- Lucas: Hallo, en welkom terug bij Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Ik ben Lucas. Luna: En ik ben Luna! We are back for episode 21. Lucas: We are. And last time we talked about the verb 'zijn' — to be. So today, something practical: ordering drinks at a café. Luna: Oh nice! I love coffee. Okay, teach me how to order a coffee in Dutch. Lucas: Perfect. First phrase: 'Ik wil graag koffie.' Means 'I would like coffee.' Say it with me: Ik wil graag koffie. Luna: Ik wil graag koffie. That sounds like 'ick vil khraakh koffie'? Lucas: Yeah, close. Ik wil graag koffie. The 'g' is that throaty sound. Ik wil graag koffie. Luna: Ik wil graag koffie. Nice. So if I want tea, I say 'Ik wil graag thee'? Lucas: Exactly. But there's a more polite way to ask: 'Mag ik thee?' — May I have tea? Let's practice that. Luna: Mag ik thee? That's 'makh ik tay'? Lucas: Yep. Mag ik thee? Softer g. Mag ik thee? Luna: Mag ik thee? Okay. So I can say 'Ik wil graag koffie' or 'Mag ik thee?' Which is more common? Lucas: Both work. In a café, you'll also hear people just say 'Een koffie, alstublieft' — one coffee, please. Luna: Een koffie, alstublieft. Formal 'alstublieft' instead of 'alsjeblieft'. Lucas: Right. 'Alstublieft' is more polite with strangers. Say it: Een koffie, alstublieft. Luna: Een koffie, alstublieft. Nice. And what if I want black coffee? Zwarte koffie? Lucas: Yes! 'Zwarte koffie' — black coffee. And if you want milk, 'Met melk.' Let's hear you say both. Luna: Zwarte koffie. Met melk. Okay, so I can say 'Een zwarte koffie, alstublieft'? Lucas: Perfect. 'Een zwarte koffie, alstublieft.' Or 'Een koffie met melk, alstublieft.' Let's do a little scene. You're at a café. Luna: Okay. So I walk up and say 'Hallo, een koffie met melk, alstublieft.' Lucas: Excellent. And the barista might ask 'Zwart of met melk?' You say 'Met melk, alstublieft.' Luna: Met melk, alstublieft. Got it. Can we practice one more? What if I want tea with milk? Lucas: Sure! 'Mag ik thee met melk?' — May I have tea with milk? Try it. Luna: Mag ik thee met melk? Sounds lovely. Lucas: Yeah. So to review: Ik wil graag koffie. Mag ik thee? Een koffie, alstublieft. Zwarte koffie. Met melk. Luna: Ik wil graag koffie, Mag ik thee?, Een koffie alstublieft, Zwarte koffie, Met melk. I think I'm ready for a Dutch café now. Lucas: You are! And remember, you can always say 'Dank u wel' after they hand you your drink. Luna: Oh right, thanks. Dank u wel. Well, that's it for today's episode of Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Lucas: Practice these phrases, and next time you're in a Dutch café, you'll sound like a local. Tot ziens! Luna: Tot ziens!
