- 0:01When an individual undertakes tapasia, the concentration of
- 0:05conscious force, in any manner, it is certain that the results
- 0:10will bring about new powers for that individual, whether an
- 0:14accentuation of powers that the individual already possessed and
- 0:18exercised to some degree, or the development and expression of
- 0:23new powers that were latent but not actively present for that
- 0:28individual. The concentration may be in the
- 0:32physical realm, the vital realm, the mental realm, the psychic
- 0:36and spiritual realm, and the impact may manifest powers at
- 0:41any level of the being. The focus need not fall upon the
- 0:45rubric of yoga. When we see an athlete
- 0:51practicing to improve his physical, vital and mental
- 0:54conditioning, or we see an individual learning a new skill
- 0:59or science, or an artist perfecting his ability to
- 1:03observe and represent what he is observing, we are witnessing
- 1:08such a concentration of conscious force and results
- 1:12become obvious over time. The practice of yoga is a
- 1:18focused effort that has as its basis the turning of the
- 1:21individual concentration from pursuits that increase skills
- 1:26for external action to the focusing of the attention on
- 1:29spiritual growth and development.
- 1:32In his Yoga Sutras, Patanjali describes the 8 limbs of yoga
- 1:38practice and points out that as a result of carrying out these
- 1:42steps, various powers can and do manifest.
- 1:48Traditional yoga teachings discourage the use of these
- 1:51powers, as they tend to distract the seeker from the goal of
- 1:55liberation, from the illusion of the outer world and the
- 2:00attainment of oneness with the ultimate divine reality.
- 2:04Yet we can see that in the very practice of the yoga, the seeker
- 2:10is putting powers to work and concentrating on them, whether
- 2:14through the use of physical asanas, specialized breathing
- 2:18techniques, or use of powers of the mind to detach itself from
- 2:23the flow of thought and concentrate. 1 Pointedly on a
- 2:27specific subject or object. The evolution of consciousness
- 2:33and its progressive manifestation in ever more
- 2:35powerful forms implies that new powers of consciousness can and
- 2:41will manifest. Yoga acts as a concentrator of
- 2:45that evolutionary impetus. The development of new powers is
- 2:50a natural outgrowth of this evolution.
- 2:53Just as the mental power of the reasoning intellect manifested
- 2:57with the advent of the true mental force in the evolutionary
- 3:01cycle, so the next phase of evolution will clearly bring
- 3:05forth new forms of knowing and acting.
- 3:10The question then comes down to whether these powers act as a
- 3:13distraction or as a fulfillment of the evolutionary purpose.
- 3:20For those who see liberation or escape from the cycle of birth
- 3:23and death as the purpose, taking up, perfecting, and utilizing
- 3:28these powers is going to be seen as a distraction.
- 3:33For those dedicated to the perfection of life and the
- 3:37carrying out of the divine intention in the manifestation,
- 3:41accepting and using new powers of consciousness that emerge is
- 3:45part of the process. What needs to be avoided is the
- 3:50sense of personal aggrandizement, the growth of
- 3:53the ego and the development of any sense of personal ownership
- 3:57in the evolutionary process that is occurring.
- 4:01The powers need to be exercised, as with any power, at any level,
- 4:07with insight, discretion and right use.
- 4:12This is one of the messages delivered by Sri Krishna to
- 4:15Arjuna in the Bhagwad Gita. Observing the right time, place,
- 4:22circumstance and use of any power is part of the mastery
- 4:27that is asked of the seeker, Dr. Dalal observes.
- 4:32Quote In the East, most people have tended to consider
- 4:37supernormal powers or cities perfections, as they are called
- 4:42in India to be marks of spiritual attainment.
- 4:46However, spiritual teachers of a high order have regarded occult
- 4:50powers as inferior and unrelated to spiritual attainment.
- 4:56One who seeks occult powers, remarked Ramakrishna, is like
- 5:00someone who, being offered a boon by a king, asks for a
- 5:05pumpkin. Some even hold that on the
- 5:08spiritual path one must desist not only from seeking occult
- 5:12powers but also from using them, if one has acquired them.
- 5:17Regarding such an attitude, Sri Ovindo writes quote.
- 5:22The idea that yogans do not or ought not to use these powers.
- 5:27Having consciousness of things at a distance and intervening, I
- 5:32regard as an ascetic superstition.
- 5:35I believe that all Yogans who have these powers do use them
- 5:40whenever they find that they are called from within to do so.
- 5:44They may refrain if they think the use of a particular case is
- 5:49contrary to the divine will, or see that preventing 1 evil may
- 5:53be opening the door to a worse or for any other valid reason,
- 5:58but not from any general prohibitory rule.
- 6:02What is forbidden to everyone with a strong spiritual sense is
- 6:07to be a miracle monger, performing extraordinary things
- 6:11for show, for gain, for fame, out of vanity or pride.
