Latest / The Rocker Skating Podcast / Milan Olympics Recap: Pairs
Transcript
- 0:05Welcome to the Rocker skating podcast, sponsored by John
- 0:08Wilson. Blade.
- 0:09I don't have to open a bottle of wine today because the pairs
- 0:13free skate was so good and there was such good skating going on
- 0:22today and I just I, I, I it was happy to see we were all happy
- 0:30to see how much this felt like a competition where people were
- 0:39out there to win. People were out there to skate
- 0:45their best and not really be afraid.
- 0:49You know, we'll talk about how it all shook out, but it really
- 0:54was a a really well skated event today.
- 0:57And I will not take anyone telling me that it was not a
- 1:02well skated event. But the final was Miura Kihara
- 1:12moving up from a very disappointing short program to
- 1:18win their first Olympic title and Japan's first Olympic medal
- 1:27in pairs and of course Japan's first Olympic title in pairs.
- 1:35And I'll talk about the significance of this whole thing
- 1:38because, you know, if you would have said to me 8 years ago that
- 1:49within a decade there would be a Japanese pair who would win the
- 1:58Olympics, I would laugh. Everybody would laugh.
- 2:03I mean like the the Japanese pair's game back in the day was
- 2:07not that strong. And Rico Mira and Ricci Kiara
- 2:14has just swung the doors wide open for not only Japanese
- 2:23skating, but Japanese pair skating.
- 2:26They are going to inspire so many skaters to be interested in
- 2:34pairs, to be picking up pairs, much like how Daisuke Takahashi
- 2:40and Kana Muramoto inspired a bunch of skaters to go into ice
- 2:45dance. And ice dance in Japan has had a
- 2:50a longer history and has had a more celebrated history, right?
- 2:54With with the reeds, with with Rita Muramoto and then with
- 3:02Daisuke in Kana and with Tim and Misato, right?
- 3:07Like they have a history. Japanese pairs does not have a
- 3:13history at all. And I, I went back to my post
- 3:25from September 2019 when Megan Duhamel heard that I was coming
- 3:34to Toronto for Autumn Classic. And she said, hey, you got to
- 3:42come see this pair. And I was like, oh, interesting.
- 3:48She must be really excited about this pair.
- 3:51And, and then she was like, oh, it's a Japanese pair.
- 3:53And I'm like, oh, interesting Japanese pair.
- 3:57And it turned out it was Riku and Ricci.
- 4:00And from the moment that I saw them skate, I was like, there's
- 4:08something really special about this pair.
- 4:13I'm not going to be the one who says that.
- 4:15I knew they were going to be Olympic champions when I saw
- 4:17them in September 2019. I knew they were special.
- 4:23But little did I know how far they would come in a matter of
- 4:28seven, 6 1/2 years to not only right be in their second
- 4:35Olympics and having won two world titles and two world
- 4:42silver medals, but to be able to be here and skate one of the
- 4:47epic, epic programs in Olympic history in pair skating.
- 4:53It's phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal.
- 4:57Let's talk about the whole pairs event because a lot of stuff
- 5:00happened. I I'm going to do a little bit
- 5:02of a, a re telling of what happened in the short program
- 5:08before we go into the free escape because I want to set
- 5:11that context for you all. The short program was yesterday.
- 5:15Good Lord, it was yesterday and it was a very, I will still call
- 5:23it a very well skated event. And what was interesting about
- 5:28it was all of the the vast majority of the well skatedness
- 5:34of the whole thing yesterday. And the pair short program was
- 5:39earlier on in the in the event the last group was less well
- 5:45skated and and I think that left a bit of a sour taste in
- 5:52people's mouths. But you kind of look at what
- 5:55happened and we're talking about, you know, just getting
- 6:02into the top 16 to qualify for the free 3 skate, you needed a
- 6:0664.65. That's what the Kovalev's got in
- 6:1016th place. And just to get into the top
- 6:15ten, you needed a 69 point O 8. Like these are huge scores.
