- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Teba K Rambles where a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas, except we are officially out of
- 0:25season 5. Season 5 has concluded.
- 0:29We are not reviewing Korean dramas because we are officially
- 0:32in spooky season. Woo.
- 0:36So dad with me on this very first spooky season episode, Nas
- 0:42from the Swoon Diaries podcast. How are you Nas?
- 0:45I'm good. How are you, Jess?
- 0:47Good. I'm so pumped to be here and
- 0:49cover this first movie. This spooky season is going to
- 0:53be a little different from the last one that we did in 2023.
- 0:56We are going to be covering movies and it is solely because
- 1:01your girl did have no time. I had no time to sit here and
- 1:04watch another show in its entirety and cover it for spooky
- 1:10season. And I thought it was just unfair
- 1:13to not do anything at all for spooky season.
- 1:15I think it's kind of nice to cover Korean cinema.
- 1:20I go back to my roots. I did five years of movie
- 1:22podcasting with always the critics.
- 1:24I was like, let's do some K cinema, K horror, K thriller.
- 1:28And today we are starting off our spooky season 2024 with
- 1:35Train to Pusan. Yay.
- 1:40So I, I did an APB on the Insta stories to see if any creators
- 1:46were interested in jumping on and doing a guest spot for one
- 1:50of these spooky season episodes because it was kind of coming
- 1:53together really quickly and you were like, count me in for Train
- 1:56to Pusan. I was like, yes, I'll do it.
- 2:00And I was like, oh, OK, great. So like, I wrote your name down
- 2:03and I, I penciled you in immediately.
- 2:06It wasn't until a couple of days ago that you were like, OK,
- 2:10pressing play on train to Pusan, excited to watch.
- 2:15I don't know what to expect. And I was like, wait a minute,
- 2:18wait a minute, wait a minute. You'd not watched Train to Pusan
- 2:22before I, I completely had this all wrong.
- 2:26I thought that you had already seen Train to Pusan.
- 2:30Nope, Nope. You like sent me the message in
- 2:34all caps like wait, you haven't watched it?
- 2:37I was like, no, such a baby. I've never watched it before.
- 2:42I like lost it. Like I told my sister I was
- 2:44like, wait a minute, wait a minute, my friend as I watched
- 2:47Train to Pusan, like this recording is going to be crazy.
- 2:50And she was like really? Even I've watched Train to Pusan
- 2:54and she loves watching anything with subtitles.
- 2:57So I was like, I don't know what to expect here.
- 3:00Like, is she going to love it? Is she going to hate it?
- 3:01So this is going to be a very interesting start to the spooky
- 3:05season. Really.
- 3:07Really fun and interesting start if you can't hear the smile in
- 3:09our voices. We are so happy and so excited
- 3:14to be here. We're going to get started.

- 4:04Thank you guys, love you guys. All right, so we are going to
- 4:07get going on Train to Busan. IMDb synopsis reads.
- 4:12While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers
- 4:15struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.
- 4:20And that's it. That's that's all there is for
- 4:22the line to be synopsis. It's very accurate though.
- 4:26It's that's That's it. Literally it.
- 4:28Literally it. This movie was released July
- 4:3120th in 2016. It is summer blockbuster.
- 4:36It's an hour and 58 minutes long, basically two hours.
- 4:39It's directed by Yon Sangho, and this is actually their
- 4:43director's first live action film.
- 4:46Before this he was doing just animated features.
- 4:49Oh wow. Yeah, and if you look at his
- 4:52filmography since he's done some things you might recognize, like
- 4:56Hellbound from 2021. That's a six episode K drama.
- 5:01Jung, I can't remember how you pronounce that but I watched
- 5:05this movie from 2023 as well. It's kind of like a sci-fi
- 5:09dystopian future. And then Parasite the Grey from
- 5:15this year 2024. It's also a six episode K drama.
- 5:19He also wrote the screenplay for Train to Busan and his cool
- 5:24screenwriter was Pak Jusuk Who I also wrote Hua Yi a Monster Boy
- 5:29and Project Silence. I have always wanted to watch
- 5:33Hua Yi a Monster Boy and when I looked up the cast for Project
- 5:37Silence I was like Yep I totally want to watch Project Silence as
- 5:40well. So two other movies that look
- 5:43really good and really promising.
- 5:45This movie stars, I don't know, some little known actor named
- 5:51Kung Yu. He plays the main characters so
- 5:54cool. We have Ma Dong Sok as well.
- 5:59He plays Sang Hua. He is married to the character
- 6:04Song Kyung, who's played by Jung Yumi.
- 6:08We've got Kim SU Wan, we've got Che Wushi.
- 6:12And this is, this is like it's shaping up, right?
- 6:15Yes. Kim We Song plays like this
- 6:19Ajishi character on the basically a villain guy on the
- 6:26train so he plays Jinhi and then a couple of Halmoniz, Ye SU Jung
- 6:33and Pak Myeongchen as well. This is a very well liked, well
- 6:39regarded cast. They've been in K dramas left
- 6:42and right, other Korean movies as well.
- 6:45What did you think of this cast? I so going into the movie, I
- 6:50literally only knew that Gong Yu was in it.
- 6:52Oh really? But then I start the movie and
- 6:54I'm like, whoa, I know all these people.
- 6:56So I was like, oh, this is amazing.
- 6:59Like especially Che Wu Chic. I did not know he was in the
- 7:01movie. I didn't know Jung Yu Yu was in
- 7:03this movie. Like I saw all these familiar
- 7:05faces and I was like, Oh my gosh, like these are my people.
- 7:09So I was really excited to see like how they were all the kind
- 7:12of going to interact like throughout the film.
- 7:16So do you like zombie movies is my first question.
- 7:20No. I don't like zombie anything.
- 7:25Like I like I said in the beginning, I'm such a baby.
- 7:27Like I'm so scared of everything.
- 7:28Like I don't usually watch like anything like horror zombies,
- 7:32like nothing. But I was like, I really want to
- 7:35watch Train to Busan because I feel like it's like a rite of
- 7:37passage. Like you have to watch Train to
- 7:38Busan. So I was like, Oh my gosh, this
- 7:40will be a great opportunity to watch it, which is why I wanted
- 7:42to. And I was like, I just got to
- 7:43put my big girl pants on and get through the movies.
- 7:50Yeah, this movie did incredibly well.
- 7:53I think it made 90 on a budget of 10 billion won, which is
- 8:00about $7.5 million. And I don't know if you anything
- 8:05know anything about movies. This is nothing.
- 8:07Yeah. This is a budget of nothing.
- 8:10Yeah, that was way lower than what I was expecting when you
- 8:12said it. I was like, wait, wow.
- 8:15And it ended up grossing $92 million worldwide.
- 8:20That's amazing. It is was a runaway hit.
- 8:23I think it's in the top ten highest grossing films in South
- 8:27Korea. Certified fresh on Rotten
- 8:29Tomatoes, like 90 something percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 8:33I can't remember what it is. That just means that 90
- 8:35something percent of verified critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave
- 8:41it a positive review. Amazing, yeah.
- 8:44It is incredibly well regarded. You don't like zombie movies?
- 8:53Had you seen any of, you know, forget the Korean zombie media?
- 8:59Yeah, had you seen other zombie movies pre 2016?
- 9:03No, like I've never watched any zombie movie.
- 9:05I've never watched Walking Dead. Like I stayed far away from
- 9:08those. Things.
- 9:09Oh my God. OK OK, so I'm going to give you
- 9:15like a really quick crash course in zombies really fast.
- 9:19I'm talking like 2 minutes. OK so zombies have always
- 9:23existed in folklore. The word zombie comes from the
- 9:27West African word zombie, which means spirit of a dead person,
- 9:32and the Haitian Creole word zombie, which means a dead
- 9:35person that's been reanimated by magical means.
- 9:38So. Yes.
- 9:40So it has been around in folklore and different cultural
- 9:44traditions, and then it's been around in books, literature and
- 9:51in movies as well. Movies have been around for a
- 9:54little over 100 years. Like films in general.
- 9:58Right. But the modern zombie basically
- 10:02started in 1968 with Night of the Living Dead by George A
- 10:07Romero. George A Romero directed and
- 10:11wrote Night of the Living Dead and went on to basically make a
- 10:13career out of making zombie movies and doing sequels and
- 10:17different things like that to Night of the Living Dead.
- 10:20And Night of the Living Dead is black and white, even though
- 10:25they had color film by that point.
- 10:29That movie terrified people. People had never seen something
- 10:33like that before. Yeah, I would imagine so.
- 10:36Yeah, and George A Romero set up a lot of tropes that we see in
- 10:41zombie movies, zombie media, and we see them subverted a lot in
- 10:47zombie movies and zombie media. So train to Pusan knowing like a
- 10:51quick primer on zombies. Yeah.
- 10:55For George A Romero, the zombies were always slow.
- 10:59They were slow moving. They ate brains.
- 11:02They were mindless. Since then, the zombies have
- 11:06evolved from different creators. They have become faster.
- 11:10Some zombies speak and have a mind of their own.
