
- 8:39in a stadium or an arena that will never go away. But just the
- 8:43way they take it in in the social media era. I just I read
- 8:48that article and I just like the picture number one is just hilarious. It's
- 8:52a bunch of gen Z kids with the mullets in the weird shades and they're
- 8:56going yeah, and you're just like, okay, clickbait, right, But
- 9:01again it's just this weird. Like I said before the show, it's like
- 9:05even even a podcast ten years from now is going to be like what what's
- 9:09a podcast? Like what? Yeah, just like can't I just like,
- 9:13what do you mean you can't just like think your thoughts and they go out
- 9:16into the world and people everyone else can hear them, right, you know,
- 9:18like when we get to that point the chips in our heads. But
- 9:22like I don't know, like just the way we experience sports now, and
- 9:26then you also have to think like social media and technology, well technology absolutely,
- 9:33if you don't mind, I want to piggyback off that really quick.
- 9:35I'm not sure if you, as some folks may know out there, I
- 9:39am a huge Apple nerd, like in terms of having imax and iPhones,
- 9:45iPads, like, I'm a huge Apple guy. And every single time that
- 9:50there's some sort of an announcement or their keynote, I am watching it.
- 9:52Actually the day of as it is going live. This past uh just a
- 9:56couple weeks ago that Apple had their WWDC Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, I watched
- 10:03it, and there was the moment when the Apple the Apple VR headset,
- 10:09I forget what's called Apple Vision Pro, when they debuted that they're debuting what
- 10:15it is, what it's going to be. But then they had Bob Eiger,
- 10:18who as you all may know, is the CEO of Disney, came
- 10:22out on the stage as well to talk about how Disney and Apple are going
- 10:26to be working together to enhance entertainment experiences. Eric and I'm not sure if
- 10:30you actually saw this, but they actually talked about the sports experience through the
- 10:35actual VR headset and in the imagery of what was in front of you was
- 10:41incredible. How you are actually at the game, you are courtside watching the
- 10:46Sixers or watching whatever team you want to watch, and things that are things
- 10:52that are coming up along the sides of it, like banners of certain players
- 10:56their stats. Just it was an incredible individual experience, making you feel as
- 11:01though you were right there at the game. So from a technology standpoint,
- 11:05that's of course where it is going. And I think because of that individual
- 11:13like perception of what the game means to that person at that time and how
- 11:16you can curate what type of content within the game matters to you, is
- 11:22going to enhance the sports watching experience even that much more. And I thought
- 11:26it was an incredible presentation into what the future could actually be for the sports
- 11:33world. Just for a brief maybe ten seconds within the Apple keynote, I
- 11:37was like, Oh my god, sports is going to be phenomenal to watch
- 11:41with this VR headset once it's affordable for everybody. Yeah, but okay,
- 11:46so I'll dress that and then I'll go back to the technology side. So
- 11:52I saw that and I read all about it. You know, I'm in
- 11:54text, So people ask me like what do you think about it? And
- 11:56I was like, it's incredible, he is, and it's the technology that
- 12:01I'll never actually be able to wrap my head around. But I'll get sentimental
- 12:05for a second. Nothing's going to beat me taking my son to a Sixers
- 12:09game and looking over and watching him experience it, like no no VR headsets
- 12:16ever going to unless it brainwashes me with brainworms or some shit. To actually
- 12:22watch him, like I took him to a game two years ago and he's
- 12:24always told me the best night of his life. Yea, and that can't
- 12:28be replaced. Right, So I love you, Bob, I actually don't
- 12:31love you at all, but I like your sentiment. But it's just it's
- 12:35just not it's just not reality when it comes to real moments of watching sports
- 12:41with someone you love. Baseball game, you can feel the sun on your
- 12:45face like that, Like that's just I don't I don't care what he says.
- 12:48Right, I want a hot warm you logger in my hand and left
- 12:52field at a Phillis game. You can't. You can't do that, dude.
- 12:56You ain't gonna coffee that. You can't make that happen. But I'll
- 13:00go back to like reality here and being a little progressive. It's like we
- 13:03do have to we have to realize as we get older, and I'm around
- 13:07a lot of adults who talk down to kids, and it drives me crazy.
- 13:11I never do that to kids because I'm always like, I'm a fossil.
- 13:15You guys are the future. Like I'm going to coach you. Yeah,
- 13:18But however you experience sports, it's fine with me. I always have
- 13:20parents do my suddenly plays video games and for baseball, who doesn't watch it?
- 13:24That's fine. I don't care rights baseball. I don't give a shit
- 13:28how he does he understand the game? You know what I mean? Does
- 13:31he get what the game is? Is he coming out here on the field
- 13:35and playing there? All? Right? Then there you go. Doesn't matter
- 13:37to me. As long as they're actually trying and playing the sport. That's
- 13:41all. That's all I care about. We also have to realize we have
- 13:46to get more progressive in our heads because as the technology grows exponentially, so
- 13:52does the so does the difference in time where we have to like, like
- 13:56the advancement advancements in technology are going so fast. Yeah, like ten years
- 14:03turns into five turns into one, turns into a month. It's that fucking
- 14:07fast that technology is going. And if as us geezers ignore it and just
- 14:11be like, Nope, we got to hold onto this, Nope, we
- 14:13can't. If we do, we're like, we will be eighty years old
- 14:18by the time we're fifty if we don't catch up. As like as as
- 14:22this, I can only speak for gen X, right, you know,
- 14:24I see gen X people now, I'm just like, you are embarrassing.
- 14:28I know, like, do you remember how you were in the nineties,
- 14:31but O Kirk Cobain and we're gonna know, like you're you might as well
- 14:35be ninet years It might be my parents' age at this point. Like that's
- 14:37that's on it. I just read that article. I'm like, oh,
- 14:41it's one of these Yeah, oh god, I guess what we need.
- 14:43We need to change, not them. They're the ones that are dictating how
- 14:46we go forward. So absolutely I completely agree with you on it. Look,
- 14:50you know, we we get to a certain age and I think for
- 14:54some reason, innately, the majority of people, not all of not all
- 15:00of us, but the majority of people just kind of stop in terms of
- 15:03what their understanding is with the world. Eric last month, in the month
- 15:07of May twenty twenty three, I tried for the first time chat GPT and
- 15:13I was like, oh my god, this is amazing, And guess what
- 15:18I'm going to utilize it. I am going to continue to utilize it in
- 15:22a way that I can that is appropriate ethical, whether it's for my business
- 15:28or for other aspects of my life. I am going to use it because
- 15:31that is going to be a foundation of something else down the road that we
- 15:35may not just know that is coming at this point. Like you said,
- 15:39whether you know whether the technology is coming at us so rapidly and whether or
- 15:43not we are able to embrace it. It correlates into entertainment. It correlates
- 15:48into sports as well, something that we have to continue to keep our wrap
- 15:54our heads, I should say, around what it is to really understand where
- 15:58the technology is going, because if we do, we're still going to enjoy
- 16:03sports in the end. You know, like you said, nothing is ever
- 16:06going to take away go into the actual venue and actually be in there with
- 16:11your loved ones, or whether it's yourself taken in a game at Citizens Bank
- 16:15Park or at the Wells Fargo Center, wherever it is. Nothing's ever going
- 16:18to replace it. But we have to keep up with the technology if we're
- 16:22going to continue to enjoy sports through various sports media. I mean, for
- 16:27me, that seems like common sense. I know for other people it might
- 16:30not be in It might be difficult for people to change because inevitably, that's
- 16:33what we're talking about here. People innately do not like change. But it's
- 16:37got to happen. It's gonna happen for people a little more rapidly, I
- 16:41think. Correct. All right, that's it. I was taking a sip
- 16:47of my drink. No, No, you're absolutely right. Like again,
- 16:52I I'm surrounded by even some of my assistant coaches talk about like talk about
- 16:57like old the way it used to be in sports, and I'm just like,
- 17:00God, like, dude, your your kids, your kids nine or
- 17:04ten, Like, how do you how do you even like relate to him?
