- 0:14Speaker 2: This is the best of Stu Gotson Company Live on
- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Mike Tannenba, I'm going to join us in about fifteen minutes.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Former general manager of the Jets at nan Verka to
- 0:26Speaker 1: join us an hour.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Number two is reel.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Goudieerras at studio with me today, Hulu Taylor in the
- 0:31Speaker 1: VIP room with bordop Ricardo, mikey A on the zoom,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the jetsign Gino Smith. We had this is the show
- 0:37Speaker 1: meeting right before the show. It goes like this, literally
- 0:42Speaker 1: right before, right.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Before the show. Where do you guys want to start? Now?
- 0:46Speaker 1: There are two Jet fans of the four of us, myself, Taylor,
- 0:50Speaker 1: mikey A and Izzy. Two of us are monster Jet fans.
- 0:55Speaker 1: We both said, the World Baseball Classic is real. Gudieirez said,
- 0:58Speaker 1: the World Baseball Class, Taylor said. Geno Smith to the Jets,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I said why He said, It's the biggest headline right
- 1:06Speaker 1: now in sports and so with that says, yeah, well, listen,
- 1:09Speaker 1: we all want to talk to you. I'm into the
- 1:11Speaker 1: World Baseball Classic. I am now, I am officially into it.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I am here for it.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I love it. I watched the game last night. I
- 1:18Speaker 3: was glued.
- 1:19Speaker 1: But I have to follow Taylor's lead here. So Taylor,
- 1:24Speaker 1: unload everything you have on Geno Smith. Going back to
- 1:28Speaker 1: the New York Jets, go.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I just thought it was interesting that the Jets had
- 1:32Speaker 4: a trade for Geno Smith because they knew if the
- 1:35Speaker 4: Raiders just released him and Geno Smith had his choice
- 1:38Speaker 4: of team, there's a very good chance Geno Smith is
- 1:42Speaker 4: not choosing the Jets.
- 1:43Speaker 3: He's not choosing the Jets.
- 1:45Speaker 5: You're right, Yeah, apparently the Vikings were very interested. And
- 1:49Speaker 5: that's not the place you want to be fighting with
- 1:51Speaker 5: with that coach and that wide.
- 1:53Speaker 1: That coach, right, but it's lying season, are we Certainly
- 1:56Speaker 1: the Vikings were interested at all. I mean, perhaps they
- 1:58Speaker 1: convinced the Jets they had to trade for Geno Smith.
- 2:02Speaker 5: It cost them twenty picks at the end of the draft,
- 2:05Speaker 5: literally to go down twenty picks from the sixth to
- 2:08Speaker 5: the seventh round to ensure that he was theirs.
- 2:10Speaker 6: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So Geno's going back to the Jets against his will.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Put it on the pole tailor. Is Geno going back
- 2:18Speaker 1: to the Jets against his will?
- 2:20Speaker 7: It's crazy because if you're the Jets, oh, okay, he
- 2:24Speaker 7: was pretty good elsewhere, the one spot where you think
- 2:27Speaker 7: he might be bad again is your team when you
- 2:29Speaker 7: bring him back.
- 2:31Speaker 4: It's almost like a person in the NFL draft around
- 2:36Speaker 4: the seventh round, where they're like, I hope a team
- 2:39Speaker 4: does not draft me here, so I become a free
- 2:42Speaker 4: agent and then I have my choice of team. Geno
- 2:45Speaker 4: Smith was hoping, hey, please let me go undrafted, and
- 2:49Speaker 4: then here come the Jets picking up mister irrelevant Geno Smith.
- 2:53Speaker 7: You guys do recall that he had a statement to
- 2:57Speaker 7: the Jets after he left, right when he was with Seattle.
- 3:01Speaker 8: He said, they wrote me off. I ain't right back.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Though, Let's go to Giants.
- 3:08Speaker 7: Yes, well, apparently the Jets wrote back. He just never
- 3:11Speaker 7: got it. It must have been lost in the mails somehow, and.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Now he's being forced to go back there.
- 3:19Speaker 5: I wonder how much animosity is to the logo, because
- 3:22Speaker 5: anybody that Gino hated when he was there is gone.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Like it's a new GM. There's probably seven GM since
- 3:29Speaker 5: whoever cut him. There's probably seven new coaches, there's a
- 3:33Speaker 5: whole new roster. So really it's just the owner.
- 3:36Speaker 8: It's the colorly one that you're like, it's the color,
- 3:38Speaker 8: and the.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Jets is always there, Mikey, It's just there. It just
- 3:42Speaker 3: sits there.
- 3:43Speaker 7: Is There's no other team in sports and the major
- 3:47Speaker 7: pro sports here in the States that have that color, right, Like,
- 3:50Speaker 7: Jets green.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Is just Jets green, right, it's unique to the Jets.
- 3:55Speaker 8: I believe.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yes, I'm pretty certain it is.
- 3:58Speaker 7: So I'm pretty sure that color in itself in PTSD
- 4:00Speaker 7: and he forgets how to throw a football.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Sue, We're going to see the worst of Geno Smith
- 4:07Speaker 1: there once he returns to the Jets.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Okay, So that's my question. Is this bad enough for us?
- 4:14Speaker 5: Is this what we wanted? Is he going to be
- 4:16Speaker 5: bad enough that Arch Manning, Dante Moore, one of those
- 4:19Speaker 5: two come on down at the top of the.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Next year's draft.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You're celebrating today, that's what you're doing. You're happy we
- 4:25Speaker 1: got Geno Smith, right instead of Kyler.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Yes, I think Kyler Murray is too talented that he
- 4:31Speaker 5: could just will them to six and seven wins.
- 4:35Speaker 6: Has shown you.
- 4:36Speaker 5: I think Gino has shown you he can be a
- 4:39Speaker 5: two win quarterback if you need him to be, because
- 4:41Speaker 5: he just did it.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I don't think you guys are even the worst team
- 4:44Speaker 4: in the division. I think the Dolphins are clearly worse
- 4:47Speaker 4: than the Jets right now.
- 4:48Speaker 7: Wow, you say that, and I want to agree with you.
- 4:51Speaker 7: But then I just say three names, and I'm like, Okay, Well,
- 4:54Speaker 7: Malik Willis, we all assume maybe at least on par
- 4:57Speaker 7: with Gino Smith, given the chance to start seventeen game,
- 5:00Speaker 7: he's better.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The upside of Malik Willis is better than what Gino
- 5:03Speaker 1: Smith is going to be.
- 5:03Speaker 7: And then you just give me Devon a chan and
- 5:05Speaker 7: Jalen wall At a waddle and I'm like, you know what,
- 5:08Speaker 7: there might be something there. I have no idea if
- 5:09Speaker 7: the offensive coordinator is any good, no idea if the
- 5:11Speaker 7: head coach is any good.
- 5:12Speaker 8: But if they can work around those three guys might
- 5:15Speaker 8: not be terrible.
- 5:15Speaker 1: If given the choice Dolphins are Jets, what do you
- 5:18Speaker 1: think Geno Smith would choose.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Oh, he's coming to South Florida. Yeah, just for the weather, yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 7: just from here? Yeah, but just for weather? No, yeah,
- 5:27Speaker 7: but there's no guarantee that Gino starts here. He's gonna
- 5:29Speaker 7: be the starting quarterback for the New York Jets next year.
- 5:31Speaker 7: You're saying, after Malik Willis signed, if Gino would become
- 5:34Speaker 7: a free agent, would he sign here as a backup
- 5:36Speaker 7: instead of starting for the Jets?
- 5:38Speaker 1: Well, a backup with a chance to start, because Malik
- 5:40Speaker 1: Willis doesn't really have much starting experience in the.
- 5:43Speaker 7: NFL strong maybe, yeah, yeah, because I think he just
- 5:46Speaker 7: experienced what it was like. First of all, he already
- 5:48Speaker 7: did the Jets thing right, and now he just got
- 5:49Speaker 7: off of a Raiders team which was so irrelevant, Like
- 5:52Speaker 7: he might as well have been a backup in terms
- 5:54Speaker 7: of like the way people talk about him, because.
- 5:56Speaker 8: Nobody talked about him.
- 5:57Speaker 9: Yea.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I gotta be honest, guys. We have six minutes more
- 5:59Speaker 1: on Gino Smith then I thought we were gonna have
- 6:01Speaker 1: true That's why you gotta trust the EP man I did.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I went to him.
