- 2:13fan of Bridge Valley. Uh so, uh it's it's a great program.
- 2:15Uh, you know, getting people back to the workforce. I'm gonna talk
- 2:19to Morgan about that a little bit later on. Plus your phone calls and
- 2:22texture Welcome big Ley Pickley Wiggly Hotline three zero four three four five fifty eight
- 2:25fifty eight through pharmacy texts three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight.
- 2:30Let's welcome into the studio this morning. State Auditor candidate for Attorney General
- 2:34JB. Mccusky. Good morning, sir, how are you, Dave.
- 2:37It's always good to be back on the big Ley Pickley Wiggly Hotline. Yeah,
- 2:40okay, well you're not technically on the big Bigley Picky unless you call
- 2:46in now. If you want to go in the green room and call in,
- 2:49then you'll be on the big Lely Picky wiggly hotline. But right now
- 2:51you're in the Parmar store. Student, they're getting four or five extra reads
- 2:53today. Yes they are, Yes, Yes, Cindy, they are.
- 2:58How you how you man man great? You know, it's a wild world
- 3:01being a small business owner and a dad right now getting kids to school every
- 3:06day. I can't imagine why during the Christmas season. Well, and you
- 3:08know it is interesting. You know, when you watch the news, you
- 3:13can say however, they can say however they want, that the economy is
- 3:16going well. When you sell things to regular people, the answer is it's
- 3:23actually not going very well. And we got a lot of work to do
- 3:25as a country on our economy and a bunch of other stuff I want.
- 3:30I wouldn't get this out of the way. Last week I had state senator
- 3:32and candidate for Attorney General as well, Mike Stewart on the show, and
- 3:37to be honest, I'm sure you've heard the show or somebody's told you about
- 3:40it. He said some things that weren't terribly complimentary about you your campaign you
- 3:46personally, would you like to take time to address any of that? No,
- 3:52So there's two ways to campaign. Mike has his way and my way
- 3:57is to talk to the people of West Virginia about our collective future. I
- 4:00think you know, the opportunities that we have in front of us as a
- 4:04group of people as mountaineers are so incredibly bright and so important that I don't
- 4:10really want to spend any time speaking about the person running against me. I
- 4:14want to speak directly to the voters of West Virginia about my record, who
- 4:16I am, and what I'm going to do to make sure that their lives
- 4:19are improved and that our state continues to move forward. Let's talk about your
- 4:24work in the Auditor's office before we move on. We've heard a lot of
- 4:28the news JB about COVID funds being spent in all the wrong ways, and
- 4:31anytime the government gets involved and throws that many dollars at that many people,
- 4:36sadly there's going to be fraud. What are you hearing out there? What
- 4:41do you worry? Sure? So we just finished up supporting the US Attorney
- 4:45for the Southern District of West Virginia, mister will Thompson. Our office is
- 4:48a key support staff for them. They reached out to us on PPP loan
- 4:53fraud, of which everyone knows there's a lot and people on my team have
- 4:57been incredibly honored to be tasked with and asked by the US Attorney's Office in
- 5:02the Southern District of West Virginia to work on that. I think it's the
- 5:05third conviction of felony PPP fraud that we've helped convict. And as you know,
- 5:12when this money started coming out, my office, along with West Virginia,
- 5:15took a leadership role in the country about how do we instruct and ensure
- 5:21that all of this federal money that's going to local governments is spent on infrastructure
- 5:27that gets water to people's houses, that gets internet to people's houses, that
- 5:30gets floodwaters away from people's homes, you know, the things that we need
- 5:33to make West Virginia's lives better today and to attract great new businesses and young
- 5:40families to the Mountain state. You know, we really led the country and
- 5:43making sure that all of our local governments had the resources they needed, but
- 5:46importantly that the citizens of West Virginia had the transparency that's required to hold all
- 5:51of those elected officials accountable. You've served two terms. Again, we're talking
- 5:57with State Auditor JB. Mccusky, also candidate for jur Attorney General JB.