- 11:13Some zombies are capable of love and coming back to their human
- 11:17selves. Some zombies are not created
- 11:20from rising back up from the dead through supernatural means.
- 11:26They are created from aliens, created from biotech disasters,
- 11:32as in trying to push on, created from human intervention, created
- 11:38from disease and plagues. And they don't just eat brains
- 11:43anymore, they just love to eat human flesh.
- 11:48I think that, how do I put it, Chante Pusan doesn't do anything
- 11:53necessarily new that's outside of the genre, right?
- 11:57But it's still amazing. Yeah, I agree.
- 12:03So tell me your thoughts, like how did you feel watching this
- 12:07movie coming without like you're blind, you don't know anything
- 12:12about zombies at all. Right.
- 12:15I going into it, I was just like bracing myself for like, OK,
- 12:21like one of the zombies coming. And then when it started
- 12:24happening, I was like, OK. And I have to say that I'm a
- 12:28person that like I, I'm my tolerance for scary things would
- 12:32think it's very low, like it's on the ground.
- 12:34But like I watched this movie, yes, there were seeds and I was
- 12:37like, oh, it's a little disturbing or a little like that
- 12:40was that was interesting. But like I slept very well
- 12:43afterwards. Like I was, I was fine.
- 12:46But even though, like, the movie is very thrilling and you're
- 12:49like, oh, my gosh, what's going to happen?
- 12:51I just thought it was so well done because you're not only
- 12:53seeing them like, you know, run away from the zombies and trying
- 12:55to survive, but you're also seeing kind of human nature and
- 12:59like, what people are willing to do to survive.
- 13:02It's like some people take like this more selfish route.
- 13:04Some people are like, we're selfless.
- 13:06Some people started off selfish and then they become selfless by
- 13:09the end. So it's, like, really
- 13:11interesting to see, like, human behavior in that way as they
- 13:15dealt with this complete catastrophe on the train.
- 13:19So, yeah, I thought it was really, really fascinating.
- 13:22And just like, so well done because it was so layered.
- 13:24It just wasn't like a horror film.
- 13:25There was so much more to it. And the acting was so good.
- 13:30I know. And Gong, you looked amazing.
- 13:33Yeah, he looked amazing in this movie.
- 13:36Like the first scene. I was just like, wow.
- 13:39Like this is 2016 Gong? He.
- 13:42Looked so good. Yep, this is the same year that
- 13:47Goblin came out. Yes, I want to say like 2016 was
- 13:50a great year. I see.
- 13:51It was just a general for movies, dramas, like things were
- 13:56going really great, so. I'm really great.
- 14:00I rewatched Train to Pusan and I was trying to pinpoint why I
- 14:04love it so much and why it's so well received even though it's
- 14:10not doing anything new necessarily in the genre.
- 14:13And I think it has everything to do with sort of its Korean
- 14:16sensibility and how it is focusing a lot on heart.
- 14:21It has so much heart. Besides all the exciting and
- 14:26captivating moments and thrilling action horror that the
- 14:32movie has, it is compelling because of the characters that
- 14:36you care so deeply for. Yes, this train crew, you're
- 14:41like, none of these people can die.
- 14:43Like I cannot stand it if any one of these people dies.
- 14:46Yeah, you get so attached to them in such a short amount of
- 14:49time, and when you see things start happening, you're just
- 14:52like, oh, no, oh, no, oh, it's just another one and another
- 14:56one. And it's devastating.
- 14:57And I didn't think that I would be devastated in a movie like
- 15:00this. I wasn't expecting it.
- 15:01It is devastating. Oh my God, yeah.
- 15:05I think that it leaves you emotionally drained, yes.
- 15:10I think horror really works when it's being done to someone you
- 15:13care about. And what's cool about some of
- 15:18these characters is that besides some of them being straight,
- 15:22like they're quote UN quote good characters, Konyo is not
- 15:27necessarily a good character. Right, Right.
- 15:30He's very morally Gray, yes. And he's not a good father,
- 15:34really. Right.
- 15:37You know he's working through it.
- 15:38And sure, the protection aspect is almost like baseline.
- 15:42Every parent should protect their child.
- 15:45Right. But like, he's not doing the
- 15:47day-to-day, being present, being an active listener, caring for
- 15:53his child's emotional needs. And that is a huge part of this
- 16:00very nuanced and interesting father daughter dynamic that you
- 16:05see throughout the movie. That is the emotional touch
- 16:09point. That's what makes you cry at the
- 16:12end of the. Movie, yes, yes, exactly.
- 16:15If you put that so well. But yeah, I totally agree.
- 16:19So it's thrilling, it feels fresh, and it's almost like if
- 16:25you're gonna do something, do it well.
- 16:27Yes, exactly, exactly. And it does everything
- 16:31particularly well. Yeah, it managed to just have so
- 16:34much depth and I was like, I understand why this movie is so
- 16:38popular and like well loved and well regarded, especially in the
- 16:41realm of like zombie movies, because I feel like it's so much
- 16:44more than that it. Is, and that's the thing, right,
- 16:46is that I feel like a lot of Korean media that we are so
- 16:50entrenched in and we're so familiar with, they are tapping
- 16:55into emotions, relationships. And that's what this movie does
- 17:01incredibly well, and it does it within two hours.
- 17:08It packed so much in it packed. A lot in.
- 17:12Yeah, yeah. Wow.
- 17:13OK, there's. A lot of tenderness between the
- 17:16characters. Yes.
- 17:18I think this movie does well. A lot of zombie movies, most
- 17:22zombie movies do this as well, is that they comment on things
- 17:26through the lens of zombies or using zombies as a metaphor.
- 17:32And in this case, the movie comments suddenly on class
- 17:35warfare. You know, you have characters
- 17:40who, and we're familiar with this too, like being so familiar
- 17:44with Korean media, Korean entertainment, and getting a
- 17:48huge dose of Korean culture through that.
- 17:51The Korean hierarchy, how people with better jobs, better
- 17:55positions, people who make more money get more say in how things
- 18:00are are done, how important matters are handled.
- 18:05People with less power are relegated to lesser positions,
- 18:11are silenced in high stress situations, in situations where
- 18:17maybe they're in our society. That's not necessarily how it
- 18:21is. Like when you watch zombie media
- 18:24over here, the class warfare thing doesn't come up very
- 18:29often. Right, right.
- 18:31Right, right. It's more like every person has
- 18:34an equal say. Exactly.
- 18:36When you watch Train to Pusan, it's very clear that certain
- 18:41characters are given a lot bigger of a voice.
- 18:46And so you have this like subtle class warfare going.
- 18:49Many concepts double as opportunities to comment on the
- 18:53government's inability to handle this situation.
- 18:58Yeah, yeah. And what sucks is like four
- 19:01years later, we go through a pandemic.
- 19:03Right. Zombie movies and Contagion
- 19:06movies, like the movie Contagion itself was like, that's very
- 19:08triggering. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:10Because it's handled kind of better in contagion than it was
- 19:15in real life. Why couldn't we have done that?
- 19:21When you see the broadcasts in Train to Busan of like, trust
- 19:26your government, don't worry, there's nothing to panic, stay
- 19:30in place, yada yada. And then it is juxtaposed
- 19:34against what is actually happening outside.
- 19:38That makes the government look terrible, right?
- 19:41Doesn't it make the government look inadequate at handling this
- 19:46situation? Like they're not going to take
- 19:48care of you. No one is going to save you.
- 19:51It's commenting a lot on things zombies themselves have always.
- 19:56You know, ever since George A Romero put his hands on zombies,
- 20:00they have been a vehicle for commenting on social issues like
- 20:05racism. 1968, right? Like if you think of what was
- 20:08happening in the States in 1968, you're immediately like, Oh
- 20:12yeah, like zombies and, and people that are other zombies
- 20:17can be seen as being. Dehumanizing because they're
- 20:21just animalistic. They're just based on instinct.
- 20:26They preys on our fears of the apocalypse, of everything that
- 20:32we've built being abandoned and destroyed.
- 20:35If preys on like indifference, where zombies have no feelings
- 20:40whatsoever, no, no anxiety, no happiness, no No Fear.
- 20:44They just, they just are. They're indifferent to your
- 20:48screams of pain and terror. You know, mass contagion, which
- 20:54again, our fears of mass contagion now, the way we look
- 20:58at trains, Pusana and fears of mass contagion now in 2024 is
- 21:03way different than how we saw it in 2016, I'm afraid.
- 21:07Right, right. Because.
- 21:08But yeah, living through a pandemic will give you a
- 21:11different perspective for sure. Exactly.
- 21:14But zombies, you know that you can imprint whatever you kind of
- 21:21want onto them because they can represent a lot of things.
- 21:27I really like the zombie sub genre of horror and they are
- 21:34still terrifying to me. I'm a I'm a huge fan of zombie
- 21:38movies and media. I have not watched everything.
- 21:42There is no way that I can watch everything.
- 21:44There is so many things even like B&C level movies that like
- 21:49I've don't even know. I don't know what I don't know,
- 21:51but there's a lot of media out there that I have watched and I
- 21:56eat it up every time it's. Not eating up every time.