- 6:04Speaker 8: That's why we call it the VIP room.
- 6:08Speaker 3: You have anything else on Geno or no?
- 6:10Speaker 4: But I'm dying to talk World Baseball Classic too?
- 6:13Speaker 8: Now wants to talk baseball?
- 6:15Speaker 9: Is he?
- 6:15Speaker 1: I cannot believe this because I watched the game last night,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and we were recording earlier today and we had ad
- 6:21Speaker 1: Nan Verk on and we had other you know, we
- 6:23Speaker 1: had guests on and we're talking baseball, Salakata and all
- 6:28Speaker 1: those are active and available.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Right now live wherever you get your podcast to.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Got some company that we do before the show, and
- 6:34Speaker 1: of course, God bless football.
- 6:36Speaker 3: We had on Chris Filika the Bear on. But Taylor
- 6:39Speaker 3: quick question.
- 6:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm always gonna ask you this, I feel like
- 6:41Speaker 7: until it really hammers him.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Salakata is who he is a former host for WFA.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yet Okay, yes, so he's okay, you're not doing that
- 6:49Speaker 1: to be mean?
- 6:49Speaker 7: No, No, that I'm saying is he doesn't do that, right,
- 6:52Speaker 7: What am I gonna do like the boss around like
- 6:54Speaker 7: Salakata Like, I don't know, that's a terrible I'm.
- 6:57Speaker 6: Gonna believe that he's doing it to be mean?
- 7:00Speaker 8: Really really no, no, no, wow.
- 7:02Speaker 7: I've heard the name so much that I know he
- 7:04Speaker 7: is a big deal somewhere. I just didn't know where.
- 7:07Speaker 7: I assume New York.
- 7:08Speaker 1: He was a big deal in New York on WFAN
- 7:10Speaker 1: until they fired him because they brought back Craig Carton
- 7:13Speaker 1: for the third time.
- 7:15Speaker 8: Okay, yes, all right, I'm all filled in.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Because they can't figure out how to do anything new
- 7:20Speaker 1: or different at WFAN, so they keep going back to
- 7:23Speaker 1: the well, that's what they keep doing, and they're well
- 7:25Speaker 1: as Craig Carton. So anyway, the World Baseball Classic, Taylor's
- 7:32Speaker 1: telling me earlier today. So this is about the United States.
- 7:36Speaker 1: It's about rooting for your country. And Taylor, well, his
- 7:40Speaker 1: fandom for the United States only goes so far, meaning
- 7:44Speaker 1: he will not root for Roman Anthony who hit a
- 7:47Speaker 1: three run shot, okay, because he plays for the Boston
- 7:50Speaker 1: Red Sox. And he was saying, along with Salagata, that
- 7:53Speaker 1: if the best player on their team is not American,
- 7:56Speaker 1: in Salth's case, it was Wan Soto. He was using
- 7:58Speaker 1: that as the example, you will root.
- 8:00Speaker 3: For Wan Soto's team over the United States team. Do
- 8:04Speaker 3: you agree with this?
- 8:05Speaker 9: Me?
- 8:06Speaker 8: I yes, a club over country, absolutely.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I get that idea.
- 8:10Speaker 7: Really, because you're you are tied in cheering for these
- 8:14Speaker 7: teams on the daily, if it's baseball, or you know,
- 8:17Speaker 7: every few days a week if it's basketball or soccer
- 8:20Speaker 7: and stuff like that, and you just fall in love
- 8:23Speaker 7: with those players in particular, like if I was a
- 8:26Speaker 7: Spurs fan, and I've got Wemby and it's the Olympics,
- 8:30Speaker 7: and I want to see Wemby absolutely murder some teams.
- 8:34Speaker 7: I want to see him do well. The US has
- 8:36Speaker 7: had his chance. If my favorite guy is the reason
- 8:39Speaker 7: the US loses, I'm proud of that, because again, club
- 8:42Speaker 7: over country.
- 8:43Speaker 1: So if Spurs fans root for Wemby and his country
- 8:46Speaker 1: in the Olympics, you're okay with that?
- 8:48Speaker 8: I am.
- 8:48Speaker 7: I think it's a more extreme American I think it's
- 8:51Speaker 7: more extreme because it's the Olympics versus the World Baseball Classic,
- 8:54Speaker 7: so you're not going to see as many people say
- 8:56Speaker 7: that out loud.
- 8:57Speaker 8: But I think if you went and took a camera,
- 8:59Speaker 8: that's a great idea.
- 9:00Speaker 7: Took a camera over to San Antonio during the Olympics
- 9:02Speaker 7: and talk to some Spurs fans, They'll say, go Franz.
- 9:04Speaker 1: All right, So maybe I can buy into that. But
- 9:07Speaker 1: how about the fact if you're rooting for team US
- 9:09Speaker 1: set okay, and you're a Yankees fit, you're not going
- 9:13Speaker 1: to root for Roman Anthony because he's a red sock.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I mean, see that.
- 9:17Speaker 7: One's tough rooting against the team or rooting against a player.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Either rooting for Team USA or you're not. What are
- 9:24Speaker 3: we doing here?
- 9:24Speaker 8: I let Taylor explain that, just to be clear.
- 9:27Speaker 4: When it comes to Roman Anthony, the situation is he
- 9:30Speaker 4: was first and second and I believe either no outs
- 9:33Speaker 4: or one out. I was just rooting for him to
- 9:36Speaker 4: get a single, maybe get a walk, keep the line moving. Instead,
- 9:39Speaker 4: he had a three run home run, and I was like, man,
- 9:42Speaker 4: that kind of stinks. I wish it was somebody else
- 9:44Speaker 4: that hit the home run. But then you're looking at
- 9:45Speaker 4: the list of guys and it's like, I don't want
- 9:47Speaker 4: to see Alex Pregman. I hate Alex Pregman. Ideally it
- 9:51Speaker 4: would have been Aaron Judge just hitting another.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Magic at bat. Yeah, but you can't pick and choose
- 9:55Speaker 3: these things.
- 9:56Speaker 7: If you either had a magic at bat, it would
- 9:58Speaker 7: be great if you had a magic at bat, but
- 10:00Speaker 7: we don't.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You have to root for the United States, even if
- 10:03Speaker 1: it means rooting for a red sock.
- 10:04Speaker 7: You know, my biggest takeaway about Roman Anthony is what
- 10:06Speaker 7: his name is?
- 10:07Speaker 6: Backward.
- 10:07Speaker 3: He's awesome.
- 10:09Speaker 7: His name is backward. It should be Anthony Roman. What
- 10:11Speaker 7: do you got, Taylor? I like Roman Anthony. I think
- 10:12Speaker 7: it's a better baseball name.
- 10:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 4: So part of the Roman Anthony thing too is I
- 10:18Speaker 4: could see where this is going and he is the
- 10:20Speaker 4: next like twenty years.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Of baseball, yes, right, And he's not on your team.
- 10:25Speaker 7: Yeah yeah, I mean, but he's on your US team
- 10:28Speaker 7: and you might might as well cheer for him when
- 10:30Speaker 7: you can, and when he hits a three run homer
- 10:32Speaker 7: that you're just like, man, I wish it was just
- 10:34Speaker 7: a single.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Put it on the pole tailor? Is Roman Anthony a
- 10:36Speaker 1: future Dodger? Is every good player a future Dodger? Yes,
- 10:42Speaker 1: Mikey Taylor.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Don't you want to yell at Red Sox fans who
- 10:45Speaker 5: are not rooting for the US because it's Aaron Judge, Like.
- 10:48Speaker 6: Don't you want to be like, oh, put it away.
- 10:50Speaker 6: It's it's the US. You should be rooting for it.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Let's come together.
- 10:53Speaker 6: I get you hating him in major leagues, but this
- 10:55Speaker 6: is the US.
- 10:57Speaker 4: This is this is like that meme of the Bloods
- 10:59Speaker 4: in the crypt coming together and holding up their flags together.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I don't want to be united in the streets with
- 11:05Speaker 4: the Red Sox fans going into the ninth inning, Garrett
- 11:09Speaker 4: Whitlock was coming in and it was like a win
- 11:11Speaker 4: win for me? Is he because he's coming in for
- 11:13Speaker 4: the save. And I'm like, either the USA is gonna
- 11:16Speaker 4: win this game or the Red Sox closer is gonna
- 11:18Speaker 4: blow the game, and I'll be able to live with
- 11:20Speaker 4: either way.
