- 0:20Hey y 'all, thank you so much for diving back
- 0:22in to the Living Free Podcast where this week
- 0:25we're going over part five of the genealogy of
- 0:28Jesus. It's so crazy that we're already at part
- 0:31five and I don't know about you but I feel like
- 0:33I've learned a lot about the history of the timeline
- 0:38and bloodline of Jesus. It's been really crazy
- 0:41to see all these stories that I knew but didn't
- 0:43know that they were connected. Yeah, I'm like
- 0:46really genuinely loving it. So thank you so much
- 0:48for coming back this week and I hope that you're
- 0:51having a great week because I am having an amazing
- 0:54week. This last week, my sister had her baby.
- 0:58It's her second one. He's a boy and I mean after
- 1:0126 hours of labor, supposedly it went well. I've
- 1:05never given birth, so I wouldn't know. And if
- 1:09you are listening to this podcast the day it
- 1:11comes out, I will be on my way to Atlanta to
- 1:14see the band Kamino, which I am very excited
- 1:17for. Anyone who knows me knows that I love the
- 1:19band Kamino. I'm a big fan. I listen to all of
- 1:22their music. bought two t -shirts last time we
- 1:25went to their concert, which is crazy for me
- 1:27because I very rarely buy tour merch unless you're
- 1:30Megamoroni. Actually, those are the only times
- 1:32I've ever bought merch is the Bancomino Megamoroni.
- 1:35Unless I was at the Passion Conference, which...
- 1:38to me doesn't count because that's like totally
- 1:40different that's a conference and like yeah that's
- 1:42just different so anyways super freaking excited
- 1:45to go down to Atlanta I have a couple friends
- 1:47that live down there so I texted them and was
- 1:48like y 'all what should I do while I'm here like
- 1:51what's your top coffee shop where should I shop
- 1:53till I drop dinner we love some good food dinner
- 1:57like where do I get dinner so they sent me their
- 2:00recommendations and I'm pumped and drum roll
- 2:03please we're going to the aquarium and I love
- 2:07Love, love, love the Atlanta Aquarium. My dad
- 2:10lived down in Atlanta off and on for a few years
- 2:13for work. And we went a couple times when I was
- 2:16growing up. And I just love anything about the
- 2:18ocean. Like let me see the sharks, let me see
- 2:21the jellyfish, let me see everything. Anything
- 2:24that I can see, let me see it. So I'm really,
- 2:26really excited to go to the aquarium. Yeah. And
- 2:31it's gonna be, yeah. It's going to be fantastic.
- 2:33I'm so excited. And then from the aquarium and
- 2:36the concert, Mia and my roomie are headed up
- 2:39to Western, Western, Western North Cackalacki.
- 2:44And we're going to go stay at her dad's house
- 2:45and hang out with her mom and do some hiking,
- 2:49drink more coffee as one does. Maybe if we find
- 2:53a cute little small boutique, do some shopping.