- 6:00You serve two terms at State Honor. What are you most proud of during
- 6:04your time there? Well, I mean the list is just so long,
- 6:08Dave, you know, how long do we have? But you know,
- 6:11I think to start off with the thing that I'm the most proud of is
- 6:14that I have built a staff of people who are so committed to West Virginia's
- 6:21future that every single day I wake up confident that the people that I that
- 6:26I work with are going to do the right thing at every turn, and
- 6:29they're going to make sure that our government is operating as transparently and as efficiently
- 6:33and as effectively as possible. And we have really made great strides out of
- 6:39out of the Auditor's Office in reforming so many ways that our state bureaucracy operates,
- 6:45to make it faster, to make it more attentive to taxpayers, to
- 6:47make it more attentive to small businesses, and on a macro level, you
- 6:51know, we made our office twenty percent smaller, We reduced our general revenue
- 6:57budget. We returned one hundred million dollars back to the general revenue, and
- 7:01on top of that, we've reduced audit times. We've added audits to our
- 7:05list. We've prosecuted over forty felony fraud cases out of our office. And
- 7:12when you do all that while you're also making the government smaller and less expensive,
- 7:18it's very very easy to go to bed at night knowing that the service
- 7:23that you have committed yourself to is being effective and it is positively affecting West
- 7:27Virginia taxpayers' lives every day. Talk about the numbers that you've got on the
- 7:31state checkbook system. That was one of the things that you really ran on
- 7:34was getting these governmental agency, cities, counties, whatever to do the checkbook.
- 7:39Where are we on that? Sure? So one of the campaign promises
- 7:43that I made was that we were going to make West Virginia the most transparent
- 7:45state in the United States. And I sort of got laughed at because it's
- 7:47a bold claim, But we have actually done that. West Virginia taxpayers have
- 7:51more access to how their government money is spent than any other people in the
- 7:55entire country. And that's important because we've got election day coming up. So
- 8:00I would ask every single taxpayer to use the West Virginia Chechbook wvcheckbook dot gov.
- 8:05It's a real time accounting of every single dollar that the state of West
- 8:07Virginia spends, and we have I believe forty four counties on board and upwards
- 8:13of fifty cities on board, and every all fifty five county school boards.
- 8:18So you can see how your tax dollars are spent from bottom to top,
- 8:22local to state, and you can choose. When you're in that voting booth,
- 8:26the people that looked you in the eye told you the truth and spent
- 8:30your money on the priorities that you think West Virginia needs. Now you're running
- 8:35for attorney general. How's the campaign been fantastic? It's been just an enormous
- 8:41outpouring of support from all over the state. You know, the events we
- 8:45attend, there's tons of people are fundraising is going great. But more importantly
- 8:48than that, I just I hear so many encouraging words from people that I
- 8:54didn't know that it followed my auditor's race and followed me as the auditor,
- 8:58and just are really excited about having my vision for West Virginia and my ability
- 9:05as a lawyer to defend us against the federal governments overreach. But more importantly
- 9:11than that, to help the next governor create a bureaucracy in a government that
- 9:16is small, efficient, but importantly really effective at the things that government must
- 9:22be doing. What makes you the best candidate for a g because now there
- 9:26are only two on the Republican side mintioned Mike Stewart earlier, but State Senator
- 9:28Ryan Weld and now a couple of weeks ago he would will be attempting to
- 9:31stay in his role of state senator, not running for AG a Republican side
- 9:35at you, mister Stewart, What makes JB. Mccuwskey the better choice?
- 9:39Sure? So I have let me just talk a little bit about who I
- 9:43am, and I think that probably will a charge you. So if there's
- 9:46folks out there that don't know me, you know, first of all,
- 9:48I'm a Christian. I'm a husband. I got up my beautiful wife and
- 9:50I have been married for eighteen years this year. We have an eight and
- 9:54a six year old little girl that I get to walk to school every day.
- 9:56So I'm a father and those three things and a Christian, a husband,
- 10:00and a father inform everything that I do. And so as I go
- 10:05to work every day, the only thing that I worry about is how how
- 10:09is my effort on that day going to make West Virginians lives better, and
- 10:13so my legal practice when you combine that with with sort of who I am
- 10:16and my roots as a West Virginian. I started off working at a place
- 10:20called the American Center for Law and Justice, and I'm very, very proud
- 10:24today to be working with them on making sure that President Trump can stay on
- 10:28the ballot here in West Virginia. They have come into West Virginia because of
- 10:31me, and they are they are truly defending our voters' rights to vote for
- 10:37the person of their choice. And it's very clear that Donald Trump is the
- 10:39choice of a vast majority of West Virginians. And so I worked on First
- 10:45Amendment rights, religious freedom all the way up to the to the United States
- 10:48Supreme Court. And then I came home and I spent my private practice legal
- 10:52career in the defense industry, mostly defending coal mines and working with with gas
- 10:58companies on their land and lease deals, trying to make sure that we maximize
- 11:03our natural resources and that West Virginia's place as a leader in energy production doesn't
- 11:07falter. And then I got elected to the legislature and elected to the state
- 11:13Auditor's office, and so for the last seven and a half years, my
- 11:16practice of law has been how do we apply the Constitution and the law code
- 11:22to everyday actions of government? So there isn't a minute or a day that
- 11:26goes by that I am not actively practicing law and doing so in a way
- 11:30that makes me and helps me understand the entire state's bureaucracy and how it operates.