- 22:01But yeah, I really appreciate Train to Pusan for what it does,
- 22:06the cast that it assembled, the way that it looks, the
- 22:09cinematography of it. I think it's done incredibly
- 22:14well. So I'm glad that you enjoyed it
- 22:17and that you were able to sleep well afterwards.
- 22:19Yes, I was. I got through it and I yeah, it
- 22:23was, it was a great experience. I'm really proud of myself.
- 22:26Are you willing to watch other zombie movies out of Korea?
- 22:31Movies I I don't know, I have to take it one step at a time.
- 22:36I think I would probably maybe start with a show like I really
- 22:39want to watch, like Happiness or something like that.
- 22:41Like I want to try that, OK or like Kingdom and see if I can
- 22:45like get through it. OK, I'd watch Happy.
- 22:47OK, so let's take this slow. I would recommend for you.
- 22:52I would recommend Happiness first, OK?
- 22:55It will scare you. Yeah.
- 22:57But it does have this central friends to lovers couple.
- 23:02Yeah, that is very strong. I love Han Hyo juice.
- 23:05She's like my girl crush forever.
- 23:07And another member of the Luga squad in it.
- 23:11Pakyung Sheikh. Yes, Pakyung Sheikh.
- 23:14It's very good. I love that show.
- 23:17Kingdom is going to scare the shit out of you.
- 23:20OK, so I won't go. I won't.
- 23:23Watch that. Yeah, just being honest.
- 23:25I don't know if you can handle Cape Town.
- 23:27You said just being honest. It's amazing.
- 23:31It is amazing. Basically prestige television.
- 23:36Wow. Highly recommend Kingdom, but
- 23:41it's going to scare the shit out of you if you if you got through
- 23:45change to Brusan and you're kind of like you're kind of like
- 23:47this, like shaking a little bit. Still, yeah, I wouldn't go with.
- 23:51Kingdom. OK, so no Kingdom.
- 23:54Or all of us are dead. All of us are dead.
- 23:58It's very good, but I think it might be also a little more high
- 24:02stress than happiness. It's less stress than Kingdom
- 24:07maybe. Somewhere in the middle.
- 24:09Somewhere in the middle more more on the side of Kingdom,
- 24:13but. Yeah, OK.
- 24:15That's a good crash course. I'll start with happiness.
- 24:18You know, if you wanna watch a zombie movie, a Korean zombie
- 24:22movie, I would actually recommend The Odd Family AKA
- 24:26Zombie for Zombie for sale. It's a horror comedy.
- 24:31OK. So it's not like it's not
- 24:33leading into the terror aspect of things too much.
- 24:36Oh, no. It's scary, but it's not gonna.
- 24:38It's funny. Like, have you seen maybe Shawn
- 24:41of the Dead? Have you seen?
- 24:42I haven't seen Shawn of the Dead.
- 24:44So horror comedy might be a good Ave. for you to dip your toes
- 24:49into like that aesthetic. You're going to get those scary
- 24:52looking zombies, but it's funny. It's a dark comedy.
- 24:56OK, OK. I think I could stomach.
- 24:58That and then when you the next level would probably be like
- 25:03hashtag alive with UI in who's like a trapped gamer, like the
- 25:09apocalypse, those zombie apocalypse happens and he's in
- 25:11his apartment just gaming. Oh wow, he's.
- 25:14Like a He's almost like a recluse and he can't leave now.
- 25:18He can't leave his apartment. Yikes.
- 25:21It's good. It's really good.
- 25:22That's a really good one. I think after that you can maybe
- 25:26watch Rampant, which is historical with Hilben.
- 25:30OK, he's fighting zombies in like the Jolson era.
- 25:34I can't remember what era it is. Oh wow, the.
- 25:36Jolson era. No, it's amazing.
- 25:38It's really good. The last one.
- 25:40I don't think you'll ever get to this level.
- 25:43It's the whaling. That sounds terrifying.
- 25:46Like I feel like any horror movie that starts with the
- 25:49anything, I feel like it's always just like, no thank you.
- 25:53OK, so I watched the whaling several months ago, I think
- 25:56towards the beginning of the year.
- 25:58And I'll tell you something about myself.
- 26:01I get really brave, like 1-2 in the morning and I thought the.
- 26:08Middle of the night too. Middle of the night I thought
- 26:12I'm going to finally watch the whaling, which I heard is one of
- 26:15the best scary thriller horror movies out of Korea.
- 26:21And I start, I press play on the whaling and I was because I
- 26:31don't like watching things that are almost like spiritual in
- 26:35nature. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:37And the ending of the whaling, it's like zombies but make a
- 26:43spiritual slash ghosty and it was very disturbing.
- 26:49It is a disturbing movie. Yes, and that's what I don't
- 26:54like about it. Like, just things that I find,
- 26:56yeah, disturbing, like. Disturbing like my spirit.
- 26:59Yeah, you know what I'm saying? There's a difference, yeah.
- 27:01Like I couldn't sleep well the next couple of nights.
- 27:04I was very distraught after watching the whaling.
- 27:09And I mean, if that's your cup of tea, definitely watch the
- 27:11whaling. I thought it was excellent.
- 27:13Like from a technical aspect, it's written amazing.
- 27:16The acting was excellent. It's so atmospheric and all
- 27:20these things. But then the actual experience
- 27:24of watching it, I was like, I can't do that two times in a
- 27:27row. And I put I put the whaling on
- 27:30the pole, the Patreon pole of what I should cover for the
- 27:34spooky season this year. And I was like, I hope to God
- 27:38nobody chooses it. I think I got like a few votes
- 27:40on it, but nowhere near as many as like Train to Pusad and like
- 27:44some of these other ones. And I said thank God because
- 27:47what the hell was I thinking? Like putting that on there and
- 27:51saying I was going to watch it again and cover it because the
- 27:55first time nearly took me clean out.
- 27:56Yeah, and you watch in the middle of the night.
- 27:58And I watch in the middle of the night like, yeah, it was bad.
- 28:02It's one thing for things to be like visually scary, but like
- 28:06when stuff is like disturbing to the point you feel like
- 28:08unsettled and just like ooh, like it's I hate that feeling,
- 28:12which is why I don't do scary things.
- 28:14So I don't like to be disturbed, but trans to Busan wasn't
- 28:17disturbing to me. Yes, yes.
- 28:19So with that being said, I'll say some fun facts before we
- 28:24give our scores and go into the spoiler section to talk a little
- 28:28bit more at length about specifically what happens in the
- 28:32movie and some of our favorite parts and sequences.
- 28:35So yes, fun facts, Soul Station, I don't know if you've heard
- 28:39this of this movie, Soul Station is an animated feature length
- 28:43zombie movie that serves as a prequel to the live action
- 28:46horror hit Train to Pusan. So the director, as I said, has
- 28:51a history of doing animated feature length films.
- 28:54And so he did Soul Station basically almost exactly at the
- 28:58same time as Train to Pusan, and it serves as a prequel.
- 29:01So if you want to, you can watch Soul Station.
- 29:04It's animated. Then watch Train to Busan.
- 29:07Then watch Peninsula from 2020, which is the sequel to Train to
- 29:13Busan. It takes place four years after
- 29:15the events of Train to Busan. And that one is like a heist
- 29:18movie. Yeah, I watched Peninsula and it
- 29:25was one of the 1st movies I watched back in theaters during
- 29:28the pandemic. OK, it's OK, it's fine.
- 29:32It does. It just doesn't have the heart
- 29:35of the original movie, which is I think a lot of people were
- 29:39expecting that same feeling. But you don't get it.
- 29:43With Peninsula, it's a lot more standard.
- 29:46Whatever. Sohi, who plays Shanee, is an ex
- 29:50member of the famous K pop group Wonder Girls.
- 29:53So when she pops up on screen, the Korean audience is like, Oh
- 29:57my God, it's a Wonder Girl. It's a wonderful.
- 30:01But even when she came on the screen, I was just like, she's
- 30:02deaf. She has to be like in some sort
- 30:04of group or something. Like I just knew it.
- 30:06Yeah. You just know sometimes that
- 30:07like the way that they they allow the character to enter the
- 30:10scene that they were. There's somebody that you should
- 30:13know. Yeah, this is not the first
- 30:17Zombies on a Train film. Horror Express from 1972,
- 30:20tackled a similar subject, albeit less frenetically.
- 30:24Is what IMDb said. This is the last thing I'll say.
- 30:28There is somewhere out there an American remake of Train to
- 30:31Busan called The Last Train to New York was supposed to release
- 30:37in 2023. We are still waiting.
- 30:40Not sure anyone is really expecting much from that.
- 30:42Perhaps it'll never get a release date.
- 30:45I don't know if that's going to be any good at all.
- 30:49I don't know if it's going to have the same like impact, I
- 30:53don't know. Not everything used to be
- 30:54remade. Yeah, I don't have high hopes
- 30:56for for that at all. At all.
- 30:59What would you give Chain to Pusan out of five Soulja?
- 31:03Bottles I give a 5 out of five. I really enjoyed it.
