- 1:05- Here is this week's devotional.
- 1:08- Hello and welcome to divine five one five
- 1:11- daily prayers with Valerie Rocha.
- 1:14- We are continuing
- 1:15- our September
- 1:16- series
- 1:17- of
- 1:19- how to study the Bible so it changes
- 1:21- your life.
- 1:22- Today's episode, we are going to be tackling
- 1:26- the biggest Bible study mistake that Christians make.
- 1:30- Scripture text comes from James one twenty two
- 1:33- and reads, do not merely listen to the
- 1:36- word.
- 1:37- And so deceive yourselves, do what it says.
- 1:40- So we wanna start the conversation
- 1:43- by,
- 1:44- saying that it is possible to know many
- 1:46- Bible verses and still struggle to apply them.
- 1:49- I think that the biggest thing is, is
- 1:51- that sometimes when we're learning these scriptures,
- 1:54- we don't wanna just feel like we're checking
- 1:56- off a box,
- 1:58- but sometimes there's this disconnect
- 2:00- where we're
- 2:01- memorizing them, but we're not really sure how
- 2:04- to apply them to everyday
- 2:06- life.
- 2:08- And sometimes we just mistake learning for, for
- 2:10- living.
- 2:11- We enjoy discovering new insights, but
- 2:14- God asks us to forgive, trust, wait, or
- 2:17- obey.
- 2:18- And we pump the brakes and hesitate because
- 2:21- application is often harder than information.
- 2:26- I especially find this to be true when
- 2:28- we're
- 2:30- talking about the topic of forgiveness,
- 2:32- because,
- 2:34- the scripture tells us that in the Lord's
- 2:36- prayer, that if we don't forgive, then God
- 2:38- cannot forgive us. And that's a perfect example
- 2:41- of how we're reading something,
- 2:43- but it hits us a certain way. So
- 2:45- we struggle
- 2:47- with
- 2:48- not what it says, but how we'll apply
- 2:51- it because of what it might cost us
- 2:53- to do it.
- 2:54- But when we take the time to do
- 2:57- what it says, we will always come out
- 3:00- ahead and move closer to the throne.
- 3:03- Be more free and liberating from whatever it
- 3:06- is that is holding us, holding us back.
- 3:11- And so
- 3:12- sometimes
- 3:14- the reason why we struggle is because knowledge
- 3:17- is safe, right? If we know it, we
- 3:20- it's like, okay, well, we we we've done
- 3:22- it. Right. We we we've we've memorized the
- 3:25- scripture,
- 3:26- but it's not just about knowing if you're
- 3:29- not actually
- 3:30- applying it, then it can actually do what
- 3:33- it's set out to do.
- 3:34- And so
- 3:36- because of it,
- 3:37- obedience requires
- 3:39- surrender.
- 3:40- And,
- 3:41- when God's word often challenges our comfort or
- 3:44- exposes our attitudes,
- 3:46- is, is going to challenge us right. To,
- 3:49- to make a decision on whether or not
- 3:50- we're going to apply it. And it calls
- 3:53- us to change.
- 3:55- But
- 3:56- remember that transformation
- 3:59- always costs something right.
- 4:01- Case in point, if you are
- 4:05- needing to, to,
- 4:08- shed some weight. Right.
- 4:11- You can know what it is you need
- 4:14- to eat. You can know what it is
- 4:15- you need to do. Right. That's the knowledge
- 4:17- part of it. But if you don't actually
- 4:19- apply
- 4:20- and make the necessary changes, then you're not
- 4:23- going to see the goals or you're not
- 4:24- going to see the results
- 4:26- and the outcome that you want to see
- 4:28- and applying God's word is, is a lot
- 4:30- like that. It's not going to always be
- 4:33- easy, but it will definitely always be beneficial.
- 4:36- And so
- 4:37- the other thing to remember here is that
- 4:40- God's word is so powerful because every passage
- 4:43- invites a response
- 4:45- of some sort. Now we may have to
- 4:47- read the scripture before and after, and, you
- 4:49- know, we always wanna make sure that we're
- 4:51- reading it within proper context and understanding,
- 4:55- the backstory, if you will. So that might
- 4:56- take a little bit more
- 4:58- digging in to find out,
- 5:01- who's what's wise and where's right. But when
- 5:03- scripture reveals something in your heart,
- 5:07- it is not something that you can just
- 5:09- acknowledge,
- 5:10- right? It's gonna, it's gonna affect you in
- 5:12- a certain way. It's going to reveal something
- 5:15- to you and it's going to impact you
- 5:18- in a certain way.
- 5:20- And,
- 5:21- you know, scripture says that his, his word
- 5:23- is, is life changing, right? He says, I
- 5:25- come that you have life and have it
- 5:27- more abundantly.
- 5:28- You can't have life if, if you're not,
- 5:31- you know, eating every day. Right. You're you're
- 5:34- not,
- 5:35- hydrating
- 5:36- every day. Right. And God's word is much
- 5:38- like that. It always hits the point. Right.
- 5:41- And so
- 5:44- we want to pray about it. Right. Cause
- 5:45- that's how we connect
- 5:47- with God.
- 5:49- God talks to us through the word and
- 5:51- we want to implement it because
- 5:54- the truth of the matter is, is that
- 5:55- God is not just
- 5:58- there looking down.
- 6:00- He wants to be right there with us
- 6:03- in the midst of the transformation.
- 6:05- He wants to
- 6:07- be there to encourage us along. And he
- 6:09- does,
- 6:10- whatever it is that we're going through, he's
- 6:12- right there with a word, to encourage us,
- 6:15- to strengthen us, to comfort us,
- 6:18- and to ultimately
- 6:20- help us live this thing out.
- 6:24- And because of it, God's greatest work
- 6:26- will always happen when his truth becomes visible
- 6:29- through our lives.
- 6:31- So
- 6:31- that being said,
- 6:33- let's take
- 6:35- these
- 6:37- learning prayers, right? These learning strategies
- 6:40- and apply them as we go to the
- 6:42- throne,
- 6:44- heavenly father,
- 6:46- help us to become a doer of your
- 6:48- work and not merely
- 6:50- someone who hears it.
- 6:52- Give us the courage to obey you, even
- 6:55- when it stretches our faith or challenges
- 6:58- our comfort,
- 7:00- continue shaping our heart until life reflects the
- 7:04- truth you've placed within us. And we will
- 7:06- bless you in Jesus name.
- 7:08- Amen.
- 7:09- So
- 7:10- always remember God's word wasn't given simply to
- 7:13- inform you.
- 7:15- It was given to transform you.
- 7:18- Scripture tells us, let this mind be in
- 7:20- you, and it's also in Christ Jesus.
- 7:22- That's transformation.
- 7:24- If you were blessed by this episode, definitely
- 7:27- share it and continue growing with us at
- 7:29- divine515.com.
