- 0:003 lifelong friends, 6 trusty balls and endless NFL ticks.
- 0:05Welcome to Three Guys 6 Balls NFL Podcast.
- 0:08Welcome to episode 16 of Three Guys 6 Balls.
- 0:10Today we have our third set of balls back on the show.
- 0:14Welcome back, Avery. We missed you last week.
- 0:16Thanks. It's good to be back.
- 0:18It's good to be back. Today we're going to pick up
- 0:21right where we left off from last time.
- 0:23We didn't have Avery last time, but we were talking about the
- 0:26possibility of having an Owen 17 team this season.
- 0:30Both Will and I decided that we don't think it's going to
- 0:32happen, but one of the teams that we thought could
- 0:34potentially do it that we didn't get a chance to talk about is
- 0:37the Tennessee Titans. And So what we're going to talk
- 0:39about to start off the show is specifically with the Tennessee
- 0:42Titans, what they've put around their rookie quarterback, Cam
- 0:45Ward. So for this guy's, let's talk
- 0:48about the Titans, what they have around Cam Ward.
- 0:49I you can talk about Cam Ward if you want to.
- 0:52I don't want to talk specifically about Cam Ward and
- 0:54how he's going to perform. I want to focus just on what is
- 0:58around him. So let's go ahead and start with
- 1:01Avery. What do you kind of see as some
- 1:03of the kind of the biggest factors that are around Cam Ward
- 1:07right now and how do you think that they're going that his
- 1:10supporting cast is going to perform this season?
- 1:13I'm excited. I mean, I think Cam Ward is the
- 1:15I mean, that's kind of the main thing everyone's looking at,
- 1:18especially if they're one of the few teams that could potentially
- 1:22go. Owen was 17.
- 1:24Now I really like Tyler Lockett. I know he had one of the least
- 1:28productive seasons in Seattle last year.
- 1:32And part of that might just be age.
- 1:34It might just be the, the scheme or the, you know, the personnel
- 1:37and everything, but I like him. In fact, the, the only reason I
- 1:42started liking him is because of what he does on the field, which
- 1:44is avoid being hit at all costs. This guy will just go down and
- 1:49I, I see that as OK, this guy, this guy's got a good head on
- 1:53his shoulders and he wants to keep it that way.
- 1:56I, I see it as this guy's, he's a smart dude.
- 1:59I think him and Ridley, but him especially, just with his
- 2:02expertise and just a little bit more of a tactical way of
- 2:06looking at the game. I think that'll be able to help
- 2:08Cam Ward. The Titans are the team that's
- 2:10closest to me. They're an hour away.
- 2:12No one's really a Tennessee Titans fan here.
- 2:15No one's really an NFL fan at all.
- 2:17I don't think I've even seen an NFL jersey.
- 2:19I've seen more Cowboys jerseys than Saints, Falcons and Titans
- 2:23jerseys here. But I'm going to go see one of
- 2:24the games. I'm really excited before they
- 2:26demolish Nissan Stadium. But I think the receiving corps
- 2:30is going to be fun to watch. Tyler Lockett, mainly just for
- 2:33the just the production that he can usually put in.
- 2:35I see him a little bit like a Ryan Switzer.
- 2:39Again, nobody knows who that is. Except me.
- 2:41I know. I know it's the only thing that
- 2:44I know about the NFL that other NFL fans don't if they, I mean,
- 2:48unless they've been around for a little while.
- 2:50But yeah, now I'm excited to see them more than anything.
- 2:52Well, do you know who Ryan Switzer is?
- 2:54No, of course not. I assume some small white guy
- 2:56who played slot receiver from some school.
- 2:58Probably BYU, Maybe North Carolina if I had to guess.
- 3:02Yes, at this point, I want you to keep going.
- 3:06I'm like I played for the Cowboys for a little bit.
- 3:08Maybe the Raiders. I don't know.
- 3:10I don't know. I don't know.
- 3:11Who knows? I sounded like you knew exactly
- 3:13we. Were typically think a Ryan
- 3:16Switzer does sound like a small, fast, shifty white guy.
- 3:19I am just using general Avery context clues to put all of that
- 3:23together. I'm not necessarily an enigma
- 3:27here. I don't recognize the name
- 3:30enough to know he didn't play at Oregon because that was that
- 3:33would be the other guess. But Switzer BYU is a pretty good
- 3:36guess. That Ryan Switzer specifically,
- 3:39He probably served a mission in Utah specifically, if I had to
- 3:43guess, just given the name, probably sandy brown hair,
- 3:49probably about 5 foot 859 shredded.
- 3:52But because he's a small guy, one of those, it's really lean
- 3:55muscle, but it looks, it looks powerful.
- 3:58He looks a little bit like Brock Purdy.
- 4:00This guy up real quick here, Ryan Switzer, you said?
- 4:03Ryan Switzer, Ryan. Switzer.
- 4:05Like Switzerland, but -1 he might be like an offensive
- 4:09coordinator. Former wide receiver man I5 foot
- 4:138. I I hit this guy right?
- 4:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:16I. Think he plays man will the
- 4:18mentalist over here. No joke.
- 4:21Yeah, OK, this is fun. Good for him.
- 4:23Glad that he existed. Yeah, he played three seasons in
- 4:29the NFL. He had a total of 321 receiving
- 4:32yards and one touchdown. That's bad.
- 4:36I don't he just wasn't used. He just wasn't used right,
- 4:39that's all. Or he was just bad possibility.
- 4:44No. I'd like to go back to silent
- 4:45walking here for a second and this should go down as a winner
- 4:48spreadsheet for me. Although it's not something
- 4:50technically called, it's something I said would work
- 4:52perfectly. They have paired that.
- 4:54They being the Titans have paired Xavier Restrepo up with
- 4:57Tyler Lockett. And I do believe I said that
- 5:00specifically, hey, if you pair him up, if you pair Restrepo up
- 5:03because he catches the ball, but his yard drops, they catch are
- 5:07like 12. Same thing with Tyler Lockett.
- 5:09His yard drops they catch are very minimal.
- 5:10But again, like he said, he saves himself.
- 5:13He doesn't get it. He doesn't get hurt.
- 5:15He makes the catch and goes down and he lives to play another
- 5:19down. And now they've got, I was just
- 5:21doing a quick count. They've got 20.
- 5:23They again being the Titans have 20 new players on their offense,
- 5:28whether required through free agency or the draft.
- 5:31And again, this is obviously not starters.
- 5:32It's through their entire their entire depth chart currently
- 5:36there. And again again, cuts have not
- 5:37been made yet, but right now in the off season, they have 20 new
- 5:41players on their offensive roster listed on the current
- 5:44depth chart. That is so many new pieces
- 5:47around Kenward. Kenward is one of those 20, but
- 5:49they've got new receivers all over the place just trying to do
- 5:53anything because obviously last year it didn't work.
- 5:56And so I like, I'm excited to see what the Titans can do this
- 5:59year. I have 0 faith in them.
- 6:01I mean, I'm thinking three wins Max as a ceiling.
- 6:04But I'm I'm excited to see what's going to happen.
- 6:06You know, Speaking of the amount of wins, their schedule, it's
- 6:10really not that tough of a schedule.
- 6:11So they start off at the Broncos and then they are at home
- 6:15against the Rams. So those are two tough games to
- 6:17start the season. Then they've got the Colts, the
- 6:19Texans, Cardinals, Raiders, Patriots, Colts, Chargers, A by
- 6:23Texans, Seahawks, Jags, Browns, 49ers, Chiefs, Saints and Jags.
- 6:28So there's some very winnable games in there.
- 6:30I mean, they only won three games last year with a very
- 6:33winnable schedule as well. Your two quarterbacks were Will
- 6:36Levis and Mason Rudolph. Yes, right, you didn't.
- 6:39Your ceiling for quarterbacks is not very high and we truly have
- 6:43no idea what the ceiling is going to be for for Cam Moore at
- 6:45this point, but the expectation is high.
- 6:48Let me ask you guys, Will Levis is kind of being held captive
- 6:52right now. He's got like $1,000,000
- 6:54contract for just one more year and he's they're not going to
- 6:57release him or trade him because it's like he's basically free to
- 7:00keep. What do you guys think?
- 7:02The chances are that Will Levis at any point in time, minus just
- 7:07injury, takes over for Cam Ward. Even if just for like, whether
- 7:11it's for a few games or even like to start the second-half or
- 7:15something, is kind of like a, hey, we're going to test someone
- 7:18out, light a fire under your butt for a bit.