- 11:21Speaker 8: Yeah, so you want.
- 11:22Speaker 6: What the Bloods and Crips think.
- 11:23Speaker 3: This is nothing like the Bloods and Crips, by the way.
- 11:26Speaker 8: Anyway.
- 11:26Speaker 7: You want them to succeed as a team, but you
- 11:28Speaker 7: don't want your rivals to be the reason for that success.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Go ahead and let it be Aaron Judge, Let it
- 11:34Speaker 7: be whatever Yankee you want. Even let it be some
- 11:36Speaker 7: other guy who doesn't play for you within your division.
- 11:40Speaker 8: Just like you said, just move it along, don't hit
- 11:42Speaker 8: a three run homers.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So, Taylor, what if all the Bloods and the Crips
- 11:45Speaker 1: from the United States got together and they formed a
- 11:48Speaker 1: team and they were playing and fighting against the Bloods.
- 11:51Speaker 3: And the Crips from Japan. I mean, who are you
- 11:53Speaker 3: rooting for? Huh huh? That one?
- 11:58Speaker 4: I would go country to.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Throw in a team or something that wears all white.
- 12:05Speaker 7: You got the Red, the White, the Blue, Boom Super American.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Can I give you one other way to possibly think
- 12:10Speaker 5: about a tailor Roman Anthony is gonna be great, at
- 12:13Speaker 5: least be great when I have a rooting interest too. Like,
- 12:16Speaker 5: imagine he goes zero for five with five strikeouts, and
- 12:19Speaker 5: then he goes and faces the Yankees and he's three
- 12:21Speaker 5: run home runs.
- 12:21Speaker 6: You're like, you couldn't have done that when I care.
- 12:23Speaker 6: This is the one done that when it was for me.
- 12:25Speaker 1: This is the one opportunity you have to root for
- 12:28Speaker 1: Roman Anthony. He's playing for your team, Taylor.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I'd rather have the card in my back pocket. When
- 12:33Speaker 4: the Yankees are playing the Red Sox and Roman Anthony
- 12:35Speaker 4: is doing something, I'm like, hey, remember that time he
- 12:37Speaker 4: went oh for four in the World Baseball Classic and
- 12:39Speaker 4: he and we lost to Japan.
- 12:43Speaker 3: You're saving cards. I like it. I'm so proud of you.
- 12:45Speaker 3: I mean, you're thinking way ahead, my man.
- 12:47Speaker 7: All very interesting, Not the World Baseball Classic topic I
- 12:50Speaker 7: wanted to talk about.
- 12:54Speaker 3: What was it?
- 12:55Speaker 8: It was Randy A. Rose Arena and Cal Rally.
- 13:00Speaker 4: So, Randy Rose Arena comes to the comes to the plates.
- 13:03Speaker 7: This is the show meeting Okay, live on the air, Yes,
- 13:07Speaker 7: opening segment, Yep.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Randy Rose Arena comes to the plate and he tries
- 13:10Speaker 4: to shake Cal Rawley's hand m cal Raley's catching. Yep,
- 13:15Speaker 4: cal Raley refused, which was already kind of weird, but
- 13:19Speaker 4: then you think about it. Their teammates on the Mariners.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Yep, not teammates this week though.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Yeah, And when and when Randy rose Arena was asked
- 13:26Speaker 4: about it in the post game, he told cal Raley
- 13:29Speaker 4: he could bleep off and go to hell and he
- 13:32Speaker 4: could shove it straight up his bleep.
- 13:34Speaker 7: He said it, well, he tried to say it in
- 13:37Speaker 7: multiple languages.
- 13:38Speaker 9: Uh.
- 13:39Speaker 7: He was so clear and thorough about his fu uh
- 13:44Speaker 7: to cal Raleigh that some people.
- 13:46Speaker 8: Are even wondering is it serious?
- 13:49Speaker 7: Is it some sort of a joke between the two,
- 13:51Speaker 7: because rose Arena, who's the other catcher, Taylor, not cal Rally.
- 13:55Speaker 8: But there was another catcher.
- 13:57Speaker 7: Maybe it wasn't a US catcher, may it was a
- 13:58Speaker 7: different team, but I think it was a US catcher
- 14:00Speaker 7: that rose Araina went to do this the shake can
- 14:02Speaker 7: and and he snubbed them also, But then this time
- 14:04Speaker 7: it was his own teammate with the Mariner, so maybe
- 14:07Speaker 7: he thought it would be him. And it's just like,
- 14:10Speaker 7: especially if you're the US team that doesn't really take
- 14:12Speaker 7: this so seriously, right, You're saying.
- 14:14Speaker 8: To the world that these other guys are super emotional
- 14:16Speaker 8: about it.
- 14:16Speaker 7: We are not go ahead and break those little unwritten
- 14:18Speaker 7: rules and shake your teammates hand or currently your opposition's hand,
- 14:21Speaker 7: but you're Seattle Mariner's teammates hand. It seemed pretty I
- 14:26Speaker 7: don't know, it didn't seem like the right moment to
- 14:28Speaker 7: be stubborn like that, to be a.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Jerk, like if you're cal Riley. So I think it's
- 14:32Speaker 1: the exact moments. I mean, this is what the World
- 14:34Speaker 1: Baseball Classic. Playing for your country is all about.
- 14:38Speaker 8: It not for the US team.
- 14:40Speaker 1: When you're back in Seattle, then you can hug all
- 14:42Speaker 1: you wants. I mean, this is country versus country.
- 14:44Speaker 7: I think there's something else there. I think there is something.
- 14:47Speaker 7: What I've read sort of bits and pieces of the
- 14:49Speaker 7: Seattle Clubhouse is not great and maybe they just don't
- 14:53Speaker 7: like each other because the Rose Arena is a character.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Shame on him for trying to shake people's hands on
- 14:59Speaker 1: opposing teams.
- 15:00Speaker 5: I mean, seriously, I like that cal Raley is taking
- 15:03Speaker 5: it as seriously as I am, or more serious.
- 15:05Speaker 6: That's what he should be doing. That's how we get there.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I wish Tarek scuball would care a little.
- 15:12Speaker 6: I'm with you on that one, Tayler.
- 15:14Speaker 7: That's my whole point though, Like those are the two
- 15:17Speaker 7: opposite ends of the spectrum. Trek Scouble can't even won't
- 15:20Speaker 7: even get a second start out there for this team,
- 15:23Speaker 7: and you've got cal Rally refusing to shake somebody's hand, Like,
- 15:27Speaker 7: what does that have to do with anything?
- 15:30Speaker 8: Is it a superstition?
- 15:31Speaker 7: Are you going to look bad to your to your
- 15:33Speaker 7: World Baseball Classic teammates?
- 15:34Speaker 3: I don't really, it's competition.
- 15:35Speaker 4: I mean my only thought process there is that maybe
- 15:39Speaker 4: Pine tar went into play and he just didn't want
- 15:41Speaker 4: to shake his.
- 15:42Speaker 7: Hands and find, hey, show the fist and then say, hey,
- 15:45Speaker 7: don't actually touch me.
- 15:46Speaker 6: Boom. That's it.
- 15:47Speaker 8: That's it.
- 15:48Speaker 4: On the topic of Tarik's scooble, Yeah, get this guy
- 15:52Speaker 4: out of that dugout, Get this guy away from a mic.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Every time he talks, he makes me more angry because
- 15:59Speaker 4: he said he try to make it work, but just
- 16:01Speaker 4: could it. Just say it's a contract year and that's
- 16:05Speaker 4: why you're not playing. Don't pretend like you have this
- 16:08Speaker 4: impossible task you were given. If Tarrek Scouble went to
- 16:12Speaker 4: his agent and went to the Tigers and was like, Hey,
- 16:14Speaker 4: I'm pitching in the final. If I'm pitching in the semifinal,
- 16:17Speaker 4: figure out how you're gonna adjust my schedule from there.
- 16:20Speaker 4: They're gonna bend over backwards for him.
- 16:21Speaker 7: If this was the Olympics, do you think he would
- 16:23Speaker 7: go and start another game, pitch another game.
- 16:27Speaker 8: Probably could probably make his hand man shake his hand.
- 16:30Speaker 8: Cal Rally, this is just a next time.
- 16:32Speaker 3: I would say cal Raley is more American than everyone else.
