- 0:00Speaker 1: 106.7 Light FM. Good morning.
- 0:02Speaker 2: It is Jack and Nina, Columbus Day. Getting your day started.
- 0:06Speaker 2: If you have to get up and do something.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We did.
- 0:11Speaker 3: What is considered rude these days?
- 0:13Speaker 2: You know, I've been thinking a lot about that because
- 0:16Speaker 2: I seem to think, as you get older, that everyone
- 0:18Speaker 2: is getting ruder.
- 0:20Speaker 3: No one has manners anymore?
- 0:21Speaker 1: I don't think so. Oh, my gosh. You know what?
- 0:24Speaker 1: People are shocked if I hold the door open for them.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Oh.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Men and women. I mean, if I'm there and they're
- 0:29Speaker 1: right behind me, I'll hold the door.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I get so annoyed when people don't hold the door.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Especially if you're going in a store. And someone lets
- 0:36Speaker 3: the door flap right in your face. Goodness gracious. That's rude.
- 0:39Speaker 3: You couldn't have held the door. So according to generational etiquette,
- 0:43Speaker 3: a survey of different generations, Gen X, millennials, boomers, Gen
- 0:47Speaker 3: Z all have different ideas about manners, what offends them.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Gen Z, the ultimate offense is being fake or calling
- 0:57Speaker 3: without texting first.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Is that a thing for your kids?
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:03Speaker 3: For friends that I have in their 30s, I always text.
- 1:05Speaker 1: First before I call them.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I noticed my friends are doing that now.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Are you available?
- 1:09Speaker 3: I do it to some people and some I don't,
- 1:11Speaker 3: but the younger the person, the more I do the
- 1:13Speaker 3: text first.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I don't text my wife first, but that never goes
- 1:17Speaker 2: to that.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Well, it's your wife. Millennials seem to view rudeness as
- 1:21Speaker 3: disrespecting their time and expecting them to answer work messages
- 1:24Speaker 3: after hours.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'm agreeing with all of these so far.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I have adopted a policy. I don't respond to
- 1:31Speaker 3: work emails except for an emergency on Sundays and Saturdays.
- 1:35Speaker 1: That's a good idea. But you're here.
- 1:37Speaker 3: You're at work. But sometimes, you know, just someone will
- 1:41Speaker 3: email you something that's so useless. Why am I?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Oh, no, I don't respond to them.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Do you know what I mean? I am here, but
- 1:47Speaker 3: I don't count that.
- 1:48Speaker 1: That doesn't include our producer, Kristen, though.
- 1:50Speaker 3: No.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Just in case. I know she's listening, so we absolutely
- 1:57Speaker 1: top to bottom.
- 1:57Speaker 3: There's a few people.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I even read your signature every single time you send
- 2:01Speaker 2: us something.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Gen X values efficiency and directness, so Gen X doesn't
- 2:05Speaker 3: like over-explaining. They don't like unnecessary meetings or over-sharing with
- 2:09Speaker 3: emotional stories.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I'm going to wrap all of this up in one
- 2:12Speaker 2: neat package. What I find rude are people more selfish,
- 2:17Speaker 2: self-centered people. All of these things are about thinking of
- 2:21Speaker 2: yourself first.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Sure.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Are they not?
- 2:23Speaker 2: All of them is thinking of you first and not
- 2:26Speaker 2: the other person.
- 2:27Speaker 3: That's just a bad habit in general. Or that's the
- 2:30Speaker 3: way people are though now, right?
- 2:31Speaker 1: But that's sad, isn't it?
- 2:32Speaker 3: Everybody's waiting to talk instead of listening. I find that
- 2:35Speaker 3: to be true. You're telling a story and then they
- 2:37Speaker 3: jump in and then they keep going with their story
- 2:39Speaker 3: and it's like, Can we just finish what we're doing here?
- 2:42Speaker 3: And finally, I just want to get to boomers, by
- 2:44Speaker 3: the way, because my dad falls in this category. Boomers
- 2:46Speaker 3: are most likely to see people as rude if they
- 2:50Speaker 3: don't do handshakes, phone calls, or formal introductions. My dad
- 2:54Speaker 3: has had it with his nieces and nephews who don't
- 2:56Speaker 3: call him on holidays anymore.
- 2:58Speaker 1: They should.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Because he's the top tier of the family now.
- 3:02Speaker 1: He's the guy.
- 3:02Speaker 3: They don't call. He's like, I'm not calling them anymore.
- 3:05Speaker 3: That's my dad. Perfect.
- 3:07Speaker 1: He's right.