- 7:21What do you think the chances are?
- 7:22I'd say 0. 0. It's a terrible move.
- 7:25To there's a. Nonzero chance you could die by
- 7:27a squirrel. Nonzero.
- 7:32Okay, fine. One, it's 1%.
- 7:34It's a terrible move like to destroy rookies confidence like
- 7:38that to put in last year's starter who was terrible.
- 7:41But hey, you're not really cutting it.
- 7:43So we're going to we're going to go away from you and make
- 7:47another decision here. That's not great, especially if
- 7:50you're only going bachelor. I mean, look at look at what the
- 7:52Niners did with was say Trey Lance.
- 7:54They destroyed that has confidence after trading the
- 7:56word for him. I still don't think they go with
- 7:59Will Levis though. You think, do you, do you think
- 8:02he's done? Like, I mean, do you think he's
- 8:04done on the Titans? Done in the NFLI mean at that
- 8:07point, like, is he just like, hey, it's simply a AQB depth
- 8:13chart, you know, roster position in case Cam Ward falls apart and
- 8:17we just need someone who can throw a ball?
- 8:19Or is it like, hey, there might be something here, You know what
- 8:22I mean? Like with the Browns, it's like,
- 8:23hey, we got some new guys here. There could be something here,
- 8:27you know, like we're not willing to throw away anybody, but it
- 8:30sounds like Will Levis has kind of gotten to that point where
- 8:32it's like, dude, we you're just you're just here, man.
- 8:35Like at this point, like we're we're just actively punishing
- 8:39you. Like you're not going to play,
- 8:41you're not getting paid, people losing respect for you.
- 8:43I don't know, Just seems like a tough position.
- 8:46But also I think he's go ahead, go ahead.
- 8:48I was just out. That's great.
- 8:54I think on one hand, this this could help.
- 8:56I think there's been a there's been several quarterbacks and
- 8:59probably more than several who have lost the starting position
- 9:02that kind of lit a fire under them.
- 9:04Unfortunately, I think Cam Ward is one of those guys you
- 9:07probably won't be able to top just because he wasn't one of
- 9:10those highly rated guys coming out of high school.
- 9:13Like he worked his way up to that number one position.
- 9:16Also to Will Levis, Hey, all you had to do to not be in this
- 9:20position was not be the worst team in the NFL.
- 9:25That's all you had to do. I mean you probably they start
- 9:27still probably would have gotten a quarterback somewhere, but it
- 9:29wouldn't have been the number one quarterback.
- 9:31Yeah, I don't think Will Levis is done in the NFLI.
- 9:34Just don't think he's going to be a consistent starter ever.
- 9:38He might start some games here and there because of injury or
- 9:40whatever, Yeah, but I don't I don't see him being a consistent
- 9:44starter at all, regardless of where he goes.
- 9:46Right with besides Ken Ward, the Titans have Will Levis and
- 9:51Brandon Allen. We all know him, obviously.
- 9:53Sanitation 49ers legend following up with Tim Boyle as
- 9:56their their three backups. So it's not like they've got
- 10:00somebody breathing down Ken Ward's neck.
- 10:02It was, hey, do your job's at risk.
- 10:05Like whoever starts from the Browns, that's a genuinely going
- 10:07to be a week by week competition.
- 10:09And they say if you have two starting quarterbacks, you have
- 10:11no starting quarterback. But the Browns are in that
- 10:14scenario where they've got like 4.
- 10:15The Browns are in that position where they've got like 4
- 10:17starting quarterbacks right now. And so it really is going to be
- 10:21a real week by week thing. I don't think they're going to
- 10:23name a starter until they absolutely have to, but the the
- 10:26Titans and and luckily Ken Ward are not in that luxury of a
- 10:29position. One name I'm surprised you
- 10:30didn't say Avery is, is IO Manor.
- 10:33Yeah, I'm surprised you didn't talk about him at all.
- 10:35I I didn't want to hit harp on the wide receivers too much.
- 10:38I just, I think that's going to be exciting.
- 10:40I just think the wide receiver core and the quarterback is the
- 10:43only reason I would go watch a Titans game.
- 10:47Them and Derrick Henry. Oh wait, no reason to watch
- 10:52them. That's why there's no Tennessee
- 10:54Titans fans over here. And a joke they have Chiga
- 10:56Conquo. Yeah, On your heroes, on your
- 10:59brothers show. That's the one episode of his
- 11:01podcast that I actually listen to.
- 11:02Shout out to the Sabe cast if you're a hardcore Iron Man
- 11:06Runescape enthusiast. If not, just disregard
- 11:09everything I said. There's no reason to keep that
- 11:13in your memory at all. All.
- 11:14Right well, to continue going with what the Titans have put
- 11:17around Cam Ward. So one thing that I noticed when
- 11:20looking at the team overall is last season they allowed 52
- 11:23sacks and this offseason they've gotten a couple of guys who are
- 11:27free agents that they brought in.
- 11:29The one I like the most though is they brought in the left
- 11:31tackle Dan Moore junior from the Steelers last season.
- 11:34He had a 92.5% pass block win rate, which was just outside the
- 11:39top ten in the NFL. So I think that's going to help
- 11:41their offensive line a lot and help Kim Ward a lot because he's
- 11:45not going to have to worry like Will Levis had to worry last
- 11:47season about that spot on the field.
- 11:49Obviously, he's still going to have to, you know, be aware of
- 11:52what's going on there, but I don't think that's going to be a
- 11:54problem for the Titans. And so I think that 52 sacks is
- 11:58going to come down, which is going to significantly help Kim
- 12:01Ward. One thing I'm generally worried
- 12:03about for Ken Ward specifically and for the whole team is their
- 12:07offensive production. Last year they had Tony Pollard
- 12:10as they're starting running back who ran for just over 1000 yards
- 12:13and it was Tajay Spears who ran for 312.
- 12:17So you're not getting a lot of running help besides your
- 12:19starter. And then same thing.
- 12:21It's it's nearly the exact same thing in the receiving corps as
- 12:24well. Calvin Ridley, who had 1000 yard
- 12:26season, only four touchdowns, but 1000 yards receiving and
- 12:30your next person. Oh yeah, here we go.
- 12:33Good, good name to Butcher Westbrook.
- 12:37Joe Westbrook. That wasn't even that wasn't
- 12:40even a real name. OK, here we go.
- 12:44It's Evans, Will. Yeah, last year you had Nick
- 12:50Westbrook, Akini. Akini.
- 12:53Akini, you know, that was pretty good.
- 12:54That was pretty. Good, that was.
- 12:56Pretty good. That was pretty good that yeah,
- 12:58I will not get better. But he only had 497 yards and
- 13:02you were expecting a lot more at DeAndre Hopkins and that just
- 13:06didn't happen. Your whole team just kind of
- 13:08didn't happen last year. If it wasn't for the one guy,
- 13:11you didn't have a real #2 And so I'm hoping that with what's,
- 13:16what's the number here, your new wide receivers in, in putting
- 13:19backups, you've got 123-4566 new receivers in in the building
- 13:25this year and one new tight end in the building this year.
- 13:28So I mean, they are, they are truly trying to start over and
- 13:31like, OK, well, obviously what we had last year didn't work.
- 13:34So there's a whole system out and start over and try again.
- 13:37And I don't hate the strategy because it's not like they can
- 13:40get worse. They already had the number one
- 13:41pick. It's not like losing 2 more or
- 13:44three more games this year. He's going to put them in a
- 13:46worse spot than they were in last year.
- 13:48They're just all right, throw all this crap out and we'll do
- 13:51it. Try completely different next
- 13:53year. Let's bring in more crap to get
- 13:55another number one overall pick. We're going to tank the season
- 13:59before it starts sinking. Like we're going to bomb this
- 14:02thing before the maiden voyage. Well, well, there's a There's a
- 14:06rookie receiver that the Titans drafted in the fourth round.
- 14:09Can you look up his name and pronounce it for me?
- 14:12DK Kamari, come here. Come here 1st.
- 14:18Of all, first of all, you said his name backwards.
- 14:22Oh, sure, sure, sure, sure. That's checked out.
- 14:23There's a comment there. Kamir DK, is it you?
- 14:27You. You.
- 14:27Pronounced the last name right. I thought you were going to say
- 14:29Tyke. Are you just trying to set me up
- 14:34out here right now? You played yourself.
- 14:40You pronounced the the last name right, everybody.
- 14:42Just calls it. Everybody just calls him Chim.
- 14:45Chim, Chim, DK. I'm sure it's Chimir.