- 16:34Speaker 8: Well because his name is raleyh Yes, North Carolina cal Raley.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Yes, big dumper, Cali, big dumper. Yeah. What's the T
- 16:40Speaker 3: and tarrek stan for Taylor Trader? Yeah, trade?
- 16:44Speaker 8: What's more American than taking a big dump?
- 16:46Speaker 3: What's the S?
- 16:47Speaker 4: And schoolble not stand for not stars and trust? Yeah.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 16:54Speaker 2: Live weekday said three pm Eastern twelve pm Pacific on
- 16:59Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Ad Nan Vurk going to join us in about fifteen minutes.
- 17:06Speaker 1: We'll talk some movies, talk some baseball. He's got a
- 17:09Speaker 1: red carpet event coming up for the Oscars. That's right, Yes,
- 17:14Speaker 1: big into the movies Adnam. Is he, I want to
- 17:16Speaker 1: play some sound for you, and by the way, eight seven,
- 17:19Speaker 1: seven ninety nine on Fox, if you'd like to call
- 17:21Speaker 1: in here. I do have the Bleacher Reports top one
- 17:23Speaker 1: hundred NBA players of all time to finish.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Out the show.
- 17:27Speaker 8: Not all of them, just ten of them, just.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Ten at a time. But is he.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I want to play some sound for you and get
- 17:34Speaker 1: your thoughts. Steve Kerr, I'm not certain that anyone was
- 17:37Speaker 1: asking or caring, but he said it anyway. Steve Kerr
- 17:41Speaker 1: talking about a shortened season next year in the NBA.
- 17:47Speaker 10: I know this will not be a popular opinion in
- 17:51Speaker 10: the league office, but I will continue to say it
- 17:55Speaker 10: because it's obvious we need to play fewer games. We
- 17:57Speaker 10: need to take ten games off the schedule. I think
- 18:01Speaker 10: it would be great for the league. And I get it,
- 18:04Speaker 10: it's revenue and you'd have to get everybody to agree
- 18:06Speaker 10: to take a little less money, and that's a really
- 18:10Speaker 10: hard thing to do. But what I know about the league,
- 18:13Speaker 10: about coaching, about how hard it is to play the
- 18:16Speaker 10: modern game with the pace and the space, I think
- 18:19Speaker 10: it would be a more competitive and healthier league if
- 18:23Speaker 10: we played fewer games.
- 18:25Speaker 7: How do you feel about that is quick question that
- 18:27Speaker 7: we're not strolling down Audio Avenue.
- 18:29Speaker 8: We're just standing at a corner listening.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Yeah, this is the corner. Yes we are. We're stuck
- 18:33Speaker 3: at this house.
- 18:34Speaker 6: We are not moving.
- 18:35Speaker 7: Yes, good, because I got a lot to say, Eric,
- 18:38Speaker 7: I feel like I heard stan van Gundy say this.
- 18:40Speaker 7: I definitely hurt stan Van Gundy say this in terms
- 18:42Speaker 7: of one of the issues that we have today is
- 18:45Speaker 7: that the answer to the game being harder and being
- 18:49Speaker 7: played faster, and people being more athletic and having to
- 18:53Speaker 7: cover more space is practice less, right, save their bodies.
- 18:58Speaker 7: At other times, I've been saying this for a minute,
- 19:01Speaker 7: and conversations with you know, by trainers or whatever, you
- 19:07Speaker 7: should if you are capable of playing at this pace
- 19:11Speaker 7: regularly on the actual floor, you can practice at this
- 19:15Speaker 7: pace on the actual floor. You can still do things
- 19:18Speaker 7: to avoid injury, like maybe not as much contact, maybe
- 19:21Speaker 7: you sort of legislate that, but you're still playing at
- 19:24Speaker 7: a fast pace. You still need to condition your body
- 19:28Speaker 7: for how you play, because if you're not doing that regularly, well,
- 19:32Speaker 7: the way you play is different than what your body
- 19:35Speaker 7: is conditioned for. Therefore, here come the soft tissue injuries.
- 19:39Speaker 7: Here come perhaps if you're super fatigued and not running
- 19:42Speaker 7: or playing correctly, some non impact you know, ligament damage
- 19:46Speaker 7: and that's the type of stuff that again, if you
- 19:49Speaker 7: were conditioning your body, preparing yourself for it better, then
- 19:52Speaker 7: it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I disagree
- 19:55Speaker 7: with Steve Kerr and that we lead. I think we
- 19:58Speaker 7: would be better off with le game.
- 20:00Speaker 8: Sure.
- 20:00Speaker 7: I think it is the answer to the league's issues
- 20:04Speaker 7: with player health and and you know, participation.
- 20:07Speaker 3: I do not.
- 20:08Speaker 7: I think it's the way they train when they're not playing,
- 20:11Speaker 7: because if you think about it's toue right, like why
- 20:14Speaker 7: would training be the same, But then the game is different.
- 20:18Speaker 7: You're supposed to train the way you play and play,
- 20:21Speaker 7: and if you're not practicing, then things that come up
- 20:24Speaker 7: in games, your body's not going to get used to,
- 20:26Speaker 7: more injuries are going to happen. It seems pretty cut
- 20:29Speaker 7: and dry, like you can't say that we can't practice
- 20:31Speaker 7: at this speed.
- 20:32Speaker 8: Of course you can you play at this speed.
- 20:33Speaker 1: So is he saying no to what Steve Gerr is suggesting,
- 20:36Speaker 1: And he is saying no, keep it at eighty two
- 20:38Speaker 1: and practice harder.
- 20:41Speaker 8: And when I did hear Stam say this.
- 20:43Speaker 7: It sounded kind of you know, pat riley ish you
- 20:45Speaker 7: have to do, but it is the case. Bigger, faster,
- 20:48Speaker 7: stronger creates more demands on your body, and it's not
- 20:53Speaker 7: impossible demands.
- 20:54Speaker 8: They're just not.
- 20:55Speaker 7: You just have to train for it, have to prepare
- 20:57Speaker 7: for it a little bit better because you're not You
- 20:58Speaker 7: can just get that out the window. Like Steve, They're
- 21:01Speaker 7: never going to shorten the amount of games. It's just
- 21:02Speaker 7: not going to happen. There's always going to be other
- 21:04Speaker 7: people that'll give you an entirely different case, just like
- 21:07Speaker 7: I am to say now now, we don't need to
- 21:08Speaker 7: give up that money.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I think the public in general just thinks, hey, you're
- 21:12Speaker 1: paid a lot of money to play eighty two basketball
- 21:14Speaker 1: games per year. They don't factor in the travel, they
- 21:17Speaker 1: don't factor in the pace of play. I'm not certain
- 21:19Speaker 1: they should factor those things in. They are sitting on
- 21:21Speaker 1: their couches and they're like, hey, five days a week,
- 21:24Speaker 1: I gotta go to work. Sometimes I work two jobs.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Sometimes I work on the weekends. You guys are getting
- 21:29Speaker 1: paid fifteen twenty twenty five fifty million dollars go play
- 21:33Speaker 1: eighty two basketball games a year. I don't care if
- 21:35Speaker 1: your body hurts.
- 21:36Speaker 7: But then there are still the people who will sort
- 21:39Speaker 7: of side with the players and say no, like I
- 21:41Speaker 7: get it because I'm watching the game and it's way
- 21:44Speaker 7: faster than it was before. And there are way more guys,
- 21:47Speaker 7: you know, with their eyes at the rim and a
- 21:49Speaker 7: lot more physicality. You've got like guys like Bam out
- 21:52Speaker 7: of Bayo who will just absolutely maul you in the paint.
- 21:55Speaker 7: But still you got to chase them out there because
- 21:57Speaker 7: he's going to take a three as well. Like it's
- 21:58Speaker 7: impossible to do that and say, Okay, everything's like it
- 22:02Speaker 7: was in the past.
- 22:03Speaker 8: It just wasn't, so you again have to prepare yourself
- 22:05Speaker 8: for it. And you know, they keep adding, this isn't.