- 31:07It's I think it's excellent like again, it's not my usual choice
- 31:12of of you know, film, but it is very well executed, very well
- 31:17acted. The story is solid everything
- 31:19made sense. It has a lot of heart to to it
- 31:22and over a short amount of time you really do fall in love with
- 31:25these characters and you're just seeing human nature just play
- 31:28itself out. And I thought it was fascinating
- 31:31and very well done. I have no complaints.
- 31:34It was great. I agree completely.
- 31:37I would give this maybe 4 1/2 out of five Soulja bottles just
- 31:43to be a little fresh with it. Just to be a little.
- 31:47Fresh, you know, just to be different.
- 31:50But I love this movie. I watch, I rewatch it at least
- 31:55once a year, especially during this season.
- 31:58It still holds up. It's great.
- 32:00It's very well done. It's very well done.
- 32:02I love that you watch it once a year.
- 32:04I do, I basically watch it once a year.
- 32:06I don't know why I don't have it on Blu-ray, but I.
- 32:08Definitely you should. At this point you should.
- 32:10I'm a I'm a physical media person.
- 32:12So anyway, we are going to talk more about Trent Pusan right
- 32:17after this greatest trick. Houston, we have a problem.
- 32:22I am the father. I see dead people, the devil.
- 32:26Ever. Pulled.
- 32:27Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
- 32:30Was convincing the world. You.
- 32:32Can't handle the truth? He didn't.
- 32:34Exist now what's in the box? All right, we're on the other
- 32:40side of spoilers. You have just heard the old
- 32:43Always the Critics spoiler bumper.
- 32:45I wanted to bring it back for the spooky season.
- 32:48It is one of my favorite things that we used to have for the
- 32:51Always the Critic movie podcast. And I thought it was really
- 32:54fitting because it's kind of like dark and seedy.
- 32:57And I don't know, it gets a little bit of Hans Zimmer in
- 33:00there. I wanted to start at the very
- 33:02beginning because we get this shot of like this guy running
- 33:07over a deer and the deer just like up and walks away like.
- 33:12The deer, I was like, oh Yikes. Oh Yikes.
- 33:16But we get this idea already that there is a leak in the
- 33:21biotech district. This is a man made disease, a
- 33:26man made pandemic. Kong Yu is a fund manager and he
- 33:33tells his subordinate to, like, sell all related stock,
- 33:37presumably of this biotech company.
- 33:41He's looking at headlines of mysterious fish deaths and Chin
- 33:44Yang reservoir. And it's all ends up being
- 33:48connected, like he has a very small hand in this zombie
- 33:54outbreak. How did you feel about that
- 33:57small aspect or depending on how you look at it, large aspect of
- 34:01the movie that he is to blame? Yeah, I was like, oh, well, that
- 34:05complicates things. Sounds like, Yikes.
- 34:08That's not good because that's a lot of, you know, I guess, like
- 34:13harm and devastation that you're responsible for.
- 34:15Like you've literally caused this countrywide issue.
- 34:19Yeah, on top of this, he's a bad dad because he comes, he's
- 34:23fighting with his ex-wife over the phone.
- 34:26He doesn't want to send her to Pusan for her birthday.
- 34:29He doesn't have a present picked out already for her birthday,
- 34:32which is the next day. And he ends up just getting he's
- 34:35asking like his assistant, hey, what do kids like these days?
- 34:39Like he does not know his child. He gets her a Wii gaming console
- 34:44and the moment when she looks up and there's already they cut 2
- 34:49and there's already a Wii gaming console in her room and she just
- 34:55says quietly like for children's day, like you got me the.
- 34:59Yeah. Devastating.
- 35:02I know. Devastating.
- 35:03Like the way that they both looked up slowly and the camera
- 35:06just panned, I was like, this is such a brilliant scene.
- 35:09It's just like. Exactly.
- 35:12It's bad that she doesn't want anything else for her birthday,
- 35:16she just wants to see her mom and Pusan.
- 35:18She doesn't want to bother Kong you since he's busy insisting
- 35:22that she can just take the train by herself.
- 35:25Can you imagine this little girl taking the train by herself
- 35:29while the zombie outbreak is happening?
- 35:32Like she would have just gone in the 1st.
- 35:34Place. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:36Disastrous. I was like, why was that even an
- 35:38option? I know he doesn't attend her
- 35:41recital. His mother had recorded it on on
- 35:45this old like camcorder. And he watches her do this song
- 35:51and she doesn't finish singing this song.
- 35:54And later in the morning, he's taking her to the train to go
- 35:58visit her mom. He's going to do it despite
- 36:01being super busy at work. And he tells her, like, whatever
- 36:05you do, you must finish what you start trying to instill these
- 36:08like little lessons without having He's trying to be like
- 36:12finish what you start but not understanding like where, why
- 36:15she didn't finish exactly. Exactly.
- 36:19Would you find out later why she didn't finish?
- 36:24Anyway, we'll get to that. We'll get to that.
- 36:27What did you think of some of these some of these beats?
- 36:30Because I just think it's kind of masterful how they set up the
- 36:33story and how they set up the characters and how in the first
- 36:37act you like meet all of the players, you meet all of the
- 36:40train people, they board the train.
- 36:43Zombie one enters the train and you meet Madung Sook and his
- 36:47pregnant wife and all all these people.
- 36:50You see the the baseball team and Chaoshik and like the girl,
- 36:54the the Wonder Girl coming on the train and like all of this
- 36:58stuff. And you're like, you're
- 37:00instantly because people are just living their lives.
- 37:02Yeah, yeah. It was just so interesting
- 37:05because you're like, everybody's coming from like, different
- 37:07walks of life and like everyone's just minding their
- 37:09business. Like, you know, he's taking his
- 37:11daughter to go see his mom. Like the baseball team was like
- 37:14coming from a game or going to a game.
- 37:16And like, you know, we have like, the businessmen and we
- 37:18have the homies and we have the husband and wife and like, you
- 37:22know, and the homeless man and like, everyone's just trying to
- 37:25get by and just trying to go about their day.
- 37:27And then, like, the first zombie gets on and I'm like, oh, no,
- 37:30this girl. Because it was, I think it was,
- 37:32yeah, it was a girl. And she was like in pain and she
- 37:35was struggling. And I'm like, oh, no, oh, no.
- 37:37And like, no one knows that she slipped off the train.
- 37:40And then, like, all hell breaks loose.
- 37:42And it was just just the way that it was filmed, just like
- 37:46how easily it spread like wildfire in that first wave.
- 37:49Like from that first bite, from that first girl that was
- 37:52infected, I was just like, oh, it just happened so fast.
- 37:57It just, it progressed so fast. Yeah.
- 37:59And that was probably like the scariest part part of the movie
- 38:02for me because it was just kind of like, ill like, you know,
- 38:06everyone's biting each other and people are like rising on the
- 38:09ground and their bodies are contorting.
- 38:11And I'm like, ah, but it wasn't that bad after after that.
- 38:17But it was like pure chaos. And you're just seeing all these
- 38:20people just kind of look around and they're like freaking out.
- 38:23And I'm thinking, what would I do if I was like on a train,
- 38:26like minding my business? Yeah.
- 38:28And all of a sudden, I'm seeing these zombies just like emerge
- 38:31out of nowhere. It's like, what do you, what do
- 38:33you do? I know.
- 38:34Yeah. And you could feel the terror
- 38:36from like, the passengers or just what the heck is going on?
- 38:39Like, yeah, it was a it was a really great start to the movie.
- 38:43Yeah, it's so energetic and there's so much movement in
- 38:47there and the way that they shoot it is just impressive.
- 38:51I think because it's the bulk of the movie is in a confined
- 38:56space. You're on a moving locomotive
- 38:59and I adore that they set it on a train, on a high speed train.
- 39:05There's something about trains that I just love.
- 39:08Like, that to me is trains are very romantic to me.
- 39:12They're from a bygone era. I feel like people are more
- 39:16comfortable. How do I put this?
- 39:19Trains are some of the oldest forms of transportation that we
- 39:22have. They're very reliable.
- 39:25Yeah. There's something also, like,
- 39:27very Hitchcockian about it. Like, I don't know if you've
- 39:30watched some Hitchcock movies, but like a lot of Hitchcock
- 39:33movies and especially early Hitchcock, he would set his
- 39:36stuff on a train. There would always be a train in
- 39:38the movie. The people would get on a train
- 39:40or something would happen on a train.
- 39:43And I love that. It's very like the lady vanishes
- 39:47on a train and what are they? What are you going to do about
- 39:49it? Because you have nowhere to go,
- 39:52right? I just think it is.
- 39:55It gives it such momentum automatically that.
- 40:00They're stuck on the train with zombies.
- 40:02Yeah. And it like raises the stakes as
- 40:04well because they're like, they're literally just stuck
- 40:06there. Yeah.
- 40:07And so there's nowhere for them to go, and they just have to
- 40:09fight their hardest to survive. So yeah, I loved the fact that
- 40:13because I was wondering when I started the movie, I was like, I
- 40:15think they're really going to be on the train, like the whole
- 40:16time. Like, how is this going to go?
