- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreeger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schrager. My name is Peter Schreger.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I host Good Morning Football on NFL Network, and I
- 0:31Speaker 1: am one of the many faces you see on Sundays
- 0:35Speaker 1: on Fox NFL Kickoff over on Fox at eleven am Eastern.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And I bring that show up because I am in
- 0:43Speaker 1: studio on Sundays. But there are NFL games going on
- 0:48Speaker 1: in sixteen different cities, and in many cases there are
- 0:51Speaker 1: NFL games going on on all different coasts, including one
- 0:54Speaker 1: in London this weekend where it's Patriots versus Jaguars, but
- 1:00Speaker 1: in a week that features the Vikings and the Allions,
- 1:03Speaker 1: which I think is an amazing showdown in the end
- 1:06Speaker 1: North the Chiefs and the forty nine Ers, Oh, the
- 1:10Speaker 1: Steelers and the Jets with Devonte Adams now on the field,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and the Buccaneers and the Ravens and what's an awesome
- 1:17Speaker 1: mona night battle. I went back to my notes when
- 1:20Speaker 1: the schedule came out and I circled October twentieth Eagles
- 1:25Speaker 1: at Giants as one of my most anticipated games of
- 1:29Speaker 1: the season. That game doesn't crack my top five this week,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and yet I have to spend a second discussing Saquon's return.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Is this a revenge game? I don't know about that
- 1:45Speaker 1: term being used in this instance. Revenge game. Someone said
- 1:50Speaker 1: earlier this week that the Sean Payton versus the Saints
- 1:52Speaker 1: was a revenge to who Sean Payton retired abruptly and
- 1:58Speaker 1: then took a year on TV and then asked to
- 2:01Speaker 1: be asked out of a contract, and then the Saints
- 2:03Speaker 1: let him go be the coach of the Broncos. Who
- 2:05Speaker 1: is it revenge for? Is it the players? Don't? Is
- 2:08Speaker 1: Marshaun Lattimore circling a picture of Sean Payton and throwing
- 2:11Speaker 1: darts at it? Revenge game has to have a certain context.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Revenge game is when you have such an ugly falling
- 2:19Speaker 1: out with a team and you go back with another
- 2:22Speaker 1: team and you want nothing more than to gut them.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Is Saquon Barkley going back to MetLife a revenge game?
- 2:30Speaker 1: I come out with a resounding no. Come out with
- 2:34Speaker 1: a no, because despite two years of going through negotiations,
- 2:39Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley took more money than he was ever offered
- 2:42Speaker 1: by the Giants to go play for the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Could he have gone to the Houston Texans? I heard
- 2:49Speaker 1: there were talks. Could he have gone to the Chicago Bears.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Sure heard there were talks, but no team was offering
- 2:54Speaker 1: more money than the Crosstown Eagles. So for Saquon, he
- 2:59Speaker 1: takes the business decision move and goes and plays for
- 3:02Speaker 1: another NFL team. It just so happens to be the Giants' rivals.
- 3:06Speaker 1: For the Giants, is it revenge against Saquon because he,
- 3:10Speaker 1: you know, did some unspoken rule that you can never
- 3:15Speaker 1: play for a division rival and that you should take
- 3:17Speaker 1: less money because you were once drafted by a team
- 3:19Speaker 1: and they didn't offer you as big a contract. I
- 3:22Speaker 1: don't see how it's the revenge came from the Giant side.
- 3:24Speaker 1: If anything, the Giants walked away from Saquon, they could
- 3:27Speaker 1: have paid him this money. Instead, they spent it on
- 3:30Speaker 1: offensive line help. They went and they got Brian Burns,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and then they drafted Tyrone Tracy, who, by the way,
- 3:36Speaker 1: looks to be like a pretty good running back, and
- 3:38Speaker 1: the Giants fan seemed to be pretty happy with him.
- 3:41Speaker 1: In Eagles world, I don't even know if this is
- 3:44Speaker 1: even scratching the surface of a storyline. Nick Sirianni shaved
- 3:48Speaker 1: his head last week in the bye week and came
- 3:50Speaker 1: out and started barking again his own fans after a win,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and then went on the press conference, had three kids
- 3:55Speaker 1: on his lap, and started using curse words to defend
- 3:59Speaker 1: his team. That's the storyline in Philly. What happened to
- 4:03Speaker 1: their quarterback Jalen Hurts. That's the storyline in Philly. Meanwhile,
- 4:07Speaker 1: in New York, Daniel Jones can't buy a win in
- 4:09Speaker 1: primetime any single time that the lights come on. Daniel
- 4:12Speaker 1: Jones can't win these games. And oh, by the way,
- 4:14Speaker 1: he's never thrown a touchdown at home in a primetime game.
- 4:19Speaker 1: That's the storyline in New York. And their left tackle
- 4:22Speaker 1: Andrew Thomas, who might be their best player on offense,
- 4:25Speaker 1: suddenly hurt with a list Frank injury. I hate to
- 4:28Speaker 1: take the buzz out of a game, but I was
- 4:30Speaker 1: the first person to circle the Saquon deal and say
- 4:33Speaker 1: that's gonna be a huge story. He was one of
- 4:35Speaker 1: the mooset beloved Giants. But then the season starts and
- 4:38Speaker 1: other storylines occur, and you see something like we saw
- 4:41Speaker 1: on the Hard Knocks where Sequon's essentially like, sure, I
- 4:47Speaker 1: never got offered a contract by the Giants, but then
- 4:49Speaker 1: got more money from the Eagles anyway, and he went there.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Maybe I'm wrong. I've seen Giants fans calling him snake
- 4:55Speaker 1: one because he chose to go to the Eagles. This
- 4:58Speaker 1: isn't like, this isn't kids like. This is business and
- 5:01Speaker 1: a profession. And the Giants did not offer him what
- 5:04Speaker 1: the Eagles offered him, and thirty one other team didn't either,
- 5:08Speaker 1: So to me, I get, it's hard for me to
- 5:11Speaker 1: get worked up. And the last part of it is
- 5:14Speaker 1: like Saquon is like a great dude, a great dude,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and he has said nothing but positive things. We had
- 5:20Speaker 1: him on Good Morning Football and he's like I text
- 5:21Speaker 1: Daniel Jones every week, and after his great performance when
- 5:25Speaker 1: they beat the Browns, I texted him and like you
- 5:27Speaker 1: hear that? And like, how do I hate Taquon? So
- 5:30Speaker 1: will they boo him on Sunday? Maybe? And if Saquon
- 5:34Speaker 1: goes nuts and has two hundred yards and three touchdowns,
- 5:36Speaker 1: does it feel a little better because he did it
- 5:38Speaker 1: against a team that didn't want to pay him. Perhaps,
- 5:41Speaker 1: But I can't get into Saquon Barkley revenge game and
- 5:45Speaker 1: have this great like fire in my belly if I'm
- 5:47Speaker 1: a Giants fan, and I certainly don't care if I'm
- 5:50Speaker 1: an Eagles fan, because there's other things to worry about,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and he's the guy that we brought in. It's not
- 5:55Speaker 1: like we have anything of history of him tearing them
- 5:57Speaker 1: up as a as a Giants player versus the Eagles.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So in a week that has so many other games,
- 6:03Speaker 1: it is amazing to me that this storyline, which is
- 6:06Speaker 1: what I circled in April, it is like one of
- 6:08Speaker 1: the biggest of the season and I can't wait time. Wow,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I get my popcorn ready for that game. It's kind
- 6:13Speaker 1: of a nothing burger, and I'm sorry until the game
- 6:15Speaker 1: actually happens and we see some crazy dramatics before the
- 6:18Speaker 1: game and where Saquan is chewing out Joe Shane or
- 6:21Speaker 1: he's slapping Brian Dable. I can't get worked up on
