- 3:36We have many things in store for this season and today we are paying
- 3:43tribute to men, and actually all month long we will be paying tribute to
- 3:49men. There's so much that men go through. You know, we are
- 3:55quick sometimes to point out the flaws that men have, but how about let's,
- 4:01you know, appreciate what the what the men are doing. And we
- 4:08want you to know that you are loved and you are appreciated and we do
- 4:13recognize. Uh, the wonderful contributions that you do make to make uh,
- 4:18you know, in the world. And we're all on this earth existing together.
- 4:25So it is important that we lift each other up because arn ship and
- 4:31sharper and so I'm so excited. We're getting ready to dive into the show.
- 4:40I do have a wonderful guest. Uh. This person is dear and
- 4:44dear to me. And why not share my first show and have a co
- 4:48host who is my mother, author and pastor Brenda Williams. Hi, mom,
- 4:58Hello, fair. I just thought it would be really good for us
- 5:04to collaborate and you know, just share the show and we can talk about
- 5:12some important things, you know, the men that are in our lives.
- 5:15And you know, we've had some strong men in our family and you know,
- 5:23no, they're not all perfect, but they are worthy of being mentioned
- 5:30and being celebrated. And so that's what this show is about. And so
- 5:35I just wanted to dive into can you tell the world about my amazing mother?
- 5:46Well, first of all, I'm so elated and so excited to be
- 5:50on my daughter's podcast, and thank you for having me and honoring me on
- 5:56your first show. I am an author, I am a pastor, and
- 6:08I am the president of b w c C. We are building walls improvement
- 6:14co operation and we do stage plays and we reach out to the community and
- 6:20include at risk children. So bw CIC is on the move. Wonderful,
- 6:29wonderful. Yes, I know. When Bomb was doing the play, it
- 6:34was so fun, it was so fun to be a part of. And
- 6:39you know, everybody got together and made it and made it happen, men
- 6:44and women together. So just stressing the importance of us all being able to
- 6:48work together and how wonderful it is when we strive and working unity with each
- 6:55other. So I did want to quickly get into you know, the the
- 7:01you know, father's days coming up. You know, I know Poppy,
- 7:08which is my grandfather, Mom's dad. He's no longer here, and but
- 7:15I did want to talk about him. He was such an awesome man.
- 7:20And as we are celebrating the men, also pointing out the importance also of
- 7:29leadership, you know, the importance of we you know, we men,
- 7:32we need your leadership. I don't care what nobody says. You know,
- 7:36men are a great balance to us. You know, like I said,
- 7:42iron sharpens iron. We all work together. Tell me a little bit about
- 7:46or tell the world about a little bit about my grandfather, your father,
- 7:51and uh so the world can kind of know who he is through us.
- 7:57Sure, most definitely my father was Pastor Milton K. Blackman. My father
- 8:05was in the in World War Two and the Korean War. He was a
- 8:13man of integrity. He loved people, and he had a heart for people.
- 8:24He had a heart for the homeless, and that's why he started his
- 8:28church. But he would reach out to the community and just minister to those
- 8:41that were on the streets. He was a hard working man. He worked
- 8:45two jobs to take care of us, and he just was so happy that
- 8:50God blessed him to have a family and he just did everything he could to
- 8:56take care of us, his grandchildren of great grandchildren. And he was just
- 9:03the best father I would say in the whole wide world. Yes, I
- 9:09remember as a being young and going to the church and uh, you know,
- 9:16basically we lived at this church. It was a church right on if
- 9:20you're if anyone is familiar with the Los Angeles area, it is. It
- 9:24was on a corner of one hundred and fourth in Avalon and he would barbecue
- 9:31and he would feed the homeless, and you know, he just he loved
- 9:37everybody. He would give He would give you know, people the last cent
- 9:43in his in his pocket and that he loved the community that way. And
- 9:48I also remember he used to love those shell peanuts, you know, the
- 9:56altho old fashion to get a bag of those peanuts. Get him from somebody
- 10:01off the corner, you know. So you know he has some great memories.