- 40:18I think they did it so, so well because you could feel like the
- 40:21fear or the stress, the, you know, the fact that they're
- 40:24confined, you feel all of that. Yeah.
- 40:26As you're watching it. So yeah, it was a great choice.
- 40:29It's a great choice, the concept that you're even though you're
- 40:33in a confined space and you wanna get off, you can't get off
- 40:36exactly because nowhere is safe. The stations are not safe.
- 40:40You can't let more zombies on. You can't let infected people
- 40:43get on. Yeah, Yeah, I adored that.
- 40:46I thought that was part of the brilliance of the movie was that
- 40:48they just set the whole thing, most of it on the train.
- 40:52And then they had different types of shots.
- 40:53In the movie, they strap a camera in front of a zombie and
- 40:57like have the camera facing the zombie and have this like awful
- 41:00perspective of looking straight at the zombie as it's yes, yes,
- 41:04moving about and stuff. And.
- 41:06Yeah. You haven't watched a lot of
- 41:08zombie stuff, but the fact that the zombies are moving very
- 41:12fast, that goes against like the original 1968 Georgia Romero
- 41:17trope of them moving very slow. Yeah.
- 41:19But that's what I thought too, was interesting because I did
- 41:22notice in this movie that they were really fast.
- 41:24Yeah. Because like my sister, she
- 41:26loves The Walking Dead. At least she loved it until
- 41:29apparently the show got bad. But.
- 41:31OK so I stopped watching The Walking Dead when they killed
- 41:34Glenn. Yeah, that's when she stopped
- 41:36watching too. Yeah.
- 41:36So yeah, yeah. And she and she was saying how
- 41:40slow they are. So she was saying like, it's
- 41:42very easy to like run away from them.
- 41:43True. You know, you it's like, yes,
- 41:45they're scary, but like you can easily kind of manipulate them
- 41:47because they're so slow. So in this one, it was really
- 41:50interesting to see like they would, they could Sprint.
- 41:53They are. Sprinting, yeah.
- 41:56And the speed at which they turn as well is something else.
- 42:01Like some zombie movies. It takes a few hours or whatever
- 42:05for it to happen. I think that this isn't new
- 42:09though. Like this isn't something that
- 42:10Transpo sound like just came up with.
- 42:12We had already seen like fast zombies before in I believe we'd
- 42:17already seen it in World War Z, But the first person to do fast
- 42:21zombies I think was Dawn of the Dead from 2004.
- 42:26So that's a remake of a George A Romero, Dawn of the Dead and
- 42:32Zack Snyder, like the Zack Snyder directed that one and he
- 42:37was like, I'm going to make my zombies fast.
- 42:39So now everyone was like, Oh my God, we got to make our zombies
- 42:43fast because otherwise it makes no sense.
- 42:45So 2004, the fast zombies hit World War Z.
- 42:50You had the quick turn. You had mere seconds before
- 42:55somebody who was infected turned into a zombie.
- 42:59I love the look of the zombies in this movie as well.
- 43:01Like they kind of gave like a film.
- 43:03They put a film over their eyes as well, so look like they kind
- 43:07of had cataracts all of a sudden.
- 43:10I love that they would pile on top of each other.
- 43:12That's something that we've seen before as well.
- 43:15But when they're piling on top of each other and mass, I feel
- 43:17like that always works. It's always terrifying.
- 43:19It's so. Terrifying.
- 43:20Yeah. The violence of their movements.
- 43:23You had like contortionist moves and stuff like that.
- 43:27That's all terrifying. The sound design of them and the
- 43:32crackling noises and the different thing.
- 43:35Like you're just like, Oh my God, it is awful, terrible.
- 43:39It's terrible, Terrible exactly. But I thought it was all really
- 43:46well done. Like if you're gonna do the same
- 43:47thing as other people, like, do it well.
- 43:48And they did it well. Right.
- 43:50They did. They did a great job.
- 43:52It wasn't like it didn't feel, you know how sometimes you can
- 43:54watch something scary and you're like, OK, like it just feels
- 43:57very campy and just over the top.
- 43:59It was genuinely oh, like I feel like I'm on this train.
- 44:02Like it just felt very real. It felt very real.
- 44:05I think they did a good job with that.
- 44:07Exactly. Exactly.
- 44:08So you like that first outbreak where it goes, it just runs
- 44:12through the trains? Yes, yes.
- 44:14Because I feel like I set up the story just like, OK, now we're
- 44:17getting started. And it didn't take too long.
- 44:19I was like, OK, all right, now things are happening.
- 44:23The homeless man they give you like a first fake out.
- 44:27Yes. Where the first zombie one
- 44:30boards the train and she goes into a bathroom.
- 44:33The Ajashi businessman, first of all, fuck that guy.
- 44:37But anyway, he was so awful, that guy.
- 44:41The stuff that he does later in the movie, the first thing that
- 44:45he does is he notices that someone has boarded the train,
- 44:49and you think he's talking about Zombie One?
- 44:52Yeah. He pulls aside one of the
- 44:54attendants and he's like, somebody's on this train, you
- 44:57got to get him out, yadda yadda, and he's snitching.
- 45:00They go to the bathroom. They open the bathroom.
- 45:02You think it's zombie one? It's not.
- 45:04It's the homeless guy. Right.
- 45:06Who's traumatized saying over and over, like everyone's dead.
- 45:10Everyone's dead and shaking and like all this stuff completely,
- 45:13completely out of it. This asshole says to the little
- 45:18girl who's the best little girl in in, Oh my God, like ever.
- 45:22I love her. She's perfect.
- 45:25She was amazing in this role. She did a great job.
- 45:27This guy says, hey, kid, if you don't study in school, you'll
- 45:31end up like him. So disgusting.
- 45:33And she turns to him and says, my mom says whoever says that is
- 45:37a bad person, which we know how much Korean society values
- 45:43education and getting ahead, doing well in school and all
- 45:49this stuff. The fact that her mom is even
- 45:52like, whoever's saying all this stuff, this cliche nonsense
- 45:58about like, you better do well in school or else you're going
- 46:01to be homeless or else you're going to do that.
- 46:03You're going to be on the streets or whatever.
- 46:06They're a bad person. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:08So I feel like the mom is already in the audience's good
- 46:11graces even though we never see her in the movie.
- 46:13Even though we never meet her, never meet her, we get a glimpse
- 46:16of like the type of person that she is.
- 46:17Like we don't do that class of stuff.
- 46:19We don't think we're better than other people.
- 46:21We don't do that. Exactly, he says.
- 46:24She must have flunked. What a terrible man.
- 46:26Automatically you're like fuck that guy, I hope he dies.
- 46:30Terrible man. Oh God Lee he's terrible.
- 46:35But Kong You is not that far behind because when shit starts
- 46:39to go down, he's like shutting doors in people's face.
- 46:43He shuts the door on Madong Sock's face, on his pregnant
- 46:47wife. And later on, he tells his
- 46:50daughter, you got to look out only for yourself in desperate
- 46:53times like these because she gave up her seat for one of the
- 46:55homonies. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:57The little girl tells him at one point you only care about
- 47:01yourself. That's why Mommy left.
- 47:03Yeah. She said what she said.
- 47:05And I feel like the daughter taught him to become more
- 47:08selfless. And so throughout the movie, you
- 47:11see him gradually change and he starts helping people.
- 47:14He starts putting other people before himself.
- 47:16And it wasn't before hearing that influence from his daughter
- 47:19that he was like, oh, like, I need to kind of rethink how I'm
- 47:21going about this. She definitely.
- 47:23Because she doesn't think I'm a good person.
- 47:26I also really liked that when after Kong you close the door,
- 47:30I'm I don't suck. And he was just like, oh, so I
- 47:33think you owe me an apology. Yeah, you just you tried to slam
- 47:35the door and me and my wifes face.
- 47:37You need to apologize to me like because I was like, I'm just
- 47:40gonna sweep that under the rug. Yeah, I know You're like, leave
- 47:44us for dead like. What?
- 47:47What the fuck was that like? Yeah, Hollinson calls him on his
- 47:49shit. Yes, I'd really love that, that
- 47:52he was like, yeah, no, we're not gonna just pretend that didn't
- 47:54happen. Yeah.
- 47:57And they start talking shit about Kong you when he walks
- 47:59away. At some point, I think he's on
- 48:01the phone and they're like, hey, is that your dad?
- 48:03Like your blood relation? Because blood relations are
- 48:06important in Korea. And the little girl says, yes,
- 48:09that's my dad. And he says, oh, sorry about it.
- 48:13What does he do for a living? She goes, oh, he's a fun
- 48:16manager. And he says, oh, so he's a
- 48:18Leech. He's an asshole.
- 48:21Like, you're supposed to think that Kung Yu's character is an
- 48:25asshole, right? And it's pretty great that they
- 48:27had Kun Yu kind of playing against type.
- 48:32Yes, yes, absolutely. Because I've I've never seen him
- 48:35like unlikable before. So it was.
- 48:38Very interesting. Did it?
- 48:39Very interesting. Yeah, exactly.
- 48:41So they get into Tejon Station, This is the one that's like
- 48:45militarized, and they're going to go into quarantine.