- 6:24Speaker 1: the Saquon Barkley revenge game narrative. But I can get
- 6:28Speaker 1: worked up and I can get excited for this Minnesota
- 6:32Speaker 1: Detroit battle, and I do so because of the offensive coordinators.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I am so excited these are two of the biggest
- 6:39Speaker 1: dogs in the league. What Ben Johnson did last week
- 6:41Speaker 1: against the Cowboys was not just forty seven points of
- 6:45Speaker 1: offense and here's what we can do. What he did
- 6:48Speaker 1: was embarrass the Cowboys, and he did so in their
- 6:50Speaker 1: building by running multiple trick plays, by having double reverse
- 6:55Speaker 1: passes to Sam Laporta and then a flea flicker to
- 6:58Speaker 1: Penne Sewel, and then a touchdown pass attempt to Taylor Decker,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and then having you know, Big Dan, the big, big
- 7:06Speaker 1: dance skipper out there as an offensive lineman out there
- 7:09Speaker 1: a wide receiver trying to run a route that was
- 7:11Speaker 1: emptying the bag a little bit, but it was also
- 7:13Speaker 1: just a taste of what he's got in store. I
- 7:16Speaker 1: think it's pretty cool that Ben Johnson has this playbook
- 7:19Speaker 1: and he's just giving us a sampling. First three weeks
- 7:22Speaker 1: of the season, Lions offense was pedestrian. The last two
- 7:24Speaker 1: weeks there's been no better unit in football. David Montgomery
- 7:28Speaker 1: kicks you in the mouth of the run game, and
- 7:30Speaker 1: then Ben Johnson puts golf in these situations where you
- 7:32Speaker 1: can go eighteen for eighteen on a Monday night game
- 7:34Speaker 1: and the following week helping an offense score forty seven points.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I would say this is a celebration of Ben Johnson,
- 7:42Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator, if it wasn't Brian Flores lining up
- 7:45Speaker 1: against him. Flora is as cool as it gets. Black
- 7:49Speaker 1: flat brimmed hat. This week, black puffer, Jess Puffer, Puffer
- 7:54Speaker 1: vest comes in on the press conference. Now, I like
- 7:57Speaker 1: fighting fire with fire. I don't know about everyone, but
- 7:59Speaker 1: I do so like he's bringing it. He's bringing it.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He knows that there's a lot of hype on the
- 8:04Speaker 1: other guy. This is a chess match of the greatest
- 8:07Speaker 1: measure and I cannot wait in the first matchup between
- 8:10Speaker 1: these two great divisional opponents to see who gets the
- 8:14Speaker 1: better of who Flores is gonna bring his guys. They
- 8:17Speaker 1: have been one of the best defens in the league
- 8:18Speaker 1: and Johnson is going to empty the bag. The game
- 8:20Speaker 1: is in Minnesota. Vikings Lions is cool, but Ben Johnson
- 8:26Speaker 1: versus Brian Flores is even cooler. And here's a little
- 8:29Speaker 1: part that I love. Jared Goff's worst day as a professional,
- 8:32Speaker 1: probably the one that he lays a wake at night
- 8:35Speaker 1: and still thinks about, was the Super Bowl against the
- 8:37Speaker 1: Patriots and Sean McVay still talks about that game, how
- 8:40Speaker 1: Belichick and him had this battle and Belichick got the
- 8:42Speaker 1: best of them, and that was one that got away.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Do you know who the defensive coordinator, the defensive coach
- 8:48Speaker 1: who gave Jared Goff those fits that day was? It
- 8:51Speaker 1: was Brian Flores. Brian Flores has Jared Goff's number, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: I know the last year the Lions put up a
- 8:56Speaker 1: lot of yards on the Vikings. I get that, but
- 8:59Speaker 1: on the biggest of stages and the biggest game of
- 9:00Speaker 1: his life, Jared Goff did not perform against Brian Flores's defense.
- 9:04Speaker 1: They're going after it again this week and I can't wait.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm bringing on my podcast producer Slash Pal, an NFL
- 9:14Speaker 1: fan Aaron wan Kaufman, because we were both in the
- 9:18Speaker 1: building for Jets versus Bills. I got there pretty early
- 9:25Speaker 1: with a credential. I was able to walk on the
- 9:27Speaker 1: field talk to some folks. I'm not sure this is
- 9:31Speaker 1: Newsworthy or not. Drew Rosenhaus, the agent who recently picked
- 9:35Speaker 1: up Hassan Reddick as a client, sees me in the
- 9:38Speaker 1: lower bowels and we start talking and we walk on
- 9:41Speaker 1: the field together, and then Drew immediately finds Woody Johnson,
- 9:44Speaker 1: the owner of the Jets, and it looks like they
- 9:45Speaker 1: had a twenty minute chat, and I would assume it
- 9:48Speaker 1: was the first time they've spoken about the Hassan Reddick
- 9:51Speaker 1: thing in person. And I'm like, all right, this is
- 9:54Speaker 1: where the action is, this is where things get done.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Little did I know that somewhere in New Jersey DeVante
- 10:01Speaker 1: Adams was already in town watching the game and would
- 10:05Speaker 1: be in the facility by Tuesday morning, signed, sealed, delivered
- 10:10Speaker 1: as a New York Jets wide receiver. And here's where
- 10:15Speaker 1: I come out on the whole thing. Fool me once,
- 10:18Speaker 1: shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. What
- 10:21Speaker 1: if you're fooled fifteen times in the first six weeks
- 10:25Speaker 1: of this season. That's how I feel here as I
- 10:27Speaker 1: double down, triple down, and quadrupled down on my preseason
- 10:31Speaker 1: prediction of the Jets being the AFC East winners and
- 10:35Speaker 1: the number one seed in the AFC, I kinda am
- 10:39Speaker 1: being maybe naive here. I think it matters. I think
- 10:44Speaker 1: DeVante Adams helps, and I think he might be the
- 10:46Speaker 1: missing piece. I know it's very very easy to look
- 10:50Speaker 1: at this and say, same old Jets, This isn't fantasy football,
- 10:53Speaker 1: This isn't Dream Team twenty eleven Eagles. Like it doesn't work,
- 10:57Speaker 1: He'll just add all these pieces and just play Kate
- 10:59Speaker 1: Rodgers and think it's gonna work by putting a thirty
- 11:01Speaker 1: two year old wide receiver on the field and assume
- 11:03Speaker 1: he's gonna magically make things better. But I look at
- 11:06Speaker 1: the Jets season, and I know it's hard in a vacuum,
- 11:09Speaker 1: But I look at the Jets season. I say they lost
- 11:11Speaker 1: ten to nine in the rain to Denver, where Greg
- 11:14Speaker 1: Zerline could make a field goal at the end and
- 11:16Speaker 1: put the game away, where Bryce Hall was handed the
- 11:19Speaker 1: ball on the one yard line and couldn't get it in.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I look at that game as a game that slipped
- 11:23Speaker 1: out of their hands. I look at the game in
- 11:25Speaker 1: London where they come all the way back and Aaron
- 11:27Speaker 1: Rodgers throws a terrible pass to Mike Williams and it's intercepting.
- 11:31Speaker 1: That's how the game ends. That could have been a win,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and then Aaron I was there on Monday night. Neither
- 11:35Speaker 1: team played outstanding in this game, and there were lots
- 11:38Speaker 1: of errors. There were twenty penalties called by the way,
- 11:40Speaker 1: I think the rest just threw another flag. Really fun
- 11:42Speaker 1: to go to an NFL game and just do flags
- 11:44Speaker 1: after every single play, then a conference and then decided
- 11:47Speaker 1: to pick up the flag. But then wait, there's another penalty,
- 11:49Speaker 1: so they offset. Anyway, That's a whole other conversation. Greg
- 11:53Speaker 1: Zerline missing those two field goals cost the Jets that game.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers Aron passed to Mike Williams cost the Jets
- 12:02Speaker 1: that game, not taking anything away from the Bills because
- 12:05Speaker 1: I'm third and five, Josh Allen needed to run for
- 12:08Speaker 1: a first down and everyone in the building knew it
- 12:09Speaker 1: was a running play, and he still was able to
- 12:11Speaker 1: run for a first down to put the game away.
