Latest / WCBH / Crows Dominate, Freo Tops Ladder — Round 14 Wrap with Jono & Cam
Transcript
- 0:18Joining me on the line is Jono from Geelong. Jono, it's been a few weeks.
- 0:22Welcome back. Thank you, Cam. Great to be back. Good to hear your voice once again.
- 0:26Last weekend was round 14. Let's run through those results. Western Bulldogs
- 0:31up against the Adelaide Crows, and the Crows had a big win there.
- 0:34Yeah, the Crows were very impressive. You know that I am fond of the Crows, Cam.
- 0:38I did pick them at the start of the year to win the flag, and hopefully this
- 0:41is the turning point for them where they can string some solid games together.
- 0:45They beat the Cats the week before by a solitary point and then demolished the
- 0:50doggies at Etihad, or Marvel, I should say, by 57 points.
- 0:55Yeah, they're looking good, the Crows. Now, let's have a look at your cats up
- 0:59against my sons. We are in the post-Darwin hangover period still for the sons. Yeah.
- 1:06It seems that history is repeating itself. It certainly is. And poor Damien
- 1:11Hardwick, he's been a bit cranky in his post-match press conferences of late,
- 1:15questioning some umpiring decisions, which, to be fair, some of them were a
- 1:19little bit questionable.
- 1:21And they've been coming from a cat supporter, Cam.
- 1:25He wasn't too impressed and he did receive a phone call from Greg Swan for a
- 1:30Please Explain yesterday so I think he's on notice the coach of the Suns, Damien Hardwick,
- 1:36little thing saying, Cam, was 45 points the margin in the end the Cats were
- 1:39very impressive against your Suns Yeah, correct, 45 points it's a,
- 1:44bit too late to argue the toss of the coin when you're down by that much on
- 1:48Saturday we saw Melbourne they had a great win another 45-point margin this
- 1:53time over the Essendon Bombers.
- 1:56Yeah, and another tribute to Neil Danaher once again after his funeral,
- 1:59his state funeral, took place earlier in the week.
- 2:02He coached Melbourne for a long time and also Captain Destin and played at Essendon.
- 2:06So it was great to see these two teams come together and pay tribute to the
- 2:10great man, Neil Danaher.
- 2:12And as we probably expected, the Ds were far too strong in the end,
- 2:1645 points over the lowly Bombers who, yeah, they're going from bad to worse
- 2:20this season. once again, the Bombers.
- 2:22Yeah, certainly. They can't seem to get a win anywhere. Now,
- 2:26the Kangaroos had a one-point win over West Coast.
- 2:29They did. They bounced back from their debacle the week before against Frio,
- 2:33where they stayed the week over in WA.
- 2:35The Eagles had their chances. Jake Waterman, he's kicking his being off of late,
- 2:39which a lot of people think is just a mental issue for him.
- 2:42But he took a mark with 40 seconds remaining on the clock and hit the post.
- 2:47They would have put the Eagles four points up and probably won the game.
- 2:50But nonetheless, the Kangas got the job done on the road.
- 2:55And the 15th place, Port Adelaide, they pushed the Swans all the way.
- 2:58Swans finally getting home by three.
- 3:00Yeah, they certainly did. And Port had every opportunity to win that game.
- 3:03The Swans probably just a little bit too classy in the end and handled the pressure
- 3:08in the end of the game better than what Port did. And three-point winners, the Swans.
- 3:13Well done to Port. They've been involved in a lot of close games this year.
- 3:16I think we spoke a few weeks ago, Cam, about how close some of their margins
- 3:20have been. And they really could be up amongst the top two or three teams in
- 3:24the competition if the results had gone their way. So they're doing a lot of
- 3:28things right, Port, but just not getting over the line in those close ones.
- 3:32Yeah, the Lions defeated the Tigers, but you would have expected a larger margin for the Lions.
- 3:37Yeah, and the Tigers were impressive. They probably took two and a half quarters
- 3:41of the Lions to shake off the Tigers.
- 3:44And we've spoken earlier throughout the season about the extensive injury list
- 3:49that Richmond do have, and they've still got a massive amount of names not playing.
- 3:54So it was a fantastic performance by the Tigers down at Hobart at Blunstone Arena.
- 3:59But yeah, the Lions just a little bit too classy in the end once they shook off the Tigers.
