- 1:08Speaker 3: on your radio.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Coach. Always good to see you, sir. How are you.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I'm doing great? How are you? Man?
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's hot. It's hot.
- 1:12Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:12Speaker 3: We were talking about that, me and you when I
- 1:14Speaker 3: pulled up, and it was funny to hear you talk
- 1:17Speaker 3: about you know, we were at Northwest yesterday and the
- 1:18Speaker 3: coach Cooper was saying, y'all obviously know each other well.
- 1:22Speaker 3: A little hotter in flow Wood than Pearl. It's weird
- 1:24Speaker 3: how that just works that way.
- 1:25Speaker 5: It's almost where do you go, like, you know, did
- 1:28Speaker 5: place on the field to get different reading. So it's
- 1:32Speaker 5: something everybody's dealing with, so we'll all deal with it.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Brent, so le's figure it out.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Let's get into this football season. You know last year,
- 1:39Speaker 3: you guys were extremely competitive, had some big wins. Last year,
- 1:42Speaker 3: you know, went down to Pedal and got to win
- 1:45Speaker 3: the week before Halloween. You know you you played at
- 1:48Speaker 3: Groverly close for most of the game Northwest ranking. You
- 1:51Speaker 3: lost a close when there was some there was some
- 1:52Speaker 3: good wins, there was some tough losses. Battling some injuries
- 1:56Speaker 3: last year kind of take us through last year. May
- 1:57Speaker 3: y'all were so close, like every game is like a
- 2:00Speaker 3: here play there.
- 2:00Speaker 5: You know, I told you guys, we gotta figure out
- 2:02Speaker 5: how to score seven or defend seven more.
- 2:05Speaker 4: This year.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Tough, tough schedule, so you have very few.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Margin vera now, there's no doubt about it. And you
- 2:14Speaker 3: know you play these we know non conferences coming up.
- 2:16Speaker 3: We'll get into this weekend next week here in a bit,
- 2:18Speaker 3: but you play those those tough games the first month
- 2:21Speaker 3: to get your guys ready and of course the region
- 2:23Speaker 3: you guys play in I still say is one of
- 2:25Speaker 3: the best in the state, no doubt.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Oh yeah, no doubt.
- 2:28Speaker 3: You know, I think Region two maybe by just a hair,
- 2:30Speaker 3: but it's not much. But Region three definitely one of
- 2:33Speaker 3: the toughest. So tell us a little about how spring went,
- 2:36Speaker 3: the summer and kind of what you guys were you're
- 2:37Speaker 3: at today.
- 2:38Speaker 5: I thought we had a good spring, a bunch of
- 2:40Speaker 5: young guys come in playing. Summer was really good for
- 2:42Speaker 5: I thought the tenants was the best we have that
- 2:44Speaker 5: I've been here. Did some seven old sevens on Tuesdays,
- 2:48Speaker 5: went in a little seven old seven camp in Memphis.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Thought the kids got acted pretty well. You know, we've
- 2:54Speaker 5: got to get a fall count, you know, we'll be
- 2:55Speaker 5: able to dodge the bullets on the heat. So far,
- 2:59Speaker 5: kids have been short practice like they're supposed to be,
- 3:01Speaker 5: and we're just gonna we're gonna be young.
- 3:03Speaker 4: You know when young kids scare you a.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Little bit, but they're talented and we'll just hopefully little
- 3:08Speaker 5: growing pains we can win a ballgame or two with them.
- 3:10Speaker 3: You know, when you look at this version, you had
- 3:12Speaker 3: some guys graduate now obviously new quarterbacks, some different players.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Kind of take us through who some of those guys
- 3:17Speaker 2: may be.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Crew that would gonna be the quarterback right now.
- 3:19Speaker 5: And uh Crew's got some some valuable snaps his first
- 3:22Speaker 5: year whenever Jack got hurt.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Uh then last year.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Just played JV and a few few high school games
- 3:28Speaker 5: and not very many when uh we didn't we wouldn't
- 3:31Speaker 5: never winning big or losing big enough to bring the
- 3:33Speaker 5: JV quarterback in. So uh, but he's got command the offense.