- 14:48Chimiri. I don't care.
- 14:50He's a, he's a Titans player. I could not care less.
- 14:53I can barely get Dak Prescott right.
- 14:58Foreign dude. Yeah, I mean, I don't really
- 15:02love the wide receivers for the Titans.
- 15:05I mean, Calvin Raisley's proven himself, I guess Tyler Lockett's
- 15:09proven himself, but he's not going to be your number one guy.
- 15:12Then they've got a bunch of guys who are unproven.
- 15:14So kind of after those two, we don't really know what we're
- 15:17getting. So I guess we'll just kind of
- 15:19have to wait and see how that plays out.
- 15:21But one thing that I looked at when I was looking at what the
- 15:23Titans have put around Cam Ward was their defense, because that
- 15:27is going to play a significant factor in how well this team
- 15:29does. Last season they allowed the
- 15:31third most points per game, but somehow they allowed the second
- 15:35least yards per game. That somehow is because they
- 15:37were turning the ball over regularly.
- 15:38When you turn the ball over on your side of the 50 regularly,
- 15:41you don't give the other two an opportunity for yards.
- 15:44Sorry, but it's just the fact that I.
- 15:46Guess that makes sense. Or your your punt coverage is
- 15:49terrible. So there's I don't know what
- 15:51they're opposing starting field position average wise, but it's
- 15:53probably very bad if you're a Titans fan.
- 15:56Remember playing Madden as a kid and trying to boost my
- 15:59quarterback stats or my wide receiver stats.
- 16:01I think it was a wide receiver and I wanted to get a really big
- 16:05yards per catch. And so it would piss me off when
- 16:08we got the ball on a turnover on like the opposing 20.
- 16:11And I'm like, the best I can get is 20 yards.
- 16:15Yeah, honestly. Trying to average 40.
- 16:19Are you playing with a little bit of room?
- 16:22So I reached out to a Titans fan, I reached out to Titans
- 16:25Talk 615 on Instagram because I wanted to get a Titans fans
- 16:30perspective on the defense. So kind of what he told me is
- 16:33the secondary is the strongest part of the defense.
- 16:35The run defense struggled last year and he thinks they'll be
- 16:38better this year. And then the edge rushing group
- 16:41is still the part of the defense that needs a lot of work.
- 16:44So if you look at the numbers, everything he said matches up.
- 16:47They allowed the second least passing yards per game.
- 16:49So the secondary is the strongest part of the defense.
- 16:52They were 26th in rushing yards allowed.
- 16:55So the defense struggled against the run last year and then their
- 16:59edge rushing. They had 32 sacks last season,
- 17:02which was third least in the league.
- 17:04They did not have a double digit sack guy.
- 17:06Their leading guy had 9 sacks, but he's now with the Patriots.
- 17:09So you no longer have your leading sack guy from last
- 17:12season. You actually lost two of your
- 17:13top four guys in sacks. And this is this is kind of the
- 17:17main reason, the main thing that makes me think the Titans have
- 17:21potential to go O and 17. They cannot rush the
- 17:24quarterback. They can't get to the
- 17:26quarterback. And when you can't get to the
- 17:27quarterback, quarterbacks are going to carve you up.
- 17:30Here's who they have as their starting front 7 listed on ESPN
- 17:34right now. And the amount of sacks that
- 17:36each of these players had last season.
- 17:38So Sebastian Joseph Day had 2 1/2, Devondre Sweat had one,
- 17:43Jeffrey Simmons had five, Draymond Jones had four, Cody
- 17:47Barton had 1.5, Otis Reese had zero and Arden Key had 6.5.
- 17:52So in total, the players who are listed as the Titans starting
- 17:56front 7 right now had a combined 20 1/2 sacks accounted for last
- 18:01year. How are you going to win games
- 18:02if you can't get to the quarterback?
- 18:03By scoring more points than them.
- 18:05But yeah, no, they're not going to win.
- 18:07I found the answer to my question here.
- 18:09The average starting field position for the Titans
- 18:12opponents in 2024 was the 41 and a third yard line.
- 18:16So you are at what's that 59 yards ever drive?
- 18:20That's all you have to do is go. That's all they have to do. 59
- 18:22yards is all they had to go, which is not what's what's field
- 18:25goal range. Two first downs away like the.
- 18:2840, Honestly, yeah. You're going 20 yards for first
- 18:31downs. Yeah, you're right.
- 18:32Two first downs away. That's crazy.
- 18:33So all they had to do to score points is go 20 yards.
- 18:36Yes, but if no one's getting to the quarterbacks, like, why
- 18:38don't we just keep passing the ball?
- 18:42Seriously though, I mean, you joke that's.
- 18:45That's real. I mean, again, going back to
- 18:46their schedule, the quarterbacks aren't it's not like a like a
- 18:49gauntlet of quarterbacks that they have to go through
- 18:51honestly, but still, even even a bad quarterback when they have
- 18:55time can carve you up. I'm.
- 18:57Gonna have to watch a Titans game that has a fun away team
- 19:00coming. It's got a sweet offense, so I
- 19:01can just watch them. I can watch them get some
- 19:04amazing offensive highlights. Chargers, Texans, Chiefs.
- 19:09I could watch Herbert do that. You can watch your boy Drake
- 19:12May. Oh, Week 7, OK, since that's
- 19:15Patriot while Tom Brady's not there anymore.
- 19:17Trying to figure out like what the I realized I was looking at
- 19:20when I was looking at there was a Raider game tickets.
- 19:22I was realizing I guess some teams just have more value to
- 19:26them. Like the Jaguars Raiders is 1
- 19:29price. The Cowboys, Raiders is
- 19:33completely separate price. Yep, yes.
- 19:35Do you guys have anything else to add about the Titans?
- 19:38They're sucking, are going to keep sucking.
- 19:39All right, we'll leave it at that.
- 19:42Well, since we're on the topic of the Titans, let's talk about
- 19:45a former Titan who Avery had already mentioned, Derrick
- 19:47Henry. This is my game.
- 19:49What I want you guys to do for the game is I want you guys to
- 19:52compare 5 running backs to Derrick Henry and all of these
- 19:56running backs are in the top 20 all time in rushing.
- 19:59I want you guys to compare Derrick Henry in his prime to
- 20:03these 5 running backs in their prime and tell me who you would
- 20:05rather have. Oh, OK, so the first one,
- 20:08Derrick Henry or Edwin James? I actually would take Derrick
- 20:12Henry. I would take Derek Henry also.
- 20:13Yeah, I'd take Derek Henry. I'm looking at his stats.
- 20:15I'll take Derek Henry. All right.
- 20:17Second guy Derek Henry or Ladainian Tomlinson Lt.
- 20:22Any specific reason as to why? Because I think he's better than
- 20:25Derek Henry, OK. Fair enough.
- 20:27I'm also going to take Lt. as complete as Derek Henry is, I
- 20:31just think Lt. Is a better running back and he
- 20:34was more hindered by his team because he was only ever on the
- 20:37Chargers, at least as far as I remember.
- 20:40No, he played for The Jets. Oh, you're right.
- 20:42Just like Brett Favre. We don't really count that, do
- 20:44we? Just like Aaron Rodgers, we
- 20:46won't count that either. And so the guy who was hindered
- 20:49by his team and Gary moved around more.
- 20:52If Derrick Henry explained his take his whole career on the
- 20:54Titans, he would be talking about the same thing.
- 20:56A great player hindered by his team.
- 20:58Well with the Ravens he was hindered by Mark Andrews hands.
- 21:01Well. Jeez Lt. 2006 did the Chargers
- 21:08not have a quarterback? How do you rush for 28
- 21:11touchdowns? You get to you throw the ball to
- 21:14the one yard line every time and then you just run it in for a
- 21:17touchdown. Holy moly.
- 21:19It's like almost like that's almost like the receivers were
- 21:21trying to go down at the one. His his second best season was
- 21:25the season right before that where he got 18 touchdowns.
- 21:28He blew that number out of the water by 10.
- 21:31That's literally quarterback numbers.
- 21:33Yikes. Yeah, OK.
- 21:35Next guy, Derrick Henry or Adrian Peterson.
- 21:38Well, it depends on what we're talking about.
- 21:41Whole package. I'll take Henry, but if we're
- 21:44talking minus the injuries and the fighting after losing some
- 21:49gambling that we saw like a couple days ago, do you see that
- 21:52video? I did not.
- 21:53OK, he was in the news. Forgot about him.
- 21:57Yeah, I'll take, I'll take Henry.