- 10:09Uh. Where a great leader, you know. So it's kind of
- 10:15like, you know, leadership, great leadership also starts at home. And
- 10:20you know he led his family. Uh. He taught us what was right,
- 10:24and he taught us what was wrong. And uh and I love that
- 10:28about him. Uh also as well, I wanted to go over and reach
- 10:37over to my dad, his mom's ex husband. Yes, we honor him,
- 10:48you know, yes we we we honor him. He's no longer here.
- 10:54He passed, you know, he passed away. But that is you
- 10:58know, also some and else that you know we share in common. My
- 11:03dad, and he was you know, he was such a kind gentle man,
- 11:11you know. And when you talk about leadership, I had five children,
- 11:16you know, I have five children, and he helped take care of
- 11:20every single pile y you know, and even after mom and Dad divorced.
- 11:30What I remember about my dad was he never let us go without. You
- 11:35know, even though you guys were divorced. I remember him still going to
- 11:41help you get your car serviced and you know, making sure, you know,
- 11:48going with you to even find a new car. And you know,
- 11:52even though he paid child support, still disguise were the limits for me.
- 12:00He didn't limit me to just I never saw him say, oh, go
- 12:05back to your mama, because I already paid child support for the bunch.
- 12:09You know, I needed something, you know, And so I appreciate him,
- 12:15you know, for that right, and so even as well to also
- 12:20the other men in our family, like our my uncles, and you know,
- 12:28there's so many people, so many men that had such a hand in
- 12:35raising me, you know, and uh, you know, and I appreciate
- 12:39each and every one of them because it takes a true village. And I'm
- 12:48an only child. Do you imagine if you had it's a lot of them
- 12:56me. If you if you could, you know, just you know,
- 13:07share a few things of the men in your life who you know I have,
- 13:16you know, of course, my village, but if you can remember
- 13:20who was in your village that were males that you looked up to in the
- 13:24family, or even doesn't even have to be in the family, you know,
- 13:28in church or in the church circle. You know, who do you
- 13:33feel made a great impact on your life, you know, going through your
- 13:37years. Well, I must say, of course, you know Dad was
- 13:43first, but then my pastor, Apostle will A. Wheat. I was
- 13:52there from nineteen eighty through twenty ten. So for me, my pastor was
- 14:01a great uh leader pastor and also a father figure, and I learned so
- 14:09much from him. He spoke so much into my life. And one of
- 14:13the leaders there, Pastor Hawkins, he was a deacon there and he would
- 14:22interact with me and he loved you and he always imparted wisdom you know,
- 14:28into me. So pretty much. Those were basically the two men that that
- 14:37spoken to my life that I can remember. But as I said, uh,
- 14:45Pastor Week was a great leader and he kind of just led us along
- 14:50the way and spoken to our lives. So I am I am grateful for
- 14:54him being in my life as a male. Now, my brother Robert also
- 15:00even though he was younger than I, but he always looked out for me.
- 15:05Uh. He lived with us for a long period of time. So
- 15:09if there was anything that I needed, I could always uh, you know,
- 15:13talk to Robert and he would share his wisdom with me over the years.
- 15:18So I was blessed, you know, to have Robert and then my
- 15:24other brother Cedric, that he also had a lot of wisdom and knowledge and
- 15:28he's spoken to my life. So I was blessed to have two brothers.
- 15:33I had lost one brother, but Robert and Cedric were there for me,
- 15:41and so that was a blessing. So I was truly blessed to have you
- 15:46know them in my life. Yes, yes, well real, real quickly.