- 2:55It's hard in those little towns, I will tell
- 2:56you, just because I'm from a little town. And
- 3:00that's going to be yeah. Speaking of coffee because
- 3:04I keep talking about it today. I have been making
- 3:07Instead of a latte y 'all. I've started just
- 3:10making my iced Americanos now. I was a big Americano
- 3:12girl Gosh, like six seven years ago, which is
- 3:15crazy to say but I loved an Americano loved it
- 3:18Like give me that skull my tongue burn off all
- 3:21my taste buds espresso. Give it to me But I've
- 3:24started making iced Americanos with putting a
- 3:27little tiny drop of cream in it I know not really
- 3:30an Americano anymore and started making lattes
- 3:32because lattes have so many calories and I realized
- 3:34I don't really like the milk that comes with
- 3:37like a latte like that much cream and I was having
- 3:40a hard time lessening it and still getting Like
- 3:43the same consistency because that's the whole
- 3:45point, right? So I've given up and you know,
- 3:48my latte art was getting better. So I think that's
- 3:52why I was making lattes is I was having fun making
- 3:55the latte art and then I realized that I really
- 3:58also enjoy an iced latte just as much. So then
- 4:01I started doing iced lattes and then I was like,
- 4:03you know what? I really don't need all these
- 4:05calories. So let's just make an iced Americano
- 4:09and then throw some cream in there. So basically
- 4:11iced coffee. I'm drinking iced coffee. Yeah,
- 4:14you're right. Absolutely. So today I'm drinking
- 4:16my iced coffee and I put my I love. sorry going
- 4:21on a tangent I love fun little ice cubes so I
- 4:25have like little tiny squared ones I have a little
- 4:27round ones that are supposed to make a shape
- 4:28of a ball that I'm not good at doing I've made
- 4:31like successively two or three ball shaped ice
- 4:34cubes the other ones have been like half half
- 4:37of the ball I don't know what to tell myself
- 4:39or you and then lastly I have these bow shaped
- 4:43ones and the bows always turn out so cute so
- 4:46today and my iced Americano I put, because I'm
- 4:51going to keep calling it that, I put the half
- 4:53balls in the bow shaped ice cubes in it. And
- 4:58it's cute. It's a vibe. I'm loving it. I just
- 5:00love a cute little girly coffee. So I'm here
- 5:02for it. OK, let's talk about what's in. What
- 5:06is in is this fall weather. I know I said it
- 5:09last week. I'm saying it again because it's significantly
- 5:11cooler than it was last week. I mean, we hit
- 5:1465 and I am so excited about it. We had 65 degrees.
- 5:18I mean, it's definitely 7172 by the time the
- 5:21sun's setting. That's okay. In North Carolina,
- 5:24that's fall. So what is in is fall activities.
- 5:28I cannot wait. We are going to do the pumpkin
- 5:30patch. We are going to do a corn maze. We...
- 5:35I'm not going to carve pumpkins though. We might
- 5:38even throw in a couple bonfires. We might get
- 5:41really crazy and throw in a couple bonfires on
- 5:43the beach at the apartment. I'm not sure, but
- 5:46it will happen. i'm really really oh and the
- 5:49nc state fair i cannot wait for the nc state
- 5:52fair i'm so excited i'm so excited i love the
- 5:57nc state fair i love a funnel cake i love the
- 6:00turkey leg that i only eat like one fourth of
- 6:03i a blooming onion oh my gosh i love a blooming
- 6:07onion and the people watching is immaculate at
- 6:10the nc state fair it's so fun because like all
- 6:13kinds of kinds of kinds of people come to the
- 6:16NC State Fair, and I love to just see people
- 6:18be human and function out in the world. It's
- 6:21fun for me. It just is. So I'm so excited. I'm
- 6:25not a rights girl. I'll do a couple, especially
- 6:28if my friend Caitlin with a C talks me into doing
- 6:30them. Like one time we did the swings and I was
- 6:34crying, not out of fear. I just did not like
- 6:37it. and the wind was whipping my face and I literally
- 6:40had tears coming out of my eyes and she was like
- 6:42are you that scared you're crying and I was like
- 6:44no I'm not that scared but like I'm not having
- 6:46fun but then we do it every year ever since as
- 6:50well I do love a ferris wheel I like to see what
- 6:52people have made what they've done and the garden
- 6:55center is so pretty like seeing people's gardens
- 6:58that they've made for the last few months getting
- 7:00ready for this state fair I don't know I love
- 7:03the state fair so I'm so excited to go um okay
- 7:07What is out? I hate to say it. Once again, I
- 7:12I backtracked and once again is sweet treats.
- 7:17Sweet treats are out again. What can I say? I
- 7:20fell back into the habit. I even went and bought
- 7:23ice cream last night. I didn't eat it, but I
- 7:26bought it. I had to know it was in the freezer
- 7:27and I've got to get this under control. So sweet
- 7:31treats are out. It is not going to be an every
- 7:33night thing. I I'm going to be committed to it.
- 7:36It just became like a comfort thing, I think.
- 7:40And again, I'm more of a savory over sweet person
- 7:42and I need to get back to my savory over sweetness.
