- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. We are so happy to be back with you today. Lucas: We have been talking about directions and feelings recently. Luna: Yes. But today we want to talk about something different. Lucas: What is it? Is it food? Luna: No. It is about sound. How do we describe sounds in Malay? Lucas: That is a great topic. First, we need the word for 'sound' or 'noise'. Luna: Okay. What is the word? Lucas: The word is 'bunyi'. Let me say it slowly. Lucas: Bunyi.... Bunyi. Luna: Bunyi. Okay. That means sound. Lucas: Exactly. Now let us make a question. How do we ask 'What is that sound?' Lucas: We use 'Apa' for what, and 'itu' for that. Lucas: So: 'Bunyi apa itu?' Listen to this. Lucas: Bunyi apa itu?... Bunyi apa itu? Luna: Bunyi apa itu? Wait. Does it mean 'What sound is that?' Lucas: Yes. Or simply 'What is that noise?' Luna: I can use that. If I hear something strange outside my window. Lucas: Exactly. You point and ask. 'Bunyi apa itu?' Luna: Let me try again. Bunyi apa itu? Lucas: Perfect. Very clear. Now let us learn how to answer. Lucas: Imagine the sound is very loud. Noisy. Luna: Oh yes. Construction work next door. Lucas: Right. The word for noisy is 'bising'. Lucas: Say it with me. Bising. Lucas: Bising.... Bising. Luna: Bising. Okay. So if I want to say 'That is a noisy sound.' Lucas: We say 'Itu'. That. 'Bunyi'. Sound. 'Yang'. Which/That is. 'Bising'. Noisy. Lucas: So the phrase is: 'Itu bunyi yang bising.' Lucas: Listen carefully. Itu bunyi yang bising. Luna: Itu bunyi yang bising. Wow. That feels long but easy. Lucas: It is just four words put together. Itu. Bunyi. Yang. Bising. Luna: Let me say it. Itu bunyi yang bising. Lucas: Good. One more time. Itu bunyi yang bising. Luna: Itu bunyi yang bising. I love how 'yang' connects things. Lucas: It does. It makes sentences flow. Now let us look at the opposite. Luna: Opposite of noisy? Lucas: Yes. Silent. Quiet. Peaceful. Lucas: The word is 'sunyi'. Luna: Sunyi. Like sunshine but without the shine? Lucas: Close enough. Sunyi means silent or still. Lucas: Say it. Sunyi. Lucas: Sunyi.... Sunyi. Luna: Sunyi. Okay. So if I want to say 'I like a place that is silent.' Lucas: We learned 'I like' in a previous episode. It is 'Saya suka'. Luna: Right. Saya suka. Then 'place' is 'tempat'. Lucas: Yes. And 'that is' uses 'yang' again. Lucas: So: 'Saya suka tempat yang sunyi.' Lucas: Listen. Saya suka tempat yang sunyi. Luna: Saya suka tempat yang sunyi. Oh that is beautiful. Lucas: It is. It is a nice feeling. Say it with me. Lucas: Saya suka tempat yang sunyi. Luna: Saya suka tempat yang sunyi. I really like that one. Lucas: Me too. It reminds me of a library. Or a forest. Luna: Or a deep sleep. After a long day. Lucas: Exactly. Now let us combine these ideas. Luna: How do we tell someone to be quiet? Lucas: Good question. We use the verb 'buat' which means 'to make' or 'to do'. Luna: Buat. Okay. Lucas: To say 'Do not make loud noise.' We start with 'Jangan'. Luna: Jangan. Don't. Yes. Lucas: Then 'buat'. Make. 'Bunyi'. Noise. 'Kuat'. Loud. Luna: Kuat. Loud. I think I know this word from before. Lucas: You might. It means strong or loud. So the phrase is: Lucas: 'Jangan buat bunyi kuat.' Lucas: Listen. Jangan buat bunyi kuat. Luna: Jangan buat bunyi kuat. Stop it. That sounds firm. Lucas: It is useful. If someone is talking loudly on the phone. Luna: Or playing music too loud in a cafe. Lucas: Yes. Jangan buat bunyi kuat. Say it with me. Lucas: Jangan buat bunyi kuat. Luna: Jangan buat bunyi kuat. Got it. Lucas: Now let us review all four phrases we learned today. Luna: Okay. Let's go. First one? Lucas: Questioning the sound. 'Bunyi apa itu?' Luna: Bunyi apa itu? Lucas: Describing it as noisy. 'Itu bunyi yang bising.' Luna: Itu bunyi yang bising. Lucas: Stating preference for silence. 'Saya suka tempat yang sunyi.' Luna: Saya suka tempat yang sunyi. Lucas: Asking for quiet. 'Jangan buat bunyi kuat.' Luna: Jangan buat bunyi kuat. Lucas: Excellent work. You are doing very well. Luna: Thank you, Lucas. My ears feel sharper already. Lucas: They should. Thank you. Lucas: Now back to our sounds. Imagine you are in a market. Luna: A busy market. Many people selling things. Lucas: It would be very noisy. You could say: Luna: Itu bunyi yang bising. Lucas: But then you walk away to a quiet garden. Luna: And you sigh with relief. Saya suka tempat yang sunyi. Lucas: Perfect contrast. You are using the words naturally. Luna: It feels good. Like I actually understand the world around me. Lucas: That is the goal. To understand your surroundings. Luna: One last check. What was the word for loud again? Lucas: Kuat. In the phrase 'Jangan buat bunyi kuat.' Luna: Kuat. Loud. Strong. Okay. I will remember that. Lucas: And 'bising' is noisy. 'Sunyi' is silent. Luna: Bising. Sunyi. Got it. Lucas: Great practice. Keep repeating them in your head. Luna: I will. Especially when I am trying to sleep. Lucas: Then whisper 'Saya suka tempat yang sunyi' to yourself. Luna: Good idea. It might help me relax. Lucas: I hope so. Learning can be tiring sometimes. Luna: It can be. But it is also fun. Lucas: Absolutely. Fun is important. Luna: Thanks for being patient with me, Lucas. Lucas: Always, Luna. And thanks to you, the listener. Luna: Practice these phrases. Say them out loud. Lucas: We will see you next time for more Malay. Luna: Bye for now! Stay curious.
