- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What in the world can an airline crash teach us about our brain, um, our behavior and why it's so hard to change?
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, continuing in the vein we've been in, and which is kind of what I always love to talk about is what's what's blocking us from the life we're currently living and the life we want to live, and um what gets in the way.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And I find that most of it, like I like to say this to people, uh, the greatest blockage, the greatest hindrance, the greatest obstacles between you and the life you want are inside of you, not outside.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And um that's just an it's a very empowering perspective.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So let me just read you a few thoughts from this uh an article.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Um I don't remember what paper it's in.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Um I don't think it was the New York Times, but it might have been.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Got it off the internet, of course.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And it says this here's the here's the title.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: In in the Lion air crash, Lions the Airline, black box data reveals pilots' struggle to regain control.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So listen to what it says.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Data from the jetliner that crashed into the Java C last month shows the pilots fought to save the plane almost from the moment it took off, as the Boeing 737's nose was repeatedly forced down.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Apparently, now this is what I want you to catch, apparently, by an automatic system receiving incorrect sensor readings.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: The information from the flight data recorder, contained in a preliminary report prepared by Indonesian crash investigators and released on Wednesday, documents a fatal tug of war between man and machine, man, machine, with the plane's nose forced dangerly downward, dangerously downward, over two dozen times during the 11-minute flight.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So here's what's going on.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: They take off, everything seems fine, but somehow something triggered one of the safety systems built into the airplane, and the system kicked in, and it was trying to direct the plane in a direction that under certain circumstances would be the exact correct thing to do.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: But when there's nothing wrong, it's the exact wrong thing to do.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And so the autopilot, if you will, it's it's it wasn't the literal autopilot, but it's a safety system built in, and it takes control and it forces the airplane into a movement that is not just counterproductive, but tragically dangerous, and the pilots were fighting it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, I think we've since found out, at least from what I've seen, that there's a very simple way to turn it off, and um whatever, that's a whole different subject.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: But here's my point.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: My point is that's kind of what I've been trying to get at, and what I've been talking to you about, what I've learned over um over 30 years working with people is um, like you might say it this way you have a lazy but really smart brain.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: In other words, your your brain, man, it's phenomenal, it's in it's incredible what your brain's capable of doing.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: You know, one of the books I've read recently says it's the most complicated, um, efficient.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: They didn't use the word miraculous because it wasn't a Christian book, uh, entity in the entire universe.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: And in other words, the brain is like crazy cool.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: But at the same time, um, it's kind of lazy.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And what I mean by that is uh it burns calories, and like every other part of your body, its goal is to keep you alive, and um it wants to conserve burning calories.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: So one of the ways it conserves calories is by um building repetitive activities into scripts, and we've talked about this before, but but what I'm getting at is, and uh and then by the way, I said uh I posted a little bit ago uh a little set of notes that I'm gonna follow here in just a second.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: So, what am I saying?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: What your brain does is as you're you know, you're inside your mother, and then you're born and you grow, you know, uh you're picking up information uh based on what's around you and offered to you, and uh by the way, that you did not get to choose, and you're developing beliefs, thoughts, theories, responses, reactions, um, defenses.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Um, how do I go after what I want?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: How do I protect myself from what I don't want?
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Now, here's the interesting thing is the majority, when I say majority, I don't mean 51%, I mean like 90% of that activity is happening outside of your conscious awareness.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: In other words, you don't you don't, you know, um reach up to your dad to be hugged and held and he's too busy and whatever, and you think to yourself, oh gee, I must not be important enough for him to spend time with me.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: You don't think that it's happening what you might call subrationally or subverbally, and later you add words to it, later you have phrases that you say to yourself, uh, you know, I've told you one of mine, you're lazy, you'll never amount to anything.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: And I just I just acquired a belief system that I didn't work hard enough, never was going to, because fundamentally I'm just a loser.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And so I thought I was destined to underperform, you might say.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Well, what happens is those those experiences, those moments, those learnings become part of your brain's autopilot system.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: In other words, instead of having to think every time you face a situation, your brain pulls up out of past learnings and oh, I know how to act in this situation.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And in essence, what kicks in is an autopilot-like system.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And what happens is often, just like this airplane, and again, tragically, but you, the pilot, are struggling with the autopilot.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Sometimes too late, you know, it's after the fact, which is better than nothing.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: But sometimes even during it, you're like, what, what am I, why am I reacting this way?