- 7:46So that's what's out. Anyways, that's all I have
- 7:48for this part of the podcast. Let's go ahead
- 7:51and dive into today's episode. Welcome to part
- 8:00five of the Genealogy of Jesus. Last time, we
- 8:03ended on Ruth and how God used her story just
- 8:06like many others. This time, we're going to pick
- 8:09up back with her son, Obed, and what little we
- 8:12know about him and continue on from there. Obed's
- 8:15name means serving or worshiping. There are many
- 8:18other men in the Bible with his name, like the
- 8:21ones from 2 Samuel or 1 and 2 Chronicles, and
- 8:25truthfully, we know a lot more about them and
- 8:28their stories than we know about this one. This
- 8:31Obed is the son of Ruth and the father of Jesse
- 8:34who is the father of King David and yep that's
- 8:38all we know that's literally it we don't have
- 8:41anything else at least that I've been able to
- 8:43find and I've been scouring everywhere every
- 8:46book every webpage any literally anything anything
- 8:50so yeah that's all I got for you so sorry um
- 8:53so thanks for listening and we'll see you next
- 8:56week I'm just kidding okay But we are going to
- 8:59end it there with Ovid and continue with Jesse
- 9:01and his story. Jesse lives in Bethlehem, yes,
- 9:06that Bethlehem, and Bethlehem was known as the
- 9:08sheep herding town. In 1 Samuel chapter 16, we
- 9:12see God tells Samuel to go to Bethlehem and seek
- 9:15out the next king. Crazy foreshadowing, right?
- 9:19Samuel goes, meets with the elders, and tells
- 9:21Jesse to bring out all his sons because the Lord
- 9:24is going to pick one to be the next king. Jesse
- 9:26brings out seven of his eight sons in verses
- 9:296 -13, which we will read, and we will see how
- 9:32God plays Goldilocks with Jesse's seven sons.
- 9:36Verse 6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Elib and
- 9:39thought, Surely the Lord's anointed stands here
- 9:41before the Lord. But the Lord said to Samuel,
- 9:43Do not consider his appearance or his height,
- 9:46for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look
- 9:49at all the things people look at. People look
- 9:52at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at
- 9:53the heart. Then Jesse called Amenadab and had
- 9:56him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said,
- 9:59The Lord has not chosen this one either. Justin
- 10:02then had Shehaim pass by, but Samuel said, nor
- 10:07has the Lord chosen this one. Jesse had seven
- 10:10of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said
- 10:13to him, the Lord has not chosen these. So he
- 10:16asked Jesse, are these all the sons you have?
- 10:19Jesse answered, there is still the youngest.
- 10:21He is herding the sheep. Samuel said, send for
- 10:24him. We will not sit down until he arrives. So
- 10:26he sent for him and had him brought in. He was
- 10:28glowing with health and had a fine appearance
- 10:31and handsome features. Then the Lord said, Arise
- 10:34and anoint him. This is the one. So Samuel took
- 10:37the horn of the oil, anointed him in the presence
- 10:39of all his brothers, and from that day on, the
- 10:42Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.
- 10:45Samuel then went to Reham. So, God chooses David.
- 10:49David is thought to be around 15 years old when
- 10:53chosen by God through Samuel. David is a small
- 10:56town shepherd boy, just out here keeping his
- 10:58father's sheep. Who else keeps his father's sheep?
- 11:01That's right, Jesus. We will call this connection
- 11:04number one. When David was anointed, the Spirit
- 11:08of the Lord instantly rushed upon him, which
- 11:10is what we also see when Jesus gets baptized
- 11:12in Matthew chapter three, verse 13 through 17.
- 11:16Connection number two, we also see that in verses
- 11:1914 through 22, that the Spirit of God leaves
- 11:22Saul and he falls into dismay. Saul starts to
- 11:25be harassed by an evil spirit that is said to
- 11:28be sent from the Lord. God could have done this
- 11:31for many reasons. 1. The spirit could have asked
- 11:34like they did with Job 2. It could have been
- 11:37punishment of Saul not obeying God 3. It could
- 11:41have been God setting up the scene for David
- 11:43to come in or all of the above. But nonetheless,
- 11:47someone suggests to Saul to have someone come
- 11:49and play an instrument for him while he's being
- 11:51tormented in hopes that the spirit would calm
- 11:54or leave and the person who gets the job ends
- 11:57up being David. In chapter 17, we see the web
- 12:00of David grow. This is where Goliath comes in.