- 12:14Speaker 1: But if Zerline makes the kick in Denver, if Zerline
- 12:17Speaker 1: makes one of those kicks against the Bills, you're looking
- 12:21Speaker 1: at a Jets team that is four and two and
- 12:23Speaker 1: sitting pretty right now. They're two and four. They're going
- 12:26Speaker 1: into Pittsburgh, and I don't spite them for firing the coach,
- 12:31Speaker 1: for changing the play caller and now adding a wide
- 12:34Speaker 1: receiver to try to salvage this season, because if it
- 12:37Speaker 1: wasn't clear already, the New York Jets are all in.
- 12:40Speaker 1: On twenty twenty four, Now you were in the building
- 12:42Speaker 1: as a Bills fan, I am sure you saw some
- 12:45Speaker 1: of the frustration from the Jets fans that were surrounding.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I guess I'm excited that DeVante Adams
- 12:53Speaker 2: can come in and replace their line and kick these
- 12:55Speaker 2: field goals.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Oh wait, no, no, no, no, Adams is not the kicker.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Okay, but Adams is going to be on the offensive
- 13:00Speaker 2: line to protect Rogers blind No, no, no, he's not right.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Adams is. He's one of the best wide receivers, even
- 13:09Speaker 2: if he's not like at his peak, he is going
- 13:11Speaker 2: to be great. And Rogers and him obviously have Like
- 13:14Speaker 2: I mean, Rogers came out was like, DeVante Adams is
- 13:16Speaker 2: like my family likes he's my guy. This will be amazing.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Garrett Wilson as like the number two option is is
- 13:24Speaker 2: an embarrassment of riches.
- 13:26Speaker 1: They're two and four? Does this change them? I you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: because I'm in I'm like, cause you're saying, here they go.
- 13:32Speaker 1: They add one of the best wide receivers in football,
- 13:35Speaker 1: and now Rodgers is happy and comfortable and he's not
- 13:37Speaker 1: throwing at Mike Williams in big spots. He's throwing at
- 13:38Speaker 1: Devanta Adams, who he knows will be exactly there. And
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'll tell you I spoke with sources in New York,
- 13:43Speaker 1: like we're recording this on a Wednesday, Like he's knee
- 13:46Speaker 1: deep in the like he's gonna be a very big
- 13:47Speaker 1: part of the game plan on Sunday night, like he
- 13:49Speaker 1: is going to It's not he needs three weeks to acclimate,
- 13:52Speaker 1: Like he knows this offense inside and out, and Rodgers
- 13:55Speaker 1: will probably throw to him fifteen times on Sunday.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know, maybe this is biased as a
- 14:00Speaker 2: Bills fan, but sure if Zerlin had made those kicks,
- 14:03Speaker 2: they could have won that game. Well, if Tyler Bass
- 14:05Speaker 2: had kicks, it wouldn't have even been cled. Yeah, Like
- 14:09Speaker 2: I was sitting right there. I watched the Hail Mary,
- 14:12Speaker 2: and I was like, oh god, this is like my
- 14:14Speaker 2: heart sunk because like, of course Rogers is going to
- 14:17Speaker 2: hit this pass, but he's already had some magic happen,
- 14:22Speaker 2: Like Garrett Wilson's been playing really well the last two games,
- 14:25Speaker 2: even if he's you know, getting twenty targets for one
- 14:27Speaker 2: hundred yards or whatever. But like the Jets fans that
- 14:30Speaker 2: were around me were energetic to start the game and
- 14:38Speaker 2: it deflated over the course of the I mean, this
- 14:41Speaker 2: happens with every fan base. You know, you start the drive,
- 14:44Speaker 2: you're standing up for your defense. And then my wife
- 14:47Speaker 2: came with me, and she has never been to an
- 14:48Speaker 2: NFL game, so I was explaining things to her, and
- 14:51Speaker 2: I was like, the sign comes up and it's like,
- 14:53Speaker 2: Jets fans, you are required to stand up, make some noise,
- 14:57Speaker 2: and then solely people start sitting down. She's like, why
- 14:59Speaker 2: is this happening. I was like, because they're losing.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Enthusiasm, They're they're getting deep and yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 2: So I'm not entire really sure how I feel if this,
- 15:09Speaker 2: because I mean, look, the Jets just got Demonte Adams again.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Not to be biased as a Bills fan, the Bills
- 15:14Speaker 2: just made a trade for a receiver which could clean
- 15:17Speaker 2: up some of our needs to I don't know if
- 15:18Speaker 2: this trade puts the Jets into the clear number one position,
- 15:23Speaker 2: because I think the line is a bigger issue than
- 15:28Speaker 2: the lack of a web receiver.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Overwhelm all right, fair and Devant Adams is gonna tackle
- 15:37Speaker 1: Josh Allen. The thirty five, Michael Clemens and Deon Dawkins
- 15:48Speaker 1: were going after it all game. It was pretty cool
- 15:49Speaker 1: to watch from the stands, and then to see Dawkins
- 15:53Speaker 1: peacock a bit after the game was pretty neat. In fact,
- 15:57Speaker 1: let's run the clip of Dion Dawkins after the game. Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I try to keep it conclude and collect all week,
- 16:04Speaker 4: but you know, like yes, in the situation for this
- 16:08Speaker 4: and Selvie, you know, all hell breaks loose. So that's
- 16:11Speaker 4: kind of what happened today. And I love it, I
- 16:14Speaker 4: really do. I love the intensity, I love the smack talking,
- 16:18Speaker 4: I love it all. But football is football. That's what
- 16:21Speaker 4: we're here for. We're gladiators, you know. Like I said,
- 16:24Speaker 4: you know, I wore green so stun on them, kept
- 16:28Speaker 4: my shirt off to stun on them. I did exactly
- 16:31Speaker 4: what I said that I was going to do. And
- 16:32Speaker 4: the truth always possessed itself, you know, I said that
- 16:35Speaker 4: they a bunch of doudos, right, So hey, it's shown,
- 16:38Speaker 4: so hey it is and what it is.
- 16:40Speaker 1: So that is your football analysis of it. Then I
- 16:42Speaker 1: like to always give you a little behind the scenes.
- 16:45Speaker 1: So I've got the credits, I got the whole thing.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And then I'm tapped on the shoulder and I'm introduced
- 16:51Speaker 1: by one of the Jets employees and say, you know,
- 16:55Speaker 1: have you met fifty cent before? No, I haven't met
- 16:59Speaker 1: fifty cent before. Would you like to meet fifty cent? Sure?
- 17:04Speaker 1: Like to meet fifty cent. Some backstory. I was in
- 17:08Speaker 1: college when Into Club came out. I would feel like
- 17:11Speaker 1: I have got many memories of that song being the
- 17:13Speaker 1: soundtrack of many of my favorite moments in my life,
- 17:16Speaker 1: both as a as a college student and a single man.