- 22:00Based on the actual completed body of work.
- 22:02I think Adrian Peterson had more potential though.
- 22:05OK. Will, who would you take?
- 22:07I actually very much agree with what we said there.
- 22:10I think Adrian Peterson had more potential than he played up to,
- 22:13which is rough to say because he had a great season, a great
- 22:16career. But I think I also take, I think
- 22:18I also take Derrick Henry, similar style running backs.
- 22:21And just so you guys know, each time I say running backs name,
- 22:24the guy is moving up the list of all time rushers.
- 22:26So Ed and James was 13th, Lt. was 7th, Adrian Peterson's
- 22:31fifth. So this next guy is third on the
- 22:33list, It's Derrick Henry or Frank Gore.
- 22:36How many years has Derrick Henry played football?
- 22:39What is this 99? Frank Gore played for what, 35?
- 22:43This is this is. This is in their prime though.
- 22:45In their prime. I think Derrick Henry.
- 22:49Yeah, Derrick Henry. I think Frank Gore just had a
- 22:51longer career. It's like LeBron and MJ.
- 22:55It's like, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 22:57OK. So the last one, the all time
- 23:00leading rusher Derrick Henry versus Emmett Smith.
- 23:03Yes, Emmett Smith. I mean, am I allowed to say
- 23:05anything else? I'm not.
- 23:06Going to say Derrick Henry is the top running back of all
- 23:10time. A lot of people, a lot of people
- 23:13don't think Emmett Smith is the top running back of all time,
- 23:16even though he's the leading rusher and the leading he leads
- 23:19in rushing touchdowns. A lot of people say it's Barry
- 23:22Sanders. A lot of people say it's Jim
- 23:23Brown. A lot of people don't think
- 23:25Emmett Smith is is the top running back.
- 23:27They think he's top five, but they don't think he's the top
- 23:29running back of all time. Dude, this dude was consistent.
- 23:33Dude just a straight up just curve bell curve of his career.
- 23:38Just starting off rookie prime and then just that slow descent.
- 23:42No, like weird. Like, oh, I didn't play.
- 23:45I was hurt this whole time. You know, I guess it's second to
- 23:48last season he missed some games.
- 23:51He played, I think. He was just there every time.
- 23:54And that's part of the reason why he's the all time leading
- 23:57rusher and he leads in rushing touchdowns is because he was he
- 24:00wasn't hurt that often. What does that mean for for
- 24:04running backs now, considering they have they just seemed every
- 24:08year, they just seemed to have a shorter and shorter shelf life.
- 24:11I'm curious. Like I was under the impression
- 24:13that, you know, football in the 90s and early 2000s was just a
- 24:17lot rougher back then. Plus you didn't have the sports
- 24:20medicine, sports science and stuff to like, if you had the
- 24:23money and cared about it to like keep your body in tip top shape.
- 24:26I mean, I'm just still thinking back to that first.
- 24:30Say what? You guys were hard drips.
- 24:33Yeah, I mean, like Lawrence Taylor, that's, I mean, he ran
- 24:36on cocaine. He broke bones on cocaine.
- 24:39You just But you didn't feel pain because you were so doped
- 24:43up in every possible way did. They have bath salts back then
- 24:49because that would. They had them, I don't know if
- 24:50they were using them, just quick bath salts.
- 24:53Google No problem. The answer is Emma Smith, right?
- 24:57Like obviously even even Derrick Henry's prime, I don't think
- 25:01he's doing the things Emma's doing.
- 25:03How close would it be though? Like, is it like there's no
- 25:07question it's Emma Smith? Or, like, was Derrick Henry even
- 25:10in consideration at all? I mean, it has to be in
- 25:12consideration, but I don't, I don't think I would ever pick
- 25:17Derrick Henry over Emma Smith. Is that just because you're a
- 25:19Cowboys fan? It's got to be, it's got to be
- 25:21Cowboys guys pulling all the way through here and I have no
- 25:23problem admitting it. I will say it no with no issue.
- 25:26I I'm a Cowboys fan, so I, I want good Cowboys players to be
- 25:31continuously recognized. OK.
- 25:33Oh Chad GBT thought I was talking about smelling salts.
- 25:37I quickly corrected it and it just gave me an emphatic no, it
- 25:41would not make you better on bath salts.
- 25:43It would make you complain less about injuries, coordination,
- 25:47judgement like spatial and time awareness like out the window.
- 25:50But you wouldn't get hurt at least like while you're on the
- 25:54bath salts, so. Targeting journalism right
- 25:57there. In case you guys wanted to know,
- 25:58yeah, no one's taking bath salts.
- 26:00No one's doing bath salts outside the bath.
- 26:04All right, OK, so I've, I have another question for you guys
- 26:09about Derrick Henry. So Emma Smith had 18,335 rushing
- 26:14yards and 164 rushing touchdowns in 15 seasons.
- 26:18In nine seasons, Derrick Henry has 11,423 rushing yards and 106
- 26:24rushing touchdowns. Do you think that Derrick Henry
- 26:27could either break the rushing yards record or the rushing
- 26:30touchdowns record by the time his career is over?
- 26:33So you said? I need to like see these numbers
- 26:36I can't visualize. That 11,000, 18,000 right yards.
- 26:39Yep. So he's got 7000 more to go.
- 26:42It's, it's like 6900. It's a little bit less than
- 26:457000. Emmitt Smith played fifteen
- 26:47seasons. Derrick Henry's played 9.
- 26:49Derrick Henry is currently tied for 6th on the all time rushing
- 26:53touchdowns list with 106. Emmitt Smith had 164 and he had
- 26:5818,335 yards and 11 and Derrick Henry has 11,423 rushing yards.
- 27:05So basically in in six more seasons, do you think Derrick
- 27:08Henry can get just over 6900 rushing yards?
- 27:12Or is he at 2000 this year? He's getting a 2000 rushing
- 27:15yards this year. We've all seen that thing,
- 27:17right? Adam Sandler, Derrick.
- 27:18Henry gets 2000 he's. Getting 2000 rushing in an Adam
- 27:22Sandler movie, that's a bigger incentive than his contract.
- 27:25He has to go to dinner with Adam Sandler and be in a movie with
- 27:29lines, I think. I believe he said.
- 27:30Major role, something like that. If you do this really tough
- 27:34task, I will get you dinner and give you an additional job.
- 27:41Honestly, here's the thing. This is how I see it.
- 27:43Because Henry for all intents and purposes, basically had two
- 27:472000 yard seasons. I'll just give it to him for
- 27:50this last one. He's at 1921.
- 27:52I would be surprised. I would be blown away if he has
- 27:57the endurance and the I get what's the word for just like
- 28:02being able to protect his body durability for the remain
- 28:06durability. It's simple.
- 28:08It's how big he is. I, I just feel like for the most
- 28:11part, I mean, even in in the NBAA lot of sports, I mean just
- 28:14the bigger you are, the harder it is to stay healthy.
- 28:17The fact that he's been doing it at this level for this for what?
- 28:20I mean, eight years now, nine years, that's impressive.
- 28:23But I don't see it continuing. I can see him breaking the
- 28:27record if he is hell bent on getting it and sticks around the
- 28:32NFL just to get it. Other than that, I don't think
- 28:35he'll get it. What about rushing touchdowns?
- 28:37He's 58 rushing touchdowns away. 58.
- 28:41I mean, that's really still five seasons.
- 28:44With as big as there can or. Maybe, maybe.
- 28:46It's probably just Four Seasons if again, if he maintains, you
- 28:51know, average production. Which is 11.77 touchdowns a
- 28:55season so far in his career. I think he could do it.
- 28:59I just know there's a steep drop off man.
- 29:01Like it's, it's like one injury and that's like the snowball
- 29:05going down the the snowy mountain man.
- 29:08If he averaged 11.77 the rest of his career, it'd be 5 more
- 29:12seasons For him to break the record, he'd have to average
- 29:1511.77 rushing touchdowns for five more seasons.
- 29:19I mean, here's the thing I'm looking at like Adrian Peterson
- 29:21stats, I mean, if you talked about his first seven years,
- 29:25you'd be like this guy is the greatest running back and I see
- 29:30no end insight next season. He has 75 yards with the
- 29:33exception of the year after that where he got 1500.
- 29:36What wasn't the 75 because he got suspended though?
- 29:40Yeah, but that, I mean, that's what I'm saying though, is like,
- 29:42but again, that's not, I mean, I'm sure Derek Henry can keep
- 29:45his nose clean. But besides that, I mean, after
- 29:48the next 1500 yard season, 72 yards, 81 yards.
