In which we are introduced to Mr Hoopdriver, a modest draper’s assistant of unremarkable appearance but remarkable bruises, which tell a tale of earnest, if clumsy, apprenticeship to the art of cycling. The scene closes on evening preparations and advice exchanged in his lodgings, setting the stage for his forthcoming, hopeful expedition on two wheels.
