- 1:09Speaker 1: have done so.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I ate the whole pack in about five minutes.
- 1:14Speaker 1: But we've got them to give away today, and we'll

- 1:47Speaker 1: Eric Weddle will be inducted into the Ring of Honor.
- 1:50Speaker 1: He is going to join us on the show today.
- 1:52Speaker 1: That's coming up at noon. We have Devin Dampier, who's
- 1:56Speaker 1: going to be hopping on with us for a little
- 1:59Speaker 1: dishing with Dev at 1 o'clock. And we love checking
- 2:04Speaker 1: in with QB number one. It's going to be a
- 2:06Speaker 1: fun day. on the show the nfl oh i also
- 2:11Speaker 1: got a shout out our guy ben lindsey from sumer
- 2:14Speaker 1: sports uh he is the senior content researcher at sumer
- 2:17Speaker 1: sports ben and all of sumer they do really really
- 2:19Speaker 1: great work uh they approach the game from an analytical
- 2:24Speaker 1: standpoint in a way that actually makes sense which is
- 2:28Speaker 1: one of my favorite things about sumer sports so we'll
- 2:31Speaker 1: we'll talk all things football with him You've got Thursday
- 2:35Speaker 1: night football right here on the station tonight. The Rams
- 2:39Speaker 1: and the Niners will be kicking off from Melbourne at 6.30.
- 2:44Speaker 1: That is actually a Netflix game. So I hope your
- 2:47Speaker 1: streaming services are all the way kicked in. And, of course,
- 2:52Speaker 1: you've got a little college football tonight as well. So
- 2:56Speaker 1: we're almost to the weekend. This is the soft launch
- 3:01Speaker 1: to your football weekend. here in Salt Lake City, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: for me today, here in Saratoga Springs. By the way,
- 3:10Speaker 1: I timed it out. I live in the avenues downtown.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Took me 36 minutes to get down here to Southern
- 3:15Speaker 1: Steer today. Now, that's no traffic because of the time
- 3:18Speaker 1: I'm driving, but 1705 Redwood Road, I made it all
- 3:22Speaker 1: the way from the avenues to here in just over.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Half an hour.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So it is definitely worth the trip, especially when you
- 3:30Speaker 1: see the deals that they're running down here at Southern
- 3:33Speaker 1: Steer Butcher. Your official meet partner of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 3:39Speaker 1: NFL returned last night and came in like a lamb, unfortunately.
- 3:45Speaker 1: It was a bit of a whimper of a game.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Not exactly the one that we were hoping for between
- 3:51Speaker 1: the Seahawks and the Patriots.
- 3:53Speaker 2: 10-13 final.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And one thing about the NFL is they are absolutely stink-proof.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is it was a
- 4:04Speaker 1: pretty terrible game to watch, right? Sam Darnold goes out
- 4:08Speaker 1: in the first series. Drew Locke has to play the
- 4:11Speaker 1: rest of the game. Drew Locke is a respectable backup quarterback,
- 4:16Speaker 1: but he is a career backup. He has the second
- 4:19Speaker 1: lowest completion percentage of any active quarterback in the NFL.
- 4:23Speaker 1: He is a guy that you don't want to trust
- 4:26Speaker 1: for anything more than a quarter or two. And we
- 4:29Speaker 1: got him in the first game of the season. for
- 4:32Speaker 1: most of the game.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Now, respect to Drew Locke. He did what he was
- 4:34Speaker 2: supposed to do. He took care of the football. 16-22.
- 4:37Speaker 1: He did throw a touchdown pass, so I should be
- 4:40Speaker 1: kind in my evaluation. Drake May on the other side,
- 4:44Speaker 1: who's supposed to be part of this new crop of
- 4:46Speaker 1: superstar quarterbacks.
- 4:49Speaker 2: 23-33, 178 yards.
- 4:50Speaker 1: That is an abysmal average per completion, 5.4. And he
- 4:54Speaker 1: threw three interceptions, including the game-deciding tried to force it in,
- 4:59Speaker 1: tried to win the game on the goal line, throwing
- 5:03Speaker 1: it down to the goal line, and there was a
- 5:05Speaker 1: wide-open man in front of him, kind of like seemed
- 5:08Speaker 1: like he should have had the right vision window for it. Instead,
- 5:11Speaker 1: he forced it into double coverage through a pick that
- 5:14Speaker 1: allowed the hated Seattle Seahawks to seal a win, 13-10.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And look, when I say the NFL is stink-proof, a
- 5:25Speaker 1: game like this, If it's anything else, right? If the
- 5:28Speaker 1: NBA Christmas Day game is the equivalent of this, if
- 5:33Speaker 1: any kind of like, I don't know, World Series game
- 5:35Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball is this bad, part of the
- 5:38Speaker 1: storyline is, holy cow, what a crap game that was. Yes,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you got a little bit of that coming off the
- 5:45Speaker 1: NFL's kickoff, but mostly it's people now with fodder for
- 5:49Speaker 1: whatever their issues are.
- 5:50Speaker 2: It's people... ready to talk about, uh-oh, Drake May.
- 5:53Speaker 1: This is a problem he's had forever, this is a
- 5:55Speaker 1: problem that's going to continue for the Patriots. The Drew
- 6:00Speaker 1: Locke thing is what it is, but now the Seahawks
- 6:03Speaker 1: are most likely going to be in the market for
- 6:05Speaker 1: some type of quarterback.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Revamp.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Sam Darnold did not break his hip, thank goodness. The
- 6:14Speaker 1: x-rays came back negative, but who knows how long he's
- 6:16Speaker 1: going to be out.
- 6:18Speaker 3: A.J.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Brown, who was one of the biggest off-season acquisitions for
- 6:22Speaker 1: the New England Patriots, one of the big stories of
- 6:25Speaker 1: roster remaking, really, in the whole National Football League, high
- 6:28Speaker 1: ankle sprain, and again, doesn't play anything close to the
- 6:33Speaker 1: full game.
- 6:33Speaker 2: He did finish with.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Three catches for 26 yards, but A.J. Brown was brought
- 6:38Speaker 1: in to be wide receiver number one. He was brought
- 6:40Speaker 1: in to be a threat that Drake may... does not
- 6:43Speaker 1: have outside of him and now a high ankle sprain
- 6:46Speaker 1: which i heard albert breer on the rich eisen show
- 6:50Speaker 1: this morning uh making his case that they should be
- 6:53Speaker 1: called something else high ankle sprains should be called something
- 6:56Speaker 1: else because it it lends us just from a linguistic
- 7:00Speaker 1: perspective to underestimate how serious that injury is a high
- 7:04Speaker 1: ankle sprain is significant ligament damage and we don't treat
- 7:10Speaker 1: it that way because we just think of a sprained
- 7:12Speaker 1: ankle Well, when you sprain your ankle, you just wait
- 7:15Speaker 1: for the swelling to go down, and then you're fine, right?
- 7:17Speaker 1: A high ankle sprain is a lot more intricate and
- 7:20Speaker 1: complicated than that of an injury, so who knows how
- 7:23Speaker 1: long A.J. Brown is potentially going to be out for
- 7:25Speaker 1: the New England Patriots, and who knows how long Drake
- 7:28Speaker 1: May is going to have these same problems as he
- 7:31Speaker 1: cannot seem to protect the football. James Peterson is back
- 7:36Speaker 1: in our Broadway studios producing today. He's a big-time Patriots fan,
- 7:40Speaker 1: so he's lamenting what happened, but 13, 10.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Kind of a stinker of a game, but we're off
- 7:47Speaker 2: and running with the NFL season, James. Yeah.
- 7:49Speaker 4: And to your point about the NFL being stink proof,
- 7:54Speaker 4: maybe it was having to do with how great the
- 7:57Speaker 4: crowd is at Seattle.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Usually I tuned into the radio call.
- 8:03Speaker 4: We have the local Seattle Seahawks broadcast now home of
- 8:06Speaker 4: the Seahawks here for this season. Um, The crowd was great,
- 8:11Speaker 4: like a typical Seahawks crowd is. I hate how they
- 8:16Speaker 4: refer to all of them as the 12s, but whatever.
- 8:19Speaker 4: They were a great crowd. I wonder if that atmosphere
- 8:23Speaker 4: also kind of made it feel more interesting than it was, OC,
- 8:26Speaker 4: because I was into it for most of the game,
- 8:30Speaker 4: even though it was terrible football.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Look, JSN had a beautiful game, and he is one
- 8:36Speaker 1: of the, Star player. He's the type of appointment viewing
- 8:40Speaker 1: that some people want when they tune in.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Eight catches, 122 yards.
- 8:46Speaker 1: By the way, credit to Drew Locke because.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Even as I criticize, not really criticize, I'm just speaking.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Facts about what Drew Locke is as a quarterback, but
- 8:55Speaker 1: credit to Drew Locke for realizing, like, setting himself up
- 8:59Speaker 1: for success in a situation like that. It is a
- 9:03Speaker 1: nightmare scenario for a team when QB1 goes down early
- 9:07Speaker 1: in the first game of the season and you've got
- 9:09Speaker 1: to rely on a guy who, let's be honest, probably
- 9:12Speaker 1: didn't think he was going to be getting reps in
- 9:14Speaker 1: this game. But being a professional, getting out there and realizing, okay,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I have at my disposal one of the best wide
- 9:22Speaker 1: receivers in the league. By some people's metric, the best
- 9:25Speaker 1: wide receiver in the league. I'm going to lean on him, okay?
- 9:28Speaker 2: I'm going to make myself....
- 9:32Speaker 1: The type of person who just says, I'm not the
- 9:37Speaker 1: best guy on the field right now.
- 9:39Speaker 2: He is. Let me put the ball in his hands.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And he did that. And he did it enough that Seattle.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Was able to eke out a win against the same
- 9:49Speaker 1: team that they beat in the Super Bowl, of course.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Now for Seattle, things get a lot more interesting because
- 9:58Speaker 1: you have to figure out the path forward with an
- 10:01Speaker 1: injured Sam Darnold. For the Patriots, you have to figure
- 10:04Speaker 1: out the path forward with an injured A.J.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Brown.
- 10:08Speaker 1: My sincere hope is that injuries, not just for the
- 10:12Speaker 1: NFL season, that injuries for the football season in general
- 10:16Speaker 1: are not a big part of the conversation. It's one
- 10:19Speaker 1: of the things that obviously for Utah football fans you've
- 10:22Speaker 1: had to be sensitive to in recent years. Last year
- 10:25Speaker 1: you were pretty lucky with being a mostly healthy team,
- 10:28Speaker 1: but then you find out after the season that there
- 10:30Speaker 1: were guys dealing with more severe bumps and bruises than
- 10:33Speaker 1: we thought. Your starting quarterback was hampered for a good
- 10:37Speaker 1: portion of the year.
- 10:38Speaker 2: He did miss a start.
- 10:40Speaker 1: We didn't feel the pain of that because Bert Ficklin
- 10:42Speaker 1: as a backup is a He's a quality starter.
- 10:45Speaker 2: He's not just a quality backup. He's a quality starting quarterback.
- 10:49Speaker 1: What you don't want is for injuries to define anything
- 10:54Speaker 1: about Utah's season, your favorite NFL team season. And weirdly enough,
- 10:59Speaker 1: even though it's your rival, I don't want injuries to
- 11:02Speaker 1: define anything about BYU's football season. And already they're starting
- 11:07Speaker 1: to feel some unfortunate kind of things that.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Came out of a Utah Tech game, right? The main
- 11:14Speaker 2: goal in a Utah Tech game is to just escape
- 11:21Speaker 2: without any kind of season-ending injury.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And I think that both of these injuries to important
- 11:27Speaker 1: players for BYU in that Utah Tech game are classified
- 11:31Speaker 1: as less than season-ending, but they're still significant. We'll have
- 11:34Speaker 1: the official injury report coming up later on the show
- 11:38Speaker 1: because it is a conference game. And in the Big 12,
- 11:41Speaker 1: you have to put out injury reports. four conference football games.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So BYU Arizona had to put out their injury report.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Nobody else does so far. Not this week at least.
- 11:56Speaker 1: So the NFL is back. College football is back. You
- 11:59Speaker 1: are having to prioritize your viewership on those two things
- 12:04Speaker 1: as we talked about on the show yesterday. And I
- 12:06Speaker 1: put the poll question up yesterday which you prioritize as.
- 12:11Speaker 2: A football fan.
- 12:12Speaker 1: College football the NFL, or you truly consider both to
- 12:17Speaker 1: be a must-watch. Those Twitter polls run for 24 hours.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And we got a.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's basically 71% of our listeners, to no surprise, prioritize
- 12:28Speaker 1: college football over the NFL. Whether that is truly indicative
- 12:33Speaker 1: of the entire market in Utah, in Salt Lake City,
- 12:38Speaker 1: of the Wasatch Front or not, that is one of
- 12:42Speaker 1: probably the few places that NFL football is.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Not king of the castle.
- 12:48Speaker 1: This is one of the last holdover major media markets,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I would imagine, in America where college football still has
- 12:56Speaker 1: number one billing. There's maybe like, I'd really love to
- 13:00Speaker 1: do a poll like that in Atlanta because obviously they
- 13:04Speaker 1: have the NFL there.
- 13:05Speaker 2: But the Falcons have been hapless and hopeless.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And you got Georgia and Georgia Tech both that are
- 13:09Speaker 1: both pretty relevant right now, especially the University of Georgia,
- 13:13Speaker 1: very relevant right now. they've also got the Braves who
- 13:18Speaker 1: are really good, the Hawks can't seem to figure things out.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I'd love to see what that looks like in Atlanta.
- 13:24Speaker 1: The rest of the southern markets, the rest of the
- 13:27Speaker 1: SEC markets, where college football is of course king, for
- 13:31Speaker 1: the most part are not major television markets or anything
- 13:33Speaker 1: close to major television markets. And maybe I'm stretching a
- 13:36Speaker 1: little bit, calling our little backwoods flyover state a major
- 13:40Speaker 1: television market, but Depending on the metrics you're using, it's
- 13:44Speaker 1: at least top 30. So this might be one of
- 13:48Speaker 1: the final places that college football is still outpacing the
- 13:55Speaker 1: NFL in terms of fan interest, if indeed that extends
- 13:58Speaker 1: all the way through. And by the way, I don't
- 14:01Speaker 1: know if the NFL is number two for most people,
- 14:03Speaker 1: because a lot of the responses we got on.
- 14:05Speaker 2: The show yesterday were about.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Yes, I schedule my week and I schedule my life
- 14:11Speaker 1: around college football and college football viewership and college football attendance.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But also it's NHL hockey and NBA basketball. It's the
- 14:19Speaker 1: jazz and the mammoth now. And, you know, maybe the
- 14:22Speaker 1: NFL is not the king here in Salt Lake City
- 14:26Speaker 1: than it is in all these other markets, which until
- 14:29Speaker 1: today I hadn't really thought about much because you just assume,
- 14:33Speaker 1: all right, yeah, we're a proud American city and American
- 14:36Speaker 1: sports fans are put the NFL number one on the list.
- 14:39Speaker 1: It is the main driver of all things. And it
- 14:44Speaker 1: doesn't have to be true here. Maybe it's not true.
- 14:46Speaker 1: According to the poll, which is, of course, not the
- 14:49Speaker 1: entire population of Salt Lake City, it isn't true. Maybe
- 14:53Speaker 1: it's just because you're listening to a college football-centric show
- 14:57Speaker 1: that you're a college football prioritizer.
- 15:00Speaker 2: 877-353-0700. I'd love to hear from you. So your reactions to.
- 15:06Speaker 1: The NFL kickoff last night, Seattle Seahawks sneak out a win,
- 15:12Speaker 1: eke out a win, 13-10 over the New England Patriots.
- 15:16Speaker 1: And the Drake-May conversation is the reason that the NFL,
- 15:21Speaker 1: even in a game that should kind of lose with
- 15:24Speaker 1: a game like that, but it's why they continue to win.
- 15:28Speaker 1: It's why they continue to be the major media attention
- 15:31Speaker 1: driver in the United States of America because... You've got
- 15:34Speaker 1: a guy now in Drake May who some people, there's
- 15:39Speaker 1: a good contingent of people, call it a 50 or
- 15:42Speaker 1: a 60-40 split, who believe that Drake May is that dude,
- 15:47Speaker 1: is one of these guys that gets his name into
- 15:50Speaker 1: conversation sooner than later with like the Josh Allens and
- 15:53Speaker 1: the Lamar Jacksons of the world.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'm not convinced on Drake May and a performance like
- 15:58Speaker 2: that one.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Last night where he showed some of the ugly sort
- 16:02Speaker 1: of issues of his previous career well, college football and
- 16:07Speaker 1: the first two seasons of his NFL career, that reared
- 16:10Speaker 1: its ugly head again for the Patriots. If you're Mike Rabel,
- 16:14Speaker 1: that's a bigger problem for you than Diana Rossini is. Like,
- 16:18Speaker 1: you can survive all that off-the-field stuff. You cannot survive
- 16:22Speaker 1: Drake May not being the franchise quarterback that.
- 16:25Speaker 2: You need him to be.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And when you flip on the radio this morning here
- 16:30Speaker 1: in Salt Lake City or anywhere else, That is the debate.
- 16:34Speaker 1: That is the question. Is Drake May that guy or
- 16:38Speaker 1: is he not? The Patriots thought they had found a
- 16:40Speaker 1: guy who was going to end up as a top five,
- 16:43Speaker 1: top ten.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Quarterback in the NFL.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And it is prohibitively rare for anybody to overachieve the talent,
- 16:51Speaker 1: the execution ability of their quarterback. We have rare examples
- 16:55Speaker 1: of that existing in the past. Obviously, the 90s Tampa
- 17:00Speaker 1: Bay Buccaneers with Trent Dilfer as their quarterback. Obviously, you
- 17:03Speaker 1: had a couple iterations now of the Baltimore Ravens, the
- 17:07Speaker 1: Joe Flacco Ravens, primarily used as an example here, where, like,
- 17:12Speaker 1: it's not the quarterback that is the driving force behind things.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But the New England Patriots are a perfect example of
- 17:21Speaker 1: the franchise, the ultimate example, probably, of a franchise that
- 17:25Speaker 1: goes as their quarterback goes, right? And there were questions
- 17:29Speaker 1: about whether or not it was a Tom Brady thing
- 17:31Speaker 1: or it was a Bill Belichick thing.
- 17:32Speaker 2: We got the answer to that question.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I think Tom Brady went to Tampa Bay and played
- 17:36Speaker 1: a couple seasons there just to.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Give us the answer to that question, to leave no
- 17:39Speaker 2: doubt that he was the guy.
- 17:44Speaker 1: The Kansas City Chiefs, a lot of people will give
- 17:47Speaker 1: almost as much credit to Andy Reid as they give
- 17:50Speaker 1: to Patrick Mahomes. And Andy Reid has always been respected
- 17:55Speaker 1: and always been considered one of the great coaches in
- 17:57Speaker 1: the NFL game When did he get elevated? When did
- 18:03Speaker 1: he get pushed to a new level, a new echelon
- 18:05Speaker 1: of respect? It's when he got the quarterback. Not just
- 18:09Speaker 1: a good quarterback, but he got a great quarterback in
- 18:13Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes.
- 18:14Speaker 2: And he was able to.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I mean, he had Donovan McNabb for years in Philadelphia.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Wasn't able to quite get over the hump. He had
- 18:21Speaker 1: Alex Smith, who's criminally underrated, in my opinion, as an
- 18:24Speaker 1: NFL quarterback. Not able to quite get over the hump. Almost.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Almost.
- 18:30Speaker 2: So, so close.
- 18:31Speaker 1: And then you get the right quarterback and you become
- 18:34Speaker 1: a borderline dynasty. And it elevates who you are as
- 18:38Speaker 1: a coach. If you're Mike Vrabel, if you're the New
- 18:40Speaker 1: England Patriots, if you're Robert Kraft, they know it better
- 18:43Speaker 1: than anybody does.
- 18:46Speaker 2: That good is the enemy of great. Quarterback play is
- 18:51Speaker 2: perhaps the.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Best example of that phenomenon you will ever see in
- 18:55Speaker 1: your life. Good is the enemy of great. Meaning, If
- 18:59Speaker 1: you have a good quarterback, he's too good to replace.
- 19:03Speaker 1: He's too good to talk about drafting somebody else to develop.
- 19:06Speaker 1: He's too good to bench when things start to go
- 19:09Speaker 1: a little bit awry.
- 19:12Speaker 2: But he's not great.
- 19:13Speaker 1: He's not someone that he's Jimmy Garoppolo with the San
- 19:16Speaker 1: Francisco 49ers where he's going to get you to the party.
- 19:19Speaker 1: But when he's got somebody open in the end zone,
- 19:22Speaker 1: he's going to miss that one throw.