- 29:52Oh no, that was oh, cuz he was with two different teams,
- 29:54basically 500 yards, 1806 hundred 8216.
- 29:59I don't know. I just, I don't have a lot of
- 30:01faith in running backs, especially when we're talking
- 30:03about like chasing like a career milestone, I guess.
- 30:07I just think Derrick Henry is just such a big guy that even
- 30:11when he's older and you know he's been used and abused as a
- 30:15running back, you can still put him in at the 1 yard line and
- 30:18all. All he has to do is just get 1
- 30:20yard. I think he's going to be good at
- 30:22that for a very long time, even when he's not the guy who's
- 30:25running 90 yards down the field for a touchdown.
- 30:28He's big enough and I think he takes care of his body very
- 30:31well. I think he's going to be very
- 30:33good at getting rushing touchdowns for a long time.
- 30:36I mean, Speaking of a guy like that, even Jerome Bettis, who
- 30:40was like the master of 1 yard touchdowns after he turned 30,
- 30:44he got 7 touchdowns at age 31. He had 13 touchdowns at age 32,
- 30:49but then he had 9 touchdowns at age 33 and then he was done and
- 30:53he had a few more years after he turned 30.
- 30:55Because the bigger guys, they get hit harder because you have
- 30:58to hit hit them harder to take them down, especially when
- 31:00you're jamming them together at the 1 yard line.
- 31:02Now I could be completely off base here, but Jalen Hurts only
- 31:06has realistically a few more years of it took push because
- 31:11his value just physically can't take that kind of dogpile year
- 31:15after year after year doing it that many times.
- 31:17And it's going to get banned. It probably won't, not until the
- 31:20wording is actually accurate. I just think that like he ever
- 31:23said, there's the downturn or running backs tenure is
- 31:26incredibly high. Even though on his new team
- 31:29where he's not the endo be all he's got Lamar, he's got other
- 31:32players in there who are going to take the pressure off of
- 31:35them. I still just don't see him
- 31:36breaking either record. They're going to be incredibly
- 31:39hard to break forever. Honestly, I feel like with this,
- 31:43it really comes down to like how much Derek Henry wants it.
- 31:47If it's something where he says, oh, I'm going to break that
- 31:49record, I'd honestly probably believe he would.
- 31:52If it's something I believe that he's trying to get to that, then
- 31:55yeah, if it's like I want to win a Super Bowl, I don't see him
- 31:59pushing himself to get there. I see it more as winning.
- 32:01It's the same thing as like kneeing the ball in the one yard
- 32:04line to help your team win but piss off all your fantasy
- 32:07owners. OK, so final question with this
- 32:10segment. If Derrick Henry breaks either
- 32:12the rushing yards or rushing touchdowns record, is he the
- 32:16greatest running back of all time?
- 32:17No. No, I don't think so.
- 32:20He's the same guy who's both of them right now.
- 32:22No. And to bring the Basketball
- 32:24Reference and if he does that, I would consider him the LeBron
- 32:30James of running backs, where he's an incredible physical
- 32:34specimen, has produced a lot, but is not the best ever.
- 32:38Whereas, like, LeBron is like, yeah, you are a freak athlete,
- 32:41You are incredible. You've won championships.
- 32:43You've played longer than, like, basically anyone else, but
- 32:46you're not the best. You just have an incredible
- 32:49talent. But there's been, you know, at
- 32:51least one other guy that's just got you beat.
- 32:54That's fair. All right.
- 32:55So let's move on to our next topic.
- 32:57This is a fan question and yes, I'm going to dox him.
- 33:00This is my former Co worker Jairo Alvarez who I worked with
- 33:03at Enterprise unfortunately employment and he still does
- 33:08work there in Carson City, NV. If you want to.
- 33:13Find him, that's where you to go.
- 33:16If you hate this question, you know where to find him.
- 33:19Sharo, What's your name? Hiro.
- 33:21Hiro. All right, so here's the
- 33:23question from Hiro. Can Shooter Sanders win the
- 33:25Browns quarterback competition? And I'm going to put in here
- 33:29like actually win, not just like come in because somebody else
- 33:33sucks. Can he actually win the Browns
- 33:36quarterback competition? What do you guys think?
- 33:38Can he? In a world full of
- 33:41possibilities, yes. I'm going to go with your 1%
- 33:45from earlier because there is a, as mentioned, a more than
- 33:49statistical zero rate killed by a swirl.
- 33:51So there is, I won't say there's a zero chance.
- 33:55There is a statistical possibility, yes.
- 33:58But who is in that quarterback row?
- 34:01Browns, this is what you get for asking questions, you guys.
- 34:05I can tell you you've got Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dylan
- 34:08Gabriel, Shader Sanders and Deshaun Watson technically.
- 34:12On ESPN, shader Sanders isn't even listed as as in the top 4
- 34:17here. That is correct, but Deshaun
- 34:19Watson is also listed as the star.
- 34:21He is correctly. I think the answer is no.
- 34:24It is actually no because it if it is the season starts to to
- 34:28turn down on them. They will go back to over liable
- 34:31Joe Flacco, the Raven himself and just let's let him take
- 34:36over. I don't think they mess around
- 34:37with another like if, if it's Dylan Gabriel then and Dylan
- 34:41Gabriel doesn't pan out, I don't think they mess around with
- 34:43another rookie. I don't think they do that this
- 34:45year. I think they go to a a seasoned
- 34:47vet and try a different rookie out next year or in the
- 34:50offseason. We have these people more
- 34:52experienced under a starter because we've seen time and time
- 34:55again, I mean Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love and the list goes on
- 35:00and on of these rookies who sit behind starters, veteran
- 35:04starters for a few years and they come into the league.
- 35:08They come in as a starter after a few years with the actual
- 35:11skills and experience of what to do with how to do it and it's
- 35:15incredibly beneficial. And if they don't know what Joe
- 35:18Flacco from the get, I think they pick one and then shift to
- 35:22Joe Flacco part way through the year.
- 35:23I'm going to go ahead and say, and you can put this on your
- 35:26spreadsheet, I think Sanders plays for another team before he
- 35:32gets named the official starter. I think he could come in and
- 35:36start a game. It's one of those like, test it
- 35:38out. We'll see how it goes.
- 35:39Like, oh, he's going to be a starter for this game, but by
- 35:42the time an organization says that he's our guy, he'll be
- 35:46playing for a different team. Interesting.
- 35:48We'll see. So I think the answer to this
- 35:50question is no for this year, but yes for next year.
- 35:54So here's the reason why it's no for this year, Shadur is the
- 35:58only quarterback who has not received a single first team
- 36:02Rep. Every other quarterback, well I
- 36:03guess not Deshaun Watson, but every other every other
- 36:06quarterback has received first team reps.
- 36:09The only one who hasn't is Shadur.
- 36:11He's been stuck playing with the backups.
- 36:13Now one thing I will say about Shadur is he seems to have
- 36:17changed his attitude a little bit and obviously I'm not there
- 36:20so I can go based off of his videos and quotes.
- 36:25Is this after he got arrested He.
- 36:26Didn't get arrested just to speaking ticket.
- 36:29Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry. Technically.
- 36:30He's a misdemeanor. Yeah, it's a misdemeanor.
- 36:32Yeah. Is this after his misdemeanor
- 36:33his attitude started to change or before?
- 36:37In. In between?
- 36:39In between the two. Tickets in between the two
- 36:41tickets. I didn't hear about the second
- 36:43one. Yeah.
- 36:44He's gotten. He's gotten 2.
- 36:46The. Notification came out after he
- 36:48got the second one. Yeah, his attitude was too good
- 36:52and the second one had to put him back in the middle.
- 36:55Here's the ticket. Here's the ticket for being too
- 36:57polite, Sir So. He's gone to Cindy, Boy.
- 37:03You're getting another ticket. Jeez.
- 37:06All right. Sorry.
- 37:07All right, so Shadour was asked about his lack of first team
- 37:12reps, and here's what he had to say.
- 37:14You could view things as you're not getting reps in a negative
- 37:16way, or you could view it as, OK, when is it my time to get
- 37:19out there? Let's be proactive, let's get
- 37:20warm and let's get going so there's no excuses because when
- 37:23you get out there, nobody cares how many reps you got.
- 37:26Whenever you get in the game, nobody cares if you took a snap
- 37:29before. Everybody cares about
- 37:31production. So that's the main thing.
- 37:33When you get out there, you got to be able to produce.