- 17:08Yeah? Seriously, that's the weird thing too. I'm always like struck
- 17:14by parents who don't who don't like abide by this or take it in.
- 17:18And I'm just like, you're how are you going to talk to your kid
- 17:22when he's twenty and you're fifty, like you might again, you might be
- 17:26one hundred and they're ten years old, exactly. That's how fast everything's moving.
- 17:32And if we don't keep up, I'm trying, dude. I mean,
- 17:34I work in tech, and I'm even I'm like, oh my god,
- 17:37like my so much is stuff on YouTube. I'm like, oh my
- 17:41god, I just want to bash a new window. But but it's the
- 17:45way he takes in, It's the way he takes in the news, sports,
- 17:48the whole thing, and I can't ignore it, right, It's rageous.
- 17:52Yeah, or I might as well just like go lay in my bed
- 17:55and just sleep until I'm gone. Exactly. Yeah, really quick. Yeah,
- 18:00with regard to this article too, because they did mention the Athletic and
- 18:03what has been going on there with the recent layoffs with certain beat reporters and
- 18:11just you know, not covering of certain teams. Like just like five years
- 18:15ago, the Athletic was just the new thing in sports writing and sports content.
- 18:22It was it was, It was fantastic. I got my subscription right
- 18:26away. I loved it. There was no advertisements, no pop ups,
- 18:30none of that shit at all. They were just they were awash and venture
- 18:33capital money. The company. The company just rapidly expanded its news rooms,
- 18:38moving into nearly fifty markets and just covering hundreds and hundreds of teams. Now
- 18:44we're to point five years later where they had to lay people off because of
- 18:48what we're talking about, the changing landscape of how people are absorbing their content
- 18:52from a sports perspective. It's not that these reporters weren't any good. Athletic
- 18:56reporters are fucking fantastic. They are incredible in terms of their reporting, how
- 19:02they actually write and and and yes they did. They launched on a promise
- 19:07to restore real sports journalism. They did that. I'd give like Ken Rosenthal
- 19:12and everything that he did with that site all the credit in the world.
- 19:17But after five years we're here at this point. Seriously, in ten twenty
- 19:22years, the athletic probably isn't going to be around it. If it is
- 19:25now, it's probably not gonna be the most relevant. Now. We've talked
- 19:27about this about this on the show a bunch of times. Like the advent
- 19:33of social media and like the different the amount of voices that are out there,
- 19:37it actually brings out really cool voices that probably would not have got a
- 19:41lot of giant back in the day. Like we talked um the our Phillies
- 19:45people are just incredible. You know, Um, but you also you open
- 19:51the door to the morons and the idiots to name them, but and and
- 19:56and they they kind of they kind of sour the the people like the people
- 20:02at the athletic who have legit like thirty forty years of experience doing this stuff.
- 20:07And one thing I don't like about the and this, I mean this
- 20:11happens with every generation. The new generation always like looks at the old one,
- 20:12goes, who needs you? We We're the new one, right.
- 20:17It's like, well, but you kind of suck. Like I get that
- 20:21you're new and your younger voice and you're a little more boisterous about things,
- 20:23you have more opinions, but guess what, you don't have the reporting experience.
- 20:29You don't have the knowledge. And sometimes and I'm sure I sound old
- 20:33right now, but um you you you you open yourself up to just shitty
- 20:38shitty coverage ye like, and you don't even talk about the sports anymore.
- 20:44And I but again, like that's that's on you as the viewer or the
- 20:48intaker of the the social media or the technology is like you have to like
- 20:53pick and choose, like who do you think is valid? Like who's who?
- 20:57Who is your likes your next generation athletic people. Yeah. Yeah,
- 21:03but as we know, there are so many shitty ones out there and we
- 21:07do, we do, and there's so many good ones too. That the
- 21:08next athletic individual is going to be out there and they're going to be providing
- 21:11the content to us in whatever way it is going to be, whether it's
- 21:15video, whether it's written, whatever the case is. You know, there's
- 21:18always something new on the horizon, so we'd we'd love to know what your
- 21:22thoughts are out there. Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. We would

- 21:56at Jeffrey Underscore, Warren in the show at Philadelphia st We are going to
- 22:00take a break right now, and we're going to be back in just a
- 22:03bit talk about the Phillies and the Philadelphia seventy Sixers. Stick with us,
- 22:07we'll be right back, all right, folks, We are back, Eric
- 22:11and I are going to be getting into this Phillies team. What's happening here
- 22:15in this NL least. And also we're gonna talking about James Harden and what
- 22:21his situation looks like with the Sixers or maybe even without the Sixers. And
- 22:25we got a great guest, great interview. It's what we're throwing down on
- 22:27the table this week. Even more Sixers talk with Sean Bernard. So Eric,
- 22:33let's get into this Phillies team here again. A middling team, as
- 22:37we like to say and have said throughout this season, because that's what they've
- 22:41been, a middling team in the NL East. Look, I am so
- 22:45incredibly happy the Mets have taken a huge shit and just completely imploded at this
- 22:51point in the season. I don't know how from a mental standpoint they kind
- 22:55of get back into the swing of things within the division itself, but man,
- 23:00the Marlins are still making a lot of noise. Their second in the
- 23:03division. They they just won't go away. They will not have a significant
- 23:07loosing streak at all. It's amazing what the Marlins are doing. And right
- 23:11now as we're playing this, we're playing this, as we're recording this,
- 23:15the Phillies are playing the Chicago Cubs first game of that series. When you
- 23:19hear this podcast, they're going to be concluding the series against the Cubs and
- 23:25starting the next series against the Nationals. Here, the bats need a lot
- 23:29more consistency for the Phillies. We are seeing some consistent bats with this first
- 23:33game against the Cubs here Ranger Suarez pitching a great game, but again coming
- 23:40down to them not taking advantage of opportunities runners in scoring position. Again is
- 23:45a theme with this Phillies team where they just cannot seem to get over the
- 23:48hump. It's incredible. The lack of consistency with the talent that they have
- 23:53on this roster, Eric is incredible. And there's still a middling team here,
- 24:00but I think they're I get that feeling that we're gonna have that explosion
- 24:03at some point here in the near future. I don't know that's what That's
- 24:06what I'm thinking here with the Cubs and the Gnats. I don't know where
- 24:07are you at with this team right now? Nah? I mean seriously,
- 24:12I mean the Braves are the clear favorite, so absolutely really damn good.
- 24:18Um. I was struck by my dad never watched his baseball. I went
- 24:25over to his house last Friday because he turned seventy three. He finally watched.
- 24:29Uh. He's one of those guys like, you know, the sports
- 24:30are too political. Yeah, and he gave up for a while, but
- 24:36he was like, yo, I was like, I'm gonna I'm gonna check
- 24:38in with the Phillies Braves and I want to watch the series. And he
- 24:42was like, turn it on. He had no clue what was going on,
- 24:45like like where the standings were, and he's like, I guess the
- 24:48Phillies won one and he saw the standings like we're eight games out after when
- 24:53and that kind of told me everything I need to know. It's like,
- 24:56oh, yeah, they're just kind of just kind of hanging you know,
- 25:00uh, not onlike last year. But this team does not have the feel
- 25:03of last year at all. Um. The starting pitching is just they're use
- 25:08the term middling. That's just kind of where they are. Like there are
- 25:11three games over five hundred right now. Um, the Marlins are hot,
- 25:15which you know when you when you have what how many Top ten picks for
- 25:19what thirty years in a row? Yeah, it would be good eventually.
