- 0:14Speaker 1: N Home Services dot com, Grete website. To learn more
- 0:18Speaker 1: about the whole team at Larsen Home Services all the
- 0:21Speaker 1: different things that they can do for your home. Experts
- 0:24Speaker 1: from the Attic Up is that is? Is that the
- 0:26Speaker 1: best way?
- 0:26Speaker 2: I know?
- 0:27Speaker 1: I think that's the way you've described it and kind
- 0:28Speaker 1: of focused things Andrew Experts from the Attic Up. It's good, good,
- 0:33Speaker 1: good way to phrase that.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I mean, that's our takeline. Yeah, you know it's pretty subjective. Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 2: I did those two minutes up. Objective, I don't know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: it's yeah, it's from the Attic Up. That's what we do.
- 0:46Speaker 2: We get asked every single day to do siding, to
- 0:50Speaker 2: do windows, to do foundation work, to do basement waterproofing work.
- 0:55Speaker 2: We don't do it and we won't do it. We
- 0:58Speaker 2: stick to what we are experts at and that is
- 1:01Speaker 2: gutter soft of facial roofing and insulation, which insulation is
- 1:06Speaker 2: so vague if you've listened to this show, but that's
- 1:09Speaker 2: what resonates with people. So yes, I yeah, I got sorry.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Having Well, that's it's it's perfectly encapsulates what you guys do.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I just sometimes wish you did some of those other
- 1:20Speaker 1: things Andrew. As a homeowner, I'm like, gosh, I wish
- 1:22Speaker 1: I could call Andrew for windows because the type of
- 1:25Speaker 1: work you guys do. Obviously, we've talked about it on
- 1:28Speaker 1: the show a few times. You guys redid our roof
- 1:31Speaker 1: a few years ago, and to this day, just one
- 1:34Speaker 1: of the greatest decisions we ever made was working with
- 1:36Speaker 1: you guys, and absolutely love what what you guys were
- 1:39Speaker 1: able to do. This week, we're going to talk about
- 1:41Speaker 1: insurance and working with insurance companies and navigating insurance is
- 1:47Speaker 1: a very complicated process. Insurance companies are in business to
- 1:52Speaker 1: do what you might expect to make money, which means
- 1:56Speaker 1: they're not always advocating for you as a homeowner. They're
- 1:59Speaker 1: not always advocating for your house. It's important to have
- 2:02Speaker 1: somebody that can really advocate and help you navigate that system.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Let's talk about insurance and when it comes to when
- 2:09Speaker 1: it comes to your home and roofing and other things.
- 2:14Speaker 1: What are some of those areas that people really need
- 2:16Speaker 1: to be aware of in that.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Well, yeah, yeah, So the biggest thing with insurance right now,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and I've talked about this before, but we keep running
- 2:25Speaker 2: into it again and again, is the landscape in the
- 2:29Speaker 2: home insurance world is changing. You know, I'm not a
- 2:35Speaker 2: I don't get too much like into global warming or
- 2:38Speaker 2: climate change or you know, whatever you want to call it.
- 2:41Speaker 2: But I mean, it was like fifty degrees this weekend. Sure,
- 2:45Speaker 2: call it whatever you want call it. There's no snow
- 2:48Speaker 2: on the ground. It's February. Things are changed, things have changed.
- 2:53Speaker 2: It seems like with weather patterns. Let's just call it
- 2:56Speaker 2: that things have changed with weather patterns, and things have
- 2:59Speaker 2: changed with what we would call norm. I mean, look
- 3:01Speaker 2: what just happened in California. It sounds like that that
- 3:04Speaker 2: was arson set fire, but I mean seventy five eighty
- 3:08Speaker 2: mile an hour wins it seems odd anyway. More and
- 3:12Speaker 2: more natural disasters keep occurring. And I know everybody likes
- 3:16Speaker 2: to say that the insurance companies are the devil. They're evil.
