Latest / Guy Football Focus with Guy Haberman / What John Lynch Said That Had Nothing To Do With Trent Williams
Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Trot Williams was not the topic that stood out to me watching John Lynch talk even though I know rightfully it's the thing that most of you are texting your buddies about I though the thing that seemed like the biggest frustration they have and They're going to have to find a way to address it because I don't think John Jennings is going to be the answer is receiver
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: They got no snaps from Jacob Cowling on offense.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: They got what six targets from Jordan Watkins.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: If you're the 49ers, three targets from Jordan Watkins, if you're the 49ers this year, you're thinking, okay, if we're going to add a receiver, can't be in the fourth round, because the last two fourth rounders have not materialized anything.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: And part of their offseason is going to be
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: Jordan Watkins.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: Can you make a jump in your two?
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: But we just did that story last year, which Jacob Cowling and the answer was no, didn't get on the field.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: Got on the field less.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: Then he did as a rookie, and he barely got on the field as a rookie.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then he bought a rookie pair saw.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, similar, like, there was a lot of the off-season last year to this year, like, okay, finally, and then early injury and big games and lot of absences and some, like, really promising production, you know, I thought when he was healthy, they began to the air.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: He was not, I thought he was producing like one of the best receivers in the league.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: His production numbers were that doesn't mean he was one of the best receivers, but I think he was one of the best receivers.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: One healthy.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't think they can go into a year next year with him as they're best received, relying on him to be their best receiver.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think what's crazy about it was frustrating about it for them, I'm sure, is if he was a healthy guy, I do think, because you use kiddo, because you use McAfrey, because I
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: I do think you can go into the air with him is your quote unquote number one receiver.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: It would kind of be a repeat of some of the IU gears where you're like, well, he's a number one receiver, but he's not really a true number one receiver, but for them, he's a number one receiver.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: He'd be a two A on a great team that doesn't have a pass catching running back who's going to catch a hundred balls and a tight end who's, but now he's coming off an injury.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: So they, you know, I think in an ideal world.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: they would be drafting at the top of the first route, not an ideal world based on the year, but an ideal world they'd be at the top of the first route and no receiver heavy draft.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: And they could have maybe the second best receiver.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: That was last year.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: That was last year.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: And I think they, I've said it.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's plenty evidence out there.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: I had heard it before the draft from other people.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: I heard it from a scout drafting around the area where the Niners were, but they like Titeroma, McMillan.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, rightfully, but like like them, like them, like like.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: And,
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying they would have drafted him if he was there, but I think they might have drafted him if he was there and I know Michael was the guy and Kyle Shanahan told his family, Michael's the guy, well, okay, here we are, you're later and you're at the end of the first round.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: Now, good receiver draft in the fur.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be my guess is when the honors draft
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: The, there will have been minimum for receivers taken.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think you look at mock drafts like maybe five, maybe they would take the fifth guy.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: If so many needs, as was the case last year, they have so many needs though, that it's like, is that the spot, to me that's not the spot.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: That is not the pick.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: Receiver at the end of the first round now.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe by the time we get to the draft, I'll fall in love with somebody, it happens.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: But that's not the pick in my mind like if you're not going to be getting one of those guys, especially given the way rookies have performed, but if you're not going to get one of those guys for the nighters at the top of the round.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: Unless you L-O-V and all caps love somebody, I would, and even then, like, I'd be like, really, you love somebody, you love the fifth best receiver in this draft at the end of the first round, to me, that's like my Kevin's, okay, who has obviously been connected to the 49ers.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: I would approve!
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'll let the finance department figure it out.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: I'll let Prague figure it out.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: If you're asking just from forget the money for a second, guy, would you or wouldn't you be willing to bring this guy in the building for the right price?