- 11:35And so the next Attorney general, you know, along with defending our
- 11:39Second Amendment and defending our religious freedoms and defending us against the EPA and rogue
- 11:45federal agencies that quite frankly don't like the way that we live our lives here,
- 11:48and I think it's important to know that they don't because we have to
- 11:52know who we're fighting. But they're going to have to work with the next
- 11:56governor to reform our bureaucracy. And it's at one thousand person business and every
- 12:03single time that true transformation happens in an organization that large, it's the CEO
- 12:07and the general counsel that are doing that. And I have contacts and a
- 12:11record of being able to build a first class law firm that's broken down by
- 12:16industry type that will provide the best possible resources through the entire bureaucracy to make
- 12:22sure that that reorganization happens properly, legally and in the best interest of every
- 12:26tax paying West Virginia. If you are elected to Attorney general and you go
- 12:31in day one or day sixty days, so put it down whatever number you
- 12:37want, Give me some goals, give me some things that you that are
- 12:39at the top of the list. Sure. So, I think one of
- 12:41the first things that we really need to look at is how is the federal
- 12:45government. So Patrick Morrissey has been incredibly successful attorney general and in so many
- 12:52respects, we just have to continue his legacy and continue his his footprint on
- 12:56what the Attorney General's office does. He has taken on the large federal bureaucracies
- 13:03and now they realize they can't win on those issues, and so they're using
- 13:07places like Fish and Wildlife, smaller government agencies to hold up our progress.
- 13:11And so we need you know, I'm going to hire a first class set
- 13:16of people who understand how to sue and win in federal court against the federal
- 13:20government. And we're going to find every single way that our manufacturers and our
- 13:24coal miners and our gas companies and our small businesses and our churches are being
- 13:28infringed on by the federal government. And we're going to be very, very
- 13:31aggressive and making sure that West Virginia is continuing to lead the country and defending
- 13:37against federal overreach. But we're doing so in a West Virginia way. And
- 13:41I think the reason that that is so important is that West Virginia's on the
- 13:46move and there are people looking at West Virginia and the reason people want to
- 13:52live here is because of who we are. You know, other states can
- 13:56build stuff. We have something here that you cannot buy and that is natural
- 14:01beauty. Obviously, great location, obviously, but the thing that's the most
- 14:05important is that West Virginians are humble and kind. They're hard working. And
- 14:09there are people that live in Baltimore, Dallas, DC, you name the
- 14:13big city. They move down there because they thought they had a Trader Joe's
- 14:16or something, who have a couple of little kids and they're saying, you
- 14:20know what, I want to raise my children's where I know the value set
- 14:24of those people, and so West Virginia has that. So we need to
- 14:28grow the right way, but we need to be able to grow our way
- 14:31and to do that, we have to defend ourselves against you know, what
- 14:33you and I were talking about earlier is as a civilization that is in some
- 14:37ways crumbling around us. And these are people here that aren't glued to their
- 14:43phones, they're not trying to impress their neighbors, they're not spending outside their
- 14:46means, and they're going to church every Sunday, right, and so these
- 14:50this is a place where an entire generation of young families are going to look
- 14:54to to live a lifestyle and to have a community that surrounds them that they're
- 15:00proud of. Where can people learn more about the campaign at GB mccuske for

- 15:22and this place is just so special, and the love and respect I
- 15:26have for the people here is beyond belief, and I'm just I'm incredibly grateful

- 19:56us from the Putnam County Development Authority. Morgan good More, how are you,
- 20:00Good morning, Dave, I'm great, Thanks for having me on this
- 20:03morning, Thanks for being here. Welcome to the show. Now I want
- 20:07to talk about this program. It is called Canaw Valley Fame and it's a
- 20:11collaborative effort I'm presuming from the Putnam County Development Authority and Bridge Valley is that
- 20:17right, Yes, it's a workforce development program. And FAME is an acronym
- 20:21because we love acronyms apparently in all things. But SAME is actually a national
- 20:27model. It stands for Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education. It was actually developed
- 20:33by Toyota a little more than a decade ago, and Twyota actually brought it
- 20:37to Bridge Valley first, and it is a post secondary apprenticeship model where you
- 20:45can go to school at Bridge Valley and earn an associate's degree in advanced Manufacturing
- 20:51Technology, but you actually get hands on training with a local employer while you're
- 20:56going to school. And Putnam County Development Authority stepped up this last year and
- 21:02became the non profit supporter of a Canaw Valley chapter, so we're really focusing
- 21:08on the Canaw, Putnam, Kavala, and Mason areas. And we are
- 21:15really excited because we had so much interest in this program that we actually got
- 21:19to add more employers this year and right now we're in the middle of recruitment
- 21:23and we're super excited and I'm happy to talk a little bit more about what
- 21:27that means for our region. Let's before we do that, let's talk about
- 21:33some of the companies that are involved here. You mentioned Toyota. This is
- 21:36kind of a national thing that you're doing. Who are some of the other
- 21:37companies that are involved in this to help out? Yeah, absolutely, So
- 21:41Toyota is accepting folks for now. This is skilled maintenance, Dave. So
- 21:48these are the folks that are going to be actually working on machinery in and
- 21:51advanced manufacturing the plant. So some of the other employers that have joined us
- 21:56this year are New Course Feel of West Virginia, Skills and Systems, Service
- 22:02Wire, AEP's plant and Mountaineer Plant in Mason County, as well as Natara
- 22:07or most people firm know them as formerly in Gkspark Plugs. So we now
- 22:12have six employers covering a multitude of counties that are looking for skilled advanced maintenance
- 22:21technicians and that's what this program is going to allow students to gain knowledge in.
