- 0:24Ken Paxton and James Tallarico, one of the marquee U.S. Senate races
- 0:27of the midterms, had Democrats pushing to break a thirty year losing
- 0:31streak in the state on Tuesday, and Republicans scrambling to defend both
- 0:34a pivotal stronghold and an increasingly fragile Senate majority. The campaign has
- 0:40tested voters tolerance for past scandals that have shadowed Paxton, Texas's Republican
- 0:44Attorney General, and whether Talicarica's religion infused populist message can blaze a
- 0:49path to victory for Democrats in
- 0:51a state that President Donald Trump easily carried two years ago. Texas
- 0:56has not elected a Democrat to a statewide office since nineteen ninety
- 1:00four, but a unique cascade of events set the stage for one
- 1:03of the nation's most heated and expensive campaigns, and Republicans fear they
- 1:08could lose. Paxton defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn in a combative primary
- 1:13with the help of
- 1:14a late endorsement from Trump, even though Senate Republican leaders feared that
- 1:19Paxton would be far more vulnerable because of his years of legal
- 1:22troubles, including accusations of corruption. At the same time voters have become
- 1:27increasingly frustrated over high costs for gas, groceries, health care and more,
- 1:32and the war with Iran sapping Trump's and Republicans popularity. Tallarico centered
- 1:38his campaign on portraying Paxton's as the face of a corrupt political
- 1:42system that allows billionaires to wield outsized political power while prices rise
- 1:46for the rest of the country. He also tried to woo moderate
- 1:49Republicans and independents put off by Paxton. Paxton pinned his hopes on
- 1:55firing up Republican voters who have historically outnumbered Democrats in Texas to
- 1:59turn out at the polls. He campaigned with Trump several times, and
- 2:03then president amplified Paxton's attack that Tal Arico is too progressive for
- 2:07the Lone Star State because of past statements, including that God is
- 2:11non binary. Paxton has been dogged by past scandals. The political climate
- 2:17was already favorable for Democrats from coast to coast this year, with
- 2:21many people upset with Trump on issues such as the war in
- 2:24Iran and the soaring costs of living. Paxton was further weighed down
- 2:29by a string of legal and ethical problems, including being impeached in
- 2:33twenty twenty three and then acquitted by his own party on corruption
- 2:36accusations, along with a federal corruption investigation that was closed with no
- 2:41charges. During the impeachment trial there were allegations of marital infidelity, and
- 2:46his wife is now divorcing him on biblical grounds. Tallerico hammered Paxton’s
- 2:51on those ethical questions in an attempt to win over Republican and
- 2:55independent voters, but Tallerico rarely maligned the Republican Party. The issue is
- 3:00less a question of right versus left, he often said, and more
- 3:03about the Uber rich versus everyone else. Tallerico's argument was supercharged after
- 3:09Elon Musk, the world's richest man in Texas resident, became a major
- 3:13donor in the race. Musk contributed a total of one hundred fifty
- 3:16eight million dollars to the Senate Leadership Fund, the same amount that
- 3:20the fund then gave to Texas Pack, the largest contributor to Paxton's
- 3:24campaign. Musk also gave ten million dollars to the Paxton supporting Lone
- 3:28Star Liberty Pack. While the investment helped blanket the state in anti
- 3:32Tala Rico ads, the Democrats started naming Musk's donation in his stump
- 3:37speech as the epitome of the moneyed influence that he says has
- 3:40corrupted politics. Talarico's past comments become a target. While Paxton
- 3:46discussed rising costs, he focused more on framing Talarico as too far
- 3:50left for Texas. Paxton, considered a culture war pugilist in some conservative
- 3:55circles, pointed to the Democrat naming his favorite drag queen in Texas,
- 4:00and previously stating there were six sexes. Talt Arico has worked to
- 4:04moderate his past statements on gender questions, calling them cringy. He said
- 4:09he opposes transgender athletes playing women's sports if it endangers safety or
- 4:13fairness. He often took a pastoral approach with voters, presenting himself as
- 4:18an earnest listener to their concerns, and pledging to salve them if
- 4:22elected. Culture war issues have helped propel Paxton to prominence as a
- 4:27state attorney general eager to use his position for partisan aims, including
- 4:32leading a failed lawsuit that sought to overturn the twenty twenty election
- 4:36after Trump claimed without evidence that it was stolen.