- 17:20Speaker 1: All Right, to see Curtis Jackson in person was cool enough.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And then for him to have this huge smile and
- 17:30Speaker 1: then embrace me, hug me and says fan of your work,
- 17:35Speaker 1: love the show. I'm like about to fall out. So
- 17:37Speaker 1: then I'm like, all right, that's cool, fifty And then
- 17:41Speaker 1: he's looking to like engage. I'm like, okay, this isn't
- 17:43Speaker 1: just a typical spot. We start talking and I'm like,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I have to tell you, I think it's really cool
- 17:49Speaker 1: what you do in Shreveport, Louisiana. He's like, okay, his
- 17:54Speaker 1: eyes light up. We go into a fifteen minute conversation
- 17:57Speaker 1: about how fifty cent, which I've read an article about this,
- 18:00Speaker 1: has set up a production company and a production house
- 18:04Speaker 1: and an edit house and a post edit. It in Shreveport,
- 18:08Speaker 1: which A has tax credit situation that's helpful, and B
- 18:12Speaker 1: has helped employ and rebuild the city of Shreveport, Louisiana
- 18:17Speaker 1: in a way that he is like one of the
- 18:19Speaker 1: leading a real estate guys because he owns all this
- 18:23Speaker 1: space there and then B like providers for a local economy.
- 18:27Speaker 1: And for me to mention that that's me because I
- 18:29Speaker 1: read everything and I saw an article on that he's
- 18:32Speaker 1: immediately going into tax credits and how he's got ten
- 18:37Speaker 1: different shows in production all based out of Shreveport, Louisiana,
- 18:41Speaker 1: and how Power and Ghosts and that whole entire universe
- 18:45Speaker 1: like they've got roots there. And then he's talking about
- 18:47Speaker 1: how he brought in Andrew Schultz, and he brought in
- 18:50Speaker 1: Dave Chappelle and he brought in a couple other comedians
- 18:54Speaker 1: to perform in Shreveport and what that does for the
- 18:56Speaker 1: local economy. And I'm like, Okay, here, I am dummy
- 19:01Speaker 1: thinking about in the club and thinking about him at
- 19:03Speaker 1: halftime at the Super Bowl and how cool he was. Meanwhile,
- 19:06Speaker 1: I'm like, it's also one of the greatest businessmen of
- 19:08Speaker 1: all If you know the story about vitamin water instead
- 19:11Speaker 1: of taking a big salary. Early on in the vitamin
- 19:14Speaker 1: water craze, he took ownership of the company. It sells
- 19:17Speaker 1: for about a billion dollars, and fifty cent never asked
- 19:19Speaker 1: to work again, and instead he not only gets back
- 19:21Speaker 1: in the studio, he then starts producing these shows and
- 19:25Speaker 1: is a lead actor in some of the biggest shows
- 19:28Speaker 1: that has come out on Stars in the last twenty years.
- 19:30Speaker 1: So we end the conversation and I'm like, all right,
- 19:33Speaker 1: do I do that awkward thing? Do I? Of course
- 19:37Speaker 1: I do. I go in for the for the hey,
- 19:38Speaker 1: do you mind taking a photo? We get a great
- 19:40Speaker 1: photo and I put it on Instagram and everyone's loving it,
- 19:43Speaker 1: and I'm like, fifty cent, great interaction. Loved my time
- 19:46Speaker 1: with fifty cent, And I say thank you for everyone whatever, goodbye,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and he's like, he's sticking around for the game. I
- 19:51Speaker 1: was like, and then we actually watched the game together.
- 19:52Speaker 1: It was really cool because he was like, come up
- 19:54Speaker 1: to the box. So I came up to the box
- 19:55Speaker 1: and we were hanging. So fifty uh, You've always had
- 19:59Speaker 1: a fan in me and very rare. Do you meet
- 20:01Speaker 1: these guys and come away being like, yeah, he was
- 20:03Speaker 1: cooler then I thought you would. Be fifty cent was
- 20:05Speaker 1: cooler than I thought he would be. I also had
- 20:07Speaker 1: another interaction, and this one has already spilled into the
- 20:10Speaker 1: New York Post. No, I'm not in page six, don't worry.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I'm standing there and I hear sger Schrager, Schrager, and
- 20:20Speaker 1: I look around and I see Fireman Ed. Hey, Pete,
- 20:29Speaker 1: big fan, like a big fan of you. I've been
- 20:32Speaker 1: watching you for many years. I have gotten on my
- 20:35Speaker 1: feet and made some noise based on your Jets. Chant says,
- 20:40Speaker 1: they haven't been showing me on the big screen as
- 20:43Speaker 1: often as they used to. If you know anything about it,
- 20:48Speaker 1: let me know. I'm not one to mock Fireman at
- 20:51Speaker 1: I'm not mocking him at all on this. I honestly
- 20:54Speaker 1: have nothing to do with the Jets in house production.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I have nothing, not even a contact who I would
- 21:01Speaker 1: even even know to locate. So who pulls the lever
- 21:04Speaker 1: on the Fireman ed Chant or not? But apparently in
- 21:08Speaker 1: the last few weeks the Jets in house production team
- 21:12Speaker 1: has been leaning more towards a non ed focus than
- 21:16Speaker 1: an ED focus. So now I'm like somehow involved in this,
- 21:20Speaker 1: and I know people in their their pr staff, and
- 21:23Speaker 1: I know some folks in the front office. I'm like,
- 21:26Speaker 1: do I make a thing of this or not? Do
- 21:29Speaker 1: I inquire because I'm so like here for that kind
- 21:31Speaker 1: of stuff, Like do I go out and try to
- 21:34Speaker 1: find the answer before I could even text anyone or
- 21:38Speaker 1: see if it's a story or not. I see Firemanet
- 21:41Speaker 1: has posted an Instagram reel detailing how he's not sure
- 21:45Speaker 1: what's going on, but they're not using. All he wants
- 21:48Speaker 1: to do is help. He just wants to help, and
- 21:50Speaker 1: he knows when he's on that screen it helps. And
- 21:52Speaker 1: then I see in the New York Post there's a
- 21:54Speaker 1: big article about Fireman ed Anzeloni and his claim that
- 21:59Speaker 1: the Jets in house production staff has iced him out
- 22:02Speaker 1: or removed him. So now I'm like, all right, I'm
- 22:06Speaker 1: gonna do at a solid I'm going to maybe inquire.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Before I could even inquire on that, my guy, licensed
- 22:15Speaker 1: plate Guy, who is the Giants in house like resident
- 22:21Speaker 1: fan reposts Ed's tweet and says, Oh, if you want
- 22:26Speaker 1: to talk about icing out, we can have a conversation.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Apparently the Giants have been distancing themselves from their longtime fan,
- 22:34Speaker 1: the long blondhaired guy license plate Guy. Where's all the
- 22:37Speaker 1: license plates. I haven't noticed it, but apparently license plate
- 22:40Speaker 1: Guy is not being used on the in house screens.
- 22:44Speaker 1: So as we record this right now, I have no answers.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I feel like I'm Mike Wallace going into the dark
- 22:51Speaker 1: side here. I feel like I want answers. I would
- 22:55Speaker 1: think this is coincidence and that the Jets are not
- 22:59Speaker 1: icing out Fireman Ed. I don't think he said anything
- 23:01Speaker 1: that was worthy of being, you know, taking off the screens.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I also don't think the offense has done much and
- 23:07Speaker 1: the defense has been giving up a lot of yards
- 23:09Speaker 1: in these big possessions where it doesn't even get the
- 23:12Speaker 1: third down. So I'm going to go out on the
- 23:15Speaker 1: limb here. I'm gonna make my promise to Fireman Ed
- 23:18Speaker 1: that I will at least inquire about this and I
- 23:20Speaker 1: will see. And as the Jets go on the road,
- 23:23Speaker 1: they play Pittsburgh, they eventually will be home, and I
- 23:26Speaker 1: think on Halloween night they play the Houston Texans and
- 23:29Speaker 1: it's on Amazon. I am gonna do all that I
- 23:33Speaker 1: can to make sure that the next time they play.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I believe they play the Patriots in New England and
- 23:40Speaker 1: then they come up Aaron, do you have the Jets
- 23:42Speaker 1: schedule up here. I know there's a lengthy monologue here,
- 23:44Speaker 1: but let's get the Jets schedule up.