- 12:03Let me set the scene for you. So the Philistines
- 12:06are fighting Israel of the land that belongs
- 12:08to the people of Judah. The same Judah who is
- 12:11in the line of Jesus. Goliath is a monster of
- 12:14a man who landed somewhere between seven and
- 12:18nine -ish feet tall, comes out every single day
- 12:21for 40 days while the battle takes place to talk
- 12:23crap. He says, send someone, just one person
- 12:26out to fight me and if you win and kill me, then
- 12:30my people will serve you. But if we win, then
- 12:33you become our servants. Let's remember the trauma,
- 12:37though, that these people have with being servants
- 12:38in the first place when they came out of Egypt.
- 12:41Well, David is there one day, dropping off supplies
- 12:44for his brothers, and probably a little excited
- 12:46to see the battle because, well, he's a boy.
- 12:48And when he heard the words of Goliath spoke,
- 12:51he basically said, who the heck does this guy
- 12:54think he is? To talk about my god? Excuse me,
- 12:58our god? Like that? And y 'all are just gonna
- 13:00let him? We're going to pick back up in chapter
- 13:0317 with verses 31 -39. What David said was overheard
- 13:08and reported to Saul and Saul sent for him. David
- 13:10said to Saul, Let no one lose heart on account
- 13:13of the Philistine. Your servant will go out and
- 13:15fight him. Saul replied, You are not able to
- 13:18go out and fight against a Philistine. You are
- 13:20only a young man. He has been a warrior since
- 13:23his youth. But David said to Saul, Your servant
- 13:25has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion
- 13:28or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the
- 13:30flock, I went after it, struck it, and rescued
- 13:34the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me,
- 13:36I seized it by its hair, struck it, and killed
- 13:39it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear.
- 13:42This uncircumcised Philistine will be just like
- 13:45them, because he has defied the armies of the
- 13:48living God. Then Saul dressed David in his own
- 14:03tunic. He put on a coat of armor on him and bronze
- 14:06helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword
- 14:09over the tunic and tried walking around because
- 14:11he was not used to them. I cannot go in these,
- 14:14he said to Saul, because I am not used to them,
- 14:16so he took them off. Let's stop here for just
- 14:19one second because there are two things I want
- 14:21to point out to you. One, David was strong, athletic,
- 14:25and had been slowly prepared by God for this
- 14:28battle. Not just physically by killing the lion
- 14:30and the bear, but also emotionally by learning
- 14:33to not fear those beasts and also spiritually,
- 14:37knowing that he had faith and trust in his God.
- 14:402. Saul took time to dress David in his armor,
- 14:44the armor of a king. He knew David and cared
- 14:47for him. It also is a foreshadowing of David
- 14:49taking his place one day, but David wasn't meant
- 14:52to be like Saul or try to be Saul. David's natural
- 14:56weakness was pointed out to him, but God showed
- 14:58his power through David. Saul's armor was too
- 15:02big and too heavy for David. Saul's armor was
- 15:05fed to Saul for Saul, not for David, so David
- 15:09couldn't wear it into battle. Just like David,
- 15:11we can't wear someone else's armor, so David
- 15:14went out in his natural weakness, but God got
- 15:17to show up in his superior power. Okay, let's
- 15:21jump down to verses 42 -47 where it talks about
- 15:24Goliath's battle with David. He looked David
- 15:27over, that being Goliath, and saw that he was
- 15:30little more than a boy, glowing with health and
- 15:32handsome and he despised him. He said to David,
- 15:35Am I a dog that you come to me with a stick?