- 25:22Um, Trey Turner has been a little, not a little, he's been
- 25:26He's been a not great, not fun to watch this year. I mean,
- 25:32um, but honestly, the pitching is the big aspect of this.
- 25:34It's just not working out. Um, Aaron Nola another one of those seasons
- 25:38where you're like, is he an ace? Do we? Uh? Do
- 25:41we? Is a an al Teimer? Do we throw him a ship ton
- 25:44of money at the next contract? I know he's up there this year.
- 25:48It's it's amazing. It's his value has dropped dramatically. He needs to go
- 25:55to the school of h my god, like who are the all time?
- 26:00Like finally year their contract guys. There's a lot of NBA guys it used
- 26:04to do that all the time, like have one awesome you know, at
- 26:07the end of their contract for the one he's going the opposite direction. He's
- 26:11like, I have I have a contract coming up, and I'm gonna shit
- 26:15the bed, you know with the hell Um, not the way to go,
- 26:18my opinion. But uh, um, just Zach Wheeler has been been
- 26:22hand like just the whole team. Like and we talked at the end of
- 26:26the year like if Nick castellanis is a big year, We're we're gonna be
- 26:30in good shape guys, and he is. But uh no, I don't
- 26:34think we knew that. Uh, I mean we all knew that, you
- 26:40know, uh that Schoreber was gonna you know, maybe kind of have a
- 26:42step back think three Yeah, thanks right, one eighty one, um with
- 26:51a with an ops of seven fifty four not good. Alec Bohm is just
- 26:56gonna after a hot start, just to just you know, I know it's
- 27:00only h I was about to make a joke of I know it's only June,
- 27:04but it's almost like All Star break so yeah, um yeah, it's
- 27:08just they're not a fun team to watch, and they were fun to watch
- 27:12last year. Um, just I don't know, there's not much to say
- 27:17about them. It's it's remember all those years like we would try and we
- 27:22would on the show we try and stretch the Phillies talk were trying to figure
- 27:26out like okay, what it's the dead of summer. Um, there's eagles,
- 27:30there's no free agency. The Sixers are kind of, you know,
- 27:33doing nothing. Um, let's just stretch that that Phillies talk, and we're
- 27:37just like, yeah, um, you know, stop not bad, Like
- 27:45I feel like that's Whate're out with the Phillies right now. It's such a
- 27:47letdown. Yeah, it's such a letdown after a World Series appearance, and
- 27:51and and in a year where, my god, even if them going to
- 27:55the playoffs was a big deal last year, just getting in was a big
- 27:59deal. It's like, all right, I'm like, yeah, after you
- 28:03know, what seemed like three hundred years, they're in the playoffs finally,
- 28:07and then oh my gosh, they're winning series after series after series. Holy
- 28:12shit, they're going to the World Series. My god, you know.
- 28:15And then with the way the Eagles were playing at that point as well,
- 28:18you know, there was just that feeling in the city. And that's what
- 28:22I'm missing as a fan. I'm missing that feeling. And I know that
- 28:26magic really did start to happen for the Phillies toward the latter part of twenty
- 28:32twenty two season. I know that I get that, but I'm missing that
- 28:36feeling because at the end of the day, you look yes on paper This
- 28:40team is absolutely stacked, and they should be competitive with the Atlanta Braves.
- 28:45There is absolutely no reason they shouldn't be competitive. But why the chemistry and
- 28:49why the inconsistencies persist and remain. I have no idea. Nobody has any
- 28:53answer to it. I mean, if Rob Thompson had an answer for it,
- 28:57we know, and he'd be making some other perhaps lineup decisions or when
- 29:02it comes to bullpen usage, you have some you have some answers for us
- 29:06here, but we don't. I think it's that feeling from last year still
- 29:11that we are absolutely craving with this team, and even though they look fantastic
- 29:15on paper, they're just playing average type of baseball in the grand scheme of
- 29:22things. And it's just that I think that is what's really leading to the
- 29:25disappointment and where they're at right now because they're still very much in contention for
- 29:29a wildcard spot. They're they're in contention for that, of course, but
- 29:33just coming off the World Series still and I understand, folks, it's we're
- 29:37at the end of June early July here. I understand it's like, okay,
- 29:41enough about the World Series, but there still is that feeling in a
- 29:45lot of fans hearts about what last season actually meant to us, And I
- 29:49think there's something to be said for that. Eric. I think the difference
- 29:52is we don't have Bryce Elder or Spencer Strider starting pitching. Yeah for the
- 29:59Paves. We don't have Ronald Lacuna who's just destroying the ball. We don't
- 30:02have that young Miami team just just stacked dude, like they you got Alvarez
- 30:07de la Cruz, like the Hojorey Seller is having a great year. Yeah,
- 30:12there's a lot of there's a lot of good narratives in the least and
- 30:17the Phillies don't have a single one. That's probably the like the like the
- 30:19saddest piece of it. Like I was, Bryce Harper's return was supposed to
- 30:23be like the big like boom and he's having a good year, right,
- 30:26and the combination of him, Castellana's having a back a comeback year, and
- 30:30Trey Turner being at the top of the lineup that was supposed to be like,
- 30:34man if Harper comes back, man we got a good squad pitching is
- 30:38there? The bullpens in place? And it's just not there. But I'll
- 30:42say this, I'll try to end this on a positive note. We didn't
- 30:47think they were there last year either, right at all? Like the point
- 30:49I remember last two and last it was kind of pathetic, you know,
- 30:52we were again that that there's nothing worse on this podcast, dude. Then
- 30:57after the Sixers like free and see in the draft and the Eagles aren't really
- 31:02doing anything and fuck the Flyers, my god, who cares? But like,
- 31:07but all we have to do is like focus on the Phillies and we're
- 31:10doing top three lists like the craziest NFL injuries, like like we're just trying
- 31:15to make shit up for the show, like the Philly When the Phillies are
- 31:18like just kind of like dwindling, not doing much, this shows us this
- 31:22is shows a stretch and that's where they are right now. It can be
- 31:26a slog, yeah, a bit of a slog. Yeah, that's when
- 31:30Jeff texts me like, okay, uh, what do you think we're Stoner's
- 31:36got a new ideas? That is some of my favorite stuff, Like just
- 31:41well you got a good top three list, Philly five. Good way to
- 31:48end that discussion. Let us know what you're thinking about with this Phillies team.
- 31:51Are they gonna get it together? Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com.
- 31:55We'd love to read your email here on the show and respond to it.
- 31:59All right, well, let's get into now, let's get into James
- 32:02Harden Eric here, because he really is the story. But I'm sorry,
- 32:07we have to. I know it's on the agenda's topic, but oh my
- 32:13god, again, and I was gonna say again, is something we're just
- 32:15kind of pulling out of pulling out of the air. Okay, James Harden
- 32:20is a hot topic right now in Philly sports. What's he gonna do?
- 32:22Blah blah blah blah blah. But really, I mean, at the end
- 32:24of the day, there was nothing to do. I have been used to
- 32:28every year us doing the podcast after the NBA draft, and there's that excitement.
- 32:34There's that excitement that we have had in the past. Yes, even
- 32:37when Mark l Foltz was drafted. Eric, we would get on this podcast,
- 32:42we'd get in front of these mics, and we'd be pretty excited.