- 6:20And the reason they were huge scores is because so many of
- 6:23these teams skated clean programs.
- 6:27And add to the fact that Danilova Shiba and Golubieva
- 6:33Giotapis Mort both skated clean programs and didn't make it into
- 6:37the free skate. That's why I keep saying that
- 6:42this was a really well skated event as an entirety.
- 6:46The depth of this set of short programs was just so strong.
- 6:53And you saw a personal best, seasoned best, like, all over
- 6:57the place. And, and it's fun, but you got
- 7:02to the last group and all of a sudden you're like, oh, no.
- 7:05Like, yeah, they were getting big scores because they get big
- 7:09scores. But they were also not skating
- 7:11cleanly, right? You know, Kanti Machi didn't
- 7:16skate a clean short. Mattel Kina Barouva didn't skate
- 7:20a clean short. Miyor Kihara had a huge mistake
- 7:24on the lift that left them in 5th place, cost them like 11
- 7:29points. And then you got then the final
- 7:36pair, it was Hassan Volodin, Minerva Hassan, Nikita Volodin
- 7:40who came and delivered and they went into the free skate with a
- 7:454 1/2 point lead over Mattel Kina Barullova and a an almost 7
- 7:52point lead over Mira Kiara. We knew, however, that a 7 point
- 7:59lead is not insurmountable given how Mira Kiara can skate and can
- 8:05score. So that was how we ended that
- 8:10first day. And we also ended the first day
- 8:12with Leah Pereira print me show over exceeding expectations
- 8:17being in the third. And frankly, I thought they
- 8:19should have been second after the short program and Maria
- 8:22Pavlova and Alexis Vyachenko being in fourth after also a
- 8:27clean program. I mean, they they skate clean
- 8:29programs all the time. And that's that's what they do
- 8:32and that's what they're known for.
- 8:34And that was how we started. And so Fast forward 20 hours
- 8:42later, it was a very quick turn around.
- 8:45Paris free skate happened and we started off again with some very
- 8:50strong programs. The Kovalev's went and skated
- 8:55one of the best programs that they, they had skated all
- 8:57season, if not the best. Shatinia and and Wozniak were
- 9:05beside themselves. I, I love this story because the
- 9:11moment I saw Yulia, she was like, I'm here and I'm like, oh,
- 9:16right. She was supposed to have been in
- 9:19Beijing. She and Mark Magyar, who is her
- 9:22old partner, had qualified for the the Beijing Olympics.
- 9:28And Mark Magyar got COVID right before the Olympics and they had
- 9:33to withdraw. And so Julia didn't get her
- 9:37chance to skate at an Olympics. And so for her to be here and
- 9:43also to skate that extra program in the team event because they
- 9:49the Poland had qualified A-Team to the team event, They they,
- 9:55they have just been having so much fun.
- 9:57Every single time I see the two of them, it's them just soaking
- 10:02up the whole environment. And they were, they were just so
- 10:06good. And, and I loved that they were
- 10:10able to climb back up from what was a bit of a shaky start to
- 10:15their season and deliver the programs like this that they
- 10:18did. So those two were, were
- 10:22fantastic. Then that was how we started the
- 10:26free skate. And then we had Deanna and Max
- 10:30and plenty of you know how, you know how how this season has
- 10:41gone for Deanna Stellato and Maxime Duchamp.
- 10:44And you know that it's been a tough one.
- 10:49It's been full of inconsistencies.
- 10:54And then it's also been just generally kind of one.
- 11:01Maybe they wanted it too much. It was just things were things
- 11:06were not clicking for them, right?
- 11:08And then they lost the title, their Canadian title, like
- 11:12Canadian nationals at the beginning of January.
- 11:14And you're like, this is just like the season has just been so
- 11:17rough. And then Diane Salado has an
- 11:22accident 10 days before, well, like less than a week before
- 11:28they were about to go to Milan for the for the team event and
- 11:35they had to withdraw from the team event.