- 15:38And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
- 15:41Come here, he said, and I will give your flesh
- 15:43to the birds and wild animals. David said to
- 15:46the Philistine, You come against me with sword
- 15:48and spear and javel, but I come against you in
- 15:51the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the
- 15:53armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This
- 15:57day the Lord will deliver you into my hands,
- 15:59and I will strike you down and cut off your head.
- 16:02This very day, I will give the carcass of the
- 16:05Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals
- 16:07and the whole world will know that there is a
- 16:10God in Israel. All those gathered here will know
- 16:12that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord
- 16:15saves for the battle is the Lord's and he will
- 16:18give all of you into our hands. Why do I get
- 16:22the feeling that David is definitely the Gen
- 16:24Z of his time? David wins the famous battle that
- 16:27we all know and life continues on for him. David
- 16:30becomes the closest friend Jonathan, Saul's son,
- 16:34and marry Saul's daughter as well. At the end
- 16:36of chapter 18 we see Saul grow to hate David.
- 16:39Saul sees that God is with David and that causes
- 16:42him to fear David. Chapter 19 starts the persecution
- 16:46from Saul. Saul goes mad. David has the chance
- 16:49to kill him but decides not to take it and Saul
- 16:52dies by the sword in battle. Saul's blood never
- 16:54ends up on David's hands. During this time frame,
- 16:57though, David is being loved by Saul. Saul is
- 17:00like, I love you, we have history, let's make
- 17:03peace. And then he switches to, I will kill you.
- 17:06David flees again and again. Eventually, David
- 17:08realizes how truly unhealthy Saul clearly is,
- 17:12and he flees for his life for good. David hides
- 17:15in houses with other kings and caves and is even
- 17:18betrayed. Sound familiar? Connection number three?
- 17:22In chapter 21, David ends up in Gath, the very
- 17:25land that Goliath was from. People recognized
- 17:28him, which he didn't love, so he started acting
- 17:30crazy. And in verses 13 through 15, which we're
- 17:34about to read, so he pretended to be insane in
- 17:37their presence. And while he was there, So you
- 17:50see the king is like, we have nothing to fear
- 18:03of this crazy man and my gods know I don't need
- 18:05any more crazy people around so send him away.
- 18:08That's when David goes to hide in a cave. From
- 18:11the cave, David gets bold again, re -enters society,
- 18:14ends up saving a city after asking God's permission,
- 18:17which God gives him, and then he moves on. In
- 18:2023, Saul is like a dog with a bone and is still
- 18:24after David. And in chapter 24, David gets the
- 18:27chance to kill Saul, but God doesn't give him
- 18:30permission to, so he doesn't. Chapter 25, David
- 18:34has made his way around the country. His name
- 18:36is a household name. There was a very rich man
- 18:39who was sharing his sheep in the wilderness and
- 18:41let's remember that David does know something
- 18:44about sheep and how to shepherd them. A feast
- 18:46was coming up and David sent his servants to
- 18:49ask this very rich guy if he could spare some
- 18:51food for the feast because 1. David is still
- 18:54on the run and 2. They are in the wilderness
- 18:57and 3. David has been looking out for this guy's
- 19:00sheep and shepherds this whole time. This guy
- 19:02has the nerve to say, who is David? Never heard
- 19:05of him. And if I have heard of him, not saying
- 19:08I have, but if I had, how could I know his servants
- 19:11haven't departed from him? And this isn't a scam.
- 19:15But the rich guy's wife, Abigail, knows better.
- 19:17In fact, she's described as discerning and beautiful.
- 19:21Curly Pot makes loaves of bread, packs up the
- 19:23goods, and delivers them to David herself because
- 19:26her husband might be full of himself and act
- 19:28like he doesn't know who David is, but she sure
- 19:31does. So, our girl Abby is on her donkey, sees
- 19:35David, falls on her knees before him, asks forgiveness
- 19:38and takes the blame for her husband. And verse
- 19:4132 -35 David says, Praise be to the Lord, the
- 19:45God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet
- 19:47me. May you be blessed for your good judgment.