- 22:09Speaker 7: People don't talk about this part, right, Stu, How long
- 22:11Speaker 7: ago was it when there were far less games in
- 22:13Speaker 7: the playoffs? Right, you didn't have the seven game stories
- 22:16Speaker 7: every single time. Yes, playoffs are much longer now, Yeah,
- 22:19Speaker 7: and they're more spread, and so yeah, you just got
- 22:21Speaker 7: to You're gonna have to deal and you're gonna have
- 22:23Speaker 7: to prepare your body, and you're gonna these players who
- 22:25Speaker 7: probably have the sympathy of people who have no idea
- 22:28Speaker 7: what it's like to be a professional athlete, are going
- 22:30Speaker 7: to have to admit that, Yeah, we could try a
- 22:31Speaker 7: little harder.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Just from a fan standpoint, you know, the physicality, the
- 22:37Speaker 1: the staying in shape, the practice, how you play, all
- 22:39Speaker 1: that stuff sounds good. But I would like a shorter
- 22:42Speaker 1: season because the way you create stakes, the way you
- 22:44Speaker 1: create urgency, is by not playing eighty two games. Give
- 22:48Speaker 1: me a fifty game sprint. I'm good with that. Same
- 22:51Speaker 1: with baseball. By the way, you know, you lose me
- 22:54Speaker 1: game ninety four of the regular we're playing ninety four
- 22:57Speaker 1: bleep in regular season baseball games. Give me one hundreds
- 23:01Speaker 1: and let's call it a day and get to the playoffs.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I just want more stakes, and I want urgency, and
- 23:06Speaker 1: I want this stuff the regular season in these leagues
- 23:09Speaker 1: to feel the way the NFL feels during the regular season,
- 23:12Speaker 1: the way college football feels during the regular season, where
- 23:15Speaker 1: every week feels like it's a playoff week.
- 23:18Speaker 7: The best case for shortening the season is not going
- 23:23Speaker 7: to be player injuries, because they'll, you know, they'll do
- 23:27Speaker 7: what I just did. They'll give you science and they'll
- 23:28Speaker 7: give you a bunch of reasons as to why the players'
- 23:31Speaker 7: bodies can handle it.
- 23:32Speaker 8: The best reason for it.
- 23:34Speaker 7: Is to say the product will be better if you
- 23:37Speaker 7: cut out let's just say twelve games, fifteen, sixteen games,
- 23:41Speaker 7: and then introduce what is that, maybe twenty to thirty
- 23:45Speaker 7: more practice days.
- 23:47Speaker 8: It's going to look better when.
- 23:48Speaker 7: They actually do play in theory, right, And so if
- 23:51Speaker 7: you say to the NBA, hey, the problem is people
- 23:54Speaker 7: aren't tuning in and you want people to tune in.
- 23:57Speaker 7: How do you get them to tune in? A. You
- 23:58Speaker 7: know their best player is going to play number one,
- 24:00Speaker 7: but B when they do, it's going to look amazing.
- 24:02Speaker 7: It's going to look like, you know, some of the
- 24:04Speaker 7: best basketball you've ever seen. It's a bubble basketball, if
- 24:07Speaker 7: you will. And so I think that's the best case
- 24:10Speaker 7: that they would have. But it's a lot of pressure
- 24:11Speaker 7: then on these teams to then perform if they do
- 24:14Speaker 7: shorten the amount of game busy.
- 24:15Speaker 1: We're we're at about sixty two games right now. We
- 24:18Speaker 1: know the teams that are good, we know the teams
- 24:20Speaker 1: that are contenders. I don't need another twenty games to
- 24:22Speaker 1: spell out that san Antonio is really really good and
- 24:24Speaker 1: as a shot at winning it, especially in the.
- 24:26Speaker 7: NBA where you've got teams that announce from the very beginning,
- 24:29Speaker 7: like after ten games, it's all right, shut it down
- 24:31Speaker 7: tenk time, you know, So it usually works out where
- 24:34Speaker 7: you can tell, all right, these are the six teams
- 24:36Speaker 7: that are definitely going to be on the top. These
- 24:38Speaker 7: are the four teams or five teams that are fighting
- 24:40Speaker 7: for playoff or play in.
- 24:41Speaker 8: And then everybody else is just out of it.
- 24:43Speaker 7: And so unless they change that, yeah, you're right, you
- 24:46Speaker 7: can get to a point in January and you're like, yeah,
- 24:49Speaker 7: I know who the playoff teams are.
- 24:51Speaker 1: I will get to Kelly in North Carolina in a second.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I used Taylor, board Out, Ricardo, Mikey as a gauge
- 24:57Speaker 1: for the audience and you know, just in terms of
- 24:59Speaker 1: their int and if they're shaking their heads, if they're
- 25:01Speaker 1: into the conversation.
- 25:03Speaker 3: But I have lost them. I have lost Bordot, Ricardo,
- 25:06Speaker 3: I have lost Taylor. I have no idea what's going on.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Breaking news from Fox Sports Stu.
- 25:14Speaker 4: The ACCED Tournament is underway. Fifteen seed Pittsburgh is moving
- 25:19Speaker 4: on beating Stanford. Abuco Corey gave Stanford a one point
- 25:22Speaker 4: lead with twenty four seconds left. Chaotic lass possession for
- 25:25Speaker 4: pitt The Marco Minor missed the floater with a second left,
- 25:28Speaker 4: followed as miss and five and thirteen. Pitt is moving
- 25:32Speaker 4: on to the second day of.
- 25:33Speaker 3: The ACC Tournamentill, that's what's going on.
- 25:35Speaker 7: I thought it was a great conversation, Fundy.
- 25:39Speaker 8: We talked about the future of the NBA.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Uh huh, yes, yeah, but Taylor didn't say a word. Yeah,
- 25:44Speaker 3: go ahead.
- 25:45Speaker 5: Is that you know I'm not the NBA guy. But
- 25:48Speaker 5: that was far more interesting than whatever Taylor is.
- 25:50Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 25:51Speaker 8: Well.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Now I got a side with Taylor because this is
- 25:52Speaker 1: what March is all about, even though he wasn't listening
- 25:55Speaker 1: and doing a.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Job I do.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Sound'm so proud of you. I do side with Taylor.
- 25:59Speaker 1: He is glued to a game. This is what March
- 26:00Speaker 1: is whole about. Stanford was a bubble team and now
- 26:03Speaker 1: the rout of the tournament and pitt is three games away,
- 26:06Speaker 1: three wins, I think away from punching a ticket to
- 26:10Speaker 1: the March madness.
- 26:11Speaker 8: How about that?
- 26:11Speaker 4: And in twenty minutes we have Syracuse and SMU tipping off.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Next. Oh that's a big one.
- 26:16Speaker 8: Classic ACC Stanford and SMU.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yeah, classic.
- 26:21Speaker 7: I'm instigued by what Kelly in North Carolina wants to
- 26:24Speaker 7: talk about here too.
- 26:25Speaker 3: By the way, let's take the call here, Kelly. Go ahead.
- 26:27Speaker 3: You're on Fox Sports Radio.
- 26:30Speaker 11: See with all the NFL news that Magic City Night
- 26:33Speaker 11: was canceled.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Yeah, they snuck it in. You notice that. Huh? Yes, yeah,
- 26:40Speaker 3: you seem upset about it.
- 26:42Speaker 11: I'm not upset. I don't like basketball, but I figured
- 26:45Speaker 11: it was something Iusy would be interested in when everyone
- 26:49Speaker 11: was talking about That's.
- 26:51Speaker 3: What I'm talking about. You know what calls for yes
- 26:53Speaker 3: because no, no, no.
- 26:54Speaker 1: This is a good way because we don't talk about
- 26:56Speaker 1: any of the things even though I'm trying today that
- 26:59Speaker 1: Israel wants to talk about. And so the callers calling
- 27:01Speaker 1: in and asking Israel questions about things that he might.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Be interested in is a great way of doing it.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Like Taylor, you have the love call in producers.
- 27:12Speaker 8: Hey, is he take this?
- 27:13Speaker 2: Go?
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yes?
- 27:15Speaker 8: I think thank you, Kelly.
- 27:16Speaker 7: Once again, I think it is funny that they canceled
- 27:19Speaker 7: the Magic City Night. Adam Silver talked about it, you know,
- 27:23Speaker 7: referenced sponsors a lot, which goes.
- 27:25Speaker 8: To show you that you know people who pay for.
- 27:29Speaker 7: You know, their products to be on the court or
- 27:32Speaker 7: anywhere with the Atlanta Hawks. Probably don't want to be
- 27:35Speaker 7: affiliated with strip club night. And again, I'm not gonna
- 27:38Speaker 7: go as far as even somebody like Luke Cornett who
- 27:41Speaker 7: says it's disrespectful to women.
- 27:43Speaker 3: I believe.