- 11:36And we all were just like, is the dream over?
- 11:42Has Deanna Stellato lost her opportunity to become an
- 11:48Olympian after all this, After the comeback from retirement,
- 11:55after switching countries, after doing everything under the sun
- 12:01that they could to make it to the Olympics and be one of the
- 12:05top pair teams in the world, was it over?
- 12:10And we found out it wasn't over. And it was just so amazing just
- 12:18to know that they have made it here.
- 12:21Like I literally just kept being like, I don't care if they even
- 12:24make it into a free skate. Like the fact I'm in, like
- 12:27Deanna Stellato cares if she makes it to the free skate.
- 12:30But I just, I just the story could not have ended with them
- 12:38not making it to the Olympics. And it, it would have been just
- 12:41a cruel, cruel twist of faith if, if fate, if that was what
- 12:46happened, it wasn't. So we're good.
- 12:50But the short program was just like, Oh my goodness.
- 12:53They, they had a freak fall on the, on the end of their lift,
- 12:57which cost them seven points, eight points.
- 13:01I mean, they if you, if you just looked at what happened in the
- 13:05short program, you, you add those points back to to their
- 13:09score, they would have probably been in 3rd, maybe even a little
- 13:17bit higher. I don't know, Like it's it, it
- 13:20you'll never know. We'll never know what happened,
- 13:22but what would have happened? But the fact of the matter is
- 13:27Dianna Stellato and Maxine Deschamps came and they made
- 13:31their Olympic experience. Their free skate was fine.
- 13:37They were struggling with the side by sides, but she really
- 13:42hard fall in warm up at the audience gasped at and it was in
- 13:47that same corner, ironically, where she fell in the in the
- 13:52short program on the on the lift.
- 13:56And it was like, Oh my gosh, it was like, Oh my God, Deja vu.
- 14:03And then and then they finished the program and she said to Max,
- 14:09I think I broke my nose. Add that to the list.
- 14:12Turns out she hasn't broken her nose.
- 14:15She told me that the doctors looked at her nose.
- 14:18It was fine, just just like sore and it was bleeding a little
- 14:23bit. I think I was talking to Ting
- 14:27Chui and she was saying that it looked like in her ending pose,
- 14:33Deanna was had like, you know, done something in the ending
- 14:40pose where she hit her nose on Max and she felt it right away.
- 14:46And so when they were hugging to celebrate the end of the
- 14:49program, she was also holding her nose.
- 14:52So that's what happened. But you know, like I can add
- 14:56that to the list, but Diane Salado and Maxine the shop end
- 15:00up 11th. They moved up a little bit, but
- 15:03the fact that they skated OK, but not great, but still didn't
- 15:08end up getting the top 10 means that there was a lot of good
- 15:11skating to come. So, you know, the next group
- 15:17gave us some really fun skating and Haka Kunkel, Ghilardi,
- 15:23Amberzini, the two crowd pleasers of this bunch, they
- 15:29went out there and did so well. And you know, Annika and Robert,
- 15:34probably that was the performance of their career
- 15:37totally underscored, especially on presentation.
- 15:41And then same thing with with Gillardi Ambrosini.
- 15:46They they, they skipped a program that was not as
- 15:50difficult as everybody else's because they had watered down
- 15:53side by side, you know, over the past few years.
- 15:58But it was clean. They did a really great job.
- 16:01And again, they're like the presentation scores should have
- 16:05been higher because they really do sell that program and and
- 16:09they didn't, didn't get the credit for it.
- 16:13Too bad. It was, it was too bad for the
- 16:16scores, but it was great to see the two of them, these two teams
- 16:20just go out there and skate the way that they did.
- 16:23And especially for Rebecca and Filo, this could have been their
- 16:28last performance. And for them to have done this
- 16:34in front of a home crowd and skated that well.
- 16:40And you can't ask for much more than that.