- 37:36I don't think pre draft we would have ever heard that from
- 37:39shooter Sanders. Can you repeat the first part of
- 37:41that quote? Yeah, he said.
- 37:43You could view things as you're not getting reps in a negative
- 37:45way, or you could view it as, OK, when is it my time to get
- 37:48out there? Let's be proactive.
- 37:50That's. Like me asking for a raise and
- 37:56then be like no, and then my buddy being like, oh, that's got
- 37:58to hurt. Like no, you could see it as
- 38:00they're not giving me my money is a bad thing, but I see it as
- 38:03when am I getting my money? I Yeah.
- 38:08I don't know. I think I understand what he was
- 38:11trying to say. I can definitely taken as what
- 38:14you're saying agree, but I don't, I don't know.
- 38:17I don't view that as much of an attitude change to me personally
- 38:20because it can be taken in different ways and we don't
- 38:23know. I mean, I didn't hear him say I
- 38:25wasn't there at the press confident.
- 38:26You hear the whole thing and see his body language.
- 38:28It's easy to act professional. I mean, look at Cam Newton,
- 38:31right? It's easy to act professional
- 38:33until until something goes wrong and then you just act like a big
- 38:38whiny baby. And I'm not saying that
- 38:39Shudora's a big whiny baby. I am saying that Cam Newton was,
- 38:42but I just, I don't think it's going to last.
- 38:45That's the problem is that history is going to win out in
- 38:49this and he's going to. Chances are he's going to revert
- 38:52back to his old ways. I feel like that the Browns are
- 38:55kind of like purposely not giving him first team reps.
- 38:58I don't think it's actually because of how he's performing
- 39:00because if you look at his performance, he's gone fourty 1
- 39:03of 53 in completions at 77.4%. Granted, it's with backups, but
- 39:08still, that's a very high completion percentage.
- 39:11He's from 9 touchdowns and 1 interception, and that's in OTAs
- 39:15and mini camp combined. When Shader Sanders has been in
- 39:17there, he's done really well. And again, I know it's with the
- 39:20second team, but when he's in practice, he's producing
- 39:24numbers. He's showing that he can play in
- 39:26the NFL, and I just feel like the Browns are purposely not
- 39:30putting him at first team just to kind of humble him up a
- 39:33little bit and really make himself earn his way to that
- 39:37starting spot. I feel like if the Browns would
- 39:40have drafted him in the first round like they did with Brandon
- 39:42Whedon and Johnny Manziel, it's like, OK, the starting spot is
- 39:46yours. But that's not the case with
- 39:47Shudur. He didn't get drafted in the
- 39:49first round. The starting spot is not just
- 39:51his like it's always been his entire career, regardless of the
- 39:55level he's played at. This is the first, first time
- 39:58where he's really had to earn that spot.
- 40:00And I think that the Browns are purposely kind of stringing that
- 40:04out for Shooter to see how he handles the situation.
- 40:07And then when he's ready, they're going to put him in as a
- 40:09starter. And I don't think it's going to
- 40:11be this season, but I think it's going to be next season.
- 40:14This might also be the first time that he's actually not the
- 40:17best quarterback on the roster. That might also be the case that
- 40:20he is, which seems like he's always been given the spot, but
- 40:25it's also very possible he's just been the best quarterback
- 40:28available and I think. He's played at Jackson State in
- 40:32Colorado, so let's and in high school and in high school.
- 40:36Whoever he went to high school. I went to high school with Coach
- 40:39Prime's son. I was better than.
- 40:42I'm sure there are people who believe that, but yeah, this is
- 40:48just, this happens to all these guys where they they're the best
- 40:51guy in College, in high school when they get to the NFL and
- 40:54it's just not they're no longer the big fish anymore.
- 40:57Yeah, I don't think, like I said, I think he's going to be,
- 41:00he's not going to be the starter until he's on a different team.
- 41:02I think when it's all said and done, the Browns is going to be
- 41:06a time of his life that he doesn't like to talk about very
- 41:08much. Well.
- 41:09Especially if if Devil Gabriel or somehow can you pick it works
- 41:14out. Like if one of these younger
- 41:16guys works out, there's no there's no reason for the Browns
- 41:20to keep Shadour. Use them as trade capital.
- 41:24You see these OTAs and mini camp stats that you've let him
- 41:27acquire as trade bait and get them out of there.
- 41:31Get them to the Saints. Saints always need a quarterback
- 41:35right now. There's there's lots of room out
- 41:38there for good young quarterbacks and the Raiders
- 41:41don't have a succession plan. I mean, the Seahawks will
- 41:45probably be looking for a quarterback about week 7.
- 41:48There's lots of teams out there that are going to be looking for
- 41:50for quarterbacks and so. What ironic though, because
- 41:54every single one of those teams passed up on him more than once.
- 41:57Well, I mean, the Browns did that too, right?
- 42:00They even picked the quarterback.
- 42:01Before him. Yeah, that's true.
- 42:03I wonder if they're going to actually do anything to try to
- 42:05raise his trade value before that.
- 42:08Because if you get the guy that late in the draft, don't use him
- 42:12and then be like, all right, we're trying to get rid of him.
- 42:13Anyone want him? Like, dude, you just proved our
- 42:16point for not drafting him. Like no, we don't want him.
- 42:18Let me ask you guys this if Shader goes out and he just
- 42:21balls in the preseason, do you think that a team would inquire
- 42:25about trading for him? Yes, absolutely.
- 42:27I absolutely do. This year or next?
- 42:29Year. No, I even think this year.
- 42:30No, I could. I could see it this year just
- 42:32because every It's not. The Browns quarterback situation
- 42:34isn't a secret, and I think taking trading to remove a piece
- 42:38from that puzzle is probably a good thing for the Browns.
- 42:41It's like, don't make us choose someone, just offer us something
- 42:44for one of these guys so we can make it can make our decision
- 42:47easier. And I, I think that I was just
- 42:49trying to say the same thing this this preseason for the
- 42:52Browns is going to be very interesting because you've
- 42:54really got three games to assess. 4.
- 42:57Plus Deshaun watching quarterbacks to figure out who
- 42:59you're going to go with. And yeah, sure you're is that
- 43:03shared practices and your OTAs, your money camps and this that's
- 43:06the others is going to give you a lot of what you want to know.
- 43:10But that previous preseason games are really going to
- 43:12matter. And I'm I'm interested who
- 43:14they're going to start in that same preseason game when it's
- 43:16usually your starters out there for a full quarter and maybe
- 43:19even a full half. That's it's going to be really
- 43:21interesting as we approach our August to watch that happen.
- 43:24If you guys had to pick right now, make your prediction.
- 43:27Who's going to be the starter Week 1?
- 43:29Joe Flacco. Flacco.
- 43:31I would say it's Flacco too. Well, thanks again to Jairo for
- 43:34the question about the Browns. We appreciate you listening to
- 43:37the show and reaching out to us with a question for us to answer
- 43:41on the show. So we've got one more segment on
- 43:43the show today and this question, well, this topic idea
- 43:47was actually Will's idea. So I'm going to let Will meet
- 43:50this. Host.
- 43:52Take it away. I'm not going to This is why I
- 43:55don't host, but I guess here we are.
- 43:57So, so I'm going to pitch the question to you first.
- 43:59So what do you take to ask the question?
- 44:04So what do we got? What are your tapes?
- 44:09So there are a large amount of college football players that
- 44:12like to make it to the pros and that we want to see in the pros
- 44:15and from our favorite teams and some from nuts.
- 44:17So Joe, let's start with you. Who is your favorite player in
- 44:22college? I'm not your actual favorite
- 44:23player, but somebody who you watched in college that you were
- 44:26excited to see in the pros that just didn't pan out.
- 44:30They just they should have had a better career than they had and
- 44:33they just didn't pay out. I'm.
- 44:34Going to start by saying that I don't have a favorite player who
- 44:37didn't pan out because I'm such a good draft analyst that all my
- 44:41favorite players are always. Successful.
- 44:43What's your take Moving on? I'm the host.
- 44:47Too bad. You lose.
- 44:52All right, So what you got? OK.
- 44:54OK. So I went with Melvin Gordon.
- 44:57Melvin Gordon in 2014 was exciting to watch.
- 45:01He was basically all the people who are watching Ashton Gente at
- 45:06Boise State last season. That's what we got from Melvin
- 45:09Gordon in 2014. Here's the stats 343 carries,
- 45:132587 rushing yards, 7.5 yards a carry, 29 touchdowns is.
- 45:19This college. This is college.
- 45:20This is 2014, his last. Year one season.