- 19:49for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from
- 19:52avenging myself with my own hands. Otherwise,
- 19:55as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives,
- 19:58who has kept me from harming you. If you had
- 20:00not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging
- 20:03to Nabal, a .k .a. the rich guy, would have been
- 20:06left alive by daybreak. Then David accepted from
- 20:09her hand what she had brought him and said, Go
- 20:11home in peace. I have heard your words and grant
- 20:14your request. Abby goes home, lets her husband
- 20:17enjoy his feast, but when he sobers the next
- 20:20day, she tells him what she's been up to, and
- 20:23then he died. From the shock, from the lord,
- 20:25from a heart attack, he died. David hears that
- 20:28the rich guy died, decides he wants Abby to be
- 20:31his wife, so he sends his servant to go get the
- 20:34beautiful, discerning woman, and she comes back
- 20:36with them and marries him. He also marries some
- 20:39other girl named Jizzrel. Jizzrel? Yeah, Jizzrel.
- 20:43Now, you might be wondering, Wasn't he married
- 20:45to Saul's daughter? Why, yes he was, but Saul
- 20:49took her back and gave her to someone else to
- 20:51be their wife, which high key is so wrong because
- 20:54she did love David. In chapter 26, David spares
- 20:58Saul again because again, God told him not to
- 21:01kill Saul. And in chapter 27, David flees again
- 21:05into enemy territory with 600 men and they make
- 21:08peace for the time being because in chapter 29,
- 21:11they reject him and send him on his way. Chapter
- 21:1430 gets kind of crazy though because David's
- 21:17two wives get kidnapped and all of his children
- 21:20and all of his men's children and well basically
- 21:23anything that belonged to David or his men got
- 21:25taken away while they were away in battle. David's
- 21:28men are so upset that they speak about stoning
- 21:31him, their own leader. Let's look at verses four
- 21:34through six. Verse four. So David and his men
- 21:36wept aloud until they had no strength left to
- 21:39weep. David's two wives had been captured. David
- 21:42was greatly distressed because the men were talking
- 21:44of stoning him. Each one was better in his spirit
- 21:47because of his sons and daughters. But David
- 21:49found strength in the Lord his God. Notice how
- 21:52David is constantly trying to strengthen himself
- 21:55through God and not in his own ability. In verse
- 21:597, we see David ask the priest for this garment
- 22:01called an ethoid, which is a vest -like thing
- 22:05that priests wore when serving in the presence
- 22:08of God or facilitating oracle guidance. David
- 22:12asked God if he could go after his wife and children,
- 22:15and God said yes. So David goes, defeats the
- 22:18enemies as usual, and gets all that is his and
- 22:21his men's back. We're going to stop here while
- 22:24David still looks good and pick up again on David
- 22:27in part 6. But for now, let's recap. Obed is
- 22:31the son of Ruth, the father of Jesse. Jesse was
- 22:35the father of David, a sassy shepherd boy who
- 22:37was overlooked by his family and culture, but
- 22:40God sought him for himself. God sought the overlooked
- 22:43and desired him for himself and his plans. David
- 22:46was a young man who conquered much, defeated
- 22:49beasts, was patient with God's plan. He allowed
- 22:51his faith and love for God to dictate more than
- 22:54his own fears or desires. He felt much but sought
- 22:57God and God's permission in all, but when he
- 23:00didn't, that's when things didn't work out for
- 23:02him. He had his first wife taken away from him,
- 23:05his bestie died, he was betrayed, and at one
- 23:08point his own men thought to turn against him,
- 23:11but he remains to seek his strength in the Lord.
- 23:25All right, well that's all I have for you for
- 23:26part five of the genealogy of Jesus. I hope that
- 23:30you enjoyed hearing about David's story because
- 23:32really that's the one we had the most info on,
- 23:35so much so we have to do a part two of part five.
- 23:39But I hope that you will come back for part six
- 23:41to hear about how God uses David's sins and downfall
- 23:46because we're all human and no one is perfect
- 23:49and some of us are really bad people as we're
- 23:51about to see with David. but God brings redemption
- 23:54in all. Anyways, thank you so much for listening