- 3:37Speaker 5: I think he's gonna do a good job for us hopefully.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Uh really good in the backfield. Got two big running
- 3:42Speaker 5: backs Alexander and Parks are too big body that you
- 3:46Speaker 5: got to defend over and over again, and people don't
- 3:48Speaker 5: want to defend that. So did get a couple of
- 3:51Speaker 5: kids come out, one young one, one young sophomore receiver
- 3:55Speaker 5: got us finally got a senior receiver come out from
- 3:57Speaker 5: from the gym. Uh Jadon's stringfellow is going. I think
- 4:00Speaker 5: that chance will be really special. Is that a really
- 4:02Speaker 5: really good all season? Did not do spring with us,
- 4:05Speaker 5: but it's just seven on seven, Uh Friday night be
- 4:08Speaker 5: his first real game for us. So we're excited to
- 4:10Speaker 5: see what he can do. Uh six three six four
- 4:12Speaker 5: bodies hard to defend. Sometimes. So we'll be young up front.
- 4:15Speaker 5: We're gonna start two sophomore and two juniors and one senior. Uh.
- 4:19Speaker 5: The senior and one of the junior's played some last
- 4:21Speaker 5: year with so three nine players last year playing this year.
- 4:25Speaker 5: So no, that's always scary. But with two big running
- 4:28Speaker 5: backs in the backfield, you didn't get a blot great
- 4:30Speaker 5: in the youth fall for yard or two to keep
- 4:32Speaker 5: you in a good spot on the dun distance.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Talking with the head football coach Pearl Pirates Patrick Schooler
- 4:37Speaker 3: on your radio it is Wednesday, stream us on the
- 4:40Speaker 3: Zone one O five nine dot com. You know you
- 4:41Speaker 3: just mentioned something there. I was gonna ask you. When
- 4:44Speaker 3: you got offensive linemen that are young, it's it's hard
- 4:47Speaker 3: to hide them, right, especially if they're gonna start.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I mean, they're gonna be every snap.
- 4:50Speaker 3: But if you've got some experienced backs and you've got
- 4:52Speaker 3: some bigger backs, just what you said, is that kind
- 4:55Speaker 3: of the message to the to the young offensive lineman is, hey,
- 4:57Speaker 3: you don't have to be perfect.
- 4:59Speaker 2: You just need to be a effective, good.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Getting away defender. Me ball here and make it happen
- 5:05Speaker 5: something I like that. So, but we had we had
- 5:08Speaker 5: a pretty good old line, and we'd moved over D line.
- 5:10Speaker 5: He's always played online. He's really D line is what
- 5:12Speaker 5: he is, and he's gonna be a senior. And I
- 5:14Speaker 5: was like, just put him over there. Let the young
- 5:16Speaker 5: guys learn this year when they got to be great
- 5:19Speaker 5: because of those two big, big guys in the backfield'll
- 5:22Speaker 5: make up for a lot of myths blocks. So, but
- 5:24Speaker 5: that's gonna be be the model. Run the ball at
- 5:27Speaker 5: people and be real physical and play good defense and
- 5:29Speaker 5: trying in the game in the fourth quarter.
- 5:31Speaker 3: You know, hearing you also talk about moving young men.
- 5:34Speaker 3: We've talked with several coaches on our road tour so far.
- 5:36Speaker 3: They said, hey, yeah, we took a guy. Maybe he
- 5:38Speaker 3: played receiver, but we moved him to corner offensive lineman
- 5:41Speaker 3: a defensive lineman. I think that's a lost art that
- 5:44Speaker 3: we don't even talk about that the you coaches have
- 5:46Speaker 3: to do and have to be able to say, hey,
- 5:48Speaker 3: we had him here, but we need to put him
- 5:50Speaker 3: way over there. That's that's very difficult to do. You know,
- 5:54Speaker 3: coaches have a n act for that, and then also
- 5:56Speaker 3: how do you get the kid to buy into that
- 5:59Speaker 3: because some kids will say, no, sir, I'm a center.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Or I'm a right tackle, you're not a I'm not
- 6:03Speaker 3: a noseguard.