- 16:44And then we ended that group with Emily Chan and Spencer
- 16:47Howe. And if anybody remembers US
- 16:50Nationals, you'd know that one. It was a very close race between
- 16:56them and Audrey Shin and Balaji Naj for that second spot for the
- 17:02Olympic team. But 2, they left US nationals
- 17:06kind of being like, like, is that the best we can do it?
- 17:10Like it they they moved up after the short program, but the free
- 17:14skate was still sort of like, OK, we can do better.
- 17:18And then they come here and they skate one of the best short
- 17:22programs they've ever skated. And then they will go to the
- 17:25free skate and they skate one of the best free skates that
- 17:28they've ever skated. I like it was just it it it was
- 17:31really good to see the the really big issue was Emily Chan
- 17:35falling on on her solo triple toe.
- 17:40But they opened with a really nice triple sound double axe,
- 17:44double Axel. Might have been the first time
- 17:46I've ever seen them hit that combo anywhere, including
- 17:51practices I'd like. I might be wrong but begs the
- 17:56question as to why she's not why they're not doing the side by
- 18:00side triple sows in the short program.
- 18:02Because the the sow has been really hit.
- 18:06It hit for them in at National and frankly, I that was that was
- 18:12the combo that got them to the Olympics.
- 18:15Like if they hadn't done the the triple sows and it was a triple,
- 18:18they I think they only did 1 double axle out of it.
- 18:21But if it weren't for that triple sow at nationals, they
- 18:25wouldn't be here right now. And they really made the best
- 18:30out of this, this event for them.
- 18:35And they end up 7th, 7th at the Olympics for a team who many,
- 18:44including me, expected to not be in the top ten.
- 18:47That was just a fantastic skate. And, and, and they really proved
- 18:54themselves here, you know, not only to the pundits, but also I
- 18:59think to themselves, I think they've, they they had doubted
- 19:03themselves after Spencer house surgery and, you know, the long
- 19:11time it took him to, to get his shoulder back in shape, all of
- 19:15that sort of stuff. And now they are a top seven at
- 19:21the Olympics. And, and you know, it's, it's,
- 19:24it's great, great to see. So that was the first two groups
- 19:29that it was, it was a, it was a really good start to the event.
- 19:33But then we knew, yeah, we had eight pairs who really all could
- 19:39lay it down. And, you know, Sarakanti
- 19:44Nikumachi had probably the worst skate of their Olympics.
- 19:49It was, it was difficult, right? I, I, I, I watched her step out
- 19:58of her double axle and I saw her knee buckle and her, it was her
- 20:02right knee, right? Her right knee is the one that
- 20:04was injured. A month and a half ago and I I,
- 20:10my heart stopped a little bit because I was like, what's
- 20:14what's going to happen? Did she reinjure anything?
- 20:16Luckily everything else looked fine, but I do think she was,
- 20:22she was a little bit cautious and everything was just a little
- 20:25bit off. And there were a bunch of
- 20:30errors, minor errors that all added up to a lot.
- 20:36And so they, they, you know, a lot of them had expected them to
- 20:43be, a lot of folks had expected them to be in the conversation
- 20:49for the medals and all those mistakes just come out of it
- 20:54completely. But they they were still the
- 20:57leaders with the last 7 left. And then the defending Olympic
- 21:02champions came on and Wenjing Sway and Songhat were as good as
- 21:09we had seen them all season long.
- 21:13And even though Wenjing Sway had singled her triple toe and then
- 21:19they they elected to go with double sow cows instead of
- 21:22triple sow cows. Everything else was really good.
- 21:26The lifts were the best that we've seen all season from them.