- 3:20Speaker 2: They don't care about us. I get that, but they
- 3:25Speaker 2: do have to make a profit to stay in business.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And you know, they pay very very smart people, people
- 3:31Speaker 2: much smarter than myself. Most of them called actuaries or
- 3:35Speaker 2: statticians to do very complicated math problems to figure out
- 3:39Speaker 2: the statistical probability that something's going to happen somewhere that's
- 3:43Speaker 2: going to cost them money. And different regions change. And
- 3:48Speaker 2: what has happened is that the Midwest has become more
- 3:52Speaker 2: and more prone to hail damage. Wisconsin and Minnesota primarily
- 3:59Speaker 2: is what I'm talking about here. I mean back, you
- 4:02Speaker 2: go back even just ten years ago, and if we
- 4:06Speaker 2: had a hal claim listen, I don't claim to be
- 4:07Speaker 2: a hale expert either that or hail insurance expert. That
- 4:10Speaker 2: is not what I am an expert at. We are
- 4:13Speaker 2: expert at experts at doing great roofs for people that
- 4:17Speaker 2: last a lifetime. But with as many customers as we have,
- 4:22Speaker 2: we do have to deal with insurance companies. So what
- 4:24Speaker 2: we've seen change is this what was typical ten fifteen
- 4:27Speaker 2: years ago. If you had a two hundred thousand dollars
- 4:30Speaker 2: home that which probably was the typical price of a home,
- 4:33Speaker 2: not anymore, but you were going to pay probably twelve
- 4:37Speaker 2: hundred dollars a year, maybe nine hundred dollars a year,
- 4:40Speaker 2: and you might have a five hundred two thousand dollars deductible.
- 4:44Speaker 2: If you got hail, they'd replace it for that deductible.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That is changing because what they're realizing is that that
- 4:51Speaker 2: model is now losing them money. So some companies just
- 4:54Speaker 2: change what they do and how they charge, and other
- 4:57Speaker 2: companies just pull out of the area all to I
- 5:01Speaker 2: can only imagine the mass exodus of insurance companies in
- 5:04Speaker 2: California right now, like that was happening beforehand. Do you
- 5:07Speaker 2: think that's coincidence. Do you think it's coincidence that major
- 5:12Speaker 2: insurance companies started to pull out of that area. No,
- 5:15Speaker 2: because they employ very smart people that go, hey, things
- 5:17Speaker 2: are changing, something's gonna happen. We're gonna lose money here.
- 5:22Speaker 2: So what we're seeing is this customers calling us because
- 5:26Speaker 2: they have to get their roof replaced because their insurance
- 5:30Speaker 2: company said they had to. If you don't get your
- 5:33Speaker 2: roof replaced, we are dropping you. Because they know they
- 5:39Speaker 2: know that the age of the shingle on that home
- 5:42Speaker 2: is going to be much more susceptible to hail and
- 5:45Speaker 2: win damage than a new roof. They keep making the
- 5:48Speaker 2: new shingles better and better and better. More Class four
- 5:51Speaker 2: impact rated shingles keep coming out because again they're understanding
- 5:58Speaker 2: the shingle manufacturers are understanding where the consumer's going to
- 6:03Speaker 2: right now because there's a lot of attention on it.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The insurance companies are bringing the attention to it. So
- 6:07Speaker 2: homeowner's calling and saying, hey, we got to get you
- 6:09Speaker 2: out here, we need an estimate on a roof, got
- 6:11Speaker 2: to get a roof of place, or insurance company is
- 6:13Speaker 2: going to dump us. Not only on top of that,
- 6:15Speaker 2: our thousand dollars deductible that we had is gone, our
- 6:19Speaker 2: new deductibles two percent of our home YadA YadA, YadA YadA.
- 6:23Speaker 2: So I really wanted to talk about this because I've
- 6:26Speaker 2: heard three times in the past week of customers calling
- 6:29Speaker 2: us and saying these same things, open your junk mail. Okay,
- 6:36Speaker 2: all of that rigamarole. I really want to get down
- 6:39Speaker 2: to open your junk mail. I can't tell you how
- 6:41Speaker 2: many letters I get from my insurance company and I
- 6:43Speaker 2: literally rip them in half and I throw them away.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Why because it's junk mail. But it's not. That's the problem.