- 23:47Speaker 2: So Steelers is this Sunday in Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh and
- 23:50Speaker 2: then in Foxboro.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And then it's home against the Texans Texas on Halloween.
- 23:55Speaker 1: All right, Ed, if you're listening Fireman Ed, I'm gonna
- 23:59Speaker 1: do all I can. I'm gonna talk to the Jets
- 24:01Speaker 1: PR guys. I'm gonna try at least get an answer for you.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But I will also say this, I am confident that
- 24:06Speaker 1: you will be back on those screens, and if you're not,
- 24:08Speaker 1: it's probably becausing the time between today and then, you
- 24:11Speaker 1: might have gone over your skis with this stuff. Just late,
- 24:13Speaker 1: lay low man, We're gonna make it happen. Jets fans
- 24:16Speaker 1: love Fireman Ed, they love that chant. I'm gonna do
- 24:18Speaker 1: all I can to get some answers here. Fifty cent
- 24:22Speaker 1: Fireman Ed, Saquon Barkley, and I want to talk Tampa
- 24:25Speaker 1: Bay Buccaneers. They had an awesome offensive outpouring. Our guest
- 24:29Speaker 1: today is their offensive coordinator Liam Cohen. He comes on
- 24:32Speaker 1: after this so excited to have one of the hottest
- 24:45Speaker 1: offenses and the mastermind behind it on the podcast today
- 24:50Speaker 1: in season, a few days after the greatest offensive day
- 24:54Speaker 1: his franchise has ever had. With no further ado, the
- 24:57Speaker 1: offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, mister Liam Cohen,
- 25:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the season with Peter Schrager.
- 25:02Speaker 5: Ye, thank you, Peter, appreciate you having me on, and
- 25:05Speaker 5: this is awesome.
- 25:06Speaker 1: We have known each other for many years. I've charted
- 25:08Speaker 1: your career from the college days to the Rams, to
- 25:14Speaker 1: Kentucky and then now back to the Buccaneers. And yet,
- 25:18Speaker 1: for all of the history that you've had running offenses
- 25:22Speaker 1: and being a part of offenses, have you ever had
- 25:24Speaker 1: a day where your team has put up the amount
- 25:26Speaker 1: of yards five hundred and ninety four like the Buccaneers
- 25:29Speaker 1: did in New Orleans on Sunday.
- 25:31Speaker 6: No, I've really never been a part of a game
- 25:32Speaker 6: like that. I mean, it was just credit to our players,
- 25:36Speaker 6: our staff. I mean, these guys, so many of the
- 25:39Speaker 6: things that happened on Sunday were a credit to their preparation,
- 25:45Speaker 6: the week that we had getting out there and practicing
- 25:48Speaker 6: at Tulane, and injuries and guys stepping up and making plays.
- 25:53Speaker 6: I mean so often on Sunday, you saw guys just
- 25:56Speaker 6: catching a checkdown and making a play, or breaking tackles
- 26:00Speaker 6: and making plays.
- 26:01Speaker 5: So as much as yes, it's great for us.
- 26:05Speaker 6: From an offensive standpoint, and I'm proud to be a
- 26:08Speaker 6: part of it, I can't take much credit for it
- 26:11Speaker 6: because those guys were the ones doing it on Sunday.
- 26:14Speaker 1: All right, Take me through the week, because on Tuesday
- 26:16Speaker 1: we're all watching Weather Channel and I'm up in New
- 26:19Speaker 1: York and you're seeing Hurricane Milton come in right at
- 26:21Speaker 1: Tampa and you guys fly out seven hundred miles get
- 26:25Speaker 1: to New Orleans. A lot of people bring their families
- 26:28Speaker 1: to New Orleans. Other people's families are going to Orlando
- 26:31Speaker 1: or Gainesville. Take us through the Cohen family. I know
- 26:34Speaker 1: you got young kids and a beautiful wife. Take us
- 26:36Speaker 1: through the actual week on Tuesday and where your folks were,
- 26:40Speaker 1: and how it all worked out for you to actually
- 26:42Speaker 1: settle in and pretend to think about football for a
- 26:44Speaker 1: couple of days.
- 26:45Speaker 6: Crazy weekend. Really, it started like Sunday morning. We got
- 26:49Speaker 6: some information from the organization that said, hey, look we
- 26:53Speaker 6: might have to evacuate and we're looking at what those
- 26:57Speaker 6: options are. It was potentially go to Texas, it was
- 27:02Speaker 6: go to Orlando, it was go to obviously New Orleans,
- 27:05Speaker 6: and so started to look at some of those preparations.
- 27:08Speaker 6: On Sunday, my wife and I actually it was her
- 27:12Speaker 6: birthday on Tuesday last week, and we're trying to we're
- 27:16Speaker 6: going out and go shopping for her birthday present on Sunday,
- 27:20Speaker 6: and we're trying to make some accommodations.
- 27:23Speaker 5: We're looking at flights. We see that there's a bunch
- 27:26Speaker 5: of flights available.
- 27:27Speaker 6: And then her dad actually flew down from Cincinnati to
- 27:31Speaker 6: Florida to come help her and the two kids go
- 27:35Speaker 6: to Cincinnati. So they didn't make the trip to New Orleans.
- 27:39Speaker 6: They were able to get out of Tampa Tuesday morning
- 27:44Speaker 6: where they were or Monday, Monday evening, excuse me, they
- 27:47Speaker 6: went out to Cincinnati. We had Noah's Ark on Tuesday
- 27:51Speaker 6: when we floor Monday when we flew out of Tampa, dogs, cats, families,
- 27:56Speaker 6: everybody credit the Glazer family for doing that.
- 28:00Speaker 5: I mean, what an unbelievable joy.
- 28:02Speaker 1: So you guys get on a team plane or is
- 28:04Speaker 1: it like and then also, hey, if you've got three
- 28:07Speaker 1: kids and a dog, you're welcome to come to That's
- 28:09Speaker 1: what the Glazer said.
- 28:10Speaker 6: Yeah, they said all of your immediate family, pets, whomever,
- 28:16Speaker 6: you need to essentially get out of Tampa and wasn't
- 28:19Speaker 6: able to do so on their own. So we had
- 28:21Speaker 6: two planes, got those things going. We flew out, and man,
- 28:26Speaker 6: as crazy as it was, you know, our our op
- 28:30Speaker 6: staff and facilities, they did an unbelievable job of making
- 28:34Speaker 6: it pretty seamless, and it was kind of a blur.
- 28:38Speaker 6: And then I ended up missing my wife's birthday on Tuesday.
- 28:42Speaker 6: It was in the doghouse for a day or two,
- 28:44Speaker 6: but you know, it was one of those weeks, man.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And then at some point you put together an offensive
- 28:51Speaker 1: game plan and we've you know, overshot White goes down
- 28:54Speaker 1: and now it's all right, Sean Tucker and Bucky Irving
- 28:59Speaker 1: and these guys combined for two hundred plus yards and
- 29:01Speaker 1: you guys put up five hundred ninety four yards to offense,
- 29:04Speaker 1: like in the grand scheme of it at oh, when
- 29:05Speaker 1: you think about missing your wife's birthday and Noah's Ark
- 29:09Speaker 1: and a hurricane coming to then Sunday having the greatest
- 29:12Speaker 1: offensive day the franchise ever had, take me through the
- 29:16Speaker 1: actual game itself.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Yeah, you can't write it much better, I guess, except
- 29:20Speaker 6: for the fact that you know, we came out, started fast.