- 32:45This was like the first year and Leonard and I were talking about it on
- 32:47the pod last week. The lack of just excitement of where we are with
- 32:52the Sixers team right now, and a lot of that is because they didn't
- 32:54have their first round pick, which they lost last year when they acquired James
- 32:59Harden. The second round pick was taken away from him by the NBA for
- 33:02the tampering. And it all comes down to what James Harden is going to
- 33:07do. And it's sad and it's pathetic, it really is, because,
- 33:10like what leverage does he actually have with regard to his contract negotiations? And
- 33:15that's what we wanted to really get into here because like for me, looking
- 33:22at and seeing articles and reading and just digesting some content about the fact that
- 33:27this gentleman wants to be paid a supermax contract in the neighborhood of what four
- 33:30years for two hundred and ten million dollars? Like what leverage does he have
- 33:37in order to get that in Philadelphia? Aside from the fact that Daryl Morey
- 33:42does love him, you know, but from a financial standpoint and from a
- 33:45logical and reasonable standpoint given the fact that he's thirty four years old this August,
- 33:51he has lost how many steps now at this point, He's had injury
- 33:53issues the last three season, last three seasons and years he's a he's ball
- 34:00dominant. I mean, he's even recently hinted that he wants to have the
- 34:04ball more and have more control over the offense. Eric and then on the
- 34:08contrary, Nick Nurse has publicly stated that he wants more team ball movement and
- 34:15less one on one type of play, So that that should be interesting to
- 34:19watch if James Harden does come back to Philly. So, like, I
- 34:22wonder what type of leverage James Harden actually thinks he has to get a supermax
- 34:27contract. Meanwhile, I'm thinking, okay, if they really do want him,
- 34:30seems like a two year deal maybe in between like thirty and thirty five
- 34:36million. I mean, that might be doable. But a supermax contract for
- 34:39who James Harden his right now and what he has really given this team over
- 34:45the past one and a half seasons, Like, I don't know, man,
- 34:49like he can he can say bye bye as far as I'm concerned he
- 34:52can at this point, because I just don't think the guy has the leverage
- 34:57to be demanding a supermax contract at this point. Don't know, what are
- 35:00your thoughts here? So the Nick Nurse comments did strike me because the one
- 35:08thing we did discount I think by the end of the year, because we
- 35:12watched him just melt down. He had those two incredible games against the Celtics,
- 35:16but we also forget how atrocious he was in Game seven, in Game
- 35:22six or a Game five, and but the one thing he did really well,
- 35:29he was an awesome pastor this year and he was one of the assists
- 35:31leaders in the NBA. I'm looking at a stat right now. High value
- 35:36assists is kind of a newer, newer metric, and he was actually fourth
- 35:40overall last year at nine point six high value assists, which is three point
- 35:44rim and free throw assists. And he actually kind of did He did kind
- 35:49of step away from that role of being a bald dominant guard and did actually
- 35:53play the guard spot pretty well as a passer. So he does have that
- 35:58capability. So I think Nick Nurse was kind of speaking to that in case
- 36:00he does come back. But what does strike me though, is that,
- 36:06um, he I don't think he hasn't in him to do it all the
- 36:08time, and especially he can do in the regular season. Regular season NBA
- 36:13basketball is a completely different monster than the playoffs. During the season, you
- 36:17can do that, but when it comes down to it, and he watched
- 36:21it, if he didn't have that game won against the Celtics and they lose
- 36:24him like five games. We're sitting here going James Harden is the worst basketball
- 36:28player of all time. I don't want every want to see him again.
- 36:30But he had a game one and but he couldn't. He couldn't get back
- 36:35to If you can't score, you can't get back to the ten assist James
- 36:38Harden against a really good defensive Celtics team and you just can't. You can't
- 36:44combine regular season with playoff basketball if you're a James Harden, after you've lost,
- 36:49like I mean, you say, lost a step, ten steps,
- 36:52I think he's lost. Yeah, don't anymore, I'm sure. But what
- 36:59I will say on four uh, in James Harden's defense is that you talk
- 37:04about leverage, he actually has all the leverage because he held this team hostage,
- 37:09as he's done every team. And this is kind of the new thing
- 37:14in the superstar era, is that players can force their teams to trade not
- 37:20only themselves, but also all of their prospects, all their draft capital for
- 37:25that player. And once you're stuck with that player and you have in you,
- 37:30you like it's it's you. They're all gone. It's just in a
- 37:34weight like it's an oasis, like everything's all of your draft picks, all
- 37:37of your capital's gone. You actually have all the leverage as a player because
- 37:40Daryl Morey has nothing to trade to get you out of town. I got
- 37:45you, So now you now he actually has all the leverage to resign because
- 37:50what's more, you're gonna do let him walk, Like, what are you
- 37:52going to bring in? You can't trade them, you can't sign and trade
- 37:55them. Um, once he decided the fact that he's kind of sting on
- 38:00his player option right now tells me everything I need to know that he thinks
- 38:02he has the leverage because Creations is gonna is gonna like fly by, and
- 38:08by the time he's like now he's gonna work, he's not gonna work.
- 38:13There's no one else to sign with the with the money you're gonna say by
- 38:16not signing a James Harden. So I'm sure he loves Daryl Morey. Daryl
- 38:21Morey obviously loves him. I got it. I'm sure that I'm surprising to
- 38:23make out when he got off the plane to Philly. Um. But unfortunately
- 38:30in the Superstar era, he has all the leverage because now Maury has to
- 38:34resign him because what else is he gonna do. He's gonna wait six days
- 38:37in the free agency. He's gonna sign what Jeremy Grant for one hundred and
- 38:40fifty million dollars. And that's where that's where in the NBA is at right
- 38:45now. And I love this league. But unfortunately, the likes of James
- 38:50Harden, who not a likable person. Let's just let's just say it,
- 38:55right, and but he, he unfortunately has all the leverage and Darryl Morey
- 39:00has almost zero. And that's that's the state of the NBA. And it's
- 39:05my favorite sport, my favorite league. But that's that's what it's come to.
- 39:08It sucks because he has taken a step back. It just boggles my
- 39:13mind. I understand what you're saying. I completely get it, and I
- 39:16know that that is the case, but it does boggle my mind that a
- 39:21player like him, who over such a long period of time has been one
- 39:28of the NBA greats. I mean, look, he's made a ton of
- 39:31money in his career. He was named one of the top seventy five greatest
- 39:35players in NBA history. The ring is the only thing missing from his resume
- 39:39basically at this point, but he has taken how many steps back, like
- 39:45we have said, And it boggles my mind that he can say, yeah,
- 39:49you're gonna have to sign me, or you know, you're gonna have
- 39:53to sign James hard what he'll sign somewhere that he went, you will decisures,
- 40:00don't do it. He'll make money somewhere. And that's how the lead
- 40:02works. It sucks because like I would think he'd want to I don't know.
- 40:07I think he'd want to try for the Ring at this point. But
- 40:09it's James Harden. It doesn't matter to him. Probably, you know,
- 40:14next year when we're in the dulgrum of the Phillies five hundred season again.
- 40:17Yeah, here's a good list, top three NBA players of all time that
- 40:23the Ring wasn't that big of a deal. That's a great list. Why
- 40:29don't we do it in a couple of weeks from now? Exactly, you're
- 40:31right where the Phillies are, like forty or forty five and forty like that.
- 40:38Yeah, let's do that list. Because James Harden's playing number one.