- 6:03Speaker 4: That's what.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Yeah, you don't give a choice, right if they want
- 6:08Speaker 5: to play, they'll do what we ask them to do.
- 6:09Speaker 5: And like nobody's gonna bucket really because then they see
- 6:12Speaker 5: we're trying to build a build a good, good program here.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Uh they want to win ball games, so we whatever
- 6:17Speaker 5: we say do, they're gonna do it for the most part.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Or they're just that's how they raise how they are. Uh.
- 6:21Speaker 5: But I think we've got a good chance to be
- 6:23Speaker 5: really really good this year if we can stay healthy.
- 6:25Speaker 5: But we can't. We can't get injured in certain spots
- 6:28Speaker 5: this year. But maybe everything like that. Sure, nobody wants
- 6:30Speaker 5: to lose a quarterback. I mean everybody's got He's a
- 6:32Speaker 5: starter for a reason because he's better than the next one.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Uh.
- 6:34Speaker 5: We just you know, some of our depths not as
- 6:36Speaker 5: good it needs to be. Maybe have some good players
- 6:40Speaker 5: back behind them. They're just gonna be young and not
- 6:41Speaker 5: ready to play, you know, but something may football will
- 6:43Speaker 5: exposure in a hurry. If you're not ready to play.
- 6:46Speaker 4: You don't.
- 6:46Speaker 3: But one of the things about Pearl uh and it's
- 6:48Speaker 3: always been this way, and you've kept that that tradition
- 6:50Speaker 3: going is your kids are tough, They get after it,
- 6:53Speaker 3: and you know they that if you're gonna be in
- 6:55Speaker 3: a game with pearl, you know that you've been in
- 6:57Speaker 3: a football game.
- 6:58Speaker 5: When it's over with, that's time. All the time is
- 6:59Speaker 5: just a mentality we're gonna have here. You know, last
- 7:03Speaker 5: year's team a great little team, but but they weren't
- 7:05Speaker 5: very great. If you look at them, they wouldn't have
- 7:07Speaker 5: a very talented football team. They didn't uh you know what,
- 7:10Speaker 5: no no superstar out there. But we were in every
- 7:12Speaker 5: ball game but won.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Last year.
- 7:14Speaker 5: You know, played some really tough games all way down
- 7:16Speaker 5: in the fourth quarter with and we left. But the
- 7:18Speaker 5: day we had four linebackers. None of them were six
- 7:20Speaker 5: ft none them were over one hundred and eighty pounds
- 7:22Speaker 5: in this league and they play their tails off. So
- 7:25Speaker 5: it's one of those deals that you know, you play
- 7:27Speaker 5: bigger than you are, you play tougher, and you you
- 7:29Speaker 5: me and all the ball that you want to be in.
- 7:30Speaker 5: This year's team have a chance to be more athletic
- 7:33Speaker 5: than we've had to hear in the past. So if
- 7:36Speaker 5: we can put it all together and make a little
- 7:37Speaker 5: run at it and stay healthy. It's gonna it should
- 7:40Speaker 5: be some fun Friday nights for us.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Who do you guys play Friday in the scrimmage?
- 7:43Speaker 4: Kenton? Gover with Kenton for two quarters and a quarter
- 7:46Speaker 4: of j V.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And then, uh, you know, what, what do you look
- 7:49Speaker 3: for in a moment like Friday night? What do you
- 7:51Speaker 3: trying to what do you try to accomplish.
- 7:53Speaker 4: On and off the field? You know, uh, not really assigned?