- 27:44Speaker 7: I choose to believe that everybody participating or working there
- 27:47Speaker 7: is working on their own right. They choose to work there,
- 27:50Speaker 7: and they're doing their job, and it's all great. It
- 27:52Speaker 7: has nothing to do with the actual people working there.
- 27:54Speaker 7: It has to do with what their product is to,
- 27:56Speaker 7: you know, younger children and family members who maybe don't
- 27:59Speaker 7: want to not necessarily even see it, just think about it.
- 28:02Speaker 7: I don't want to have to explain to my kid, Oh,
- 28:04Speaker 7: it's a strip club that women dance over there, blah
- 28:06Speaker 7: blah blah blah blah. It's different than a Pride night,
- 28:08Speaker 7: entirely different than a Pride night, because what you're explaining
- 28:10Speaker 7: is that they're a different group of people that are alive.
- 28:13Speaker 7: That's entirely different than what people do for work. And so, yeah,
- 28:17Speaker 7: I think it was the right move to get rid
- 28:19Speaker 7: of it, to sort of cancel it. The Hawks can
- 28:22Speaker 7: say it was going to be family friendly all you want,
- 28:25Speaker 7: but at the heart of it, it's still a strip
- 28:26Speaker 7: club night. And so Yeah, it's probably not great for
- 28:28Speaker 7: the kids to be around that.
- 28:30Speaker 4: So we're taking gambling money, we're taking alcohol money. But
- 28:33Speaker 4: where we draw the line, no strip clubs.
- 28:36Speaker 7: It seems absurd. You're seriously saying that that's the same thing.
- 28:41Speaker 7: You're saying that we as a civilization, as a community,
- 28:45Speaker 7: have put alcohol and strippers on the same plane, Like
- 28:49Speaker 7: we've normalized alcohol all the time. Obviously, but they're not
- 28:53Speaker 7: or partially naked people dancing while I'm drinking.
- 28:57Speaker 1: I mean, you're honoring an institution inside of the city
- 29:00Speaker 1: of it last.
- 29:00Speaker 7: Yet an institution for adults only, and really institution the
- 29:04Speaker 7: kids aren't allowed it.
- 29:05Speaker 3: I mean kids can't gamble either, and they can't drink.
- 29:07Speaker 7: I mean, okay, and it's probably something you can have
- 29:11Speaker 7: a more reasonable conversation with with your kid who probably
- 29:15Speaker 7: doesn't even have money to gamble.
- 29:17Speaker 6: Right.
- 29:17Speaker 3: The strip club is a hard one to explain away.
- 29:19Speaker 5: At the basketball game, I thought this was a chicken
- 29:23Speaker 5: wing establishment.
- 29:27Speaker 3: And that's it. You're like, oh, what's the problem.
- 29:32Speaker 7: Like I said, when it happened, I wasn't outraged by it.
- 29:35Speaker 7: I said, hey, you can't complain about other stuff if
- 29:38Speaker 7: this is what you're doing. That's all I'm saying, don't
- 29:39Speaker 7: complain about other stuff if you're doing this. So I
- 29:42Speaker 7: wasn't outraged by it, nor am I saying it's the
- 29:45Speaker 7: greatest thing in the world.
- 29:46Speaker 8: It was pretty obvious that they had.
- 29:47Speaker 6: To do this.
- 29:48Speaker 1: No, I understand what you're saying about the parents and
- 29:50Speaker 1: trying to explain.
- 29:51Speaker 3: It to the kids.
- 29:52Speaker 1: They go to a basketball game and a strip club
- 29:54Speaker 1: breaks out, But how do you explain to your kid
- 29:55Speaker 1: that you're putting an in game barlight it. I almost
- 29:58Speaker 1: Curt's there, but it game parlay on your phone.
- 30:01Speaker 7: Dad's trying to make some more money for you so
- 30:05Speaker 7: I can get you new sneakers easy easy, and.
- 30:09Speaker 4: If it loses, Christmas is canceled.
- 30:14Speaker 7: Let's figure out how much Dad is betting if we
- 30:16Speaker 7: want to ask that question. But if it's just a
- 30:17Speaker 7: few bucks, as it's just a little fun and game.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Song, Listen, I'm putting a mortgage bed in right now.
- 30:22Speaker 8: I don't know if mom knows about that. Let's ask her.
- 30:24Speaker 6: If we don't win it, I might need an application.
- 30:27Speaker 3: We don't win it, we're getting evicted. Let's go hawks.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 30:40Speaker 2: live weekdays at three pm Eastern twelve pm Pacific.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Please to have Mike Tannenbaum on during a very busy
- 30:48Speaker 1: time for him, busy time in the NFL. And I
- 30:51Speaker 1: was just alerted by Mike that my daughter is friends
- 30:55Speaker 1: with his son. I had no idea. I'm up, I'm listen.
- 30:58Speaker 1: I'm upset. I am out outrage because I would have
- 31:01Speaker 1: parlayed this relationship into something much bigger and better for myself. Hello,
- 31:05Speaker 1: Mike Tadam bam, how are you well?
- 31:07Speaker 9: Not to be presumptuous? But if the day ever kine,
- 31:10Speaker 9: you would have to pay for the wedding. So it's
- 31:11Speaker 9: all gonna.
- 31:14Speaker 3: So you have them getting married? Is that what you're
- 31:16Speaker 3: doing now?
- 31:18Speaker 9: Jacob would kill me for even saying that, But I've
- 31:20Speaker 9: heard nothing but great things, So.
- 31:23Speaker 3: I'm gonna say yes on Rachel's behalf. How about that?
- 31:26Speaker 9: Uh? Here we go. That sounds great. I'll text Jacob
- 31:31Speaker 9: Lair give him the heads up.
- 31:32Speaker 3: As well that he's getting married.
- 31:36Speaker 9: Exactly two lacrosse players from North Broward Prep. How about it?
- 31:41Speaker 3: Yep, a couple of lax players got it up, Mike.
- 31:43Speaker 5: You know, yeah, that's the man that brought in Rex
- 31:48Speaker 5: Ryan and Mark Sanchez.
- 31:49Speaker 6: Your daughter could do worse.
- 31:50Speaker 3: I know, not worse.
- 31:51Speaker 6: I'm just saying it's just good to get for me.
- 31:54Speaker 4: What do you mean? This is?
- 31:55Speaker 1: This is this is Jet's royalty on the line right now.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Mike, thank you for the good years. We appreciate it.
- 32:03Speaker 9: Okay, Well, I appreciate It's nice to be your neighbor
- 32:06Speaker 9: here in South Florida.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Yes, we will get together play golf. I can't wait
- 32:10Speaker 1: for the wedding. This is exciting, very exciting time for
- 32:13Speaker 1: me and my tad in math.
- 32:15Speaker 9: Well, just curious. I'm not sticking for what's the venue?
- 32:19Speaker 9: Where is it going to happen?
- 32:22Speaker 1: I mean, listen, that's up to that's up to Rachel
- 32:24Speaker 1: and your son. Right, I'm certain if I leave it
- 32:27Speaker 1: to my daughter, the most expensive venue imaginable?
- 32:30Speaker 9: Okay, Yeah, my daughter subscribes to the same theory, not
- 32:35Speaker 9: salary cap friendly.
- 32:38Speaker 3: She always comes in over the cap.
- 32:42Speaker 9: Consistently for twenty two years.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Mike, I wanted to ask you, this is great. I
- 32:49Speaker 1: cannot believe my daughter is married. Mike tannemboth Son. This
- 32:52Speaker 1: is so exciting.
- 32:53Speaker 6: But any they want to or not?
- 32:56Speaker 1: The most expensive place in South Florida Jesus Christ, I'm doomed.
- 33:00Speaker 1: But anyway, Mike, I wanted to ask you if you
- 33:02Speaker 1: could just take listeners inside as a former general manager,
- 33:07Speaker 1: kind of inside the preparation and what goes into getting
- 33:12Speaker 1: ready for the free agency period.