- 21:30They were still small. They were still not, not to the
- 21:34same kind of quality that we had seen from them when they were at
- 21:38their best, but they were great and, and it was really good to
- 21:43see if this was the last event that they have that you know, of
- 21:47their careers, they've got to be proud that they were able to
- 21:52pull it all together for this individual event and finish in
- 21:55the top five. So they were 5th here after all
- 21:58of that was said and done and hilariously in the mixed zone
- 22:03when doing sway. When they asked her what was
- 22:08next for her, she said I can't wait to get into my mobile home
- 22:15with my pet meerkat and go around and sell coffee.
- 22:20Like this is not a joke. Like, she has a pet meerkat, she
- 22:25has a mobile home, and this is what she wants to do.
- 22:29So go buy some coffee from Wendy Sway.
- 22:32I hope. I hope she makes some good
- 22:34coffee. I should.
- 22:36I should see if she and Robert Kunkle are talking about coffee
- 22:40because Robert Kunkle is a huge espresso nerd and he and I talk
- 22:45about espresso all the time. Like he has his own like barista
- 22:51set up in his hotel room every single time he travels to
- 22:54competitions that is like a professional setup.
- 22:58This guy is nuts about coffee. And like when I find people who
- 23:03are more knowledgeable about coffee than I am, it's like it's
- 23:07kind of mind blowing. I'm less knowledgeable about
- 23:10coffee as I am just a drinker of coffee.
- 23:14Maybe so. So that was Swayne Hahn and they
- 23:24they skated incredibly well and and Cam and O'Shea who went
- 23:28before them, had a couple mistakes they ended up dropping.
- 23:32You can't take the team event heroics away from them.
- 23:39I know they have to be disappointed with how they
- 23:41skated here, but they still they also finished in the top ten.
- 23:46There were ninth here and two US parents in the top ten.
- 23:50Who would have thought? So then it was time for Riku
- 23:57Mira and Rishiki Hara. We knew what the stakes were, we
- 24:04knew what the deficit was. They knew what they had to do
- 24:08and they knew they had to be clean.
- 24:11In order for them to give themselves the best shot of
- 24:17contending for that gold medal, they had to be clean.
- 24:22And clean they were. They skated exactly like what we
- 24:28have seen from them all week. Confident, clean.
- 24:33Everything was done spectacularly well.
- 24:38The only level they missed, the only little thing that was an
- 24:43issue was that they got a Level 3 on their triple twist and not
- 24:46a level 4. They almost always get a Level 3
- 24:49on their triple twist. And it looked like it was
- 24:53probably the the the split that they didn't get credit for
- 24:57because it looked like they the catch was clean.
- 25:00So that was the only thing. And this is better than how they
- 25:05ski in the team event. And we knew in the team they got
- 25:08155. And so we knew that this was
- 25:11going to be a better score and the judges weren't going to hold
- 25:16back Then you know, this is this is at their best, the best pair
- 25:21in the world. And they gave them best pair in
- 25:23the world scores. It was a 158.
- 25:27I was I was kind of looking at those scores and being like, you
- 25:30could have gone to a 159. If they would have been last
- 25:32said this kid like that, they probably would have broken what,
- 25:3560? They probably would have given
- 25:36them like 77 on their components, but you know the
- 25:45one. The 1:58 that they got meant
- 25:49that the only pair who could have overtaken them, given how
- 25:57the short programs went, were Hassa, Volodin, and Haas of all.
- 26:04Then going with an 80 point short program meant that they
- 26:08needed to be like a 151 and they got a 149 at the Grand Prix
- 26:16Final. Something something to that
- 26:18effect. And at the Grand Prix Final,
- 26:20they were pretty much flawless. So that was going to be the
- 26:28gauntlet. That was going to be the
- 26:30standard that they set. I did not say anything or tell
- 26:36anyone, but I was pretty confident that that was your
- 26:39Olympic champions right there. Because even if Minerva and, you
- 26:45know, had skated Florida State, it would have still been tough
- 26:49for them to get that 150. It just you know, that's just
- 26:54how they even scored And and the the quality is is not as as
- 26:58high, but we'll never know. I guess that final group can
- 27:04comes in and Pavlova Spyatchenko get again skates a clean
- 27:12program, not quite as free and open as they were in the short.