- 22:26So let's talk about how this whole thing came about and how it came
- 22:29to West Virginia. You mentioned that it's kind of a national program, but
- 22:32now it's going more local here in the Kanal Valley. How did this whole
- 22:34thing come about? Sure, So Toyota recognized that they were seeing a retirement
- 22:41wave of their skilled maintenance technicians, so they actually developed an apprenticeship program and
- 22:47they first took it to their plant in Kentucky and then they brought it here
- 22:49in West Virginia. So we have actually had an Advanced Manufacturing Technology degree at
- 22:55Bridge Valley for about a decade, but Toyota was the only one taking advantage
- 22:59of the APPROENTTI. So they actually started all of this with Putnam County Development
- 23:03Authority. Within the last year, they approached us and said, hey,
- 23:07we already have the curriculum set up at Bridge Valley and Bridge Valley has been
- 23:11a great partner in this, and they said, we would love to have
- 23:15other employers join us. We recognize that not many people have gone into skilled
- 23:21maintenance over the last couple decades, so we are from that and started approaching
- 23:27other companies, and then we had companies approaching us about it, and now
- 23:32we have a full cohort of six companies for the Canaw Valley Chapter of same.
- 23:37And again PCDA is tied to that chapter with Bridge Valley, so now
- 23:42we're out recruiting and we are looking at people who are interested in working at
- 23:48one of those facilities while they are getting their associates degree at Bridge Valley,
- 23:52and who is eligible morgan to take part in this program. So looking for
- 24:00anybody over the age of eighteen. You do not have to be right out
- 24:03of high school. Actually, we had a cohort start this fall at Bridge
- 24:10Valley, which is super exciting and actually fifty percent of the students that were
- 24:15in this fall cohort we're not straight out of high school. So we are
- 24:18looking for anyone over the age of eighteen. They do have to be drug
- 24:22free, they have to be willing to commit to the program and to one
- 24:26of the sponsor employers for two years, and they need to be college ready.
- 24:30So basically the classes are already set out date for two years, so
- 24:34they need to be ready to hop right in in the fall. And there
- 24:37is an interview process and an application process, and the students will actually interview
- 24:42with all of the companies and then they will receive an offer and they can
- 24:48select which employer they would like to work with, just like they would if
- 24:51it was a real job outside of an apprenticeship. So a student would be
- 24:56working for one of those six companies for the two year length of the program.
- 25:02And what makes this so attractive day that it's kind of a no brainer.
- 25:07So the students are actually going to get paid by the company while they
- 25:10work for them part time. And Bridge Valley has been such a great partner
- 25:14on this program that the way it works is the student will go to Bridge
- 25:17Valley for two days a week and then they all break apart for the other
- 25:22three days of the week and they work at their sponsor employer. And with
- 25:26programs like West Virginia Invests, you can actually get this degree completely for free.
- 25:33And then Bridge Valley got another grant called a send that pays above and
- 25:38beyond what West Virginia invest does, so it could actually pay for books in
- 25:42the fees and gas cards. So a student could get an associates degree for
- 25:48free and still get paid three days a week and get part time experience.