- 29:24Speaker 6: We go down on the first drive of the game,
- 29:26Speaker 6: go score a touchdown on a really efficient drive. The
- 29:29Speaker 6: guys were physical, we were completing passes, you know, really efficient.
- 29:35Speaker 5: And then you know, we go down another drive, end
- 29:38Speaker 5: up having to kick a field goal, the defense gets
- 29:41Speaker 5: a stop, gets a turnover for a touchdown, seventeen to nothing.
- 29:46Speaker 5: Things are really moving in the right direction.
- 29:48Speaker 6: And then these second quarter hits and we went three interceptions,
- 29:54Speaker 6: multiple penalties, We went on a drive that didn't go
- 29:58Speaker 6: forward for a single yard.
- 30:00Speaker 5: So we've played, you know, we've still we've talked about
- 30:04Speaker 5: this a number of times.
- 30:05Speaker 6: We have yet to play for quarters of good football
- 30:08Speaker 6: or four quarters of our best football. And so you
- 30:11Speaker 6: come out of the second quarter, they take the lead.
- 30:13Speaker 6: We go in the halftime and there was really no flinch,
- 30:16Speaker 6: no blink those guys, the leaders, coach bowles, it was
- 30:20Speaker 6: all like this, and the guys just really needed to recuperate,
- 30:24Speaker 6: regain our focus, calm down. Came out in the second half,
- 30:28Speaker 6: the defense plays unbelievable. They hold them to zero points
- 30:32Speaker 6: in the second half, and we were able to get
- 30:34Speaker 6: things going again and get.
- 30:35Speaker 5: The run game back on track. And credit to the
- 30:39Speaker 5: guys up front.
- 30:39Speaker 6: They played, They played their tails off, and those backs
- 30:42Speaker 6: made a lot of people miss.
- 30:44Speaker 1: So when you were interviewing for the job, one of
- 30:45Speaker 1: the things that everyone in the media, myself including were saying, well,
- 30:48Speaker 1: he's got history with Baker Mayfield, but that history was
- 30:50Speaker 1: so brief. Baker got to the Rams when you were
- 30:53Speaker 1: on the offensive staff and basically played for a few weeks,
- 30:56Speaker 1: came in, saved the day on a Thursday night game
- 30:59Speaker 1: on about one day's notice. And then you get reunited
- 31:03Speaker 1: in Tampa. Take us through your relationship with Bakers then
- 31:05Speaker 1: in LA and then now that you're together and this
- 31:08Speaker 1: is the quarterback who's really at the switch for your offense.
- 31:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 6: I mean when I got to know him early on
- 31:13Speaker 6: in those weeks in LA, you felt you just felt
- 31:17Speaker 6: his confidence, even at a time where he was, you know,
- 31:22Speaker 6: being moved around. He was being traded around, and you
- 31:26Speaker 6: felt confidence though. He came out to practice, He practiced hard,
- 31:29Speaker 6: he practiced well. He brought juice, he brought energy, He
- 31:35Speaker 6: was fun to be around during during the week.
- 31:37Speaker 5: He was he kept it light but serious.
- 31:39Speaker 6: Enough to know that obviously this is a job and
- 31:43Speaker 6: this is our this is our livelihood.
- 31:45Speaker 5: So he was really fun to be around. He's an igniter.
- 31:47Speaker 5: He's an igniter.
- 31:48Speaker 6: He's the type of person that you really just want
- 31:51Speaker 6: to gravitate towards. And he's really alignment at heart, Like
- 31:55Speaker 6: that's his personality.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I love this. What does that mean?
- 31:58Speaker 6: That's Those are his best friends, those are his guys.
- 32:00Speaker 6: He's just one of the guys. He's not he's our
- 32:02Speaker 6: franchise quarterback. He's obviously having a ton of success right now,
- 32:06Speaker 6: but he is truly one of them. Those are the
- 32:09Speaker 6: guys he takes out to dinner every week, those are
- 32:11Speaker 6: the guys he vacations with in the offseason.
- 32:15Speaker 5: So he is truly one of them.
- 32:17Speaker 6: Where it's not just like, Okay, it's Baker and then
- 32:20Speaker 6: the rest of the guys. He's an extension of us
- 32:23Speaker 6: on the field in terms of his knowledge, his preparation,
- 32:26Speaker 6: the way that he's doing things. I think for Baker
- 32:29Speaker 6: becoming a father and you know, just the maturation process
- 32:33Speaker 6: that goes into you know, fatherhood and being a parent
- 32:37Speaker 6: and obviously getting a new deal and being a franchise
- 32:41Speaker 6: quarter where there's a lot of responsibility that comes with that.
- 32:43Speaker 6: I think it's really helped him in his maduration process
- 32:47Speaker 6: of being a franchise quarterback.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Give me a funny Baker story, because I think he's
- 32:52Speaker 1: actually got the best personality of any of these quarterbacks.
- 32:54Speaker 1: And they're all doing commercials and Baker used to do
- 32:56Speaker 1: a ton of commercials and he's actually a great actor
- 32:58Speaker 1: on them. But like you said, levity, he brings levity.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I think this guy, we talk with him like, I
- 33:04Speaker 1: think he's hilarious.
- 33:05Speaker 5: I mean, have you seen have you not seen the
- 33:08Speaker 5: deal where he was one of our fans?
- 33:10Speaker 1: Yes, Dre talk about it.
- 33:14Speaker 6: I was part of I was actually a part of that,
- 33:16Speaker 6: but I didn't know. So I'm in the weight room
- 33:17Speaker 6: this summer, working out, getting a little sweat in with
- 33:20Speaker 6: the guys, and all these fans come in with cameras
- 33:23Speaker 6: and they're you know.
- 33:24Speaker 5: They're doing that whole production.
- 33:26Speaker 6: I had no he was standing right across from me,
- 33:29Speaker 6: and I had no idea.
- 33:31Speaker 5: I had no clue.
- 33:32Speaker 6: They leave, the strength coaches are like, dude, you didn't
- 33:35Speaker 6: realize Baker was in there, and I'm like, I had
- 33:37Speaker 6: no idea. So I ended up going to the equipment
- 33:40Speaker 6: room poking my head in and seeing him. I mean
- 33:43Speaker 6: that's him though, right, like that whole act and that production.
- 33:48Speaker 6: That's him all the time, right, he's he's liked that
- 33:52Speaker 6: on the football field, he's like that in the meeting rooms.
- 33:55Speaker 6: But his the preparation, the way he does things, it's
- 33:58Speaker 6: it's phenomenal. So to me that that deal that they
- 34:02Speaker 6: did is truly who he is.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and you also happen to work with one of
- 34:07Speaker 1: the greatest wide receivers to ever suit up. Now, you
- 34:10Speaker 1: were in LA with Cup, You were in LA with
- 34:13Speaker 1: with a host of different weapons Odell that year. What's
- 34:17Speaker 1: Mike Evans bring to the table that maybe the viewer
- 34:19Speaker 1: listener at home doesn't know.
- 34:20Speaker 6: Well, the thing that you you don't realize about him
- 34:23Speaker 6: is until you get up close with him. First of all,
- 34:25Speaker 6: how big he is and how quick he is at
- 34:28Speaker 6: the line of scrimmage. His hand usage, the way that
- 34:31Speaker 6: he can shed and release off the line of scrimmage
- 34:34Speaker 6: for a person of his size is extremely impressive. And
- 34:37Speaker 6: then oh wait, he has seen a million different coverages
- 34:41Speaker 6: over the course of his career. He calls out coverage
- 34:45Speaker 6: before the snap happens all the time, all the time.
- 34:48Speaker 6: He'll be standing there, He'll see it, he'll peak, and
- 34:51Speaker 6: he'll call the coverage out before it even happens.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Is that common for a wide receiver.