- 7:56Speaker 5: Of course you want signed to be great, but like
- 7:58Speaker 5: on off the field, such teams, Uh, sudden changes. Who's
- 8:01Speaker 5: gonna make sure we all got to live on the
- 8:02Speaker 5: field and all those things like that. Of course the
- 8:04Speaker 5: game we want to be perfect execution and all, but
- 8:07Speaker 5: not gonna happen. But it's gonna be. It's just gonna
- 8:09Speaker 5: be good to see somebody besides us. You know, that's
- 8:10Speaker 5: by time, my all time. I'm tired of hitting that
- 8:12Speaker 5: same guy every day. Sure, Uh so they got to
- 8:14Speaker 5: be why that's why I wanted to play on Thursday
- 8:16Speaker 5: night next week because we've.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Had plenty of practice.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Now are you guys playing on Thursday night?
- 8:21Speaker 4: We are? Okay?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Thank you said that.
- 8:22Speaker 3: So that Madison Central Week one, that'll be right here
- 8:25Speaker 3: at Pirates Stadium Ray Rogers Stadium, and uh, that's so
- 8:28Speaker 3: that's a Thursday night.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Didn't know that, So I'm glad to know that.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So Thursday night ball game Madison Central, then you guys
- 8:33Speaker 3: go to Warren Central. That's always a big game for
- 8:35Speaker 3: you guys at Florence Clinton and then at Germantown and
- 8:38Speaker 3: then also, uh, Terry so didn't like you guys are
- 8:41Speaker 3: checking a week off this week.
- 8:41Speaker 5: We didn't be at Balie last week, and coach Thick
- 8:43Speaker 5: Penn called, I wanted to play, and I wanted to
- 8:47Speaker 5: play Terry, but we need to play a game that
- 8:48Speaker 5: we played for homecoming because I don't want play Reid
- 8:50Speaker 5: homecoming type deal and nothing against Terry whatsoever. Then they're
- 8:53Speaker 5: really good poking. I didn't want play. I don't want
- 8:54Speaker 5: to play a Division ball game for homecoming. So when
- 8:57Speaker 5: Terry wanted to play in another home game four, so
- 9:00Speaker 5: I guess they don't like that part of it. But
- 9:02Speaker 5: uh be a big test, you know that there's I
- 9:05Speaker 5: don't see baby weaknesses on that schedule there, so no.
- 9:07Speaker 2: No, it's it's it's one of the it's a seven
- 9:09Speaker 2: day schedule.
- 9:09Speaker 3: When I look across it, and of course then you
- 9:11Speaker 3: guys will play Meridian at Northwest, Pedal at Brandon and
- 9:14Speaker 3: then Oak Grove. You know this schedule, Like you said,
- 9:17Speaker 3: I mean, you play a schedule like this, and uh
- 9:19Speaker 3: obviously I would ask you what you think about weeks
- 9:21Speaker 3: off or nine, but obviously you're four playing it, playing games.
- 9:24Speaker 4: You know.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Early on I didn't care, and then then I was like,
- 9:27Speaker 5: why we need to break her once in a while.
- 9:28Speaker 5: But sometimes he's played the football game. You know that
- 9:31Speaker 5: that that week's a dead week, and it's kind of like,
- 9:34Speaker 5: you know, sometimes you need to break the middle of year.
- 9:35Speaker 5: I get all that, but just the kids want to
- 9:38Speaker 5: play football. We want to play football. So he called
- 9:40Speaker 5: no travel really no playing home games and no travel all.
- 9:43Speaker 5: But uh so it should be a good game for us,
- 9:45Speaker 5: in a good game, play homecoming for so wen't gotta
- 9:48Speaker 5: get a division game.
- 9:49Speaker 4: We did it.