- 48:48That moment when they're going down the escalator.
- 48:52This state, the staging and the editing of this scene.
- 48:56Amazing. 10 out of 10 it. Was so good.
- 48:59They go down the escalator and models like everything is.
- 49:02It's eerily quiet. There's no soldiers anywhere,
- 49:06there's no living people around and everyone's like, what is
- 49:10going on? Where is everybody?
- 49:11It should be a working train station bustling with people.
- 49:15At the very least. There's nobody and you're
- 49:18already on pins and needles. You're like, what the fuck's
- 49:20going to? Happen and literally.
- 49:23On. Edge.
- 49:23You're on edge. But everything's working like
- 49:26there's electricity, so they're going down the escalator and
- 49:29there is a wall of a zombie soldiers.
- 49:34Oh my. God, Oh my God, the moment.
- 49:37My heart still sinks when I see that moment.
- 49:39Oh my gosh. I think it's brilliant.
- 49:43And then at the same time, Kong Yu is upstairs with a homeless
- 49:47man. They've run into a soldier who's
- 49:49like, help me. Like I guess the last dude
- 49:51that's made it out and he gets taken down by a zombie and it's
- 49:56coming at them from all sides and this whole escape back onto
- 50:01the train. How they made it through like
- 50:03that whole like scene with like the struggle and the fighting
- 50:05and just how they were able to make it back to the train.
- 50:07It was like you're literally on the edge of your seat and like.
- 50:12Yeah, Oh. My gosh, I was like, are they
- 50:13going to make it through? I was like, we're going to lose
- 50:15like half the cast in this. Field.
- 50:18Somehow they made it through. It's great.
- 50:21And then the but the youth, they get separated.
- 50:23So Kong Yu get separated from his daughter.
- 50:26The harmonies get separated as well.
- 50:29Yes, yes. And Madung so get separated from
- 50:32his wife. Here is my favorite part of the
- 50:35whole movie is when our Three Musketeers, it's Kong, Yu,
- 50:41Madongsuk and Chebushik have to get from car 9 to car 13 to save
- 50:50Madongsuk's pregnant wife and Kung Yu's daughter from the
- 50:54zombies trying to get into because they're trapped in the
- 50:56bathroom. Yes, and all that's between them
- 50:59and the zombies is the little accordion door.
- 51:01Oh yes. My God I die.
- 51:03First of all when the wife was like get your ass over here and
- 51:06like click hangs up the phone. I was like, if I am not that
- 51:11bitch, I would be like get your ass over here and then back to
- 51:14the task at hand. Oh my gosh, it was so good.
- 51:19That whole you're talking about the scene when they were in the
- 51:21train and they're basically trying to signal the zombies to
- 51:24all shift one way so they can like get through and they're
- 51:26like crawling. All of this to get to them.
- 51:30Incredible it was. Unassailable.
- 51:33It is incredible. It was so good, just like the
- 51:37teamwork. And then also like this is when
- 51:40I start to get that found family feeling from the movie as well.
- 51:44Yes. And like these, like this little
- 51:45group of people, like they're really bonded now and they're
- 51:48just, they're genuinely trying to help each other, but they're
- 51:51like a little traumatized family now.
- 51:54They've got to make it through. Yes, but yeah, no.
- 51:57Oh my gosh, amazing. That's the whole sequence of
- 51:59scenes, that whole yeah time that they're trying to make it
- 52:01to the yeah, to everybody else. Incredible.
- 52:04And then I also loved how they were like, using their brains
- 52:07and like, strategy. They're like, OK, what do we
- 52:08know about the zombie? How can we get them to shift,
- 52:11you know, and like, learning how to maneuver in a way that, like,
- 52:14kept them safe. I was like, brilliant.
- 52:16So good. And you get like some more
- 52:19expansion of what the zombies do and don't do.
- 52:22We had already established like if they don't see you, they're
- 52:25based their attack is based on sight basically, right, Right.
- 52:29They're like a freaking T Rex. So if they don't see you, they
- 52:33won't attack. They were already using that to
- 52:35their advantage. But then the moment when they're
- 52:37plunged Into Darkness with the tunnel, oh, oh, the first
- 52:42tunnel. Incredible.
- 52:43Because you think they're on the ropes, right?
- 52:44Like Taylor Chic is frozen in fear because they're fighting
- 52:50the zombified baseball team and he can't do those are his
- 52:54friends. And he is just like so
- 52:57emotional. He's trying to psych himself
- 52:59out. Kong you is about to be go down
- 53:01for the count. Ma Dung Silk is also up against
- 53:03the wall and it's not looking good like for this trio like
- 53:07they could die and then all of a sudden boom, they go through a
- 53:10tunnel. The zombies like they start
- 53:13right, right. You know what I'm saying?
- 53:14Oh my God, it's, it's remarkable.
- 53:18Incredible. I love it, so well done.
- 53:20Yeah, so well done. They make it so they do, they
- 53:23get pick up the wife, they pick up the homeless guy, they pick
- 53:28up the Harmony and the daughter, and then they make it all the
- 53:32way to car 15, which is where the rest of the survivors are.
- 53:35And this is when villain Ajashi this.
- 53:39Guy. This guy had rallied those
- 53:44people into sealing the door and here is like this social
- 53:48experiment pressure cooker to situation that you were
- 53:52referring to in the non spoiler section.
- 53:55This would totally happen in real life, that this more
- 53:58powerful, commanding presence would completely prey on the
- 54:03fear of everybody else in the room.
- 54:06Yeah. And get them to do what he
- 54:08wants. It was terrible.
- 54:09He's just like, they're all infected.
- 54:11We can't let them in. I'm like, clearly they they're
- 54:14not. Don't do that.
- 54:15I was like, they just made it through these trains in one
- 54:18piece and then now this guy is like, no, don't let them in.
- 54:22He was the worst. Yeah, and I think coming from
- 54:26watching what we watch all the time, the dynamic between the
- 54:30villain Ajashi and the guy in the blue jacket who worked for
- 54:35the train line, that attendant, their relationship makes a ton
- 54:40of sense. Why is that guy doing whatever
- 54:44the villain Ajashi tells him to do?
- 54:46Why is he following his orders? There's this whole like
- 54:50hierarchy here that maybe the Western audience doesn't get
- 54:54right, who's maybe not used to This rich asshole has a
- 54:58definitely a lot of pull here. Right, just because of the
- 55:03standing. A lot of social standing.
- 55:05You can tell he's well off. You can tell he's a businessman.
- 55:10You can tell that he's got some social currency here and he's
- 55:14using, he's paying for things all the all the time in the
- 55:18train and in these dire circumstances, he's constantly
- 55:22using his social currency, the eye roll.
- 55:26Could not stand that guy. It was like, yeah, can you just
- 55:29go away now? Like you've caused enough
- 55:31problems. The fact that they covered home
- 55:34girls mouth, they covered the Wonder Girl's mouth, they had
- 55:36her like pinned down. Yes, yes, because she was
- 55:40calling her from the other side of the door and they like he
- 55:44like literally like gabbed her and so he wouldn't hear her.
- 55:47And it was just like what is happening here?
- 55:50This is very low even for you. And this is when we lose 2
- 55:55characters. One Madongsuk.
- 55:59Yes, he gets bit the way that he gets bit.
- 56:03Oh. He was so sad because it's like
- 56:07he was so close, like he could have made.
- 56:09It he could have made it if it wasn't for the villain Addashi.
- 56:12Exactly. He's just like, no, y'all go.
- 56:14He basically had to, like, sacrifice himself.
- 56:16Yeah, for like, the others to get through to the other side.
- 56:20And it was so sad because it was on his hand and like, he didn't
- 56:22even realize. And he looked down and he was
- 56:24like, Oh no. The zombie that was kind of like
- 56:28by the floor noticed that his hand was on the door and then
- 56:34like slid up. It was just so disturbing to see
- 56:37as well. Like the zombie was like and
- 56:39like went all the way up and boom bites him on the hand and
- 56:43that's it. He's marked for death.
- 56:45He names the baby before like his wife takes off.
- 56:49Come on. And I mean we also lose how many
- 56:54one of the how many's in this scene, right?
- 56:56Yes. The older 1, yes.
- 56:59And they were sisters, the two how many's were sisters?
- 57:01So it was really sad. And again, she sacrificed
- 57:05herself too. But when they get through, you
- 57:08can see this big change in Kong you because he's like, why
- 57:11didn't you open the door? Like, how could you do that?
- 57:14And he flies at the villain, Aja.
- 57:16She starts beating on him. Like, rightfully so.
- 57:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:21Because they took losses there when they didn't need to.
- 57:23Yeah, exactly. And then the other how many?
- 57:26She really upset because her sister is gone.
- 57:29She was. Already grieving for her sister,
- 57:32thinking that maybe she was lost in the say at the train and the
- 57:35Tejon station. Exactly.
- 57:38And then lo and behold, she's alive and they have this moment
- 57:41like across the glass, this elation because she's her
- 57:45sister's alive. And then boom, like she gets hit
- 57:48with this onslaught of zombies and you're like Oh my God to
- 57:52lose her. Twice exactly, basically.