- 25:52I mean, it's just such an incredible opportunity for students. Oh and I
- 25:57agree with that. And one of the things Morgan that I liked in Learning
- 26:00As I said, I sit down with the folks at the Development Authority last
- 26:03week and kind of get a little deep dive into this myself. Not for
- 26:07me personally, but I mean so I could learn about it. One of
- 26:10the things that I like about well, I mean, heck, you said
- 26:12non traditional. I was non traditional as they get at fifty three? Why
- 26:15not? You know. One of the things I do like about the program
- 26:18is again we want to do what we can to you know, get our
- 26:22young people involved, the one straight out of high school. But there's no
- 26:26I mean, as long as you are drug free, is you ready or
- 26:27whatever, there's no reason why a thirty to thirty five year old or older,
- 26:33as far as I understand it, could could say, you know what,
- 26:37this is what I want to do. I want to change careers and
- 26:38I want to do this. Is that a pretty Is that a pretty accurate
- 26:41statement? Absolutely? You could be in a completely different field, or you
- 26:45could be in manufacturing that maybe you're on the production line and you're looking for
- 26:49something different, maybe that it pays a little bit more. You know,
- 26:53anybody can apply for this, so there's definitely not a threshold to where you
- 26:57know you're too old or anything like that. And this it's such a great
- 27:03career, Dave. I mean, you know, we're joking about you being
- 27:06non traditional, but in a lot of different ways, Morgan, a lot
- 27:08of different ways. But I mean honestly, when you graduate with this Associates
- 27:15degree, this skill set is needed not only here in the Kana Valley,
- 27:18but literally around the world and just here in the region. If you were
- 27:23to graduate with this degree, in this skill set, you're looking at making
- 27:26sixty to eighty thousand dollars right out of the gate with an Associates degree.
- 27:30Sixty to eighty six right out of the gate, you're saying, you look
- 27:34at possibly making sixty to eighty thousand dollars a year, correct, without student
- 27:40loans and things of that nature, right with zero debt. And you should
- 27:42have been, you know, pocketing some of that money that you've been making
- 27:47because you have no you have no debt. So it's it's such a great,
- 27:52great program. And one of the reasons that I wanted us as the
- 27:56Development Authority to get involved is for us, this is twofold one. We
- 28:00want to retain the existing employers we have here in West Virginia that have chosen
- 28:04to make this their home. And one of the best ways that we can
- 28:07do that is to cultivate the next generation of workers for them because they need
- 28:11workers that are skilled. But secondly, this is allowing us the opportunity to
- 28:17give people a great career virtually for free and stay local. There are good
- 28:23paying jobs here, David. I know that you know that, and I
- 28:26know that, But I want the public to know that manufacturing can pay very
- 28:32good in terms of salary. And I really hope that with us going out
- 28:37and recruiting and talking to high schools, that we are communicating that you don't
- 28:41have to leave West Virginia to have a great paying career. But Dave Alan
- 28:47John five to eighty Live is presuented part by Pinnacle Consultants. Whether you're replaced

- 29:07Because what you don't know can hurt you, all right, Morgan,
- 29:08before we let you go, you got some upcoming events, some open houses
- 29:12to talk about. I know you said you're out in the schools. What
- 29:15do you got coming up? Yeah? Absolutely, thank you. My team's
- 29:18done a great job. We've actually presented to twenty four different locations this fall,
- 29:23but we are going to continue. You're going to see us in Caball
- 29:26and Canawan Counties over December and jail system. But the big day I want
- 29:30everyone to know about. We are having an open house at Bridge Valley's Advanced
- 29:34Technology Center on Tuesday, January twenty third, from five to seven pm.
- 29:41You can learn about the program, speak to the employers that are involved,
- 29:47and then we're going to be wrapping up interviews for next fall in February.
- 29:51So if you're interested, you really need to check it out. Look at
- 29:53PCDA dot org or check us out Putnam County Development Authority on Facebook for all
- 29:59of the same information you need. All right, all right, Morgan,
- 30:02I appreciate you being here. We'll talk soon. Best of luck with everything.
- 30:04Thanks a lot, Thank you, Morgan, tending again from the Putnam
- 30:07County Development of forty. I you know, when I first heard about this
- 30:10program, I thought, man, this is this is awesome. I mean,
- 30:14it really really is, because again it's about trying to keep young people
- 30:17here. But this is not just open to young people. I mean this
- 30:19is open to anybody that is drug free, college ready, regardless of age.
- 30:23You can do this program. Now. That open house again is January
- 30:26twenty third at Bridge Valley from five until seven pm. We'll be talking more
- 30:30about a matter of fact, doctor Casey Sacks from Bridge Valley I think is
- 30:33going to be on the show later this week. She's going to make a
- 30:36brief appearance on Friday Funhouse Keeping up this Friday. Speaking of Bridge Valley,
- 30:40they are one of the sponsors of the show. Are you interested in proving

- 31:07with his auction at myself and all of my cohorts in the building here,
- 31:11we're all excited because there was a fire truck up for auction. I didn't
- 31:15check the sight to see whether that went to anybody or not. I did
- 31:18not bed on the fire truck because Number one, I don't think my wife
- 31:21would let me have a fire truck. Number Two, I'd have to check
- 31:23the h away. I don't know if my homeowners association allows fire trucks.

