- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 9th of
- 0:16December and clever you tapping on play and saying come on Sean,
- 0:20it's time. Let us read the next chapter of
- 0:23this awesome book of Daniel. Let's find out what he's going
- 0:25to get up to in these royal halls as he interacts with these
- 0:30kings, these emperors. And today we move on to the next
- 0:34emperor, and we get to hear what God is doing with this
- 0:37incredible gift that he's given Daniel of interpreting these
- 0:40dreams and visions. And this one is particularly
- 0:43special to me because I remember having this audio cassette as a
- 0:47kid telling the story, and I would listen to it again and
- 0:50again and again with these vivid images in my mind as I lay in my
- 0:55hammock in the garden. There you go.
- 0:57But here we are in 2025, and we continue to read these stories
- 1:01because they hold the truth, the truth of a God who is mighty and
- 1:06more powerful than any Kingdom. And that you will see as the
- 1:10theme replaying again and again and again that this is God's
- 1:14world. The rule is that may think that
- 1:16they're running the show. All their power and authority is
- 1:20a gift to them. And that plays out through all
- 1:23these stories and then plays out through the visions that we will
- 1:26begin this week and read next week as well.
- 1:29So let's continue the story. Holy Spirit, open our hearts so
- 1:34that we see you robed in splendour and glory as we read
- 1:38these stories. Alright friends, let's read
- 1:42together Daniel chapter 5. Many years later, King
- 1:56Belshazzar gave a great feast for 1000 of his nobles and he
- 2:01drank wine with them. While Belshazzar was drinking
- 2:04the wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver
- 2:08cups that his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar had taken from
- 2:11the Temple in Jerusalem. He wanted to drink from them
- 2:14with his nobles, his wives, and his concubines.
- 2:18So they brought these gold cups taken from the Temple, the House
- 2:21of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives
- 2:25and his concubines drank from them.
- 2:29While they drank from them, they praised their idols made of
- 2:33gold, silver, bronze, ironwood and stone.
- 2:37Suddenly they saw the fingers of a human hand writing on the
- 2:41plaster of wall in the King's palace near the lampstand.
- 2:45The king himself saw the hand as it wrote, and his face turned
- 2:51pale with fright, his knees knocked together in fear, and
- 2:54his legs gave way beneath him. The king shouted for his
- 2:58enchanters, astrologers and fortune tellers to be brought
- 3:02before him. He said to these wise men of
- 3:04Babylon, whoever can read this writing and tell me what it
- 3:08means, We'll be dressed in purple robes of royal honour,
- 3:11and we'll have a gold chain placed around his neck.
- 3:15He will become the third highest ruler in the Kingdom.
- 3:19But when all the King's wise men had come in, none of them could
- 3:24read the writing or tell them what it meant.
- 3:26So the king grew even more alarmed, and his face turned
- 3:30pale. His nobles, too, were shaken.
- 3:34But when the Queen Mother heard what was happening, she hurried
- 3:37to the banquet hall. She said to Belshazzar, Long
- 3:40live the king. Don't be so pale and frightened.
- 3:44There is a man in your Kingdom who has within him the spirit of
- 3:48the holy gods. During Nebuchadnezzar's reign,
- 3:52this man was found to have insight, understanding and
- 3:55wisdom like that of the gods. Your predecessor, the king.
- 4:00Your predecessor, King Nebuchadnezzar, made him chief
- 4:03over all the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and
- 4:06fortune tellers of Babylon. This man Daniel, whom the king
- 4:11named Beltejazar, has exceptional ability and is
- 4:15filled with divine knowledge and understanding.
- 4:18He can interpret dreams, explain riddles, and solve difficult
- 4:22problems. Call for Daniel and he will tell
- 4:25you what the writing means. Sir Daniel was brought in before
- 4:30the king. The king asked him, Are you
- 4:33Daniel, one of the Exiles brought from Judah by my
- 4:36predecessor, King Nebuchadnezzar?
- 4:39I have heard that you have the spirit of the gods within you,
- 4:42and that you are filled with insight, understanding and
- 4:46wisdom. My wise men and enchanters have
- 4:49tried to read the words on the wall and tell me their meaning,
- 4:53but they cannot do it. I am told that you give
- 4:57interpretations and solve difficult problems.
- 5:00If you can read these words and tell me their meaning, you will
- 5:04be clothed in purple robes of royal honour and you will have a
- 5:08gold chain placed around your neck.
- 5:11You will become the third highest ruler in the Kingdom,
- 5:15Daniel answered the king. Keep your gifts or give them to
- 5:20someone else. But I will tell you what the
- 5:22writing means. Your Majesty, the Most High God
- 5:28gave sovereignty, majesty, glory and honour to your predecessor
- 5:32Nebuchadnezzar. He made him so great that people
- 5:37of all races and nations and languages trembled before him in
- 5:41fear. He killed those he wanted to
- 5:44kill and spared those he wanted to spare.
- 5:47He honoured those he wanted to honour and disgraced those he
- 5:49wanted to disgrace. But when his heart and mind were
- 5:53puffed up with arrogance, he was brought down from his royal
- 5:57throne and stripped of his glory.
- 5:59He was driven from human society.
- 6:02He was given the mind of a wild animal, and he lived among the
- 6:05wild donkeys. He ate grass like a cow and he
- 6:09was drenched with the dew of heaven until he learned that the
- 6:13Most High God rules over the kingdoms of the world and
- 6:18appoints anyone he desires to rule over them.
- 6:22You are his successor, O Belshazzar, and you knew all
- 6:26this. Yet you have not humbled
- 6:29yourself, for you have proudly defied the Lord of Heaven and
- 6:33have had these cups from his temple brought before you.
- 6:38You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been
- 6:42drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold,
- 6:47bronze, ironwood and stone. Gods that neither see nor hear
- 6:51nor know anything at all. But you have not honoured the
- 6:55God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny.
- 7:00So God has sent this hand to write this message.
- 7:04This is the message that was written.
- 7:07Menne, Menne, tekkel and passin. This is what these words mean.
- 7:14Menne means numbered. God has numbered the days of
- 7:19your reign and has brought it to an end.
- 7:23Tekkel means weighed. You have been weighed on the
- 7:27balance and have not measured up.
- 7:31Passin means divided. Your Kingdom has been divided
- 7:37and given to the Medes and Persians.
- 7:41Then, at Belshazzar's command, Daniel was dressed in purple
- 7:45robes, a gold chain was hung around his neck, and he was
- 7:49proclaimed the third highest ruler in the Kingdom.
- 7:52That very night, Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, was killed and
- 7:59Darius the Mede took over the Kingdom at the age of 62.
- 8:04Are You are the most amazing God.
- 8:17You are the most amazing ruling king.
- 8:21All the creation is your Kingdom, and you do not rule
- 8:25with an iron fist, but you rule with absolute authority and
- 8:30sovereignty, but with grace and with love.
- 8:35And to make sure that we understand this message you have
- 8:38given us, Jesus, who came so that we can understand who you
- 8:43are and what your character is like and what your plans are for
- 8:46us. And your plans are that we could
- 8:50be your children, your cherished ones, and live with you forever
- 8:56and ever in your loving embrace. So we love you back and we love
- 9:04your Kingdom and we love your ways, and we love what you have
- 9:08planned for us. And we say yes, yes, come, Lord
- 9:12Jesus, come and be our King today, every day of our lives
- 9:18and to the very end of this age and every age.
- 9:22We are your children. You're grateful, honoured and
- 9:26loved children. And we pray all of this in your
- 9:30name, Jesus, Amen.
