- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 6th of
- 0:15August and you have tapped on Play.
- 0:18I am the Genie in Your podcast Machine and Boop here.
- 0:22I am you and me. We are going to read some of
- 0:24God's word today, and today is an epic handing over of the
- 0:29range. I don't know if you have ever
- 0:31had a point in your life where you've had to hand over control
- 0:34of something that was very precious to you over to someone
- 0:37else. Did you hand down a family
- 0:39heirloom recipe to someone else? Did you have to leave a beloved
- 0:43job that you had been in for ages and have to do a hand over
- 0:46to the next person or whatever the the situation?
- 0:49This is exactly what we are encountering today as Moses
- 0:53after spending all these years as the leader of the people of
- 0:58Israel. He is getting old and he is
- 1:01handing over control of these people, the burden of
- 1:04responsibility to the next guy. That is what we'll hear.
- 1:08And then unfortunately, God, knowing all things throughout
- 1:13time, is going to predict what's going to happen in the future.
- 1:16But we'll get to that in a SEC. Let us crack open the book of
- 1:19Deuteronomy and read together Deuteronomy chapter 31.
- 1:33When Moses had finished giving these instructions to all the
- 1:36people of Israel, he said, I am now 120 years old and I'm no
- 1:43longer able to lead you. The Lord has told me you will
- 1:47not cross the Jordan River, but the Lord your God himself will
- 1:51cross over ahead of you. He will destroy the nations
- 1:55living there, and you will take possession of their land.
- 2:00Joshua will lead you across the river just as the Lord promised.
- 2:04The Lord will destroy the nations living in the land, just
- 2:08as He destroyed Scion and Ogg, the kings of the Amorites.
- 2:13The Lord will hand over to you the people who live there, and
- 2:17you must deal with them as I have commanded you.
- 2:20So be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid and do not
- 2:24panic before them, for the Lord, your God, will personally go
- 2:28ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor
- 2:31abandon you. Then Moses called for Joshua,
- 2:35and as all Israel watched, he said to him, Be strong and
- 2:40courageous, for you will lead these people into the land that
- 2:44the Lord swore to their ancestors He would give them.
- 2:48You are the one who will divide it among them as their grants of
- 2:51land. Do not be afraid or discouraged,
- 2:55for the Lord will personally go ahead of you.
- 2:58He will be with you. He will neither fail you nor
- 3:02abandon you. So Moses wrote this entire body
- 3:07of instruction in a book and gave it to the priests who
- 3:11carried the ark of the Lord's covenant and to the elders of
- 3:14Israel. Then Moses gave them this
- 3:17command at the end of every 7th year, the year of release,
- 3:23during the festival of shelters. You must read this book of
- 3:26instruction to all the people of Israel when they assembled
- 3:29before the Lord your God at the place He chooses.
- 3:33Call them all together, men, women, children, and the
- 3:37foreigners living in your towns, so they may hear this book of
- 3:41instruction and learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully
- 3:45obey all the terms of these instructions.
- 3:49Do this so that your children who have not known these
- 3:52instructions will hear them and will learn to fear the Lord your
- 3:55God. Do this as long as you live in
- 3:59the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.
- 4:03Then the Lord said to Moses, The time has come for you to die.
- 4:08Call Joshua and present yourself at the Tabernacle, so that I may
- 4:13Commission him there. So Moses and Joshua went and
- 4:17presented themselves at the Tabernacle, and the Lord
- 4:20appeared to them in a pillar of cloud that stood at the entrance
- 4:23to the sacred tent. The Lord said to Moses, You are
- 4:28about to die and join your ancestors.
- 4:32After you are gone, these people will begin to worship foreign
- 4:36gods, the gods of the land where they are going.
- 4:39They will abandoned and break my covenant that I have made with
- 4:43them. Then my anger will blaze forth
- 4:45against them. I will abandoned them, hiding my
- 4:49face from them, and they will be devoured.
- 4:52Terrible trouble will come down on them, and on that day they
- 4:56will say these disasters have come down on us because the Lord
- 5:00is no longer among us. At that time I will hide my face
- 5:05from them on account of all the evil they commit by worshipping
- 5:08other gods. So write down the words of this
- 5:12song and teach it to the people of Israel.
- 5:15Help them learn it so it may serve as a witness for me
- 5:19against them. For I will bring them into the
- 5:22land I swore to give their ancestors, a land flowing with
- 5:26milk and honey. There they will become
- 5:29prosperous, eat all the food they want, and become fat.
- 5:34But they will begin to worship other gods.
- 5:37They will despise me and break my covenant.
- 5:40And when great disasters come down on them, this song will
- 5:43stand as evidence against them, for it will never be forgotten
- 5:47by their descendants. I know the intentions of these
- 5:50people even now, before they have entered the land I swore to
- 5:54give them. So that very day, Moses wrote
- 5:58down the words of the song and taught it to the Israelites.
- 6:02Then the Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun with these
- 6:06words. Be strong and courageous, for
- 6:10you must bring the people of Israel into the land I swore to
- 6:13give them. I will be with you.
- 6:17When Moses had finished writing this entire book of instructions
- 6:20in a book, he gave this command to the Levites who carried the
- 6:24ark of the Lord's covenant. Take this book of instruction
- 6:28and place it inside the ark of the Covenant of the Lord your
- 6:32God, so it may remain there as a witness against the people of
- 6:37Israel. For I know how rebellious and
- 6:40stubborn you are. Even now, while I'm still alive
- 6:43and I'm here with you. You have rebelled against the
- 6:45Lord. How much more rebellious will
- 6:48you be after my death? Now summon all the elders and
- 6:52officials of your tribes so that I can speak to them directly and
- 6:57call heaven and earth to witness against them.
- 7:00I know that after my death, you will become utterly corrupt and
- 7:04will turn from the way I've commanded you to follow.
- 7:08In the days to come. Disaster will come down to you,
- 7:12and you will do what is evil in the Lord's sight, making him
- 7:16very angry with your actions. So Moses recited this entire
- 7:22song publicly to the assembly of Israel,
- 7:36our Lord. It's with such mixed feelings
- 7:38that we read this chapter that you know what is to come, and
- 7:43you know that your people are going to forget you and turn
- 7:46their backs on you. But still you come good with
- 7:50that promise you made their ancestors to gift them that
- 7:53land, even though you know it's going to go horribly wrong as
- 7:56they turn away from you and worship those other gods.
- 8:01Our Lord, you know everything outside of time and space.
- 8:05You see all. And Lord, you know everything
- 8:09about us, and you know just how broken and corrupted our hearts
- 8:13are too. Yet you still choose to love us,
- 8:16even though it hurts you when we choose something other than your
- 8:21way. But Lord, beyond all of that,
- 8:25you have planned to rescue us from the very beginning, and
- 8:30that rescue is sending us your son so that he could take on him
- 8:34the punishment that we deserve and wipe clean our slate so that
- 8:39we come before you perfectly restored and able to come into
- 8:44your glorious presence, our wonderful Father.
- 8:48Oh, you have made a way so that we can be with you and be
- 8:52restored and be whole. Thank you for this generosity
- 8:56and thank you for Jesus. And so we come to you now,
- 9:00wrinkles and all, covered over by the perfect blood of Christ,
- 9:05in whose name we pray. Amen.