- 15:50What was interesting is I put up and I started reflecting on you know,
- 15:58what leadership is and what it has the potential you know, to do,
- 16:04and I see, you know, lead great leadership can inspire greatness,
- 16:11you know. And also, uh, you know, leading with love is
- 16:15great leadership, and it makes a big difference in the world. Love makes
- 16:21a big difference in the world period. But when you lead with love,
- 16:25it's a different type of leadership, you know. And you know, a
- 16:30great leadership it uplifts it and you know, transforms and it's about bringing out
- 16:37the best of others. And I can truly say I'm thankful that the men
- 16:42in my life, you know, exemplified that, you know, the you
- 16:48know, the ones who were the positive you know as as well like even
- 16:55you know, like my my husband, you know, you elder ruling young.
- 17:00You know, he he inspires me and he pushes me, you know,
- 17:06he leads, but he also leads by example. And you know,
- 17:08so you know that was one of the great things that you know, one
- 17:15of the great things that I saw in him, you know, but before
- 17:18we got married. And so it's good to have someone that you know that
- 17:26I've been there before, you know, through and you walked with me through
- 17:33you know, my my first marriage, right and you're walking with me now
- 17:37in my in my current marriage. And you know, noticing the difference,
- 17:44you know, and how when you're with someone and you're you know, who
- 17:49has great leadership qualities, Yes, you know, it makes a big difference
- 17:56somebody that you mean on and really and and you know, especially someone who
- 18:02understands that leadership is not controlled, you know, the leadership, but leadership
- 18:08can correct, leadership can steer you in the right direction, you know.
- 18:15And so but when you have someone who does it out of love, yes,
- 18:21it makes a big difference, doesn't it a difference and wisdom and wisdom
- 18:29and wisdom exactly exactly. I would just love to take a moment. I
- 18:34see a few people in the chat and I wanted to make sure that I
- 18:38acknowledge them. Hello, shutting it, Helloa Trees, Hi Trevita. I
- 18:45do think everyone who has joined us today, if you're just if you're just
- 18:52chiming in. I'm having a conversation with Mom and we're just kind of reflecting
- 19:00and going over positive things when it comes to the men in our life,
- 19:07you know, because it's it's so easy to pick apart something and point out
- 19:14the negative. But what I but what I want this show to do is
- 19:18to point out the positive uh that men can bring to our lives, you
- 19:25know, and especially with Father's Day coming up, you know, you know,
- 19:32there's so many great men out there. But also understanding as well that
- 19:37some people may not share a father, but there are some men that have
- 19:41made positive, positive impact on women, you know, And so it takes
- 19:49like I said, it takes a village for all of us, you know,
- 19:55and especially when I say it takes a village. And I love how
- 20:00when you could be connected with a man who is solid and has great leadership
- 20:07skills. Because I remember when Ashton had passed. For those who may or
- 20:14may not know, I did have a son that was killed from gun violence
- 20:18back in August of twenty twenty. And you know, then I was single.
- 20:23You know, I had you know, no male companion to lean on.
- 20:30And my husband now at the time, we were just friends and he
- 20:38was a great shoulder to lean on and I had to depend on him quite
- 20:44a bit for that male leadership. You know, there was some things I
- 20:48was confused. I needed a solid and a person who had a solid and
- 20:55sound foundation and who could help me think. And I thank God and I'm
- 21:00grateful that he that God brought him into my life, uh to be you
- 21:07know, an example uh in leadership and leadership in guiding me through that difficult
- 21:15time. So, you know, having somebody in your corner. And my
- 21:18dad had already passed, you know, so I didn't have my dad's leadership
- 21:25any longer. I just have, you know, a part of my dad
- 21:30in me, you know, the leadership skills that he had instilled in me.