- 35:00I was so happy, both of them, and then happy to get rid
- 35:02of them. I mean, you can say that it's okay, yeah,
- 35:06but then they were just like the kitchen is so clean when they're not here
- 35:09and there's no dirty clothes or wet towels on the floor. I don't know
- 35:14how. I mean, I know that I've taught them hang up your towel.
- 35:16You know that I have. Yeah, they must have forgotten. It
- 35:20happens. Yeah, I want to start on the on the West side.
- 35:22With gas crisis. We are a week away from the one month anniversary of
- 35:28the league. Ass has been restored, but still not everyone is back totally
- 35:31online. What can you tell us? Our team spent a tremendous amount of
- 35:36time along with the contractors that are out there for Mountain near Gas literally going
- 35:40door to door. I mean, there is no other way to really connect
- 35:45people because some of the challenges that we were finding was for and I'll give
- 35:50you two examples. Somebody who literally works all day and then in the evening
- 35:55comes home and is you know, at nine ten at night going gosh,
- 35:58I miss them and trying to coordinate with them. How do we make sure
- 36:01that somebody is there to let the contractors in and so making that connection.
- 36:08And I'll give props to Captain Hodges and Assistant Chief Jones who literally were going
- 36:15door to door, And then my office was Tiffany and Andrew and Tina on
- 36:21the telephone literally trying to connect people who were calling, are you home,
- 36:25what time will you be home? Let me help you because at this point
- 36:29in time, that's what we're dealing with. And we also dealt with,
- 36:30you know, people who are bedridden. And you know, by the time
- 36:34I got to the door, Amy, by the way, it takes me
- 36:36twenty minutes. I talked to a woman. I understands, let's help you
- 36:38make that connection. And so while there's still our folks who are out we
- 36:44are going door to door making sure that we can get them in, get
- 36:47them with the right folks, and in the meantime, make sure that everyone
- 36:52everyone has heat, has meals and are taking and taking care of Talk about
- 36:57the other groups maybe outside the city. There have been so many that have
- 37:00that have gotten involved, from the United Way to individuals and the community and
- 37:05things of that nature. Talk about that. I mean there are when I
- 37:07say there are literally too many to mention. It would take your show and
- 37:10then Hoppy's entire show, and then some day That's what West Virginians do,
- 37:15and we do it best. We come together in times of need. For
- 37:20sure, there were so many different agency you know, top of mind and
- 37:22tip of tongue, the United Way, Margaret O'Neil, we make fun all
- 37:25the time and say we're going to buy our crown. You know we probably
- 37:29will at some point in time. But just you know, great organizations that
- 37:32are doing good things, including health right on the west side. What a
- 37:37great location. The city and the county were big supporters of establishing that West
- 37:40Side location, and you know, all of their efforts have come to fruition
- 37:45and making sure that people know that the doors open. They do five to
- 37:47seven pm suppers and so that was nice. You know, when you don't
- 37:52have a hot dinner and I'm something hot to eat when it's cold outside,
- 37:55that's you forget does have another cold sandwich? No thank you, but a
- 38:00bowl of hot soup and a hot you know, hot grilled sandwiches is always
- 38:05was always great. So but again, churches and individuals and people. This
- 38:08is always my biggest fear when you start thanking folks hundreds that I have no
- 38:14idea their names, who literally came in uh and donated and gave money anonymously.
- 38:22And that is the thing that I think is so impressive. People that
- 38:24don't want to pat on the back, people that don't want to puff up
- 38:28their chest and regnize me, recognize my organization by the way we want to
- 38:32thank you, but but not doing it for that purpose. There are so
- 38:36many people who you know, don't stand on the mountaintop but you know and
- 38:39shout look at look at me, look what I've done. That who is
- 38:43taking care of our families on the west side. I know your office mountain
- 38:47near gas officials from Westvirgin American Water you mentioned you. None of United Wind
- 38:51other group's been having pretty much daily calls about this situation. Have you been
- 38:55satisfied with the response from the gas and water companies. That almost sounds like
- 39:00a trick question, So I mean yes, and I'll be honest, yes
- 39:05and no, right, I mean yes and no. There's been some criticism
- 39:07about maybe not and this is not the fault of the city obviously, because
- 39:10as your companies we're talking about, but maybe not getting the word out soon
- 39:15or some sort of an alert system or something like that. I know I've
- 39:17had various legislators on there's no question Democrat by the way, Mountain der Gas
- 39:22needs one, and that's going to put the interims for next week. There's
- 39:25a possibility that they're going to be brought in to answer that that there should
- 39:30be some sort of an alert system go out. I think that's smart.