- 19:24Speaker 2: That can make you a Super Bowl champion. He's the
- 19:28Speaker 2: guy that's going to make the one bad decision.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And it's an overreaction to one single game from Drake
- 19:34Speaker 1: May at the beginning of an NFL season. But it
- 19:37Speaker 1: is something that you have to talk about in the
- 19:40Speaker 1: grander scheme of things when it comes to football in general.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Good is the enemy of great with quarterbacks more than
- 19:48Speaker 1: anyone else. It's true with every position, but other positions
- 19:52Speaker 1: it is masked by the people around them. It is
- 19:55Speaker 1: masked by, like, oh, you've got two good linebackers and
- 19:58Speaker 1: one great linebacker. Those two good linebackers are still a
- 20:01Speaker 1: problem in end-of-game scenarios, goal-line scenarios. third and short scenarios
- 20:09Speaker 1: where you need to make a play because they're good enough,
- 20:12Speaker 1: they're going to make a tackle, but if they're great,
- 20:14Speaker 1: they're going to make a tackle before that.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Guy crosses the line to gain.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Right?
- 20:20Speaker 1: If they make the tackle anyway, you're not benching them,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you're not pulling them, you're not saying, all right, we
- 20:24Speaker 1: need to give this freshman a chance. One of the
- 20:27Speaker 1: things that Utah football, we need to pay close, close,
- 20:31Speaker 1: close attention to this season where there are questions that
- 20:34Speaker 1: have to be answered. Where are players good and where
- 20:39Speaker 1: are we finding guys that are actually great? I think
- 20:42Speaker 1: Devin Dampier is flirting with greatness. I think he's a
- 20:46Speaker 1: guy that because of his dynamism, we will potentially talk
- 20:50Speaker 1: about as one of the great quarterbacks to roll through
- 20:52Speaker 1: this university. He's got to get more zip on the
- 20:57Speaker 1: deep balls. We're going to have Devin on the show today,
- 21:00Speaker 1: Dishing with Dev. We're going to talk about the things
- 21:02Speaker 1: that he liked and he didn't like from his first
- 21:04Speaker 1: week's performance. against the University of Idaho, right? Way Sean Parker.
- 21:09Speaker 1: We know he's good. We know that Way Sean is good.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Is he great? We find out as this season progresses.
- 21:19Speaker 1: We might start to get a better indication of that
- 21:21Speaker 1: with Arkansas, because Way Sean, in a lot of cases
- 21:26Speaker 1: last year, didn't have to be great. I think that
- 21:29Speaker 1: somebody had a conversation with him in this offseason. I
- 21:32Speaker 1: think Mark Ottawaya pulled him aside and said, look, I
- 21:35Speaker 1: know you can be great. I think you're almost there.
- 21:38Speaker 1: We know you're good. I need great out of you
- 21:41Speaker 1: instead of good. And especially this year because last year
- 21:45Speaker 1: you had great on your offensive line.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Okay?
- 21:50Speaker 1: I need you to now be the thing in the
- 21:53Speaker 1: run game that is great. And if we get good
- 21:56Speaker 1: out of the offensive line, maybe we get great.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I don't know if we do.
- 22:01Speaker 1: But if we get greatness out of you and goodness
- 22:04Speaker 1: out of them, now we can have a successful running game.
- 22:08Speaker 2: In football, you have to have a mix, obviously.
- 22:10Speaker 1: You can't expect every single position to be great all
- 22:13Speaker 1: the time. You can't expect every individual player to be
- 22:17Speaker 1: a great. There are plenty of years that we have
- 22:21Speaker 1: watched this Utah football team, even really solid Utah football.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Teams, where the.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Overall collection of talent is The whole being greater than
- 22:33Speaker 1: the sum of the parts was why Utah was good.
- 22:36Speaker 1: There have been other years where greatness from an important
- 22:41Speaker 1: position or two propelled what is an otherwise average or
- 22:45Speaker 1: slightly above average or maybe just good roster to great things.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I mean, we're going to look back on some of
- 22:53Speaker 1: those Pac-12 championship years, those two Pac-12 championship years, and
- 22:57Speaker 1: we're going to examine very, very carefully how much Cam
- 23:01Speaker 1: Rising and him being great had to do with them
- 23:05Speaker 1: being successful versus, like, how many great players were there
- 23:09Speaker 1: on those rosters? Sorry, James, I didn't hear what you
- 23:15Speaker 1: were trying to say there. Okay, Darnold, as expected, we'll
- 23:21Speaker 1: miss week two. Not really part of the conversation here,
- 23:25Speaker 1: but good being the enemy of great. Drew Locke, if
- 23:29Speaker 1: you can get to good... There's enough great on that
- 23:33Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks team that maybe the team overall can achieve
- 23:37Speaker 1: things that, well, they hope to because that's a team
- 23:41Speaker 1: that was a Super Bowl champion last year, and they're
- 23:46Speaker 1: spoiled now but not satisfied. We're down here at Southern
- 23:51Speaker 1: Steer Butcher. It is, as I have told you for
- 23:54Speaker 1: weeks and weeks now, It's not a brand-new concept. It's
- 23:59Speaker 1: the friendly neighborhood butcher that your grandparents had, that maybe
- 24:02Speaker 1: your parents had, but with a modern twist on it
- 24:05Speaker 1: and the mastermind of the whole thing. Dan Gunther is
- 24:08Speaker 1: sitting down here with me. First of all, thanks for
- 24:10Speaker 1: having us out here today.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no worries.
- 24:12Speaker 6: It's great to have you.
- 24:13Speaker 7: Whoa.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Sorry, I've got to get the sound. Push that mic
- 24:16Speaker 1: a little closer there. Okay, I'm still not hearing Dan.
- 24:20Speaker 1: We've got to get Dan's headset figured out just a
- 24:22Speaker 1: little bit. But, yeah, we're down here at Southern Steer Butcher.
- 24:26Speaker 1: We've got the sampler combos. We've got the daily rewards program. Thursdays,
- 24:30Speaker 1: it's 20% off the burgers, the sausages, and the hot dogs,
- 24:35Speaker 1: getting you ready for the weekend, the tailgate party, the
- 24:40Speaker 1: football watch party, the barbecue, because there's nothing better than
- 24:45Speaker 1: a nice little late summer barbecue, a couple of cold beverages,
- 24:51Speaker 1: maybe a side or two, but the main event in
- 24:55Speaker 1: all those things.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Is the meats.
- 24:57Speaker 1: All right, let's see if we can get Dan's mic
- 25:00Speaker 1: working here one more time.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Give me a test, test.
- 25:03Speaker 8: All right, test, test.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Nothing yet. Okay, we're going to have to figure that out.
- 25:08Speaker 1: To avoid obnoxious radio and terrible radio here, Dan, you
- 25:14Speaker 1: convey to me, just give me a thumbs up or
- 25:16Speaker 1: thumbs down here, chicken, pork, full line of marinades, the
- 25:22Speaker 1: daily special today I already mentioned, And you've got the
- 25:25Speaker 1: exotic meats as well, as we have talked about.
- 25:29Speaker 2: What kind of.
- 25:30Speaker 1: All right, we're getting one more headset on here. These
- 25:33Speaker 1: family meal options, you and I talked about that the
- 25:36Speaker 1: first time I came down.
- 25:38Speaker 2: The family meal options that, you know, if I'm like a...
- 25:41Speaker 2: I consider myself a barbecue guy.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I like firing up the smoker. I like to be
- 25:45Speaker 1: a little bit of a gourmand when it comes to
- 25:47Speaker 1: the meats. Not everyone is that way. So you've got these...
- 25:52Speaker 1: These family meal options where I can come and I
- 25:54Speaker 1: can pick up everything I need to feed my family
- 25:57Speaker 1: and just walk right back out the door, throw it
- 25:59Speaker 1: in an air fryer or on the grill or whatever.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Dinner is done.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Yeah, take and bake sides. I mean, we have twice-baked potatoes.
- 26:07Speaker 6: You've got stuffed mushrooms, jalapeno poppers. We've got rosemary carrots. Honestly,
- 26:13Speaker 6: you know, think about it. Anything that's taken home. Throw
- 26:18Speaker 6: it in the oven. Like you said, even here when
- 26:20Speaker 6: we're doing free samples, we throw our marinated steak tips
- 26:24Speaker 6: just in the air fryer at 400 for like nine minutes,
- 26:27Speaker 6: and it comes out just awesome, very tender and juicy.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Can we talk about the free samples?
- 26:33Speaker 1: It's a problem for me. My mouth is watering smelling
- 26:35Speaker 1: those things. I went and I made the mistake. I
- 26:38Speaker 1: grabbed a little toothpick. I had both of the free
- 26:41Speaker 1: samples that are out here. But you have, like, this
- 26:43Speaker 1: is what I mean when we're talking about an old
- 26:45Speaker 1: concept with the friendly neighborhood butcher with the modern twist
- 26:49Speaker 1: on it, you've got like this magical machine back there,
- 26:52Speaker 1: the tumbler, the marinator, that really infuses the flavors and
- 26:56Speaker 1: keeps the moisture in those meats.
- 26:58Speaker 6: Yeah, it's kind of a proprietary piece of equipment that
- 27:01Speaker 6: Southern Steer butchers have incorporated. The concept comes from New England, basically.
- 27:08Speaker 6: Anybody who's ever visited the Boston area or grew up
- 27:12Speaker 6: in that area You know, the marinated steak tips is
- 27:15Speaker 6: kind of like the Philly cheesesteak of that area, right?
- 27:18Speaker 6: Where you put the sirloin steak tips in this vacuum
- 27:22Speaker 6: tumbler and it breaks down the muscle fiber and tenderizes
- 27:25Speaker 6: the meat. And the vacuum pressure forces that marinade flavor
- 27:29Speaker 6: and juices all the way throughout the piece of meat.
- 27:32Speaker 6: And you can't overcook it. You can't cook it dry.
- 27:36Speaker 6: It's always going to be tender. Back East, they put
- 27:39Speaker 6: it on a hoagie roll with, you know, mushrooms and
- 27:41Speaker 6: peppers and you know, onions and make a sandwich out
- 27:44Speaker 6: of it. But here, you know, people just take it home,
- 27:47Speaker 6: you know, throw it in the air fryer, throw it
- 27:49Speaker 6: on the grill, and it's just terrific.
- 27:52Speaker 2: When you say meat in the air fryer, I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 27:55Speaker 2: what are we doing? Meat in the air fryer? No,
- 27:56Speaker 2: that's blasphemy. You've got to put that bad boy on
- 27:59Speaker 2: the grill. But it comes out perfectly.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I'm telling you, come down here to 1705 North Redwood
- 28:04Speaker 1: Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Try the steak tips.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Try everything they recommend because so far you've not led
- 28:10Speaker 1: us wrong.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Yeah, it's been an awesome opportunity here to serve in
- 28:16Speaker 6: this community. Southern Steer also believes in giving back to
- 28:20Speaker 6: the community. So there's a lot of times where we'll
- 28:22Speaker 6: take some of our steak and some of our marinated
- 28:26Speaker 6: meats and we'll take it to first responders like fire
- 28:28Speaker 6: stations and senior living centers and so forth. So Project 52,
- 28:34Speaker 6: once a week every year, we try to get involved
- 28:37Speaker 6: in the community and give back.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Last thing.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Because we've got to get to an interview here in
- 28:42Speaker 1: just a second. But, you know, families out here now,
- 28:47Speaker 1: you read so much stuff about the food supply chain
- 28:51Speaker 1: and the hormones and the crazy stuff that's being put
- 28:53Speaker 1: into your meats. You're getting this meat from the cleanest
- 28:57Speaker 1: sources possible, from the artisanal sort of, you know, family-friendly
- 29:04Speaker 1: type farmers. Southern Steer really pays close attention to their sourcing.
- 29:08Speaker 6: Yeah, it's the whole reason for the concept, honestly, because
- 29:11Speaker 6: you don't know what you're getting when you go to
- 29:13Speaker 6: the grocery store. You don't know what you get when
- 29:16Speaker 6: you just walk in and buy a shrink-wrapped piece of meat.
- 29:19Speaker 6: Even today, the government's announced that they're importing meat from
- 29:22Speaker 6: Argentina and Chile and Mexico, wherever. All of our cattle
- 29:26Speaker 6: is raised here in very specific cattle ranches where it's
- 29:31Speaker 6: sustainably raised. It's grass-fed all the way up until the
- 29:35Speaker 6: week before it goes to the processing facility, and it's
- 29:39Speaker 6: all USDA pure black Angus prime beef.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Come to Southern Steer.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Elevate the meat that you're putting on the grill, that
- 29:47Speaker 1: you're putting in the air fryer, that you're putting, more importantly,
- 29:50Speaker 1: in your body and in the body of your family
- 29:52Speaker 1: members and your loved ones. It is high-quality, artisanal, humanely
- 29:57Speaker 1: raised meat, They are paying close attention to where it
- 30:00Speaker 1: comes from so you don't have to worry about that.
- 30:03Speaker 1: 1705 North Redwood Road, Saratoga Springs. We're going to be
- 30:05Speaker 1: down here throughout the show. And, of course, they're always open.
- 30:09Speaker 1: They're always ready to supply your tailgate party, your family barbecue,
- 30:12Speaker 1: anything like that.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Right, Dan?
- 30:14Speaker 6: Yeah, come on down and get some free samples. Pick
- 30:16Speaker 6: up some jalapeno poppers for the weekend. They're really popular today.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Those armadillo eggs over there?
- 30:21Speaker 6: Yeah, we could talk about that. That's amazing.
- 30:23Speaker 2: We'll talk about that when Dan sits down with us
- 30:26Speaker 2: next time.
- 30:26Speaker 1: That will be coming up in about a minute. Half
- 30:28Speaker 1: an hour. Glad to be here at Southern Steer. Glad
- 30:31Speaker 1: to have them part of the show here on ESPN 700. 92.1 FM,
- 30:35Speaker 1: we talk Sumer sports and the NFL kickoff next on
- 30:39Speaker 1: Utah's number one sports talk.
- 30:41Speaker 9: Born in the U.S.A.
- 30:44Speaker 2: I was born in the U.S.A.
- 30:47Speaker 8: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 30:50Speaker 8: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show, coming at you
- 31:00Speaker 1: live from Southern Steer Butcher, 1705 North Redwood Road in
- 31:05Speaker 1: Saratoga Springs. Thursdays down here, you get 20% off hot dogs, sausages, burgers,
- 31:14Speaker 1: everything for your neighborhood barbecue, your tailgate party, as we
- 31:18Speaker 1: march closer towards a kickoff between the University of Utah
- 31:21Speaker 1: and Arkansas. But we're talking a little NFL today. at
- 31:27Speaker 1: least here in hour number one. NFL games kicked off
- 31:31Speaker 1: last night, officially in the regular season, with kind of
- 31:33Speaker 1: a stinker, if we're being honest, between the Patriots and
- 31:36Speaker 1: the Seahawks. Thursday night football preview here on the Sean
- 31:40Speaker 1: O'Connell Show as we get ready for the one that
- 31:43Speaker 1: everyone really cares about, the Melbourne-Australia game between my San
- 31:47Speaker 1: Francisco 49ers and the Super Bowl favorite, L.A.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Rams.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Ben Lindsey from Sumer Sports is kind enough to join
- 31:56Speaker 1: us here to talk about what we saw last night,
- 31:57Speaker 1: what we should expect from tonight, and all things NFL.
- 32:01Speaker 1: He is the senior content researcher at Sumer Sports, at
- 32:04Speaker 1: BenLindsey underscore on Twitter, if you're not already following.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Ben, welcome to the show. How are you? I'm doing well.
- 32:11Speaker 10: Can't complain. Had NFL football last night. Had some more tonight.
- 32:15Speaker 10: Full slate this weekend, so I'm good.
- 32:19Speaker 1: So back to busy season for all of you folks
- 32:21Speaker 1: at Sumer Sports. And one thing I really truly appreciate
- 32:24Speaker 1: is the analytical approach from Sumer Sports. But it seems
- 32:28Speaker 1: like you, better than anyone, translates those numbers into, like,
- 32:32Speaker 1: practical football information, practical layman's terms that we could all understand.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And with that in mind, Drake May last night was
- 32:43Speaker 1: not the Drake May that the Patriots needed him to
- 32:46Speaker 1: be if they want to make a return. to the
- 32:48Speaker 1: super bowl which numbers really jumped out for you besides
- 32:51Speaker 1: the three turnovers of course on what made drake mays
- 32:54Speaker 1: night so disastrous.
- 32:57Speaker 10: Yeah the the big one that jumped out especially through
- 33:00Speaker 10: the first three quarters was his average time to throw
- 33:04Speaker 10: so how long it takes from when the ball snapped
- 33:07Speaker 10: to when he gets rid of the ball was 2.5
- 33:09Speaker 10: seconds which was the same as his average depth of
- 33:11Speaker 10: target which is basically just how far downfield the ball
- 33:14Speaker 10: is going on average So their game plan coming in
- 33:17Speaker 10: early was we saw what happened in the Super Bowl,
- 33:20Speaker 10: the Seahawks' pass rush, got them on the ground a ton,
- 33:24Speaker 10: forced them to make bad plays under pressure.
- 33:25Speaker 9: And the Patriots came in and were like.
- 33:27Speaker 10: That's not going to happen again. We're going to get
- 33:29Speaker 10: the ball out. It's going to be a lot of
- 33:30Speaker 10: quick swing passes underneath, passes close to the line of scrimmage.
- 33:34Speaker 10: And through three quarters, that was working okay, right? But
- 33:37Speaker 10: they weren't really getting any explosive plays. And then when
- 33:39Speaker 10: you saw at the end of the game, When he
- 33:42Speaker 10: did try to force the ball downfield, throw it 15-plus
- 33:44Speaker 10: yards downfield, that's when those mistakes came. And that's really
- 33:48Speaker 10: what Seattle tries to do. They try to make you
- 33:51Speaker 10: drive the ball down the field methodically. They do a
- 33:53Speaker 10: really good job, since Mike McDonald's gone there, of taking
- 33:56Speaker 10: away those big plays. And that was really the story
- 33:59Speaker 10: for the Patriots a lot of last year, was Drake
- 34:01Speaker 10: May was awesome pushing the ball downfield. One of the
- 34:03Speaker 10: most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL wasn't able to do
- 34:06Speaker 10: that against Seattle. And ended up making mistakes when he
- 34:10Speaker 10: did try to push the ball downfield.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I can't say that I fault the game plan of
- 34:16Speaker 1: trying to make those short throws turn into big yardage
- 34:20Speaker 1: if A.J. Brown is available, because I'm looking at your
- 34:23Speaker 1: Twitter right now, and they mentioned it on the broadcast
- 34:27Speaker 1: as well, but A.J. Brown does more than anyone in
- 34:30Speaker 1: the NFL when it comes to receiving yards off of
- 34:33Speaker 1: slant routes. And as you referenced in your tweet, it's
- 34:36Speaker 1: not particularly close. This is a guy who turns a
- 34:38Speaker 1: short throw into a big play. Obviously, he was a
- 34:42Speaker 1: big offseason acquisition for the Patriots. But does that game
- 34:46Speaker 1: plan then go out the window if you have a
- 34:48Speaker 1: compromised or an absent A.J.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Brown?
- 34:51Speaker 1: Was that a big problem for them and maybe the
- 34:53Speaker 1: reason why things went awry?
- 34:56Speaker 10: I think so. And they have some other players like
- 34:59Speaker 10: Pop Douglas in the slot as a guy who can
- 35:01Speaker 10: create after the catch a little bit. But really when
- 35:04Speaker 10: the Patriots, you come out of this offseason and there's
- 35:06Speaker 10: talk about they had a light schedule. They're probably going
- 35:09Speaker 10: to regress a little bit this year. But at the
- 35:11Speaker 10: same time, their receiving core on paper looked a lot
- 35:14Speaker 10: better coming into this year. Bringing in A.J. Brown, who,
- 35:17Speaker 10: like you mentioned, can create after the catch, can also
- 35:19Speaker 10: win downfields. and honestly should have had a pretty easy
- 35:23Speaker 10: touchdown on the DPI, that guy called, that May underthrew.
- 35:27Speaker 10: You bring in Romeo Dobbs, who was a consistent receiver
- 35:30Speaker 10: for Green Bay. He has a massive drop in the game.