- 40:43We'll know where he's at by then. He might be the only guy in
- 40:46the list, honestly, Yeah, I mean, yeah, so maybe Westbrook's
- 40:50on that list too, but that that was the saddest thing too. By
- 40:53the way, the draft was last week. It's my favorite draft. I
- 40:57love the NBA Draft. I was so into it. And it's the first
- 41:00year. So I think somebody posted on Twitter a white board of the sixers
- 41:05like draft stuff, and it was like blank. Ye I was like literally
- 41:09nothing on. I'm like, holy shit, Like and I said a couple
- 41:13of weeks ago, we should really do a two hour breakdown of the process
- 41:17because we're well passed at this point. I think once and be like leaves
- 41:22Town, which you probably will in the next two years. Um, that's
- 41:25when we really have to do it. But like that was another like that
- 41:30was another sign of like, oh my god, this is really over.
- 41:32Yeah, now we're talking about James Harden and signing a two million down.
- 41:36I'm like, oh my god, this is this is this is your nightmare
- 41:37scenario. This is where we didn't want to be. And um, but
- 41:42I can I just say besides hard and have all the leverage and close us
- 41:45out here. Oh my god. Okay, so we have we have another
- 41:51player on the last year of his deal, and we got Toby Harris,
- 41:54who's just just that guy like, so, like, you're probably that guy
- 42:01in our friend group, right, he just kind of hangs just you know,
- 42:04he's just always kind of there. Who yeah, yeah, like like
- 42:07well, like I don't contribute much. Yeah, I mean David and Len
- 42:10we're friends. And then Jeff he's just kind of appeared. Oh there's that
- 42:14guy that's Steve's roommate. Shit, yeah it's Jeff. Dave's like, oh,
- 42:20he's a good dude. And it's like there's to be Harris like oh
- 42:22yeah, what's up man, hey doing? And by the time you realize,
- 42:27you're like, oh my, he's been here fucking ever with the and
- 42:31then to top it off, and the last year was contract. His dad
- 42:36chimes in on Twitter and goes, why would you're not using my son who's
- 42:38in a complete assassin on offense? He's an assassin scorer. Is he's the
- 42:47same guy that average twelve points against the Celtics and the semi component. Really
- 42:52that that's that's your son, right, that's the assassin. You're talking a
- 42:55guy who played for forty two minutes and scored two scored two points in this
- 43:01playoffs. He is he is the all time the past five years guy that
- 43:07my, my, my brother and my my, my best friend Macra.
- 43:09We were big Sixers guys like we text like by the fourth quarter we text
- 43:14each other. Tobias Harris four points like he's just that guy, Like,
- 43:19what the has he? Is he on the court? What the hell happened?
- 43:22Right? Is he in a uniformed? Is he injured? Like he's
- 43:25the all time? And for his dad to do that, of course you
- 43:29have to. If my son was on the Sixers, I'd be like Darrell
- 43:32resoing him, of course, but like, my god, I just that
- 43:36was my favorite part of the Sixers off season, which is pretty sad because
- 43:38they haven't done shit. Right man, you just compared me to Tobias Harris.
- 43:44I'm sorry I didn't. Man, how my dad call you guys?
- 43:49Then he won't, he won't remember it. That's good though. It's better
- 43:54right man? Oh boy, that one's gonna stick with me for a little
- 44:00bit. I'm the Tobias Harris of our group. I can't wait to text
- 44:05all the guys I just called you that in the show Man days. Gonna
- 44:08give me a thumbs up? Good call? Oh man? All right,
- 44:15hold on, who's Mike then? Should be? H Mike? I know
- 44:19this is super inside, but like, yeah, who's Mike. He hasn't
- 44:22been in our group for years? Is he Hanky? Is he like?
- 44:27Is he just like, No, he's not Hanky. Yeah, because hanky
- 44:30you put it all together. Yeah, yeah, No, he's not Hanky.
- 44:32He would probably be who Ish Smith maybe maybe actually no, you know
- 44:42what, you know what he's he's very Ben Simmons ish. You know what
- 44:45I mean, given some given us some good stuff. You're giving us some
- 44:50good stuff for years. Potential is always there. And then would you say
- 44:55a complete kuk? And then yeah, and then turned into like the complete
- 44:59kuk and just oh my gosh, what happened to this guy? Like what
- 45:01what? Like what the hell happened to him? And then we just don't
- 45:06and then he's just out of our lives. Jeff, great call, thank
- 45:09ye, wait to bring it back. Nice. You're not the device Harris
- 45:14anymore? Oh, thank you, thank you. Yeah, you're you're you're
- 45:19your your Curry. I'm fine with that, all right, fine Jesus,
- 45:24all right, buddy, I'll let you go here. And for this that
- 45:28was a fun discussion. Serius. I was like, I'm gonna go to
- 45:30bed tonight with tears in my eyes after that one. Follow it, go
- 45:37ahead and what is it? Good night to Bias good odd jeez. Follow
- 45:40Eric on Twitter at brick Pollit. We're gonna take a break here, let
- 45:45him go. We got more Sixers talk on the way. Stick with us.
- 45:50We'll be right back. All right, folks, we are back.
- 45:53More Sixers talk coming your way right now about what we can expect this off
- 45:58season and what this regular season look like in terms of talent on this team.
- 46:01It's what we're throwing down on the table and now on the table to
- 46:08get into this Philadelphia seventy Sixers off season. We have a great guest with
- 46:13us this week. You can find him on Twitter at Sewan Underscore Bernard one.
- 46:16He is a great, great follow love having him on the podcast.
- 46:21Sean Buddy, thanks so much for joining us here. There's a lot to
- 46:23get into with regard to this Sixers team. Man. Yeah, absolutely,
- 46:28it's gonna be back on here. I'm gonna be chatting again. And yeah,
- 46:30even though we are in the kickoff of the dead season. In the
- 46:32off season, it feels like the Sixers cannot stop finding themselves in the mixer,
- 46:37at least in the news. So at least we got stuff to talk
- 46:38about exactly. My co host Eric and I we just got done talking about
- 46:42the Sixers from a leverage standpoint with James Harden, which we're gonna get into
- 46:46right off the bat. But first and foremost, I know you've done some
- 46:49work over at the Philly Sports Network in terms of your Sixers writing. But
- 46:52where else can folks find you? Out there on the internets? Yeah,
- 46:55a little bit of everywhere. So you can follow me on Twitter at Sean
- 46:59Underscoreburn one, I run Pickspop Media, so he can check that out.
- 47:01On YouTube, we do a ton of good stuff over there. I got
- 47:05some Phillies and Egos stuff popping out as well as from General College NBA.