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Why am I feeling this way?
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Why am I saying these things?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And and it's coming from a part of your brain that is goal is efficiency and survival.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: And um, so what I want to do is just throw a few thoughts at you.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Like I said, there's a there's a post ahead of this that has these notes, and I'm just gonna read them to you, but I thought I'd throw the notes out there just to give you a chance to look at it.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: All right, and this is honestly, it's a piece of a teaching that I did one time before.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And eventually I want to get to where we make these more available to you.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Your mindset determines your reality, and and what I mean by mindset is a set of ideas or concepts.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: In Bible words, we might say beliefs and thoughts.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: 1 John 4, 16 says, we've come to know and believe.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: We've come to know and believe.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: It goes on to say we've come to know and believe the love that God has for us.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: But the bottom line is by this stage of your life, if you're 5, 7, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, whatever, um, you have come over a process of time and interaction.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: You've come to know some stuff and you've come to believe some stuff.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: All right?
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Your mindset governs your experience of reality.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: That means that what you've come to know and believe, we we tend to think, oh, well, you know, I can I can just take in new information and react differently.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Well, yes, you can, but not, it's not like that simple.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: You have all this autopilot level stuff that says, this is how you act in this kind of a situation.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: When a man looks at you that way, this is how you act acting.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: When a woman acts this way, that's how you when an opportunity of this sort happens, that's how this is how you act.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: And again, please remember it's subrational.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: It's happening fast, and just like in that airplane, that system kicks in, and often you're kind of unaware of it, you're fighting it, but you're you're kind of like clueless as to what's going on there.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: So your mindset or your what you've come to know and believe governs your experience of reality.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Your mind, just like a computer, believes whatever you tell it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Here's the deal once those once those thoughts and beliefs become entrenched in that autopilot arena of your brain, um you you just believe them, and and and quite honestly, you even go on, you go on to kind of um reinforce them by acting in ways that agree with them, which then sort of indirectly reaffirms them in this negative feedback loop.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Once you establish what you believe, your brain makes sure you focus on and experience what you believe.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I believe I did don't deserve to succeed.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Guess what?
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I I can be pretty good at not succeeding.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And thank God I learned some of this stuff and um and have broken out of some of the cycle.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: What you see is what you're looking for.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Once your mind is made up on an issue, you conform your experience of reality to fit your preconceived conclusions.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, my mother was controlling and manipulative of my father somewhat.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Not grossly, but somewhat.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: So guess what?
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: Women, women just want to control you.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Um, and if my wife's listening, you know, I know whatever.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: She knows I'm teasing her.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: She's awesome.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Any of you know that.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: But once your mind's made up, you kind of see that everywhere.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, oh, I see that.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Whatever you focus on, you move toward and get more of.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Whatever you focus on.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Remember that way back when we first started, we talked about the reticular activating system.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Um the bottom line is when you say to yourself, I want XYZ, your uh your brain goes about getting it for you.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: So uh avoiding doesn't work because you attract what you're focused on.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: All right, you're engineered to live by faith.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Uh Hebrews 11, faith is a deeply formed, strongly held set of beliefs about how reality operates.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: You know, God's good, God's not good, he likes people, but not me, whatever.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: You live by faith all the time, even if your beliefs are in other words, you you believe stuff, and whether it's right or wrong, you live by those beliefs.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: So obviously, part of our challenge is the last statement change your mindset, change your beliefs, challenge, and we're gonna talk about three things going forward identify, challenge, and change.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Change your mindset, change your beliefs, change your deep autopilot level thoughts, and you can change your life.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Love you guys.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Enjoying doing this.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Hope you are too.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Please keep sharing it.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Let's let's keep getting the the other people aware of what we're doing.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: And uh, after the first year, we're gonna do some new stuff, some cool stuff, some uh expanded stuff.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Love you.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Have a great week.
