- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Friday, it's the 11th of
- 0:15July, and here we are at the end of another week.
- 0:19Happy Friday to you. Yep, you know what that means.
- 0:22We get to sit back and hear some of Solomon's wisdom through the
- 0:26ages delivered to us. And just so we don't get too
- 0:30full of ourselves thinking that we are the holders, the
- 0:33exclusive holders of such wisdom.
- 0:36As I said way back when we first started, the book of Proverbs
- 0:41also draws on a lot of the other wisdom that came from different
- 0:45traditions, such as Egyptian wisdom literature.
- 0:48And there's a lot of overlap, especially in themes of humanity
- 0:52and restraint and justice. So these themes that God had
- 0:57shown and and kind of nurtured in other parts of his people
- 1:00around the world are captured here as well, delivered to us so
- 1:05that we get this incredibly broad, incredibly holistic
- 1:09collection of proverbs. How fantastic.
- 1:13All right, you're ready to keep going.
- 1:14You're ready to keep hearing these droplets of goodness.
- 1:18Excellent. Me too.
- 1:20Let us read together, friends. Proverbs, 1419 to 24.
- 1:35Evil people will bow before good people.
- 1:39The wicked will bow at the gates of the godly.
- 1:43The poor are despised even by their neighbours, while the rich
- 1:47have many friends. It is a sin to belittle one's
- 1:52neighbour. Blessed are those who help the
- 1:55poor. If you plan to do evil, you will
- 2:00be lost. If you plan to do good, you will
- 2:04receive unfailing love and faithfulness.
- 2:08Work brings profit, but mere talk lends to poverty.
- 2:16Wealth is a crown for the wise. The effort of fools yields only
- 2:21foolishness. And again, evil people will bow
- 2:28before good people. The wicked will bow at the gates
- 2:31of the godly. The poor are despised even by
- 2:37their neighbours, while the rich have many friends.
- 2:43It is a sin to belittle one's neighbour.
- 2:45Blessed are those who help the poor.
- 2:50If you plan to do evil, you will be lost.
- 2:53If you plan to do good, you will receive unfailing love and
- 2:57faithfulness. Work brings profit, but mere
- 3:02talk leads to poverty. Wealth is a crown for the wise.
- 3:09The effort of fools yields only foolishness.
- 3:22Our Lord, we see in these proverbs your truth, that when
- 3:27we start to be proud of ourselves, we start to think
- 3:30that we are indeed better than others.
- 3:32We find ourselves in strife, but blessed are those who don't
- 3:37belittle their neighbours, but who help the poor.
- 3:41Lord, help us to keep our feet firmly grounded on the ground
- 3:45and that as we look around us, we can see those people around
- 3:48us who need us, who need the gifts that you have given us.
- 3:52Not that we're so clever with ourselves or the resources that
- 3:56you have blessed us with. Lord, help us always remember
- 4:01that we are your children, blessed beyond measure, and that
- 4:05everything that we have is a gift from you.
- 4:08Or help us live generously, blessing those who need our
- 4:13help, need our support, need our presence, need our encouragement
- 4:20so that we can make this place more like your Kingdom, Lord,
- 4:24where everybody has their needs met.
- 4:28So Lord, grow in us this wisdom that we can be more like You and
- 4:35always look to bless rather than simply be blessed.
- 4:40And we know that no matter what we do and how good or bad we are
- 4:44at blessing others, we are blessed so much more than we
- 4:47could ever fathom. And so we thank you and we thank
- 4:50you for the biggest blessing of all, and that's you, Jesus, and
- 4:53everything you've done for us. So we pray all of this in your
- 4:57saving name, Amen.