- 45:24That's just one season. That's in the Big 10, too.
- 45:27That's not Yeah, that's not Mountain West.
- 45:31He had an Ashton Gente season before Ashton Gente did it this
- 45:34last season. So then he goes to the NFL.
- 45:37He gets drafted by the Chargers 15th overall in 2015, his rookie
- 45:42season. He runs for 641 yards in 14
- 45:45games, and he averages 3.5 yards a carry.
- 45:48He did not have one single touchdown his rookie year.
- 45:51Not one. I'm sure that made fantasy
- 45:53orders surreal. Oh.
- 45:55Yeah, so I reached out to our buddy Tim from Answer the Call
- 45:59because he's a Chargers fan, and I texted him and I said I.
- 46:02Don't want to talk about this. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:06No, I said, I said do you think Melvin Gordon was a bust?
- 46:09And he was like, oh, absolutely. He was like, you know, when you
- 46:11consider the overall bust, like you're not Jim Marcus Russell
- 46:15status, but you know, he's driving the 15th overall with
- 46:18that type of a season. He didn't ever live up to the
- 46:21hype in his whole career. He had one 1000 yard rushing
- 46:25season, which was in 2017. He played a full 16 game
- 46:28schedule twice. He averaged less than 4 yards of
- 46:32carry in six of his nine NFL seasons.
- 46:34So after having a historic rushing season at Wisconsin in
- 46:382014, he goes to the NFL. He doesn't even come close to
- 46:43what people thought he was going to be.
- 46:45He probably would have been the first running back taken in that
- 46:47draft, but there was a guy named Todd Gurley who was drafted
- 46:50ahead of him. Now let's compare Ashton Gente's
- 46:53season last year to Melvin Gordon.
- 46:55Ashton Gente had 374 carries, 2601 rushing yards.
- 47:00So before Ashton Gente became the second, became second in
- 47:05single season rushing yards, it was Melvin Gordon he averaged.
- 47:08Ashton Gente averaged 7 yards of carry and he had the same amount
- 47:11of touchdowns with 29 and they both finished second in Heisman
- 47:16voting. Also something very similar
- 47:18between the two is they were both drafted in the top half of
- 47:22the draft by AFC West teams. So I want to ask you guys, does
- 47:27this give you any sort of caution when it comes?
- 47:30Down no, I think those are I don't I think those are
- 47:33irrelevant stats. I think they also have the same
- 47:36birthstone and Zodiac sign and both of their mother's middle
- 47:41name is Anne. I I think like it could happen,
- 47:45but not for any of those reasons.
- 47:47I, I don't, I mean, it could be something where it's like, oh,
- 47:50this dude's just too small or the defenders are just catching
- 47:53him all the, the, the breakaway runs.
- 47:56Because I would love to know how many yards did Gente get after
- 48:01first contact? Because that's what would change
- 48:03more than anything is like, yeah, I mean, you were shedding
- 48:06tackles left and right. But as soon as you come across
- 48:09some, you know, more competent, you know, defenders that can
- 48:12actually wrap up, it's going to be a different story.
- 48:14However, that wasn't Melvin Gordon's story.
- 48:16It wasn't like, oh, these guys are just a little bit better.
- 48:19And I was like, Nah, dude, you're they're just not that
- 48:21good anymore. But no, I don't.
- 48:23I, I, I think, I mean, if I were to place a bet, I would say
- 48:26absolutely he has a better season than Melvin Gordon.
- 48:28And if he doesn't, I will be blown away.
- 48:30And I'll say, all right, those were not irrelevant stats.
- 48:33I think everybody would be blown away.
- 48:34Well, what do you think? I can't agree with Avery with
- 48:37you. Those are kind of irrelevant.
- 48:39I also think that the time, the football time span, I guess the
- 48:45the play styles of teams that play, I don't know, the, the era
- 48:50of game that we're in is so different now and it doesn't
- 48:53seem like that long ago, but it's so different now to when
- 48:57Melvin Gordon was playing. I just Nope, that's the wrong
- 49:00guy. No, that's the right guy.
- 49:01Melvin Gordon's the right guy. Todd Gurley is the other guy.
- 49:03Melvin Gordon is the right guy. The timers are so different now
- 49:06than when Melvin Gordon was drafted that Ashton Jesse is
- 49:11coming into a different league and it's, it's a full different
- 49:14scenario nowadays. So I I just, I think the two are
- 49:17truly incomparable. OK.
- 49:19I think that's fair. Hey, Rick, who you got?
- 49:21I want to start with an honorable mention.
- 49:23Oh yeah. Colt Brandon.
- 49:25Oh, OK. You guys remember him?
- 49:29That little sidearm? Yeah.
- 49:30Toffin boy out of Hawaii. Turns out dude was just not just
- 49:36didn't have it together. I think he ended up OD ING on
- 49:39something and then he he like got in trouble with the law.
- 49:44He was at one school. No if he ever comes back, he's
- 49:49on the hook for a lot now. I think he was playing
- 49:51somewhere, got kicked off the team, played with some JUCO team
- 49:55and then went to Hawaii as a walk on.
- 49:57So it's one of those things where it was like dude just keep
- 50:00your nose clean. But still ended up putting
- 50:02insane numbers then couldn't cut it in the NFL.
- 50:07But the actual guy I want to talk about is Mitchell Trubisky.
- 50:11I honestly for this, I just, I feel bad for the guy.
- 50:15I watched Carolina football when he was sitting on the bench for
- 50:19two years. I remember Marquis Williams was
- 50:22their quarterback and he wasn't the most accurate.
- 50:24He wasn't anything great, but like he was a mobile
- 50:26quarterback. He just made good decisions for
- 50:29the most part. They made it to the ACC
- 50:32Championship, got bent over by Clemson and it was interesting
- 50:37because they had a lot of offensive weapons.
- 50:40Marquis Williams last season and a lot of guys that would come
- 50:43over to the next the next year. Some good guys actually left.
- 50:47But the whole thing was, I remember because Trubisky would
- 50:50come in a few times a game, like usually towards the end, and
- 50:55he'd make some passes and it'd be fine.
- 50:56And I just remember like, well, Marquis Williams is so good.
- 50:58He's out there just Michael vicking it up.
- 51:01And I remember the beginning of the season where Trubisky
- 51:04started and I like before the first game, people saying this
- 51:09guy is going to be first round talent, maybe even like top ten.
- 51:14And I'm like, we talking about the same guy, the guy who's been
- 51:16on the bench the past two years and they're like, look at his
- 51:19size, look at his stat. Like dude, so calm.
- 51:22Look at him on the bench. Look how calm he is.
- 51:24It's like, yeah, he's sitting on the bench.
- 51:27And I I remember back then trying to look up like, what am
- 51:31I not seeing? Why the hell was Larry Fedora
- 51:34not playing this guy? That was their coach.
- 51:36He got fired later for not a great coach, but I'm getting so
- 51:41distracted. Basically, he never did
- 51:44anything. He hadn't done anything.
- 51:47It was all just, oh, he did really well in high school and
- 51:50some scouts saw him. And then it just became that,
- 51:53like, the hype got out of control.
- 51:55People are like, no one's really seen him play yet.
- 51:57But like, from everything we've seen, this guy can really ball
- 52:00out. He's really special.
- 52:02Might be even, you know, a little under the radar.
- 52:04And then everyone started talking about him and I
- 52:06remember, I mean, he finished like he was.
- 52:08I think he threw like 30, two 3600 yards, 30 touchdowns, 6
- 52:14picks. I'm like average.
- 52:16Like like you're a starting quarterback.
- 52:18And then he got drafted crazy high over who were the other
- 52:22guys at Deshaun Watson was in that Patrick Mahomes.
- 52:25Granted Patrick Mahomes was not Patrick Mahomes at that time.
- 52:28You can say, Oh no, how could you skip over Patrick Mahomes?
- 52:31Like, dude, Kermit the Frog playing at Texas Tech, Like, I'm
- 52:34sorry. It's not.
- 52:36No one was like, this is the guy.
- 52:39But I just feel bad because Trubisky never really had a shot
- 52:43to prove himself. He was kind of just riding that
- 52:47high and he's like who is he going to be to?
- 52:49Who is he to be the guy to be like, hey guys, you guys are I'm
- 52:53not that great. You know, like you guys haven't
- 52:55even seen me play that much. You know, I've only started for
- 52:57one season and you guys are going to put me up there because
- 53:00I have good athleticism. Like, I mean, not even
- 53:02athleticism, size, form, weight, like that's like any guy off the
- 53:08street could have that. That doesn't mean he's going to
- 53:09be a good quarterback. And the one season he's had to
- 53:11play wasn't anything special. So I just feel like a lot got
- 53:15put on him and then he came in to Chicago like he didn't turn
- 53:20the franchise around. Neither has any other
- 53:23quarterback in their entire. History.