- 34:56Speaker 5: I wouldn't say that coming.
- 34:58Speaker 6: I mean, you know, Cooper was extremely high football IQ.
- 35:01Speaker 6: He knew a lot of things. But Mike he has
- 35:04Speaker 6: seen probably more coverage defenses, you know, double teams and
- 35:09Speaker 6: different structures of trying to take him out of the game.
- 35:12Speaker 6: So he has such a good feel for leverage defenses,
- 35:17Speaker 6: the way they're tilted pre snap and how they move
- 35:20Speaker 6: post snap. I think that the viewers and fans would
- 35:23Speaker 6: have a even much higher appreciation for Mike if you
- 35:26Speaker 6: knew his IQ, his level of football knowledge and what
- 35:31Speaker 6: he puts into it.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Okay, as we wrap here, because we're going to earn
- 35:36Speaker 1: the offseason, you and I are going to do a
- 35:37Speaker 1: deep dive an hour on Liam Cohen's story, and maybe
- 35:40Speaker 1: we let the listeners in on how you and I
- 35:42Speaker 1: got to know each other in twenty eleven. Yes, we
- 35:46Speaker 1: have known each other for thirteen years, Liam, and you
- 35:49Speaker 1: know how proud I am and how awesome this is
- 35:51Speaker 1: to see you Helman and NFL offense. But I do
- 35:54Speaker 1: want to ask you your influences, because we really reconnected
- 35:58Speaker 1: when you got on mcveigh's staff, but you have been
- 36:01Speaker 1: around some great football minds. Take us through your coaching
- 36:04Speaker 1: journey just a little bit and who you pick and
- 36:06Speaker 1: pluck your stuff from as we see this awesome Bucks attack.
- 36:09Speaker 6: I think, first and foremost it starts for playing for
- 36:12Speaker 6: my dad and growing up watching him coach. I mean,
- 36:15Speaker 6: he was a Division III college head coach and high
- 36:18Speaker 6: school coach my entire career in life actually early on,
- 36:21Speaker 6: so a lot of the core fundamentals and beliefs come
- 36:25Speaker 6: from from him. And then as I go and play.
- 36:28Speaker 6: You go to college and I played for Don Brown
- 36:31Speaker 6: and one of our coaches on staff, Ryan Pacucci, was
- 36:34Speaker 6: my offensive line coach as a player. Yeah, hired him
- 36:38Speaker 6: this year, So a lot of those influences are still,
- 36:41Speaker 6: you know with me. And then I go and coach
- 36:43Speaker 6: from Mark Whipple, who is a really you know, really
- 36:47Speaker 6: you know, big offensive mind for a long time there
- 36:50Speaker 6: in the Northeast. And then you continue to move on
- 36:53Speaker 6: and then end up getting to LA and where I
- 36:55Speaker 6: really felt like I.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Got my PhD in coaching.
- 36:59Speaker 6: Is what I've kind of always said, is I learned
- 37:01Speaker 6: more about x'es and o's defense, offense, special teams, cold
- 37:06Speaker 6: sure people from Seawan And you know, he's one of
- 37:09Speaker 6: the biggest impacts and influences in my life, both on
- 37:13Speaker 6: and off the field.
- 37:14Speaker 5: So a lot of credit to those guys.
- 37:16Speaker 6: And as you continue to go and you're in the
- 37:18Speaker 6: SEC and you're watching other people do things and you
- 37:22Speaker 6: take things from other people. There's a lot of good
- 37:24Speaker 6: ball coaches out there, so a lot of those are
- 37:26Speaker 6: the people that I was influenced by, more so probably Sean.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and now you're with Todd Bowles and you're with
- 37:34Speaker 1: what looks to be a really good group of men,
- 37:37Speaker 1: both the coaches and the players. And on this one,
- 37:41Speaker 1: it's up to date. Here comes Rokwan Smith and here
- 37:45Speaker 1: comes Kyle Hamilton. We got a Monday night bout against
- 37:47Speaker 1: the Ravens. You had a busy week last week. Now
- 37:50Speaker 1: you got some actual Monday night football shine to it.
- 37:53Speaker 1: How are you preparing as we were a few days
- 37:55Speaker 1: in advance of what's going to be a huge showdown.
- 37:57Speaker 6: On MNF, huge challenge, Like you mentioned, I mean, this
- 38:00Speaker 6: is a group that salty. They're salty group. They run
- 38:03Speaker 6: to the football, they play physical, their their dynamic with
- 38:08Speaker 6: the way that they use you know, Marlon Humphreyes and
- 38:11Speaker 6: Hamilton and Rokwan and and those guys up front are
- 38:14Speaker 6: are are pretty dominating when they when they really are.
- 38:17Speaker 5: Getting after it.
- 38:18Speaker 6: So this is a huge challenge for us obviously, as
- 38:21Speaker 6: as it every week, but this one. They're number one
- 38:25Speaker 6: in rush defense in the National Football League. A lot
- 38:28Speaker 6: of times they're playing from a lead and getting ahead
- 38:30Speaker 6: on people so quickly. We have got to be able
- 38:33Speaker 6: to start fast and really kind of help dictate the
- 38:37Speaker 6: terms of the game, because if you get into a
- 38:39Speaker 6: one way match.
- 38:40Speaker 5: With these guys, it's going to be difficult.
- 38:42Speaker 6: If they know that you're just going to be dropping
- 38:43Speaker 6: back and throwing at every snap, They've got the ability
- 38:46Speaker 6: to rush for play coverage create a rush with those guys.
- 38:50Speaker 6: So I've got a ton of respect for this defense,
- 38:53Speaker 6: a ton of respect for this this organization that we're
- 38:56Speaker 6: going up against. It's going to be a great challenge
- 38:58Speaker 6: for us, but I think our guys will be ready.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Hot off the press. This might be breaking news for
- 39:02Speaker 1: you as you went straight from the practice field to
- 39:04Speaker 1: this podcast. Got an email from the official NFL email
- 39:08Speaker 1: account for immediate release Sean Tucker named the NFC Offensive
- 39:14Speaker 1: Player of the Week for Week six. Sean Tucker, second
- 39:17Speaker 1: year guy out of Syracuse, the best offensive player in
- 39:20Speaker 1: all of football. If you had told me that back
- 39:22Speaker 1: in August, I would have said, Okay, that's that's that's
- 39:24Speaker 1: a long shot. Your reaction to Sean Tucker being named
- 39:28Speaker 1: best single offensive player in the entire conference this week.
- 39:32Speaker 6: Just the credit to the kid to to you know,
- 39:35Speaker 6: stay with it. He Ever since we've gotten here as
- 39:38Speaker 6: the staff, all that guy's done is take diligent notes,
- 39:42Speaker 6: be engaged in all the meetings. Every time he's had
- 39:45Speaker 6: an opportunity in practice, in preseason games, he has tried
- 39:50Speaker 6: to show what he can do. He has stayed the
- 39:52Speaker 6: course when things weren't probably looking great for him at times.
- 39:57Speaker 6: And credit to coach Skip Peek for getting him ready
- 39:59Speaker 6: to play, obviously on a short week, and the guy
- 40:02Speaker 6: stayed prepared. He stayed ready, and it's just a great
- 40:06Speaker 6: He's just a great guy. So you really don't, you know,
- 40:09Speaker 6: you're so happy for him to have this moment one hundred.
- 40:14Speaker 1: And ninety two yards from scrimmage, and then his teammate
- 40:16Speaker 1: Bucky Irving had eighty yards on the ground in forty yards,
- 40:19Speaker 1: receiving pretty good running attack out of there from the
- 40:21Speaker 1: Tampa Bay running backs. Skip Pete of course, the running
- 40:23Speaker 1: backs coach. But Liam Cohen, you are the offensive coordinator.