- 35:33Speaker 10: So that was one of the more disappointing things in
- 35:35Speaker 10: that game is those acquisitions at wide receiver that were
- 35:38Speaker 10: supposed to improve the room. Brown gets hurt. Dobbs doesn't
- 35:42Speaker 10: have a great game. Really underperform. And like you mentioned,
- 35:45Speaker 10: that game plan, it's harder to execute, right, if you
- 35:48Speaker 10: don't have these receivers that you're getting the ball out two,
- 35:51Speaker 10: three yards past the line of scrimmage, and they're not
- 35:53Speaker 10: able to break tackles, turn those into bigger games.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Seattle was dealing with their own problems, obviously. Sam Darnold
- 36:02Speaker 1: goes down early in this game, and Drew Locke, from
- 36:05Speaker 1: a numbers perspective, has not traditionally been all that fantastic.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I can't imagine that he pictured any scenario in which
- 36:13Speaker 1: he was going to be playing this much of the
- 36:15Speaker 1: first game of the season, but he did enough to
- 36:17Speaker 1: get the job done. and he leaned on Jackson Smith
- 36:20Speaker 1: and Jigba in order to do so. What did the
- 36:23Speaker 1: numbers say about Drew Locke's performance?
- 36:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought he was solid.
- 36:28Speaker 10: And like you mentioned, it was a lot of Jackson
- 36:30Speaker 10: Smith and Jigba. That was basically their passing offense in 2025.
- 36:34Speaker 10: He led the NFL with a 36% target share. Last
- 36:38Speaker 10: night he had a 46% target share. So the ball
- 36:40Speaker 10: almost half the time is going to Jackson Smith and Jigba.
- 36:43Speaker 10: But I think what Seattle does well is they move
- 36:45Speaker 10: him around offensively. the formation a good amount. They get
- 36:48Speaker 10: him outside, they get him in the slot. You saw
- 36:50Speaker 10: a few plays in the game yesterday where he's coming
- 36:52Speaker 10: out of the backfield to try to get him favorable matchups.
- 36:57Speaker 9: So Locke executed.
- 36:58Speaker 10: And I also think that Seattle did a pretty good
- 37:01Speaker 10: job on outside zone runs specifically, with Judarian Price coming
- 37:05Speaker 10: in to replace Kenneth Walker. Stat line wasn't super impressive,
- 37:11Speaker 10: but I thought the tape looked pretty good on him.
- 37:14Speaker 10: And them being able to lean on the run game,
- 37:16Speaker 10: not ask Drew Locke to do anything crazy. And then
- 37:19Speaker 10: obviously with that defense, you don't have to be super
- 37:22Speaker 10: explosive offensively in a lot of games. And I thought
- 37:25Speaker 10: Locke handled what they asked him to do.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Ben Lindsay is our guest here talking NFL football. Ben
- 37:31Speaker 1: is the senior content researcher at Sumer Sports who does great,
- 37:35Speaker 1: great work on examining the game of football from an
- 37:39Speaker 1: analytics perspective and then translating those numbers into to Laban's
- 37:43Speaker 1: terms for all of us out here who are trying
- 37:45Speaker 1: to figure out the intricacies of football. Thursday night game
- 37:50Speaker 1: and one of the big storylines so far as we
- 37:53Speaker 1: get closer to Rams-Niners is the difference in travel schedules.
- 37:58Speaker 1: The Niners have been in Australia for a week plus.
- 38:00Speaker 1: The Rams flew out yesterday and they're going to be
- 38:04Speaker 1: there on the ground for like 36 hours or whatever
- 38:08Speaker 1: the total is going to end up being in Australia.
- 38:10Speaker 1: And the difference of approaches is going to be, I think,
- 38:12Speaker 1: examined very carefully by all these teams that are asked
- 38:16Speaker 1: to fly and play international games as we move forward.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Do we have an analytical perspective yet on which is
- 38:24Speaker 1: the better chance or which is the better idea for
- 38:26Speaker 1: a team to maximize their success?
- 38:31Speaker 10: I can't say I do. I'm not a sleep jet
- 38:34Speaker 10: lag expert, but it's certainly an interesting thing to talk about, right,
- 38:39Speaker 10: with the two different approaches. The sample size is going
- 38:41Speaker 10: to be one, and there's a lot of other factors.
- 38:44Speaker 10: But it is something that coming out of this game,
- 38:48Speaker 10: even like beyond just the result of this game, how
- 38:50Speaker 10: it impacts week two with the 49ers trying to get readjusted,
- 38:55Speaker 10: maybe the Rams. have less readjustment to do coming back.
- 38:59Speaker 10: There's definitely a lot of interesting angles from that perspective.
- 39:03Speaker 10: But I don't know if there's an analytical lean for
- 39:05Speaker 10: me on that.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I'm a Niners guy, and so this is a game
- 39:09Speaker 1: I was circling from the very beginning of the offseason.
- 39:12Speaker 1: And then, of course, you get the news that Aaron
- 39:15Speaker 1: Donald's coming out of retirement and he's going to be
- 39:18Speaker 1: part of this team alongside Myles Garrett. And then, oh wait,
- 39:22Speaker 1: Aaron Donald is not going to be In Australia, when
- 39:26Speaker 1: you remove an Aaron Donald, even an Aaron Donald that
- 39:28Speaker 1: is two years out of the game.
- 39:30Speaker 2: The NFL and just coming off retirement, when you.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Remove him from a game, what does that usually do
- 39:36Speaker 1: for an opposing offense?
- 39:38Speaker 10: It helps. It's not necessarily something where I guess the
- 39:43Speaker 10: Rams were expecting to have Aaron Donald all season. But
- 39:46Speaker 10: it's a lot to deal with, as many people have
- 39:48Speaker 10: talked about, especially if you're throwing Aaron Donald and Myles
- 39:52Speaker 10: Garrett on the same side.
- 39:53Speaker 9: Of the line of scrimmage.
- 39:55Speaker 10: And to go along with the other talented pass rushers
- 39:59Speaker 10: that the Rams already have on their roster and Kobe
- 40:01Speaker 10: Turner and Byron Young is a situation where Myles Garrett
- 40:06Speaker 10: is a guy throughout his career at Cleveland that he's
- 40:08Speaker 10: getting the extra attention from opposing offensive lines, getting double teams,
- 40:12Speaker 10: getting chips. That's probably still going to be the case,
- 40:17Speaker 10: but it's a lot harder to do that against this
- 40:18Speaker 10: Rams defensive front with all the options they have. And
- 40:22Speaker 10: he's probably, the other guys.
- 40:24Speaker 11: Are going to get more one-on-ones.
- 40:27Speaker 10: And just removing Aaron Donald from that sort of helps
- 40:31Speaker 10: the 49ers case, allow them to put more attention to
- 40:34Speaker 10: guys like Myles Garrett and Kobe Turner.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Are you a big believer in the Rams?
- 40:40Speaker 1: They are the odds-on Super Bowl favorite in most books,
- 40:43Speaker 1: and obviously the headlining names give you reason to believe
- 40:48Speaker 1: that they should, if healthy, be able to handle a
- 40:50Speaker 1: lot of challenges that they might face this year. Personally,
- 40:55Speaker 1: are you as high on the Rams as other people are?
- 40:58Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, I think they should be the Super
- 41:00Speaker 10: Bowl favorites. It's difficult to kind of look at them,
- 41:05Speaker 10: whatever their odds are, plus 500, plus 600, and being
- 41:08Speaker 10: that heavy of favorites, it's hard to go into any
- 41:13Speaker 10: football season with any team and just be like, they're
- 41:16Speaker 10: going to win the Super Bowl. And actually, their offense,
- 41:19Speaker 10: there is some more fragility than there is with a
- 41:23Speaker 10: lot of teams, just given Stafford's age. given some of
- 41:27Speaker 10: the questions they have at tackle. Devontae Adams has had
- 41:30Speaker 10: a history of lower body injuries. If Stafford or Adams
- 41:33Speaker 10: or one of these core pieces on offense goes down,
- 41:37Speaker 10: you can say that for every team, but I think
- 41:39Speaker 10: it's probably more likely for the Rams. Then that's a
- 41:43Speaker 10: cause for concern. But if you just look at their
- 41:44Speaker 10: roster on paper, the defense was strong until they got
- 41:47Speaker 10: into the playoffs last year, and a lot of their
- 41:50Speaker 10: issues were at corner. And they go out and address that,
- 41:52Speaker 10: trading for Trent McDuffie, bringing in Jalen Watson from the Chiefs.
- 41:56Speaker 10: not to mention the defensive line additions. I think it's
- 41:58Speaker 10: hard to see a scenario where their defense isn't really good,
- 42:01Speaker 10: and their offense was one of the most efficient offenses
- 42:04Speaker 10: we've seen in recent years, particularly in the run game.
- 42:07Speaker 10: Super successful running the ball. Then they were able to
- 42:10Speaker 10: hit explosives out of heavier personnel in the pass game.
- 42:14Speaker 10: So I think they should be the favorites. It's just
- 42:16Speaker 10: tough to say. This team is definitely going to win
- 42:19Speaker 10: the Super Bowl going into the year.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Besides the Rams, who are you watching– closest who has
- 42:25Speaker 1: your attention most whether it's because of the numbers or
- 42:28Speaker 1: anything else who are you keeping an eye on this
- 42:31Speaker 1: upcoming NFL season that just kicked off last.
- 42:33Speaker 10: Night I think in the AFC it's it's the bills
- 42:38Speaker 10: have kind of gone under discussed um with a lot
- 42:42Speaker 10: of these teams they've been a top four or five
- 42:46Speaker 10: offense in the league basically since Josh Allen kind of
- 42:49Speaker 10: ascended around 2018. They have a good offensive line. They
- 42:55Speaker 10: have a good running game. Allen's one of the better
- 42:57Speaker 10: quarterbacks in the league. Their big issue last season, particularly
- 43:00Speaker 10: against defenses that wanted to play man coverage against them,
- 43:04Speaker 10: was they just didn't have the receivers to consistently beat
- 43:07Speaker 10: man coverage. One of their better options was Dalton Kincaid
- 43:11Speaker 10: who missed the a lot of time last year with injury.
- 43:13Speaker 10: They go out and bring in DJ Moore, and DJ
- 43:16Speaker 10: Moore isn't an elite alpha wide receiver, but he is
- 43:20Speaker 10: better than the options they had last year on the
- 43:24Speaker 10: outside as a guy who can beat man coverage. And
- 43:27Speaker 10: then Jim Leonard coming in as defensive coordinator. I think
- 43:30Speaker 10: there's a chance that with some of the stuff he
- 43:31Speaker 10: can do up front from a pressure, a stunting perspective,
- 43:37Speaker 10: can give a little bit more life to their defense.
- 43:38Speaker 10: So I think on the AFC, the Bills are interesting.
- 43:41Speaker 10: And the other team in the NFC is the Lions.
- 43:46Speaker 10: And they have injury question marks on defense. But I
- 43:49Speaker 10: think the Lions are a team, really favorable schedule. A
- 43:53Speaker 10: lot of their games are indoor, good weather, which is
- 43:56Speaker 10: good for Jared Goff, who's struggled outside in cold weather
- 44:00Speaker 10: to potentially get a high seed. And they just have
- 44:03Speaker 10: one of the offenses in the league I'm most comfortable
- 44:06Speaker 10: in with their skill position group.
- 44:08Speaker 2: Some of the.
- 44:08Speaker 10: Continuity they have with golf and those guys together. And
- 44:13Speaker 10: then defensively, Kirby Joseph, Brian Branch, big injuries. But you
- 44:17Speaker 10: do get a Lee McNeil back on the defensive line.
- 44:20Speaker 10: It sounds like Joseph and Branch will come back some
- 44:23Speaker 10: point early to midseason. And that's a team that could
- 44:27Speaker 10: get some momentum going in late.
- 44:28Speaker 5: In the year.
- 44:30Speaker 1: We started the show today talking about, I was ranting
- 44:33Speaker 1: about how, you know, with quarterback play in particular, good
- 44:37Speaker 1: is the enemy of great. When you have a good
- 44:39Speaker 1: quarterback that can't quite get you over the hump, but
- 44:41Speaker 1: he's not bad enough that you're ready to move on
- 44:43Speaker 1: from him or whatever else, that can be the nightmare scenario,
- 44:46Speaker 1: in my opinion, for some NFL teams.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Where is that line, though?
- 44:49Speaker 1: Where is the Mason Dixon line of, you know, this
- 44:53Speaker 1: guy can win you a Super Bowl? Do you need
- 44:54Speaker 1: a top five quarterback player? Do you need a top
- 44:58Speaker 1: ten quarterback from a numbers perspective or otherwise? What is
- 45:02Speaker 1: the difference between good and great when we're talking about
- 45:05Speaker 1: NFL quarterbacks specifically?
- 45:09Speaker 10: I think we've seen that line shift a little bit
- 45:11Speaker 10: the last couple of years. With Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia,
- 45:16Speaker 10: with Sam Darnold in Seattle last year, I think if
- 45:19Speaker 10: you have even a top half of the league quarterback,
- 45:25Speaker 10: You might not be in the conversation every year like
- 45:28Speaker 10: you are with a top-five quarterback, but with a strong
- 45:32Speaker 10: supporting cast, strong play calling, a great defense like we
- 45:37Speaker 10: saw on those Eagles teams, the Seahawks team last year,
- 45:41Speaker 10: you can win a Super Bowl with a quarterback who's
- 45:44Speaker 10: in the 10 to 16 range consistently. It puts more
- 45:50Speaker 10: pressure on your roster building around them to have elite
- 45:54Speaker 10: talent in other places and keep it under the salary
- 45:58Speaker 10: cap than it does if you have a Josh Allen,
- 46:02Speaker 10: Patrick Mahomes type of quarterback.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Ben, appreciate your time and your perspective. Appreciate all you
- 46:09Speaker 1: guys do over at Sumer Sports. It's become one of
- 46:11Speaker 1: our favorite resources here. So thanks for joining us today.
- 46:15Speaker 10: Appreciate it.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Ben Lindsey, at Ben, L-I-N-S-E-Y underscore. Ben Lindsey, senior content
- 46:25Speaker 1: researcher over there at Sumer Sports. And whether it's for fantasy,
- 46:30Speaker 1: whether it's for gambling purposes, or just entertainment and information,
- 46:35Speaker 1: you really should be leaning on Sumer Sports a little bit.
- 46:37Speaker 1: They pick the game apart from a numbers perspective and
- 46:40Speaker 1: then tell you what those numbers should mean on game day.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Really, really great stuff from Ben.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Thursday night football preview here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 46:49Speaker 1: We'll have those for Sunday previews, obviously, NFL slate. We'll
- 46:53Speaker 1: have them for Monday night football as we take a
- 46:56Speaker 1: look at the pro football world. Niners, Rams tonight in Melbourne, 6.30
- 47:02Speaker 1: kickoff on Netflix. We're down here at Southern Steer Butcher,
- 47:07Speaker 1: 1705 North Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 47:11Speaker 2: It's the neighborhood butcher with the modern twist.
- 47:14Speaker 1: And part of that modern twist is incredible technology that
- 47:18Speaker 1: is infusing your meats with moisture, flavor, and tenderness. Come
- 47:26Speaker 1: down and see us today. Free samples are out. It's
- 47:28Speaker 1: the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 47:40Speaker 8: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 47:43Speaker 8: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 47:45Speaker 12: Sean O'Connell Show coming at you live today from Southern
- 47:53Speaker 12: Steer Butchers, 1705 North Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 47:58Speaker 2: A modern day butchery.
- 48:00Speaker 1: It's like the mom and pop shop that your grandparents
- 48:02Speaker 1: used to go to to get their meats. like maybe
- 48:05Speaker 1: mom and dad used to, but with a modern twist.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Quality meats, chicken, pork, ethically sourced, humanely raised, artisanal stuff
- 48:14Speaker 1: down here. And the brains behind the operation, Dan Gunther,
- 48:18Speaker 1: is kind enough to sit down with us one more time.
- 48:20Speaker 1: This place is bumping here on a Thursday afternoon.
- 48:23Speaker 6: Yeah, everybody's gearing up for tailgate and weekend barbecues, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 6: kind of finish out the summer, diving into football season.
- 48:32Speaker 6: So it gets busy.
- 48:34Speaker 1: How does the traffic flow go? Is it like Thursdays
- 48:37Speaker 1: and Fridays you're a little bit busier? People gear up
- 48:40Speaker 1: on Saturday for the big Sunday dinner, the family dinner.
- 48:43Speaker 2: When is the busiest time down here?
- 48:45Speaker 6: Yeah, Friday afternoons it really gets very busy. Saturday morning
- 48:49Speaker 6: is really busy. Saturday is usually busy all throughout the
- 48:52Speaker 6: entire day. Believe it or not, Sundays is one of
- 48:55Speaker 6: our busiest days too. When we first opened up about
- 49:00Speaker 6: six weeks ago, we were concerned that Sundays would be
- 49:02Speaker 6: a little slower.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Sure.
- 49:04Speaker 6: Especially here in Utah County, right? But no, it's been great.
- 49:07Speaker 6: People come in, you know, they're buying their briskets late
- 49:11Speaker 6: Saturday afternoon so that they have something for Sunday family dinner.
- 49:16Speaker 6: Sundays is a great day now that football season started.
- 49:19Speaker 1: That's right. Football season is back. Niners versus Rams on
- 49:24Speaker 1: Netflix tonight. A full slate this weekend. Obviously, college football
- 49:28Speaker 1: back as well. Dan, you see me, I'm turned toward
- 49:32Speaker 1: the front door because if I look back at that
- 49:35Speaker 1: butcher case and I see all of those mouth-watering meats,
- 49:38Speaker 1: my mouth literally waters, especially I got my eye on
- 49:41Speaker 1: the dino ribs and the armadillo eggs. I'm leaving today
- 49:45Speaker 1: with some of that stuff in my backpack.
- 49:47Speaker 10: Of course.
- 49:48Speaker 6: Yeah, no worries. We'll hook you up for sure, O.C.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Tell people what the armadillo eggs are.
- 49:53Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a really cool concept. Basically, it's a jalapeno popper.
- 49:57Speaker 6: So the whole jalapeno stuffed with cream cheese wrapped in
- 50:01Speaker 6: like an egg-shaped sausage and then surrounded by bacon.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 50:06Speaker 6: You throw that in the smoker. Oh, my gosh. You
- 50:09Speaker 6: put it at about 400 degrees for about 12 minutes
- 50:13Speaker 6: and crisp up that bacon. And when you cut into
- 50:17Speaker 6: it and the cream cheese oozes out and the jalapeno, oh, boy,
- 50:21Speaker 6: it's It's amazing stuff.
- 50:22Speaker 2: This is a family show.
- 50:24Speaker 1: That's getting borderline dirty with how good that stuff sounds. Also,
- 50:28Speaker 1: if you're looking for a little surf and turf, I
- 50:30Speaker 1: realized over here in the coolers behind me, you've got
- 50:33Speaker 1: some seafood, too.
- 50:34Speaker 2: We do.
- 50:34Speaker 6: Yeah, we do have lobster, salmon, cod. You talked about
- 50:39Speaker 6: exotics earlier. You can come in and get wild boar.
- 50:42Speaker 6: You can get your bison and venison. We don't have
- 50:48Speaker 6: it fresh because it doesn't sell fresh. frequently but you
- 50:52Speaker 6: know if you're looking for something a little different you
- 50:54Speaker 6: got a recipe you want to try something new then
- 50:57Speaker 6: we'll have it.
- 50:58Speaker 1: And you will dry age steaks for people also right
- 51:00Speaker 1: if i come in and i buy some cuts and
- 51:03Speaker 1: i'm like i want to come back and get these
- 51:04Speaker 1: after you dry age them a little bit you got
- 51:06Speaker 1: the locker right here.
- 51:07Speaker 6: Yeah exactly it's it's basically just for that right people
- 51:10Speaker 6: who haven't really tried dry aged meats you'd be amazed
- 51:13Speaker 6: i kind of the way i describe it it's like
- 51:16Speaker 6: You know, going from watching black and white TV from
- 51:19Speaker 6: when I was a kid to then all of a
- 51:21Speaker 6: sudden you get this color TV. It's like, whoa, the
- 51:24Speaker 6: flavor of your meat after it's been dry aged is
- 51:28Speaker 6: is accentuated. And so, yeah, come in and, you know,
- 51:31Speaker 6: get a bone in ribeye roast and, you know, we'll
- 51:34Speaker 6: tag it with your name and we'll put it in
- 51:36Speaker 6: the dry ager for 28, 30 days and. You know,
- 51:40Speaker 6: it'll be amazing.
- 51:41Speaker 1: When you go to these, like, five-star steak restaurants downtown
- 51:45Speaker 1: or down in Vegas or whatever, that's what they're feeding you,
- 51:48Speaker 1: and obviously they're charging you the premium for it. You
- 51:50Speaker 1: could do that at home now because of what Southern
- 51:52Speaker 1: Steer offers.