- 27:20There was some really great moments in that program, but
- 27:24they skated smaller today and the lifts especially were not
- 27:29getting in as much of that ice coverage.
- 27:33The side by sides are great. Throws were great, but it was
- 27:36the other things in there that that some from getting a bigger
- 27:40score. And you know, I think the the
- 27:45their improvements over the past season are very noticeable And I
- 27:51I think they're going to keep going and, you know, watch out
- 27:55these next four years. They we've been proving like
- 27:58this. They're going to they, they
- 27:59really, they really will be amongst that, that top group
- 28:03because they can jump, they can throw, they can do all that
- 28:08stuff that they can do it consistently.
- 28:10And let's hope that they can get to that, that level of basics
- 28:19and and you know, and flow and glutton all that they've already
- 28:23been improving on. They finished fourth and it was
- 28:27a great, great event for the Hungarians.
- 28:34Leah Pereira, Trent Michelle went next and just couldn't
- 28:38maintain what they had in in the short program.
- 28:43Trent Michelle fell his solo triple S Cal and then there was
- 28:48a step out on the throw loop. So just you know, not what they
- 28:53did in the team event left a lot of points on the table and ended
- 28:58up in place. It was a it was a pretty big
- 29:01drop given the the the mistakes and and all that.
- 29:07And it was close right amongst those top teeth.
- 29:09And so one huge mistake like they had with the side by side
- 29:13triple S cow and that was it was it was tough to recover from it.
- 29:21And so we end for the final two. And Matel Kina Baruva have been
- 29:27known to fall apart in big, big stressful pressure situations.
- 29:33And they did not today. They they skated.
- 29:37The only thing that was an issue was they step out on the triple,
- 29:42the third triple loop. Everything else was great.
- 29:46They did as well as really they, they, they could have done and
- 29:51they set themselves up with Hasseval and left to go.
- 29:55They set themselves up to potentially win a silver medal
- 30:00because they they go right behind Mira Ciara, but it was
- 30:06right behind by 10 points right. The the gap was already there.
- 30:11But I did find out today, I've been complaining about this all
- 30:15week, that there is that the phone rings in the middle of
- 30:19their program and nobody answers it.
- 30:22I've been watching them do that program and when the phone
- 30:27rings, Anastasia Mattelkina actually has her right hand
- 30:33covering her right ear. And when the phone rings, she
- 30:39takes the hand off of her ear. So I take that to be her
- 30:43answering the phone. So Mattelkina, you answered the
- 30:46phone. Thank you.
- 30:50So we end up with the last, last skaters, right?
- 30:53Minerva and Nikita come on with. They knew that there was a big
- 31:00score that went up for Rico and Ricci.
- 31:03I can't imagine that they didn't know.
- 31:06They certainly heard that a 221 from the Telkina Barolova went
- 31:13behind Mira Kihara into second place.
- 31:18So they probably knew what they had to do.
- 31:20They probably knew they had to be flawless And but never Hassa
- 31:29puts her foot down on her opening side by side combo.
- 31:35And I feel like you could just hear, you could hear it in her
- 31:39brain, like, uh oh, I'm not flawless and we're not flawless.
- 31:44And maybe at that point they, they already were, especially
- 31:50Minerva was already like, maybe the Olympic gold has slipped
- 31:54away. And it was a very quick 15
- 31:59second turn around to their next element, which was another solo
- 32:02jump. And Minerva goes and pops that
- 32:07triple S cow. And it was very reminiscent of
- 32:11what we saw at the Grand Prix Final in the short program where
- 32:14she just it, she probably just overthought it.
- 32:18And right there, the gold was gone and the silver was gone.
- 32:22They needed to be perfect to beat Mirror Kihara, to have a
- 32:28chance to beat Mirror Kihara. And they needed to not make a
- 32:31major mistake for them to still stay ahead of Batelkina
- 32:35Borulova. And they made a big mistake that
- 32:38that pops out cost them probably a good four or five points.