- 21:34But I didn't have a male companion to lean on. So it was
- 21:40important for me to have someone that was in my corner, to be a
- 21:45voice of reason, to be strength, to be a strength and and and
- 21:51mom, you even saw that, you know how how my husband was able
- 21:56to you know, he was able to kind of yeah, long right,
- 22:00right right, So quickly I want to go over to I have a tribute,
- 22:08uh to the man in our life. And I would just like to
- 22:14quickly, it's really quick, and just to share a little bit a piece
- 22:18of me. And also mom, and if we could go ahead and watch
- 22:26the video, MM told you it was quick. And if anyone noticed,
- 23:07I did include our pastor on there. Yes, I did pastor on there
- 23:12because he is a great staple when you talk about leadership. I really enjoy
- 23:25being I consider myself a daughter of his, and I can I also consider
- 23:32him our pastor, uh somewhat of a father, a spiritual father. You
- 23:38know. His name is Chief Apostle Michael L. Rose from the Wrecking Crew
- 23:44of Christ's Holiness Church in Los Angeles. And uh, when I lost my
- 23:51son, he became also as well a really big part of my life.
- 23:57That help pushed me through. And he would say, daughter, I have
- 24:03it. You don't have to worry. You know, I didn't know what
- 24:07to do I didn't know, but he became a staple. And he also
- 24:11counseled me when I was dating my husband, and he knew my husband longer,
- 24:18way longer than me. He knew my husband about what about twenty years
- 24:22to my you know at the time, maybe about four years, three or
- 24:26four years. So, but even still he made sure that I was okay,
- 24:33you know, you know that that you know, the dating process was
- 24:37going good and feeding into me and making sure he let me know that he
- 24:44basically stood in place of a father, you know, to make sure you
- 24:48know you're not being taken advantage of and things of that particular nature. And
- 24:55also seeing in his walk, you know, the many things that our pastor
- 25:00has to go through, the many hits that he takes, but yet he
- 25:04still takes time with his members and make sure that they are good and he
- 25:11leads by example. And so I'm honored actually to be not only a member
- 25:19of the church, but also to be considered myself a daughter and also as
- 25:26well, mam, would you like to give the audience a little bit of
- 25:30your experience with our pastor when you had your healthcare Uh, you know how
- 25:38he kind of you know, he stepped up and he made sure. Yes,
- 25:45we are blessed with an excellent pastor, father figure, and counselor and
- 25:55everything that you need wrapped up in Apostle Roles. I had received a report
- 26:03that I had breast cancer. So at the time I was in Atlanta and
- 26:08I had to move to California to be with my daughter. But I went
- 26:12to see him, and I tell you, Apostle Rose prayed with me.
- 26:19He stood with me every step of the way, and we were so connected
- 26:26in the spirit that anytime the enemy would try to do something to me,
- 26:32he would find my daughter and say, where's your mama at I need to
- 26:34pray for her. So I tell you I had not experienced, you know,
- 26:42a closest with the pastor to that extent to walk me through what I
- 26:48tried to appear would be a death scare. But through the word of God,
- 26:55an anointed pastor knowing how to pray and stand with me, I am
- 27:00here. So I give God all the glory and the praise, and just
- 27:04thank God for my awesome pastor. That's good. That's good. Yes,
- 27:11he he really is. He really is awesome, and I really think thank
- 27:15God for him. But I do also thank God for my village of uncles.
- 27:22They've all shaped me in some way, some form. Uh you know
- 27:26my you know again, my uncle Robert, your brother. Uh, he
- 27:33was kind of like he lived in a home with us. You know,
- 27:36while I was young and could not get past Uncle Robert and I used to
- 27:41love, uh we share. We used to love to eat fruity pebbles together,
- 27:48pebbles in subway. Those were our two are two things that we share.
- 27:55But I learned a lot of Black history from him, yes, which
- 28:02was very important. You know, there would be ours, you know,
- 28:04my head would be noting like this. But but uh, you know,
- 28:10he tried to instill pride, pride and being you know, who we were
- 28:17and who we are as a people. And you know he's still and you
- 28:21know, studying, and you know, so you know, I appreciate him.