- 51:52Speaker 6: That's exactly right. Yeah, you know, as a matter of fact,
- 51:55Speaker 6: a lot of our meat comes from a particular source
- 51:59Speaker 6: that typically has only provided their beef cattle to high-end
- 52:04Speaker 6: restaurants like a Christopher's or a Morton's. and they haven't
- 52:09Speaker 6: actually made it available to the public because these high-end
- 52:12Speaker 6: restaurants are kind of monopolizing that. But you now can
- 52:16Speaker 6: come into Southern Steer and get the same cut of
- 52:19Speaker 6: beef that you would be served at the restaurant and
- 52:21Speaker 6: take it home and cook it the way you want
- 52:23Speaker 6: it for half the price.
- 52:25Speaker 2: If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.
- 52:27Speaker 1: I'm doing my best here, but if you're not mouth-watering
- 52:30Speaker 1: here and all this stuff, you just don't love food
- 52:32Speaker 1: the way I do. Come down to 1705 North Redwood
- 52:35Speaker 1: Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Talk to Dan. Talk to Aubrey. Talk to the crew.
- 52:39Speaker 2: They will hook you up.
- 52:40Speaker 1: They will get you situated for your weekend barbecue, your
- 52:43Speaker 1: family dinner, for the whole week full of dinners.
- 52:46Speaker 2: And it really is a one-stop shop. You don't need
- 52:48Speaker 2: to go anywhere else. Thanks for having us out here.
- 52:50Speaker 6: You bet, OC. It's been a pleasure.
- 52:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 52:53Speaker 1: We got Eric Weddle coming on here in just a
- 52:55Speaker 1: couple of minutes. Right now, I've got to remind you also,
- 52:59Speaker 1: if you're having that barbecue, you're having that tailgate party,
- 53:01Speaker 1: you need drinks.
- 53:02Speaker 2: All right?
- 53:03Speaker 1: Smith's right now has incredible deals today. All up and
- 53:06Speaker 1: down the Wasatch Front, you know there's multiple locations. You
- 53:09Speaker 1: have a Smith's in your neighborhood. You probably have the
- 53:11Speaker 1: app on your phone.

- 54:23Speaker 1: We are not at the Broadway studios today on the
- 54:25Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show. We are at Southern Steer Butcher in
- 54:28Speaker 1: Saratoga Springs, 1705 North Redwood Road.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Even if you're downtown right now, it is worth the trip.
- 54:34Speaker 1: Incredible meats, incredible discounts, and they are hooking up everyone
- 54:38Speaker 1: who mentions the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 54:40Speaker 2: How about this?
- 54:40Speaker 1: A sampler combo, 75 bucks will get you a couple
- 54:43Speaker 1: pounds of ground beef, three pounds of marinated chicken, two
- 54:46Speaker 1: pounds of handmade sausage, and two pounds of marinated steak tips.
- 54:50Speaker 1: And those marinated steak tips are tender, juicy, delicious.
- 54:54Speaker 2: You can't screw them up.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Throw them in the air fryer, throw them on the grill,
- 54:58Speaker 1: cook them however you want, and they're going to be delightful.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Going to have to leave here with some of those.
- 55:03Speaker 1: And maybe I'll have an opportunity to share some this
- 55:06Speaker 1: weekend with our next guest.
- 55:08Speaker 2: It's Weddle Week. He's going into the Ring of Honor.
- 55:11Speaker 1: He is the Utah football legend, the, I believe, future
- 55:15Speaker 1: NFL Hall of Famer. He is the head coach of
- 55:17Speaker 1: the Rancho Bernardo Broncos. He's our guy, Eric Weddle.
- 55:20Speaker 2: E-Dub, what's up?
- 55:22Speaker 3: What's going on, man? Do they ship out of the state?
- 55:25Speaker 3: Because I need to order some of that meat. You know,
- 55:29Speaker 3: you can't have enough meat in the household.
- 55:31Speaker 2: You know what?
- 55:32Speaker 1: They'll ship to Eric Weddle. Big Utah fans down here.
- 55:37Speaker 1: You can make requests that the mere mortals among us cannot.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Look, it's good luck. It's good luck.
- 55:44Speaker 1: I always start the conversation we have with a little
- 55:49Speaker 1: question about your Rancho Bernardo Broncos head coach of the team,
- 55:52Speaker 1: obviously your son playing for the team, and big win
- 55:57Speaker 1: over Torrey Pines. First win on the road at Torrey
- 56:00Speaker 1: since 2008, is that right?
- 56:02Speaker 3: That is correct. Man, just talk about a gritty, tough...
- 56:08Speaker 3: I mean, Torrey Pines historically is one of the better
- 56:11Speaker 3: programs in San Diego and always a tough team to
- 56:15Speaker 3: go against. I mean, the stats show it, right? We
- 56:18Speaker 3: had one there... in a long time. So, the boys
- 56:23Speaker 3: played hard. I mean, outside of a couple misfortune plays, right? Like,
- 56:29Speaker 3: I don't like to blame the rest, but man, there
- 56:31Speaker 3: were like five calls in that game that were either
- 56:35Speaker 3: missed calls or not that could have swayed and made
- 56:39Speaker 3: it not such a close game where we had to
- 56:41Speaker 3: score 21 points in the second half on three possessions.
- 56:44Speaker 3: We had five total possessions in the game for like
- 56:49Speaker 3: It's just crazy how we get into these games four
- 56:52Speaker 3: drives of 15 plays or more. That's the type of
- 56:54Speaker 3: game it was. So really proud. We didn't waver. We
- 56:58Speaker 3: stayed connected. And won at the end, man. It was
- 57:01Speaker 3: a thrilling game.
- 57:03Speaker 1: And this week it's a Utah team. Westlake taking the
- 57:07Speaker 1: trip down there to sunny San Diego. That will be,
- 57:11Speaker 1: of course, Friday night. And then on Saturday you're coming
- 57:13Speaker 1: here to the Utah game. What's the scouting report on Westlake?
- 57:16Speaker 2: They're 3-1.
- 57:18Speaker 3: Yeah, Westlake, really good program. They play tough, play hard.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Got some talented dudes. The receiver is, I believe, a
- 57:29Speaker 3: Utah State commit, number 13. And then they have a
- 57:32Speaker 3: D lineman, number eight. That's one of the best, probably
- 57:38Speaker 3: the best player we see defensively. And we have to
- 57:42Speaker 3: have a plan for him every snap. and know where
- 57:47Speaker 3: he's at and can't let him ruin the game, which
- 57:50Speaker 3: he can on any play. So I'm excited for the
- 57:54Speaker 3: challenge and the matchup. I think our boys are. I
- 57:56Speaker 3: think they understand what the mindset that needs to be taken.
- 58:00Speaker 3: Like this team's coming down here out of state, so
- 58:04Speaker 3: want to take it to us, and we have to
- 58:07Speaker 3: defend our home crowd, home state, and take it to them.
- 58:13Speaker 2: All right, talking a little Utah football now.
- 58:15Speaker 1: You're coming into town for no big deal, just, you know,
- 58:19Speaker 1: immortalization on the side of Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 58:21Speaker 2: It's Eric Weddle Week.
- 58:23Speaker 1: You're being inducted into the Ring of Honor. And we
- 58:25Speaker 1: talked to you about this when it was announced that
- 58:28Speaker 1: it would be happening. Now that the reality of it
- 58:31Speaker 1: is here, it's happening in just a couple of days.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Has it changed the way you're thinking about it, your process?
- 58:36Speaker 1: You know, just tell me what it means.
- 58:37Speaker 10: To you again.
- 58:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I think now that it's, here I'm probably most
- 58:44Speaker 3: excited about is to just see the fans and and
- 58:50Speaker 3: I know I'm going around like early to different tailgates
- 58:53Speaker 3: and going in different uh parts of the stadium throughout
- 58:58Speaker 3: the first quarter to say hello and hang out with
- 59:01Speaker 3: fans I mean really like sharing the experience like I said,
- 59:05Speaker 3: sharing it with everyone that had a hand in it
- 59:08Speaker 3: or supported me to try to let them be involved
- 59:14Speaker 3: in it. So I think that's what I'm most excited for,
- 59:16Speaker 3: is to see old teammates. I know I got a
- 59:19Speaker 3: few texts from old teammates that are coming in to
- 59:22Speaker 3: reminisce and be there. So it's just going to be awesome. Like,
- 59:26Speaker 3: I don't get too emotional about, about things, I'm sure
- 59:30Speaker 3: I may get a little emotional about it.
- 59:32Speaker 2: Maybe no one.
- 59:33Speaker 3: Would really recognize it because I'm a cold-faced type of guy.
- 59:38Speaker 3: But like you said, this is like one in a million, right,
- 59:45Speaker 3: to be able to be in this situation. And I
- 59:49Speaker 3: don't take it for granted and really humbled by it all.
- 59:51Speaker 3: I'm just going to take it all in and enjoy
- 59:53Speaker 3: every second of it.
- 59:55Speaker 2: What did you like most? from your Utes in the
- 59:58Speaker 2: Idaho game.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Obviously, it went kind of the way that we expected
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: it to, that we thought it should. You know, big demolition.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: You scored a bunch of points. You held them under
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: three scores. I would have liked to see that, maybe
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: even more dominant performance defensively. But what did you like
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: from Utah in week one against Idaho?
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, we talked about it last week.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: I wanted to see, like, clean operation. I didn't want
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: to see pre-snap penalties. Obviously, there'll be physical errors and
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: mistakes just because it's live action going against someone that
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: you don't know. So that's going to happen. But, man,
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: it was just an exciting brand of football. And I
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: liked how Idaho fought back for a little bit and
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: really threw some punches back. It wasn't just a total
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: rollover like some games can be in that situation. And
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: going against that offensive line for Idaho, I think they
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: were all– Returning starters are older guys that had a
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: lot of game experience, so it was good for us
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: to get our feet wet against that group on the
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: defensive line. And I just think we got a chance. Obviously,
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: a big game against Arkansas, but I think we showed
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: our potential with the running game. Weishan is just so
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: fun to watch. His physicality, his twitchiness, his one-cut ability. Obviously,
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: the receiving out of the backfields, and our perimeter guys.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: Being able to just throw it up and our guy
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: come down with the ball and win those one-on-one type
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: contests is something that I think is pivotal to have
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: a great offense and to make some waves down the
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: stretch against good teams.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: You, as much as anyone, maybe more than a lot
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: of people, you have been a big fan of Bert
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Ficklin and his potential, and we saw good things from
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: him in game one, and He had at least one
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: throw go viral because he's rolling right and he flips
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: his hips and he throws a dot and all that stuff.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: I bring it up because they have found this nice
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: harmony with him and Devin Dampier, but they're both playmakers
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: and you've got to get both of those guys opportunities
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: as often as you can in a game. How do
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: you manage it moving forward? How do you manage it
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: in obviously a much tougher test against Arkansas? How do
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: you get the most out of Bird, not just Devin?
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think I think the package of plays,
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: whether it's him running the ball, whether it's him, you know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: Devin motioning out, and now he's playing true quarterback, not
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: overdoing it and you're forcing the issue, but also allowing
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: the chance to make plays for the offense with Bird.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: So I don't– I like that he's getting in there.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: I just don't want it to get too much where
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: you're affecting the rhythm of Devin in the offense. of
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: being successful series and series. So I think they manage
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: it well. I just don't want it to be, like
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: I said, don't want to be too much on the
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: offense because as a quarterback, you like to be in rhythm.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: You like to be in those situations. You like to
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: see it. You like to learn from it from series
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: and series. So as long as they manage that, I
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: think it'll be fine. And the more we can get
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: him experience for when he takes over, it'll be great.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: Eric Weddle is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: It is Weddle Week. He's going into the Utah Ring
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: of Honor this weekend. It's a late kickoff. It's a
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: true night game.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Arkansas is only the second SEC team to come to Rice-Eccles. Obviously,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Florida did it a couple of weeks ago, or a
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: couple of years ago, I should say. I've been, like,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: you know, dipping my toes in the Arkansas waters, Dub.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I've been, like, what are their podcasts saying? What are
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: their alumni saying?
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh, me too.
- 1:03:43Speaker 13: Me too.
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: What are they? And, like.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Even what their coach is saying, I think he's a
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: good coach, but, like, he's more focused on the kickoff
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: time than any other thing that is going on in
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: this game. And I'm like, I'm trying not to get
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: too gassed up, but I'm like, I don't think Arkansas
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: has any idea what they're going to be walking into.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Are you getting the same sense?
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: A thousand percent. It's the typical arrogance of the SEC,
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: and coming into, oh, your stadium's only 55,000, and, oh.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: It's not even that big. And, oh, it can't be
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: that loud because of the people. Yeah, when you're going
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: full start six times tomorrow night, Saturday night, and we
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: get after your guys' tails and beat you by 30,
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: I'm going to come on the following week and remind
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: all the podcasts, this ain't your just ho-hum mid-major it
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: was 20 years ago. We're coming for heads. Arkansas is
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: next on the list. So I've been hearing it over
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: and over again just on my timeline, hearing these guys. Obviously,
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: it's just funny, commentators and podcast people that aren't even
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: affiliated with the team, they're just talking heads. Like you played,
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: and you played on the Utes, so you understand kind
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: of like a night game at Utah, right? These people
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: don't understand. You don't come in. to Salt Lake at
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Rice-Eccles in a night game and come away with a win.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: It just doesn't happen. Why don't you ask Caleb Williams
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: how those games went when they played night games in Utah?
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: They lose. So I can't wait to be a part
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: of it, to celebrate in the locker room, fighting the
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: Utah man fight song, and celebrating.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: So Arkansas has got some stuff to figure out, and
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: They've got one guy who's a projected potential first-round pick.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: This Quincy Rhodes Jr., 97, playing DN for them, playing
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: on their D-line. He's a real problem if he's healthy. Now,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: he didn't play a ton against North Alabama. Maybe they
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: were saving him so he'd be more healthy against Utah.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I think that's what's going on. But let's just assume
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: he's 100%. You don't want to, like, overdo it and
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: over-index to only worry about one guy on their defense.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: But You also have to pay attention to it.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: Like you're saying, when they've got a game wrecker, a
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: potential game wrecker, you've got to pay attention to it.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: And this is an inexperienced offensive line that's working in.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: A lot of new things. How do you handle that?
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: How do you handle a potential outlier-type talent on the
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: defensive line for Arkansas?
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, we're kind of going at
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: it in a very smaller– example this week, but the
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: offensive line, you have to play together, right? You've got
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: to have great technique. You don't want to, like, a
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: lot of times offensive linemen, I think in general, like,
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: when you're going against a really good player on the
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: other side that you want to get your hands on
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: as quick as possible, and then you want to lunge,
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: and instead of just setting square and understanding where your
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: help is, right? Are we getting the center to slide
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: to you? Are we a full slide? Are we a
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: four-man slide? Am I getting the back to chip with you? Like,
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: there's so much that the offensive coach can help the
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: offensive line when you're going against a premier player that
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: it's going to take everyone, but you don't, it's like
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Miles Garrett or Aaron Donald or these guys, like you don't,
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: you don't want to ever leave them one-on-one, right? Like
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: that's just dumb football because they're just that good. So
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: some plays you'll have to like quick game, thirties, fifties,
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: where you're getting five out, that quarterback has to make
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: the offensive line, right? You know what I'm saying? Like,
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: That's on the quarterback. But when we're going six, seven-man protection,
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: be smart, do what your coaches do. And I honestly
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: think the offensive line are going to play great on
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: Saturday night because of the coaches, the strength coaches, the
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: strength staff, the work they put in. They're going to
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: continue week by week to show what they're all about.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Have you talked to Morgan this week and been like, hey,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: make sure that you're playing some weddle highlights for the
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: guys that are on the team? A lot of these
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: guys were born after you played at the University of Utah,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: so they know you from your NFL career. I don't
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: know how many of them have seen the highlights. Did
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: you tell Morgan, hey, make sure they know whose presence
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: they're going to be amongst this weekend?
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: Well, you know me as good as anyone, so I
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: doubt you would think I would say something like that.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: I did talk to him Saturday night. he called me
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: just to check in with the game and then some
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: other games that were going on. So we chatted for
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: a little bit. But this week, like, nothing needs to
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: be said. All I care about, and I said this,
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: I think I said this last week, I don't care
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: if anything is acknowledged about me as long as we
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: get this win. I really do not care. These kids,
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: Whether they know about me or not is irrelevant in
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: the grand scheme of things. Just focus on ball, focus
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: on your job, and let's get this done.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Eric Weddle for a couple more minutes here on the
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Weddle Week.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Will conclude on Saturday night when he is inducted into
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: the Ring of Honor at the Utah versus Arkansas game.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: The biggest story in college football this week was not
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: Utah's win over Idaho, even though we stay pretty central here.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: Of course, it was a lot of former Utah guys
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: connected now to that University of Michigan team that got
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: an extra second on the clock after a crazy replay,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: after a hard-fought game against the Western Michigan team that kind.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: Of took it to them.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: I know you have some thoughts on this scenario, so
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: please share them with us on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, I couldn't, I didn't start watching the game. We,
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: Gage and I, went to the San Diego State game
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: to see Steve and his son Stone, who's the backup
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: quarterback there, and then Obviously, you know, it's the hometown,
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: so I want to support the guys and the players.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: So I didn't start watching the game until about six
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: minutes left in the game. Gage had been watching it,
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: and he's like, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan? Western, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Western.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: Yeah. He's like, Western Michigan is going to win. And
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: I'm like, no, they're not. Like, they're going to pull
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: it out. Like, that's just how it goes. Like, they're
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: just figuring it out. And then he's like, Dad, they're
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: going to win. Like, they're up. And I'm like, what
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: are you talking about? So I started watching it, and
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: I'm just getting blown up, whether it's on Twitter, whether
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: it's on text messages from coaches, from other schools, this, that,
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: and the other. And I don't say that to say
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: that I'm right, right? I don't really care about anything
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: outside of Utah football, right? And I actually want Michigan
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: to win deep down. But I don't, like, I'm not
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: watching them. I don't really, like, support them. So when
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: I'm seeing all these messages come in, like, then I
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: got to go, what's going on? How are they playing?
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: And they're struggling. Long story short, it should be, they
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: should be 0-1. Everyone knows it. The voters know it.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: And it's unfortunate that Western Michigan got hosed. somehow some
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: way that they're not going to have that win on
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: their resume for the rest of the time. Right. Like
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: they probably will never be in that situation again to
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: beat Michigan, the big brother. Uh, it would be like,
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: you know, what Utah state is, I think is, I
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: believe it's beat us. Right. Some, somewhere down the future,
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: maybe even like Weber state, like imagine Weber state in
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: a game against us and they beat us. And so,
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: but then we, that wouldn't get taken away. Like that's
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: basically what happened. Uh, But they made the play at
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: the end, and we'll see. I didn't really watch the
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: game other than the last, and I saw what I saw.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: I think they'll be in a rude awakening, Oklahoma coming
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: to town, and we'll see what happens. I don't know.
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: Don't know.
- 1:12:05Speaker 13: Don't care.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: I don't need to say I was right or wrong.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: It doesn't matter to me. I live my life. I
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: don't need to profess what I said. four months ago
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: was right. It does not matter. Everyone can have their
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: own opinion. And, uh, I wish those guys the best. Seriously. Like,
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: I don't want to see anyone not play well. I've
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: been there and it's tough. We'll see how Underwood, uh,
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: responds to the lack of good play and the, the,
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: the attention that's on them. And especially coach with basically saying,
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: if you don't play better, you're, we're going in a
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: different direction. So let's see how he handles it. And, uh,
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Truth be told, I'm hoping that he responds the right
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: way for him in his career because if not, he
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: won't be playing quarterback anymore.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Well, you don't have to take the victory lap because
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: everyone already said, we're sorry, Eric Weddle, you were right
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: about Bryce Underwood. And it was hilarious for the rest
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: of us to see because when an average fan who
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: doesn't know what they're watching on the same level you
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: is trying to argue with something that you said that
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: wasn't even hypercritical, it was just like an observation, and
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: then obviously– They're all feeling the same way four months later.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: It was pretty hilarious.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: But Eric Weddle knows what he's watching when he's watching
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: quarterbacks because that's what he was.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Trying to defeat for 14 years in the NFL, people.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: With that in mind, and maybe you have the same
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: evaluation of Drake May as you do of Bryce Underwood,
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: but he had a disastrous start to the NFL season
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: last night. I don't know how much of it you
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: got to watch because you're coaching and all that stuff.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: But three turnovers for Drake May, including a game-deciding interception
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: and when they were driving for a potential touchdown or
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: at least a field goal to tie.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: What's going on with Drake May?
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I watched, I watched, I think about
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: the first quarter and then we had night practice last night.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: So I saw the highlights of how those last few
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: series went. And it just goes back to like, even
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: the pros do dumb things. And it's, it's just a reality.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: Like it's human nature. You try to limit everything. the
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: mistakes that are like, like I just, perfect example, like
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: you're looking at the last play, the under 20 seconds.