- 57:55And like, she was just so distraught and hurt because my
- 57:58sister put herself in front, you know, before other people.
- 58:02And she was just like. And so then she just, like,
- 58:03opens the door, yeah. And let's all the zombies in as
- 58:08like revenge. Oh my God.
- 58:12And those two sisters, actually, they they're watching the news
- 58:16earlier on the train. The outbreak is happening on the
- 58:20news. And they say, oh, my God, people
- 58:22will just riot for anything nowadays.
- 58:24And one of the sisters says, back in the day, these people
- 58:27would be re educated. And they're referring to Korea's
- 58:32past with dictatorships, South Korea's past.
- 58:36You know, the Western audience might not get that, that like
- 58:40they are looking at this from a completely different lens.
- 58:43And maybe the younger generation of Koreans who have no
- 58:47experience and no memory of a time before a democratic Korea
- 58:51such. A good point.
- 58:52So this is probably very triggering for them, at least at
- 58:57that point watching the news. Right, right.
- 58:59Exactly. Oh, man.
- 59:01Just so layered. There's just so much change.
- 59:03It's not just zombies. There's so much happening.
- 59:05I know so. They have to change trains and
- 59:11this is kind of heading into the third act of the movie.
- 59:14They have to change trains and the that villain fucking guy.
- 59:19I can't believe that he survives the onslaught in his cabin.
- 59:25Exactly because the person released those zombies as
- 59:28revenge on on that guy and like he managed to weasel his way
- 59:32out. Him and the.
- 59:34Him and the attendant, I thought that he was like, surely a
- 59:37goner. Yeah.
- 59:38And like, I was like, oh, he's still.
- 59:40Yeah. But Even so, like when they're
- 59:42trying to, they're securing the side with the survivors.
- 59:47Yeah, right. With Kung Yu, his daughter, the
- 59:49pregnant lady, like everybody's been, they've been separated
- 59:53into the next vegetable, and they're sealing off that side
- 59:57versus the side with the real zombies on it.
- 59:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. But when they're doing that, the
- 1:00:02villain Ajashi is just sitting there delegating and barking
- 1:00:06orders at people and looking kind of, you know, haggard and
- 1:00:10annoyed at the whole situation. That's another way of seeing how
- 1:00:16he's not even doing any of the work.
- 1:00:18Nope, not at all. Not at all.
- 1:00:20Not even doing any. Of the work to assure them,
- 1:00:22yeah, yeah, he's like, I'm the leader because I'm better than
- 1:00:25all of you, but I'm not doing anything.
- 1:00:27Due to his maybe gender, due to his age, due to his position, a
- 1:00:32lot of factors at play there that he's just sitting around
- 1:00:36doing nothing. Exactly.
- 1:00:39And that's why he's able to see the harmony all the way at the
- 1:00:42other end of the cabin, open the door with the zombies.
- 1:00:46And that's the massacre that happens in cabin 15.
- 1:00:51And it's it's terrifying, it's terrible.
- 1:00:55But he survives this onslaught. In this part of the movie he
- 1:00:59lies to the attendant that the coast is clear and then pushes
- 1:01:04him into a zombie to make an escape and this is when he goes
- 1:01:09for a bad to worse. Like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:13Reaches new lows. Yes.
- 1:01:15He just kept reaching lower and lower, and he just kept getting
- 1:01:18worse from here. Like there's so many people he
- 1:01:21pushed into zombies by the end of the movie.
- 1:01:24He not only like he fucks everybody over.
- 1:01:28Yep. Because when he leaves the
- 1:01:30train, he leaves the train door wide open, Yes.
- 1:01:33And that's all the zombies escaped from the cabin exactly
- 1:01:38where he was. There were no zombies out in the
- 1:01:41train yard anyway. So then he runs into Che Bouchic
- 1:01:48and the Wonder Girl, and literally it happens in a split
- 1:01:53second. He comes across them and pushes,
- 1:01:56shoves the Wonder Girl into the zombie on his tail.
- 1:02:00I mean, the devil take him. Like he's just terrible.
- 1:02:03Like after all of this, Oh my God.
- 1:02:07Awful. And then, of course, Toshi is
- 1:02:10devastated. And he's like.
- 1:02:11Holding her, it was so sad. And then Toshi gets bitten by a
- 1:02:16zombie too and I was just like. Him just holding her as she
- 1:02:19convulses and he's like, yeah. The guy like he doesn't.
- 1:02:22Know what to do and. Yeah.
- 1:02:24And then he gets bit and so the you just you know what happened
- 1:02:27that's. It like.
- 1:02:29And it was just like, Dang, like, we're not reaching like
- 1:02:31the end of this journey because people are just getting killed
- 1:02:33off, right? And it was so sad.
- 1:02:36The homeless man sacrifices himself so that the pregnant
- 1:02:39lady and the little girl can get out from underneath the train
- 1:02:43'cause it was a whole train derailment in the.
- 1:02:45Oh my gosh, yes. Can we talk about that?
- 1:02:47That scene stressed me out because the conductor.
- 1:02:50First of all, God bless the conductor.
- 1:02:52God bless the conductor. Yeah, RIP conductor.
- 1:02:55He, he really tried. He really was so honorable.
- 1:02:58And he was like, I'm going to go like, you know, hop across the
- 1:03:01train yard to another train. And he told the people like, you
- 1:03:04know, get off on the like this this side and like get on this
- 1:03:07train. And so he hops over there, he
- 1:03:09gets on the train, gets it going, and then all of a sudden
- 1:03:12there's this other train that's like on fire and like derailed
- 1:03:15and it crashes with his train so that we can assume that the
- 1:03:17conductor is gone. And but it causes like this like
- 1:03:20little cave situation. He's fine.
- 1:03:24Like he's, he's in the yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:26He sees it coming down the, the track and he's like, what the
- 1:03:30hell. But he he's not injured in that,
- 1:03:32in that. Crowd OK, OK, OK OK good.
- 1:03:35Yeah, but it caused like like kind of like this little where
- 1:03:37the two trains meet. It was like a little like cave.
- 1:03:40And so Kong, you pregnant lady. Yeah, Kong, you, the pregnant
- 1:03:44lady, the kid and the homeless. Man, homeless man.
- 1:03:48And they're like trapped under there.
- 1:03:49And like the train is constantly kind of going lower and lower
- 1:03:52and lower. It's getting closer and closer
- 1:03:54to the ground. And so Ganyu gets out first so
- 1:03:57he can like help everybody out of the hole, but then this large
- 1:04:00metal thing blocks the hole. So we have to fight to get it
- 1:04:03out. And those zombies are coming.
- 1:04:04And he's trying to like, because the zombies are like falling out
- 1:04:06of the train that crashed into the hole.
- 1:04:09So like, like the stakes are high.
- 1:04:11Like the weight of the zombies and they're struggling to get to
- 1:04:15them because they see them through the glass.
- 1:04:17Yes. And like how you gets his
- 1:04:20daughter out, he gets the pregnant lady out, and then
- 1:04:22those zombies start coming out of the train and the homeless
- 1:04:25guy literally sacrifices himself.
- 1:04:27Yeah. Was I blocking the zombies from
- 1:04:30getting to them? I was like this kind of man was
- 1:04:35so it was so stressful. I was like, I can't, I can't.
- 1:04:38It was it was the stress more so that was going to Take Me Out
- 1:04:42before, like the fear of the zombies because I was like,
- 1:04:45like, what's going to happen? Oh my God.
- 1:04:50But then the conductor sees the villain and she running across
- 1:04:53the tracks. Yes.
- 1:04:55He's hounded by zombies following him and he's like, Oh
- 1:04:59my God, he's not gonna make it because the villain and she
- 1:05:00trips on the. My gosh, Oh my gosh, yes.
- 1:05:03Okay, now I remember. Yes, the conductor was still
- 1:05:06yes. The conductor leaves the train.
- 1:05:10Yes. To help the villain Ajashi, and
- 1:05:14the villain Ajashi basically pulls him down.
- 1:05:16Yes. And this one, it's unclear if
- 1:05:19the villain Ajashi meant to do this.
- 1:05:21I think he did. You think he meant to do it like
- 1:05:23pull him down and let the zombies get him because it was
- 1:05:28very close. You know it.
- 1:05:30It's unclear. The villain Ajashi gets clean
- 1:05:34away, you know? Yeah, so, so sad for the
- 1:05:37conductor because he tried his best.
- 1:05:39He. Tried and they get him and then
- 1:05:41yeah and. They got him.
- 1:05:43And this decrepit man ends up on the train.
- 1:05:46So anyway Long story short, Kong Yu, the pregnant lady and the
- 1:05:50kid end up on the one train that is heading to Pusan.
- 1:05:55Like this is the only train that's made it and is on the
- 1:05:58track to Pusan. Thanks to this wonderful
- 1:06:01conductor who put it on the track, who is there waiting for
- 1:06:06them when he opens the. Villain Adoshi.