- 9:50Speaker 3: So let's wrap it up with coach Patrick school that
- 9:52Speaker 3: we appreciate him. One more question for you, coach. You
- 9:55Speaker 3: guys got the place looking great, Phil looks good you
- 9:57Speaker 3: coming to campus. Everything looks really good. Friday night here
- 10:00Speaker 3: at Fridays here are fun, you know, with the led
- 10:02Speaker 3: lights and the music and uh the band, of course,
- 10:05Speaker 3: Pearl's got one of the best bands in the state,
- 10:06Speaker 3: one of the best bands in the region. Talk a
- 10:08Speaker 3: little bit about that experience, because it is a great
- 10:10Speaker 3: experience here on Fridays.
- 10:11Speaker 5: It's still a you know, a lot of times, the
- 10:13Speaker 5: bigger you get, the less you get of that feeling
- 10:16Speaker 5: of a missy football game. Right but here we're still
- 10:21Speaker 5: a community here, so we're gonna pack it out like that.
- 10:24Speaker 5: We do a good job with the Jimbo try on
- 10:25Speaker 5: the video board. The coach you golf does the good
- 10:27Speaker 5: job of getting the videos up there and you know,
- 10:29Speaker 5: getting a little Crayll pumped up that and we'll, uh,
- 10:32Speaker 5: we'll fill the stands up and get the smoke in
- 10:34Speaker 5: the air a little bit when the when the hamburger
- 10:35Speaker 5: is being cooked, and it's just on what football is
- 10:37Speaker 5: all about. You know, I've been to the stadiums on
- 10:39Speaker 5: Friday nights and it's like dead. It's not like that here,
- 10:42Speaker 5: especially if we can score some points and win some
- 10:44Speaker 5: ball games. Gets it gets better now.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And you're right, and you and I have had several
- 10:48Speaker 3: conversations on this because you I believe you tell me
- 10:50Speaker 3: you're one of the only coaches in the state.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Uh that's coached darnare at every classification, one of them.
- 10:55Speaker 4: I've been every class station there is now every.
- 10:56Speaker 3: CLASSICA one to seven. And there's something about that small
- 10:59Speaker 3: town on field right. Yeah, and it does No, don't
- 11:04Speaker 3: get me wrong. The bigger classifications sometimes depending on match up,
- 11:06Speaker 3: will while you. But you go into Uh we see
- 11:09Speaker 3: this when we call the state championship games. It's a
- 11:11Speaker 3: different feel for a three a game and a four
- 11:13Speaker 3: a game versus a six or seven.
- 11:15Speaker 5: It's important the whole community. Like you go to Litis
- 11:17Speaker 5: Wool and that shuts down right, I mean Lewis Willeknoxie
- 11:20Speaker 5: play and Seemi people and either one of the stay,
- 11:22Speaker 5: either one of those towns. It's playing away. It's just they,
- 11:24Speaker 5: I mean, that's what it's all about. That they eat
- 11:26Speaker 5: and breathe it up.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Uh.
- 11:28Speaker 5: You don't get ready mey big schools like yet, just
- 11:29Speaker 5: because it's so much to do, right. I remember going
- 11:32Speaker 5: Q years ago when they played in North against South
- 11:35Speaker 5: Panola two thousand people in the stands maybe for a
- 11:38Speaker 5: North half champion game, and they had been North Hafing
- 11:40Speaker 5: forever that time. I was like, well, they all lot
- 11:43Speaker 5: liver ride the street up at the bowl now either
- 11:44Speaker 5: doing this that's important.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Deal, that's amazing. That is amazing.
- 11:49Speaker 4: So you know, smaller towns and small community like yet,
- 11:52Speaker 4: I mean this football is what it's about.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about it. He's Patrick Schooler, head football coach.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Here Pearl Pirates.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Uh, they will play a preseason game up this weekend
- 12:00Speaker 3: or for Friday against Kenon and Thursday night kickoff. So
- 12:04Speaker 3: if you don't have anything to do on a Thursday night,
- 12:06Speaker 3: get over here to Pirates Stadium. They'll be taking on
- 12:07Speaker 3: the Madison Central Jaguars.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Coach.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Thank you for having you, appreciate it. We got to
- 12:11Speaker 3: take a time out. We're brought to you by the