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: It's knowing the situation. It's knowing the play, right? You
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: got both tackles cut blocking. So that, as a quarterback
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: is saying, it's a rocker step ball out, right? If not,
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: then I'm just running, right? Like I understand, like I
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: have no protection. So for him to backpedal, lean away
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: and just throw the ball up is just, that's like
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: a fireable offense as a quarterback. And to see that
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: from a, a season, like a second year guy, uh,
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: it's just unfortunate because you just can't make that mistake.
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: And so the mistakes that happen are all in my
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: mind fixable, but when he goes against good teams, this
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: has kind of been what happens. And now their, their
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: schedule is tough with a lot of good teams. So,
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: They'll get it right. He'll figure it out because he
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: has the ability and the mind. But to see those
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: kind of mistakes late in the game where you know
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: they're going over those situations, you know they're stressing in
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: this situation, how are we going to play? This is
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: the call. And to be, like, on the other side
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: of it is really unfortunate as a coach because you're
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: just like, what the heck are you thinking right now?
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: But even pros lose their minds. So it's great, a
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: reminder as a coach to, like, gosh, I'm going to
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: rip Gage's you-know-what for a decision, well, dang, the pros
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: are doing it just as bad.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you do see some of that. Not supposed to
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: see it as often in the pros, but you do
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: get it every now and again.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: No, definitely not. I'm not even going to ask you.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: About the Rams-Niners game because I don't want you to
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: say hurtful things when we're celebrating you this week, but
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: will you have a chance to even watch it tonight?
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: You know what's about to happen tonight.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: I do.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: I know what's about to happen. The 49ers are going
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: to dominate Miles Garrett. They're going to make him look
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: like it's his first year.
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: Even you don't believe that. Even you don't believe that
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: in the heart of hearts. You don't believe that. Even
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: though you're saying it right now, you don't truly believe it.
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: When we talk about the Utes, we really believe. If
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: we had to go play in Ohio State, we would
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: think we could go win. But you know... Australia, they
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: went four days earlier because they're worried about the time.
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: You know what the Rams did? They said, man, we're
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: going to fly at 5,000 feet. We're going to sleep in.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: We're going to sleep the whole time. We're going to
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: wake up the next day, and we're just going to
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: go play. And we're just going to go beat your
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: faces in. So, you know who's not worried about the
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: time change?
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: The Rams.
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: And you know who is? Arkansas and the Niners. And
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: what is both going to happen to them? They're going
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: to get their faces drugged in the grass.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: You know what I'm most mad about with this Niners-Rams
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: game is the Rams are like, we're not even going
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: to bring Aaron Donald. That's how not worried about this
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: matchup the Rams are.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: They're like, this is a– Yeah, we don't even need
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: a– hey, give them a couple more weeks to get ready.
- 1:17:18Speaker 13: We're fine.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: We'll manage these couple weeks. We're not worried about birdies
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: and half the guys that are already hurt. Like, we're good.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: That's disrespectful. All right? I hate it.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Like, if Arkansas was rolling into Salt Lake City– And
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: they're like, we're not bringing Quincy Rhodes Jr. He's not
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: coming on the trip. And we'll be like, oh, because
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: he's hurt? No, we're just going to give him a
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: couple more weeks to.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: Get ready for games that we're actually worried about. I
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: would be furious.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. So maybe the Niners will take that approach. Maybe.
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know. I hope.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: I hope they're as mad as I am.
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: We shall see. I will be sending a text about
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: 9 o'clock tonight. So be ready for it.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: All right. Well, you're the man.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Absolutely love you, dog. Excited to see you this weekend.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: Good luck to you and the boys tomorrow night against Westlake. And, yeah,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: looking forward to Saturday.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: You got it, bro. Can't wait to see you. Love you.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: And let's go Utes, baby!
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: That's the legend.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: That's Eric Weddle going into the Ring of Honor Saturday
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: against Arkansas.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: He is the absolute best.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: Except he likes the Rams too much, and they're playing
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: the Niners.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: No one can be perfect, all right?
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: He's almost there, but he just has bad taste in
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: NFC West teams, which is a plague in my life.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I'm surrounded by people who don't root for the Niners
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: or Rams or Seahawks or whatever.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: But that's fine because you know what makes me feel better?
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: Being down here at Southern Steer Butcher, 1705 North Redwood Road,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Saratoga Springs. We've got a nice little flow of people
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: coming in, getting their meats for the weekend. They've got
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: tailgate parties. They've got barbecues going on. Dan Gunther is
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: the brains behind the operation.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Happy to have us out here, I hope. Man, what
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: a cool day so far.
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: And congratulations to Eric Weddle, man. What a legend. I mean,
- 1:19:15Speaker 6: talk about Utah, man. There's the guy.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: You know, right, he heard me talking about the meet.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: He's like, hey, do they ship?
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: Can I get them to ship to Southern California?
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: I'm like, look, we can probably make something happen for
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Eric Weddle.
- 1:19:29Speaker 6: Sure, sure. Send him a dino boat.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: There we go.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: So what's the top seller, right? When people come in,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: what is like the main driver? What's the bread and
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: butter of this place?
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: Yeah, the most popular is the marinated meats, right? I mean,
- 1:19:43Speaker 6: you know, those steak tips, obviously, we put out on
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: sample every day. People come in for the first time.
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: They try those. They're like, oh, yeah, I got to
- 1:19:51Speaker 6: get that. As a matter of fact, there's times when
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: my team and I, people will come in. They'll buy
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: a T-bone or something, and we'll just send them home
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: with a couple of steak tips just to try because,
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: you know, we– We want them to have that experience
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: with those. And then they come back in there, those
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: steak tips were so good. So that's usually the key,
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: you know, most popular item here.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: Well, you've got that. You've got all the mains, right?
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: The centerpiece of pretty much every meal at my house
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: is the meat, right? And you've got the chicken. You've
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: got the pork. You've got the exotic meats. Obviously, you've
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: got every cut of beef you could imagine.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: But also.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: You've got sides, and you've got, like, breads, and you've
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: got dips, and you've got marinades. So really, I mean,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: it's not a full grocery store here. It is the
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: old-school butcher shop with the modern twist. But I can
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: walk in here, and I can walk out with everything
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: I need for a meal for the family, multiple meals
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: for the family.
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, we even have, like, local farmer eggs
- 1:20:52Speaker 6: from Eagle Mountain, right? Fresh eggs right behind you in
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: the case there. Yeah, they're right here. We're really trying
- 1:20:59Speaker 6: to accentuate Utah-owned vendors. My wife and I, before we
- 1:21:06Speaker 6: opened the store, we spent a lot of time going
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: to farmer's markets and checking out local vendors with honeys
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: and cheeses and things like that. So we're really trying
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: to bring in a lot of that local flavor into
- 1:21:17Speaker 6: the store, just kind of the way it was back
- 1:21:20Speaker 6: in the day, right? You go to a small-town butcher somewhere,
- 1:21:23Speaker 6: and it's mostly just the vendors that are in that
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: local area that are providing those products in that store.
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: So that's kind of the theme or the element for
- 1:21:33Speaker 6: this concept.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: It is worth the trip.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Even if you live up above downtown Salt Lake like
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: I do, I'm in the avenues. It didn't take me
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: long to get here today.
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: I timed it out.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: It was about a little over half an hour to
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: get down to 1705 North Redwood Road, where Southern Steer
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: has everything you need for this weekend's barbecue, for the
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: birthday party, for the tailgate. And Dan and Aubrey, they
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: might sucker you in with those steak tips, all right?
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: The samples, they're going to get you.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: I'm just going to warn you because you think I'm
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: just going to get the hamburgers, I'm just going to
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: get the hot dogs. You're going to want to leave
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: with more than that. So just prepare yourself for it
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: because it's great stuff all up and down the menu
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: here at Southern Steer.
- 1:22:13Speaker 6: Yeah, we have picanha, hanger steak, I mean, you name it.
- 1:22:17Speaker 6: If you want to experiment on your grill and try
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: a cut of meat that you've never tried to cook before,
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: I mean, all of our team members are really well-versed
- 1:22:27Speaker 6: on how to prepare these meats and can kind of
- 1:22:29Speaker 6: talk you through it. Try something different.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: I think that's probably my favorite thing about this whole concept, right?
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: Because for the people who are foodies and the people
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: who want to try something new and the people that
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: want something like truly gourmet, high attention to detail, you
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: could serve that market, right? You can get those people
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: the best meat, the best meal that they can imagine.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: But also, if you're just a mom or dad on
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: the go that's busy.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: And you just need something that's convenient.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: You need to come in and grab something that's healthy,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: that's got real nutrients for the family. You've got the
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: pre-made meals, right, that's just like, okay, here's your sides,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: here's your meat. Go throw this on the grill. Go
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: throw this in the air fryer. Go throw that in
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: the microwave if you have to. And you've got a
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: family meal tonight, tomorrow night, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I mean,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: you can feed your whole family here, which is what
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: they have at Southern Steer.
- 1:23:15Speaker 6: Yeah, of course. People go to the grocery store, the supermarket,
- 1:23:20Speaker 6: for the convenience of being able to get everything. Obviously,
- 1:23:24Speaker 6: we're trying to make them come for an extra stop.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:23:27Speaker 6: But when you come in for that extra stop, you
- 1:23:29Speaker 6: can pick up everything you need for a meal for
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: that evening, right? Really quick and easy. You take it
- 1:23:36Speaker 6: home in half an hour, and it's ready to go
- 1:23:38Speaker 6: for your family.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: And I don't know how you're doing it with this
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: high-quality stuff at these prices, but I'm glad you are
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: because everyone here in Utah is real price conscious, and
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: you're meeting people where you need to.
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: Yeah, it's been really fun. The concept and the folks
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: that have come in since we've opened have really expressed
- 1:23:55Speaker 6: gratitude that we're here to provide this type of service.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: Artisanal meats, humanely raised, clean, without all the stuff, the chemicals,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: the hormones, the things that you don't want in your
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: family's bodies. 1705 North Redwood Road, Saratoga Springs. Come in
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: during the show, and if you can't make it during
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: the show, Tell Dan and Aubrey you heard about it
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: on the Sean O'Connell Show and on ESPN 700.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: They'll hook you up. Thanks, Dan. You bet.

- 1:25:29Speaker 2: All right. You know what? I'm going to get it
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: out of the way.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I'm going to start with the sad news so we
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: can move on to more humorous or enjoyable things.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: This does stink, though, because.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: Barry Melrose, who has been the main hockey guy on
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: television broadcasts, on television analysis for ESPN for a very
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: long time. Barry Melrose, when they contracted and they stopped
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: covering hockey so much, Barry Melrose was like the last
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: holdover because Barry Melrose was the man of the people.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: He was the guy that everyone wanted to hear from.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Barry Melrose has passed away at the age of 70.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: They made the announcement yesterday. That's tragic. You hate to
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: see it happen to anyone. You hate to see it
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: happen to anyone that's a relatively young age right now
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: in modern technology and medicine. Obviously, he was a part
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: of everyone's hockey experience before we were a big-time hockey
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: market even.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: RIP to Barry Melrose.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: And condolences to his friends and family and all the
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: people that grew up on Barry Melrose hockey and Barry
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: Melrose hockey analysis. It's a weird thing when we see
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: this happen with our the sports announcers of our childhood,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: the celebrities of our childhood, right? Because they don't know you,
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: but you have, like, memories associated with them on your
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: television or sparking conversations that you have with your actual
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: loved ones and stuff. It's a really weird place where,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: you know, you're mourning a stranger kind of. But, yeah,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: Barry Melrose passes away at age 70.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: Huge bummer. Yeah, OC, just real quick.
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: As someone like myself who did not grow up a
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: hockey fan really at all, I always liked his hits
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: on SportsCenter with Steve Levy or whoever it was growing up.
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: He was that guy that, and I think in the
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: early 2000s, 90s, before that, there seemed to be one
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: guy of every sport that worked for ESPN that would
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: do those SportsCenter hits that even if I didn't like
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: the sport or I was not yet a fan of
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: the sport, I loved hearing them talk about the sport.
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: And that's what Barry Melrose was for me. I hardly
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: ever watched a hockey game, but I always looked forward
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: to hearing Barry Melrose talk about that night's hockey or
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: what's coming up because he was that great of a personality.
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: He was that great of an advocate for the game
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: and just that good at making it entertaining.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: Even if I didn't like the sport.
- 1:27:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: He's just, His accent, everything, like the presentation, the slick
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: back hair, the cool suits. Barry Melrose was just, you know,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: cooler than the other side of the pillow. And unfortunately,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: Parkinson's brought a premature end to his life. So a
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: bum deal. But I like this is this pretty much
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: sums it up for me. The unquestioned face and voice
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: of hockey in the U.S. is how ESPN. That's the
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: headline they gave it. And you can't argue with any
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: of that when you were. Like the example you just gave, James,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: when you were tuning in and watching other things, the
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: information you got about hockey was from Barry Melrose. So,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: condolences to his friends and family. Alright, trying to switch
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: to less depressing subject matter. Sports Illustrated put out a
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: list of their best home field advantages in college football.
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: James, did you see this?
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: We sometimes overestimate where our local venues are placed in
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: the overall lexicon.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: Of sports, right?
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: There was a time when the Delta Center with the
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: Utah Jazz was one of the more feared places in
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: the NBA because there was a lot of winning going
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: on at the Delta Center. And, of course, that begets
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: a rabid fan base, which then creates a lot more
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: craziness and a lot more loudness.
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: In more recent years.
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: Where the on-court success has not been quite as prevalent
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: you've had uh delta center crowds uh develop a reputation
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: for things that are less flattering uh now that it's
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: a hockey barn also starting to get a little attention
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: there in the league si put out a list ranking
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: the 12 best home field advantages in college football james
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: where do you think rice echo stadium appears on the
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: list if they.
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: Do what sorry how many are on the list again
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: 12 top 12 yeah nine.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: Seven. Seven. All right. Shout out to you. Rice Eccles
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: Stadium at number seven.
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: In terms of whole field advantages, Rice Eccles Stadium offers
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: the Utes quite a few.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: For starters, the stadium sits.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: At 4,600 feet above sea level, which can make a
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: visiting team more quickly.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Then there's the must. Shout out to the must.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: One of the most electric and rambunctious student sections in
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: the country, never failing to pack the house. To that end,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: the Utes have sold out 96 consecutive games at Rice Eccles.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: The blurb goes on to cite that the run from
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: 2018 to the early parts of the 2024 season before
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: the wheels fell off. The Utes had dropped just three
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: home games in a seven-year span, and they even played
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: a number of ranked teams in that time. One of
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: the loudest and toughest environments by multiple coaches in the
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Big 12, and it is the only Big 12 venue
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: on the list. So you've got that going for you,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: Rice-Eckel Stadium. A little shout-out from Sports Illustrated.
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: Before the 24th season, one of those losses was that
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: USC season opener in 2020, which we don't even like
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: to count the whole season, but particularly the season opener
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: when you had to start in, what, November or whatever
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: it was, October, when you didn't even know you were
- 1:31:21Speaker 4: going to have a season until then. That was as
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: fluky as all get out. Cam Rising has that season-ending
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: shoulder injury in the first quarter of that game, too.
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: after he won the job in 2020.
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: 2020 doesn't count. So, yeah, that one you can wash out.
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: So if you take that away, they only had two
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: home losses in that seven-year stretch. And even if you
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: count 2024, they.
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: Barely lost at home.
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: So I'm glad that Sports Illustrated is recognizing them in
- 1:31:51Speaker 4: this way. And it just validates again what Weddle said
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: about Arkansas being scared to play Utah at night. And
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: while also saying, ah, they can't be that good of
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: a home crowd, only 50,000 people in the stands. We're
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: used to closer to 100,000 in SEC country. Well, I mean,
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: Weddle's probably right again that they're going to find out
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: just how hard it is to play at Rice-Eccles.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: The full list is available on Sports Illustrated, and it is,
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: as one might expect, it is full of a bunch
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: of SEC stadiums.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: My computer is frozen, and that's why I'm filibustering. But
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: it's a.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: Flattering list for Rice-Eccles Stadium and the University of Utah
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: to appear on. You've got, you know, every stadium in
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: the country is eligible to be one of these top
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: home field advantages. And Rice-Eccles, the fans here, Utah fans,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: not just University of Utah fans, but fans in the
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: state of Utah seem to be as prideful about about
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: that as they are about anything. Is that an accurate assessment?
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: About our home court or home field advantages? 100%, yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: I mean, there's great argument to be made that Jazz
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: fans have the– that the Delta Center and Jazz fans
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: create the best home court advantage in the NBA even.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: But they're good, yeah. There's others.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: The full list goes like this. It's Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, okay?
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: Oklahoma's stadium is the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Ben
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: Hill Griffin Stadium, more affectionately referred.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: To as the Swamp.
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: Utah fans experience just what kind of home field advantage
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: that could be a few years ago, yeah.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: Memorial Stadium of the Clemson Tigers. Saban Field at Bryant-Denny
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: Stadium for the Alabama Crimson Tide, number seven, as we
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: already mentioned, Rice-Eccles. Sanford Stadium, home of the Georgia Bulldogs.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Beaver Stadium, where the Penn State Nittany Lions play. And
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: they talk so much about the whiteouts that it's like, okay,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: are you a great home field advantage just during whiteout games?
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: Number four, Kyle Field, Texas A & M, the 12th man.
- 1:34:06Speaker 9: Sure.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: The original 12th man. Thanks a lot for copying another thing,
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks. Ohio Stadium, the shoe for your Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Autzen Stadium is number two on the list, home of
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: the Oregon Ducks. And then Death Valley, Tiger Stadium. where
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: LSU applies their trade, is the number one home field advantage,
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: according to Sports Illustrated. Since 2000, the Tigers are 154-26
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: at home, and a particular emphasis, as it is at Rice-Eccles,
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: on night games. It used to be even scarier because
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: they actually had the Tiger on.
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: The field at LSU. The live Tiger.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: They decided that was animal cruelty, and they stopped bringing
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: Mike the Tiger home. down to the field during games
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: where the decibel level is hitting like 130. But, yeah,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: they've created a world-class zoo enclosure for Mike the Tiger
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: across the street from the stadium. They still have a
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: live LSU tiger mascot, but now he's in the best
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: tiger enclosure from a captivity standpoint that you can find,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: which is probably much better for the animal.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: Better than Joe Exotics? wow or doc antles all right um.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: I i've been debating on whether or not we actually
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: want to play this dan i mean from dan from
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: dan patrick uh let's just play the sound and see
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: if people can recognize without me telling you who this
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: is calling in to the dan patrick show.
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: Zach in california joining us on the program good morning
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: zach what's on your mind.
- 1:35:51Speaker 13: Ciao, DP. I got to say, first time, long time, 6'6, 220,
- 1:35:57Speaker 13: all beer belly.
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: Eh?
- 1:36:02Speaker 13: All right, and I got three things for you, but
- 1:36:04Speaker 13: I'll make them quick. Number one, I don't remember if
- 1:36:07Speaker 13: it was you or Marvin that was talking about an
- 1:36:09Speaker 13: owner meddling with the draft or somebody asking about the
- 1:36:13Speaker 13: fastest 40, but it was killing me when you guys
- 1:36:15Speaker 13: were talking about it because you missed the biggest story.
- 1:36:18Speaker 13: Al Davis, God rest his soul, walked into– I was
- 1:36:22Speaker 13: doing the Raiders pre- and post-game at that time. He
- 1:36:25Speaker 13: walked into the room and said– I don't care who
- 1:36:28Speaker 13: you guys want to take, who has the fastest 40.
- 1:36:30Speaker 13: And they said Darius Hayward Bay. And they were going
- 1:36:35Speaker 13: to take Michael Crabtree, who ironically got drafted by the 49ers.
- 1:36:40Speaker 13: And I was like, how did you guys not put
- 1:36:41Speaker 13: that story together? But you probably didn't know that. Anyway,
- 1:36:45Speaker 13: I know you love Reggie Miller. I do too. But
- 1:36:47Speaker 13: my favorite, number 31, is the Matrix, Sean Marion. I
- 1:36:50Speaker 13: would love to know your thoughts. on him as a player.
- 1:36:54Speaker 13: And finally, Dan, you're simulcast in like a thousand cities.
- 1:36:57Speaker 13: I've worked in one of those. I will not name
- 1:36:59Speaker 13: the station, but one of those quote unquote consultants that
- 1:37:03Speaker 13: I'm sure at some point during your career, you've come across,
- 1:37:07Speaker 13: came in and literally hit me with, well, why can't
- 1:37:10Speaker 13: you just be like Dan Patrick? And I said, I said, well, look,
- 1:37:16Speaker 13: I know you love your front room and your back
- 1:37:18Speaker 13: room and all your guys. I told him, I said
- 1:37:20Speaker 13: straight to his face, I said, because not many people
- 1:37:23Speaker 13: are Dan Patrick. Anyway, I don't want to toot your horn,
- 1:37:25Speaker 13: love you, Paul, Todd, Patrick, Marvin, Dylan, all the guys.