- 33:15Speaker 9: Yes, you got great to be with you. And you know,
- 33:17Speaker 9: we always say like our plan is firmly etched and
- 33:20Speaker 9: pencil and we could just zero in quickly. Let's say,
- 33:22Speaker 9: on the Kansas City Chiefs. If we were having this
- 33:24Speaker 9: conversation a month ago, I think a lot of people
- 33:27Speaker 9: would say, like, oh, they're going to draft Jeremiah Love
- 33:29Speaker 9: running back down of Nerodaine. They're desperate for running back
- 33:32Speaker 9: and Kareem Hunt and Pachecco or free agents. You get
- 33:35Speaker 9: to the combine and he has an incredible workout and
- 33:38Speaker 9: you're sitting there saying, well, there's no way he'll be
- 33:40Speaker 9: there at nine, and then you pivot quickly and you
- 33:43Speaker 9: sign Kenneth Walker, knowing that maybe with the ninth pick
- 33:46Speaker 9: you're going to take the corner. Like so, you're just
- 33:49Speaker 9: constantly reacting to information that comes to you in all
- 33:52Speaker 9: different you know, shapes and sizes, and it's sort of
- 33:55Speaker 9: the juxtaposition of like the veteran market and the you know,
- 33:59Speaker 9: the draft.
- 34:00Speaker 3: How often when you were doing this, how often did.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Your plan get blown up just because you know, you
- 34:05Speaker 1: had a different evaluation someone became available you weren't expecting.
- 34:08Speaker 3: How often does that happen?
- 34:11Speaker 9: Yeah, all the time, and sometimes too it was like
- 34:13Speaker 9: the walkway price of like what you felt was reasonable, Like,
- 34:16Speaker 9: you know, we're sitting here on you know, Tuesday afternoon
- 34:19Speaker 9: and someone like Trey Hendrickson isn't signed yet. You know,
- 34:21Speaker 9: that's that's a surprise. So you know, you see other
- 34:24Speaker 9: guys go quickly, you know, like we've seen you know,
- 34:27Speaker 9: a dote oh way, We've seen Danelle Hunter re sign.
- 34:31Speaker 9: We saw Jalen Philips go unexpected leave from Philadelphia to Carolina.
- 34:35Speaker 9: So again, you're just constantly reacting to the market at
- 34:39Speaker 9: all positions.
- 34:41Speaker 5: How often are you getting numbers from agents where you
- 34:45Speaker 5: almost want to laugh and be like, come on, man,
- 34:47Speaker 5: let's let's be real here.
- 34:50Speaker 9: Yeah. You know what's really funny about that is I'd
- 34:53Speaker 9: never met an agent in over twenty years of doing
- 34:55Speaker 9: this that when I met him at the combine, they
- 34:57Speaker 9: didn't say something along the lines of, you know, the
- 35:00Speaker 9: market is unexpectedly robust for us.
- 35:05Speaker 3: That's Rosenhouse, right, I mean all the time?
- 35:07Speaker 9: Well yeah, yeah, and I love Drew. He had deals
- 35:10Speaker 9: done with him. But you know, surprisingly their market was
- 35:13Speaker 9: better than they.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Expected doing his job though. Which team here?
- 35:18Speaker 1: Over the last couple of days, Mike, and your opinion
- 35:20Speaker 1: has improved the most.
- 35:22Speaker 9: You know, like speaking of overpaying, I really like what
- 35:24Speaker 9: the Raiders did with Linderbaum. And here's why, Like, presumptively
- 35:28Speaker 9: they're going to take Fernandra Mendoza quarterback Indiana with the
- 35:31Speaker 9: first pick overall, and they give up more sacks guys
- 35:34Speaker 9: than anybody last year in football, and more times quarterbacks
- 35:38Speaker 9: are ruined before they get a chance to develop. And
- 35:40Speaker 9: to me, like, you have to start up front with
- 35:42Speaker 9: the center, who ironically is the quarterback of the offensive
- 35:45Speaker 9: line with a new head coach. So even though they
- 35:47Speaker 9: paid a big premium, I think it was worth it.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Mike.
- 35:51Speaker 4: What do you think about the Jets training for Gino Smith?
- 35:54Speaker 9: I like it. I think what they have to be doing,
- 35:57Speaker 9: guys is scouring, and what I mean by that is,
- 36:00Speaker 9: don't stop at Gino Smith. You know, see where you are.
- 36:03Speaker 9: Maybe Pike Simpson comes into play with the second first
- 36:06Speaker 9: round pick that they have. You just got to keep
- 36:09Speaker 9: going until you hit on one. And you know, I
- 36:11Speaker 9: can't imagine that high Rod Taylor nor Justin Fields will
- 36:16Speaker 9: be back. So I think Gino Smith is a good
- 36:18Speaker 9: start that I would keep going.
- 36:20Speaker 6: Mike.
- 36:21Speaker 5: No, no player or coach has ever tried to tank.
- 36:25Speaker 5: But at some point you have to look at what
- 36:26Speaker 5: an organization is doing and think, Okay, they're looking ahead,
- 36:29Speaker 5: they're looking to the next year's draft. How do you
- 36:32Speaker 5: sort of balance that as an executive with we want
- 36:36Speaker 5: to win now, we want to put a good product
- 36:38Speaker 5: on the field, but we also know that our future
- 36:40Speaker 5: isn't here.
- 36:42Speaker 9: Yeah, that was always a hard one for me. You know,
- 36:44Speaker 9: I got it to sports because I'm very competitive. I'm
- 36:46Speaker 9: going to win at everything, and I know logic sometimes
- 36:50Speaker 9: tells otherwise. And I think if we were having this
- 36:53Speaker 9: conversation guy halfway through the season, there could be a
- 36:57Speaker 9: race to the bottom because of Dante More and archbanding
- 37:00Speaker 9: all these great quarterbacks from me out next year. But
- 37:03Speaker 9: that's a hard thing to do when you're walking in
- 37:06Speaker 9: every day with a bunch of people that are innately
- 37:08Speaker 9: very competitive.
- 37:10Speaker 4: Mike, on the topic of the draft, the Chiefs and
- 37:13Speaker 4: the Saints, who are picking at eight and nine, both
- 37:15Speaker 4: went out and signed running backs yesterday. Do you think
- 37:18Speaker 4: any of that could have to do with Jeremiah Love
- 37:21Speaker 4: and maybe they have a hint that he's going to
- 37:24Speaker 4: go before they're picking.
- 37:26Speaker 9: Yeah. Absolutely, I think Jeremiah Love, arguably he's the best
- 37:29Speaker 9: football player in this year's draft. And whether it's still
- 37:33Speaker 9: if you're kind of see at four Arizona at three,
- 37:36Speaker 9: I don't think that was a coincidence, coincidence by any
- 37:39Speaker 9: stretching When you think about Travis Ettiens from Louisiana, that
- 37:44Speaker 9: makes a lot of sense. And now we're going to
- 37:46Speaker 9: see Kenneth Walker with the Chiefs, which I think is
- 37:48Speaker 9: really exciting.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Mike, would you take a running back in the first round?
- 37:52Speaker 1: I get the value. I get he's the best player
- 37:54Speaker 1: in the draft, but that position still and I know
- 37:57Speaker 1: we've made strides here the running back is coming back,
- 38:00Speaker 1: but it still feels interchangeable when you consider that the
- 38:03Speaker 1: Super Bowl MVP is now playing for another team.
- 38:06Speaker 9: Yeah, it's interesting. Look, I think I like what they
- 38:11Speaker 9: did because you know now that you lost McDuffie, Jalen
- 38:15Speaker 9: Watson and then Josh Blooms they're probably gonna have to
- 38:18Speaker 9: draft monsor Delane Corner from LSU. He'll be the first corner.
- 38:23Speaker 9: So I think I would take a running back. To
- 38:25Speaker 9: answer your question back, do you like how the chief
- 38:27Speaker 9: said it? Just given what they have to deal with
- 38:29Speaker 9: relative to all the holes they have to fill.
- 38:32Speaker 1: What's the ceiling? In your opinion on Mendoza.
- 38:36Speaker 9: I think he's Matt Ryan. I think he's Paul accurate,
- 38:42Speaker 9: good not great athlete, good armstrength, not great arm strength.
- 38:45Speaker 9: But look, you know, the Falcons for the better part
- 38:47Speaker 9: of a decade drove to the stadium every week with
- 38:49Speaker 9: the chance won because you know, Matt Ryan was their quarterback.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Is there a signing here, a reported signing that made
- 38:57Speaker 1: you kind of scratch your head and go, what the
- 38:58Speaker 1: hell is this team doing?
- 39:02Speaker 9: Good? Question? Look, I'm surprised how much these punters are gains.
- 39:09Speaker 9: It's really stunning and how quickly they went. I'm not
- 39:12Speaker 9: really quite sure why. You know, given the dynamic kickoff.