- 47:07And then check me out on Fox one or two five the Gambler as well,
- 47:09so involved in a ton of their social media and just throughout the week
- 47:14popping on the airways whenever I get a chance. So it's a ton of
- 47:16good stuff going down on their YouTube channel and their radio airwaves as well,
- 47:20doing a lot of good stuff, showing a lot of great content. So
- 47:22let's get into this Philadelphia seventy six Ers off season. As I mentioned,
- 47:28my co host and I Eric, we were just talking about the leverage that
- 47:30James Harden has or doesn't have during the course of this off season. We
- 47:35were talking about the fact of the leverage that he actually does have. And
- 47:37it amazes me that a guy who has taken a few steps back in terms
- 47:43of his play on the court and just like kind of his demeanor and especially
- 47:45after what we saw in the last round and even last game of the playoffs
- 47:52from the Sixers this past season, that he actually does have this kind of
- 47:54leverage And I'm so completely mind boggled by it. He really, it seems,
- 48:00has boxed the Sixers potentially Daryl Morey into a corner in terms of potential
- 48:07contract negotiation. So what are your thoughts on the leverage that he does have
- 48:10and do you see things with him and this Sixers team coming to a positive
- 48:16conclusion? What does that positive conclusion mean? How do you see things shaken
- 48:22out with his next contract here? What are your thoughts? Sean, Yeah,
- 48:25it is a very interesting conversation in a situation, I mean, dating
- 48:29back the last offseason, the mindset was James Harden takes a little bit of
- 48:31a pay cut, that he gets the short term deal and that this offseason
- 48:35is when he would look for that long term security. He still finds himself
- 48:38in that same situation. And when you talk about leverage, the biggest thing
- 48:42that the Sixers have working against them is there's just not a better option out
- 48:45there that even though James Harden, for share, is not the MVP version
- 48:47of himself and is absolutely regressed, and there's a guy that I personally am
- 48:52a little concerned handing out a long term deal, and there's plenty of reasons
- 48:54to support that when you look out there, like Fred Van Fleet's probably the
- 48:59closest thing Kyrie Irving in the conversation, but James Harden is up there with
- 49:01the premier free agents. And on top of that, the Sixers just don't
- 49:05have these massive cap numbers to be throwing out there that they will lose a
- 49:08ton of money if they let James Harden walk because he is that max slot
- 49:12and that they can go over because he's their own players. So they're in
- 49:15a difficult position from that regard. And on the other side of things,
- 49:17if you're looking at it from the James Harden perspective, like I can see
- 49:22how he paints this and feels like he owed this like, this was a
- 49:23guy who has answered the call. He led the NBA and assist was a
- 49:27twenty and eleven guy, scored forty points in two playoff games and really led
- 49:30the Sixers in those areas. So like from his perspective, I do kind
- 49:34of get it. But at the same time, if I'm the Sixers,
- 49:36I'm not feeling very confident handing him a long term deal for a ton of
- 49:39money, and that seems to be the way things are trending. It really
- 49:42does. And again, yes, you talk about the assists that he had
- 49:45throughout this past season, Eric and I were just talking about it. You
- 49:47also have the fact that he was able to pull together a couple really amazing
- 49:52postseason games. That's all fine and well, but I think like at the
- 49:57end of the day, it's just completely mind boggling. We know he's taken
- 50:00a step back and given his performance again, especially in that last game when
- 50:04it actually really did matter, even in getting it, it's just it boggles
- 50:09my mind that this is the situation that we're in. And I think from
- 50:14an overall perspective, Sean, it doesn't necessarily make me want to look forward
- 50:21to this upcoming season in a way, and I know that sounds bizarre given
- 50:23where this team has been, the hopes that we've had as fans. I
- 50:28don't know, are you thinking the same way at all? Or might just
- 50:30being a pessimistic cynic here? Yeah? No, I think everybody thinks similarly
- 50:35in that regard. Like we're talking about a team that has once again failed
- 50:37to make it past the second round, and the game plan seems to be
- 50:40that we're just gonna throw a couple of band aids on this and run it
- 50:43back and see if it's a little different. And I think the slant that
- 50:46Darryl Morey is putting on this is that he believes that Doc Rivers was the
- 50:50root of the issue. More so than that, I guess he is acknowledged
- 50:52publicly it has been, because that is the really only the real major change
- 50:57that we're seeing so far is the changing coach with Nick. I do think
- 51:00it's gonna make a difference more so than people expect. Just having a new
- 51:04system, getting some more movement, having some actual plays be called on a
- 51:07regular basis, things like that will all be refreshing. But I still think
- 51:09that there's some serious roster construction issues that need to be addressed that they either
- 51:14don't have the means to address or don't intend on, and so I honestly
- 51:17have that same feeling that I'm nervous running into a wall, and I just
- 51:21don't have a lot of confidence that James Harden can pick up that magic come
- 51:24in other playoffs, and frankly it wasn't good enough in the first place.
- 51:28Absolutely, you mentioned Doc Rivers. We are certainly going to get to him
- 51:30during our conversation. In fact, we're going to close our discussion with him,
- 51:34So folks stick around for that for sure, because he recently did an
- 51:37interview and certainly going to talk about it for sure. But I want to
- 51:40get into another gentleman, another talent on this team, Eric and I actually
- 51:45mentioned him as well because of what his dad recently said, dear lord,
- 51:51and that's Tobias Harris. And I guess conventional wisdom is telling us that Tobias
- 51:55Harris is likely going to be traded here, you know, and whether whether
- 51:59it's for a crumb cookie or not, you know, what kind of realistic
- 52:02and logical return should US Sixers fans expect with a potential Tobias Harris trade this
- 52:08offseason? Because I think if it's gonna happen, it's probably gonna happen this
- 52:12offseason, right Sean, Yeah, I mean one would think it wouldn't completely
- 52:15surprise me if Derren Moore tries to hold out to the deadline. The biggest
- 52:19thing that these Sixers have going from him from a market standpoint when it comes
- 52:22to Tobias is that expiring deal. With teams looking to clear cap room,
- 52:25it's now an appealing contract to take on for a season or half a season
- 52:29and then clear that cap space at the tail end. But as Tobias pointed
- 52:32out in his interview when he was asked about this at the Fanatics event,
- 52:36is you really it's not easy to replace a guy that the Sixers are still
- 52:39counting on pretty heavily. For all the criticism that Tobias catches, he's still
- 52:44a necessary part of this team. A guy that logs major minutes a forty
- 52:46plus minute a game guy, A guy that is their only really true wing
- 52:51on roster. PJ. Tucker is probably the only guy in that conversation,
- 52:53although I wouldn't consider him a true wing. Same with Danthony Melton. A
- 52:57guy who's like six foot two simply isn't gonna be able to guard these six
- 53:00foot six to six foot nine wings on the guy, So they need like
- 53:02a guy that can be a better version of Tobias Harris, not just tossing
- 53:07them over for nothing. I still think there's a trade to be had.
- 53:08I think that there's enough moving parts around the NBA right now, and I
- 53:12think that enough teams looking to clear cap space that you can find something.
- 53:15But I do think that we gotta be a little realistic that it looking more
- 53:19towards like the Buddy Heeled tier of trades or the Bohun Bogdanovich tier of trades,
- 53:22of those kind of caliber of players, not this superstar move that I
- 53:25think some people are holding out hope for. Yeah, and I think the
- 53:29Sixers heading into this upcoming season two, we know, and you kind of
- 53:32touched on it. We know that they're definitely going to need some role players
- 53:37this next season if they're really going to be competitive and dare I say,
- 53:42get out of that second round of the playoffs, if they can even get
- 53:44to that point. I do wonder this is interesting to think about. I
- 53:46do wonder if Dario Sark would come back to the team, that would be
- 53:52an interesting reunion. He's very capable of playing both the four and the five
- 53:55spots and could fit in with what Nick Nurse wants to do. Potentially from
- 54:00an offensive perspective, you know, maybe they'll look at a talent like Kevin
- 54:04Love, who knows, you know, what kind of what kind of role
- 54:07players, Sean, do you think they need and do you think from a
- 54:13talent perspective, who would fit in nicely on this team with what Nick Nurse
- 54:15wants to do. What is there now in terms of where certain players roles
- 54:21might be that maybe here for the long term. Are there a couple of
- 54:23players that you're really keeping your eyes on here of this offseason that Sixers might
- 54:27acquire? Yeah, definitely. And one of the interesting mixes is we're seeing
- 54:30how this rosters can be formed to Nick Nurse's kind of mindset, because it's
- 54:35a very very drastically different roster construction in Philadelphia than what he was used to
- 54:38do in Toronto. You mentioned Dario sarg I think that's an interesting name.