- 1:37:28Speaker 13: My point is, is like, you know, people don't really
- 1:37:31Speaker 13: understand the industry until you're in the industry.
- 1:37:33Speaker 11: Thank you, Zach. And Zach in California, full of energy there.
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: Oh, that's our guy Zachariah. Remember what he used to
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: fill in for me? I still love him.
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: I know that there were a certain contingent of you
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: that didn't like Zachariah on the radio.
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: He was too cowly for you. I love the dude.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: Great friend of mine.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: And hearing him call into the Dan Patrick show, I
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: can't wait to call him after this show is over
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: so that I can give him a hard time about that.
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: James heard that live.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: I was not listening to Dan Patrick when that happened.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: James alerted me to it. Thanks for pulling that sound, James.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: That's a little local connection.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: Our guy Zachariah, who used to be a part of
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: the station here, is my fill-in host when I was
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: away for PFL duties.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: Zachariah on the Dan Patrick Show.
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: And now if you didn't know, everyone knows the station
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: he was referring to when he told that story.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: About working at one of.
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: The stations that aired the Dan Patrick Show.
- 1:38:34Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: He didn't name who he was talking about, the consultant
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: he was talking about. I know who he was talking about.
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: Can't speak to that, but great story about our station.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: You know who he's talking about, too, James. Well, I
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: don't know for sure. I'll just put it that way.
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: All right, great stuff. Reminder to all of you as
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: we finish up the Daily Dump that we've got an
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: injury report coming. It's the first official one because it's
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: the first Big 12 game of the season.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: Reminder that if you need any help with any plumbing,
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: any HVAC, any excavation, the truck with the duck is
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: your best option. Daily Dump brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling,
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: and Excavation here on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: and 92.1 FM.
- 1:39:22Speaker 8: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:39:25Speaker 8: the best used football coverage.
- 1:39:27Speaker 11: Here's O.C.
- 1:39:28Speaker 8: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:39:32Speaker 11: All right, we're.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: Going to talk with Dan from Southern Steer Butcher here
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: in just a second.
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: That's where we're broadcasting from today.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: But right now, an injury report brought to you by
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: the Advocates Injury Attorneys. If you've been injured in any
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: kind of accident, doesn't have to be a car accident,
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: maybe you're just curious, do I have a case? They
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: can help me recoup some of the medical costs or
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: whatever from this injury. Call the Advocates, 801-355-5550, or visit utahadvocates.com.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: No official injury report for the Utah game because it's
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: not a Big 12 game, but what we are hearing
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: is that Keith Olsen should potentially be available. Ike Garcia
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: should potentially be available. So the rotation on the offensive line,
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: hopefully at full strength. For the Arizona-BYU game, because that is,
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: of course, a Big 12 game, Arizona will be missing
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: three players, Everett Rosa Jr., Dajon Hinton, Ezra Funa. Questionable
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: for their linebacker, Myron Robinson. Much more importantly, we got
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: news that Sione Moa tore his PCL and MCL, the
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: backup running back for BYU. And really, backup is not
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: fair to him. It's more of the one-two punch running back.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: With L.J.
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: Martin.
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: He's an incredibly talented player, a hard runner. He's going
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: to be out for a significant amount of time with
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: those knee injuries. Also, Rader Damuni, who got banged up
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: against Utah Tech, he is going to be out for this.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: One, as is Javessa Damuni.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: But Sione Mola and Rader Damuni, big losses for the Cougs,
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: and both of those guys expected to miss a significant
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: amount of time. Although, Rader Damuni's prognosis is was better
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: than they initially thought. They thought maybe he'd be out
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: until like November, could be sooner for Raider to Mooney.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: Also of note, Isaiah Glasker is probable for the Arizona game.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: And this is the first Big 12 game, big time
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: matchup of the year. That one will kick off at 1.30
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: Mountain Time in Provo this Saturday. So actually, if you're
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: a real hardcore football, college football junkie, and you have
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: access to tickets to both, you could go watch Arizona BYU,
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: and then jog up to Rice-Eckel Stadium and catch the
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: night game against Arkansas if you really want to pack
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: your day, which is something that I can see Dan
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: Gunther doing. He is the brains behind the operation here
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: at Southern Steer Butcher. 1705 North Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: We've got a big day of college football coming up.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: We've got a big weekend in the NFL coming up.
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: Feels like now is the time everyone should be stocking
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: up on the meats and getting everything stocked up for
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: the barbecue, the tailgate, whatever, Dan.
- 1:42:15Speaker 6: Yeah, so we just got a big old truck delivery here.
- 1:42:18Speaker 6: We got all the fresh meats just came in from
- 1:42:21Speaker 6: our distributor. We're ready to go for the weekend. Excited
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: to have folks come in and, you know, get their
- 1:42:28Speaker 6: tailgate material and have fun cooking it up. I mean,
- 1:42:32Speaker 6: definitely try those armadillo eggs.
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: If you want to impress, like, the guests that are
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: coming over to the tailgate or the guests that are
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: coming over to the barbecue, obviously just having good, solid,
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: great meat It's a good starting point. But you roll
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: out a couple of those armadillo eggs that they've never
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: had before. They've never seen something like that.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: I go, okay, what is this? Bacon wrapped what?
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: The armadillo eggs are a jalapeno popper wrapped in sausage
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: and then wrapped again in bacon.
- 1:43:03Speaker 6: That's it.
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: You got it. You cut that bad boy open.
- 1:43:06Speaker 6: That's a meal.
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: In and of itself.
- 1:43:09Speaker 6: It can be. We also have some really cool dips, too.
- 1:43:12Speaker 6: We home make our... Hot Honey Crack Chicken Dip. We'll
- 1:43:17Speaker 6: pull some of that out for you to try. It's really,
- 1:43:19Speaker 6: really good.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: By the way, we've got Devin Dampier Dishing with Dev
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: coming on, and we recorded that earlier in the week,
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: which means I'm going to be eating all the samples
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: in the store. If you want to catch some samples,
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: 1705 North Redwood Road, Saratoga Springs, you're running out of
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: time because as soon as I get some free time,
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: I'm demolishing every sample that they've got here in the store.
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: It smells good down here. The meat case, it looks
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: so excellent.
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: And if you know how to do it, if you
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: already know your way around the grill, this is the
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: perfect place for you to come. But also, if you're
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: kind of a beginner, come on in. Let Dan, Aubrey,
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: the crew tell you, all right, here's the meat.
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: This is how you prepare it.
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: I love that you offer not just great product but
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: advice on how to make it turn out the right way.
- 1:44:04Speaker 6: Yeah, funny you should say because last segment we had
- 1:44:06Speaker 6: a guy come in who earlier today bought a marinated
- 1:44:10Speaker 6: chicken Chicken breast.
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: I saw him come in.
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:44:13Speaker 6: And a sausage. And he went home and he cooked
- 1:44:15Speaker 6: it on his barbecue and he had to come back
- 1:44:17Speaker 6: and tell us how good it was.
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 1:44:21Speaker 6: Just that stuff, it's priceless, right?
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: And look, that's not the relationship you have with your
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: grocery store people. That is the relationship you're going to
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: have with Southern Steer Butcher. You've created this mom and
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: pop shop with a modern twist.
- 1:44:35Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly. I mean, you know, we call our team
- 1:44:37Speaker 6: members here culinary consultants because they really need to know
- 1:44:41Speaker 6: You know, where the cut of meat from, what portion
- 1:44:43Speaker 6: of the cattle it comes from, how to prepare it.
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: We often ask people when they come in and they're
- 1:44:49Speaker 6: picking up a piece of meat, well, how do you
- 1:44:51Speaker 6: plan to prepare it? And they'll describe it to us
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: and we'll try to accentuate things for them. We have
- 1:44:58Speaker 6: rubs and sauces that you can apply to some of
- 1:45:01Speaker 6: your barbecue or grilled meats that I think are amazing ingredients.
- 1:45:05Speaker 6: Our black garlic steak crust is phenomenal. I mean, you
- 1:45:10Speaker 6: just sprinkle a little bit of that on before you
- 1:45:12Speaker 6: sear your steak. And that brown, you know, crust on
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: the outside of your steak has such a wonderful flavor
- 1:45:19Speaker 6: to it. Like, those are the little nuances that when
- 1:45:22Speaker 6: you come into Southern Steer, you're going to get some
- 1:45:26Speaker 6: little bit of advice, you know, some culinary tips, if
- 1:45:30Speaker 6: you will, to help you do a better job when
- 1:45:33Speaker 6: you're on your grill.
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: I promise you it is worth the trip down here
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: to Southern Steer Butchers. 1705 North Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: Come down today during the show. We've got another hour
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: of the show. Come down after the show. Tell them
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: OC sent you. We start hour number three with Devin Dampier.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: Edition with Dev is next right here on your home
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: of the Utes, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:45:57Speaker 8: It's time to talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier. This
- 1:46:00Speaker 8: is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought
- 1:46:04Speaker 8: to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First
- 1:46:07Speaker 8: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's
- 1:46:11Speaker 8: OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your
- 1:46:14Speaker 8: home of the Utes.
- 1:46:15Speaker 11: And your home for football. ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: It's that time again on the Sean O'Connell show edition
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: with dev, our conversation with Q B one, who is
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: one to know as you're starting quarterback this year at
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: the university of Utah, big game coming up against Arkansas
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: this Saturday, Devin damp here brought to you by Culligan water,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling and America first credit union dev.
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: Welcome again.
- 1:46:47Speaker 9: How are you, sir? Do well, do well.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: All right, so 1-0.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: The best thing about being 1-0 is a chance to
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: go 2-0. No surprises, really. It was a dominant performance
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: against Idaho, but tell me how it felt. Tell me
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: how it was to get out there against a team
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: that didn't wear the same colors as you after camp
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: and all that.
- 1:47:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the best part about it is, again,
- 1:47:10Speaker 5: I've been preaching it the last two weeks, just everybody
- 1:47:14Speaker 5: being together for once and being on that same side,
- 1:47:17Speaker 5: but honestly, offensive-wise, I was I was pretty excited how
- 1:47:21Speaker 5: we came out. I feel like you look at a
- 1:47:24Speaker 5: couple other teams during week one and their offense didn't
- 1:47:27Speaker 5: look like they came out prepared. There were some tweaks
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: they had to make by halftime. I feel like we
- 1:47:33Speaker 5: kind of came out on all cylinders. I was just
- 1:47:35Speaker 5: proud of our preparation.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: How did it feel getting hit for real? Because one thing,
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: you don't shy away from it, Dev. There's a lot
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: of people, a lot of us watching just like, oh,
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: don't take that hit. Oh, Dev, don't get hit so much. Dev,
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: just step out of bounds. But you're not shy about it.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: You're a football player. How did it feel to get
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: hit for real? Because obviously they kind of bubble wrap
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: you for the last seven or eight months.
- 1:47:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I definitely felt the first one. And then after that,
- 1:48:01Speaker 5: I was good. But yeah, the first one, I think
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: I threw a ball and I got smacked. But I
- 1:48:07Speaker 5: was like, all right, but. I think it was Layshawn's touchdown.
- 1:48:11Speaker 5: That was the one, yeah. I got, yeah, yeah. But
- 1:48:14Speaker 5: you're all right. I'm good, I'm good.
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: Do you i mean do you kind of like that
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: does it feel like all right now it's football again
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: because i got you know i got tackled i got
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: hit a little bit and and it's it's a real
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: game is that wake you up somewhat yeah it puts.
- 1:48:30Speaker 9: Me in that mode like all right but we're here
- 1:48:33Speaker 9: We're here. We're playing.
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: So, self-scout. You've seen the film now. Obviously, you played
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: the game itself. Give me a grade for Devin Dampier.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: How do you feel like you did first time out?
- 1:48:46Speaker 9: I would say like a B.
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:48:49Speaker 9: B plus.
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:48:52Speaker 9: I would put myself around there.
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: Okay. Elaborate for me if you don't mind. Like.
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: What would have been an A? Why wasn't it an A?
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: We're nitpicking like everyone else is. So tell me what
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: you wanted to see better from yourself looking back at
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: it or whatever.
- 1:49:09Speaker 5: Well, protection-wise, I hope I helped myself without getting hit more.
- 1:49:13Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:49:15Speaker 5: I prefer to not get hit every time I throw
- 1:49:17Speaker 5: the ball because it's from me not telling the line
- 1:49:20Speaker 5: to go block him and stuff like that.
- 1:49:21Speaker 9: I don't know. There's always every game you're like, oh,
- 1:49:26Speaker 9: I could have done this slightly better. Of course.
- 1:49:28Speaker 5: This is how I feel about every single play. I'm like,
- 1:49:30Speaker 5: all right, I could have probably did this and we
- 1:49:32Speaker 5: would have did a little bit better.
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: A really, really solid stat line, obviously. 13 of 18, 176.
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: Almost 10 yards of completion. That's a nice number. Let's
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: keep it up there all year, right? Three touchdowns, no interceptions.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: Running the ball, six carries for 31 yards. I don't
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: have it in front of me how many of those
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: were designed and how many you actually just had to
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: kind of pull the ball down and scoot, but felt
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: like an even split.
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: Maybe. Is that accurate?
- 1:50:00Speaker 5: Speaker 2 I'd probably say I got a lot more
- 1:50:04Speaker 5: off scramble.
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: Design Speaker 3 You guys, because I mean, partially because
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: it was Idaho, partially because you jumped out to a
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: big lead and got to run the 10 different guys
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: got to run the ball in this game. And I
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: know that's not going to be the norm, but we've
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: been talking about it all off season long. How you
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: got all these weapons and you got to spread the
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: ball around and you got to keep everybody happy. What
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: was the vibe at halftime and then in the locker
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: room after the game? Because a lot of the skilled guys,
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: a lot of these guys who've been putting in this
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: work did get the reward of actually getting touches in
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: the game.
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: And plenty of you got touchdowns in the game.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: So probably one of those, those post game situations where
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: everyone feels pretty good.
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:50:45Speaker 5: It was definitely went into the game, you know, wanting
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: to get certain people, the ball for sure. Just especially way, Sean,
- 1:50:51Speaker 5: make sure way Sean's feeling good about running the ball,
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: especially for this week coming up. And then, I mean, yeah, just,
- 1:50:57Speaker 5: keeps trickling down. You know, we wanted everybody to get
- 1:50:59Speaker 5: opportunity to get in the game and feel that experience.
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: So it was due to us ones to make sure
- 1:51:05Speaker 5: we made that, that gap early. So even the defensive
- 1:51:09Speaker 5: side too, that they could get in as well.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: So a lot of, a lot of youth fans, right.
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: I've been watching this, this team for decades. And one
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: of the things that, that people always come into the
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: year and we, we've talked about this plenty as I
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: come in, Running game's going to be good. Hopefully get
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: really solid quarterback play. We think that's going to be
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: the case. And there's always this insecurity, this trepidation about
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: what the wide receiving core is going to look like.
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: There's been a lot of optimism and positivity around that position,
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: but people were still holding their breath. And then what
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: we saw from Braden, what we saw from Larry Simmons,
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: what you saw even in just a couple catches from
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: Creed Whittemore, Was that representative of kind of what you
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: expected it to be? Because you've been practicing with these guys.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: You've been telling us, don't worry. We've got plenty of
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: talent there. And it looked like, I mean, Idaho was
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: completely overmatched, but it looked like that kind of stuff
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: is going to translate even against Arkansas.
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:52:08Speaker 5: I think almost everyone that caught a ball had at
- 1:52:11Speaker 5: least like two catches almost.
- 1:52:12Speaker 9: So just.
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Mana and Noah Benny were the only ones who
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: got a catch. Okay. Yeah.
- 1:52:19Speaker 5: Yeah, besides that, I mean, we feel very comfortable just
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: not overloading one receiver or two receivers.
- 1:52:25Speaker 9: It felt like everybody is able to make their separation.
- 1:52:28Speaker 5: We're able to call stuff depending on who the defense
- 1:52:31Speaker 5: wants to give the opportunity to.
- 1:52:33Speaker 9: So, yeah, I thought those boys did a great job.
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: The number one topic of conversation between us and everyone
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: in the market has been what's the offensive line going
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: to look like? And we were told there's going to
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: be different combinations against Idaho. I don't know how many
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: guys actually played. It felt like 15 offensive linemen got
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: a few snaps, right, especially when you go down third
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: and fourth quarter. But even early, there were some different
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: combinations tested out. How did you feel about the protection?
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: How did you feel about the run blocking and just
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: the performance of that offensive line?
- 1:53:05Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, we're still trying to finalize that, obviously, just
- 1:53:10Speaker 5: with the different groups of last week. But, yeah, I mean,
- 1:53:14Speaker 5: I feel– I don't really recognize who's in and who's
- 1:53:16Speaker 5: not just because I.
- 1:53:18Speaker 9: Don't have alignment. I need to worry about when he's in.
- 1:53:20Speaker 5: I need to do something different or exotic. I feel
- 1:53:24Speaker 5: pretty comfortable with whoever my five is up there that
- 1:53:27Speaker 5: they're going to get that job done.
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: Devin Dampier is our guest here.
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: Dishing with Dev is brought to you by Culligan Water,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, and America First Credit Union.
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: Big win over Idaho. That's kind of what we expected.
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: And it was the short week. So what were Friday
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: and Saturday like for you having played on Thursday? Just
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: it's not quite the regular season schedule when you've got
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: that early game.
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: So how did you handle those next two days?
- 1:53:56Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:53:57Speaker 5: You know, my family is in town, so definitely with
- 1:53:59Speaker 5: them all all weekend. I definitely got to watch a
- 1:54:03Speaker 5: lot more college football than I ever have just because.
- 1:54:06Speaker 9: We know we're normally playing on one of those days. Right.
- 1:54:09Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:54:09Speaker 5: I don't get to watch all of the games, but yeah,
- 1:54:11Speaker 5: I was able to just literally sit down and watch
- 1:54:15Speaker 5: all the games play by.
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: That's nice. Yeah.
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: You get to be a civilian. You get to be like, well,
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: there's one of those games I want to talk about
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: for obvious reasons here coming up. Cause it's the big
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: story in college football, but I want to stay focused
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: on the Utes for now.
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: And now you turn the page.
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: And you've got to get ready for an SEC team
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: coming into Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: That doesn't happen very often.
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: Obviously, Florida came here a couple years back, but SEC
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: teams don't go west that often. And this is an
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: Arkansas team that has some real talent on it. Now,
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: I don't think they're top of the conference, top of
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: their conference, but it's a game you have to take
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: very seriously, and there's athletes, and it's definitely going to
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: look a lot different on the opposite side of things
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: than the Idaho Vandals did. What are you seeing from
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: Arkansas so far on film? What is something that you're
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: paying attention to? I think they're a very athletic team.
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: Just the height.
- 1:55:12Speaker 9: The weight, and the way they move around.
- 1:55:14Speaker 5: They're definitely a well-polished team. It's got to be whoever
- 1:55:20Speaker 5: steps their best foot forward and.
- 1:55:24Speaker 9: Closes out that game. I'm pretty excited to get to
- 1:55:27Speaker 9: go against Arkansas.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: Okay, there's a lot of conversation from the Arkansas side
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: of things about the kickoff time for this game. I
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: don't know if you've heard about any of this. Their
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: athletic director sent an email complaining that it was going
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: to be midnight by the time the second half started
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: for them. It's a 9.15 local time.
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: Their body clock will think it's 9 o'clock.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: Do you care what time a game kicks off from
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: a body clock perspective?
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: Because obviously.
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: You know, Pac-12 after dark, now Big 12 after dark.
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: Sometimes you're playing until midnight, one in the morning almost. Like,
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: do you even pay attention to that?
- 1:56:05Speaker 9: No, not really.
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: I mean, we normally try to adjust the schedule to
- 1:56:12Speaker 5: make us feel like the week is normal, I guess,
- 1:56:15Speaker 5: or the game will be normal. So I don't know
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: if they don't structure it like that, but we definitely
- 1:56:21Speaker 5: do everything we can to try to prepare our bodies
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: to be awake at that time, be ready to go.
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: I was actually, I'm quite surprised even like for an
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: athletic director should do those things. They should like campaign
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: for their team. Their coach was talking about it in
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: his media availability this week. Like, oh yeah, it's going
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: to be a late game for us. I'm like, this
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: is crazy. Why are you giving your players excuses? But
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: that's not my business. They can handle it however they
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: want to. So knowing that it is going to be
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: a little bit tougher on the opposite side this week, right?
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: More talented, bigger, faster, stronger.
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: Does it change how you guys are preparing, practicing, doing treatment,
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: anything like that? Does it change the Utah football routine
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: at all, knowing that it's Arkansas instead of Idaho?
- 1:57:08Speaker 9: No, I mean, you know, they run a different defense.