- 39:32I think communication is the number one thing that folks need. And I'll say
- 39:37this, and I think I said this to you the last time we were
- 39:39on together talking about this. Communication is critical. Bad communication. We spend
- 39:45and have spent for the past almost now month, hours and hours every day
- 39:52trying to squash down bad information or rumors of folks. Go to the marrion,
- 39:58give them your credit card. You'll be refunded from the DAJHR to give
- 40:01you a hotel room. No, welcome to twenty twenty three. Don't do
- 40:05that. Call the governor's office. He'll bring you, you know, a
- 40:07hot pot tomorrow. No, there's a system in place. So when you
- 40:10put out bad information on social media. Love social media and it has been
- 40:15helpful in many many ways, but critical information, but it has to be
- 40:20correct and so but there's no question. So I think that I think the
- 40:22fair answer is yes, in some respects know in others. Initially not a
- 40:28great job. Eventually yes, you know, we have unfortunately dealing with something
- 40:35that has never happened before, and there was a lot of confusion and a
- 40:37lot of concern. This has never happened before. In trying to understand what
- 40:43happened, who was impacted and how severely took a hot minute to figure out
- 40:47what is going on, and so that has to be an after action review
- 40:52is mandatory for those companies to do, all of those companies and quite frankly
- 40:58us too. You know, no, it's not While I think we did
- 41:00a good job, I always think that everybody can do better and say,
- 41:05Okay, what did we do really well? What did we do poorly?
- 41:07And let's go back and fix it. There's always a way to improve.

- 41:31Yesterday was the third anniversary of the Charleston Police officer Cassie Johnson passing away.
- 41:37A sad day for the city, but also a day yesterday to kind of
- 41:40look back on her life and career. Your thoughts. Yeah, she was
- 41:45one of the very first officers that I swore into office. I remember that
- 41:52moment, and I also remember standing there in the hospital for days with her
- 41:55mother, Cheryl, and her sister Chelsea, and it was horrible. It
- 42:01is you know when people said when you became mayor you know, did you
- 42:06did you expect all of this? Yes? I expected anything that folks brought
- 42:09my way. I did not anticipate holding by the way many mothers hands while
- 42:15they buried their children. It was awful then, it was awful now.
- 42:21But our police department, our sisters and brothers in blue, that's what they
- 42:27do. They come to gather. You couldn't even stand in the family area
- 42:32at c A MC for those days. And it's a time in which I'll
- 42:37never forget, and a time in which I know that our officers who were
- 42:40there. She is always top of mind and how she how she led her
- 42:46life as an officer is exactly how we should all be. And thanks for
- 42:50bringing up we should all be living our lives. She was so good in
- 42:54that Officer Johnson. Cassie Johnson would never take a lunch that day. She
- 43:00wouldn't take a lunch. She would call her mom or sister and say,
- 43:02Hey, bring me a sandwich, give me some drink. I gotta follow
- 43:05up on this thing. I'm super suspect about this one case I'm doing.
- 43:08I really want to work on this. I really want to spend a little
- 43:10bit more time on this paperwork. She would come in early, leave late,
- 43:15and spend more time trying to figure things out. She was a student
- 43:21every day and she wanted to learn more and do more and not puff up
- 43:24you get, not puff up her chest, not say hey, look at
- 43:28me, look at me. She really wanted to do right. And she
- 43:30was a student every day and really cared for so so many people. And
- 43:38you know, we celebrated her life and her legacy as we do every year,
- 43:43and with all of our officers that we that we lost as well,
- 43:45including Jerry Jones and his family that we think about often and all that they
- 43:52have gone through and will continue to go through. But certainly an impactful and

- 46:30nine or is it Brightwaymaize dot com mayor goodwe is with us. It's Christmas
- 46:36in the city. Every time I say that I think I should I should
- 46:37like break into some love and spoonful of the hot time summer in the city.
- 46:40But it's Christmas in the city. Let's review a little bit. Let's
- 46:44review. Let's talk about to Jolly Brows small Business Saturday and what's going on
- 46:49at the Bark and the economic impact. I mean, it's absolutely I am
- 46:53excited to get the numbers here in January to see the impact. Jolly Brawley
- 47:00we hosted over gold ten thousand people. Of course, that's when the public
- 47:05Outdoor Designated Area, the PODA came in to affect them. We literally were
- 47:08running out of cups. Some businesses were running out of cups. It was
- 47:13fantastic. Again, we can always do better, but I think you know,
- 47:17this being our third fourth year at this, we're really excited about the
- 47:22momentum. It's creative. Talking about momentum, the Dirty Birds Ballpark it hosting.