- 54:43Nurse has been pretty known to in his offensive systems play for the big man
- 54:45as a passer in a way that we've never seen what Joel Embien in a
- 54:47way that I think Sarge would be pretty good at. That isn't an appealing
- 54:51name that I think there's a possibility the Sixers also bringing over Philip Petri sav
- 54:54who plays a little bit similar in that way, and same with a new
- 54:58two way edition as a list to Bellas out of Arizona. All guys that
- 55:00are more of a big man comfortable with the ball in their hand. Outside
- 55:05of that, I mean, the Sixers are going to be digging through the
- 55:06bargain beIN a little bit as far as their targets, but there's still some
- 55:08names that could be helpful as far as arch type of players. For me,
- 55:12I want these athletic two way wings, and I get they don't grow
- 55:15on trees. They're not the easiest to find, but a guy like a
- 55:17Tory Craig is somebody I'm holding out hope for Damian Lee. Even Reggie Jackson's
- 55:22the guy wouldn't mind taking a flyer on who I think his value even in
- 55:24a Dylan Brooks, I could be talked into guys like that that are at
- 55:28least closer to that mold of I guess modern basketball two way guys with some
- 55:31athleticism that we can surround and shooters that you can never get enough of.
- 55:35So you know what a Nabby is another guy I've seen some buzz about I
- 55:38had an awesome year last year, so there's there are still guys out there.
- 55:42Even though they're not gonna be shopping at this premier targets to these big
- 55:45names. They're still useful players that I think they can get their hands on,
- 55:47and I would love to see it. I saw some tweets from you
- 55:51with regard to the Bradley Beale situation, and there were so many in sixers
- 55:55nations saying, oh, we gotta get Bradley Beal, we gotta make sure
- 55:58this happens, and everything's, oh my gosh, what's going on here?
- 56:00Like, are we really going to do something like that? I'm glad that
- 56:05it didn't happen. I would venture to say you are as well. Yeah,
- 56:07yeah, absolutely. And I think the one thing that hasn't gone recognized
- 56:13enough is with the new collective Bargaining Agreement, like we're essentially looking at a
- 56:15hardcap in the NBA for the first time, and no it's not stated like
- 56:20that, but with the repercussions that come when it comes to restrictions on trading
- 56:23draft picks, restrictions to your access to the mid level exception things like that
- 56:28when you're tapped out at a certain number. And if it was the Bradley
- 56:30Beale conversation trade to the Sixers, we're talking about Jess, Bradley Beale and
- 56:35Jowell Embiid making up seventy percent of the salary chat right, and don't get
- 56:40me wrong, too terrific players. I think Bradley Bale, purely from a
- 56:44basketball standpoint, has probably come a little bit underrated to this point before the
- 56:46numbers that you have to take with him, it puts you in a difficult
- 56:50spot. Now, the Suns are absolutely taking whatever. We'll just take the
- 56:53best players and figure it out as we go. So we'll see how it
- 56:55works out to them, but I am glad to avoid it in Philly.
- 56:59Absolutely absolutely. We'll moving on here. I wanted to talk about another piece
- 57:01of talent on this team, and that's Tyrese Maxie. We've all loved watching
- 57:07Tyrese Maxie develop and I remember the last time that you were on the PSC
- 57:12podcast show here, Sean, we talked about his role on the team since
- 57:15Doc was really moving him all around in terms of his role. It was
- 57:19interesting to kind of watch that and see what happened to him. From a
- 57:22developmental standpoint. What kind of role should we expect from Maxie this coming season,
- 57:27given that Nick Nurse is going to come in with a different game plan,
- 57:30a different philosophy, Where does Tyrese Maxie go from here? In your
- 57:34opinion only up In my mind, I'm pretty optimistic about what Nick Nurse can
- 57:37bring out of tyres Maxie. I think he's the closest mold to a Nick
- 57:40Nurse style of guard when we think about the Fred Van Fleet a little bit.
- 57:45I think we're going to see an uptick in Maxi's three point attempts.
- 57:47I think we're going to see him grow defensively a ton. I think Nurse
- 57:51is going to kind of put the responsibilities of him as being the guy who
- 57:53picks up ninety six feet once in a while, it picks up full court,
- 57:57does those kind of things, and just getting more of a structured situation.
- 58:00I would like to get him on the ball a little more, regardless
- 58:02if James Harden is here or not. I need some just sets and plays
- 58:07where it's Maxie utilizing his pace, running the offense a little and another thing
- 58:09Nurse talked about in his opening press conference was making Maxie make decisions as a
- 58:15playmaker, getting him downhill and having those reads. That's kind of the question
- 58:19that I think we're going to find out this season is what's the long term
- 58:22future of Tyres Maxie. Is he's a guy who is growing towards being a
- 58:24true point guard? Is he a guy who's just maximized as a scorer.
- 58:28And I think that will dictate a lot of the future direction of the Sixers
- 58:30as far as what they're looking to pair him with. So that's probably the
- 58:34number one thing that I'm looking for, is is he training towards becoming this
- 58:37true point guard or is he kind of locked in as the scoring version himself,
- 58:40which is still a very useful player, but it does dictate the roster
- 58:44construction around him. Something I like that you just talked about was his potential
- 58:47to enhance his defensive talent within himself, and I think that's something that maybe
- 58:53if he is going to be here for the long term, is going to
- 58:57be necessary for this Sixers team. And I think at times that it's been
- 59:00a reoccurring theme on this podcast is that I think you know since defense has
- 59:04gotten lost in the NBA over so many years, there's something to be said
- 59:07for guys who can develop a defensive minded mentality when they are on the court,
- 59:13and I think seeing that from him is going to show us that that
- 59:16development is continuing to happen. It doesn't necessarily need to be him, and
- 59:22while it certainly is welcomed, you know, him shooting enhanced three pointers,
- 59:25you know, of course from beyond the arc. Would absolutely love to see
- 59:29that, But I think you hit it from a defensive perspective. I think
- 59:31that Nick Nurse, if he's able to bring that out in him, that's
- 59:35gonna be really good for this team because they're certainly gonna need it long term.
- 59:37Yeah. Absolutely, And I will give Maxie some credit. I think
- 59:40he's grown as a defender pretty significantly over his time in the NBA. Yeah,
- 59:45taking some huge steps forward. He was almost a lost cause on that
- 59:47end of the floor when he first came in the league, and he's grown
- 59:50to the point where he's at least league average at this point, which we
- 59:52will take. And I think there's more to juice out of it. I
- 59:54really do. I think defense is specifically is a thing where it is effort
- 59:58and energy and just amitting to that side of the ball matters. Now,
- 1:00:00granted, there's gonna be matchups where Maxie size and his lack of height will
- 1:00:05always catch up to him. He's not gonna be a guy picking up everybody
- 1:00:07on an every possession basis. But he has grown a ton and he's a
- 1:00:10guy that I've stopped personally putting a restriction on how good I think he can
- 1:00:15be in any area because he continues to prove everybody wrong. So I'm excited
- 1:00:17to see how he turns out this season. A couple more topics I wanted
- 1:00:20to get into with you, Sean, and this one here is kind of
- 1:00:22I don't know. I looked at it as kind of fun, and I've
- 1:00:24been thinking about it myself too, you know, because we can never actually
- 1:00:29predict what may happen during the course of an off season. You know,
- 1:00:31we don't have a crystal ball. But I was wondering if if there was
- 1:00:35something totally surprising that you could actually see happening that would greatly affect this Sixers
- 1:00:40team from a real positive standpoint, Like, what would that surprising prediction be
- 1:00:46as we're here in this offseason. Yeah, The only thing that kept jumping
- 1:00:51to my mind was some sort of giant Tobias Harris trade, and I think
- 1:00:53for it to be a big deal, it would have to be a Maxi
- 1:00:57and Tobias trade, which would hurt him in the camp up. I would
- 1:01:00rather not trade Maxie. But I do think there's a work where there's a
- 1:01:04world where Daryl Morey thinks I have to take a big swing at this.