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: So, I mean, that's the most you're going to get
- 1:57:13Speaker 5: a different scheme from us. But, you know, besides that,
- 1:57:18Speaker 5: I think you go out there and you got to
- 1:57:21Speaker 5: be that guy when game day comes up.
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: They have.
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: One defensive end who's like, I've seen his name popping up,
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: Quincy Rhodes Jr. His name's been popping up on mock
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: drafts and things like that. When you know that there's
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: a guy like that, or maybe even a couple guys
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: like that on the opposite team, do you pay extra
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: attention in film trying to find their tendencies, trying to
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: find what their strengths are, how you can avoid those,
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: and things like that? Do you ever hone in on
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: individual players' in an opposition, in an opposing defense.
- 1:57:56Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:57:56Speaker 5: I mean, you definitely respect, uh, your opponent and, you know,
- 1:58:00Speaker 5: some of those guys are very talented as well. So, um,
- 1:58:03Speaker 5: you know, you just find, you just try to find
- 1:58:05Speaker 5: ways to slow them down and make our stuff work. So, uh,
- 1:58:10Speaker 5: you know, that's our thought process when, you know, you
- 1:58:12Speaker 5: have good players on the other side.
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: All right. We were the home of the Utes.
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: We've been talking more Michigan football this week than I
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: ever wanted to because of the controversy at the end
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: of that game. I imagine for you who got to
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: be a fan for once, seeing some of that was very,
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: very different, right?
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: Because these are your friends.
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: These are guys you were on the team with last year.
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: Like, J.J. caught the game winner.
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: What were your thoughts watching that whole thing unfold?
- 1:58:42Speaker 9: Man, well, I could tell Whit wasn't happy. I know
- 1:58:47Speaker 9: that face.
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: I have seen that man look a little displeased even
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: after wins in the past. That was the same wit
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: that you see after a loss, though. Yeah. In his mind,
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: that was not a victory.
- 1:59:00Speaker 9: The camera was on him on the sideline, and I
- 1:59:02Speaker 9: was like, he's not happy right now. Yeah, I mean, man, I.
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: Hope they come out the way they should against Oklahoma.
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: Can we block any Michigan phone numbers from contacting you
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: or bird or any, like, can we keep it from
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: the Michigan area code for being able to contact you?
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: Is that, is that something we could do? Because I
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: was talking about this and people are probably going to
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: be mad that I'm bringing this up when we're talking
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: to you, but like their quarterback completely underperformed and The
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: natural thing for me is to go, Oh, wait a second.
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: If they try to fix that problem, obviously they can't
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: do it this year, but they try to fix that problem.
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: They're going to go with somebody. They know like dev block,
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: block the Michigan numbers.
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:59:52Speaker 9: Don't go for it.
- 1:59:53Speaker 2: Don't go for it. Did you get any phone calls yet?
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: You heard it here first on the Sean O'Connell show
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: in week two, Devin has.
- 2:00:04Speaker 2: Not yet been contacted by the university of Michigan.
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: Big week also, as you guys take on Arkansas from
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: like a program history perspective, it is a ring of
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: honor inductee day, right? Eric Weddle, who is a former
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: teammate of mine, good friend of mine, a guy who's,
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: I think for a lot of people in Salt Lake City,
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: he is like the quintessential Ute. He's the guy they
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: think of when they think of Utah football in the
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: last 20 or so years.
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: What is your.
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: sense perception relationship like what is eric wettle for you
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: because you're gonna be there and watch as his name
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: goes up and is immortalized on the side of that
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: stadium yeah um you know i got.
- 2:00:45Speaker 5: To meet him uh twice um since i've been here
- 2:00:49Speaker 5: and just the conversations i've had with him he's been
- 2:00:53Speaker 5: like top knots respectful guy you know somebody you want
- 2:00:56Speaker 5: to be around for sure so i'm glad you know
- 2:00:58Speaker 5: the character adds on to what he does on the
- 2:01:00Speaker 5: field because Even I told him, I was like, I
- 2:01:02Speaker 5: knew you as the Madden safety.
- 2:01:04Speaker 9: Like I was picking the charges of what do we
- 2:01:06Speaker 9: play with you?
- 2:01:07Speaker 5: Like it was, it was kinda, he had that type
- 2:01:10Speaker 5: of aura, uh, just in NFL too. So I was
- 2:01:13Speaker 5: just like, yeah, like I have huge respect for you. Um,
- 2:01:16Speaker 5: you know, I'm happy to, I got to learn what
- 2:01:18Speaker 5: he did here, uh, being a Utah as well. So, uh, yeah, very,
- 2:01:22Speaker 5: very respected guy.
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: As, as Morgan showed you guys, any Eric Weddle film
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: in the Utah uniform, has that been part of the
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: week or anything?
- 2:01:30Speaker 9: No, we haven't got to see it yet. We haven't
- 2:01:31Speaker 9: got to see it yet.
- 2:01:32Speaker 2: Morgan coach Scali.
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: That's something you got to let these young bucks know
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: what your former teammate was all about. He was, I mean,
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: you got, you have some of these guys on the
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: roster right now. I mean, you're probably one of these
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: guys yourself. Like you could line Eric Whittle up and
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: have him play a couple of downs at quarterback. They
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: put him in the wildcat all the time, right?
- 2:01:53Speaker 2: He was the holder. He could throw passes. He could
- 2:01:55Speaker 2: catch passes. He could run for touchdowns.
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: And obviously he was an all American defender for his
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: entire time at the university of Utah. So you got
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: a couple of guys like that on the roster. Now,
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: when we're talking about, you know, the guys who are
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: great at their position and then the guys who are
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: just great at football, does that, does that carry a
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: different weight in the locker room?
- 2:02:15Speaker 2: When you're like, I could be anywhere. You can put
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: them in any position. It'd be great.
- 2:02:18Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I think, besides quarterback probably or O-line, like
- 2:02:26Speaker 5: if you can add, because Scali always talks about it,
- 2:02:29Speaker 5: if you can add value to yourself, if you can
- 2:02:30Speaker 5: be a football guy and you could get placed anywhere
- 2:02:34Speaker 5: and honestly like be able to talk and do what
- 2:02:37Speaker 5: you need to do, like that's what's going to get
- 2:02:39Speaker 5: you to the next level because, you know, everyone's looking
- 2:02:42Speaker 5: for someone to be more valuable than just playing their position.
- 2:02:45Speaker 9: So it's definitely preaching.
- 2:02:47Speaker 5: It's good to know that, you know, your guys are,
- 2:02:50Speaker 5: they're so football into it that they're able to do
- 2:02:53Speaker 5: that and step up to different positions.
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: Uh, is there anyone, cause everyone kind of got a
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: little bit of love offensively in this game, in this
- 2:03:01Speaker 1: game against Idaho. Is there anyone that you're like, all right,
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: let's get him the ball a little bit more against Arkansas.
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: Is there anyone that you, you want to see, you know,
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: Mack G who we're going to be talking to also
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: this week, uh, design a couple of touches for, so
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: that you can, the rest of us can see what
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: they've been doing.
- 2:03:19Speaker 5: Um, Man, I mean, obviously the receiver core, I want
- 2:03:25Speaker 5: them to be able to shine, you know, against anybody
- 2:03:27Speaker 5: we play against. I don't want it to just be
- 2:03:28Speaker 5: an Idaho fluke. You know, I want those guys to
- 2:03:31Speaker 5: shine any time we need them. And I think Wayshawn's
- 2:03:35Speaker 5: pretty passionate about getting to his 100 yards this game, too.
- 2:03:38Speaker 9: So you should be able to see that from him.
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: It was interesting, Wayshawn, in the post-practice media availability this week,
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: you know, he was praised for not only making an
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: impact in the run game, which... We expect him to
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: every week, but he was obviously valuable catching passes as well.
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: Two touchdown catches in that game. And he kind of
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: laughed and said, that's just a little bit of what
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: I can do in the passing game. You're going to
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: see a lot more. He's hinting at, you know, more
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: way Sean as a pass catcher. Is that something you
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: guys expect as the season wages on?
- 2:04:12Speaker 5: Yeah, no, for sure. We expect waste on the, You know,
- 2:04:16Speaker 5: it's just the matchup things. You know, normally they want
- 2:04:19Speaker 5: linebackers to guard running backs. And, you know, for us,
- 2:04:22Speaker 5: that's like, wait, Sean, do what you do, because I
- 2:04:25Speaker 5: don't think I wouldn't take any linebacker over guard you.
- 2:04:28Speaker 9: So, you know, normally you can get in those type
- 2:04:30Speaker 9: of things or even.
- 2:04:32Speaker 5: Yeah, he's he was a big check down piece this
- 2:04:35Speaker 5: last game where I'm able to give him a check down.
- 2:04:37Speaker 5: He takes it for eight, 10 yards like that's huge
- 2:04:39Speaker 5: for an offensive play.
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: You and bird, we've talked a lot about this, the
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: unique nature of your relationship, the fact that you seem
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: happy to share the ball and happy to share the
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: position a little bit. He played great. He had a
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: big impact on this game. You played great, had a
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: huge impact on this game. Tell me what, you know,
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: how bird graded out, how you guys evaluated each other
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: and how you're pushing each other to get better after
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: now live action.
- 2:05:08Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:05:09Speaker 5: Um, Yeah, so Bird's like the playmaker. He's the playmaker
- 2:05:13Speaker 5: in our offense. So he's trying to find the ways
- 2:05:17Speaker 5: to continue to get better at the playmaker stuff we
- 2:05:22Speaker 5: put him into, but also developing as a quarterback too. So,
- 2:05:27Speaker 5: you know, I give him kudos for being able to
- 2:05:29Speaker 5: handle both of those at the same time because that's
- 2:05:32Speaker 5: hard to do, especially in college. So, yeah, just the
- 2:05:35Speaker 5: type of playmaker he is, though, we definitely try to,
- 2:05:39Speaker 5: get him on the field as much as possible and
- 2:05:40Speaker 5: make sure he's touching the ball.
- 2:05:42Speaker 2: He had that one throw rolling to his right.
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: He's left-handed and beautiful, accurate pass kind of, you know,
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: twist the body. It went a little bit viral, not
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: like crazy viral, but people were talking about that throw.
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: When something like that happens, when you're on the sideline
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: and you see that pass, and then of course you're
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: in the film room and you see that, I mean,
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: that's a, it's a special play.
- 2:06:05Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:06:06Speaker 2: What was your reaction in the moment? And then, you know,
- 2:06:09Speaker 2: the conversation after.
- 2:06:10Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:06:11Speaker 5: It's, it's funny that like, that's just something, you know, we,
- 2:06:14Speaker 5: we do daily practice. Like we practice that coach Gundy
- 2:06:18Speaker 5: has us do that throw like almost every day. So like,
- 2:06:22Speaker 5: even for him, like we thought it was just like
- 2:06:24Speaker 5: a normal throw. Like we were just like, Oh yeah,
- 2:06:26Speaker 5: we do that. And then for the public to see it,
- 2:06:29Speaker 5: we're like, ah, not that. So, but yeah, it was, uh,
- 2:06:34Speaker 5: it was cool to see him make that throw. That's,
- 2:06:36Speaker 5: It's definitely a unique throw in the situation, and he
- 2:06:39Speaker 5: made the best of it for sure.
- 2:06:44Speaker 2: Big win over Idaho.
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: Everyone in the Big 12 that played kind of lesser
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: competition handled that lesser competition. And we were joking when
- 2:06:52Speaker 1: you walked in about how already the rivalry is in
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: full swing, right?
- 2:06:56Speaker 2: Like being a fan and being able to watch.
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: College football this weekend, did you watch, I don't know,
- 2:07:02Speaker 1: like Texas Tech extra close?
- 2:07:04Speaker 2: Did you watch BYU extra close?
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: Did you select the games that you were going to
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: watch based on teams you're going to be playing or
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: just who you were curious about? How did you choose
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: your viewership this weekend as a fan? Yeah, I think
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: I had three games going at once.
- 2:07:21Speaker 2: Nice.
- 2:07:22Speaker 9: So on three different screens to lose this. I had
- 2:07:27Speaker 9: at least. The game, I knew that was going to
- 2:07:30Speaker 9: be a good game.
- 2:07:31Speaker 5: I had that in the middle, and then I had, like,
- 2:07:33Speaker 5: the curiosities just kind of switching between the other ones
- 2:07:36Speaker 5: of who I felt like watching at the time and
- 2:07:40Speaker 5: whose score was a little bit closer and stuff like that. But, yeah,
- 2:07:44Speaker 5: I feel like I watched probably every single game that
- 2:07:47Speaker 5: was played.
- 2:07:48Speaker 2: Did anybody in the Big 12, did anything, like, stick
- 2:07:51Speaker 2: out for you?
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: Was there anything that you're like, oh, okay, I didn't
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: know about that team looking that good or they didn't
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: look as good as I thought they would?
- 2:07:58Speaker 2: There's, you know, mixed results. I thought you played on
- 2:08:02Speaker 2: the same night.
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: So we could watch the Colorado game, Colorado beat in
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: Georgia tech on that block field goal. That was that
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: surprised me because Georgia tech was a really physical team
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: last year. I don't think Colorado is going to be
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: able to keep pace with that. That was a good
- 2:08:14Speaker 1: win for the conference. Anything else like from at least
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: a big 12 perspective, jump out at you this week.
- 2:08:20Speaker 5: Um, I mean, not in a disrespectful way. I just
- 2:08:24Speaker 5: expected more out of Oklahoma state. Just the way that
- 2:08:27Speaker 5: was talked about. I was definitely expecting a little bit more.
- 2:08:30Speaker 1: I think all of us were, and I, we were
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: skeptical that, you know, everyone was like, Oh, this is
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: the team. Uh, drew mess to maker respect to him.
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: Cause we all love guys that come from like a
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: slightly lower level.
- 2:08:43Speaker 3: Sure.
- 2:08:44Speaker 9: I came that same way.
- 2:08:45Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: Right. Like I, I know there's a lot of really
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: good guys, uh, that got under-recruited out of high school
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: and stuff. People were talking about Drew Mestemaker like he's
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: the best quarterback in the Big 12 conference now.
- 2:08:56Speaker 2: And we've kind of been like, well, hold on a minute.
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: There's a bunch of guys that are already a little
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: bit more proven than that. But he didn't have his
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: best day. They didn't have their best day. 24-10 loss
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: for Oklahoma State.
- 2:09:08Speaker 9: Okay.
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: I got mad about the Baylor game because that's Big
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: 12 versus SEC.
- 2:09:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:09:15Speaker 2: I love Dave Aranda. Dave Aranda.
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: went for the win instead of playing for overtime. I
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: know that that's something you got to do. You got
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: to make that decision as a head coach. They get stopped.
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: Beautiful tackle at the goal line by an Auburn defender.
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: They get stopped just short. And I guess you got
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: to live with that because one person executed better than
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: you executed. But I wanted to see that game go
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: to overtime. I thought that Baylor was going to be
- 2:09:41Speaker 1: able to win it. You're the starting quarterback.
- 2:09:45Speaker 2: Your coach is like, We're going to play for overtime,
- 2:09:48Speaker 2: or we're going to go for the win right now.
- 2:09:49Speaker 2: What do you prefer?
- 2:09:51Speaker 9: I would have went for the win, too.
- 2:09:54Speaker 5: I think it was the right call. I honestly think
- 2:09:57Speaker 5: he was open, too. I think the quarterback left it
- 2:10:00Speaker 5: behind him just slightly. He couldn't really get in position
- 2:10:06Speaker 5: to at least run in there. That's a good tackle.
- 2:10:10Speaker 5: That's a good way to make up him being.
- 2:10:13Speaker 9: Open, too.
- 2:10:14Speaker 5: There's something about I trust myself to get that situation
- 2:10:19Speaker 5: done when it comes to winning that game.
- 2:10:22Speaker 2: Even as I ask that question, I'm like, why am
- 2:10:23Speaker 2: I asking this question? Of course, we know Dev well
- 2:10:26Speaker 2: enough now to be like, he wants to be aggressive.
- 2:10:28Speaker 9: That's why we let the coaches make the decisions.
- 2:10:30Speaker 2: He wants to go for the win.
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that one I was like, dang, Baylor, we needed
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: that one for the Big 12 conference. But now you
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: roll forward, week two, Arkansas, and now it'll be Utah
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: with a win over an SEC team. Do you feel
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: any kind of, any certain type of way about the
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: fact that it is an SEC squad? Is there any,
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: we want to prove to people that, you know, the
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: Big 12 and the SEC are at least on equal
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: footing here?
- 2:11:03Speaker 5: I mean, conference-wise, no. But, I mean, just us as
- 2:11:07Speaker 5: a team, our goal is to go undefeated. So this
- 2:11:12Speaker 5: is just the next game that's in our way of
- 2:11:15Speaker 5: doing that. So this is the game that we just.
- 2:11:18Speaker 5: We've got to do what we've got to do to
- 2:11:20Speaker 5: make sure we're putting ourselves in the best position to
- 2:11:22Speaker 5: make playoffs.
- 2:11:23Speaker 2: We've talked about this before with Devin Dampier.
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: QB1, Dishing with Devin, brought to you by Culligan Water,
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, and America First Credit Union.
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: A lot of people are excited this week NFL kicks off.
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: The NFL, you watch players rather than teams.
- 2:11:39Speaker 2: Yep. Kind of weird.
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: It's kind of weird you don't have an NFL team.
- 2:11:46Speaker 2: I do.
- 2:11:47Speaker 5: It's hard because I was born in Minnesota, so I
- 2:11:51Speaker 5: was somewhat raised around the Vikings.
- 2:11:53Speaker 9: Then I went to Arizona. Then Kyler Murray came.
- 2:11:56Speaker 5: Then I became a Cardinal fan. You get the Lamars.
- 2:12:01Speaker 5: You get the Mahomes. You get the Baker Mayfields. I
- 2:12:05Speaker 5: grew up watching Aaron Rodgers. There's so many different players
- 2:12:10Speaker 5: I respect to a level where I'm like, I can
- 2:12:14Speaker 5: never just pick a team because players motivate me.
- 2:12:16Speaker 2: To watch, watch the game. I think we got to
- 2:12:19Speaker 2: the bottom of it because.
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: The Vikings and the Cardinals being the two teams that
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: you can attach yourself to two teams that have.
- 2:12:26Speaker 2: Never really won anything. So that, that might be the problem.
- 2:12:29Speaker 9: Hey, they were solid when they had Randy Moss.
- 2:12:33Speaker 2: They've been good.
- 2:12:33Speaker 1: They've been almost at AP, the Vikings.
- 2:12:36Speaker 2: They've been Oh, so close. The Vikings many, many, many times. Yeah.
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: But they've never actually won Superbowl. So I get it.
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: And Arizona, you know, that's its own animal.
- 2:12:46Speaker 9: For sure.
- 2:12:47Speaker 2: I get it.
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: Now I realize why. The team allegiance has never treated
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: you kindly. So now you're just attached to players.
- 2:12:55Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 2:12:57Speaker 9: We can go with that. We can go with that.
- 2:13:01Speaker 1: It's always great having you come in. I appreciate you
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: giving us time.
- 2:13:05Speaker 2: You're healthy. You feel good. Everything's right.
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: Just a final message for Utah fans ahead of an
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: Arkansas game.
- 2:13:11Speaker 2: Rice Eccles. For real, for real, night game, we expect
- 2:13:15Speaker 2: the atmosphere to be rocking.
- 2:13:17Speaker 5: Yeah, because, I mean, even other teams say when they
- 2:13:22Speaker 5: play at Utah and it's dark outside, it's the truth.
- 2:13:25Speaker 9: So fans, bring it.
- 2:13:27Speaker 2: Do you know what the uniform combination is yet?
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: Because you guys, you get to help pick it, right?
- 2:13:32Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a red out, isn't it?
- 2:13:34Speaker 2: Is that the plan?
- 2:13:35Speaker 9: I'm pretty sure it's a red out.
- 2:13:35Speaker 2: I think it is the plan. No, you're absolutely right.
- 2:13:38Speaker 1: I think that is the plan because we were talking
- 2:13:40Speaker 1: about that earlier in the summer when When they sent out,
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: they announced sort of the fan schedule or whatever. I
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: think the red out, because I was like, that's how
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: Weddle would want it.
- 2:13:53Speaker 2: And that's his day.
- 2:13:54Speaker 9: Yeah, red out. We should be wearing red. I couldn't
- 2:13:57Speaker 9: imagine we have red out now.
- 2:13:59Speaker 2: Have you talked to the younger Weddle yet?
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: Have you had any contact with Gage, who, of course,
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: is being recruited by everybody in the country?
- 2:14:07Speaker 9: Yeah, Gage made it out. He had his visit through us,
- 2:14:11Speaker 9: and yeah, he was able to. I forget what time
- 2:14:14Speaker 9: period it was, but, yeah, just in our quarterback meeting.
