- 0:00The Damapoda, Chapter one, the twin verses, All that we are is
- 0:08the result of what we have thought. It is founded on our thoughts.
- 0:13It is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with
- 0:18an evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the foot of
- 0:23the ox that draws the carriage. All that we are is the result of
- 0:29what we have thought. It is founded on our thoughts. It is made
- 0:33up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or act with a pure thought,
- 0:39happiness follows him like a shadow that never leaves him. He abused me,
- 0:46He beat me, He defeated me, he robbed me. In those
- 0:52who harbor such thoughts, hatred will never cease. He abused me, he
- 0:59beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me. In those who do
- 1:04not harbor such thoughts, hatred will cease. For hatred does not cease by
- 1:11hatred. At any time, hatred ceases by love. This is an old
- 1:18rule. The world does not know that we must all come to an end
- 1:25here, But those who know it, their quarrels cease at once. He
- 1:32who lives looking for pleasures only his senses uncontrolled, immoderate in his food,
- 1:38idle and weak Marah, the tempter will certainly overthrow him as the wind throws
- 1:47down a weak tree. He who lives without looking for pleasures, his senses
- 1:53well controlled, moderate in his food, faithful, and strong him Mara will
- 2:01certainly not overthrow any more than the wind throws down a rocky mountain. He
- 2:09who wishes to put on the yellow dress without having cleansed himself from sin,
- 2:15who disregards also temperance and truth, is unworthy of the yellow dress. But
- 2:23he who has cleansed himself from sin, is well grounded in all virtues,
- 2:30and regards also temperance and truth, he is indeed worthy of the yellow dress.
- 2:38They who imagine truth in untruth and see untruth in truth, never arrive
- 2:46at truth, but follow vain desires. They who know truth in truth and
- 2:53untruth in untruth, arrive at truth and follow true desire. As rain breaks
- 3:04through an ill thatched house, passion will break through an unreflecting mind. As
- 3:12rain does not break through a well thatched house, passion will not break through
- 3:17a well reflecting mind. The evildoer mourns in this world, and he mourns
- 3:25in the next. He mourns in both. He mourns and suffers when he
- 3:31sees the evil of his own work. The virtuous man delights in this world,
- 3:38and he delights in the next. He delights in both. He delights
- 3:45and rejoices when he sees the purity of his own work. The evil doer
- 3:53suffers in this world, and he suffers in the next. He suffers in
- 3:58both. He suffers when he thinks of the evil he has done. He
- 4:02suffers more when going on the evil path. The virtuous man is happy in
- 4:10this world, and he is happy in the next. He is happy in
- 4:15both. He is happy when he thinks of the good he has done.
- 4:19He is still more happy when going on the good path. The thoughtless man,
- 4:27even if he can recite a large portion of the law, but is
- 4:30not a doer of it, has no share in the priesthood, but is
- 4:35like a cowherd counting the cows of others. The follower of the law,
- 4:44even if he can recite only a small portion of the law, but having
- 4:48forsaken passion and hatred and foolishness, possesses true knowledge and serenity of mind.
- 4:58He, caring for nothing thing in this world or that to come, has
- 5:02indeed a share in the priesthood, end of Chapter one,
