Latest / The Catholic Current / LTACL: The Most Promising Sin? (Fr. Robert McTeigue, S.J.) 8/10/26

- 0:00Hey, we're doing it again by popular demand. I'm continuing my series
- 0:03on the 7 deadly sins. Now,
- 0:06I'm asked about sin all the time in lots of
- 0:10odd circumstances, people from every walk
- 0:14of life. Now imagine this,
- 0:18I'm visiting cloistered nuns. These are women who are
- 0:22away from the world, from everything.
- 0:26They really don't get out much. They don't know a lot
- 0:29about what's going on. And we ended up having a conversation about
- 0:33sin when they asked me this question,
- 0:37Father, what's this thing we hear about called
- 0:40Amazon?
- 0:44Can you imagine how I answered? Stay with me, I got a story to tell.
- 0:48I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTeague, your host here every day at The Catholic Current,
- 0:51coming to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a
- 0:55closer look. Glad you're here. So even in
- 0:58this most remote monastery, cut off from all of
- 1:02the everything, these holy women had heard about Amazon.
- 1:06And I tried to explain, and I said, well, it's kind
- 1:10of a store that you contact through a computer or
- 1:15a phone. Well, what can you buy there, Father? And I said, well,
- 1:19just about everything that's legal. Give them enough time and
- 1:24enough money and they can get you just about anything. And they said, well,
- 1:27gosh, they said, yeah, I guess that can be kind of useful,
- 1:31huh? And I said, well, it's not just
- 1:35useful, it's invasive. And they didn't know what it meant. I said,
- 1:39you know, because you buy this, you buy that, and they figure out, oh,
- 1:43he likes this, he likes that. And then they
- 1:47develop shopping lists of things that they think you will
- 1:51like. And then they send you messages uninvited,
- 1:56and messages that begin with the words,
- 2:00get yourself a little something. And all these holy
- 2:04nuns recoiled in horror, and they didn't
- 2:08want to hear anymore. The very idea,
- 2:12according to them, that a Christian would allow himself
- 2:16to be exposed to some kind of agency that
- 2:20would make you want things that you
- 2:24didn't need. That was beyond the pale. That was unthinkable.
- 2:28Uh, they were going to put their hair— their fingers in their ears, but they
- 2:31got their veils covering their ears, so they couldn't do that. But they would.
- 2:35So that got me to thinking, what did these good holy women know that
- 2:39most of us don't know, including those of us who are umbilically
- 2:44attached to Amazon and eBay and all
- 2:47those other things? You know, 10 things you didn't know
- 2:51you needed until now. Well, this leads
- 2:56us to the deadly sin of greed. And greed is
- 3:00more than just wanting more
- 3:04than what you should have. St. Thomas Aquinas said greed is
- 3:07a sin against God, just as all mortal sins,
- 3:11inasmuch man condemns things eternal for
- 3:15the sake of temporal things. So you see what happens?
- 3:19We're made for the eternal, and we end up wanting—
- 3:24not just using, but wanting and even worshiping things
- 3:29that don't last. Well, when you put it that way,
- 3:33greed sounds kind of dangerous and kind of stupid too.
- 3:37Dante thought so when he wrote his Purgatory.
- 3:41Penitents who were greedy were bound up and laid face
- 3:45down on the ground for having concentrated excessively on
- 3:49things that are earthly. And you
- 3:53look in scripture, there's all sorts of warnings against greed.
- 3:57I'm going to give you just 2 from the Book of Sirach. The eye
- 4:01of the greedy person is not satisfied with his share.
- 4:05Greedy injustice withers the soul.
- 4:09So says my old friend Sirach. What about the prophet Isaiah?
- 4:12Isaiah says, why toil for what does not satisfy?
- 4:17So I started looking at that word satisfy.
- 4:20The Latin for that, for satisfaction, for satisfy, is satisfacere—
- 4:26to be made full, to be made
- 4:30complete. Can any earthly thing,
- 4:35can all earthly things satisfy the human
- 4:39heart? Well, of course not, because we have an immaterial,
- 4:43immortal soul. We're made for the infinite. We're made
- 4:47for God. Even the whole world is
- 4:51not enough. And when we become greedy,
- 4:57we push away Christ, because Christ is always
- 5:01offering himself to us, always offering to
- 5:06be the first and full satisfaction of our hearts.
- 5:10And when we're greedy, when we accept the promises
- 5:15of greed— get yourself a little something,
- 5:19you deserve it, things you didn't know you needed until
- 5:23now, everyone will like you, you won't
- 5:26want anything else after this, blah, blah, blah,
- 5:29blah, blah— we all have heard those lies. And all
- 5:33too many have believed them.
- 5:36Well, how do we get free? Well, this is, this is the
- 5:40hard part. We have to stand before
- 5:44Christ with open hands and open hearts
- 5:49and say, be my enough.
- 5:54Be the first satisfaction of my heart.
- 5:58Be the first one I turn to whenever I am
- 6:02longing or in need. Whenever I have an ache, a pain
- 6:06that won't go away, I want to turn to you
- 6:10first. And if we allow our Lord to fill our
- 6:14hearts, if we come to him expectantly and get into the habit
- 6:19of receiving himself, not stuff,
- 6:23not things, himself,
- 6:27then we can approach the world with fullness
- 6:30and with generosity rather than with craving and rather
- 6:35than a ravenous heart.
- 6:40It's the work of a lifetime, I'll admit it,
- 6:43but we have to start somewhere. So let's begin
- 6:47to step back from the things that we really don't
- 6:52need. And maybe, just maybe,
- 6:55we can ignore Amazon the next time it says,
- 6:59we found something that you'll like.
- 7:02Meanwhile, think on these things today. Take them to prayer and talk
- 7:06about it with those you love. Go in peace, and please do pray for me,
- 7:09for I am a sinner.