- 47:30Andy Shea, the owner of the team, told my chief of staff
- 47:34this morning, over thirty five people have already gone through and this is what
- 47:37is impressive. Thirty five different states now we're talking. So we've had thirty
- 47:44five different states that have come through. That that's right, people who have
- 47:46online tickets or have come there. And by the way, I am told
- 47:51I have been there several times, but to buy your online. I bought
- 47:54at the window, but you can buy them online and that is the preference
- 47:58now, especially on nights, because what I have been hearing from folks is
- 48:01it's great, it's super popular, but you don't want to be standing there
- 48:06with two four year olds in the cold waiting to buy a ticket. And
- 48:08if you want to go, it is a dblightthenight dot com. That's a
- 48:12website that you need to use, dblightthenight dot com. And it's so great,
- 48:15and he's added so many more things that you know, ginormous forty foot
- 48:19slide that I slid down on holiday, by the way, it's over there
- 48:22now, which is there is video this? I think I saw video though.
- 48:27Of course my kids are like, Mom, you're so extra. Why
- 48:30did you do that? I said, well, if I'm gonna have children
- 48:31sliding down it, I probably should give it a go myself. But it's
- 48:35a forty foot slide, it's the ferris wheel, it is the skating rink,
- 48:40and it's the maze. It's ours, Dave. You have to give
- 48:45yourself hours to do every single thing you want to do at the ballpark.
- 48:50And then Capital Market their amazing holiday extravaganza that they're having every single weekend.
- 48:59This first weekend knocked it out the park. I don't know if you're gonna
- 49:00have Evan honor An he was on Friday. Great, it's it's so cool
- 49:06again. I keep saying, Hallmark, sit down, you don't know what
- 49:09you're doing any longer. Hold yeah, please cheers. It's just it's incredible
- 49:17people coming together with a great vision about what this city should be, which
- 49:22is vibrant and lively. But the return on investment that we're seeing is fantastic.
- 49:29And you think of Charleston as a you know, a city right here
- 49:31at the confluence of two rivers, and uh, it's a summer city.
- 49:36No it's not. It's a winter city. We're making it happen. And
- 49:39I'll go back to the place in which we started when we started talking about
- 49:44turfing fields right with Chad Robinson my first year in office, almost five years
- 49:49ago. It's not just about baseball. It's not just about making sure games
- 49:53aren't canceled. It's also about talking about concerts. Yeah, because this would
- 49:59not have been possible. It would not happen it absolutely, no way,
- 50:02no, no, you can't do it that way. It would destroyed everything.
- 50:07And so now we have the ability to continue build. And that's what
- 50:12it is about continuing this momentum, building upon every single year. I mean,
- 50:17I was the folks that you had on before from Putnam County and talk
- 50:22about development and talking about getting It doesn't matter if you're doing events, it
- 50:28doesn't matter if it's job development. Every year you have to do something different.
- 50:30You have to reinvent yourself and you have to find a way to improve
- 50:35upon what you're doing every single year. And that's what municipal government should all
- 50:40be about. Not wowing everybody, but saying, okay, what works,
- 50:45what does wow? Folks. This is when you think about Holly Jolly Browley,
- 50:52you think about the ballpark, you think about capital market. This is
- 50:57quality of life. By the way, this is when you will say we
- 51:00want a good quality of life. You better believe we do. We want
- 51:02a safe, fun, vibrant place to go. And that's what that's what
- 51:08this is doing. I want to get to the Christmas parade before we have
- 51:10to go this Thursday, Thursday night, this Thursday. I still sign up
- 51:14if you want to be in it. No, it is. It is
- 51:16the largest Christmas parade we have ever had. So pack a snack, make
- 51:22sure you get some supper, get a chair, get a blanket. Seven
- 51:23o'clock it starts. The theme is toy Land and I already have my Our
- 51:29entire team has their outfit. So you're going to be dressed as some sort
- 51:31of Okay, you can't give us any indications. Okay. Very popular movie
- 51:36with children. My children love this movie more than oxygen when they were growing
- 51:40up. And by the way, it's still popular today. Does that give
- 51:44it away? Well not for me, No, no it doesn't. Well
- 51:47you'll see me. You'll see me wearing this. You'll as soon as you
- 51:51see my hat, you'll go, oh right, I know who she is.
- 51:52All right. So it all starts seven o'clock, seven o'clock this Thursday,
- 51:55downtown Charlestown, all right, on summers, and there's gonna be all
- 51:59kinds of active. Butody's going on to the businesses around there too. I'll
- 52:00try to get to the downtown businesses. Or thrilled. This is exactly what
- 52:04they wanted, all right, Mayor Goodwin, It's always a pleasure to have
- 52:07you on the show. Coming up on the show tomorrow, speaking of the
- 52:09parade, Landel Eugen Murphy Junior is going to be in town. He's going