- 28:26And he was also a good example of a true man of God,
- 28:32yes, you know. Uh so I thank god that I also got to
- 28:37experience that because you know, he was a little younger. You know,
- 28:41you know, of course we have our grandfather which was older. He was
- 28:44a man of God, pastor. But it was good to see somebody,
- 28:47you know, a little younger stuff down who yes, who took the stand
- 28:52and say I'm going to live a holy life. Yeah, and uh,
- 28:56and he didn't play when it came to his salvation and didn't play up with
- 29:02God. And so I growing up, I got to see that. I
- 29:06got to see that example. And so that's why I feel it's important to
- 29:12point out these things because sometimes, you know, just like us women,
- 29:18we love to hear the accolades, you know, we love to hear,
- 29:22oh I'm beautiful, or you're doing We love to hear you're doing a good
- 29:26job. You know. Sometimes we even like to hear yes, you did
- 29:30this for me, you did this, you did this, Yes you did
- 29:33this. But also men also as well like to be reaffirmed as well.
- 29:38I feel like they get beat up enough. You know, Society beats our
- 29:45men up enough, you know. And yes, you know, I believe
- 29:49they make some mistakes along the way, you know. Yes, you know
- 29:53you have to pick out the good with the bad, you know. But
- 29:56overall, there are some men out there who are doing some awesome things,
- 30:03some positive things. You know. There are men out there that are trying
- 30:07to snatch the the youth from you know, poverty, stricten gang areas,
- 30:14you know, they're trying to uplift them and pluck them up out of their
- 30:17circumstances. There are men who are speaking positive things into our youth. You
- 30:23know. There are men that are out there loving women and making sure that
- 30:30we are protected and that we are loved, you know. So, you
- 30:34know, and I wanted to make sure today that we focused on the good
- 30:40and the positive things that men are doing in our lives, and so I
- 30:47did also as well. Want to think, you know, I had an
- 30:49uncle, another uncle I like to mention by the name of Eric. He
- 30:55has gone home to be with the Lord. And I remember being young he
- 31:02would buy me savings bonds, and you know, of course, when you
- 31:08get old enough, people be like, oh I got some money there,
- 31:11let me go catch this thing. You know, probably if I would have
- 31:12saved them, maybe they would be worthed more. I don't know, but
- 31:17I do remember, you know, he used to buy me savings bonds when
- 31:21I was younger. And you know, so as a man trying to look
- 31:26out for the financial aspect of a young child, I really feel like that
- 31:33should be commended because you know, he said that as an uncle, he
- 31:38worked at a bank. Growing up, I remember he worked at a bank,
- 31:41and you know, so he wanted to make sure that he left me
- 31:45something or he gave me something that would help me later. And you know,
- 31:51so those things, like I said, they are noticed and they are
- 31:55well and they are appreciated, you know. But also as well, Uh,
- 32:01my husband is well. He has worked with at risk youth over the
- 32:07years. He's done some gang intervention, you know, things of that particular
- 32:15nature. And he does coaching. Uh. He does purpose coaching, getting
- 32:19people to see the purpose within themselves and uh to move forward. So I
- 32:25appreciate all the positive things and like I said, as that has shaped me
- 32:30and has molded me into the person to even be here to speak on this
- 32:37podcast. But you guys say, you know, you know, I'm typically
- 32:43pretty a pretty quiet person, and I don't like to be in the forefront.
- 32:46But because of the love and because of the leadership, you know,
- 32:54and because of the you can do it by men in my life. By
- 33:00the men in my life, that's why I'm sitting here today. And also
- 33:07mom, but my husband really pushed me, and he really says, you
- 33:09can do this, you can do this. So I feel it's important to
- 33:15highlight that, you know, and thank him for all of the love and
- 33:20the support that he does provide me along the way, and so I do
- 33:24appreciate that. But we are getting ready to go to a commercial break,
- 33:34and I did want to thank Mom for coming on and just sharing these few
- 33:39moments with me and just kind of going down memory lane and just helping me
- 33:45bring some positivity and show some love to our men out there who are doing
- 33:52great things. And so we will go to a commercial break, and on
- 33:59my way back or when I come back, I do have a great interactive
- 34:04question that I would like everyone to participate in and interact with me. This
- 34:09show is not just about me. I don't I don't necessarily want to talk