- 4:03And St Kilda, they snuck in the top 10 by 0.1% following their victory over GWS.
- 4:12I just can't get a read of either of these teams, Cam. This game was there for the taking.
- 4:17Well, I was flicking between the Socceroos and this game on Sunday, mind you.
- 4:21And both sides had ample opportunities to win this game.
- 4:25And obviously the Saints got it done in the end, getting out of the line by
- 4:28eight points where they let one the week before slip against the Swans where
- 4:32they got things all wrong, drastically wrong towards the end of the game.
- 4:35But they did a better job this week in icing the game at the end.
- 4:39But, yeah, I just don't know. I think they're probably mid-teams,
- 4:43both of these sides, but I just can't get a read of either of them.
- 4:46And the teams that had the buys last week, Carlton Blues, Collingwood Magpies,
- 4:50Fremantle Dockers, and the Hawthorne Hawks. Before we get into round 15,
- 4:54let's have a look at the latter as it's been a few weeks, and Frio and Sydney
- 4:59Swans, both on top on 48 points.
- 5:01Yeah, they're doing a fantastic job, both of those sides, and we'll talk shortly
- 5:05about it. The Cats have got Frio tomorrow night over in WA, and that will be interesting.
- 5:11Rounding out the top six, Yorkats and Melbourne Demons now on 36 points.
- 5:16Gee, they've come up the ladder the last few weeks, haven't they?
- 5:18The Hawks are on 34, Crows are now 32, and in that zone 7 through to 10,
- 5:24so what are we calling that? The wildcard zone.
- 5:28Lions and Bulldogs 32. The Suns, they've been sliding.
- 5:31They're down to 28 and 9th position, and as I mentioned before,
- 5:35Saints on 24 points. They're in 10th place, but just sitting outside the 10,
- 5:40GWS and the Kangaroos are also sitting on 24 points.
- 5:44And then I think we just need to make mention for all the other supporters out
- 5:47there, the four powerhouse sides out of Melbourne, Collingwood and Carlton,
- 5:52Richmond and Essendon, all four of them are in the bottom six.
- 5:55Isn't that just great to see?
- 5:57Yeah, it's wonderful for the national game. There's no argument to be made about
- 6:02the number of teams in Melbourne, is there? I don't think so.
- 6:07Let's move on. I was just fishing there, just trailing, Jono.
- 6:12I thought you might buy it. No, thank you, Cam. Well played.
- 6:17Thursday night, Frio and your Geelong Cats. Yeah, this will be...
- 6:21There's two games that I'm really interested in this weekend,
- 6:23and obviously this one...
- 6:25That I'm a Geelong supporter but we've got the first place versus third place
- 6:29on the ladder and the Cats were very impressive against your sons last week
- 6:33and look to be back playing the footy that they know they can play and the Dockers have just been,
- 6:38winning for fun this year and obviously sitting on top of the ladder for a reason.
- 6:42They're going to be very difficult to knock over over in Perth tomorrow night
- 6:46and I think I'm going to have to tip the Dockers at home, Cam.
- 6:50Well, I'll be tipping the Dockers. I still can't believe that you managed to
- 6:53tip against your team Friday night, Suns and Hawks?
- 6:57Well, I'm going to tip against my team and I'm also going to tip against your
- 7:00team because I don't know how well your team's actually travelling at the moment.
- 7:03There seems to be some reports between the coach and some player riffs as well,
- 7:08which is starting to rear its ugly head in the media.
- 7:12So the Hawks have had their week off. They should be nice and fresh. They're a good side.
- 7:18And again, I think your Giants are suffering that Darwin hangover and I think the Hawks will get them.
- 7:23I'll be tipping the Suns. Always back your team Saturday, Crows versus the Demons.
- 7:28This is the other game I'm really interested in. The Crows demolished the Doggies
- 7:33last week, which we made mention of, and the Dees have been the surprise packet of the season.
- 7:38They're playing a brand of football that's actually good to watch. And...
- 7:43I'm happy to sit down and park my butt on the couch and watch Melbourne play
- 7:47footy because they're playing a really impressive, fast style of football,
- 7:51and it's fun to watch. And this will be a cracking game.