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: I would approve an AJ Brown trade.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'd approve it.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: Now the money's his cap hit is actually like star receiver cap hit.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: And he didn't play well against the diners.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: had a key drop in the playoffs.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't like one of those go catch 18 balls against them and then they go get you.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: But that's fine.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe it hurts his value a little bit in the trade market and maybe that's a good thing.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: Although it does seem like a pretty open secret what's going on in Philly.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's been kind of rumbling for a while.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: This is why I say all the time
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, when coward had the thing the other day, and I said it previously, like, oh, nobody, there's no other quarterbacks the NFC people would take over Donald.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: The Donald story is fantastic.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: Tomorrow on the show, a quarterback conversation you will not wanna miss.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's excellent.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, with a very, very, very, I did this last year, some off-season football conversations with, that were beyond just like who should have team signed, whatever, but like really what makes the game, what makes the best players tick, what makes the best play-colors, successful all that stuff, Wednesday, Nate Longshore, Nate Longshore, former Calcorta back, but he's been a, you became a coach.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: and he's very into the quarterback study world and the development world and he and I talked to him.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: We recorded it two days and got some great things to say.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I think you're gonna really love it.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: And we talked about Sam Darnell and what a great turnaround.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: And what a great career.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: But careers are not made in one year.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: The most invisible superpower is invisibility.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: But number two is consistency.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: if you draft some quarterbacks right now, among active quarterbacks and GM's, you know, I don't, I thought about this till this moment off the top, I don't, he's definitely not going to the top 10.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: Is he top 15?
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'd rather have perdi.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think it's particularly close.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I know that's, and I don't think it's hot, I don't think it's hot.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's not a hot take.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: Let me know when they start talking about hurts and Philly the way, just in the locker room, publicly the way all these guys talk about Brock.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not about those two against each other.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying it's very possible that the reason things haven't gone well and Philly is not AJ Brown.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: I know he's tough and receivers are sometimes and they can develop into divas after they have some success.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: We'll stop waiting for the guy to become one, just get a diva who's a proven game changer.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's a game changer.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: He is a game changer.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: And when I watch John Lynch today, he sounds like guys frustrated that they have not found, they have tried and tried and tried and tried and tried to find a consistent, they have got to be so frustrated that it received right now.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: They've got to be so frustrated and they found one and it was a yuk and then it all went sideways.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: And he's not coming back.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then I think they kind of backed into the thing with Pierceall, remember they were trying to trade out of the first round, nobody wanted to trade out.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: Should they have taken Cooper Dijane?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'd say right now, yeah.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: But it was going to be, if I think of Pierceall's healthy, it's fine.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: He is to me at worst with the way that this team wants to be constructed, like a good number two.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: And the shit ain't offense, you can win with a good number two if you've got a solid defense as your best receiver, like just the wide receiver position, not your number one pass catcher.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not trending in the right direction.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: They can't be encouraged right now, hopeful.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think these teams plan, not just six months in ahead, but like a couple years ahead, and I would imagine if we got like on the white board in John Lynch's office, if he had a white board, and it had, you know, decisions I got to make this week, decisions I got to make next month, decisions I got to make next year, next to Pearson's all 50 year option is a big question mark.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like right now, that's not something you're doing.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Now it's fine,
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I'd rather have a guy who, when healthy looked good, but he needs to get healthy than a guy who is healthy but doesn't look good.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, there's a chance for Ricky here, but I think they just have to feel like, this is not about evaluating Ricky right now, it's about evaluating the reality that they have to feel like they need something of that position and they're not in position
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: And that, to me, as much as the Trump Williams headline, a worthy headline, and it is the headline.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: But I watched John Lynch, I thought, okay, is there anything, what can I, what do I feel like I can add, there's every angle of showings just getting covered on Tuesday night.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: So, and that's, I wasn't digging for it.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: I was, I just watched it with that in mind, like, is there anything else that jumps out to me?
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: And what John Lynch talked about, receiver the answer was, yes, something,
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: So there you go.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: All right, coming up on Wednesday conversation with a quarterback expert.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: It is the best quarterback in conversation.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to hear all week.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: I want you to watch it.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: So you look at the 49ers and the rest of the league and the combine this week and drafting and cuby development and college guys and high school guys, the whole deal, no matter what angle you're coming at it from, I think you're going to like it.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: That is coming out on Wednesday.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: Appreciate you guys.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll touch you later.
