- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And today we're going to be talking about the three types of burnout, how to recognize them and how to overcome them.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Burnout is something that many of us are facing these days.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So let me just start off by asking: do you ever feel um physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted and resting doesn't help?
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Or are you quick to get angry and lash out maybe at your partner or your children or even a friend for even the smallest thing?
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you find yourself feeling cynical towards work, your relationships, or just life, and want to just to just be isolated or be up on your own.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: These could be signs of burnout.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And burnout is commonly linked to chronic stress, whether it be at work or in your personal life.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: It is actually recognized by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: However, um, there are several different types of burnout.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So a lot of times people, when they will talk about burnout, they just naturally assume it's just stress at work.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Um, however, there like I said, there are these different types that I want to cover today, but let's just sort of re-revisit burnout in general.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Burnout is a condition that extends well beyond being overworked and overwhelmed.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: It is a state of emotional and physical exhaustion that's brought on by prolonged chronic stress.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: You are definitely at an increased risk of burnout if you are facing chronic stress and juggling everything in your life.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: While stress can actually motivate us, so we talk about this a lot in athletics, that when an athlete gets on the field, there is a sense of stress and it can motivate them to do better, or even young adults or teens who are getting ready for a test, or even us adults who have a project or presentation, there's a sense of stress that comes along with it, which motivates us to do better.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: However, it's the chronic stress, the chronic overwhelm that ends up disturbing the hormonal system and puts us in this fight or flight and doesn't allow us ever to come out of that fight or flight, which makes getting uh recuperating and finding our place of um that window of tolerance more and more difficult.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And as a result of that prolonged stress, that's when we start feeling it mentally, emotionally, and physically and can lead to burnout.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, the constant stress that leads to burnout may also be a result of just continual thought processes that you have.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: So, for example, stress and emotional wariness can actually be caused by things like perfectionism or self-criticism or the blooming beliefs or listening to the inner critic.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: So, what are some signs of a person experiencing burnout?
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Many high achievers who strive for excellence are absolutely passionate about not just their jobs, but everything that they're involved in.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, but they can apt they can definitely be at risk for overload burnout.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Um, perfectionists who might not see themselves as valuable if they don't meet these really high standards are predisposed to burnout as well.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So even though you may need to take a break because long-term stress is bad, uh what ends up happening is you don't, and you end up actually feeling overwhelmed.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So signs of burnout may include anxiety and depression, a constant lack of energy, physical exhaustion that just does not seem to get better with rest, feeling powerless and hopeless, um, a lack of motivation and not just motivation at work, but even motivation for things that used to bring you joy in your in your life.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Um, a sense of isolation or detachment or wanting to isolate and detach, being cynical.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: You might notice changes in your appetite or sleep, disturb sleep, low productivity, aches and pains, and uh, and you might also notice um more use of different substances in order to numb.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: So the three types of burnouts.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: There's the overload burnout, which usually happens when you are continually overworked or striving for achievement, and that ends up costing you in your personal world in terms of your health and well-being.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: High-achieving professionals who work hard and constantly feel as if they need to catch up are definitely people who might be sufferers or overload burnout.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: If you work long hours or you are working remotely and you're juggling various roles and responsibilities, and you are finding it difficult to find any type of balance, you might be on the path to overload burnout.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: There's also the underchallenged burnout.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Boredom actually can lead to burnout.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Underchallenged burnout is actually the opposite of overload burnout, and it can occur when you don't feel stimulated by your job, by your relationships, or just by your activities that you're involved in.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: And so you might find your work life or your life boring and unfulfilling, and that lack of stimulation can result in more lack of motivation, and then you find yourself stuck in life and feeling apathetic and frustrated.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And this apathy can actually lead to burnout.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So people with underchallenged burnout just might feel underappreciated and just stuck in a rut and stagnant because of their current situation, which keeps them from developing and growing.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And then this third type of burnout is the neglected burnout.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Neglected burnout is also known as worn-out burnout and is the outcome of struggling to keep up with all of the responsibilities of one's job and everything else that life is throwing at them and ultimately feeling demoralized and frustrated.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: If you're suffering from neglected burnout, you might actually lose interest in your job and dread going to work.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: You might lose interest in the other activities that you're doing because, again, you're feeling underappreciated.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Working in a toxic environment with poor leadership and a lack of information and structure can also lead to these feelings of stress and insecurity and might lead to this idea of neglected burnout.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's great to know about these types of burnouts, but what do we do if we're feeling burned out?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Well, the truth is burnout is complex, but it's absolutely something that can be worked on and manageable.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: The very first thing is to make self-care a priority, making sure that you're practicing ways to feel grounded, to um identify what it is that you need and to take time to um make those part of your everyday routine, which I know sounds counterintuitive, especially if you have overload burnout, you it's already feeling stressed and overwhelmed.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: But the truth is, if we don't take the time to address that self-care, that pattern doesn't stop.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: So, for instance, finding time to um make sure that you're adding in perhaps a ri an exercise routine, or if you're noticing that your sleep is routinely disturbed, paying attention to how and ways that you can work on your nighttime routine, making time for friends and family, and um making sure that you're having that that support in as well.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Uh standing up for yourself, using your voice, um, making sure that if you're needing something, you're able to voice it.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Uh setting boundaries is really important when you're feeling burned out.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: It's recognizing what you can say yes to and what you need to say no to, and make and giving yourself permission to do that.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Uh in today's day and age, there are so many opportunities to um find ways to help manage things like stress.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: There are so many apps out there.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, especially mindfulness is a great tool to utilize when you're feeling stressed.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Mindfulness is all about getting back into the present moment.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: It's taking time to pay attention to those things are absolutely vital for combating stress and overwhelm.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Potentially reaching out to somebody who can help work through uh the stress, the overwhelm, and the burnout is obviously another way that you can work through it.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: If you're finding yourself feeling like you are burned out and you're needing support beyond doing it on your own, by all means, feel free to reach out to me at any time at chatwithcomedy.com.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: But above all, it's really important for you to, if you're noticing any of these as signs that seem like they've resonated with you, that you slow down and ask yourself where might you be uh needing to perhaps delegate or again saying no to certain things in order to giving yourself more time for your own self-care and the ability to bring down your stress levels.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: And of course, until next time, stay well.