- 53:25The bars. Anyway.
- 53:28Yeah, he's not that great, but you guys, the Chicago Bears are
- 53:32idiots for thinking he was anything more than that and
- 53:35they're going to put it on him. Do this as you guys, you guys
- 53:38suck. You guys sold the farm for this
- 53:40man, this mediocre man who's a good guy, cool guy, not worth
- 53:44all that. And then you put it on him
- 53:46instead of looking at yourself for misjudging, miss evaluating
- 53:50this guy. You're like, no, he sucks.
- 53:52He screwed us. He drafted himself and paid
- 53:55himself all that money to screw us.
- 53:58Screw the Bears, dude. I apologize.
- 54:01Do you guys think that's the worst?
- 54:04Do you guys think that's? Do you guys think the Mitch
- 54:06Trubisky trade is the worst trade?
- 54:09Robert Rest in the third head would like to enter the call
- 54:11here. That trade, that trade's got to
- 54:14be way worse, especially for the production.
- 54:17I mean, I guess the the he did. Get more injured though, like
- 54:21he. The reason his career was short
- 54:23is because of his injury though. OK.
- 54:25And what the best, best abilities availability, right?
- 54:28I know, but nobody could have predicted that.
- 54:30Didn't he have ACL injuries at Baylor?
- 54:32Did he have did he have any problems his whole career?
- 54:35Do you? Remember when they had all those
- 54:37commercials for the Heisman for RG3 like the most interesting
- 54:40man in college football? Do you guys remember those?
- 54:43Jeez, the Bears sent over to the third overall pick for the next
- 54:48year. Third round, fourth round and
- 54:50another third round. Sorry, didn't catch up.
- 54:52He tours ACL as a sophomore year in college and then later and
- 54:56did that in 2009 and in 2013. Torn again.
- 54:59We can't say we're surprised. I don't know.
- 55:02Do you think that's worse than the Bears trading for Trubisky?
- 55:05I don't know if it's worse, but it's up there.
- 55:09It's not worse than the it's not, Oh, I got it.
- 55:12It's not worse than the trade. Lance Trade the worst.
- 55:17Trade the worst. Trade hey hey, trivia question
- 55:21who did The Who did the Niners take third overall in the 2017
- 55:27draft is. That the forest Buckner.
- 55:28Right after Trubisky. It's the forest, Buckner.
- 55:30No? Are you asking or talent?
- 55:33I'm wondering, well, I know it's.
- 55:34Not an answer. Usually when you ask a tribute
- 55:37question, you have an answer. If I ask.
- 55:40Him a question. I'm not going to waste your time
- 55:42when I know the answer. Solomon, Thomas.
- 55:44OK, Solomon Thomas. Were they on the verge of
- 55:47picking Trubisky? I'm just now reviewing what they
- 55:50traded that the Bears had the third overall pick and they in
- 55:55order to get the second overall pick, they gave the Niners their
- 55:59pick right after them, and then a third, a fourth, and another
- 56:02third round pick. Were the Niners about to pick
- 56:05him? Yeah, but the way that works is
- 56:08that the bears get word, probably from the Niners, that
- 56:12somebody else is trying to trade into that spot.
- 56:15Hey, man, we're trying. We're feeling other calls for
- 56:17this. And so they feel like they.
- 56:18It's a fear tactic. You're afraid you're going to
- 56:20lose your guy, so you have to move up one spot for it.
- 56:24It's business. Dang, well, I was I was being
- 56:26mean to the bears. You're going this is this is
- 56:29violent, dude. That's the bears suck.
- 56:33Why would you do that unless they were going to pig?
- 56:35Oh my gosh. All right, let's move on.
- 56:41All right, we'll finish this off.
- 56:43That seems oddly sexual. Finish this off.
- 56:50The same time. Anyway, I picked Darren
- 56:52McFadden, Arkansas Razorback legend.
- 56:56In three years, he had 4500, almost 4600 rushing yards and 41
- 57:02touchdowns in the SEC. And this is back 2000 and five
- 57:052000 and six 2007. So back when football was
- 57:08football. I know what I said.
- 57:09These are This is a guy who played football.
- 57:12Here's a guy. He was second in Highland voting
- 57:14twice. back-to-back seasons. Last two I believe it was Troy
- 57:19Smith and then Tim Tebow. Thank you.
- 57:23Which probably should have beat Troy Smith.
- 57:25Finished with almost 5000 scrimmage yards.
- 57:28I don't believe he started all three years.
- 57:31Well, all games, all three years.
- 57:33Wait, wasn't Colt Brennan in that Heisman race?
- 57:36It's possible he also notably played on the same Arkansas
- 57:40Razorback team as Madden legend Peyton Hillis and Felix Jones.
- 57:45Now not Madden legend, but played in the same era Arkansas
- 57:49team as Felix Jones. He I was trying to watch some of
- 57:53his highlights are there today, but they're in standard
- 57:55definition and so it's hard to view them on YouTube because who
- 57:58wants to watch that garbage anymore?
- 58:01What's That's what I'm saying. High is the new low.
- 58:06And his what, 10 years in the league, if you count the last
- 58:09two where he played four games till now in his last two
- 58:11seasons, he only ever had two seasons over 1000 yards because
- 58:16he was just regular with injury after injury after injury.
- 58:18But when he was in, it was like instant highlight.
- 58:22He, he was very effective, fun to watch.
- 58:26His problem was fact that he was on the Raiders.
- 58:28Honestly, that was that was a big problem.
- 58:30He's on the Raiders back when the Raiders were inconsistent,
- 58:33we'll call it. Isn't that right now?
- 58:37But they've been an inconsistent long enough.
- 58:38It is. It's actually consistent now
- 58:41from 2008 to this was back. This is back when they had like
- 58:44the baseball field in the middle of their stadium.
- 58:46Still this is. Back when their inconsistency
- 58:49was new from 2. 1000 and eight, 2015 before he really got hurt.
- 58:55He totaled 5300 rushing yards to over 2000 receiving yards.
- 59:00He he was just an instant highlight.
- 59:02He was putting people in the dirt.
- 59:03He was, he was doing the things that we see Derrick Henry doing
- 59:07now, breaking tackles, pushing people over, all that kind of
- 59:09stuff. But before, before his time
- 59:13really in college, he was huge in the Wildcat.
- 59:17He threw a 13 passing touchdowns at Arkansas in his career.
- 59:22He was he was early adopter of the Wildcat formation and never
- 59:26really made its way in the NFL. And it's kind of faded out of
- 59:29the college game now because obviously with the ball in our
- 59:31quarterbacks hands, but there was regular occurrences that he
- 59:36was receiving the snap, either handing it off or throwing it or
- 59:40running it himself. Just constant highlight machine
- 59:43after highlight reel and doing it in in the SEC where he's
- 59:47running past Alabama and LSU and all these other big name SEC
- 59:52defenses that are supposed to be all time at its Arkansas.
- 59:57So I just wish that he had a better opportunity and I'm
- 1:00:00afraid that he got the same treatment, but it was more
- 1:00:03injuries than anything else. But he just got thrown to the
- 1:00:06wayside, which is too bad. His last season he played in one
- 1:00:10game, he had one carry, he had negative.
- 1:00:12Two rushing yards, yeah, for the MO Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:00:16Hey, one of his 2000 yard seasons was was for the Cowboys.
- 1:00:19Was 2-3 rushing touchdowns. Comma 1000 yard seasons, not
- 1:00:232000 yard seasons. I would be clear about that.
- 1:00:26OK, I'm done being the host. I'm done playing the host
- 1:00:28forever. Well, you let you cut off your
- 1:00:31camera twice. Yep.
- 1:00:33So as soon as I made you host, you were like I.
- 1:00:35Didn't do that and. Next time I'll try Avery, see
- 1:00:38what happens. It already happened.
- 1:00:40You didn't even have to call on me.
- 1:00:44All right, let's wrap it up. All right, that's all we have
- 1:00:46for today's show. Thanks for tuning into episode
- 1:00:4916 of Three Guys 6 Balls. And as always, don't forget to
- 1:00:52keep your balls played with. We'll see you next time.
- 1:00:55Also, Mark Davis and Sarah Kyle still sucks.