- 39:17Speaker 9: You know, you make two first downs and you know
- 39:20Speaker 9: punting has become you know, obviously it's still important, but
- 39:22Speaker 9: me not as important. I would think all the punters
- 39:25Speaker 9: getting signed and traction has been a surprise, Mike.
- 39:30Speaker 5: The reports are that teams are calling the forty nine
- 39:32Speaker 5: ers about Mac Jones and they're being turned away because
- 39:35Speaker 5: the price is quote astronomical. What do you do with
- 39:40Speaker 5: an asset like Mac Jones where you know your goal
- 39:43Speaker 5: is not to use him, but at the same time
- 39:46Speaker 5: you don't want to just give him away.
- 39:49Speaker 9: Yeah, you know what I'm doing, I'm extending him. And
- 39:52Speaker 9: here here's why. It's you know, kind of like you
- 39:54Speaker 9: know the whole you know saying as it relates to
- 39:56Speaker 9: life insurance, right, you hope you never need it. But
- 40:00Speaker 9: with back Jones like Brock Perry is a good quarterback, guys,
- 40:03Speaker 9: but he has height and athletic limitations as it relates
- 40:06Speaker 9: to being a starting NFL quarterback. And Mac Jones like,
- 40:10Speaker 9: if you look at the difference between Mac and Daniel Jones,
- 40:12Speaker 9: Daniel Jones signed a one year deal and now is
- 40:14Speaker 9: going to be rewarded significantly either on the transition tag
- 40:18Speaker 9: or you know, on a long term deal. The forty
- 40:20Speaker 9: nine Ers smartly signed Mac Jones to a two year deal,
- 40:23Speaker 9: and what I would be talking to him about is like, hey,
- 40:25Speaker 9: let's say you need a three year extension once you hit
- 40:28Speaker 9: one hundred percent of a double. You'll make whatever it is,
- 40:30Speaker 9: ten twelve million dollars a year, and you may play
- 40:33Speaker 9: a lot, you may not play at all. But this way,
- 40:35Speaker 9: like you know you're going to be here, start raising
- 40:37Speaker 9: a family here. And if I'm in the forty nine ers,
- 40:41Speaker 9: I think of it as pretty slash mac Jones because
- 40:44Speaker 9: I think that you know, brock Perry is going to
- 40:46Speaker 9: start seventeen games back to back years and year over year.
- 40:49Speaker 9: I think that's a heavy lift to it to the Falcons.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Mike, Is that a good fit for Tua?
- 40:55Speaker 9: I think yeah, on a one year deal. You know
- 40:57Speaker 9: the expression you had me out of a low like
- 40:59Speaker 9: at a gam you have me at one point three
- 41:01Speaker 9: million dollars, so you know, like it all begins with
- 41:07Speaker 9: one point three million. Like I think it's a win win.
- 41:09Speaker 9: I think for two to be successful, he needs two things.
- 41:11Speaker 9: He needs a strong offensive line where Atlanta gave up
- 41:14Speaker 9: the fourth few of stacks last year, so that's good.
- 41:17Speaker 9: And arguably they have the best running back in football
- 41:19Speaker 9: in Viijon Robinson. So if I'm Tua, that's a great.
- 41:23Speaker 9: If I'm Atlanta, you know, it's not unlike the conversation
- 41:26Speaker 9: we just had about the forty nine ers, which is
- 41:28Speaker 9: you could stack up you know, Tuh and Michael Pennocks,
- 41:32Speaker 9: two injury thrown ironically left handers, and hopefully you can
- 41:35Speaker 9: get seventeen games, you know, between the two of them.
- 41:38Speaker 1: We talked to Chris Simms about this all the time.
- 41:40Speaker 1: It outrages him, and I'm wondering if you sent some
- 41:43Speaker 1: sort of change with how we're going to slot these quarterbacks,
- 41:45Speaker 1: and meaning the two of contract was such a bad contract.
- 41:48Speaker 1: It turned out to be maybe the worst contract in
- 41:50Speaker 1: the history of the NFL, but his time was up
- 41:53Speaker 1: and the Dolphins needed to sign him to a deal.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Do you think we're going to stop seeing that NFL
- 41:56Speaker 1: teams doing that the next guy up gets the most money.
- 42:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:01Speaker 9: Well, it's interesting, Like quarterbacks is a complicated conversation because
- 42:05Speaker 9: I can see why people are going to criticize, you know,
- 42:09Speaker 9: Miami for the extension. But the inverse of that is
- 42:12Speaker 9: if we were running a football team, guys, and we
- 42:14Speaker 9: didn't have a quarterback, we would have no chance. So
- 42:17Speaker 9: the irrationality could be somewhat justified from a standpoint of
- 42:22Speaker 9: if you don't have one, then you think you do
- 42:24Speaker 9: like get them locked up typically over time makes more
- 42:27Speaker 9: sense than not.
- 42:29Speaker 4: Mike Werry, South Florida Show, what do you think about
- 42:32Speaker 4: the Dolphins becoming the Packers of the South down here
- 42:35Speaker 4: with John Eric Sullivan and Lafleur and not Lafleur, but
- 42:43Speaker 4: Malik Willis too.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Yeah, he met the head coach. You forgot his day
- 42:46Speaker 3: and that's what happened there.
- 42:46Speaker 9: Mike, Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jeff Naffley who's from New Jersey
- 42:50Speaker 9: via you know, Wisconsin now down here in South Florida.
- 42:53Speaker 9: I think they're gonna do great. I think let them
- 42:57Speaker 9: have time, let them do it the right way long term.
- 43:00Speaker 9: You know, it's interesting when you cut to you're sort
- 43:04Speaker 9: of like in a rebuild. The fact that they signed
- 43:06Speaker 9: Malik Willis kind of singles like, well, hey, we're gonna
- 43:08Speaker 9: try to be a little bit more competitive, you know,
- 43:10Speaker 9: sooner than later. So I believe in both those guys.
- 43:13Speaker 9: I know them within the industry. They're well thought of,
- 43:16Speaker 9: they're smart, and I think they have a chance to
- 43:19Speaker 9: do well. It's not gonna happen overnight. When you move
- 43:21Speaker 9: on from Bradley Chubb and Tyreek Hill and alec Ingold
- 43:25Speaker 9: and Tua, Like, you don't replace everybody you know overnight.
- 43:29Speaker 1: That was a bad mistake by Taylor, Mike, but you
- 43:31Speaker 1: have to give them credit. He remember the GM's name
- 43:34Speaker 1: and not the head coach. I mean that has you
- 43:36Speaker 1: like that?
- 43:36Speaker 3: Right? As a former GM you love that right?
- 43:39Speaker 9: Yeah? Yeah, Look, you got to you gotta do what
- 43:42Speaker 9: is in your best interest. Every situation is gonna be different,
- 43:46Speaker 9: but yeah, you you sometimes you have to take.
- 43:48Speaker 5: The long view on deals, Mike, Travis Kelsey is coming
- 43:54Speaker 5: back to the Chiefs on a one year deal. How
- 43:57Speaker 5: do you sort of navigate with a player of that
- 44:00Speaker 5: stature in that era and that you know, with that
- 44:03Speaker 5: organization who's been there for so long and we know
- 44:05Speaker 5: he's at the end and you kind of want him
- 44:07Speaker 5: to go out on his terms, but at the same
- 44:09Speaker 5: time kind of want him to go out.
- 44:13Speaker 9: Yeah. Well I've said that. You know, I'm not doing
- 44:15Speaker 9: really well with the Taylor Swift fan club here. But
- 44:19Speaker 9: when you're a GM, guys, you have to pay a
- 44:21Speaker 9: player for what they're going to do, not what they've done.
- 44:23Speaker 9: And Travis Kelsey, to me, I would have moved on
- 44:25Speaker 9: like Trev McDuffie, in my opinion, was their second best player,
- 44:29Speaker 9: and when they traded him. I'm like, oh, okay, maybe
- 44:32Speaker 9: they're like in this many rebuild, Patrick's not can be
- 44:34Speaker 9: one hundred percent this year. Let's get four picks for
- 44:37Speaker 9: a good player and take our medicine and you know,
- 44:39Speaker 9: gear up for twenty twenty seven. So I would not
- 44:43Speaker 9: have signed Kelsey. I think he's a Hall of Famer,
- 44:45Speaker 9: a great player, but you get worried that again, you're
- 44:49Speaker 9: paying for you know, what he did, not what he's