- 7:55I'm just going to lean, even though the Dees are ahead of the Crows on the ladder,
- 8:00but I'm just going to have to lean towards the Crows at Adelaide Oval.
- 8:03Yeah, I'm going to back the Demons in, and you're right, Cozzy and the Dees,
- 8:08they've been a lot of fun to watch.
- 8:09Next game, GWS and Carlton.
- 8:12I don't know what to say here, Cam. Both sides have had equally impressive performances
- 8:17this year, but equally lousy performances, to say the least.
- 8:22The Giants surely get the job done at home, but you just don't know with the
- 8:28way they've fronted up throughout the season.
- 8:31Again, they've been hit with injuries, particularly to key players,
- 8:34which has cost them at certain periods of the year, particularly against opposition
- 8:38that they probably should have beaten at that stage of the game.
- 8:41But I think I'll have to lean towards the Giants here to get over the top of
- 8:45the Blues, who have turned their season around under Josh Fraser.
- 8:47I think they've won four on the trot. And, yeah, core old Michael Voss once again, Cam.
- 8:53Well, that's exactly right. I'm just flipping through the results now.
- 8:55Since Michael Voss departed as coach, they've had a bit of a run there.
- 9:00So that's probably enough for me to lean towards the Blues. They are playing
- 9:04in Sydney, but I will back the Blues. And the Magpies go up against the Power.
- 9:08This is another one I'm not sure about. Now, the Pau's form,
- 9:10as we know, they've played in a lot of close games this year.
- 9:13They can't quite get over the line, but their form's been good.
- 9:17And the Pau's have been a little bit inconsistent. They've had some injuries
- 9:20to key players also throughout the season, which makes a difference,
- 9:24particularly when your list isn't as strong as a lot of people might think.
- 9:28And Collingwood, obviously, sitting in 13th place for a reason.
- 9:31I don't think they'll make the top 10 this year, which a lot of Collingwood
- 9:35supporters will be quite disappointed about. Yeah.
- 9:39I'm going to tip the power to beat the Pies at the G on Saturday night.
- 9:43Yeah, so am I. I think if you can push the Swans and just go down by three points,
- 9:49that's probably an indicator that if they can reproduce that form,
- 9:52they should get the win there. And the Richmond Tigers up against North Melbourne.
- 9:57This is a big game for North Melbourne on 24 points.
- 10:00St Kilda in the 10 on 24. If they get a win here over Richmond,
- 10:04they could be pushing for that 10th spot.
- 10:07Yeah, and it's really open for them. There's an opportunity for them to take
- 10:10that 10th spot, but they just have to continue to win games.
- 10:14I think they won six this year. They won four last year, so they've improved again this season.
- 10:21The Tigers, they were good against Brisbane for two and a half quarters and
- 10:24just the young legs running out towards the end against the season, Brisbane side.
- 10:28But I think Richmond and obviously North being over in Perth,
- 10:32they got demolished by Freo.
- 10:35They just snuck over the line against West Coast. and the Tigers showed a bit
- 10:39against the Lions and I'm going to tip an upset here, Cam, and go for Tigers.
- 10:43Okay. All right. You're on the Tigers. I'm on the Roos and St.
- 10:47Kilda up against the Bulldogs. That's what? Sunday?
- 10:51Yeah, Sunday. Sunday at Marvel. Toss of the coin here.
- 10:56If the Saints produce the football that they can play and they've been impressive
- 11:00the last couple of weeks, they'll win.
- 11:02The Doggies have been a little bit inconsistent throughout the season.
- 11:04Obviously, getting belted by Adelaide last week was not ideal for them,
- 11:08but they beat Hawthorne the week before that. So can you get a read on this
- 11:12game? I'm not sure you can. I reckon you toss the coin and see how it lands.
- 11:15And it lands for me, for the Saints. Yeah, I'll go the Saints as well.
- 11:19Teams with the Byers, the Lions, the Bombers, the Swans and West Coast.
- 11:25Well, Jono, that's round 15. A couple of big games there. The Jockers up against
- 11:29the Cats and the Crows up against the Demons.
- 11:33Yeah, they should be crackers, Cam. I'll be tuning into those two most definitely.
- 11:37And go the Cats and go the Suns. And we'll speak next week and run through all the results.
- 11:44Fantastic. Good talking once again, Cam.
- 11:47It's game time.