- 32:46They they got it together and scared the rest of it.
- 32:49Well, but still, it wasn't the kind of effortlessness that
- 32:54we've seen from them. The the lifts were fine.
- 32:57They weren't great. The the throw triple loop, the
- 33:02one that she fell on at Europeans, it was a little bit
- 33:04tight. It was just like they held on to
- 33:08it and they held on to that bronze medal and it and, and
- 33:13they, they, they knew when they got off the ice that the, the
- 33:18gold was gone and likely the silver was gone and they were
- 33:22hoping to, to be staying on the podium.
- 33:25And they did. And that that was that was your
- 33:28top 3. Mira Ciara again with the
- 33:32historic gold medal or Japan, Mattelkina Berulova with a
- 33:41historic silver medal for Georgia, the first ever medal
- 33:48for Georgia in figure skating. And then Haasa Volden wins
- 33:55bronze. And you know, Germany has had
- 33:58had had some decorated teams in the past.
- 34:01You know, we know, we know about Savchenko Musto, we know about
- 34:05Savchenko Zokoee, we know about Berto and Stoyer.
- 34:10I I know there are plenty others before that without These are my
- 34:13era. It's kind of skaters and Jose
- 34:19Volodin follow in the footsteps of these great teams and, and
- 34:25how they have an Olympic medal. And all three of these teams
- 34:28were just so happy to be on the podium.
- 34:32And obviously Mira Kihara is so happy to be Olympic champions
- 34:36and to be able to overcome the blip from the short program to
- 34:43to make it to the top of the podium.
- 34:47It was really, it was, it was funny watching the leaders share
- 34:54that I was there and and that basically every time somebody
- 35:00passed by Mira Kiara after they've they finished, they were
- 35:04sort of bowing to them like, you know, we're not worthy kind of
- 35:08bowing. All of the skaters knew how well
- 35:12they skated and that it really was one of the historic
- 35:18performances in pair skating. I I mean, I was late to this
- 35:26podcast because I had watched it three times before I came on.
- 35:33Rikumira Rishikihara, you are Trail Blazers and you will
- 35:42inspire so many people in Japan. And I've had a lot of words
- 35:49here, but I really don't have words anymore.
- 35:54It was just, it was it was a really good event.
- 35:57And let's just say, and let's just hope that the pairs have
- 36:02cleansed the arena and we have one final event left.
- 36:10And that's the women's event that starts tomorrow.
- 36:15Oh, if, if, if the women's event is anything like what we expect
- 36:25it to be and what we have expected it to be all season
- 36:29long, it's going to be really good.
- 36:31And it all starts with a short program tomorrow and then they
- 36:34have a break on Wednesday and they will finish with the free
- 36:38skate on Thursday. It's going to be a fun one.
- 36:43Let's hope. Let's cross our fingers because
- 36:47this Olympics have been, as Olympics go, a little bit weird
- 36:52and a little bit really good. And count Mira Kihara's free
- 36:58skate as one of my favorite performances of the event
- 37:06alongside Matteo Rizzo's free skate in the team event,
- 37:12alongside Gillis and Paul Poirier, free dance and the
- 37:16individual event. I hope we have more memories.
- 37:20I hope we have more great skating coming up.
- 37:24All right, well, this is Jackie Wong, chief skate nerd,
- 37:28rockerskating.com. This chief skate nerd, by the
- 37:31way, will be back on Gold Zone on Thursday on NBC Peacock in
- 37:37the US to talk about more things before the final event, the WHIP
- 37:43free skate. So stay tuned for that.
- 37:48Thanks again always to on Wilson Blade or there's support and to
- 37:54Tara Nichols for making me sound pretty decent hopefully.
- 38:02And again, the women's short program is tomorrow and let's
- 38:07get some sleep and I will talk to you again soon.
- 38:10Bye.