- 2:14:17Speaker 9: He was chilling. We all showed up to him, and
- 2:14:19Speaker 9: then he got to watch us practice.
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: He also plays the quarterback position, so he probably is
- 2:14:24Speaker 1: watching guys like you because dual threat for sure.
- 2:14:28Speaker 2: He's an athlete like you are.
- 2:14:29Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah. I'm excited for Gage.
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: Hopefully we can get him in a Utah uniform someday.
- 2:14:37Speaker 2: Dev, great seeing you, man. Good luck. Stay healthy. Have
- 2:14:40Speaker 2: a great game. We'll see you Saturday night.
- 2:14:41Speaker 9: Appreciate it.
- 2:14:42Speaker 1: David Dampier, QB number one, edition with Dev, brought to
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: you by Culligan Water, Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, and
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: America First Credit Union, every single week here on the
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: Lots left to get to. Don't go anywhere. ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:14:58Speaker 2: The world is, the world is not.
- 2:15:00Speaker 8: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:15:07Speaker 8: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:15:18Speaker 14: All right, marching toward the end of the Sean O'Connell
- 2:15:22Speaker 14: Show today, we are at Southern Steer Butcher, 1705 North
- 2:15:25Speaker 14: Redwood Road, Saratoga Springs in Utah.
- 2:15:28Speaker 1: And if I sound a little weepy, it's because Dan
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: has gifted me with something we've been talking about all day.
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: I have in my hands, which you can't see because
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: we're not on camera today, I have in my hands
- 2:15:40Speaker 1: one of the legendary armadillo eggs of Southern Steer.
- 2:15:42Speaker 2: Dan, thank you for the hookup. I appreciate you very,
- 2:15:45Speaker 2: very much.
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: This thing is a jalapeno popper wrapped in sausage.
- 2:15:52Speaker 2: And then wrapped in bacon.
- 2:15:54Speaker 6: That's it? Yeah.
- 2:15:56Speaker 2: I can't wait to crack into this thing. Yeah.
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: And before we get out of here, we're going to
- 2:16:01Speaker 1: make sure we check out. I had more samples of
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: the steak tips. I hope you don't have a hard
- 2:16:07Speaker 1: policy on how many samples people are supposed to take.
- 2:16:09Speaker 6: Yeah, no, we're good.
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: I've definitely violated that policy today.
- 2:16:13Speaker 2: But over there on the sample table, you've got some
- 2:16:15Speaker 2: of the other stuff, right?
- 2:16:16Speaker 1: You've got the olive oils and the balsamics and the
- 2:16:19Speaker 1: bread to dip it in. You've got some exotic honeys
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: over there. You really have kind of like a gourmet
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: food shop, not just a butcher.
- 2:16:27Speaker 6: Yeah, the balsamics and the olive oil are from a
- 2:16:30Speaker 6: local Utah company as well as the Amarita's honey. You know,
- 2:16:34Speaker 6: like I said, my wife, Aubrey, who's here in the
- 2:16:36Speaker 6: store today with us, she's done a terrific job, you know,
- 2:16:40Speaker 6: sourcing local vendors, going to farmers markets and picking out really,
- 2:16:44Speaker 6: you know, great stuff that we can, you know, showcase
- 2:16:47Speaker 6: here in the store. You know, we even have some,
- 2:16:50Speaker 6: you know, hot sauces that are locally produced that, you know,
- 2:16:54Speaker 6: have some kind of unique flavors to them. You know,
- 2:16:58Speaker 6: pineapple scotch bonnet. You name it.
- 2:17:04Speaker 2: You also have your daily rewards program. I see the
- 2:17:06Speaker 2: video board, the menu over there.
- 2:17:08Speaker 1: You've got discounts on different things Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: all the way through Friday.
- 2:17:13Speaker 13: Right.
- 2:17:14Speaker 6: Every day of the week you come in, you know,
- 2:17:16Speaker 6: we put your phone number in the system. You know,
- 2:17:19Speaker 6: when you come in every day there is a discounted special.
- 2:17:23Speaker 6: You know, tomorrow's a great day, especially for weekends, because
- 2:17:26Speaker 6: all of our cool appetizers, bacon-wrapped shrimp, stuffed mushrooms, our
- 2:17:30Speaker 6: jalapeno poppers, even our jerky. We didn't even talk about
- 2:17:34Speaker 6: our jerky.
- 2:17:34Speaker 2: We haven't talked about the jerky. I saw that over
- 2:17:36Speaker 2: in the butcher case also, yeah.
- 2:17:37Speaker 6: Yeah, so our jerky comes from the same smokehouse that
- 2:17:43Speaker 6: provides their jerky to Buc-ee's. If you've ever been back
- 2:17:45Speaker 6: east on a road trip, you stop at a Bucky's
- 2:17:47Speaker 6: rest stop, they've got a wall of jerky. They're famous
- 2:17:51Speaker 6: for their jerky. Southern Steer has been really forward-thinking in
- 2:17:57Speaker 6: terms of sourcing their products, right? The cattle and pork
- 2:18:01Speaker 6: and all that. But we also now get our jerky
- 2:18:04Speaker 6: from the same exact smokehouse and production facility as the
- 2:18:08Speaker 6: Bucky's rest stops do. So Our jerky's phenomenal. Come in
- 2:18:11Speaker 6: and try it. We'll even give you a free piece
- 2:18:13Speaker 6: of jerky for sure.
- 2:18:14Speaker 1: I saw, and I was ogling everything in the store
- 2:18:17Speaker 1: while we played the Devin Dampier interview, the Dishing with
- 2:18:20Speaker 1: Deb segment, and I went and took a gander inside
- 2:18:24Speaker 1: the dry-aged locker, and you got some tomahawks in there.
- 2:18:27Speaker 2: It looks like maybe some prime ribs or whatever in there.
- 2:18:30Speaker 2: And is that tallow? They're slathered with tallow?
- 2:18:32Speaker 6: Yeah, it's funny. Basically, when you dry-age meat, you want
- 2:18:35Speaker 6: to basically take– you know, a whiskey or a bourbon.
- 2:18:39Speaker 6: And you just kind of coat the outside basically to,
- 2:18:42Speaker 6: you know, sterilize anything that might be on the meat.
- 2:18:45Speaker 6: And then you coat it in tallow and you hang
- 2:18:48Speaker 6: it in this, basically it's a locker or, you know,
- 2:18:51Speaker 6: some butchers have like entire rooms that are dry age room,
- 2:18:55Speaker 6: but it's humidified or humidity controlled and temperature controlled so
- 2:18:59Speaker 6: that it basically will slowly dry age the meat. And
- 2:19:04Speaker 6: it basically takes that, meat flavor and accentuates it and
- 2:19:10Speaker 6: allows it to tenderize over time so if.
- 2:19:13Speaker 1: You want a like expensive steakhouse quality steak they can
- 2:19:17Speaker 1: hook you up with that down here at southern steer
- 2:19:20Speaker 1: if you just want some dogs and some burgers you
- 2:19:22Speaker 1: can throw on the grill for a quick barbecue they
- 2:19:24Speaker 1: can take care of that everything in between on that
- 2:19:27Speaker 1: entire gourmet meat to just like let me get something
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: in my kids mouths for the family you really that
- 2:19:34Speaker 1: whole spectrum is covered down here When it comes to
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: Southern Steer Butcher, and it's all clean, hormone-free, antibiotics, like
- 2:19:41Speaker 1: all the chemicals that we're worried about going into people's bodies,
- 2:19:45Speaker 1: you guys get the meat from the cleanest, most ethical sources.
- 2:19:49Speaker 6: Yeah, you bet. If you've never tried a Wagyu hot dog,
- 2:19:52Speaker 6: that's another recommendation, right? I mean, you know, you get
- 2:19:55Speaker 6: your really good all-beef hot dogs that are terrific on
- 2:19:57Speaker 6: the grill, but a Wagyu hot dog is something completely different.
- 2:20:01Speaker 6: It's a melt-in-your-mouth type hot dog.
- 2:20:04Speaker 1: I saw our guy, our sales guy, Chad's sitting over there.
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: He's guarding his Wagyu steak that you gave him. I
- 2:20:11Speaker 1: might try and steal that before we get out of here.
- 2:20:14Speaker 1: Chad's always talking trash about the Seattle Seahawks and my
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: San Francisco 49ers. Big weekend coming up. Utah, BYU both
- 2:20:22Speaker 1: in action. Full slate returning in the NFL. Perfect time
- 2:20:26Speaker 1: to come down to Southern Steer, grab the meats for the.
- 2:20:28Speaker 2: Barbecue, right?
- 2:20:28Speaker 6: Yeah, go Utes. Let's go.
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: Let's go. You going to go to the game?
- 2:20:32Speaker 6: Yes, of course. Season ticket holder.
- 2:20:34Speaker 2: Of course.
- 2:20:35Speaker 6: My tailgate partner is roasting a razorback.
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: A pig, I guess.
- 2:20:39Speaker 6: Right?
- 2:20:40Speaker 2: Nice.
- 2:20:41Speaker 6: We're going to do it up for taking care of
- 2:20:43Speaker 6: the hogs.
- 2:20:44Speaker 2: I like that.
- 2:20:46Speaker 1: Before I leave, I'm going to have to find your
- 2:20:47Speaker 1: tailgate spot. We'll come on over.
- 2:20:50Speaker 2: I feel like it's important that I should sample everything.
- 2:20:53Speaker 2: Of course. You know what I mean? I've accepted that role,
- 2:20:55Speaker 2: even though nobody wanted to give it to me. I've
- 2:20:57Speaker 2: given it to myself. In all seriousness... 1705.
- 2:21:01Speaker 1: North Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs.
- 2:21:03Speaker 2: It's a really incredible shop.
- 2:21:05Speaker 1: It's the kind of place you want to come if
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: you're having a barbecue, if you're just looking for something
- 2:21:09Speaker 1: that you can throw in the air fryer on the
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: grill for dinner. They've got that covered as well. Sides, marinades, rubs, salsas.
- 2:21:18Speaker 1: They locally source a lot of their product. And, of course,
- 2:21:21Speaker 1: the meats are the main feature here. And that meat
- 2:21:23Speaker 1: case truly is a thing of beauty. So come down
- 2:21:26Speaker 1: to Southern Steer, and when you do, tell them OC
- 2:21:28Speaker 1: sent you. Dan, thanks for having us out here today.
- 2:21:30Speaker 6: Sean, it's been terrific. Thanks for coming. We really appreciate it.
- 2:21:34Speaker 6: We love being partners with you guys.
- 2:21:36Speaker 2: We love having you.
- 2:21:37Speaker 1: We're going to have one last segment where I'll give
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: away a pair of tickets to Weezer September 15th. One
- 2:21:44Speaker 1: more time, James. Oh, Dishing with Dev is going to
- 2:21:48Speaker 1: premiere right at the end of the show. The video
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: of Dishing with Dev, the YouTube feed, will come out.
- 2:21:55Speaker 2: In about 13 minutes.
- 2:21:57Speaker 1: One more segment, like I said, to give away some
- 2:21:59Speaker 1: Weezer tickets with a question. It's the Sean O'Connell Show
- 2:22:02Speaker 1: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:22:07Speaker 8: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:22:10Speaker 8: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:22:18Speaker 1: Closing out the Sean O'Connell Show here on ESPN 700
- 2:22:21Speaker 1: and 92.1 FM. Edition with Dev, the video portion. We'll
- 2:22:25Speaker 1: hit the YouTube here in about eight minutes. Final segment
- 2:22:29Speaker 1: of the show brought to you by our friends at
- 2:22:30Speaker 1: Advanced Window Products, 801-850-9100.
- 2:22:34Speaker 8: $ 2, 500.
- 2:22:38Speaker 2: Off, 10 windows or more. Oh, my gosh.
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: Dan just busted out some jalapeno poppers for us right
- 2:22:43Speaker 1: here as we close out the show.
- 2:22:45Speaker 3: Yes!
- 2:22:46Speaker 2: Southern Steer.
- 2:22:47Speaker 1: We've been at Southern Steer Butcher all day, 1705 North
- 2:22:51Speaker 1: Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs. Yes, it is like your
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: grandma and grandpa's butcher shop, but it's got a modern
- 2:22:57Speaker 1: twist on it. Mealtime combo, the butcher combo, the sampler combo.
- 2:23:01Speaker 2: All very affordable.
- 2:23:02Speaker 1: You can get three full meals for you and the
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: family for less than $ 60 with.
- 2:23:08Speaker 2: The mealtime combo.
- 2:23:09Speaker 1: The butcher combo, two pounds of ground beef, two pounds
- 2:23:12Speaker 1: of marinated chicken, two pounds of boneless pork chops, two
- 2:23:15Speaker 1: pounds of sirloin fillets. Man, I'm stocking up on the
- 2:23:20Speaker 1: meats before I get out of here. And they've treated
- 2:23:23Speaker 1: us really well. They're treating everyone who comes in really well.
- 2:23:26Speaker 1: It is the vibe that you're looking for. It is
- 2:23:28Speaker 1: the product that you're looking for. It is the kind
- 2:23:31Speaker 1: of place that you should be supporting as a local business,
- 2:23:34Speaker 1: and they pay attention to all the details so that
- 2:23:38Speaker 1: you can, if you're like a chef, they'll elevate your meals.
- 2:23:42Speaker 1: If you're not a chef, if you're someone who's just
- 2:23:45Speaker 1: looking for convenience and you're trying to find something that
- 2:23:48Speaker 1: I can get some healthy food into my family's bellies
- 2:23:51Speaker 1: without putting too much thought into it, they can take
- 2:23:53Speaker 1: care of that as well. Really, really great stuff down
- 2:23:56Speaker 1: here at Southern Steer Butcher. And the sides, the rubs,
- 2:24:00Speaker 1: the marinades, everything. They really have it all. I have
- 2:24:05Speaker 1: a pair of tickets to give away to the Weezer
- 2:24:07Speaker 1: concert at the Maverick Center. Two tickets on September 15th.
- 2:24:12Speaker 1: Utah-Arkansas on Saturday night at Rice Eccles Stadium. If you've
- 2:24:19Speaker 1: been paying attention to the Arkansas sphere of influence, the podcasters,
- 2:24:24Speaker 1: the broadcasters, the Arkansas radio. They're overlooking Utah, and a
- 2:24:29Speaker 1: lot of what they're talking about is the fact that
- 2:24:32Speaker 1: this team is not as physical as they're used to being,
- 2:24:36Speaker 1: is not as formidable on the offensive and defensive lines.
- 2:24:40Speaker 2: Okay, fine.
- 2:24:41Speaker 1: One thing that we noticed about Utah watching, and it
- 2:24:44Speaker 1: is only a small sample size, but this looks like
- 2:24:47Speaker 1: the best wide receiving core Utah's had in quite a while.
- 2:24:50Speaker 1: And With that, my question is, who led the Utes
- 2:24:55Speaker 1: in receiving yards in the season opener against Idaho?
- 2:25:00Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 2:25:01Speaker 1: Nice, easy question for you. Grab yourself a pair of
- 2:25:04Speaker 1: Weezer tickets. They're coming to the Maverick Center on September 15th.
- 2:25:12Speaker 1: We will see you out there.
- 2:25:13Speaker 2: At the tailgate.
- 2:25:13Speaker 1: The ESPN 700 tailgate will be live. Across the street
- 2:25:19Speaker 1: from the stadium, hopefully you can stop by, say hello.
- 2:25:22Speaker 1: We've got free admission to the Greek Festival if you
- 2:25:26Speaker 1: want to stop by down here at Southern Steer and
- 2:25:28Speaker 1: pick up a couple of tickets for that. That's going
- 2:25:32Speaker 1: on this weekend, September 11th, 12th, and 13th, so Friday
- 2:25:36Speaker 1: through Sunday, 50th annual Salt Lake City Greek Fest, by
- 2:25:40Speaker 1: the way. And we also have some of our Taffy
- 2:25:45Speaker 1: Town ESPN 700 shows. Ute-themed taffy. So we're really just
- 2:25:50Speaker 1: hooking it up all over the place. Dan and Aubrey
- 2:25:53Speaker 1: have been really great to us. Southern Steer has been
- 2:25:55Speaker 1: really great to us. Make sure you get down here
- 2:25:58Speaker 1: as soon as you can, and we will turn you
- 2:26:01Speaker 1: over to the drive with Spence Checketts here in just
- 2:26:03Speaker 1: a matter of moments. James, is Spence in studio today,
- 2:26:07Speaker 1: or is he on the road?
- 2:26:09Speaker 2: He is in studio. I don't think we'll be able
- 2:26:12Speaker 2: to do crosstalk, though. That's fine. We don't need to
- 2:26:15Speaker 2: do crosstalk. Spence gets to talk.
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: Has to talk to me too much during the week,
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: so he probably doesn't need to do it again today.
- 2:26:22Speaker 1: Tomorrow's show should be a lot of fun. We've got
- 2:26:24Speaker 1: some Coordinator's Corner coming your way. Obviously, we're going to
- 2:26:27Speaker 1: dive deep into the matchup with the University of Arkansas,
- 2:26:31Speaker 1: where the Razorbacks are good, where the Razorbacks are a
- 2:26:33Speaker 1: little bit more vulnerable, and, of course, how the Utes
- 2:26:37Speaker 1: can build on the momentum from Week 1, because that
- 2:26:41Speaker 1: was a big offensive explosion.
- 2:26:43Speaker 2: But as we.
- 2:26:43Speaker 1: Talked about on Monday, as we talked about last Friday...
- 2:26:46Speaker 1: there are some things that you probably need to clean up.
- 2:26:49Speaker 1: There are some things that need to be workshopped just
- 2:26:52Speaker 1: a little bit for this Utah football team. We'll get
- 2:26:54Speaker 1: pretty specific with it as we give you three hours
- 2:26:58Speaker 1: of great radio tomorrow.
- 2:26:59Speaker 2: That will be the effort at least.
- 2:27:00Speaker 1: And then, of course, on Saturday, it is Utah versus
- 2:27:05Speaker 1: Arkansas and the induction of our friend, of the Utah
- 2:27:10Speaker 1: football legend, of the NFL football legend, Eric Weddle, into
- 2:27:13Speaker 1: the Utah football ring of honor. That feels like, I mean,
- 2:27:17Speaker 1: SEC team coming in, that's already special enough, but he
- 2:27:21Speaker 1: is everyone's favorite, right?
- 2:27:23Speaker 2: That's our guy.
- 2:27:24Speaker 1: So very much looking forward to having an opportunity to
- 2:27:27Speaker 1: honor Eric Weddle. He's the type of person, the type
- 2:27:30Speaker 1: of player that deserves it, but definitely also the type
- 2:27:33Speaker 1: of person that deserves it. So great weekend at Rice-Eccles
- 2:27:36Speaker 1: coming up.
- 2:27:37Speaker 4: And speaking of that, O.C., Utah football, that is, if
- 2:27:42Speaker 4: you missed the Morgan Scali Coaches show from this week
- 2:27:45Speaker 4: on Tuesday, there's, of course, the podcast on ESPN700Sports. com you
- 2:27:50Speaker 4: can check out. But we're also going to re-air it.
- 2:27:53Speaker 4: tonight at 6. We're going to try to re-air it
- 2:27:56Speaker 4: every week. It'll probably be on Wednesdays most weeks, but
- 2:28:00Speaker 4: because we had the Seahawks game last night, we're doing
- 2:28:02Speaker 4: it tonight on this Thursday.
- 2:28:05Speaker 2: So if you missed it, 6 o'clock tonight.
- 2:28:07Speaker 1: If you missed Dishing with Deb, that'll be available at ESPN700Sports. com
- 2:28:11Speaker 1: and on the ESPN700 app. And we'll do the same
- 2:28:15Speaker 1: thing with Coordinator's Corner after the show tomorrow. So we're
- 2:28:20Speaker 1: giving you the best Utah content during football season and beyond.
- 2:28:26Speaker 1: All right, we'll chat with you again tomorrow. Stay tuned
- 2:28:28Speaker 1: for the drive with Spence Checketts. One last time, the
- 2:28:31Speaker 1: address is 1705 North Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs. Tell Dan,
- 2:28:36Speaker 1: tell Aubrey, tell the whole crew you heard about it
- 2:28:38Speaker 1: on ESPN 700. Come down, stock up on your meats. Today,
- 2:28:42Speaker 1: the special is sausage, burgers, and hot dogs. Tomorrow, it's
- 2:28:47Speaker 1: all the sides, like the stuffed mushrooms, the jalapeno poppers.
- 2:28:50Speaker 2: And stuff like that.
- 2:28:51Speaker 1: So get yourself ready for the weekend with Southern Steer Butcher.
- 2:28:55Speaker 1: Thanks for listening to the Sean O'Connell Show. We'll do
- 2:28:57Speaker 1: it again tomorrow on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