- 40:26Speaker 1: We are so appreciative of your time. Go back to
- 40:28Speaker 1: game planning and go figure out a way to light
- 40:31Speaker 1: up that Ravens defense.
- 40:32Speaker 5: Thank you, Peter, appreciate him.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Man.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Awesome job. Liam Cohen, offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Our guest on the season with Peter Schrager. Keep an
- 40:40Speaker 1: eye on him, keep an eye on the Buccaneers. Can't
- 40:42Speaker 1: wait to have a bigger conversation with Liam this office.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Liam Cohen awesome guy in a offensive genius. I think,
- 40:58Speaker 1: I mean the way he's performing right now in Tampa
- 41:00Speaker 1: in his first year, a year after Canalis left, where
- 41:02Speaker 1: everyone thought, wow, they finally have some continuity, and they
- 41:05Speaker 1: finally have and then Canalis pieces and Liam steps in
- 41:09Speaker 1: and it's hasn't missed a beat. I mentioned that I've
- 41:12Speaker 1: known him for eleven years. Are you curious why the
- 41:14Speaker 1: hell I would know Liam Cohen for eleven years?
- 41:17Speaker 3: Eron?
- 41:17Speaker 2: Yeah, eleven years is a long time too. This isn't
- 41:19Speaker 2: this sounds like, it's not just a story that's like
- 41:21Speaker 2: we went to the Senior Bowl and I ran into him.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Right, it's actually thirteen years So in twenty eleven, Victor
- 41:28Speaker 1: Cruz has this amazing, you know, career year and that
- 41:32Speaker 1: does the Salsa dance, and the Giants win a Super
- 41:34Speaker 1: Bowl and a book company, Penguin gives him a book
- 41:38Speaker 1: deal and pays him a lot of money to write
- 41:39Speaker 1: a book. But you know, it's an overnight success, and
- 41:42Speaker 1: they're like, we need the book out very quickly because
- 41:46Speaker 1: this is going to sell and we want it before
- 41:48Speaker 1: the summer and before next season. So we need to
- 41:51Speaker 1: a sign a book deal and b write the book,
- 41:53Speaker 1: and then d we're gonna get you, you know, on
- 41:57Speaker 1: the bookshelf so we can sell this thing and have
- 41:59Speaker 1: it be a summer read. Victor is presented with like
- 42:03Speaker 1: fifteen different like beat reporters and writers and I've told
- 42:06Speaker 1: this story before, and they're all in there trying to
- 42:09Speaker 1: pitch themselves to Victor, and he doesn't gel with any
- 42:11Speaker 1: of them. I wrote like a two hundred word like
- 42:14Speaker 1: a little blurb on Victor for GQ magazine a couple
- 42:18Speaker 1: months before his Super Bowl and after all he meets
- 42:21Speaker 1: all these guys, his agent, Carlos and him come in.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Then I get a random call, like you know, out
- 42:26Speaker 1: of nowhere from a woman named Kerry Colan who was
- 42:29Speaker 1: working at the publishing house. And she's like, Victor Cruz
- 42:34Speaker 1: and his agent want to meet with you about writing
- 42:35Speaker 1: this book with him. I've never written a book. I
- 42:37Speaker 1: have no idea what that is. Long story short. I
- 42:39Speaker 1: get the gig. Victor gets this, you know, giant advance
- 42:44Speaker 1: for a book deal. I get about a penny of it,
- 42:47Speaker 1: and then we decide that we're going to write a
- 42:48Speaker 1: book here together and it's going to be the right
- 42:50Speaker 1: of our lives. I get there and Victor and I
- 42:54Speaker 1: start talking about his life, and his life is both
- 42:57Speaker 1: beautiful and tragic and inspiring.
- 43:00Speaker 5: You know.
- 43:00Speaker 1: He lost his father at a young age. His mother
- 43:03Speaker 1: was supporting him, he dropped out a square well at UMass,
- 43:07Speaker 1: he was suspended, all these things. And along the way
- 43:10Speaker 1: there's these gaps of like I need football, like I
- 43:13Speaker 1: need to know like some of the football stuff from
- 43:15Speaker 1: your college days. And Victor said, you know, he should
- 43:17Speaker 1: talk to you should talk to my college quarterback at
- 43:19Speaker 1: U Mass, Liam Cohen. I don't who's Liam Cohne. He's like,
- 43:22Speaker 1: he's he's my college quarterback. He's also was my college roommate.
- 43:27Speaker 1: I'm like at UMass, all right, give me this guy's number.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Callup Liam. Immediately. I love Liam. We have this amazing connection.
- 43:34Speaker 1: And Liam and I basically are on the phone for
- 43:38Speaker 1: about a week straight, for three hours piece, him telling
- 43:41Speaker 1: me stories about Victor in college and his college exploits
- 43:44Speaker 1: as a player, also like some of their great high
- 43:47Speaker 1: jinks as friends, and it helped fill a lot of
- 43:51Speaker 1: the color behind you know, the ex's and I was
- 43:53Speaker 1: in the numbers and whatever facts that had. Anyway, fast
- 43:56Speaker 1: forward all these years, I'm at Rams camp and sure
- 44:01Speaker 1: enough there's Liam Cohen, like Shreger. I'm like, hey, who's
- 44:04Speaker 1: this guy? Liam Cohen? First time I ever met him
- 44:06Speaker 1: in person. We hit it off. We keep in touch.
- 44:10Speaker 1: He zipped through this thing. Will Levis has a huge breakout.
- 44:12Speaker 1: You're at Kentucky. Liam Cohen is the offensive coordinator there.
- 44:15Speaker 1: He gets a gig, you know with the Buccaneers as
- 44:19Speaker 1: the you know, offensive coordinator in Tampa, and I couldn't
- 44:23Speaker 1: be happier for him. So that is my connection to
- 44:25Speaker 1: Liam Cohen. And now he's flexing on him. He is unbelievable.
- 44:29Speaker 1: He's having a great ride and it was kind of
- 44:31Speaker 1: cool to reveal the offensive player of the week to
- 44:33Speaker 1: the coach who had not heard that before.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and I love that that Sean Tucker got it.
- 44:39Speaker 2: I mean, especially as a kid.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Who he he he was drafted last year.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I think he did.
- 44:45Speaker 1: He the second year guy from Syracuse. I know every
- 44:47Speaker 1: player in the draft. I have no recollection of Sean Tucker.
- 44:50Speaker 2: And he just I know people were excited about the
- 44:53Speaker 2: potential he had, but he didn't really do too much
- 44:56Speaker 2: last year.
- 44:56Speaker 1: No idea and b I has been this.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Shining light for them and then out of nowhere, boom,
- 45:02Speaker 2: he comes in and has this amazing gages.
- 45:04Speaker 1: He delivered and for that, we're gonna give him Award two.
- 45:09Speaker 1: This is the season with Peter Schrigger delivering results presented
- 45:11Speaker 1: by our friends at uber eats, it is time to
- 45:13Speaker 1: give our award for who delivered the results presented by

- 45:19Speaker 1: Tucker of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers one hundred and ninety
- 45:23Speaker 1: two yards from scrimmage in a breakout game for a
- 45:27Speaker 1: second year player out of Syracuse. Sean Tucker a part
- 45:30Speaker 1: of an offense that put up five hundred and ninety
- 45:32Speaker 1: four yards last week in New Orleans in a blowout win.
- 45:37Speaker 1: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are one of the most fun
- 45:40Speaker 1: teams to watch on offense, and they've got weapons coming
- 45:42Speaker 1: from every angle insert Sean Tucker. He was the NFC's
- 45:47Speaker 1: Offensive player of the Week, as revealed on this podcast
- 45:49Speaker 1: to his coach, and now he is the winner of