- 6:50Speaker 2: It's not junk mail. Right now, they are changing policies
- 6:52Speaker 2: because they can, and letters are going out to homeowners,
- 6:56Speaker 2: homeowners are not reading them, and then we saw this
- 6:59Speaker 2: last year when we had some storms. People are getting blindsided.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I mean, we dealt with a bunch of people that
- 7:05Speaker 2: because of the age of their roof, they were sent notifications,
- 7:08Speaker 2: they didn't read them, and honestly, it wouldn't have really
- 7:11Speaker 2: mattered that much anyway, because those letters basically said, hey,
- 7:14Speaker 2: your roof is more than fifteen years old, you need
- 7:16Speaker 2: to replace it. Well, they didn't got hail damage. Now
- 7:20Speaker 2: they found out that on a twenty twenty five thousand
- 7:23Speaker 2: dollars claim they were only going to get a total
- 7:25Speaker 2: of about half oh whereas before they would have if
- 7:29Speaker 2: on twenty five thousand dollars claim, they would have got
- 7:31Speaker 2: twenty four thousand dollars. Now they're getting twelve. So I
- 7:35Speaker 2: just I don't want people to be blindsided. It it's
- 7:39Speaker 2: a really pg sucky conversation. Thank you, It's a really
- 7:46Speaker 2: sucky conversation they have with the whole one and say,
- 7:49Speaker 2: I'm really sorry. There's nothing we can do. Your insurance
- 7:53Speaker 2: company is not going to pay more, and they don't
- 7:56Speaker 2: have to because here's what your policy says. So open
- 8:01Speaker 2: your junk mail, make sure that you're up, you're up
- 8:03Speaker 2: to date on what the standards are and what you're
- 8:06Speaker 2: deductible is, and what they're requiring. You know, my my
- 8:10Speaker 2: father got the same same letter about a year ago,
- 8:13Speaker 2: and his deductible went to one and a half percent
- 8:16Speaker 2: of the value of his home. So we like, we
- 8:18Speaker 2: did some math, yeah, and I told him, I said,
- 8:21Speaker 2: if you get a hail claim, you're gonna get about
- 8:24Speaker 2: seven grand total, and his roof would probably cost about
- 8:29Speaker 2: twenty twenty one thousand dollars unless he replaces his roof
- 8:33Speaker 2: with a newer one, and in that case he is
- 8:37Speaker 2: his deductible would be roughly oh three to four thousand dollars.
- 8:43Speaker 2: And you know, so he would benefit from it. And
- 8:47Speaker 2: you know, my point to him was, let's just get
- 8:49Speaker 2: it replaced and let's put a Class four impact on there,
- 8:52Speaker 2: because I think the point we're getting to is being
- 8:55Speaker 2: proactive on the material that's on your roof, so if
- 8:58Speaker 2: something does happen, we don't even have to worry about
- 9:00Speaker 2: the insurance company. And let's I'm not even mentioning the
- 9:03Speaker 2: F wave shingle because I'm not on here trying to
- 9:05Speaker 2: sell anything. I'm just trying to educate. But our F
- 9:07Speaker 2: wave shingle comes with a hail warranty. If it's damaged
- 9:10Speaker 2: from hale, you don't have to call your insurance company.
- 9:14Speaker 2: F Wave will replace it for free. Wow, which is
- 9:17Speaker 2: a pretty phenomenal. Is it more expensive Heck yeah, it's
- 9:20Speaker 2: more expensive, but it looks better, it's lighter, it's easy
- 9:25Speaker 2: to install, it has it has a fantastic warranty on
- 9:30Speaker 2: top of a hail warranty. So a lot of people
- 9:33Speaker 2: want to go a steal because steel is not gonna
- 9:36Speaker 2: be It'll get dented from hail, but it won't leak
- 9:41Speaker 2: from hail. Our f Wave product won't even dent. You
- 9:44Speaker 2: won't even know if got hit. So there's phenomenal options
- 9:48Speaker 2: out there. I just want people to be educated and
- 9:50Speaker 2: know what the insurance companies are doing, because I think
- 9:53Speaker 2: it's going to be It's been changing, and it's going
- 9:55Speaker 2: to be changing and possibly changing even faster than it
- 9:58Speaker 2: was before, just because of what other shifts and storm shifts,
- 10:02Speaker 2: and so.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I still remember a couple of years ago, the first
- 10:05Speaker 1: time you you mentioned on the program f Wave shang
- 10:08Speaker 1: shingles and I talk about the impact rating. I think
- 10:11Speaker 1: you talked a little bit about the fire rating wind resistant.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I mean, uh, for for your if you're looking for
- 10:16Speaker 1: as we talk about kind of what what the environment
- 10:19Speaker 1: is like these days, it's the it's the right it's
- 10:22Speaker 1: the right piece for the job. Now, as you mentioned
- 10:25Speaker 1: there is there is the conversation about costs. But you
- 10:28Speaker 1: think about having to replace your insurance company saying the
- 10:32Speaker 1: roof you have now needs to be replaced for us
- 10:34Speaker 1: to cover it. You really want to make sure that
- 10:36Speaker 1: you're making the step in the right direction so you
- 10:38Speaker 1: don't have to deal with that type of question or
- 10:40Speaker 1: conversation again in the future. Be like Greg, do like
- 10:43Speaker 1: do you like Andrew's dad did pick up phone? Can