- 1:01:07Let me package these two guys and the possible names that I kind of see
- 1:01:09floating around. I do think Paul George is a potential piece. I look
- 1:01:13at the Chicago Bulls quite a bit and I think Adamarda Rosen or Zach Levine.
- 1:01:16I think those guys are bound to be broken up and traded at some
- 1:01:20point if the Sixers try and get in on that mix. Even the Dame
- 1:01:22Lillard conversation seem to keep circling around, So I think the craziness that could
- 1:01:27impact the Sixers seeing in a major way. I will look at from that
- 1:01:30regard some sort of major trade package with that. That's not my thing or
- 1:01:34what I would like them to do. But with Daryl Morey, I'm not
- 1:01:36going to completely roll it out and that's where my mind went with that one.
- 1:01:38Again, Folks talking to Sean Bernard from the Philly Sports Network as well
- 1:01:44and Pickswap Media as well Premiere Podcast Network, providing top tier sports takes in
- 1:01:52a very social media friendly fashion. Love with Sean and Sean's doing out there
- 1:01:58for sure. So let's end with Doc Rivers here, Buddy, let's end
- 1:02:00with Doc Rivers. You mentioned him earlier. He recently talked pretty candidly about
- 1:02:06his tenure in Philly, and more specifically, he talked about how he helped
- 1:02:09to change the culture and growth of the Sixers organization in general. I kind
- 1:02:16of had some feelings about this where I agreed with some of what he said,
- 1:02:20I disagreed with some of what he said. First, I want to
- 1:02:22get your take on him changing the culture for the Philadelphia seventy sixers valid,
- 1:02:29not valid, sort of valid. What are your thoughts shown? Yeah,
- 1:02:31I mean, Doctors is a guy who does not hesitate to think quite highly
- 1:02:36of himself, and we've known that his entire time here. As far as
- 1:02:39the culture stuff, I don't think it's fair to give him too much credit
- 1:02:44for that. I get where he's coming from, and I think there's some
- 1:02:46degree of that. I'm in general, I think the process concerns are very
- 1:02:51overstated, and it's hard to win a championship, it really is. I
- 1:02:53don't think that is the stench of the processes was holding the sixtieth back.
- 1:02:58I don't think that is the deal. I mean, you look at like
- 1:03:00the top picks around the NBA, the guys that end up being a number
- 1:03:04one pick on a team that was a bad team, because that's how you
- 1:03:07get the number one pick. Like you look at like a Chris Paul.
- 1:03:08It's like, you don't argue that the reason that he's never found this ceiling
- 1:03:12is because when he first came to the NBA that he was on a bad
- 1:03:15team or things like that with these players. So I think it's very overstated.
- 1:03:19I get kind of where he's coming from, and I do think it.
- 1:03:21He brought up some good points, and he spoke much more candidly than
- 1:03:23I would expect or frankly think he should have in this situation. But stuff
- 1:03:28like the James Harden comments about getting him to playoff all things like that,
- 1:03:31like he's right about that. I don't think we can give Doc Rivers the
- 1:03:35credit for trying for changing the culture for the better. Frankly, we are
- 1:03:38in the exact same spot as when he came here of still not making past
- 1:03:42the second round. So enough pats on the back for me. But I
- 1:03:45do see where he's coming from in some aspects the same here I do too.
- 1:03:47And look, he was brought in to get them out of the second
- 1:03:51round of the playoffs. That's why he was brought in, and it absolutely
- 1:03:54never happened. And at the end of the day, Doc, I'm sorry,
- 1:03:57no, you didn't change the culture that much to get even this team
- 1:04:01to the Eastern Conference finals. So you know, let's chill out a little
- 1:04:05bit. But I guess to follow up and before I let you go,
- 1:04:09Sean Doc also talked about how Joel Embiad's next step is to make his teammates
- 1:04:15better and how he thinks Jojoe can do that in the future. So what
- 1:04:18are your thoughts on whether or not Joel Embiad has actually been doing this on
- 1:04:21and off the court in terms of making his teammates better and if he can
- 1:04:26get to be that true leader in the future here, what are your thoughts?
- 1:04:30Yeah, I mean for starters, I think the biggest area of Mbiad's
- 1:04:33game that helps teammates offensively is for sure his gravity. We see the doubles
- 1:04:38he commands, the triples he commands at time. The six is more the
- 1:04:41number one three point shooting team in the NBA last season, and a good
- 1:04:44portion that is because of the open three pointers that are created from the gravity
- 1:04:46that Joel demands. Now, I do think he has a point in Joel
- 1:04:49still needs to grow as a passer. But to kind of counter that is,
- 1:04:54I mean, you look at like the Denver Nuggets who went on this,
- 1:04:56and I know the Yo Kitchen Embiad comparisons have gotten too sloppy and it
- 1:05:00happens too often. But yeah, yeah, but like, look at how
- 1:05:03much easier the passes are that Yokis makes. Look at the movement off ball
- 1:05:06from the Nuggets, the way guys are cutting, the way that screens are
- 1:05:10being set. They're opening shots for others that Jess has never happened around him
- 1:05:14beat And that falls right back on the shoulders of Doc Rivers. The play
- 1:05:16call being given to embat at the elbow and everybody else stand around and watch.
- 1:05:20It's difficult for him to find passes out of that. So that is
- 1:05:24one of the things that I'm excited about to see what Nick Nurse does for
- 1:05:27that, because I do think that makes it a major difference. I think
- 1:05:30Embeat is smart enough to grow as a passer when the plays are there to
- 1:05:32be made. And yeah, I mean I think he has a point.
- 1:05:35I think it's something Joell needs to get better at. But I also think
- 1:05:38that that he hasn't been put on the best position for it, and I
- 1:05:41think some changes in the offense and tweaks and how things are run can change
- 1:05:44that pretty drastically. So I'm optimistic that is still to occur. And even
- 1:05:47when like the looking at the trajec trajectory of guys like Yokichen Yannis and Beat
- 1:05:53because of the mistime, I get he's the same age, but he's still
- 1:05:56a little before the curve in that trajectory. And I think there's definitely a
- 1:06:00world where we haven't seen the best version of Dwell and Beat on the basketball
- 1:06:02court yet. It's pretty incredible to think about. We have optimism for sure,
- 1:06:05folks. Again, you can follow Sean on Twitter at Sean Underscore,

- 1:06:26so much for jumping on the PSD podcast show. It was great talking to
- 1:06:29you. Come back join us down the road. We'd love to talk to
- 1:06:30you. Sixers Eagles man. Some Philly Sports would love to have you back
- 1:06:34on buddy. Yeah, absolutely, appreciate appreciate you for having me in anytime.
- 1:06:40Always great talking to Sean. And yes, I do think there is
- 1:06:43a level of optimism and specifically when it comes to what the what the assets
- 1:06:48coming back to the Sixers might be for a potential to Bias Harris trade.
- 1:06:54And look, I don't want to lose Tyrese Maxie at all in that potential
- 1:06:59trade at all. But as Sean was laying out, if we are going
- 1:07:01to get back somebody like a Chris Paul, Damian Lillard like something, or
- 1:07:08some talent that is going to take this team to the next level, then
- 1:07:12it may need to happen. I don't want to lose Tyres faxy at all
- 1:07:15because he is going to continue to develop. I think, I think his
- 1:07:17defensive prowess continuing to develop is something we really do need to keep our eyes
- 1:07:23on in the coming months and even in the coming years as well. So