- 1:06:10This fucking villain, Adoshi, And you know it builds upon
- 1:06:13itself, right? So the zombies, it looked like
- 1:06:17if their will to live was very strong, yeah, then it would take
- 1:06:22longer for them to change. Right.
- 1:06:27Into a zombie. Like that's what I'm inferring
- 1:06:30because the villain Adashi looked like he was already a
- 1:06:32zombie but he was speaking. Yeah, he was like trying to hang
- 1:06:36on for as long as he could. Yeah.
- 1:06:38And they, and then they throw in this thing where he's like,
- 1:06:40look, I have a mom, I want to get back to my mom and Pusan and
- 1:06:44yadda, yadda, yadda. And he's like Ajishi, you're a
- 1:06:48zombie. Yeah, like you're done.
- 1:06:53Komyu sacrifices himself to save his daughter and the pregnant
- 1:06:58lady because this. Ajishi lunges at them at one
- 1:07:03point during their fight and he puts his hand in front of the
- 1:07:07zombie's mouth and that's when he gets bit and I.
- 1:07:13Was like no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, Nope.
- 1:07:18I was like, maybe the zombie didn't bite his hand.
- 1:07:20There's no way. There's no way.
- 1:07:22And like, just the realization that like, oh, it's all over.
- 1:07:26So then like on you finally, like throws him off of the
- 1:07:28train, right. He throws him.
- 1:07:31Yeah. And yeah.
- 1:07:32And then he, like, rushes to his daughter and the pregnant lady.
- 1:07:35He's like telling told a pregnant lady.
- 1:07:37Like this is where the break is. When you find a place to stop.
- 1:07:39Pull. This.
- 1:07:40Yeah, because it was all written in English.
- 1:07:42Yes, yeah. So like, please take care of
- 1:07:44her. And he was like, you know,
- 1:07:45talking to the daughter and like, he's like, rushing,
- 1:07:48rushing because he's like, I'm going to turn at any minute.
- 1:07:51It was devastating because like, the daughter was crying so hard.
- 1:07:55Please don't leave me. Which was something that she had
- 1:07:58not. Really said exactly to that
- 1:08:00point exactly. And he like had to leave the
- 1:08:04cabin, obviously, because he's he's turning.
- 1:08:07And like, you just see this shot of him and like, you know, the
- 1:08:10film, you know, comes on his eyes and it's happening, like
- 1:08:13the change is happening. And you just see this, this
- 1:08:15flashback of him when he like held his daughter for the first
- 1:08:18time after she was born. And like, he's like smiling.
- 1:08:22And then he you just see like the shadow of him like fall off
- 1:08:27the train. I was in tears.
- 1:08:30I was like. Yeah.
- 1:08:31When did you start crying? When did you?
- 1:08:33Start that's when I I started crying when he realized he got
- 1:08:36bit and he was like rushing to give the pregnant lady
- 1:08:39directions about how to operate the train and then sue on is
- 1:08:42like screaming, screaming, screaming like daddy, please
- 1:08:44don't leave. No, no, no, no.
- 1:08:46Like, Oh my God, she was, she was masterful.
- 1:08:48Oh my gosh, amazing performance, Amazing performance.
- 1:08:52But that's when I started crying, just hearing her
- 1:08:54screams. And she was doing that like
- 1:08:55Chesty. Scream.
- 1:08:56You know. Yes, yes.
- 1:08:58Like even when he's sitting outside the train, he could
- 1:09:00still hear her screams. And I'm just like, I'm just so
- 1:09:04crying. So I was like, Oh no, that's
- 1:09:07when I started. I didn't stop till like the end.
- 1:09:10Like it never stopped. And like you found out earlier
- 1:09:14that the reason she stopped singing at her little recital at
- 1:09:19school was because he wasn't there.
- 1:09:22She practiced that song specifically for him.
- 1:09:26And when she looked at the at the audience, he wasn't there.
- 1:09:29So she stopped singing. And it just goes to show that
- 1:09:34she was craving his affection, craving his presence.
- 1:09:37She wanted to connect with him, but he was never there.
- 1:09:40He was an absent father. Something that Ma Dung Suk said
- 1:09:46during one of the about halfway through the movie was, you know,
- 1:09:49fathers like, they get all the shit and they do all the
- 1:09:51sacrificing and they and they catch all this shit.
- 1:09:55And it was kind of like a small, profound moment with our trio
- 1:09:58because I think they were locked in the bathroom across from the
- 1:10:01daughter and the homeless man and the the pregnant wife and
- 1:10:04stuff, waiting for the next tunnel.
- 1:10:07And he was like, she won't appreciate you until later.
- 1:10:12And so you get this final scene of the two final girls.
- 1:10:17This is the horror trope, right? The final girl.
- 1:10:20You have two final girls here going through a tunnel.
- 1:10:25You don't know what's on the other side.
- 1:10:27And the soldiers, not that are on the other side, can't verify
- 1:10:31if they're infected because they're back lit in the tunnel.
- 1:10:35They're walking kind of haggard. They're not limping or anything,
- 1:10:37but they just look tired through the scope.
- 1:10:40And the soldiers get the kill order, but she starts singing.
- 1:10:45I lost it. Her song for her dad, This is
- 1:10:51When I start crying is like when she starts singing and she
- 1:10:55finishes the song. Yeah, for her dad, man.
- 1:10:59I I I lose it every time. Yeah, I lost it because she's
- 1:11:03just, she's like crying really hard as she's singing the song.
- 1:11:06And the soldiers hearing the song is the reason why they
- 1:11:10cancel the kill order because they're like, Oh my gosh, those
- 1:11:12are survivors. And so like, you're just seeing
- 1:11:15Suan, like, cry and like, sing her song for her dad.
- 1:11:18Then the movie ends, screen goes black, and I was just like, that
- 1:11:23was an emotional roller coaster that I was not ready for it all.
- 1:11:27Yeah, and this is a great subversion of of the Night of
- 1:11:31the Living Dead movie. I'm going to guess that you
- 1:11:34haven't seen the 1968 Night of the Living Dead movie, but
- 1:11:37spoiler for this very famous ending of Night of the Living
- 1:11:42Dead. So this is the one that started
- 1:11:44it all for modern zombies. The end of Night of the Living
- 1:11:48Dead, The sole survivor, Ben, is mistaken for a zombie and shot
- 1:11:54and killed by a posse of police. The added bonus is that he's
- 1:11:59black, so like in 19. 68 This was incredibly.
- 1:12:03Charged right? Oh.
- 1:12:05My. God that this black man was shot
- 1:12:07by police, mistaken for a zombie and all this stuff.
- 1:12:09So it's very racially charged. However, the same thing almost
- 1:12:13happens here at the end of Train to Pusan, that these two vinyl
- 1:12:17girls are almost mistaken for zombies and they're almost shot
- 1:12:23and killed. But then because of our Korean
- 1:12:27sensibilities, like the heart and emotions really shine
- 1:12:32through here because seeds that they had planted before come
- 1:12:37back in. And it's a full circle moment
- 1:12:41where she finishes the song for her dad.
- 1:12:44And that's what saves them, yes. It was beautiful.
- 1:12:49I was. It's a sign that they are human.
- 1:12:52Yes, yes, that they love, you know, yes, this overt expression
- 1:12:58of love saves them. Yes.
- 1:13:01And I remember, like, thinking at the end of the movie, it's
- 1:13:03like, I hope that like as she grows up, she like is able to
- 1:13:07even though their relationship was not the best, that she like,
- 1:13:10does understand and see that like her dad really did love her
- 1:13:14and like, sacrifice for her. But yeah, it was it was a
- 1:13:18beautiful ending. It's beautiful.
- 1:13:20I didn't expect it to be like that at all.
- 1:13:23Like, I wasn't, I wasn't ready. I don't.
- 1:13:26Think anybody was ready? And I think it still works.
- 1:13:29I think it's wonderful and it's powerful, so powerful, so
- 1:13:34powerful, and that's it. It ends kind of on a hopeful
- 1:13:36note. A lot of zombie movies are kind
- 1:13:38of open-ended. Does humanity survive?
- 1:13:41We don't know. Whatever.
- 1:13:45I don't think that necessarily matters for the movie.
- 1:13:48You kind of find out what happens to humanity and how
- 1:13:52things shake out in Peninsula. But again, if you don't feel
- 1:13:56like watching Peninsula, you can just watch Train to Busan and be
- 1:14:01happy that it it kind of ends on a high, a bittersweet high that
- 1:14:07they are saved. Yeah, it was an excellent movie.
- 1:14:10I'm really glad I watched it finally.
- 1:14:12Yes, the last person on earth that I watched it I it feels
- 1:14:15like. Do you have any final thoughts
- 1:14:19about Train to Pusan? I just really loved it.
- 1:14:23And honestly, if you're out there and you're like me and you
- 1:14:25don't like scary things, I think that this is a very palatable
- 1:14:31quote UN quote scary zombie movie.
- 1:14:34So even if your tolerance is really low, like mine, it's like
- 1:14:36on the ground. Like I think that you would
- 1:14:37really appreciate this movie a lot.
- 1:14:40So yeah, highly recommend. I really loved it.
- 1:14:42Thank you for having me on for this.
